One Brave Night brings mental health issues to light at a time when sufferers feel most alone LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com
N
ot a day goes by that Halle Glen, a Grade 11 student at Etobicoke’s Silverthorn Collegiate Institute, doesn’t think about her best friend Abby Fedosoff. It’s been just more than a year since Abby, a competitive swimmer, writer, and artist, committed suicide. She was only 15. Still, when Glen hears her friend’s name or catches a glimpse of someone’s long, blond hair, it’s a shock to her system. “She is always on my mind,” Glen said. Glen wished she’d known just how much pain Abby was in. Many of her friends and teachers had no idea the Markland Woodsarea resident was living with ObsessiveCompulsive Disorder (OCD), an illness Abby kept secret. “I would have done anything in my power to help her,” said Glen, revealing she believed her friend kept her illness to herself for fear of what people would think. That’s why Glen is participating in the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s (CAMH) ‘One Brave Night,’ an all-night challenge to raise awareness of and funds to defeat mental illness, which takes place Friday, May 13. Glen called Abby, “one of the most amazing people I knew,” on her online CAMH One Brave Night Personal Page. “She was beautiful, kind, loving and compassionate,” wrote Glen, adding she was a fan of the group One Direction, loved dogs, her family and friends. No one is immune to mental illness, said Dr. Katy Kamkar, a psychologist at CAMH and an assistant professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of Toronto. One in five Canadians will experience mental illness or addiction in their lifetime, yet two thirds of those say they feel alone, Kamkar said. “It touches every single person either directly or indirectly,” she said. CAMH’s all-night challenge is an evolution of an event that was initiated last year called ‘From Darkness to Light,’ which raised more than $700,000 in support of Canada’s largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital and research centre. “The program has really taken off,” said Kamkar, with more than 1,500 people registered as of May 3. Abby Fedosoff, a 15-year-old student in Toronto’s west end, suffered from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and took her life. to stay up all night because people living with mental illness indicate that nighttime is the most difficult for them, Kamkar said. The goal is to reduce the stigma of mental health as well as the suffering in silence while raising funds and encouraging people to seek treatment. Kamkar treats clients with a variety of mental health issues, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety and stress disorders as well as occupational trauma. She said it’s important to provide loved ones with the proper support – listen, ask how they’re doing, go with them to medical appointments and perhaps, most importantly, show the right attitude. “Attitudes can be harmful. Saying things like, ‘Relax, you’ll get over it’ or ‘You’ll get better,’ any of these can feed the stigma,” Kamkar said. “They can make people feel guilty and reduces their sense of self-worth and prolongs recovery. Show empathy instead. Provide the care that’s needed.” After Abby died, Glen’s sister, Kendall,
revealed she had been hiding a mental illness. Once she shared what she was facing, her family and friends rallied around her. “My sister has a good support system,” Glen said. “I think the key is to find one person who you’re comfortable with to talk to.” Suicide is the second leading cause of death among Canadian youth, according to Statistics Canada 2014 data. Youth who die by suicide are frequently experiencing an undiagnosed or untreated mental illness, Government of Canada stats say. “Young people ages 15 to 24 are most likely to experience mental illness or substance abuse than any other age group in Canada,” Kamkar said. “After accidents, suicide is the second leading cause of death among 10 to 19 year olds.” CAMH is home to the Slaight Family Centre for Youth in Transition. This is Canada’s first centre dedicated to understanding and treating severe mental illness and addictions in youth from the late teens through early adulthood and a world first. It combines research and clinical care to advance new approaches for early intervention and recovery. CAMH treats more than 30,000 people and responds to more than 500,000 outpatient visits annually. Its ER sees about 7,400 patients each year, a 76 per cent increase since 2006. CAMH provides specialized treatment for psychosis episodes, early Alzheimer’s disease, drug addiction and depression, children with behavioural issues and people with schizophrenia, among a host of other ailments. CAMH boasts as many as 3,000 physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists, researchers, educators, volunteers and students and has recruited world-renowned, award-winning specialists to many of its clinical programs and research initiatives. Glen’s ‘Team Abby’ has already raised more than $2,300 toward One Brave Night and pledge money is still coming in after an April 18 swimathon. The teen, who lives on the Brampton-Mississauga border, said she and at least 20 of her friends are ready for a night of air hockey, ping pong and, if the weather permits, swimming.

