Baby Point residents acknowledge ‘hollow’ victory after parcel of land goes up for sale

Nearby residents are acknowledging a “hollow” victory upon learning last week that the property at 66 Baby Point Rd. is on the market after its owner sought permission from the city to build a “mega mansion,” despite neighbours’ opposition. “The rumour mill started a couple of weeks ago,” neighbour David Ceolin said on Monday, May 13. “I ran into an agent outside the lot. We saw the sign go up on Friday.” For years the community fought tooth and nail to stop Lorne Bozinoff and his wife from demolishing the heritage cottage and building an almost 6,000 square foot house in its place. “I think the community feels it was worth it to stand up for the neighbourhood. It must have had some impact because now the lot’s for sale,” Ceolin said. The original 1920’s Arts and Craft cottage was demolished in November 2010, seven months after Toronto City Council granted its owners site plan approval making them eligible for a building permit. The couple planned to replace the historic Robert Home Smith-designed one-and-ahalf storey house to make room for a 5,800 sq-ft., three-storey detached dwelling. Bozinoff assured the community the new home would blend in with the existing character of the neighbourhood. “I don’t want the house to stick out like a sore thumb,” Bozinoff once said at a public meeting. “We’ve looked at a lot of the houses in the neighbourhood and captured some of their features.”

Repeated requests for comment went unanswered by The Villager’s press deadline. When a Committee of Adjustment granted the Bozinoffs “a minor variance” allowing them to build their new house mere metres from the sidewalk, area residents fought the decision at the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) and lost. The provincial body deemed the development “appropriate.” The property is currently listed for sale at $2,495,000. Area real estate agent Nutan Brown said the property had yet to receive any offers as of May 16. “I wish him all the best. I hope he’s successful in securing this price point, but I feel it’s a little ambitious,” said Brown. Looking for a silver lining, Ceolin said the community’s battle served

to heighten awareness about the potential for people coming into the area and making over the community. “I think we’re all sort of relieved, but still holding our breath. Here’s the legacy we’re left with. He levels one of the most beautiful houses on the circle and walks away,” said Ceolin, who added the property was purchased for $1.8 million. Kevin O’Doherty, an 11-year Baby Point resident, said he is feeling “somewhat ambivalent.” Tearing down the historic cottage has “left a gaping hole in the community.” “The process is such that if (a project) goes to the OMB and it’s within the Official Plan guidelines, it’ll get approved,” said O’Doherty. “The control is not in the hands of the taxpayer – it’s clearly in the hands

In Baby Point, according to Sue Fenwick, a resident of 11 years, it’s not about having the biggest or flashiest house. “It’s about the people. It’s a community with a heart,” she said. “I don’t like the disrespect that was shown to the community.” There is apprehension as to what will happen next, according to Dr. Robert Galway, who has lived in Baby Point for the past four decades. No matter what size structure is built, the streetscape will be altered, he said. “We need better protection from our elected government officials,” said Galway. “Everyone who got involved from the committee of adjustment to council to the OMB has let us down.” Efforts to stop the proposed development led Galway to create the Baby Point Heritage Foundation (BPHF), which is dedicated to preserving, protecting and increasing the knowledge and respect for the history as well as the architectural and cultural heritage of the Baby Point area. “The neighbourhood is now cognizant of what a great resource this neighbourhood that goes back 300 years is,” he said. The group is working towards a Heritage District designation. “We have submitted a formal application to the city,” said Galway. He is also in the midst of co-writing a book about the history of Baby Point. On Friday, the BPHF is hosting a special event and social to view the Rogers TV program, Structures, featuring Baby Point.

