to get a preview of the transit planning agency’s plans for eliminating the Davenport Diamond rail crossing by building an estimated 8.5 metre high bridge over it to run GO Trains service on the Barrie line without interference form CP freight train traffic. But based on the feedback it appeared most of the approximately 100 people in attendance at the Davenport Perth Community Centre were critical of the project. “This is great for someone who lives in Barrie, but we’re not going to gain anything from this,” said John M., a resident of >>>MPP, page 8

Junction runner, 80, places first at marathon Takes first place in her age category at Sporting Life race LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Junction resident Shirley Rapson was one of the approximately 27,000 runners who took part in Sunday’s Sporting Life 10K, however, she stood out from the crowd by not only winning a gold medal in her age category, but also for having just turned 80. “I’m pretty excited about it,” Rapson told The Villager about her accomplishment. An avid runner, Rapson had just returned from getting her driver’s license renewed, before sharing her story on

Tuesday, May 12. Rapson said she is inspired by her two sons, one of whom has run the Boston Marathon twice. “I’ve lived with him since my husband died. We go to the Running Room on Bloor,” she said. Rapson also trains on her own running at least three times a week and goes to fitness classes at the Annette Recreation Centre. Years ago, it was running that prompted her to quit smoking, a habit, she says she’s ashamed to admit she had. “I couldn’t even go up a flight of stairs without getting winded,” Rapson recalled. At 49 years of age, she competed in her first triathlon. She completed her first halfmarathon at 75. “I love what it’s done for me, for my quality of life,” Rapson said of running. She said she loves the thrill and excitement of all the people around her on race day. “It’s great fun,” she said.

Plus, the Sporting Life 10K is for a good cause, she added. Funds raised go towards Camp Ooch, for children with cancer. Camp Oochigeas is a privately funded, volunteerbased organization that provides kids with and affected by childhood cancer “with unique opportunities for growth through challenging, fun, enriching and magical experiences.” “I ran for my sister-inlaw’s granddaughter who beat Leukemia when she was four,” Rapson said. In 2012, Rapson got a pacemaker, which slowed her down slightly. She started back at running, competing in a 5K and then a 10K. A halfmarathon is her goal. “It’s good to have something on the horizon that you’re not quite ready for. It inspires you to train,” Rapson said. “An active lifestyle is a happier one. I’m thankful I can still do this.”

glorious ...while it lasted short visit: The cherry blossoms at High Park have come and gone, with their peak bloom happening at the end of last week into the weekend. However, the rain we had knocked most of the petals to the ground. For anyone who recalls the blossoms being more pink, the High Park Nature Centre says cherry blossoms are mostly white with a little bit of pink in the middle. Depending on the light conditions, they can appear more white or more pink. Last year, during peak bloom, the weather was hazy and cloudy so the blooms appeared pink. This year, it’s been bright and sunny so the flowers appear more white.

T

oronto has a well-deserved reputation for its diverse offering of arts and cultural festivals. These are events that showcase a wide range of talents, skills and backgrounds – and they provide an important economic boost as well. The city’s Cultural Hotspot program, in its second year, is a welcome addition to Toronto’s cultural programming that gives a specific area of the city an increased profile. This year, the spotlight is on centralsouth Etobicoke and the artistic, cultural and heritage events taking place in that community from now through October. The concept is straight-forward enough: use a series of signature community projects to inspire residents and visitors to discover the area’s arts, culture, food, businesses, heritage and more. our view This year, examples of events include the Dancing in the Third performance and Lakeshore Spotlight on Act Mardi Gras as well as community culture good events related to the upcoming Pan Am Games. for all of us Benefits of this kind of focused program include an increased profile as well as greater co-ordination of multiple events – for diversity of interested participants and to help events that may otherwise struggle to get exposure. For residents of the neighbourhoods, the program is an opportunity to forge a greater connection to their community and for folks who live in other parts of the city, it’s an opportunity to glean a greater understanding of Toronto’s diverse communities. Last year, the Cultural Hotspot program was in the neighbourhoods of south Scarborough, with signature projects such as the Taste of Lawrence, Guild Alive with Culture and the Port Union Waterfront Festival. We hope the program’s continuation inspires new arts and cultural endeavours and helps develop a civic reputation as a global arts and cultural centre. Change is a reality in this city. Toronto’s population is growing and is becoming increasingly diverse. As the city continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how younger generations reshape the city’s cultural identity based on the more global influences of today. Giving our communities an opportunity for greater exposure from an increased breadth of arts and culture can only enhance that.

