Simply put – family caregivers need support. That’s the reason for the upcoming The Caregiver Show, a free event May 14 at the Direct Energy Centre. Produced by Metroland Media Toronto and conceived in partnership with Downsizing Divas, the show will provide a relaxing day for caregivers, giving them access to caregiving resources, providing the opportunity to meet other caregivers in similar circumstances, and to receive a little pampering. Some eight million Canadians are family caregivers. A caregiver is anyone who provides care to a loved one or friend with acute, chronic problem or aging issues. A caregiver can be a wife, husband, sister, brother, daughter, son, uncle, aunt, mother, father, grandchild or caring neighbour. “We do hope you take advantage and attend this show,” said Marg Middleton, general manager of Metroland Media Toronto. “We want to provide >>>THE, page 14

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com As Paul Poce, head coach of the Swansea-based Toronto Olympic Club, clicked open the email notifying him of his impending induction into Athletics Canada Hall of Fame, he immediately thought: “Well, well, well, they remembered me.” An accomplished athlete in his own right, the former championship-runnerturned-Olympic-runningcoach helped form the Toronto Olympic Club in 1954. Winning many races himself, including the Canadian Cross Country Championships, Poce went on to coach hundreds of athletes, including 13 Olympians and more than 30 others who represented Canada on the international stage. “I like being recognized, like everyone else,” he said modestly on the phone from his Mississauga home. Poce will be inducted into the hall of fame during an awards ceremony that will coincide with the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Moncton, New Brunswick, June 27 to 29. The awards gala will take place Thursday, June 26 at the Delta Beauséjour, which will include a reception, induction banquet and dinner. No longer able to run because of an artificial hip and some arthritis, Poce says he is confined to “a brisk walk.” Regardless, he is still heavily involved with the Toronto Olympic Club as its head coach and says he coaches three times a week at the Swansea Community Recreation Centre. Athletically inclined his entire life, Poce recalls boxing – on the “quasi” amateur circuit, playing basketball and swimming as a teen at the Toronto West End College St. YMCA Centre. He joined the Canadian Air Force during the last two years of the Second World War. While in training, he bunked with a Bermudian

runner. “While I was boxing, he’d take me out for road work,” Poce said. After winning the middleweight championship of a boxing tournament, Poce learned his friend had won $100 betting on his match. eye opener “While I’m getting my brain scrambled, my friend’s winning a hundred bucks,” he said. “I said, ‘I think I’m in the wrong sport.’” That’s when Poce took up running – and discovered he had a knack for it. Poce trained with the late Lloyd Percival, known as an “innovative and controversial” Canadian sports coach and fitness expert, as part of the North Toronto Track and Field Club, nicknamed the ‘Red Devils.’ In 1954, he and some friends founded the Toronto Olympic Club and “like a lot of people in this sport, fell into coaching.”

“I was getting to be close to 30 years of age. At that time, you didn’t progress after 30, you were put out to pasture,” he said. Poce has coached runners in the 800-metre, 1,500-metre, 3,000-metre, 5,000-metre, 10,000-metre, half-marathon and marathon; he has been named as coach to several international teams, including five Olympic games: 1972 and 1976 as the endurance event coach, 1980 (boycott), 1984 (as an alternate) and 1992 as head coach. He also represented Canada as part of the coaching staff at six Commonwealth Games, four Pan American Games, five World Cross Country Championships, two World Championships to name a few. Coaching, he says, is something he’s grown into. It’s working with people that he especially enjoys. For more information about the Athletics Canada Hall of Fame, visit www.halloffame. athletics.ca

Hundreds of Nestlé workers hit the picket lines Negotiations between union and management resumed Wednesday LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Negotiations resumed Wednesday morning between Nestlé Canada employees and the company after more than 360 workers went on strike on the weekend at the Dundas Street West and Lansdowne Avenue-area chocolate factory. After extensive contract discussions in recent weeks, Unifor, the union representing production workers at the 72 Sterling Rd. manufacturing plant elected to strike, confirmed Catherine O’Brien, Nestlé Canada’s VP of corporate affairs on Wednesday. “We regret that we were not able to reach a deal and are hopeful we will be able to resume bargaining,” O’Brien said in a statement to The Villager. “We value our employees and our goal is to have our employ-

ees back at work.” The employees, who make a variety of Nestle chocolate bars, including Kit Kat and Aero, have been in a legal strike position as of midnight, Saturday, May 3. However, members of the bargaining committee continued negotiations with Nestlé until late Sunday night, the union said. As many as 365 workers are currently on strike after negotiations with Nestlé broke down. Union members were particularly concerned about securing and improving their defined benefit pension plan. “The company first came to the table with the goal of eliminating the defined benefit pension plan altogether, which was a complete non-starter for us,” said chairperson Said Duale in a statement. “They then suggested a formula

