LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com There’s something extra special about celebrating Earth Hour along the Humber River, says Chris Holcroft, founder of the annual Ward 13 celebration. “It’s the sounds, the sights. It reinforces why you’re doing an event like Earth Hour,” Holcroft said during a conversation at Coffee Tree Roastery in Bloor West Village – not far from the river – on a recent Monday afternoon. Adds historian, activist and champion of the Humber River, Madeleine McDowell: “It’s live and in person, instead of on Facebook.” Earth Hour “is an opportunity for members of the community to reinforce the importance of action on climate change.” Environmental advocacy group Green 13, in collaboration with Heritage York, hosts its eighth annual Earth Hour Celebration on Saturday, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the historic Lambton House. Power down at home before joining neighbours for an evening that includes a candlelight walk (weather permitting) guided by McDowell, followed by live acoustic music, and refreshments. Participants are asked to bring their own candles, flashlights or lanterns and, if interested, a poem, song, or story to share. >>>walk, page 10

rin Malin moved from Parkdale into a house on Campbell Avenue in Davenport Village in 2010. She and her husband and two young children love the neighbourhood for its proximity to Campbell Park, public transit, and downtown. When she heard about provincial transit agency Metrolinx’s proposal to build an elevated two-track bridge through her community, Malin said she was heartbroken. “It makes me pretty sad,” she revealed on a sunny and warm Tuesday afternoon in March during a conversation at her doorstep. “We moved into the area because of Campbell Park.” Malin worries about the loss of greenery to the park; the number of trees that will be cut down. When asked if she is concerned about the prospect of declining property values in the area, she responded, “Yeah, sure.” Malin was one of several residents who spoke with The Villager about their concerns over a train bridge potentially appearing in their neighbourhood. Metrolinx is studying building the structure to eliminate the Davenport Diamond rail crossing and elevate GO Transit trains traveling along the Barrie line. While Malin is concerned about an 8.5-metre-high bridge affecting her property values, she says it is less of an issue than that of the overall health and prosperity of the community. “We love this neighbourhood. We love the people here,” Malin said. “It’s sad to hear there might be trains going by my back door every seven minutes. They’re trains what’s your If you feel strongly one way or another about our feature, tell us! Email contactus@insidetoronto.com or send your views to 175 Gordon Baker Rd., Toronto, ON, M2H 0A2.

Davenport neighbours say overpass will lower quality of life & property values

A BRIDGE TOO FAR?

that I will never use.” Already, she and her family must contend with the sound of ringing Union Pearson (UP) Express train bells about every 15 minutes. And, given the outcome of the four-stop corridor from Union station to the airport – its steep fares until recently and less than 10 per cent ridership – Malin admitted she has little faith in Metrolinx. She cited noise, the lack of electrification, the “quite a bit of extra” pollution, and the loss of trees as her main concerns. “I don’t think I can trust Metrolinx because of UP,” Malin said. Her neighbour, J. Campbell, called an elevated train bridge a “preposterous” idea. “To raise up a train to bedroom height – it will only broadcast the sound,” said Campbell, who has lived in the neighbourhood for 22 years. Plus, he said, he’s not pleased the train won’t be electric, at least to start. “Any civilized place I’ve been to, they are underground

and electrified,” he said, citing Europe as an example. Campbell said he has “no doubt” property values would decrease. However, when he moved into the neighbourhood more than two decades ago, it was a gamble. While it was an industrial area, factories had begun to close down. Regardless of whether or not Metrolinx gets its bridge, Campbell said he’ll likely be staying put. “We’re so happy with this place. We’ll probably bear it,” he said. “You can get used to trains going by.” And he hopes there won’t be any ringing bells.

S

e v e r a l ‘D a v e n p o r t Deserves Better’ signs had been erected at homes throughout the Dupont Street and Symington Avenuearea. The local advocacy group Options for Davenport, which opposes the elevated overpass through the middle of the residential neighbourhood, has launched its own community environmental assessment

to investigate the bridge and alternatives. It is in the midst of gathering responses to a survey (optionsfordavenport. ca) and canvassing door-todoor. As of last Thursday, 290 people had responded. Of those, 40 per cent said they would move out of the neighbourhood if the bridge was constructed, according to Options for Davenport’s Sam Barbieri. Although it is a concern for some respondents, Barbieri said the group’s focus is not on property values, but about “the bigger issue” of quality of life for those who stay. “People don’t want to be forced to leave,” he said. “We want to know that whatever is built will be with the health and well-being of the community in mind, and right now we’re not convinced this is the case. This is a massive piece of infrastructure – we’re talking a two- to three-storey overpass running mere meters from residential properties, eventually carrying 180 trains a day – and it’s not something

that should be rushed through without a thorough study of other alternatives.”

M

etrolinx community manager Manuel Pedrosa said the transit planning agency has already agreed to take another look at the overpass designs following calls from the community. The new design that is under study is a third smaller at 570 metres long, along the Barrie corridor from approximately Wallace Avenue to south of Davenport Road. This design also makes allowances for public art, greening, and the creation of a multi-use path traveling through Campbell Avenue Park. As for property values, Pedrosa said Metrolinx has consulted extensively on the matter and expects the bridge will not affect home prices. “Nothing that has come up in our review suggests there’s going to be any impact on property values,” said Pedrosa in January. “But I can’t predict the future.”

