Fashion designed with grit and glamour Local textile artist’s collection to be featured during Arts and Fashion Week LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Fashion designer and textile artist Alexandra De Francesco toils all year in preparation for the annual Fashion Art Toronto’s (FAT) Arts and Fashion Week, April 22 to 26. FAT celebrates inventive and contemporary expression through more than 50 runway shows, live performances, fashion films, photography exhibits and art installations. De Francesco relishes in taking her time to collect materials from recycled antiques, to lace and beading to create one-of-a-kind wearable art couture – work that has been described as “dark and daring” and “pin-up dominatrix chic.” “It takes a long time to collect and piece together what I have,” The Roncesvalles Village resident said. “Because it’s so old, it’s tough to work with, it disintegrates.” De Francesco initially applied to the Ontario College of Art and

Design (OCAD) intent on pursuing drawing and painting. What she graduated with was a Bachelor Degree in design. “I don’t know how that happened,” she said, laughing. De Francesco said she likes to work with salvaged materials that also include ancient silks and hand-dyed and silk-screened fab-

rics, recycled furs and hand-spun threads. “As a kid, I was always making things from everything around me, even in the garden out of leaves. I was always crafting,” she said. “My mom had fabric in the basement. She’d help me sew outfits for my dolls.” De Francesco honed her sewing

skills in high school in home-ec class. Her latest collection, ‘Grit/ Glamour,’ inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald and his writing of the Jazz Age, will make its debut Wednesday, April 23 at 585 Dundas St E. “I was inspired by the excess of the time period. I started to get dazzled by the light and sequins of the era,” she said. Her seventh showing at FAT, De Francesco is no stranger to the “craziness” of the event. It’s a blur of co-ordinating shoes, makeup, models and the like – all while holding down several other jobs at the same time.

“I’m always moving, it’s pretty intense,” De Francesco said. “It’s a hell of a lot of stress. Then, it’s over and I can relax.” De Francesco, whose company is called Asphyxia, has exhibited her work at the Textile Museum of Canada, The Gladstone Hotel and Gallery X. Bloor West and Dufferin streetsarea Starkers Corsetry, owned by designer Dianna DiNoble, who creates custom, made-to-order corsets, will present her work during a fashion show on Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22. DiNoble’s interest in corsets piqued in high school while studying a lot of art history, although, she showed artistic talent as a child when she began sewing and painting. She studied fashion design at Sheridan College before apprenticing with couturiers and learning the same techniques she uses to create her corsets. “It’s so versatile. It can be so many different styles,” said DiNoble, who will be showing her work for the seventh time at FAT. “I love how it can change people’s shape.” DiNoble’s 10-piece runway show this year features corsets that incorporate animal skin textures and nature-inspired themes. The annual show is DiNoble’s chance to flex her creative muscle.

Downton Abbey-themed costume exhibit at Spadina Museum ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com The dinner dress and three-piece suits from the television show Downton Abbey are more than just the fashions of the 1920s, they also tell the story of social transformation here in Toronto. Spadina Museum is hosting the Canadian premiere of the Dressing for Downton: Costumes from Downton Abbey exhibit running through to April 13, featuring 20 costumes worn by the characters from the critically acclaimed period drama. “The costumes trace the huge changes that happened in the world because of the impact of World War One,” said Karen Black, the manager of the city’s 10 historic site museums. “Toronto was very much a part of that changing world view.” The costumes from the first three seasons have been borrowed from Cosprop, Ltd., the London-based costume house that designs and

creates the clothing. On display in the upper rooms of the historic home, the costumes are identified by character and season, and labels feature photographs of cast members wearing the exhibited costumes. The tour takes visitors

through the museum’s family and servants’ spaces and links the characters and events from the TV show to real Toronto history. “The exhibit also includes dresses

and accessories from our own artifact collection that were worn in this city during that Downton Abbey period,” Black said. Black explained that Spadina

Museum focuses on the period in Toronto between the two world wars and through this exhibit they are trying to tie the story of Toronto into the larger global story. Three generations of Toronto’s Austin family lived in the home that is now the Spadina Museum from 1866 until the house became a museum in the 1980s. “The Austins were not as aristocratic as the Crawly family of Downton Abbey, but they did face many of the same challenges including a shell shocked son returning from the First World War, the changing role of women, the new technology: everything from radio to the automobile and the telephone,” Black said. Tickets, which are nearly sold out at $25/$35 per person, are available at spadinamuseum.streamintickets. com

n hour of darkness.

