Join a Jane’s Walk to learn about your neighbourhood Jane’s Walks take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday Currently, there are more than 10 Jane’s Walks taking place in wards 13, 14 and 18 this weekend. Jane’s Walk is described as a “walking conversation” led by volunteers that encourages people to discuss what’s important to them while

learning more about their city and neighbourhoods. Jane’s Walk was inspired by Jane Jacobs, a concerned citizen who spent plenty of time observing city life around her and in turn came up with theories about what makes a city a great place to live. Following her death in 2006, her friends and colleagues developed the walks to honour her legacy. The following is a list of walks planned in the Bloor West, Swansea,

Conjuring up some spirited hijinx on stage The Village Players present comedy Blithe Spirit until Thursday, May 15 MARIA TZAVARAS maria_tzavaras@yahoo.com There is one rule in the occult: never dabble in it especially if your intentions are dishonest. In The Village Players latest show, Blithe Spirit, a comedy by Noel Coward, the consequence of doing so is revealed in a show that will make you laugh and think about what you’d do if you had a chance to reunite with someone on the other side. When Ruth and Charles Condomine (Diane Franz, Liam Doherty) invite their friends Dr. George and Mrs. Bradman (Steve Ness, Heli Kivilaht), for a séance to at their home, it conjures up some unexpected results. Charles, a novelist, has actually set up the séance to research how mediums behave for his next novel, and has no belief in it whatsoever. Enter medium Madame Arcarti

(Anne Harper), who, from her wild clothes to her mannerisms, is as eccentric as she is serious about her work. She does the séance complete with music, lighting, a shaky table and herself in a hilarious trance that ends with her unconscious. Seemingly, nothing happens, but something did happen – the spirit of Charles’ first wife, Elvira (Anna Adamska), has returned from the dead, and the best part? Only Charles can see and hear her. This makes for some funny scenes between Charles and Ruth, who thinks some of the words exchanged by Charles and Elvira are meant for her. Once Elvira proves her presence and that Charles isn’t crazy, they now have to deal with the consequences. They’re stuck with the ghost of Elvira, who has no intention of leaving, much to the dismay of Ruth who can’t stand the situation and doesn’t trust the intentions of their

new house guest. If the situation isn’t bad enough, Madame Arcarti has no way of sending Elvira back, and the ghost, still very much in love with Charles, has some secret plans of her own that further changes everything. This show is uniquely entertain-

ing and one that keeps you guessing. What is Elvira up to, will she succeed and how will they ever get rid of her? The dialogue is smart and engaging, and a lot of arguing between the man and his two wives. Harper gives a believable and hilarious portrayal of the char-

acter Madame Arcarti with her over-the-top scenes which is a real crowd-pleaser. Ness and Kivilaht are fantastic as the curious onlookers, Dr, and Mrs. Bradman, and offer some fantastic one-liners. Franz as Ruth, Adamska as the sultry Elvira and Doherty as Charles portraying the love triangle from hell, not only makes for some entertaining scenes, but they are talented performers both individually and as a trio. Their unique situation also makes for some good comedy. Since the show is set in the 1940s, the costumes are pure eye candy. The men wear proper suits and the women wear beautiful period dresses. The set is rigged to create the special effects in this show, helping to create a fun, ghostly atmosphere. The show is long, and with two intermissions it runs almost three hours. But it’s a unique story with some twists that will keep you guessing (and laughing) until the end. Blithe Spirit runs until May 17, 8 p.m., The Village Playhouse, 2190 E. Bloor St. W. Regular tickets are $20. For tickets, please call 416-767-7702 or visit village-players.net