We must adapt to condo boom T
here’s a shift taking place in Toronto that really should not come as a surprise given the amount of condominium construction happening in our city. One need only look at the number of cranes, not just downtown, but also in other parts of the city, to recognize this building boom. But the stereotype regarding the people who these condos are being built for is changing rapidly in Toronto. They are no longer the choice for young people, seniors and those looking to be landlords. More and more families are saying no to the so-called suburban dream of a house and yard, and are choosing to buy condos and raise their families in them. Certainly some of this is driven by price, and the fact that single-family homes in Toronto are becoming more and more out of reach for many. For some, condo life is strictly a financial our view decision, but for many others it’s become a lifestyle preference. As Amy Geer told Metroland Wise to plan Media Toronto of the decision she for ‘vertical and her husband Andy made to buy a two-bedroom condo in the communities’ Fort York area, it was a question of financial balance and the kind of life they wanted to live. “If we bought a house we wouldn’t be able to afford a baby; a condo would allow us to have the lifestyle and the baby,” she said. And that’s changing the way the City of Toronto’s planning department has to think and operate. The planning department initiated the study Growing Up: Planning for Children in New Vertical Communities as it works on ways to deal with what will be the increasing needs of families with children in what had previously been condo communities geared to adult residents. The study is looking at how these high-density condo communities can better accommodate “households with children and youth.” That’s an issue for the present, and it will certainly raise some challenges as many of these communities are lacking in both recreational and educational spaces nearby. This shift also puts pressure on Toronto’s public and Catholic school boards, which will find themselves with growing numbers of students living nowhere near schools, while many schools in established “suburban” neighbourhoods are seeing severely declining enrolment. As our city changes, so must we change the way we think, plan and adapt.

Tory well versed to take on raccoons
I
was struck last week, attending the official launch of Toronto’s new raccoon-proof green bins on a lovely, quiet street in Scarborough, at just how suitable the event was to the talents of our current mayor, John Tory. That may sound mean, but I don’t intend it to be. When Tory arrived at the foot of the driveway of Scarborough resident Rhoda Potter, the host of the launch event, he could not have been more charming, or dare we say it, funny. He joked around with the city sanitation worker who was driving the truck. He kidded around with Ms. Potter, who was demonstrating her own raccoonproofing on her green bin as a contrast with the city’s new, Atlanta-designed higher tech solution (Ms. Potter used a rock and a bungee cord). He kidded around with reporters while demonstrating the even higher-tech robot
david nickle the city arm that is designed to lift the green bin into the sky and dump its offal in the truck from a height even raccoons would find dizzying. At least we think he was kidding when he suggested one of us try the robot arm. The whole event went like one of those stand-up comedy routines that ask the audience if they’ve ever noticed how absurd something-or-other is, how irritating whoeverwe’re-irritated-with is or (as in this case) how darn cute and clever whateveris-vexing-us is. It occurs to me that this is one of the most formidable skills that Tory brings to the job of mayor, in the post-Rob Ford Toronto: the ability to be pleasant and funny, an ability honed no doubt by his years hosting
talk radio, and one that has lent the mayor a great advantage with the public. It is no coincidence that Tory’s biggest successes fall into this category, too, first pointing out, and then dealing with, the many small irritants in city life. One of Tory’s first acts as mayor was to announce a towing blitz on those darned cars that keep parking illegally on downtown streets during rush hour. Don’t you hate those? And isn’t it absurd to pay the equivalent of a meal out, to haul your kids onto the subway for a Sunday trip? Free rides for children was the answer to that. And then there was the business of the raccoons. They’re comedy gold, those clever little, erm, bandits. Dealing with the ingenuity of raccoons has turned us all into hapless coyotes trying to catch a road runner, and Tory is more than happy to deliver the ACME raccoon-proof
bin, that (like all ACME products in Road Runner cartoons) looks raccoon proof, if possibly not fool proof. It made for a breezy and pleasant afternoon last week, having a bit of fun in Scarborough with Ms. Potter, commiserating about a silly but still troublesome problem and offering up a simple solution. As I write this, I’m watching Toronto Council try and figure out another troublesome problem – the city’s coyote-and-roadrunner relationship with UberX, and the troubled taxi industry. If only the solution to this problem were as simple as building a better green bin, our excellent mayor would know just what to do.

Concert raises awareness for autism The Ausum Charity for Autism is set to host its inaugural fundraiser Saturday, June 4 at 7 p.m. at The MOD Club, 722 College St. United for Autism 2016: A concer t for Autism Awareness will feature the musical stylings of three local bands – Big Night Out, The SUVs and Jeff Eager as well as a slideshow showcase of art created by some individuals with autism. Founded in 2015, Ausum
Charity’s goal is to help integrate autistic individuals into society by providing funding to low-income households for Intense Behavioral Intervention (IBI) therapy. Ausum Charity’s founder, Yojna Gupta, not only recognized a gap in provincial funding, but also found that applicants often encounter long wait times to receive IBI therapy from the government. Ausum Charity also supports an autism
awareness program called the “Gallery of Inspiration”, which showcases art created by autistic individuals. The purpose of these galleries is to help the public become aware of the hidden capabilities of such individuals. The event is open to the public, but only to individuals 19 and older. Tickets cost $20 and can be purchased online through www.ausumcharity.org or at the door.