Workers from the Nestlé chocolate factory at 72 Sterling Rd. walked off the job Saturday night, in a dispute with the company over pensions and wages.

that would allow most workers to keep the current pension plan, but replace it with a defined contribu-

tion plan for 25 per cent of current employees and all future employees. For workers who have not had

an increase to their pension in four years, this is unreasonable.” According to Unifor, Nestlé has taken the position that there will be no other improvements – to wages or benefits – with this offer. “We’re talking about the biggest food and beverage manufacturer in the world, and they’re saying they can’t afford a secure retirement for their dedicated employees,” stated Paul Shiels, president of Unifor Local 252. “And on top of that we’re told to accept a three-year wage freeze.” Serving more than 305,000 workers across the country, Unifor represents approximately 88,000 workers in manufacturing, 9,600 of whom work in the food and beverage industry. Unifor was formed Labour Day weekend last year when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged.

There are both Bloor West Village and Etobicoke-area contenders for the Stepping Stone Classical Music Competition, which takes place in Toronto later this month. The winners will perform Thursday, May 29 at 8 p.m. at the Mazzoleni Concert Hall. From May 21 to 29, these musicians will compete in Toronto for a grand prize of $10,000, offered by Canimex, major sponsor of the 2014 CMC and Stepping Stone. The grand prize winner will also receive a threeweek residency at the Banff Centre and a chance to perform with the Orchestre symphonique de Québec at the competition’s July 5 gala concert in Quebec City. A veritable “Olympics of classical music,” the biennial Stepping Stone challenges artists to win over a panel of judges by performing technically complex and emotionally nuanced pieces of music with

flawless precision and expressiveness. The candidates were chosen by a blind jury from a pool of close to 120 applicants, who collectively represent the cream of the crop of Canada’s top competition winners and early-career professionals. Soprano Adanya Dunn, who attended the Etobicoke School for the Arts, graduated from the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto (U of T) with a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance with Honours. Dunn is in her final year of the Master of Music in Operatic Performance program at U of T. Bloor West Village pianist Talisa Blackman has performed with some of the top orchestras from North America and Russia. She has recently appeared as soloist with the Georgian Bay Symphony Orchestra with John Barnum in Owen Sound, the National Academy Orchestra in Hamilton, and the National Repertory Orchestra with Carl Topilow in Colorado, and will perform with the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra as its young artist in residence for the 2013/2014 season.

Norm Kelly’s handling of de-facto mayor’s job deserves much praise H

e won’t return your phone call personally. He doesn’t worry about his office budget. And he shows up early. Sometimes, Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly shows up very early. On Monday, he and Toronto CentreRosedale Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam hosted a 9 a.m. news conference, to do something else that Mayor Rob Ford would never do: invite 200 LGBT couples to get married, for free, at Toronto’s Casa Loma. Now that Mayor Ford has left city hall to look after his personal problems, Kelly is the de-facto mayor. The leave of absence funnels to Kelly the few powers left to Ford after council voted to isolate him in November. Kelly represents Toronto at official functions, acts as the head of the government in

david nickle the city

emergency and otherwise. And he continues in his role of attempting to elevate the discussion at city hall, and restore dignity to the institution – a role in which Kelly has excelled. I take the time to point this out, because the long-time Scarborough councillor really deserves the shout-out. These past 12 months have seen the city dragged through the mud – from the moment that crack video started making the rounds, or maybe a short while before, when gossip about Mayor Ford’s substance troubles found their way from backrooms to front pages. Kelly stepped into the role of deputy mayor in