Doug Ford keeps limelight on family while Rob recovers from surgery

T

here was good news for the Ford family at Mount Sinai Hospital this week: Rob Ford, father, son, husband, city councillor and former mayor came through a difficult surgery as well as can be expected. Really, this is not big news for the city – except of course it is. Rob Ford has become a gravitational singularity for Toronto municipal news. Reporters across town were on tenterhooks, waiting to find out how things went for the councillor for Ward 2 and his eightmonth battle with cancer. Ford’s affable executive assistant Dan Jacobs took the point on Monday, providing regular updates as to the progress of the 10-hour surgery, and then on Tuesday with details of his boss’ recovery.

david nickle the city As I write this, it looks pretty good. City councillors have had health challenges before, but rarely have their issues gathered such attention. Rob Ford will be off work for four months. Ward 44 Councillor Ron Moeser was off work for much longer than that, dealing with the complications from surgery on his ankle during the last term. But few noticed. Of course, Moeser is no Rob Ford. In many respects, Moeser ought not mind that he’s not: Ford’s fame comes in part from his mayoralty, but in larger part for his sins. Thanks to Ford’s eventually admitted drug and alcohol abuse

issues, and the behaviour that surrounded it, he and his family became central figures in the story of Toronto over the past four years. And they are still in it. In the next four months, Ford’s brother Doug – who last term was Ford’s replacement in Ward 2, political wing-man and eventually replacement in his mayoral re-election bid – will be back on the job, as a volunteer in the Ward 2 office. Again, under ordinary circumstances this is no big deal. Lots of councillors put their families to work either in their offices as volunteers or on the ground in the ward. Doug won’t be back on council, won’t be shaping policy, probably won’t even be in the office that much. He’ll just be helping out.

Except, of course, it won’t be that simple. If Doug Ford doesn’t insert himself into political debates and personality politics, then we in the media will pull him on stage. Rob has made it clear as his health improves, so too does the prospect that he’ll be making a play for a second term as mayor in 2018, and a part of the next four months will be an exercise in making certain that the Ford name remains in the public eye. Doug, who last term took to scrums like the proverbial duck to water, will be doing his best to make sure our gaze doesn’t falter. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. MPP defends bridge, saying it will make the train lines more efficient >>>from page 1 of Paton Avenue who did not provide his last name. “I’m willing to make sacrifices for the community, but give me something too.” Sam Barbieri said he was concerned by the scale of the bridge which Metrolinx is proposing to build from Bloor Street in the south to just north of Davenport Road. The Wallace Avenue resident was disappointed Metrolinx has already ruled out building an underpass to bury the GO tracks below CP freight train traffic due to a variety of concerns including cost and length and impact of construction. “It sounds like it’s a done deal, we have no real input,” said Barbieri following the meeting. “We’d like to see all the options on getting rid of the Diamond, not just the overpass.” Du r i n g t h e m e e t i n g , Barbieri demanded local MPP Cristina Martins, also in attendance, intervene to stop the project, and received a sustained round of applause. But Martins, a Liberal, stuck to her government’s record on transit. She said the bridge would significantly benefit GO service on Barrie by no longer having to compete with CP trains for rail space. “We can’t have (the Barrie line) going as frequent as we want if we have to keep stopping the trains to allow the CP trains to go,” Martins said. That led to a few vocal residents wondering if her allegiances lay more with suburban GO riders than her local constituents Local city councillor Ana Bailão struck a more cautious tone compared to Martins, saying city staff including chief planner Jennifer Keesmaat would keep track of the EA process. Bailão, who also promised the city will continue to push Metrolinx to add a

Metrolinx is considering the merits of building a bridge at the Davenport Diamond rail crossing to separate the GO Transit tracks for the Barrie Line from those owned by CP Rail.

