Child doesn’t lose ‘spunk’ despite cancer diagnosis Family speaks out to raise awareness about work done at The Hospital for Sick Children LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Kirby Kim looks at his daughter and thinks, “She’s the most amazing human being.” Every morning, when she gets out of bed, her father asks her, “How are you feeling, Maya?” “I’m good, Daddy,” she responds. “She’s so full of spunk. She’s not afraid to say what she feels,” said Kim. Yet, despite her outwardly sunny and outgoing demeanor, seven-year-old Maya Kim, a Grade 1 student at St. Pius X Catholic School, has been battling cancer for the past three years. On March 26, 2010, doctors informed Kim and his wife, Indira Guevara, that their little girl was suffering from Stage 4 Neuroblastoma. Maya and her mom were visiting Guevara’s native Equador after her father was diagnosed with cancer. There, Maya complained of a sore knee, but she continued to run around and play. Upon their return to Toronto, when the

pain persisted, Guevara took her daughter to the pediatrician. After a fall that injured her back, Maya got to the point where she couldn’t stand because she was in so much pain. Doctors initially thought she had pneumonia, but antibiotics did little to alleviate the pain. That’s when Kim and Guevara took their daughter to the emergency department at The Hospital for Sick Children. “Maya was standing and was putting on her jacket when she just collapsed,” recalled her mom, during a conversation at a Bloor West Village coffee shop late last month. When oncology doctors discovered a compressed fracture in her back, she was admitted that night. The next day, doctors took an ultrasound, which detected a tumour on Maya’s right adrenal gland, very close to the right kidney. “‘It’s neuroblastoma, it’s cancer,’ they said. It feels like someone punched you – things

changed forever,” said Kim. The cancer was detected around her spine, the top of her pelvis and sacrum, the top of her femur on both legs, the sternum area, small areas around her neck and right side of her frontal skull. Maya underwent five rounds of chemotherapy to shrink the tumours, followed by surgery to remove them, more chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, which almost killed her. “A year later, she went back to ballet; she had no hair and a nose tube. For me, I was hesitant, but the girls would come and ask her about it. She’d say, ‘I take medicine.’ She says cancer like ‘I have the flu,” said her mom. Overall, Kim and Guevara agree that their experience with the children’s hospital has been a positive one. However, the reality is grim. “Neuroblastoma is a cancer that’s hard to treat. You don’t know if the chemo is going to work. The treatment is so harsh,” said Kim.

Seven-year-old Maya Kim, a student at St. Pius X, receives treatment at SickKids hospital for Stage four neuroglastoma. She is pictured here with her parents, Indira Guevara and Kirby Kim.

In the fall of 2012, Maya’s family was dealt a devastating blow. Maya was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a precursor for acute myeloid leukemia. MDS is caused by therapy for neuroblastoma, pointed

out Kim. Approximately two to three percent of the children will develop secondary cancer as the result of therapy, he said. “She’s now fighting two cancers. We fell apart. You see your daughter and you

don’t have any choice, but to pick yourself up and fight,” said Guevara. Maya is now undergoing “maintenance chemo,” said her father. Currently, there is no evidence in her blood, but “translocations” are still evident for MDS; the neuroblastoma is stable. “She’s great. She plays with her friends, she’s going to ballet,” said her mother. “The school, the community has been great.” When Maya was first diagnosed, her Bloor Street West and Jane Street-area neighbours hosted a fundraising street party. The proceeds went to support the ‘Maya Kim fund for Neuroblastoma Research’ at SickKids (http:// my.e2rm.com/personalPage. aspx?SID=2605914). The couple agreed to tell their story to raise awareness. “For us, cancer was something that happened to other families. It can happen to anyone,” said Kim. Added Guevara, “I believe in miracles now.” Visit us online for more SickKids stories from across Toronto, including a photo essay and video: bit.ly/SickKidsedition

