Family dynamics take centre stage in show, Maggie’s Getting Married MARIA TZAVARAS maria_tzavaras@yahoo.com The main goal of any wedding is to try and make it as memorable and happy as possible for the bride, groom, and their friends and family. However, in the Village Players’ final show of the season, Maggie’s Getting Married by Canadian funny man Norm Foster, we get a glimpse at some real feelings that prelude the big day, and they are not all joyous and rosy like we are always led to believe. Set entirely in the kitchen of the Duncan family home the night before Maggie Duncan’s (Emma Borsa) wedding to Russell (Mark Brombacher), everyone has gathered there after the rehearsal dinner for one last celebration before the big day. We first meet Maggie and her older sister Wanda (Loriel Medynski), who has come from out of town for the wedding, and they are catching up as sisters do. However, it’s clear the two could not be more different in personality, which has played a significant role in their pasts. While Maggie is smart, cute and reserved, Wanda is outgoing, witty and beautiful, and throughout their lives Maggie has always felt overshadowed by her sister’s big personality and sparkling looks. To enhance that fact, Wanda has stolen the few boyfriends Maggie ever had. Nonetheless, the two girls are close, despite Maggie half-jokingly telling Wanda that she does not want her to meet her groom, who is running late because of work. Joke or not, it is clear there is some hesitation among the optimism. With the party going on just outside the kitchen, we soon meet their mother Cass (Gloria Lambert), and their dad, Tom (Morris Jacobs), who are coming in and out to refresh drinks and food, and check in with their kids, who they notice are chatting. Eventually, the kitchen becomes the hub where everyone takes their turn having interactions, and

through different sets of conversations, we are privy to some funny and honest talks that reveal insights on how everyone is really feeling about the big day. Mom is thrilled about the upcoming union having practically set up the two, but she is not so thrilled about Axel (Dan Bowers), who she calls Wanda’s “boyfriend du jour,” an actor who is set to star in the adult version of Peter Pan. We hear Maggie’s feeling towards her sister about some of the hurts in their past, and dad Tom comes to give Maggie the “I can give you an out” talk, has she any reservations about marrying a guy she has only known for seven months. While weddings are about two people who are about to gain a life together, in reality, it also offers reflection to what some have lost and the changes that will occur for others. Tom and Cass reflect on their marriage, the realities of getting older, and the uncertainty that lies ahead. Amongst all the funny and deep conversation, the groom finally shows up, and to Wanda’s shock and

horror it is not the first time she has met Russell. This presents a situation that threatens to ruin Maggie’s happiness yet again at Wanda’s hand. This show contains some funny and witty dialogue which ranges from silly to shocking, touching and sentimental, and everything in between. It is a beautiful snapshot of family relationships and dynamics. Director David Eden does an amazing job choosing cast members who are not only talented but who each bring something individual to the show and the story. Rarely is there a cast which portrays characters that are equally likeable and entertaining. They all have some moments of funny interactions and great onstage chemistry. This show is the right balance of funny and realistic, with relatable characters and a realistic storyline.

Good-news Tory mayoralty will soon have to shift gears to talk austerity

A

t the start of the whirling vortex of chaos (otherwise known as the May meeting of Toronto council) next year’s budget seems very far off. It is not, of course. While council and the city deal with the ramifications of open-season on food trucks, a new city manager, the quest for a just taxi license and gender balance on the Toronto Transit Commission, the city’s 2016 budget looms large – larger than is typical, in fact, thanks to the odd way that council decided to balance the 2015 budget. This was in March, when council approved a 2.75 per cent property tax increase for homeowners, and filled a $60-million shortfall by effectively borrowing from the city’s own

david nickle the city capital financing capacity in future years. Services were generally sustained or even enhanced, taxpayers were mollified with a rateof-inflation increase, and the pain, Mayor John Tory promised, would come later. Tory also promised to let Toronto know in the coming weeks exactly how he would deal with the 2016 gap between what it costs to run the city as it stands, and the diminishing amount of money actually available to the city. Although Tory would not use the words, it all suggested that in 2016, Torontonians would be looking at some form of service cuts.