Davenport bridge opponents pen open letter highlighting concerns LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com As residents viewed new panoramic images of the Metrolinx proposed elevated two-track train bridge during a public meeting last Wednesday evening, several people shouted “Shame on you” while others laughed. A capacity crowd packed the gymnasium at St. Sebastian Catholic School in the Dufferin and Bloor West streets area to find out what the provincial transit agency’s representatives had to say about initial results of an environmental assessment (EA), which included noise and vibration impacts, and to check out additional renderings for a better sense of the impact the bridge would have on nearby homes. “When I look at this I don’t see the response to the community. We are worried this is going to become a graffitied, dangerous place,” said resident Janet Mador, pointing to one of the panoramic views of the bridge through the neighbourhood. “The things that are important to the people in this community aren’t

Design renderings of a bridge Metrolinx wants to construct to replace the Davenport Diamond rail crossing, which some residents are opposing.
even on your radar,” Mador said. Residents remain extremely skeptical about the EA’s findings regarding noise and vibration levels. Sam Kulendrum, a noise specialist with J.E. Coulter Associates, explained that without the overpass, there would be only a modest growth in GO Transit service with a total of 36 trains daily. With the bridge, as many as 180 electric trains could use the corridor and significant noise is predicted in the north and south sections of the overpass. The
removal of the diamond would reduce the noise significantly. Metrolinx’s preferred option is to build the elevated two-track bridge coined The Guideway, to address the congestion on the Davenport Diamond rail crossing where GO Transit and CP freight trains converge. The bridge, Metrolinx says, is necessary to double the existing service on the Barrie corridor. Its design will include a skylight that will allow for natural light and greenery below, according to
Metrolinx chief design excellence officer Beth Kapusta. It will also include different qualities of stainless steel. That “luxurious” landscaping, pointed out one resident, would require maintenance and questioned who would pay for it. Spokesperson Erin Moroz said Metrolinx needs community input and that it’s had initial meetings with the city about the maintenance. “We need a partnership with the city,” she told her audience. “We’re committed to funding what’s shown on these images.” Yet, Toronto City Council voted against the bridge in December, pointed out one resident who said because of this, “the city’s not going to support your (maintenance) of the bridge.” Community advocacy group Options for Davenport conducted its own EA, “Our EA, Our Say,” which included a noise study, detailed community survey and an evaluation of deficiencies in Metrolinx’s current proposal. Standing beneath an elevated rail corridor while a GO train passes overhead will sound as loud as standing 300 metres from a jet taking off, charges the report.
“Metrolinx has talked about building a public square, farmers’ market and outdoor movie theatre under the overpass, but who is going to want to sit and watch a movie with a jet taking off overhead every seven minutes,” Options spokesperson Sam Barbieri said in a statement. Metrolinx admitted it hadn’t measured the predicted noise for below the bridge. A number of community organizations, including the Bloordale Business Improvement Area, the Bloor Improvement Group, Davenport Village Community Association, DIGIN, Friends of the West Toronto Railpath, Junction Triangle Rail Committee and Options, banded together to pen an open letter to Metrolinx. “To be clear, our community recognizes and supports the expansion of public transit across Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area to create a stronger region. However, when this project was announced, we feel that our community was robbed of the opportunity to consider the risks, benefits, and opportunities between a bridge, tunnel, or trench,” the letter says.

‘Idiot’ sorry for overtaking streetcar A self-professed “idiot” motorist apologized this week for cutting off riders disembarking a TTC streetcar. As detailed in a Reddit post published Monday, the user blamed a “lapse in judgement” for overtaking a stopped 504 King streetcar at Strachan Avenue as passengers got off. “I honestly had a lapse in judgement and instead of stopping when the streetcar slowed, I continued moving and as such endangered the people getting off,” states the penitent motorist. According to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, all vehicles must leave at least two metres of space from the nearest doors of a stationary streetcar.
The choices, whittled down from 884 public entries, were unveiled last week as the finalists of an online contest for the planned 1.75 kilometres of continuous public space under the Gardiner Expressway, from Strachan to Spadina avenues. You can vote for your favourite option once a day until Saturday. Announced last year by the city, the $25-million project is fully funded through a private donation. Waterfront Toronto is co-ordinating construction and hoping to have it done by mid-2017.

