“This is a victory for our community and for the community legal clinic system,” said Davenport MPP Jonah Schein, who circulated the petition. WTCLS provides “important” legal assistance, housing help, public education and mental health support to a broad spectrum of low-income and marginalized individuals, said the local MPP. Had the WTCLS closed this month, its clients would have had to seek support through the Social Benefits Tribunal and Landlord and Tenant Tribunal, according to Kier Munn, co-chair of WTCLS board of directors. WTCLS is “grateful” for the community’s support, said Munn.

Health scare leads woman to Film tells three women’s stories of raw food diet, new business fleeing abuse, starting over again Earth and City binds health, education and cooking LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com In late 2009, early 2010, Lansdowne and St. Clair avenues-area resident Lisa Sweetman became extremely ill. Sweetman saw as many as 20 different doctors over a year-long period and had yet to be diagnosed. Lying in a hospital bed, she thought, ‘Nothing is in my control, I have to do something’ and decided then and there to adopt a raw food vegan diet the very next day. “I felt like I had no choice. I thought I was going to die,” said Sweetman, who was determined to become “an active agent” in her health. “My diet left a lot to be desired.” She had already laid the ground work so-to-speak having dabbled in vegetarianism in the past. Nu t r i t i o n i s t Ca ro l y n Dupont’s book ‘Enlightened Eating,’ half cookbook, half recipe book, set her on the path to raw veganism. In December of 2010, doctors discovered a tumor in Sweetman’s pituitary gland and promptly removed it. The descent into sickness and fight to regain her health was the catalyst for the next phase of the early childhood educator’s life. Her eight-month diet of raw food led her to the restaurant ‘Rawlicious’ where she met Cassandra Rizzotto, a Junction resident, whose painting she bought, having seen it displayed at the eatery. Later, they would re-connect at a farmers’ market. Combining their love of food, the two have become “passionate” food activists, raw food creators and critical

The duo is part of several farmers’ markets, including Wychwood Barns, Sorauren Park, Dufferin Grove and Leslieville markets. “A lot of it was hard work, intuition, making pretty straight-forward decisions, taking risks, but very calculated risks,” said Rizzotto of their new career direction. “I’m the more rash one, Lisa’s the thoughtful one. We really want to hone in on our markets. They’re a great way to support local businesses and farmers.” In part because their background is in education, the two envision offering work-

The documentary was inspired by the shelter’s ‘Women on the Move’ program and features women working on creating a life free from violence, according to Redwood’s executive director Anne-Marie Gardner. “They were eager to use their voices to support other women and raise awareness,” she said. “The documentary highlights the journey
of three of these women as they break free from abuse, change their lives and inspire other women to reclaim their voices.” The filming was completed over a couple of years. “When we say it’s a journey, we use that word very purposefully,” said Gardner. “Our goal was to document the journey so it would be another way to communicate with others in the community.” The film combines interview footage of the women sharing their experiences with snippets from ‘Women on the Move’ workshops. Program participants build confidence and develop practical skills while helping other women and girls in the community. When filming began, the three women had been out of the shelter for six months to a year, said Gardner. “I discovered skills that I didn’t know I had,” said Consuelo O’Reilly, one of the film’s stars. “I found strength in myself, which made me