City seeks input on improving weather emergency response

emembering last year’s floods and ice storm may not be on the top of Torontonians’ list of fun activities this month, but the city wants to hear from you about what it should be doing to help residents in future weather emergencies. The ice storm of late December and the flooding after a massive rain storm in July, saw our city hit with two unprecedented weather incidents which knocked out power, caused environmental damage, and millions of dollars in property damage. The massive thunderstorm of July 8 hit Toronto hard and fast. Rain hammered down in a line across much of the west and central parts of the city, causing power stations to flood and shut down, the subway line to close, roads to turn into small rivers, and basements to flood. In the Don Valley, stranded GO train passengers had to be our view rescued by boats as water seeped into the train cars. The ice storm wreaked similar Speak up at havoc; knocking out power for days (in some cases weeks) as meetings or tree branches toppled under the via website weight of the ice and brought down power lines across Toronto. Hydro crews from across the province worked for days straight to restore power, and the city estimated some 20 per cent of Toronto’s tree canopy was destroyed. In some parts of the city, the damage was estimated as high as 50 per cent of tree canopy lost. They were both huge incidents impacting hundreds of thousands of people and highlighting the need for all residents to take some basic emergency preparedness steps including stocking of food, candles and cash in case of similar incidents. It also showed how important it is for residents to keep an eye out for neighbours in need and offer help. This month, residents can weigh in on how the city did in responding to these weather emergencies and what it might do better in the future. Meetings are set for May 12 at the Scarborough Civic Centre; May 13 at Toronto City Hall; May 14 at the North York Civic Centre; and May 15 at the Etobicoke Civic Centre. All meetings go from 6 to 9 p.m. Residents who can’t attend the meetings can share their input by going to the city’s website at www. toronto.ca/weatherprooftoronto A report on how the city dealt with the storms will go to the city’s executive committee on July 2.

Taxes and services should be defining issues of mayor’s race O ne thing that everyone seems to agree on in this mayoral election: transportation, and public transit, is a defining issue. Well, let me be the heretic in the room for a moment, and suggest that may not in fact be the case. I come by my heresy honestly, after having heard two candidates – front-runner Olivia Chow and trailing hopeful Karen Stintz – articulate as clearly as anyone yet has, how they’ll pay for the multi-billion dollar downtown relief subway line. Now, the downtown relief line has come up more than a couple of times in mayoral debates and announcements. No one is opposed to it (although Rob Ford puts it at the bottom of his list of priorities). Also, nobody quite knows how to pay for it.

david nickle the city

Stintz got things rolling early on the morning of April 29, outlining a 15-year plan to raise $1.6 billion. She’d do that for the most part by diverting revenue from parking tickets and parking lots into a special transportation fund, and also charging an extra $3 levy on certain downtown Green P parking garages. In the afternoon, Chow had a simpler plan. She’d cancel the Scarborough subway and the tax levy council approved to fund it, and having secured financing from the federal and provincial government, institute a new tax levy to pay for TTC repairs and upgrades, and the downtown relief line – or rather, to pay for the $1 billion the city

would borrow to fund the city’s share of those things. Both plans are forward looking, and could probably work. One raises some taxes more than some would like, one cuts some services and sells off assets more than some would like. Neither can really deliver the transit that Toronto needs on their own. Chow made that point most forcefully when she spoke to the Toronto Region Board of Trade. She pointed out that Toronto receives just eight cents of the dollar its residents pay in taxes federally and provincially. And she points out that it’s not sustainable to expect Toronto residents to fund all or even most of the needs of an urban centre by itself. Since amalgamation, Torontonians have been trained to flinch from tax increases or new taxes, to the point of self-destruction,

even as we’ve grown to expect good customer service and reliable infrastructure. We’ve been taught to avoid drawing a connection between those things – taxes, and services – to the point that we’ll send our elected leadership to work with an impossible task, and elect the ones who’ll most gleefully lie about their ability to complete it. And that is the real defining question in the 2014 election: will voters finally show the maturity and intelligence it takes, to pay for the things we all need, and turn away from comfortable lies and half-measures. Will we collectively find the credibility we need, to ask our fellow Canadians to do the same?