the midst of it, taking over from Doug Holyday after he made his way to Queen’s Park. Kelly did so gamely – knowing there was trouble with the mayor, and hoping to provide quiet counsel to the mayor and his brother as the office unravelled. It was a thankless job, but Kelly had the good grace to appear grateful for it. And when council put him in the sort-of-top-job, he managed to retain some grace even as he was clearly delighted to oblige. He’s spent the past five months taking council’s pulse, nudging things along on issues he cares about, but otherwise taking a quesera-sera approach to matters of municipal policy. You would never run an election campaign promising to be a mayor like Kelly. But it is actually a good lesson for future mayors,

as they think about how to manage this city. Kelly’s geniality has led to a pretty productive council. It passed a decent budget, made a tough call on the future of the Billy Bishop Airport, and generally conducted its business as well as one might hope. The next mayor might find him/herself needing some of Kelly’s low-key mojo. Because given the city’s financial constraints, it will be difficult to make a mark with more than one or two big, city-building projects and still manage the books. The virtues of modesty, inclusiveness and compromise might be the main of what our future leaders require.

Merchants’ Wharf wins naming contest The results are in, and the name of a new waterfront street is Merchants’ Wharf. The “main street” for the emerging East Bayfront residential development located on the water’s edge and connecting to Queen’s Quay, Merchants’ Wharf was one of 700 suggestions for a naming contest organized by Waterfront Toronto. Submitted by Daniel Thompson, the name received nearly 40 per cent of some 2,200 votes cast during the online contest which ended May 1. Runners up included Kanadario Way – Iroquois for “sparkling” water – and Water Street. The naming choice must still be approved by Toronto-East York community council, which is expected to take place in June. rentals at go train stations wzipcar

Last week the TTC board heard a presentation on the project which has concerned some local residents worried about worsening road congestion and an uptick in diesel emissions in the area caused by increased bus traffic. It would take three years to build the bus garage, with construction expected to begin in 2016. A public open house on the project is scheduled for Wednesday, May 14 at Kennedy Public School, located at 20 Elmfield Cres., from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. For additional information contact TTC Community Liaison Lito Romano at lito. romano@ttc.ca or 416-3978699.

Residents voice concerns over end of mail home delivery MP Peggy Nash, Councillor Sarah Doucette believe there are better alternatives ALI RAZA contactus@insidetoronto.com According to Parkdale–High Park MP Peggy Nash, no developed country in the world has ceased operations of its home postal services. But now, Canada is on its way to being the first to do so. A community meeting took place on May 3 in response to the plan by Canada Post to terminate home delivery. Nash hosted the meeting alongside Ward 13 Councillor Sarah Doucette. Canadian Union of Postal

Workers’ 4th Vice President John Slattery also attended. Community members met at Runnymede United Church for the meeting to share their thoughts and concerns about the plan. In an interview with Nash and Doucette this week, the politicians said public consultations are a must before these changes move ahead. “We believe there should be public consultations,” she said. “Let’s take a look at the extent of the problem, Canada Post says it’s losing money so let’s take a look at the problem and see what options we

have.” Canada Post’s decision to stop home delivery service prompted it to offer “super mailboxes”, communal mailboxes where residents could go to pick up their mail. But Nash said security concerns were raised about where these boxes would be located and what affect it would have on small business owners. Canada Post made the change due to low revenue and high expense of home deliveries. But Councillor Doucette argues there’s still money available.

“Maybe the home delivery portion of their organization isn’t making a profit,” she said. “But parcel delivery is making a profit because of many people ordering items on the Internet.” Doucette added that reduced home delivery would be a better alternative, saying that “the community would rather see mail delivery reduced two to three days a week to your front door.” Other concerns from seniors and people with disabilities pointed to the mobility challenges faced when

having to pick up mail from a “super mailbox,” Nash said. Safety concerns during the night and during cold weather were also addressed. According to the politician, many residents were concerned about having to visit the super mailboxes multiple times a week to stay on top of time-sensitive mail. “Where could these things go?” Doucette said. “You can’t just put them anywhere, you need lighting, proper garbage disposal. It has to be in a secure place to avoid a break-in and theft of mail.”

Petition kits were offered allowing community members to raise awareness through door-to-door canvassing. The aim is to inform the community about Canada Post’s action so that discussion can be sparked. “The first thing is to let people know what’s happening, the second thing is to encourage people to voice their opinion,” Nash said. Home delivery with Canada Post will end in the fall of 2014. Dates for downtown Toronto and surrounding areas have not been announced.

