Local police officer named Pan Am Games torchbearer ‘It’s a huge honour’ says Zsofia Balazs
insidetoronto.com/diversity
CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com The Pan Am Torch was unveiled Monday at the Ontario Science Centre along with the names of the first torchbearers who will be carrying the flame across the country – including one from 11 Division. “It will be seen by millions. It will bring Canadians together,” said Saad Rafi, CEO of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games (TO2015).
OPINION Mulcair’s ideas for Toronto sound nice, but they’re just ideas. /4 SHOPPING
“These Games are going to be special.” About 3,000 torchbearers in total are expected to complete, on average, a 200-metre segment during the 41-day torch relay. Dignitaries in attendance included Toronto Mayor John Tory, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, and TO2015 Board Chair David Peterson, who each announced one of the first nine torchbearers at the event. Zsofia Balazs, 24, had the chance to hold the torch at the London Olympic Games where she competed for Canada as a competitive distance swimmer. >>>BALAZS, page 7

Diversity Our Strength Diversity Our Strength – it’s Toronto’s motto. It’s also the name of the newest Metroland Media Toronto online portal. Launched this week, www. insidetoronto.com/diversity is a growing compilation of news, events and resources dedicated to reaching Toronto’s diverse communities. The city is home to people who speak more than 140 languages, half of Toronto’s population was born outside of Canada and the city is a place where nearly half of residents’ first language is something other than English. “Toronto is one of the most multicultural cities in the world,” said Paul Futhey, project lead and editor with Metroland Media Toronto. “It’s important that we find new ways to present our content to our readers.”

MPP tables LGBTQ bill
Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo has introduced new legislation to protect youth from therapy aimed at preventing them from growing up to be LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual or queer). DiNovo said she was inspired to introduce the historic legislation after the suicide of Ohio trans teen Leelah Alcorn, whose suicide note said her parents sent her to therapists to try to ‘fix’ her.
torontocorsoitalia.com
“Alcorn’s final words were, ‘Fix society. Please.’ This bill is our effort to fix society and protect LGBTQ youth,” said DiNovo in a statement. The bill would prohibit conversion therapy from being an insured service covered by OHIP. The bill would also prohibit such efforts from being carried out to patients under 18 years of age. - Lisa Rainford

Mulcair’s support for city gives Tory leverage
I
t is a good thing that former Ontario Progressive Conservative party leader John Tory is taking the non-partisan part of his job so seriously. Otherwise, his meeting with federal NDP leader Thomas Mulcair would have been very awkward indeed. Mulcair came to Toronto early this week bearing gifts – or at least the promise of gifts. The leader of Canada’s official opposition told a crowd at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, effectively, that Toronto was his and his party’s favourite: that the city and the region were the most important in Canada, and that money and attention would flow here from a federal NDP government. To specifics: the NDP would create 164,000 new affordable daycare spots in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) over the next eight years; the minimum wage
david nickle the city would be set federally at $15 an hour; and the GTA would receive $90 million a year more in funding from an increased share of the gas tax. This is powerful stuff. Affordable daycare and a higher minimum wage would mitigate the income inequality that is degrading the city. The $90 million in gas tax money would go a long way to improving and just maintaining the sputtering Toronto Transit Commission system. Poverty and transportation have been widely identified as pressing issues for Torontonians, and Mayor John Tory has put both of those things at the top of his to-do list for the coming term of council. Tory and Mulcair met
Monday at Toronto City Hall, the day following Mulcair’s speech. The two faced TV cameras and reporters immediately afterward, comfortably side-by-side and clearly on the same page. Our mayor was generous in his praise for the policy, but careful. He noted that the gas tax promise was one that built on transit funding that had been initiated by the Liberals and enshrined by the Conservative government. It was more, and that was good. And it was hard not to like that notion that Toronto was the most important place in Canada – that being a song Tory’s been singing for some time. Still, Tory wouldn’t endorse – and he would likely be foolish to do so. Mulcair and the NDP are the Official Opposition in only the most tenuous sense; the party gained its
unprecedented influence under the irreplaceable leadership of the late Jack Layton. The promises Mulcair made are really more powerful as ideas right now than they are as likely outcomes. But for now, that is all right. Mulcair has put forward the best and most reasonable federal agenda for cities since another unlikely Prime Minister, Paul Martin, almost a decade ago. It is the agenda that others will be held against – and that they will have to at least address if they hope to gain foothold in this voterich region. And that gives Mayor Tory some leverage, in an arena where until recently it seemed as though he had very little. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Balazs hopes to qualify for swimming at Pan Am Games >>>from page 1 But this will be her first time running with the torch. “I feel great. It’s a huge honour,” said Balazs, who is also an 11 Division police officer. Echoing Rafi’s sentiments, she added the torch relay really brings the community together. “It just brings a smile on everyone’s face,” Balazs said. In addition to being a torchbearer, Balazs is also hoping to qualify to swim in the Pan Am Games in her hometown with the world watching the Games. “I think Toronto deserves the attention,” she said.