One-of-a-kind Just for Kids Clinic reopens at St. Joe’s after renovations LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The third floor of the Our Lady of Mercy Wing at St. Joseph’s Health Centre was abuzz with activity and the voices of children as the hospital hosted a grand reopening celebration for its renovated and expanded Just for Kids Clinic, Wednesday morning. As toddlers and elementary school-aged kids checked out the new playground, interactive games, and peep holes that provide a glimpse into a magical world behind the walls, St. Joe’s staff provided tours of the rejuvenated space to donors, patients and families. Inspired by the nature, greenery, and animals of High Park, and nearby waterways, including Grenadier Pond and Lake Ontario, the Just for Kids Clinic includes four patient examination rooms with their own animal and theme – each bed is an animal, like a hippo, an elephant and a lion, and is decorated to complement each character. Dr. Eddy Lau, chief of pediatrics, who led one of the tours, said his vision for the design and renovation of the clinic was to bring elements of the local community inside the hospital. “We didn’t want the space to feel like a sterile, clinical environment. We wanted it to be welcoming and feel like an extension of the neighbourhood,” he said. Maria Dyck, president and CEO of St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation, a mom herself, said children get sick at the most inconvenient times. That’s why 25 years ago, pediatricians at the hospital saw the need to establish a kids-only treatment centre. “They created a walk-in clinic that’s open 363 days a year and staffed it themselves,” Dyck told her audience. “They based this clinic in the hospital – that was a first and it still is.” The Just for Kids Clinic is the only pediatrician-run walk-in clinic inside a hospital in Toronto. “Now, parents have a choice. If they can’t see their family doctor or don’t have one, they can come here. It’s been a huge help,” Dyck

said. In recognition of CIBC’s $1 million gift in support of the hospital’s $70 million Promise Campaign, the Just for Kids Clinic now bears the bank’s name. Dyck acknowledged and thanked other such donors as the Selke Family and the Front Street Capital Charitable Foundation, the R.P. Bratty Family Foundation and the Sprott Foundation for helping the hospital exceed its fundraising goal of $1.5 million in support of the Just for Kids Clinic. Victor Dodig, CIBC president and CEO, and cochair of St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation Promise Campaign, said the hospital has played a “near and dear role” in his life. Between the ages of four and six, Dodig suffered from fevers regularly. At the time, he lived with his family in Parkdale and each time he was sick, his mother would walk him to the hospital where they used rubbing alcohol and ice baths to bring the fever down, he recalled.
“I can’t say enough about this hospital,” Dodig said. Last year, the hospital saw 57,000 visits from children – of those 12,000 were to the Just for Kids Clinic. St. Joe’s is anticipating an increase in its volumes and so has added another pediatrician to its roster, which will allow more patients to be seen and more quickly. Amid the new reception, waiting area, children’s playground, interactive games, and clinic exam rooms, there are murals adorning the walls. These were illustrated by award-winning local artists Sydney Smith and Mike Ellis. St. Joseph’s Health Centre is a Catholic community teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto that has served the communities of west Toronto and beyond since its founding by the Sisters of St. Joseph nearly a century ago. Jane’s Walk returns to Toronto streets for 10th year This weekend, thousands of Torontonians will walk through the city they love during the 10th Annual Jane’s Walk Festival of free, citizen-led walking tours. The project, which started in Toronto, puts people face to face in spontaneous conversations about where their communities are headed – locally and around the world in nearly 200 cities across six continents.
The annual festival is in memory of the late Toronto activist and urbanist Jane Jacobs who famously wrote that “Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.” A decade after her passing, and on the 100th anniversary of her birth, Toronto residents continue to participate in this neighbour-
hood storytelling tradition that opens eyes, hearts, and minds. “This year’s festival is a snapshot of the issues that Torontonians care about – and it goes way beyond our streets and buildings. People are hosting tours to talk about a whole range of experiences and questions about the city: from the refugee experience to homelessness, affordable internet to payday money lenders,” said executive
director Denise Pinto in a statement. “Jane would have been proud that people are in dialogue about the issues that matter to them, and that this project encourages us all to think for ourselves and advocate for diverse civic needs.“ A tour of the ‘Under Gardiner’ project will open a conversation about aging infrastructure and its potential to be transformed. A tour starting at city hall will explore