I want us as a community to have the arguments and information to make a sensible decision for our area. (The overpass) will have an impact on our community for the next hundred years. – Councillor Ana Bailão

new GO stop at Bloor Street west of Lansdowne Avenue, said she would hold her own public consultations in order to inform residents of Metrolinx’s plans. “I want us as a community to have the arguments and information to make a sensible decision for our area,” Bailão said. “(The overpass) will have an impact on our community for the next hundred years.” Metrolinx intends to launch a transit projectoriented Environmental Assessment (EA) study for the overpass project in September which will take

six months to complete and approve, followed by a final review from the province. If the project is approved, construction of the bridge could begin by 2019. Even before the EA has begun, Metrolinx has organized a 36-member advisory panel entirely made up of local residents which will meet regularly until June to come up with recommendations for improving publicly owned rail land which will become free once the Davenport overpass is built. Frances Kong, one of the panel’s members, said she was happy to hear from her fellow residents even if the comments were largely unfavourable towards building an overpass. “In the short-term, there’s a negative impact with construction and the noise and dust caused by it,” she said. “But in the long-term, the bridge will benefit our community.”

Revue renovations reveal west-end theatre’s past Century-old canvases and Douglas Fir panelling undergoing restorative work LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com In the midst of renovations made possible by an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant, original centuryold wall canvases were recently uncovered at the Revue Cinema. The canvases, Revue Film Society

chair Mark Ellwood told The Villager, were covered by ducts. With help from a flashlight beam, just a peak of the panels was possible. “As we pulled back these ducts, more and more was revealed,” Ellwood said. “The building has changed so much – these have got to be original.”

Beyond what the $125,300 grant covered, the Revue Film Society decided to uncover a section of the theatre that had been blocked by old, cold-water air conditioning ducts. They had not been used for several years and were taking up space in the lobby. Behind them, original Douglas Fir wainscoting

NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING #1 CALEDONIA GO STATION TRANSIT PROJECT ASSESSMENT PROCESS Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is working to transform the way the region moves by building a fast, convenient and integrated transit network across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). Metrolinx is moving forward with Regional Express Rail (RER), a program that will provide significant new travel choices on the GO Transit network across the region. THE PROJECT Metrolinx is evaluating the development of a future GO Station on the Barrie line through the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP). The proposed Caledonia GO station will be integrated with the future Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) station at Eglinton Avenue West and Croham Road, adding regional connectivity to the Crosstown and the Toronto Transit Commission bus network. Providing these connections will also support service capacity improvement plans for RER.

revealed itself. “The middle sections of the wainscoting are painted canvas panels. Most are in good shape, but cleaning, touching up, repair and new paint on unpainted sections needs to be done,” Ellwood said. And so, the film society has hired a professional paint conservator, Tessa Kline, who is working on bringing the panels back to life. She began the process May 6 and is expect to continue into this week. “I’m just so excited we’re revealing a part of the history of this building,” Ellwood said. “This building has changed so much over the years.” The aim is to complete the restoration work in time for the Revue’s spring gala fundraiser, which takes place Saturday, May 23. The funds raised will go towards this and additional renovations, restorations and ongoing programs not covered by the Trillium grant. The Revue is operated by a volunteer board of neighbours and staff, which provides affordable entertain-

ment in the neighbourhood. The renovations began in November and include boosting the stage and lobby lighting, rebuilding the theatre doors, replacing the auditorium floors, improving the washrooms, revamping the concession stand and outside ticket booth. “The Trillium grant took us only so far. We’re fundraising to continue this work,” Ellwood said. The gala spring fundraiser is a tribute to the 1920s featuring the Wintergarden Orchestra, an 11-piece jazz ensemble. Tickets are $100 each. They include a live orchestra performance, films, canapes, Scotch tasting and champagne as well as two rare vintage short films about Toronto, ‘Glimpses of Toronto’ and ‘Canada’s Queen City.’ As a bonus, every guest will receive a ‘Revue Bronze Annual Membership’ so they can enjoy the newly renovated theatre for the entire year.