Political will needed for transit funding
Write us
I
t’s hard to argue with Toronto Region Board of Trade President (TRBOT), Carol Wilding, who said the time for debating how to pay for transit expansion is over. We are decades into a problem that should have been discussed generations ago. However, providing funding recommendations like those in the TRBOT’s discussion paper, A Green Light To Moving The Toronto Region, doesn’t make funding a reality. Compiled in the paper, released Monday, revenue tools recommended by the TRBOT include a one per cent regional sales tax to generate up to $1.6 billion a year; a $1 per parking space levy also raising $1.6 billion annually; a 10 cent per litre regional fuel tax bringing in as much as $840 million; and a road toll for high-occupancy lanes charged at 30 cents per kilometre for single drivers who wish to use the lanes, which would generate a maximum of $45 million annually. All revenue raised is to be earmarked for transit expansion. Great. And if managed properly – and transparently – the nearly $5 billion annually for transit building would more than double the $2 billion Metrolinx says is needed each year for the $50 billion Big Move plan. The numbers are impressive. These are all worthy recommendations – but it all comes down to the increased taxation of people and the willingness of levels of government to impose such taxes. We’re a far cry from any government having that courage and despite the board’s assurances, from understanding what the public would accept. The Board of Trade discounted using devices such as property tax or income tax hikes to fund transportation, citing them as revenue sources for municipal governments – and always under consideration to increase to keep municipalities afloat. Whether in the form of a straight-out tax, a levy, or toll the end result is the same - money comes from the pockets of residents. We have said many times that we will get the kind of transit we pay for. Very true. “There will be consultation and negotiation by the province, municipalities and other stakeholders, and they will ultimately decide the final recommendation,” Wilding said. “We need $2 billion for the Big Move, and we’ve put tools forward that will get us at least that far.” The ambitious recommendations are what is needed. After all the region is losing $6 billion dollars in productivity annually. While the TBOT suggests upward of 50 per cent of people would be willing to swallow taxes to fund transportation (to which TBOT says 88 per cent in another study says is in crisis) it’s never that easy to evaluate acceptance. We do know this. You can’t tweak today’s revenue generation and come up with an answer that would raise the required capital to build the system and to maintain the operation. This paper offers dramatic new income sources to be considered. But is there a political will to carry any of these recommendations forward?

Board of Trade’s transit funding plans a good start toward building city’s future
T
he Toronto Region Board of Trade has been a big player in policy development at Toronto City Hall since amalgamation. Which is not to say that it’s always been a welcome player. In the early years of amalgamation under Mayor Mel Lastman, it proved a powerful ally in obtaining help from the federal and provincial government; during the Miller years, it attempted to provide budget advice that council – or at least the mayor – had little interest in hearing. It’s weighed in on social issues, infrastructure and tax policy at the same time as it’s engaged in its more core business of... well, business growth and retention. This week, the board
david nickle the city stepped into the fray once more: this time, with a suite of taxes, fees and levies to come up with about $3.5 billion a year, going towards public transit. This is not a huge leap for the board. For years they’ve been advocating massive public funding of transportation infrastructure expansion in Toronto. On the other hand, it is newsworthy, when a business organization is the first out of the gate in proposing what under other circumstances its more conservative members might decry as a massive tax grab. In this case, the conservatives who seem
most uneasy about these proposals are the ones on Toronto Council. ford against new tax Mayor Rob Ford has made it clear that he doesn’t support any tax increases for transit. Doug Holyday, the deputy mayor, doesn’t like them much either. Even Karen Stintz, the chair of the Toronto Transit Commission and generally a more progressive conservative on council, worries about the $1-a-space parking levy the board’s suggesting. That reaction shouldn’t be the rule for the board’s proposals: specifically, a one per cent regional sales tax, a 10 cent per litre regional fuel tax, a road toll for HOV lanes and the aforementioned parking
levy. The proposal is a good start toward coming up with the $50-billion cost of the regional Let’s Move plan. One might add to that a portion of income tax – so that the entire cost isn’t borne through user fees and consumption taxes – but the Board of Trade does provide the basis for a payment plan for the cost of building our infrastructure to match our city’s needs and aspirations. The alternative is the continued reliance on the current mayor’s fantasy of private sector funding that will never materialize. In other words, stagnation.