safety in public space for Muslim women. An Etobicoke tour will be the first of its kind: led by a deaf activist. Many more tours are slated for 40 wards, looking at Toronto through the eyes of people who live in each neighbourhood. There is no registration and all walks are free. He’ll be surrounded by an entourage of club members, staff and police officers on bikes and in patrol cars for his latest fundraising effort ‘Push For Hope’ in support of the Dupont Street and Dovercourt Road-area club’s Music Makers program. He has officially kicked off the campaign to raise $7,500 to purchase musical instruments. “Kids from Dovercourt who will benefit from the program will come with me,” Kuck told The Villager in a recent
interview. “When I start off, the sled will be empty, even though it still weighs 90 pounds.” At each half-kilometre mark, more weight will be added, the top cop said. The weight is symbolic of the challenges the kids face in achieving their goals. “A number of the youth from the club will speak briefly about the personal hardships they have faced, from poverty, homelessness, and joblessness in their family,” Kuck said. “When they discuss these things, that’s when I’ll add more weight.” Not only will club members speak, but also staff, who will talk about what the club offers to support children, teens and young adults. As they near the finish line, weight will be lifted from the sled, symbolizing the weight lifted from youths’ shoulders
features guitar, drum, steel pan and keyboard lessons taught by professional teachers with instruments leased from Long and Mcquade. One hundred per cent of the proceeds from Push for Hope will go towards purchasing musical instruments and equipment. This is not Kuck’s first foray into athletic endeavors in the name of charity. Kuck spent four days and three nights dog sledding 100 kilometres to James Bay in an effort to raise thousands of dollars for Victim Services Toronto. He also embarked on a canoe half-marathon on Lake Ontario he coined ‘Paddling for Provisions,’ raising awareness of those in need while collecting non-perishable food items. The Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club can be found at 180 Westmoreland Ave. while 11 Division Police is at 2054 Davenport Rd. with help from the boys and girls club. At its heaviest, the sled will weigh 300 pounds. “It’ll be difficult,” Kuck confessed. Push for Hope takes place
on Saturday, June 18 from 10 a.m. until noon. The event will include a free community barbecue. “The event is really, really great,” said Dovercourt Clubhouse program director
Matteo Severino. “It will raise awareness of the struggles inner city youth face and the lack of opportunities they have.” The Music Makers program, for kids ages eight to 15,

Until now, Rhoda Potter had the best-engineered green bin on her street. She had no choice: the big, smart raccoons that prowl up and down Agincourt Avenue meant either she had to build a better green bin or wake up every morning to stinky organic waste spread up and down her driveway. “We don’t have a garage attached to our home, so the compost has to stay outside,” Potter said. “Other than just cleaning up all the time, I thought, I have to devise another method.” So for years, Potter augmented the city’s metallatched green bin with a piece of brick and cement salvaged from a demolition – lashed by bungee cord to the top of the lid – and the whole contraption jammed tight in between her garbage and recycling bins. It was good, but Potter admitted it was not good enough. Time and time again, the nocturnal bandits would find a way to bash their way into the tasty compost inside. Last week, that all changed. Potter was one of the first Scarborough residents to receive Toronto’s new raccoonresistant compost bins. It is bigger, stronger, more

temperature-resistant than the current model. Mayor John Tory showed up last Thursday personally to demonstrate the contraption, and make it clear that the “war on the raccoon” had just gotten real. “I told the raccoons that this day would come, when we wouldn’t just demonstrate a prototype at City Hall, but roll them out across the city,” Tory said. The new bins were designed by Rehrig Pacific Company, an Atlanta, Georgia-based firm that took on a unique challenge of not simple industrial design, but behavioural science, too. “It was really a question of studying raccoons, what they do, their capability and habits, and developing pro-
totypes and testing them,” said designer Derick Foster. “We developed seven different latches and variations before we found the right one.” The latch on the new bins is a marvel of ergonomic design. The handle to lock the bin sits on top of the lid and twists to open and close. But when the bin is inverted to 110 degrees, by a robotic arm on the side of a garbage truck, the latch automatically opens and the compost is dumped into the truck. The bins are rolling out in Scarborough over the coming weeks. Once that is finished, they will be delivered to homeowners in Etobicoke, then North York and finally Toronto/East York.

Share your ideas on how to make Toronto sustainable The City of Toronto, like many other cities in the world, has set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by the year 2050 to help reduce the most negative impact of climate change. Reaching this goal will require big changes in the
ways that we live, travel, work and consume goods and services. Locally, environmental advocacy group Green 13 (green13toronto.org), in conjunction with Project Neutral (projectneutral.org), is organizing an event, ‘Brainstorm
for a Sustainable City’ that will take place Tuesday, May 17 at West Toronto Baptist Church, 3049 Dundas St. W., at 7 p.m. The event is free. To register or more information visit http://bit. ly/1OcA6A6