Focus on Healthy and Happy children

A

child is registered in the emergency department at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) every nine minutes. That tells you how critical the work of SickKids is in your neighbourhood, the City of Toronto and beyond. May is Healthy and Happy Month at SickKids and the goal is to raise funds and awareness for childhood health issues. This year’s emphasis is an issue we often fear to talk about – children and mental health. It’s an essential conversation. Some 10 to 20 per cent of youth are affected by a mental illness or disorder. Now silently, repeat that number to yourself and reflect on what that means. Now remember only one in five children who needs mental health services actually receives them. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth. That shouldn’t be. Every child deserves to be our view healthy and happy. Please support children’s Let’s talk health this month and visit special websites set up by mental health two SickKids: www.healthyandhappy.com – and kids May is the SickKids Healthy and Happy Month. This website offers many opportunities for interaction and discussion on any number of childhood illness topics, with an emphasis this year on child mental health. It’s a great place to start looking for mental health information. And there’s even a quiz on the website that visitors can take. www.aboutkidshealth.ca – This wonderful resource is essential for every parent. It’s a collection of health information from A to Z, along with news, stories and discussion of issues facing today’s youth. There are stories, video, instruction – and even a newsletter for you to sign up. You may not need parenting information. You know someone who does. Let them know about this site. SickKids is not a secret. More than 265,000 donors raised $111.7 million in 2012. You’ll find an impressive list of fundraising events in a calendar in today’s newspaper. Many events were initiated by community members. Torontonians, Canadians and people around the world are fortunate to have SickKids as a resource. Between health services and the largest child health research facility on the country, we need to recognize this great resource and take advantage of its community outreach. As they would say at SickKids, every child deserves to be healthy and happy.

The perils of not articulating a transit vision

W

atching the discussion on transit funding leaves the impression it is all about getting someone else to pay. While versions of this probably have been around since democracy was born, in the case of Toronto’s transit funding, our debate will lead provincial decision makers to the conclusion that Queen’s Park needs to dictate our funding and responsibilities. Although politicians swear they never pay attention to polls, the correlation is amazing between councillors’ positions and that of their constituents, as reported by the latest IpsosReid transportation survey. For example, almost 60 per cent of Scarborough and Etobicoke residents use the car as their primary means of transportation. These districts are the least supportive of highway tolls, a fuel tax or vehicle registration tax. Residents in Toronto’s core have different ways of getting around. Eighteen per cent report they move mainly by walking, and six per cent by bike. These figures are at least three times higher than

david soknacki beyond the headlines most of Toronto’s suburbs. Almost half of downtowners describe their primary means of transportation to be public transit, while only one quarter use the car. So it is not surprising that downtown residents and their councillors advocate prioritizing public transit, cycling and pedestrian infrastructure through payments made mostly by motorists. Nor is it startling that motorists, mostly suburbanites, are not enthusiastic about paying more for someone else’s mode of transport. Downtowners and suburbanites only come together when they find someone else to pay or when they agree that they are overburdened by income or property taxes. Complicating matters are tax policies that no longer connect revenues with services. Purchase an average car for $25,000 and your $3,250 in HST goes to the federal and provincial governments. Ditto for the amounts you pay for insurance and repair. Fill up the

tank with 60 litres at $1.22 per litre, and about onethird of your total goes in taxes, $10.40 to the federal government, and $13.94 to the province. Nothing goes directly to the municipalities. As a result, motorists do pay for the privilege of driving. It’s just that they don’t pay to municipalities. Neither the federal nor provincial governments wish to give any but a small portion of those taxes to municipalities. But city dwellers look mostly to council to address their road and transit needs. As everyone looks for someone else to pay, moving around in our cities has become a problem. Since council will not decide on how to finance transit, and has shown itself unable to articulate a vision, the provincial government, through its transit agency Metrolinx, has no choice but to step in. While it is human nature to want someone else to pay, and self-preservation to let someone else take the responsibility, the need to have our transit and transportation system fixed by Queen’s Park will not go down in history as one of our great moments.

ShelterBox has provided shelter to more than one million

people around the world following such large-scale disasters as the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the tsunami in Japan in March and the flooding in northern Peru. “We’re obviously most concerned about helping young victims and their families,” said Saleem Kassum, a volunteer on the board of directors, at ShelterBox’s national office. Kassum, who has been involved with ShelterBox for about two years, said it’s so important to bring normalcy to a child’s life after disaster strikes. During the devastating Haiti earthquake in 2010, four-yearold Carlos not only lost his home, his leg was amputated above the knee. ShelterBox emergency responders captured a photo of the little boy colouring with supplies from

the children’s activity pack, which includes such items as coloured pencils, crayons and a notebook. Last year, when torrential rains caused flash floods across southern Russia and many families had to escape their homes to take refuge in trees or on rooftops, volunteers used ShelterBox tents as a children’s nursery. “We used the tents to run activities for children during the day when the sun was especially hot,” said volunteer Elena Korykhalova. “We were able to invite all children of the camp settlement to our nursery and on our busiest day volunteers worked with a group of 30 children of different ages.”