Subways the only solution to Toronto’s transit woes To the editor: Re: ‘Time to think of alternatives to improve commute,’ Editorial, Feb. 28. In the real world, Toronto is about 30 to 40 years behind the times for implementing new transportation needs. Your solutions are a dream that will never happen. No matter what the TTC may dream up or suggest, changes to people’s daily routines are more or less fixed to their job requirements. This great city of ours needs to quadruple the amount of subways to encompass the greater area of Toronto, for example, two or three more east-west lines and the same for north-south directions. This is the only sane way to go. Let’s totally reject the former TTC chair Adam Giambrone ideas as he is out in left field. W.D. Adamson
GO Quiet Zones the way to go, says reader To the editor: I agree strongly with designating the upper coach of most GO trains as special Quiet Zones. As of Feb. 11, the transit service started to designate the upper coach on most GO trains as Quiet Zones. Passengers will be discouraged from speaking loudly while on the
train and be asked to turn sound off on all electronics. Employees on GO Transit will not be the ones to ask for silence, rather the passengers on GO Transit will do so in a polite manner. Designating the upper coach on GO trains as Quiet Zones makes the commute more peace-
ful for those traveling on the trains. Travelling far distances can be quite irritating with many people talking around you. Having the Quiet Zones on Go trains will help reduce the amount of traffic on the street because it will encourage more people to take the trains.
Close one east-west road as way to ease gridlock, readers suggests To the editor: A relief subway line has been proposed from Pape to Union station to take some of the pressure off the existing lines into the downtown core. It’s a great idea, but costly and would take several years to implement. Although not a transportation genius, and I haven’t looked at every aspect of what I’m proposing, I have a much simpler plan. It would cost next-to-nothing and
could be implemented almost immediately. The idea would be to close one major east-west traffic artery to vehicular traffic (either permanently or during rush-hour only). TTC, taxi, and emergency/ service vehicles only would be permitted on this route. Queen Street would probably be the best choice. Eastern Avenue doesn’t run far enough. The same for Dundas, and it
has no TTC now in the east end. Gerrard/Carleton is a possibility. Danforth/Bloor already has the subway. The more efficient the route chosen, the more likely urban drivers will become commuters. Of course, all the implications of such a plan must be considered, but the idea is now out there for discussion. It might be worth a try for six months or a year? G. Nina
Also, by taking the GO train, it will benefit the environment because there will be fewer emissions in the air because less cars will be on the roads. GO Train Quiet Zones can be highly effective to those passengers looking to avoid a noisy commute. Daniella Einhorn

Residents have donated more than $100,000 towards saving the zoo >>>from page 1 the Honey Family Foundation has pledged to match dollar for dollar to a maximum of $50,000. “We have raised approximately $50,000 towards the match so far,” said Doucette. Since February of last year, residents have donated more than $100,000 towards saving the zoo. Meanwhile, Friends of High Park Zoo, the advocacy group formed in response to keeping the tourist attraction open, raised more than $139,000. Residents will be able to double their donation until June 15. To operate in 2013, the zoo needs $228,000, which is funded only by public donations. Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System
What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last three years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis.

Actor earns major role playing Buddy Holly in Ossington Theatre show LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The Ossington Theatre’s upcoming production of ‘Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story’ doesn’t investigate the real aspects of the legendary singer, but instead celebrates his myth. Those are the words of wisdom the musical’s director told its star, Eric Bleydendaal, who is performing in his first major role. “I can’t tell you how amazingly blessed I feel,” said Bleydendaal, who moved to the Dufferin Street and Wallace Avenue-area in December. A friend of his sent Bleydendaal the audition notice, saying, ‘I think you’d be perfect for the part.’ “I can’t imagine getting a bigger break,” Bleydendaal told The Villager. “It’s really an amazing thing to have all your skills come together in role.” When the show opens on March 28, Bleydendaal will have turned 23 years old – a year older than Holly was when he died in a plane crash that also killed Ritchie Valens, J.P. ‘The Big Bopper’ Richardardson and pilot Roger Peterson on Feb. 3, 1959. “Once the show opens, I’ll be older than he ever was,” said Bleydendaal. “I wasn’t

alive when Buddy Holly was, but I relate to that period of music. I listen to a lot of Chuck Berry, Little Richard, The Rolling Stones – musicians Buddy Holly influenced.” Director Charles Roy says Bleydendaal embodies the essence that was Holly. “He has just the right blend of determination and absolute joy for the arts,” said Roy of the “terrific singer and guitar player.” Roy says he loves that ‘Buddy’ is a story about the early phases of rock ‘n roll, that it’s about America in
the 1950s. “It’s a play with a couple of concerts in it,” he said. Holly is an important character in the development of popular music, said Bleydendaal, who played piano when he was seven and attended an arts high school where he performed in musicals and learned to play the guitar. Even though Holly’s career lasted only three to four years, “he lived an entire lifetime,” said Roy. “It was almost like he knew he was working against a ticking clock,” he said. Neither director nor star knew a lot about Holly initially. Bleydendaal didn’t invest in his music until he won the role in October. As for Roy, he spent a lot of time researching all things Holly, watching documentary footage. Bleydendaaal cites Holly’s ‘Not Fade Away,’ ‘Everyday’ and ‘Peggy Sue’ as his favourites. He’s been rehearsing with the cast and musicians for the past two weeks. “The musicians are the best,” he said. ‘The Buddy Holly Story’ plays for a four-week engagement from March 28 until April 21 at the Randolph Theatre, 736 Bathurst St.