Given that, it’s understandable that Tory has not yet made good on that one promise, to explain how he’ll balance things. So far, the Tory mayoralty has been a good-news affair. His announcements generally aren’t about telling people what they can’t have, but what he will provide: improved traffic movement, jobs for underprivileged youth, technological innovation. Very soon, our mayor is going to have to start talking about more difficult things: initially, one suspects, strategies for cutting waste in the city’s administrative bureaucracy, but as the process carries on, cuts and fee increases that will impact the lives of constituents. Tory has so far avoided talking about fees very much, effectively ruling

out the operationally sensitive but politically difficult application of “revenue tools” such as road tolls and consumption taxes. Without a willingness to increase or enact those things, the city is left with only one option: austerity. The city doesn’t have a terrible record on measured austerity, but it doesn’t have a great one either. In general, Toronto residents seem to like their services and react with a certain amount of organized pique when they are threatened When the matter finally comes up, it will show even a rough-and-tumble council meeting such as this week’s for the honeymoon that it in fact is. Toronto City Council approves more relaxed rules for food trucks DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Pastrami, poutine and other street fare will be easier to get – and much easier to sell – from the side of trucks after Toronto council approved more relaxed rules for food trucks May 5. Council voted to approve

the new rules from the city’s Legislation Committee that will ease many of the restrictions that food truck operators say have been hampering their ability to do business, and restaurant owners had said were necessary to keep the mobile kitchens from driving them out of business.

Among the changes to the regulations: food trucks will now be able to set up in Green P street parking spots just 30 metres from the front doors of restaurants as opposed to the current 50-metre rule. As well, it will be possible to buy licenses for shorter periods than a full year – which given Toronto’s winters isn’t

practical for most food truck operators. Mayor John Tory touted the recommendations as a good compromise between the operators. “Does this pose some challenges? Of course,” he said. “Do we have a chance to look at it later and make the necessary changes? Yes.

What we’ve done here is to embrace and take advantage of positive change.” York West Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti disagreed, arguing that the new rules would make it easier for food trucks to block signage that not just restaurants but other retailers spent money on in order to draw in cus-

tomers. Tory pointed out that by that logic, it would make no sense to allow food trucks anywhere. The new rules will be in place May 14.

>>>from page 1 and people you love hurt.” By the third day following the quake, Cowe decided she wanted to do something to help the country that has played a huge role in her life for several years. Both she and her mother, Diana Brugos, have volunteered in Nepal. In fact, Brugos just returned from her third trip there where she works with several groups, but primarily a retail business, called ‘Local Women’s Handicrafts’. The business is operated by a young woman who refused her family’s arranged marriage and instead supports other marginalized women by giving them work creating handmade items. “I fell in love with the country, the people. They’re really warm, open and loving,” Brugos told The Villager from her Junction home. Brugos left the day before the earthquake and was in India when it hit. For three hours, Brugos had no idea whether her daughter was safe. Because there is still little aid on the ground in Katmandu, Cowe and some of her friends have been doing all they can to provide impromptu aid. Her Canadian bank account is accessible and so Cowe’s parents are raising funds to send to her, which their daughter spends on food, water filtration kits and other essentials and delivers it directly to the people. The owner of Local Women’s Handicrafts has turned her very modest factory into an aid depot. LadeeBee Supplies, at 3079 Dundas St. W., at Dundas Street West and Quebec Avenue, is hosting a fundraising event over Mother’s Day weekend, Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10, from noon to 5 p.m. There will be items for sale, a raffle, and an opportunity to donate directly. Already, neighbours, friends and co-workers have provided support. In just a matter of days, More than $3,690 has been raised.