Time for your pet to visit the dentist? When was the last time you looked in your pets’ mouth? Most people either don’t think to look in their mouths, or don’t really know what they are looking for once they are in there. Here are some general oral guidelines: Before you go in, have a smell! Bad breath is the first indicator that your pet may have some dental disease. Look for red, swollen gums, tartar build up (yellow/ brown accumulation on the surface of the tooth), broken or fractured teeth and loose teeth. If you notice any of the above, a trip to your veterinarian is the next step. An examination is key to evaluating dental disease. From there your veterinarian will discuss your options. Depending on the level of your pets’ dental disease your vet may recommend a dental cleaning. Now that you know your pet needs a dental cleaning, what does that mean? Your pet will require a general anaesthetic for the procedure (it is impossible to provide adequate dental care without it).

The procedure is very similar to the cleaning humans get. Teeth are cleaned and polished on the surface and below the gum line, ideally dental x-rays of each tooth are taken to ensure there is no disease under the gum line. The veterinarian will examine each tooth, checking for pockets or gaps where bacteria will hide and cause disease. If any teeth are diseased, the veterinarian will freeze the area and remove the tooth. Once the procedure is complete your pet is woken up and recovered. Pain medication and sometimes antibiotics are needed at home. If you are concerned that your pet is suffering from dental disease or if you would like to learn more about your pet’s dental health, please discuss it with your veterinarian. If left untreated, dental disease can affect your pet’s internal organs and quality of life. – Dr. Suzanne Lyons DVM and Practice Owner of Bloor Animal Hospital 2387 Bloor St West, 416-767-5817

The Villager examines the thriving local community spirit demonstrated through its residents.

Revitalizing the neighbourhood one building at a time DIGIN members bring community together for Doors Open Davenport

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com An inaugural event created and hosted by community group DIGIN invites residents and visitors to explore the ever-evolving BloordaleJunction Triangle neighbourhood as part of Jane’s Walk on Saturday. Inspired by Doors Open Toronto and Jane’s Walk, which celebrates the ideas and legacy of activist and urbanist Jane Jacobs, Doors Open Davenport encourages everyone to walk, cycle, learn, chat and share stories while investigating perhaps lesser-known and intriguing buildings that have had several re-incarnations in the neighbourhood. Doors Open Davenport is yet another communityminded function initiated by DIGIN, whose aim is to revitalize culturally, socially, environmentally and economically the area surrounding Bloordale. Its chair, Donna Cowan, credits fellow DIGIN member Roy Mitchell for pitching the idea during a conversation the two had at Davenport Councillor Ana Bailão’s summer barbecue last year. dedicated team Since the fall, a dedicated DIGIN team has worked tirelessly to co-ordinate the day. Each of the five buildings showcased as part of Doors Open Davenport has both historical and architectural significance, said Cowan. “The goal is to create awareness and appreciation

for the architecture and history in our neighbourhood,” she said, citing the former General Electric building and water tower at 224 Wallace Ave. as one example of the structures on the tour. “Now, it’s a cool warehouse and office space. It’s probably one of the most photographed buildings in our neighbourhood that’s been re-purposed for modern use.” It also includes the onetime Boys and Girls Club at 45 Ernest Ave., which was in its first life a lumber yard, but is now a gallery; the steam plantturned Metropolis Factory at 50 Edwin Ave. and the former Tower Automotive building

at 158 Sterling Ave.. “Plans are in place, it’s on the precipice of being developed,” said Cowan. “It’s a beautiful building, I’m thrilled they’re preserving it.”