That’s what the annual Earth Hour event calls for, this year on Saturday, March 29 between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. Organized by the World Wildlife Fund, the event encourages residents and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol of support for the planet. It is a worldwide event, which, according to organizers, has participation from more than 7,000 cities and towns in 154 countries worldwide. But the concept isn’t front of mind for all Torontonians. In the city last year, according to Toronto Hydro, there was a seven our view per cent reduction in energy use. In 2009, the city experienced a 15 Communities per cent reduction in energy use. what’s happening? hosting events SoFor symbolism to have strength, there needs to be meafor Earth Hour surable momentum. There has to be growth. If there isn’t, the impact of the overall message – however powerful it may be – is blunted. One way of ensuring that momentum takes place is seeing new and interesting ways of integrating the event into community life. We’re encouraged, for example, that some pockets of the community build a neighbourhood gathering around Earth Hour. Last year, there was an outdoor concert in Roncesvalles Village. This year, in Etobicoke, there’s a concert at Islington United Church celebrating the 20th anniversary of the church’s organ. In North York, the Yonge-Sheppard neighbourhood will once again have its annual Earth Hour community walk. It’s a fine idea to consider joining a local Earth Hour event. So, too, is using our creativity to come up with our own localized Earth Hour events. Either way, you have people getting together, united in a common cause. Everyone can appreciate the environmental and cost benefits of saving energy. It’s great that Earth Hour can help bring that message to the forefront. Ideally, respect for the environment and energy conservation is a constant, front-of-mind proposition – not just for one hour in a year. For some, Earth Hour is a place to start. For others it’s one simple activity in an ever-mindful drive to preserve the environment.

Mayoral fringe candidate raises important question about taxes M ayoral races are a long haul in Toronto – and that leaves plenty of room for little epiphanies. On Monday, one of those showed up to file papers at city hall – Ari Goldkind, a 40-year-old criminal defence lawyer. He made some headlines saying that he has a nose for B.S. and referring to the current mayor as Sideshow Rob. If past experience is any indication, an ambitious but untested outsider like Goldkind will go exactly nowhere in this race. Goldkind is a fringe candidate. But it’s rude not to ask what ideas even a fringe candidate brings to the table, and so that’s what I did. He started out sounding a bit like David Soknacki and Olivia Chow, advocating a return to the LRT in Scarborough over the council-approved

david nickle the city

subway. And then he kind of sounded like Soknacki on the land transfer tax, but it turned out I’d misunderstood when I thought he said that exemptions to the tax should go to more lower-priced houses and purchasers of homes worth more than $1.1 million should pay more. What Goldkind actually wanted to see was the land transfer tax increased on million-dollar homes, and everybody else pay the same. That, along with higher property taxes, would pay for repairs and improvements of Toronto’s public housing. Goldkind may throw around words like B.S. pretty freely, but for him, and really only him, taxes

are not a dirty word. After we spoke, it struck me: higher taxes shouldn’t be a de facto taboo, as they’ve become. Because while Goldkind might not have a hope at winning the election, if he actually pulled it off, his program of tax-and-spend government would probably make life a lot better here and drive almost no one from their homes. Taxes are low in Toronto – lower than elsewhere – and yet services are slipping. Subways are crowded and buildings are crumbling and according to this year’s Ombudsman’s Annual Report, even basic customer service isn’t sustainable. As this year’s budget debate wrapped up, City Manager Joe Pennachetti laid it bare, that property taxes will practically have to rise more dramatically in coming years than they

have in the past, just to maintain status quo. Toronto is circling the drain. And yet, the collection of miserly landholders that make up Toronto will almost certainly shuffle out and cast their vote for one of five or so A-list mayoral candidates with well-known resumes and no stomach for pitching the larger-scale tax hikes the city needs to pull out of its spin. Now, I can’t say that anybody should go to vote for the unknown criminal defence lawyer who just joined the long list of fringe mayoral candidates. But maybe it’s time that we shook our heads, and stopped believing that we can have a great or even decent future, paying only a little more than we did in the past.