StART helps tackle unsolicited graffiti problems >>>from page 1 Charlie boasts his own place in the mural. “Josie was the brains behind everything,” Wong said. “She had the idea and wanted it to come to life so she contacted me.” Pa r k d a l e - H i g h Pa r k Councillor Sarah Doucette said she was eager to show the mural to the Friends of High Park board during the

official unveiling on Howard Park Avenue on April 30. “I think it’s stunning,” she said. Wong had free reign in terms of what he wanted the mural to look like. The only stipulation was that Charlie had to be incorporated. The mural was made possible with support from the StART Support Mural Program, a City of Toronto

graffiti management plan that assists private residential and commercial property owners experiencing repeated graffiti vandalism problems. Through the program, the city will provide the materials for the creation of art murals and graffiti art to help deter repeated graffiti vandalism on properties whose walls face city streets. The zoo mural is the first

one for the StART program, according to project leader Kristina Hausmanis. Candito admitted the Master Mechanic building did suffer from the odd graffiti tagging. On hand at the unveiling was fellow artist Tina Gonzalez, who helped with the mural. For more details, visit www. facebook.com/magicfinngawong

Toronto police, mental health workers team up to improve crisis intervention Mobile Crisis Intervention Teams (MCITs) to expand LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The Toronto Police Service alongside its health sector partners announced additional dedicated support and resources to those in the city who suffer emotional health crises. The announcement at Toronto police headquarters coincided with the first day of the Canadian Mental Health Association’s annual Mental Health Week. Deputy Chief Mike Federico said the North York community, protected by 32 and 33 divisions, will now be served by a Mobile Crisis Intervention Team (MCIT) – bringing the total number of these teams in Toronto to seven. The goal is to establish enough MCITs to serve Toronto in its entirety, all 17 Toronto police divisions this year, added Federico during his media address at police headquarters, Monday. MCITs are comprised of a mental health nurse and police officer specially trained in crisis intervention. The team’s mission is to assess the person in distress, whom primary emergency responders were called to deal with, diffuse the crisis and set up further treatment if necessary. They arrive separately to provide support to primary emergency crews. “The mental health nurse is associated with the psychiatric facilities that serve the client in the community. So, I’m always very excited and

St. Joe’s gets second MCIT Locally, this announcement means St. Joseph’s Health Centre is getting a second MCIT later this month to cover police divisions 11, 14 and now 22, reaching across its catchment area and neighbourhoods from west Etobicoke to Parkdale. “The more teams that are out there being able to respond to these crisis calls the better – this is a very important investment in local health care services,” said Gwen Yorston, manager of outpatient Mental Health Services, in a statement. With an additional MCIT, St. Joe’s will have two teams on the road Monday to Thursday from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., and one team covering weekends. proud to announce an expansion in that partnership,” Federico said. “The partnership now includes North York General Hospital and now serves 32 and 33 divisions. And, while that expansion has resulted in the introduction of a new team into our community, we are working with our existing hospital partners St. Joseph’s, St. Mike’s, Humber River and Scarborough General to expand the territory of existing teams so that in 2014, all areas of the City of Toronto will be served by the Mobile Crisis Intervention Teams.” MCITs respond to crisis calls from those thinking of suicide or harming them-

selves or those demonstrating distorted or psychotic thinking, anxiety and overwhelming depression. “The little we know from the published literature and from what we’ve learned in the last year and a half confirm that the MCITs are a very important component of a crisis response system,” said Dr. Vicky Stergiopoulos, psychiatrist-in-chief at St. Michael’s Hospital. She pointed to a recent report by the Centre for Research on Inner City Health of St. Michael’s Hospital, which reveals a partnership between police and a mental health nurse positively effects those affected by a mental health crisis. MCITs are helping to respond to more people in an emotional crisis; they are helping to keep care in the community while preventing unnecessary admission to the emergency department and justice system and those in crisis are provided compassionate care and are given a say in their own care. Typically, police officers are the first responders to mental health emergencies in a community. Toronto Police Service responds to about 20,000 calls related to a mental health crisis a year, Federico said. In about 8,500 of those cases, it makes an arrest, he added. “Every Toronto police officer is trained to deal with people in crisis,” the deputy chief said.