School trustee Irene Atkinson in w stable condition after house fire LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Parkdale-High Park Trustee Irene Atkinson’s condition has been updated from critical to stable. “Prayers answered,” friend and colleague Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo announced via twitter around 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 18. Atkinson is at St. Joseph’s Health Centre after a fire broke out in her High Park area home Saturday evening, March 16. The veteran trustee and tireless advocate for children had been put on life support while family and friends rallied. Her daughters were at her bedside in the ICU, according to ParkdaleHigh Park MPP Cheri DiNovo, who had just returned from a visit to St. Joe’s early Monday morning. “I think everyone’s in shock,” said DiNovo. “Just over a week ago, we were
at a meeting with her. It’s a tragedy. This is such a vibrant, active woman.” DiNovo has known Atkinson for at least two decades. Atkinson was instrumental in seeing DiNovo elected to provincial parliament and has campaigned tirelessly for the MPP. “She’s in an induced coma,” reported DiNovo, adding “prayers are in order.” Local Councillor Sarah Doucette said she is feeling “shattered” since hearing the news first thing Sunday. “My thoughts are with Irene,” said Doucette, who has collaborated with the trustee first as a parent and now as a city politician. “If anyone can pull through, it’s her. She’s a very strong, determined person.” Firefighters were called to her house on High Park Boulevard between Indian Road and Parkside Drive just after 7 p.m., according to District Chief Stephen
Powell. The two-alarm blaze originated in the kitchen on the first floor, he said. One person was trapped on a third-floor balcony due to heavy smoke and although somewhat traumatized, was in no risk. Atkinson, who was on the first floor, was rushed to St. Joe’s and remains on life support. “The fire was very quickly extinguished,” said Powell. The fire marshal is investigating. $500,000 damage The fire was said to have caused $500,000 in damage. Over the past eight years, Atkinson has been working on alleviating the overcrowding at schools in Ward 7. She was recently successful in securing funding for additions at Keele and Swansea public schools.

poll finds new bus shelters preferred
Some 84 per cent of Torontonians who took part in a poll say they prefer the new TTC bus shelters to their boxy predecessors. That’s according to Astral Media, which redesigned and maintains the shelters as part of its 20-year street furniture contract with the city. The poll of 539 people wrapped up earlier this year, and the Montreal media company said those surveyed overwhelmingly prefered the updated designs, which include new park benches and garbage receptacles.

more charges laid in attack A Toronto man faces more charges in connection with a violent incident at a transit station. On Feb 1, Cassim Cummings allegedly grabbed a man by the neck at Finch station and choked him before uttering threats. Cummings is also accused of an assault at North York Centre station Feb. 12. The new charges were announced when the 20-yearold appeared in court March 12 for a bail hearing stemming from his arrest in late February for allegedly stabbing a man in the neck on a train near Davisville station.