The businesses are flourishing because there are more people on the street. You see mommies walking with baby carriages. When they feel safe, you know the neighbourhood is safe.

interesting place to live.” Founded in 2002, DIGIN ensures it initiates plans and events that contribute to a “green, clean, safe and civil”

neighbourhood. Both Cowan and DIGIN’s planning activist Ann Homan have seen their neighbourhood evolve drastically since moving in back in 2005. Cowan also joined the local Community Police Liaison Committee because the neighbourhood was known for its crime issues. DIGIN’s Big on Bloor Festival and subsequent Nuit Blanche event has played a big part in the neighbourhood’s revitalization. “The businesses are flourishing because there are more people on the street,” said Cowan. “You see mommies walking with baby carriages. When they feel safe, you know the neighbourhood is safe.” Homan said she was inspired to move to Bloordale in 2005 for its affordable housing prices. “It was a well-rounded urban neighbourhood that had some issues, but that didn’t frighten me,” she said. “After going through some major economic changes, it has evolved considerably.” Prior to the inaugural Big on Bloor Festival and Nuit Blanche events, storefronts remained empty, under-used or misused. Now, they’re close to being full. Homan is pleased to say that all the social services and agencies along the retail strip have remained. Civility towards everyone has remained one of DIGIN’s priorities from the get-go. Near and dear to Homan’s heart is the issue of land development. “Our underlying goal is to get people aware of how land use and urban planning affect

the livability of the neighbourhood,” she said. “A lot of land in the neighbourhood has been rezoned from industrial to residential and mixed-use,” said Homan. DIGIN meets regularly on the second Tuesday of every month at the Wallace Emerson Community Centre, 1260 Dufferin St. at 7 p.m. in the Ambrico Room.

exploring the spirit of the community

What do you love about your community?

“I feel connected to my neighbourhood because I work here. We’re connected through parents, teachers and schools. I get to see kids that are in our program when I go to the local flower shop. I pick up my groceries, go for a drink after work.”

Residents weren’t shy about telling The Villager why they love living, working and playing in the neighbourhood. Here are some of their responses. By LISA RAINFORD | Photos by MARY GAUDET

Katherine Roy

“I like the fact that it’s emerging. There’s new restaurants and bars. I’m kind of a foodie. There’s an independent butcher – I can get all my food within a couple of blocks – I hear there’s a great bike shop in the neighbourhood.” Brent Robinson

“We moved here six-and-a-half years ago; from an apartment to a house. I leave my car at home and walk everywhere. There are tons of moms; we get a coffee, we go to the mall.”

“I moved to Toronto and found a place here and we’ve been here ever since 2005. It’s slowly changing, more families are coming in. There are more independent places like this (Intergalactic Travel Authority).”

Just Smile Dental Hygiene Care As the Dental Hygienist/Owner of Just Smile Dental Hygiene Care, I felt compelled to express my heartfelt views of the Community Spirit of Baby Point. I spent 2 years searching for the ideal neighbourhood where I could set up my Dental Hygiene Clinic. I studied many areas of the GTA but found myself returning to the Baby Point area over and over again. It offers a feeling of closeness that you find in small communities. There is a great sense of community spirit and support from both, the local business owners as well as the residents. I am fortunate to be both: a business owner and a resident. My Dental Hygiene Clinic serves the Baby Point community which allows me to meet many truly wonderful people/families. I look forward to meeting and serving many more people in this amazing community of Baby Point!

“I just moved to the Junction. I was finding Roncesvalles too chichi. The Junction is real people. It’s people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds. I feel relaxed. It’s got a mix of old establishments, cafes. It has a nice feel to it.”

What do you love about your community?

“I’ve lived here 13 years. I love it because everything you need is easy to find; the convenience stores are open late.”

Walter Baleja

“I moved here for a job six months ago. I love it because everything is within walking distance, the fantastic stores, the library.”

John Agnew

“It’s a friendly neighbourhood. I used to live on Eglinton Avenue – it’s business-oriented. Took me a year to get used to it (here). I wouldn’t go back. I love it. I’ve been here three years. I’m part of an exercise group. I’ve just come from a Tai Chi class. There are Sunday walks in the park. There’s always something to do.”

Judith Binder

“I love it. The mom and pop shops, its accessibility, the park. It has everything you need, cute places to get breakfast.”

“I live in the Humber Valley. There are lots of places to eat.”

BASEMENT with help from Ontario Basement Lowering

At Ontario Basement Lowering we are often asked, “What exactly is it that you do?” Here are some answers to the most frequently asked questions:

Want your Bloor Buddy to be crowned

WHAT IS BASEMENT LOWERING? Basement lowering is the transformation of a short, cramped basement or crawl space into a full

height space of eight feet tall or more.

WHAT IS UNDERPINNING? Underpinning is the method by which the existing foundation of a building is extended deeper into the ground by pouring new concrete directly underneath the existing foundation walls. Byextendingthefoundation walls deeper into the ground, we are able to lower the concrete floor.