March to conclude at Lula Lounge with entertainment, food, prizes >>>from page 1 across the country participating in the March for Music. “Our goal is to get as many people registered,” said Chrissy Pearson, an accredited music therapist and the Music Therapy Centre’s clinical manager. Participants will gather at the centre, 1175 Bloor St. W., at 1 p.m. before heading out on the two-kilometre march down Dufferin Street to the Lula Lounge for a family-friendly celebratory event. Participants will be treated to hot chocolate and temporary tattoos before heading out. Like last year, the Maracatu Mara Aberto Band will lead the march.
“Their music is pretty awesome. They’re known on the local scene,” Pearson said. party for march participants The march will conclude at Lula Lounge where piano pop singersongwriter Darrelle London will perform. London recorded a song for the Music Therapy Centre, which she will be performing, Pearson said. There will be refreshments, including cupcakes, prizes for the most pledges raised, a silent auction and activities for kids. Up for grabs is a ukulele signed by Chris Hadfield and swag donated by the band The
Barenaked Ladies. The goal of this year’s March is to raise $50,000. Music therapy can helped reduce anxiety, improve communication skills, increase mobility and promote learning, among many other things. Accredited Music Therapists (MTAs) have a music therapy bachelor degree or higher, and use the power of music to promote, maintain, or achieve goals related to health, well-being, and quality of life.

St. Mary’s seeks walkathon support Students at St. Mar y’s Catholic Secondary School in the Dufferin and Bloor West streets-area are already gathering pledges for a walkathon they’ll be participating in this spring. The walkathon is the high school’s major fundraising event of the year. Proceeds from the event will go towards subsidizing many schoolrelated events and programs. The 10K walk (and run for
those who so choose) will commence at 10 a.m. on May 21 with each grade likely starting 15 minutes apart, according to school chaplain and math teacher Jenny Gazzaruso. “We hope to have the entire school take part, about 800 participants,” Gazzaruso said. Students will leave their 66 Dufferin Park Ave. school and head north on Gladstone Avenue to Bloor Street, west on
Bloor to High Park where they’ll do a loop around the park onto Parkside Avenue and back up to Bloor and back where they’ll convene in Dufferin Grove Park for a barbecue. Participants must collect a minimum of $15 in pledges to take part. The school is seeking support from the community. Contact St. Mary’s at 416393-5528. – Lisa Rainford

As part of the March Safe campaign, police are pledging to pay special attention not only to jaywalkers, but also vehicles making conditions unsafe for law-abiding pedestrians. According to a news release for the campaign, at least half of all fatal collisions involve pedestrians, of which there were 31 in 2014. “All officers will be paying particular attention to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians who commit traffic violations that may jeopardize pedestrian safety,” reads the release.