Boulevard Club rebuild puts waterfront access on the table ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Parkdale’s exclusive recreation and social club is looking to expand, and some hope construction could lead one step closer to continuous waterfront access. Sitting on the edge of Lake Ontario, The Boulevard Club, which grew out of the Parkdale Canoe Club, has been in operation since the 1930s. The property it sits on is leased from the city and The Boulevard Club has exclusive use of that portion of the waterfront. As it stands, The Boulevard Club legally doesn’t conform with the city’s official plan or Western Waterfront Master Plan (WWMP), which both say the public is entitled to continuous access along the waterfront. But the club wants to rebuild the west wing of its building and needs a variance from the Committee of Adjustment to do so. Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks said a rebuild would require the club to come into com-
pliance with the WWMP. Cu r re n t l y, t h e Su n n y s i d e Boardwalk leaves the water’s edge just before Palais Royale to the west of the Boulevard Club. It veers north to meet the Martin Goodman Trail and doesn’t reappear until after the Argonaut Rowing Club to the east. Between these two points, a number of private facilities, the largest being The Boulevard Club, have private waterfront access. The long-term intent of the WWMP is to continue the boardwalk along the water’s edge, including in front of the various facilities that today enjoy unrestricted private access to the water. If the club chooses not to expand the footprint of the building, they would not be forced to come into compliance, but if they want to make changes, Perks said he believes the club should come into compliance with city policy. Mike Babin, president of the Boulevard Club, explained a rebuild of the west wing is unnecessary. The Boulevard Club was built in three sections and the western
edge of the club is the oldest part of the building, constructed nearly 90 years ago. “When it was built it was built on top of a concrete slab and that slab has been deteriorating for some years now, to the point that we have been advised by consulting engineers that it is time to replace the slab,” Babin explained. Rather than simply replace the slab, Babin said the club decided to tear down the old building and replace it with something new. The proposed rebuild will extend to the north and be about 10,000 square feet larger than the existing structure. It would include larger locker rooms, a family change room and a multi-purpose room that would enable the club to program things such as volleyball and indoor soccer for kids and indoor lawn bowling for seniors. In terms of making allowance to relocate the boardwalk to the south side of the club, Babin said at this stage of the game, it would be difficult for the club to undertake.
“If you take a look at the layout of the club, the clearance between the outdoor swimming pool, the outdoor patio and the break wall, it is very narrow. “There just isn’t the room to put that kind of a public thoroughfare through,” Babin said. “Today, we don’t see the possibility of providing that public access.” However, the project to rebuild does not in any way preclude that from happening in the future, Babin said. “We are not building to the south towards the lake,” Babin said. Understanding it is difficult at the moment to provide continuous waterfront access, Babin said the club is open to doing other things to provide a benefit to the community, such as possible improvements to Dowling Beach to the east or improvements to the Martin Goodman Trail. “We recognize that The Boulevard Club occupies a very nice piece of real estate and in return we try our best to give back to the commu-
nity,” Babin said, highlighting the club’s fundraising efforts to benefit the Parkdale Activity Recreation Centre among other charities as evidence. But area activists maintain there needs to be some progress toward putting the measures in place to enable uninterrupted waterfront access. “I think people generally accept that the club has a history there and will probably continue to be allowed to exist there, but it needs to compromise with its lease holder,” said Dirk Townsend of the ParkdaleHigh Park Waterfront Group. Andrew Emery, president of the Parkdale Residents Association (PRA), said The Boulevard Club operates on leased public parkland in the heart of the western waterfront so there is considerable public interest in how it develops and how their plans mesh with the WWMP.
i
The PRA plans to hold a meeting in April on the topic of the western waterfront and the Boulevard Club’s plans. Information about the meeting will be posted on www.parkdale.to

What started with a walk through the vibrant Bloor West Village 26 years ago became a family business rooted in the tree lined streets. In 1986, owners of McLellan Jewellers, Paula McInerney and her mother and father fell in love with the neighbourhood before opening their shop at 2344 Bloor St.W. “It was the ambience,” says Paula. “I’d never been to Bloor Westbeforeandwewalkedalong the beautiful trees and under the lights and fell in love. There happened to be a store available and we bought it.” At first, McLellan Jewellers sold fine jewellery but over the years the display cases started to fill with affordable pieces and

became a neighbourhood hot spot for quality costume jewellery. Paula and her parents hand selected each piece that was displayed in store, bringing together three distinct styles known throughout the neighbourhood. After 26 years serving the community, the doors at McLellan Jewellers recently closed. The shop now houses the Bloor West Apple Specialist. The closing is bittersweet for Paula. As a proud community member and promoter of local businesses she decided to hang up her necklaces to focus more time on her roll as chair of the Bloor West Village BIA. Today with her Cockerspanieli, Teddy, who enjoyed many
treats from customers during his time spent at the store, Paula still strolls by the shop to pay tribute to her mother who worked along side her for many years. “She had a passion for jewellery. Before she died she was always in the store working and greeting neighbours,” says Paula. “I decided to donate a bench in her honour which sits right in front of the store.” Paula recently decided to rejoin the retail business, part time. You can find her on Saturdays, not far from her mother’s bench, at Tzatz women’s clothing shop. “I wasn’t able to stay away for long. I’m working part time in the village because I missed it,” she says.“I missed the people.”