WHY WOULD I WANT TO LOWER MY BASEMENT? Basement lowering is the best way to add usable living space to your home without having to lose your backyard to an addition. Additionally, the cost is typically lower than that of an addition of equivalent square footage. For more information please contact Ontario Basement Lowering at 416-4943999 or visit online at www. basementlowering.com

Wouldn’t it be great to have more living space without having to move? Transform your short basement into... A huge kids playroom or extra bedroom. A home office or basement apartment. A home theatre or games room. Is it possible? Yes it is.

Keller Williams Neighborhood Realty agents to renovate child care centre for RED DAY RED (Renew, Energize and Donate) Day is an annual Keller Williams Realty international service initiative dedicated to improving our local communities. We believe that the higher purpose of business is to Give, Share and Care. Each year, on the second Thursday in May, almost 80,000 agents from across the United States and Canada participate in a wide range of projects, devoting their time to renewing and energizing the communities they serve. This year, newly opened Keller Williams Neighbourhood Realty Brokerage, located at 2968 Dundas St. W., in The Junction, has partnered with a local day care that is very deserving of an upgrade. Family owned since 1972, Happy Day Child Care Centre (676 Jane St.) is a fully licensed facility supporting families in the Jane/St. Clair area. Very

well connected in the neighbourhood, the facility is an integral part of the community providing an incredibly important child care service to many families that are new to the country, single parents and also children with special needs. They believe in fostering creativity and acceptance in guiding the children they care for. They run year-round integrated programs for preschool, kindergarten and school aged children who have a variety of needs. Why do they need our help? With the integration of Full Day Kindergarten, child care centers face new challenges. In an effort to reach new families it is imperative to provide an uplifting learning environment. Our initial visit to Happy Day showed us how it is a vitally important part of our community, committed to the children and families they are

serving. We are thrilled to help them continue to do so, along with your help for our RED Day makeover. Participants from our Junction office of 30 strong are excited to complete this makeover in the 24 hr period from May 8-9. We are up for this very worthwhile challenge! Activities will include an outdoor adventure day for the kids, a makeover of the facility and a celebratory “reveal” of the work done, with food, a visit from a Toronto Fire truck, and refreshments for the families, staff of the Center and all of the volunteers and participants. For more information, please contact KW Cares Chairperson: Jackie Carron at 416-236-1392 or Jackie@ jackiecarron.com. Follow our progress on facebook at www.facebook.com/ KWNeighbourhoodRedDay.

The transit agency had already committed to installing Wi-Fi on subway platforms on a pilot basis, but the locations of the stations were not known. In a tweet last week, TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said Bloor-Yonge and St. George will be the first stations to receive the ad-supported Wi-Fi, which is provided by the telecom company Broadcast Australia. With Selective Mutism, they can’t speak in front of others.” Cecilia was diagnosed in 2010 at the age of six. Her parents thought she was shy as a baby and then at day care, but when she still wasn’t speaking when she started school and gymnas-

tics, they knew there was a problem. Their family doctor referred them to a psychologist and later to SickKids where, after an assessment with Monga, Cecilia joined the Young Children’s Group. The only treatment of its kind in Ontario, the cognitive therapy program teaches children how to recognize their feelings while teaching them relaxation strategies. Cecilia tells herself to “be brave,” she said softly as she coloured at the dining room table alongside her brother, Nicholas, 5, and her mother on a recent April evening. “We do some meditation-type exercises,” said Gonzalez. “She had a night-

Gonzalez has nothing but compliments for her daughter’s care at SickKids, particularly Shaw’s efforts. “The advice she gets from Mar yanne – she speaks at Ceci’s level,” said Gonzalez. Selective Mutism is a

relatively rare condition and is more common in early childhood. Less than one per cent of children are diagnosed, said Monga. Currently, her oldest patient is in Grade 10; no one knows yet what happens to selectively mute children when they become teens. It is a hereditary condition, she said. Gonzalez and her husband know the condition comes from his side of the family. His sister struggled with Selective Mutism as a child. She is in her 30s now and is doing fine. “We kind of knew the signs,” said Gonzalez. However, Cecilia is doing much better now. “We don’t see it as an issue anymore. New environments, new people; there’s nothing to worry about,” said Gonzalez.