Etobicoke York Community Council voted Tuesday, May 14, in favour of setting the wheels in motion to possibly rename Lithuania Park to its original moniker “Oakmount Park.” Approximately two years ago, area residents first contacted ParkdaleHigh Park Councillor Sarah Doucette to inquire about what it would take to rename the park, which is bordered by Oakmount Road, Glenlake Avenue and Keele Street. Its name was Oakmount until 1973 when it was changed to Lithuania Park, said Doucette. According to city guidelines, a park cannot be renamed for 25 years and to change a name, community consultation must be conducted, she said. “I don’t want to offend the Lithuanian community,” Doucette told The Villager. “We’re only asking for consultation. I need to involve everyone in this – the consultation meeting won’t be held until after the summer because people go away. We’re probably looking at September.” Doucette’s office has not yet heard from the Lithuanian community. Les Avila, who lives across from Lithuania Park on Oakmount Road, has collected as many as 200 signatures in favour of renaming the park Oakmount. “The park was initially named Oakmount appropriately because it is right off Oakmount Road,” said Avila. “The community is not a Lithuanian community. “I’ve spearheaded the installation of park benches, the planting of hundreds of trees and improved the children’s playground. I take pride in my community,” said Avila, who’s lived on Oakmount Road for about 25 years. “We want our park back to its original historical name.”

hey’re big, they’re cute and they could be two of the greatest things to happen to our city in decades. They are Da Mao and Er Shun, the two giant pandas on loan from China that are now on display at the Toronto Zoo in northeast Scarborough for the next five years. In a word, they are ambassadors. Ambassadors from China. They can serve as ambassadors to bring your family and friends from afar to Toronto. Beyond the economic benefits of increased tourism that the pandas will bring, we can also use them as a chance to start feeling good about ourselves and our city. We certainly could use that opportunity given the devastatour view ing first-round NHL playoff loss the Toronto Maple Leafs suffered Zoo exhibit at the hands of the other bears – a welcome the Boston Bruins. Local residents and tourists opportunity alike will have lots of opportunities to see Da Mao and Er Shun in the special Giant Panda Experience exhibit built just for them. It officially opened to the public on Saturday. The first time the Toronto Zoo hosted a panda exhibit was back in 1985 when our panda guests were Qing Qing and Quan Quan. They only stayed three months that time and the zoo broke all previous attendance records during their visit. The world is a different place now, and so is Canada’s relationship with China, but what hasn’t changed in 25 years is the fact that our city and our zoo is now the focal point on national and international attention when it comes to giant pandas. Let’s bask in that. It opens doors for everyone in the city to welcome family and friends, be they from Oakville or the other side of the world, to come and see the pandas. And once our guests have arrived, we can also show them some of the other great things Toronto has to offer. In the case of a trip to zoo, a suggestion for another special place to visit in Toronto is the Rouge Park – literally right beside the Toronto Zoo. Time for Ford Nation to call it quits

he trouble with writing a weekly column that appears on Thursday, is that when a mayor finds himself in allegedly hideous and frankly filthy trouble on the previous Friday, it’s tough to find something new to say. So it is with Mayor Rob Ford, and revelation last Friday of the cell phone video that according to two respected journalists at the Toronto Star alleges to show our mayor smoking crack cocaine. Earlier in the cycle, I might have joined the chorus of every other columnist working in Toronto media, and said it was time for the mayor to resign. I’ll take a slightly different tack, and speak directly to Ford Nation. It might be time, Ford Nation, to call it quits. Regardless of what happens with the video, it has come time to face some facts.

david nickle the city The mayor, when you elected him, came with a certain amount of baggage including a 1999 impaired driving conviction in Florida. There was a certain amount of baggage that you were willing to forgive, because you are a forgiving bunch. Some commentators say, in fact, that Rob Ford’s foibles have been a part of his charm to Ford Nation: that it shows him to be a regular guy, a guy that sometimes screws up, and not one of the elites. no more forgiving It is time, Ford Nation, to give up on forgiveness – at least inasmuch as that forgiveness translates to continued fealty, and worse, identification. Because Rob Ford is not

like you. You do not leave important work meetings to coach football; you don’t court disaster by ignoring potential conflicts-ofinterest in your job. You don’t, as a rule, embarrass yourselves, your family and your community. You are stand-up people, and you don’t need to stand up for this. In giving up on forgiving our mayor, you need not give up on the agenda he ran on. There are other good fiscally-conservative politicians in the wings – many of whom have assisted in our mayor’s fulfillment of his agenda this term. In 2014, you will likely have the opportunity to support one or more of them to continue that agenda. Call this, Ford Nation, your moment of clarity.