Adult clubs tackled by committee The Licensing and Standards Committee is looking at amendments to the Toronto Municipal Code when it comes to adult entertainment club regulations. Across the hall, the Public Wo r k s a n d E m e r g e n c y Services has a full agenda. It’s looking at the city’s longterm waste management strategy, and why the city can’t quite reach its 70 per cent diversion strategy, how to manage construction disruption, the city’s response to the Feb. 8 snowfall and the city’s single file riding bylaw.
w
Lobbying bylaw could be tightened Mayor Rob Ford’s Executive Committee comes back from March Break Wednesday to deal with the question of whether Toronto’s lobbying bylaw is tough enough. The Lobbyist Registrar is recommending lobbying be permitted during business hours only. Holders of public offices should only communicate with lobbyists Monday to Friday, from 8

w
councillors’ Term limits on agenda The committee will be looking at other limits on politicians, too. The notice of motion from councillors Mary Margaret McMahon and Jaye Robinson that came to council last month to explore term limits for councillors is on the Executive Committee agenda. The two councillors argued at the time that establishing a term limit of three terms for a councillor would encourage more turnover, and therefore fresher ideas and less political deadlock on council.
w
Land Transfer Tax cap defended Works Committee chair Denzil Minnan-Wong and Scarborough Southwest Councillor Michelle
Berardinetti will be defending their notice of motion to put a cap on the Municipal Land Transfer Tax. This plan is different from Mayor Rob Ford’s plan to phase out the tax. Under the Minnan-Wong/Berardinetti proposal, the tax would continue, but if revenues went above a set limit – due to a red-hot real estate market or other factors – the city would not collect the additional amount.
w
Council to hold mini-meeting Toronto, Toronto council meets for a special minimeeting just to deal with the February community council items: zoning approvals, historical designations, liquor licenses for public events. Embedded in those items is also a resolution to the debate over whether the high-end grocery store on Bay Street, Pusateri’s, ought to be able to maintain a lay-by south of Yorkville Avenue, for their valet parking service.

Board of Trade offers suggestions for funding The Big Move plan RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com It’s time to stop debating and get moving on paying for transit expansion, said the president of the Toronto Region Board of Trade (TRBOT) at a press conference Monday. Before an audience at the board’s downtown headquarters, including representatives from Metrolinx, Carol Wilding announced recommendations for the preferred revenue tools it claims will generate nearly $5 billion annually for transit building – more than double the $2 billion Metrolinx says is needed to pay for the bulk of its $50-billion Big Move plan “The debate is no longer if we need new revenue tools, but which ones,” Wilding said. “To succeed, all of us will have to contribute. All levels of government, the public and the private sector.” Compiled in a report released Monday, those
For over 80 years, parents have trusted our camp to provide their girls with the best camp experience available. Memories made around a camp fire, challenges met on a canoe trip and friendships forged in a shared cabin; these are the experiences that stay with a girl for life
tools include a one per cent regional sales tax to generate up to $1.6 billion a year; a $1 per parking space levy also raising $1.6 billion annually; a 10 cent per litre regional fuel tax bringing in as much as $840 million; and a road toll for high-occupancy lanes charged at 30 cents per kilometre for single drivers who wish to use the lanes, which would generate a maximum of $45 million annually. All the recommendations are dedicated for transit. The report, titled A Green Light to Moving the Toronto Region: Paying for Public Transportation Expansion, was prepared by a special cabinet of 40 stakeholders and took three years to prepare. Government, business leaders, economics academics and public polling all contributed to its findings. The authors also looked at successful transit funding examples from across the
world and whittled down an initial list of revenue tools from 26 to four, Wilding said. She said the recommendations were chosen because they are fair, balanced and economically responsible. She warned annual congestion costs to the regional economy will balloon from $6 billion to $15 billion by 2031 due to population growth if the Big Move is not completed. Following the announcement, Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig praised TRBOT’s recommendations, but remained coy as to whether the provincial transportation planning will incorporate them in its forthcoming funding investment strategy for the Big Move to be delivered to the sitting premier in June. The Toronto Region Board of Trade will launch a multimedia publicity campaign called Let’s Break the Gridlock to promote its recommendations: http://letsbreakthegridlock.com/