Spring is finally here and with it, the sounds of laughter and kids playing are in the air once again. Bike rides, shooting hoops and playground fun are just some of the ways kids get active in the spring and summer months. It’s a good thing too, because recent reports show that Canadian kids just aren’t getting enough exercise. According to the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology, kids should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every single day. Unfortunately, for many children that simply isn’t the case. This spring and summer, consider enrolling your child in an organized sport or physical activity, such as soccer, baseball, swim-

ming or cricket. Freida Rubletz, Regional Manager, Jumpstart Programs Greater Toronto Area, Canadian Tire Jumpstart, explains that in addition to the physical benefits, organized play also helps to: • Increase self esteem and self confidence • Develop leadership skills • Improve academic performance • Teach healthy lifestyle habits “As important as physical activity is for our young people, the reality is that one in three families in Canada can’t afford to enrol their kids in organized sports or physical activity programs,” continued Rubletz. “Charities like Jumpstart

remove some of those financial pressures so all kids can have the opportunity to get in the game.” Help bring back play in your community this May by supporting the Jumpstart Red Ball campaign. Head into your local Canadian Tire, Mark’s, Sport Chek, Atmosphere or National Sports store and donate $2 in exchange for your own Jumpstart Red Ball, representing the gift of play you are giving to a deserving child. One hundred per cent of your donation helps kids in your community. To learn more about how Jumpstart is making an impact in your community or to make a donation, visit canadiantire.ca/jumpstart.

With spring just around the corner, construction bins are popping up all over Bloor West Village and contractors are setting up shop for another busy season. Local residents and owners of Instyle Kitchens and Bathroom, Michael Lamarche and Gerry Turino, have been renovating in the area for over 12 years. With over 400 completed local renovation projects they have strong support from past clients who are now acting as references for their renovations of local kitchens, bathroom, basements, additions and large custom homes. Many of their past clients will invite new clients over for a quick tour of their completed work, giving Instyle a gold seal of approval. At Instyle, every project is treated as top priority. “A constant complaint we hear from local residents is how they hired a contractor to do what seemed to be a straight forward project and instead of taking three to four weeks to complete it, ended up dragging on for six to 12 months,” says Turino, a Master Electrician, Master builder and a Kitchen and Bath Designer. “Just have a

look around the area, the lawn sign goes up and it’s still there six months later.” With many successful projects behind them, Lamarche and Turino have the necessary experience needed to complete any project, big or small, on budget and on time. Just ask one of their many former clients. At Instyle Kitchens and Bathrooms, customers are provided with a one-stop shopping experience for a stress-free home renovation. When you make the initial phone call to 416-833-4343, a free in house consultation and quotation will be set up. At the meeting you’ll view a slide show of past, local projects. Then, a general ballpark figure is given

based on your project discussions. At a later date, you will be invited to the local showroom at 361 Jane St. (near Annette) to select all material cabinetry, countertops, backsplash, flooring, electrical, and plumbing for your dream kitchen and bathroom. Instyle also handles all kitchen cabinet layouts drawings, and permits. At the end of this second appointment, with all the material selected, Instyle will present an accurate cost for the project with a clear start and finish date. If you are planning a kitchen, bathroom or basement renovation please call 416-833-4343 or visit their newly redesigned website www.ikb.ca

All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks, the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.

What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting can cause your shingles to fail prematurely, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions.

on a cost per year basis.

What you should know about shingle quality: You have many shingle options with regard to style, colour, longevity and price. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal and longer life expectancy, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured

Peter & Greg Walker Contracting rank as a top 20 roofing company in North America for providing long term roof warranties. They have been voted Etobicoke’s Top Roofing Company 13 times (including 2014) by readers of the Etobicoke Guardian. They are fully insured and have manufacturer certified installers.

Designated seating areas are already in place throughout the TTC, but they’re often taken up by able-bodied riders who are either unaware or uncaring that the seats are not for them. In response to provincial accessibility requirements, the TTC is also introduc-

Travel time info on roadways wmajor The city has introduced anticipated travel time information on overhead electronic road signs at various locations. Similar to the TTC’s Next Bus transit updates system, the information gives motorists a chance to gauge how long it will take them to traverse major roadways such as the Gardiner Expressway, the Don Valley Parkway and Lake Shore Boulevard based on current traffic conditions. So far, 11 electronic signs are in place with plans to add seven more sometime this year. photo exhibit focused on flooding wSubway