Zoo will attract visitors to city To the editor: Re: ‘Tourist-friendly projects needed,’ The City, May 9. Toronto has already invested in a wonderful tourist attraction that is currently being overlooked by the politicians. The Toronto Zoo is one of the largest zoos in the world; promotes itself as Canada’s premiere zoo and has a reputation of being one of the top zoos in the world. In times past, the Toronto Zoo was a valued asset. We still have the opportunity to make our zoo into a major tourist attraction. Part of what is needed to do that is for the current crop of politicians to begin to believe in the zoo as something more than a line in the city’s budget. Mark Cullen adds bird watching to his outdoor exploits LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com It seems a natural fit that gardening guru Mark Cullen’s passion extends beyond his green thumb to bird watching. His enthusiasm began to grow for the hobby 12 years ago. “Through the garden, I became interested in watching birds in my backyard,” said the Stouffville resident out in High Park Tuesday, May 14. “When I met (Bird Studies Canada board member) David (Love), he helped elevate my interest in birding.” Love was first introduced to bird watching through his father-in-law, who was involved in the Canadian Audubon Association - now Bird Studies Canada – in 1963. “To get close to his daughter, I had to get to know birds,” quipped Love, who joined the board in the early 1980s. Cullen maintains nine birding stations in his backyard.

“Birds find the work of a gardener helpful even when that is not our primary intent,” he said. “Plants provide protection, nesting areas and of course natural sources of food for native birds.” As the 2013 Baillie Bird-a-

thon celebrity birder, Cullen, alongside Love, Bird Studies Canada (BSC) biologists Jody Allair and Emily Rondel, had spotted more than 75 species of birds in both Tommy Thompson Park and High Park by late Tuesday morning. They

had been at it since 6:15 a.m. They were raising awareness and funds for bird research and conservation. “Birding can be anything you want it to be. It can be as intense or as relaxing as people want. It’s the second

most popular recreational activity after gardening,” said Allair, a pair of binoculars or “bins,” as enthusiasts call them, around his neck. “We’re looking for a lot of migrants. With warmer, wetter temperatures more birds would be out.” There are approximately 320 species of birds in Ontario – 75 of those the group was able to spot, the majority within the first hour of their birding expedition. About 120 species is a good average for a bird-a-thon, said Allair. Allair, who comes from an “outdoorsy” family, says he first became interested in birds when he saw an American Kestrel, “an unbelievable” falcon, which led to an “obsession.” Love spends three hours a day and as many as six hours on the weekend watching birds on his property. “It’s very eye-opening. You start putting names to birds; it’s the perfect subject matter to get you looking at the natural world,” said Love.

“It makes a walk you do every day different.” Nat ure co n ser va ti on doesn’t just take place in the wilderness, but in cities too. “It’s hard to care for something if you don’t know anything about it,” said Rondel, a Bloor Street West and Jane Street-area resident. “(Birds) are the type of wild animal you can see so many of.” Bird watching provides a great excuse to get outside. A pair of binoculars and a field guide borrowed from the library is all that’s needed. Allair recommends getting out with a group of people, like the Toronto Field Naturalists. “It’s not a hobby you have to spend a lot of money on,” he said. On their walk in High Park, along Wendigo Creek, the group caught sight of a cardinal, a downy woodpecker, a chestnut sided warble, an American Robin and mallard ducks.

Child, a family friend and neighbour, projected a photograph of Holly onto the wall and traced her face. “He’s really talented,” said Holly’s brother James JonesStonehouse, at the mural on Saturday.

For 10 years, the mural has remained untouched by graffiti. Jones-Stonehouse was 16 when his sister passed away. The mural was painted within a month of her death. When Jones-Stonehouse first set eyes on the work of art, he was “blown away.” Holly’s cousin, Kayla Jones, “fell in love with it.” She and Holly were close. The two would hang out during family dinners. In fact Kayla was at Holly’s house the night before Holly disappeared. “I told her, ‘be safe, I love

you,’” Kayla said. “I dream about her; I feel her around me.” Holly’s death has caused a pain so deep her mother says will never go away. “All we have left is to talk about her,” she said. “Now, 10 years later, I still would not be able to deal with this if it wasn’t for our family, our children especially. They keep us together knowing they share the same pain as we do.”