One real estate agent with deep roots in Davenport says he’s heard plenty of concern about the overpass. While several of his clients were worried enough to contact him directly following the announcement by Metrolinx earlier this year to study the train bridge option, “Condo” Chris Borokowski said most will likely stay put since Toronto’s skyrocketing housing market effectively prevents most from cashing in on their investment if they want to continue living in the city. “There would be a stampede to sell if there was somewhere to go,” said Borokowski, who, as his nickname suggests, specializes in condominium sales. While prices aren’t likely to drop given current market conditions, he said it’s possible there will be a “slowing of growth” in Davenport, which is still considered affordable compared to many other priced-out Toronto neighbourhoods. Even so, Davenport in general, he said, has seen housing prices rise to as much as $1 million compared to $200,000 for the same property only 10 years ago. “You probably won’t be able to quantify the numbers until construction of the bridge is done,” he said. “From an agent’s perspective, there’s concern among homeowners for sure.” At a recent meeting hosted by BIG (Bloor Improvement Group) that brought together community groups impacted by the proposed bridge, Davenport MPP Cristina Martins revealed many of her constituents have told her they would move if the bridge becomes a reality. It’s her mission to articulate to Metrolinx that the Davenpor t community deserves “the best damn project.” PHOTO: Campbell Avenue Park looking north toward Antler Street. Photo/EDUARDO LIMA

Toronto Board of Health proposal to open safe injection sites for drug users in three neighbourhoods is bound to make many residents uncomfortable, but it is the right thing to do. Put quite simply, these sites will save lives and make our entire city safer. That being said, if you live in Parkdale, south Riverdale or the Yonge/Dundas area you are rightly feeling some concern. Residents will be asking themselves if safety in the area will be compromised, if they are at risk of being flooded with heroin and fentanyl addicts looking to shoot up. The answer is: No. The call for the safe injection sites our view has been made in response to a growing number of deaths related Attend to overdoses during the past decade Toronto. meetings, in Those numbers are up 41 per cent learn more from a decade earlier, and in 2013 a shocking 206 people died after injecting drugs. In the face of these numbers, to do nothing would be both irresponsible and immoral on the part of the health department and our city’s leaders. “All lives are important, and nurse-supervised safe injection sites save lives,” said Angela Robertson, executive director of the Queen West-Central Toronto Community Health Centre in Parkdale, one of the proposed safe-injection sites. The South Riverdale CHC and a Toronto Public Health office known as The Works near Yonge and Dundas are also proposed safe injection sites. All three facilities already offer safe injection kits and have experience. They were identified as the best spots for the safe injection sites since they have the busiest needle exchanges in the city. Their staff say the existing services prevent the spread of hepatitis C and HIV among drug users. But more still needs to be done. Many addicts visiting these centres are homeless, and since they often use quickly and in public, most often alone, they are at high risk of a lethal overdose. Providing a safe place for them to do this lessens the chance of death or disease. The board of health will offer further recommendations on the safe injection sites this summer, once community meetings are held in the identified areas. We encourage you to take part in these meetings and learn the facts about this proposal.

No doubt about it, March Break has arrived The sure signs that it’s March Break: 1. You get the sudden urge for maple syrup. Not just so you can lather it on an enticing stack of pancakes you are intending to inhale either. Your primary focus is to go to one of those festivals out of the city to actually see how they make the yummy stuff. 2. You constantly daydream of heading off to High Park, Riverdale Farm or the Toronto Zoo. After which you immediately break into a rousing chorus of Talk to the Animals, secretly hoping the next person who walks by will ask you if you speak rhinoceros. So you can giggle, “Of courseros, can’t you?” 3. Without even realizing it, you find yourself Googling bed and breakfasts in Muskoka though you don’t even know what the heck they are. 4. Jorge Molina, the westend artist responsible for the renderings revealed himself on Facebook late Thursday after his wife saw one of Doucette’s Tweets saying the paintings made her smile. Mission accomplished for Molina. “I turned to my wife and said, ‘That’s exactly what I told you I wanted to happen, a simple smile on somebody’s face,’” he said. “For her to say that was pretty serendipitous.” It turns out, the paintings are just the beginning of an impressive undertaking Molina has in the works. He’s getting ready to launch the 416 Project, where he will hang 416 petite paintings across 35 different Toronto neighborhoods. “I kind of wanted it to remain a mystery until I had a few more up, because my project is still in the early phases,” he said. “The three that are up now were just to test the waters and see if people would take them down or what would happen to them. >>>from page 1 McDowell relies on a lantern that once belonged to her grandfather to guide the walk. The vintage 1902 lantern was used by her grandfather before there were street lamps to light the way, she said. “I talk about the river, about what we’re walking past, the farms that used to be in the area,” she said. In the walk’s inaugural year, as many as 500 people gathered in the No Frills parking lot in Bloor West Village, much to the surprise and delight of Holcroft and his wife. “I remember walking up Windermere Avenue from my house and walking towards

the No Frills parking lot. There was a sea of people,” Holcroft recalled. At the time, there wasn’t a platform for people to come out and discuss climate issues, Green 13’s Rita Bijons said. “Green 13 emerged from that first walk,” she said. Since then, the goal has been to keep the event fresh for participants. Walking along the Humber gets people out in nature, Bijons said. The Roncesvalles Business Improvement Area and Roncyworks volunteer members present an annual Earth Hour candlelight walk, while businesses along Roncesvalles create a powered-down ambi-

ance for the event’s supporters. The walk is expected to attract families, long-time supporters, and local politicians. Participants are asked to gather at 8:15 p.m. around the Dundas Roncesvalles Peace Garden, 2201 Dundas St. W. (in front of Starbucks). The walk will begin promptly at 8:30 p.m. and conclude at the Roncesvalles Footbridge in Beaty Boulevard Parkette. The walk marks the World Wide Fund for Nature’s 10th anniversary of Earth Hour, held in an effort to encourage the global community to share the opportunities and challenges of creating a sustainable planet.