THE PROCESS Metrolinx will assess the environmental impacts of this transit project by undertaking an Environmental Assessment following the TPAP, as prescribed by Ontario Regulation 231/08 made under the Environmental Assessment Act. As part of the TPAP, an Environmental Project Report is being prepared. Your participation is an important part of this process and we welcome your input. How to Select Your Home Improvement Contractor The Certified Contractors Network (CCN) is an independent, North American organization focused on increasing the professionalism in the contacting industry, as well educating homeowners on how to select a professional contractor. CCN states that “the critical factor in a successful contracting project is selecting the right contractor”. With the multitude of home renovation shows now on television, home owners are learning that not all renovations go as they had hoped. Most dissatisfied construction project victims limit their investigation focus to “How much will it cost?” even though studies clearly show that most dissatisfaction involves the lower bid contractors.

The CCN suggests selecting a contractor that can show you in writing all of the following criteria: • Has a permanent place of business and is licensed. • Has a minimum of $2,000,000 in liability insurance and complete worker’s compensation coverage (WSIB). Homeowners may be liable for uninsured contractors. • Staff are trained and certified by the manufacturer. • Installs products according to all of the manufacturer’s specifications to validate the product warranty.

Residents concerned about precedent that could be set in moving rental building >>>from page 1 West. The settlement would see 10 rental replacement units, necessitated by the proposed demolition of a vacant 10-unit affordable apartment building at 2800 Bloor in The Kingsway, incorporated into a ninestorey condo proposed to be built at Bloor and Runnymede Road. Pa r k d a l e - H i g h Pa r k Councillor Sarah Doucette reported the developer has agreed to the 10 rental replacement units. The units’ size remains a point of confidential negotiations, she said. “We were hoping it could have led to a settlement we could share with you tonight. But we’re not quite there yet,” Doucette explained to residents. Doucette stressed the only reason she agreed to rental replacement is because no residents are being moved. The existing building in The Kingsway is vacant. Doucette emphasized she and her residents are in favour of settlements, not protracted and expensive Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) battles. “My residents just attended an OMB hearing that cost them $40,000, and another one before that,” she said. “We don’t want to do that. We want negotiations. We want settlements.” The hope, Doucette said, is a settlement will be reached before the OMB pre-hearing scheduled for May 29. “We’re really, really hoping we can come back with a settlement and go to the OMB pre-hearing and hopefully, put these two to bed,” she said. City planners typically do not support rental replacement at another location. Neil Cresswell, director of community planning with Etobicoke York district, explained city planners’ concerns allowing rental replacements off-site would result in countless building knockdowns.

New ownership at West Toronto Kia Change is in the air at West Toronto Kia. With the warm weather, comes new ownership and a warm approach to sales at the dealership. Dealer principal Lief Sorensen and his wife Emily Sorensen, financial controller at the dealership, moved from Alberta to take over West Toronto Kia in March. They have big plans to make the dealership the best it can be. Lief brings a lifetime of experience at every level of the automotive industry to West Toronto Kia. He worked his way up the chain, from changing oil as a teenager at a dealership in Medicine Hat, Alta., to service manager at a General Motors dealership in Calgary, to sales manager at a number of luxury dealerships and finally made the decision to move across the country to West Toronto Kia. The couple and their son are settling into their new roles and community with ease, enjoying the beautiful city, friendly neighbours and variety of cuisine. “I

always say, in Alberta they know how to cook a great steak, but the rest of the cuisine is miles behind Toronto,” says Lief. Along with a change in ownership comes a change in sales approach. The small, family-owned dealership is committing to giving the best experience to customers with a low-pressure sales approach. “With my luxury background I’m looking to bring a new sales format to West Toronto Kia that’s a little more customer focused,” says Lief. “Instead of commissioned sales representatives, we have product demonstrators operating in our showroom, showcasing the features and benefits that Kia has to offer.” Only after a client has been satisfied with the model they are considering do they speak with the sales manager to decide on the offer, whether to finance or lease and when to pick it up. In the service department,

customers will find the same hands-on approach they’re used to; long-time service manager John knows most of his customers on a first-name basis. It’s not just the close relationships West Toronto Kia is known for, it’s also the efficiency. The dealership boast minimal wait times for appointments and accommodates to emergencies as needed. The four technicians regularly update their skills with in-class training at the Kia head office and online classes, to stay ahead of the curve with the latest technology in Kia vehicles.