TTC working to make all subway stations fully accessible by 2025 >>>from page 1 to walk to and from Dundas subway station with my walker, which is very strenuous to push it on the icy and snow covered sidewalks,” Einikis said. She does use Wheel Trans for longer distances, but says the service is “not always reliable” and costly. When she saw no sign of construction of an elevator this year, Einikis decided to contact the TTC. In a letter to its CEO Andy Byford at the end of January, Einikis expressed her frustration. “Don’t see why we old seniors with mobility problems should be penalized,” she wrote. Thanking Einikis for her inquiry, Byford included a report considered by the TTC board in 2011 to expedite the installation of elevators at Keele station. “At that time, the implementation date for the elevators at Keele station was 2018 and the TTC board main-

tained that date,” he said. According to the October 2011 report, the TTC has been working since March 1990 to make all of its services and facilities accessible to people with disabilities. So far, 30 stations have been made accessible and through the Easier

Access Phase 111 project, the remaining stations will be accessible by 2025. In June 2011, the TTC voted to approve a motion to “review the feasibility of expediting the installation of elevator service at Keele station noting that 2018 is the current implementation date for this project.” The report outlined the fact that an Easier Access project at a station involves a threeyear design and construction process and so the earliest Keele station could be made accessible was 2015. Fo r s e v e ra l re a s o n s, including decline in ridership, the TTC decided to keep its original schedule to make Keele fully accessible by 2018. Between 2004 and 2010, ridership at Keele station had decreased while it has increased at many other stations.

Toronto Real Estate Board President Dianne Usher announced that Greater Toronto Area realtors reported 3,459 transactions through the TorontoMLS system during the first two weeks of March 2014. This result for the TREB market area as a whole was virtually unchanged in comparison to 3,464 transactions completed during the same period in 2013. “Despite the poor weather conditions experienced during the first half of March, an abundance of willing buyers were actively searching for a home to purchase,” she says. “However, many of these people continued to be affect-

ed by the enduring shortage of single-detached, semi-detached and townhouse listings, which means that in some cases they could not find a home on which to make an offer, or they were facing stiff competition from other buyers.” For all home types combined in the GTA, the average selling price was $560,948 - up by almost six per cent in comparison to the average price for the same time frame in 2013. The semi-detached market segment in the City of Toronto led the way in terms of price growth during the first 14 days of March, with a yearover-year increase of more than ten per cent.

"Semi-detached houses represent a more affordable ownership option for some households. Because of this, some semi-detached listings have attracted many interested buyers. This competition has served to exert strong upward pressure on the average selling price," says Jason Mercer, TREB’s Senior Manager of Market Analysis. “The average single-detached price was down slightly in the City of Toronto year over year because of a smaller share of luxury deals this year compared to last. Tight market conditions will continue to drive strong detached price growth in 2014,” adds Mercer. – TREB

If a new rating system tracking convenience of accessing public transit is to be believed, Toronto is number one in the country. Walk Score, an American company best known for rating municipalities and neighbourhoods based on their walkability, released its first-ever scores for transit access. It gives the city a score of 78, one higher than Montreal, which falls in the category of providing excellent transit service in a city of more than 500,000 people. transit service to serve Toronto wSki

A new “ski transit” service was announced in New York recently and will provide bus trips from Toronto and New York City to several ski resorts in the state. The I Ski NY Bus service kicks off next season, and will offer trips from Toronto to six ski mountains in western New York. Few details about how the service will operate in Toronto are known, but New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a press release the intention of the initiative is to promote ski attractions in the state to locals and outof-towners alike. For more information about the service visit www. iskiny.com Rahul Gupta is The Villager’s transit reporter. His column appears every Thursday. Find him on Twitter: @TOinTRANSIT

I love working for the Bloor West Villager newspaper. My husband and I have been delivering for two years and we enjoy doing it. The delivery income had helped me through my studies to become a hair stylist. I enjoy decorating my house and arranging bridal flowers in my spare time. My favorite hobbies are dancing and listening to music. It has been a pleasure working for the Bloor West Villager under Ed White’s supervision. Congratulations Anusuya!