One in three Canadian kids are left on the side of the rink In Canada, one in three families cannot afford to enrol their children in organized sport or recreation activities because of financial barriers (Vision Critical 2011). Six years ago, Marlee Stein wanted to learn to skate, but she didn’t think it would be possible coming from a family of four kids and facing the struggles of a parent battling illness. Through a family support service in her community, Marlee and her family were introduced to Canadian Tire Jumpstart. The Jumpstart program supported Marlee’s skating lessons and skate Canada membership through financial assistance. A year after lacing up her skates for the first time, Marlee decided to turn her desire to skate into a goal – to one-day join the Canadian Olympic Figure Skating team. Through Jumpstart, Marlee is able to continue her skating lessons and is working to achieve this dream. “Jumpstart helped me get the lessons I needed to enter some very challenging provincial and national figure skating competitions in Canada,” says Marlee Stein.

As many as 19,000 people attend the annual Roncy Rocks event. “Every year, we’re surprised. Police believe a sweatshirt may be the key to solving the year-old shooting murder o f 2 7 - y e a r- o l d D e l a n o Coombs. The STG Entertainment sweater, which police say was worn by a gunman, was recovered in the days following the May 10, 2012 homicide. A DNA profile was obtained from the clothing. Det. Tam Bui said Coombs was lured to 4020 Dundas St. W., the townhouse complex where he grew up. “Delano was ambushed while in his vehicle, and then shot to death,” he told reporters during a Friday afternoon news conference at police headquarters. “We know that multiple offenders were involved and that mul-

tiple different firearms were used. This was a dangerous daytime shooting on a sunny Friday afternoon at the end of the school day.” The suspect who wore the sweater is black, about 20 years old, 5’10” tall with a slim build. He had braided hair at the time. STG Entertainment is a Toronto-based urban music production and promotion company. “We do not know the offender’s relationship to the company,” Bui said. “However, there’s nothing to suggest that that production company had anything to do with this murder...It’s promotional material that I understand from the Internet is sold at various venues. It could’ve come into the possession of the offender in a number of different ways.” Bui, of the homicide squad, said Coombs was

‘Bad blood’ leads to shooting death Sunday A man is dead; another charged with first-degree murder after a shooting in the Ossington Avenue and Harrison Street-area, Sunday, May 19. Taymoore Balbaa, a Junction resident and Ryerson University professor, joined forces with the Junction Commons Project, a group working to transform the old 11 Division police station into a community hub. Junction Commons cofounders Karin Kowalski and Kim Jackson, who were receptive to the collaboration of sorts. ‘COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT’ “ T h e Ju n c t i o n h a s a strong history of community engagement and organization,” Jackson said in a statement. “We want to have a conversation with our fellow residents to ensure that the level of community space and programming keeps pace with the rapid pace of growth the neighbourhood is experiencing.” Balbaa couldn’t be more pleased with his students’ work. “It’s been a great process,” he told The Villager. “It’s a good time to generate this discussion via these images.” The more research they did on the area, the more

Balbaa said his students became attached to the neighbourhood. “They dug the vibe of Dundas West,” he said. Julianna Kaiser proposed a food education centre and market because after interviewing a long list of area residents, that’s what she said people at the time wanted. “I think it was cool we were going into a community. It was an exciting initiative,” she said, adding it helped that Balbaa himself was so passionate about the neighbourhood. Balbaa has a personal interest in adaptive re-use of buildings. He says the challenge of the community hub project is convincing the greater community and politicians that it’s worthwhile to preserve the building. “It has an embodied energy – the bricks and

mortar have energy in them. There’s nothing more sustainable than using what we still have.” VACANT BUILDING The building has sat vacant for 18 months. It boasts 25,000 square feet, including the basement with a combination of big and small spaces. One of Balbaa’s students proposed turning the old cells into market stalls, he said. The Junction Commons Project task force is inspired by “local, communitydr iven initiatives” like the Wychwood Barns, the Wabash Building Society and the STOP Community Food Centre, among others.