Junction resident Audra Cowe, centre, helps treat a child in the Naya Bazaar neighbourhood of Kathmandu in the days after the Nepal earthquake. Children that Cowe used to babysit banded together to host lemonade stands and bake sales that raised more than $921. Thus far, $1,000 has gone to Prisoners Assistance Nepal, $500 has gone to Local Women’s Handicrafts and $500 to a family friend who has purchased food, water purification systems and other essentials to the residents of his village. “We’re still in the early stages of post disaster relief,” said Cowe, adding that people need the basic necessities of life: food, water and shelter. Yet, despite what the Napelese people have survived and the hardship they continue to endure, there is resilience. “So many people carry on with their religious traditions,” said Cowe, pointing out that it was Buddha’s birthday, May 4. “Something really horrible happened and they’re able to carrying on with their lives and know they can keep moving forward to live a normal life.”

PUBLIC MEETING NOTICE DAVENPORT COMMUNITY RAIL OVERPASS Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is working to transform the way the region moves by building a fast, convenient and integrated transit network across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). Metrolinx is moving forward with Regional Express Rail (RER), a program that will provide significant new travel choices on the GO Transit network across the region. WHAT WE ARE PLANNING Metrolinx is planning to build an elevated rail corridor that follows the current GO Transit route between Bloor Street West and Davenport Road. The Davenport Community Rail Overpass project is intended to eliminate the ‘Davenport Diamond’, one of the busiest train intersections in North America, where CP Rail freight trains and GO Transit passenger trains cross at a ground-level rail crossing. WHAT WE ARE DOING Metrolinx is in the early stages of assessing the environmental impacts of this transit project by completing an Environmental Assessment following the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP), as prescribed by Ontario Regulation 231/08 made under the Environmental Assessment Act. As part of the TPAP, we are beginning our engagement with our neighbours and stakeholders. COME AND MEET YOUR NEIGHBOURS Metrolinx randomly recruited 36 residents to participate on a Residents’ Reference Panel to work on behalf of their community to ensure that the Davenport Community Rail Overpass benefits the neighbourhood. The Panel invites you and your neighbours to be part of this process by engaging with Metrolinx and the Panel to learn more about the project, share your thoughts and to stay involved. Please join us: Date: Tuesday, May 12, 2015 Time: 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Location: Davenport Perth Neighbourhood Centre* 1900 Davenport Road Toronto, ON M6N 1B7 *This location is accessible. STAY CONNECTED All comments and feedback received will be documented and will help inform the TPAP process. This spring and summer, it will be home to the Pan Am Path Art Relay, running from May 16 to Aug. 15, moving a relay of art installations and events along the path. “It’s a roving, rolling

Future of the Davenport Diamond rail crossing to be discussed at meeting Metrolinx will hold a public meeting early next week to share its plan for separating the Davenport Diamond rail crossing. It’s already been reported Metrolinx will launch an Environmental Assessment (EA) in late summer for building an overpass to elevate GO Transit rail service over CP Rail freight train traffic which currently meets at the crossing. The meeting takes place Tuesday, May 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Davenport Perth Neighbourhood Centre. Breaking news: a public official was spotted riding the TTC. That may not seem newsworthy, particularly since the official in question is TTC CEO Andy Byford, who makes

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT regular use of the Better Way, doesn’t own a car and has never had a driver’s licence. But after a Reddit Toronto user spotted Byford on the subway speaking to riders last Friday – stopping even to pick up some trash off the subway floor – it was enough to spawn a message thread with dozens of comments praising the TTC’s top official. CRITICIZED FOR WINTER ROAD CARE wMINISTRY

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation promised swift changes following a report by the auditor general critical of its decision to contract out winter maintenance to the private sector. Released last week, Bonnie Lysyk’s report concludes contracting out work to the private sector led to reduced

expenses for the Ministry – but at the cost of a steady decline in maintenance standards. at UNION SUBWAY nearly done wplatform

The TTC announced it will complete construction of the second subway platform at Union Station in coming weeks. The station was closed again last weekend as work crews completed final touches to the new Yonge line platform ahead of the Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. It will be the last time the station is closed before the Games begin in July due to the construction. The platform actually opened last year, but in an unfinished state. Its final design includes an immense “art wall”. Rahul Gupta is The Villager’s transit reporter. His column appears every Thursday. Find him on Twitter: @TOinTRANSIT