Be prepared with a plan and survival kit, says Red Cross >>>from page 1 happen – and that is when one least expects it, according to Capt. Roman Wojnarski, a fire prevention officer. Wojnarski was a guest speaker at a recent meeting to discuss emergency preparedness, hosted by ParkdaleHigh Park Councillor Sarah Doucette. “The homeowner is always in shock,” Wojnarski told a small, but attentive audience who had gathered at St. Pius X Catholic School at the corner of Bloor West and Jane streets. “They’ll always say, ‘I never expected it to happen to me.’” However, statistics indi-

cate that fires are more apt to happen in the home. This is due, in part, because much of Toronto’s housing stock is decades old and isn’t equipped with the latest fire retardant measures, but more so because of such careless acts as unattended cooking or candles and careless smoking, Wojnarski said. He advised residents to be their own fire prevention inspector. “ T h e re a re c o m m o n sources of fire that get away from us,” he said. “They can result in catastrophic consequences. Prevention is paramount.” Make sure there are working smoke detectors on every

level of the home; have furnace, air conditioners and chimneys inspected regularly and have a home escape plan, he said. This meeting was the first of its kind the local councillor has hosted. “I didn’t know we needed one until July,” said Doucette, referring to Toronto’s rain-

storm on July 8 that saw a record-setting rainfall submerge city streets, trap commuters on GO trains and left residents in the dark for hours. The summer rainstorm was still fresh in Torontonians’ minds when the December ice storm struck, downing power lines and leaving people without power for days. Garett Christie of the Canadian Red Cross recommended that people get prepared in advance of a weather emergency by creating a survival kit with such items as a flashlight, blanket, non-perishable food and can

opener. The Red Cross suggests gathering enough supplies to be self-sufficient for 72 hours – whether at home or on the road. He urged everyone to sit down with family members to make a plan. Agree on a meeting place whether it’s a church, community centre or school or staying with family or friends in the next town. “Account for vulnerable family members, disabilities, the elderly – how would they be taken care of? Prepare for extra prescriptions; take into account pets’ needs,” Christie said. The Red Cross works in

partnership with the City of Toronto’s Office of Emergency Management, whose role is to help Toronto and its residents prepare for and deal with major emergencies and disasters. Allen Li, senior engineer with the city’s Water Infrastructure Management services, told residents to call 311 in the event of a flooded basement as well as their insurance company as soon as possible. Calling 311 is also recommended if residents have questions or need advice.

Lack of political will on issue caused group to stop its campaigning >>>from page 1 announcement last week by Premier Kathleen Wynne and Ontario Transportation Minister Glen Murray on a plan to electrify the GO train network within 10 years – said with proper provincial approvals and funding of around $450 million in place this year, work on converting UP to electric could begin as of 2015. “We’re starting electrifica-

tion of UP Express next year subject to an environmental approval and funding,” said McCuaig at the time. But Putnam, who has met with Murray and other representatives from the province as well as Metrolinx on multiple occasions, said he wouldn’t believe any statements until money is in place for UP electrification. “I don’t think Metrolinx makes the final decision, it’s

the premier and her cabinet,” he said. “The Liberals have made a variety of different pledges, but it’s a lack of money that’s stopping (electrification).” Putnam said a lack of political will demonstrated by all the major Ontario parties had caused the JTRC to stop campaigning on the issue, nor is it planning to endorse any pro-electrification candidates if a provincial election

is held. “We just don’t see any of the parties expressing a genuine commitment to move forward on electrification. It’s just a whole lot of talking, and at some point we just felt like we were banging our heads against the wall,” he said. Putnam also expressed hope Metrolinx will suspend plans on constructing around 10 kilometres of noise wall barriers five-metres-high

along the rail corridor to reduce noise and vibration from increased use of diesel trains, which Metrolinx is promising to run every 15 minutes when UP debuts just before the Pan American Games in 2015. E a r l i e r i n t h e y e a r, Metrolinx announced it was moving ahead with the full build of noise walls following community consultations which it said indicated wide-

spread support for the project. Construction is scheduled to start later this year. Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins said there are no plans to change course on the noise walls. “Noise walls are required even if the system is electrified,” she said by email.
