Dundas West eastbound bus stop to stay: Perks Westbound stop being removed for safety reasons T h e To r o n t o Tr a n s i t Commission ( TTC) has reversed its decision to remove both the eastbound and westbound bus stops at Dundas West and Jerome streets. R a t h e r t h a n re m ov e both stops, the eastbound stop – on the south side of the street – will remain as is, Parkdale-High Park Co u n c i l l o r G o rd Pe rk s announced in an email to constituents.

The westbound stop, situated on the north railway side of Dundas Street West at Jerome Street, will be removed because of safety concerns. “Throughout the years, there has been many concerns about the safety of people who use this stop as they often compete with the fast-moving traffic as they jaywalk across Dundas,” Perks wrote. In December, City of

Torontotransportation staff completed a review of this intersection after receiving a request for a crosswalk at this bus stop. When transportation staff review these types of requests, they consider factors such as pedestrian use, automobile use and distance to the nearest crossing, among other things, Perks said. “This intersection did not meet the criteria for a crosswalk.”

Pan Am Torch comes to town

Write us

G

et ready Toronto, the Pan Am Games Torch Relay is coming to town starting this Saturday. The flame was lit Monday in Mexico and is now on its way to Toronto. It splashes down with a special arrival ceremony celebration at Harbourfront featuring a float plane, canoe and a ‘mystery’ first torch runner. For more details on this weekend’s plans for the torch, see our feature story on page 18. The torch relay goes from May 30 to July 10, and will touch Canadian communities from the Atlantic to the Pacific. More than 130 communities will be visited during the 41-day torch relay, with some 3,000 runners taking part. For local residents, most of the excitement will begin July 4 in the final days leadour view ing up to the opening ceremonies on July 10 of the Toronto 2015 Pan Games. Relay to have AmAfter its visit to Harbourfront huge impact this Saturday, the torch will be carried to the Distillery District in Ontario by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield for a community celebration before heading out across Canada. During its journey, the torch will visit Richmond, B.C.; Calgary, Alberta, during the Stampede; Winnipeg, Manitoba, where Canada last hosted the Pan Am Games in 1999; and Halifax, Nova Scotia. It’s in Ontario, though, where the torch relay will have the biggest impact. Virtually every corner of the province will be visited, with community celebrations planned at numerous locations. As host city, Toronto will have a number of celebrations – with events planned specifically for Scarborough, North York, and Etobicoke in early July. On June 28, the torch will be in the city for the annual Pride Parade. Also, a unique event is set for July 4 at the Prince Edward Viaduct (also known as the Bloor Viaduct). The viaduct will be lit up to create a multicoloured effect on the Luminous Veil, which encases the famous bridge. Community groups including the Danforth BIA, which has incorporated its annual Thrill of the Grill event into the celebration, will be on the bridge to welcome the torch and the relay runners. Metroland Media Toronto will also be a big part of that celebration as we are hosting games and events for kids on the viaduct. For more on the torch relay, visit us at www. insidetoronto.com/toronto-pan-am-games

The status of symbolism at city hall

S

ymbolism counts for a lot in Toronto politics: certainly for more than it should. The Gardiner Expressway, which is really just a strip of elevated concrete and asphalt used by a few of Toronto’s many commuters, is also a symbolic battleground for suburban motorists and downtown pedestrians. Next month at council, that potent symbolism will go up against measly facts and mere expert opinion and more than likely end in council spending an extra $500 million to build new elevated ramps from the Gardiner to the Don Valley Parkway. Such is how it goes when councillors play to their home crowd: from a cynically political perspective, everyone on council will be a winner no matter the outcome. Of course, not all political symbolism at city hall is a slam dunk.

david nickle the city Some of these debates can be treacherous ones indeed – and some of them are very small. On Tuesday, Mayor John Tory’s generally right-ofcentre executive committee spent a good portion of a short meeting dancing around a symbolic leghold trap set by generally left-of-centre councillors Mike Layton and Glenn De Baeremaeker. The two had put forward a member’s motion to have council establish an “environmental bill of rights.” The motion contains many “rights” that very few voters would want to pass up: a right to breathe and drink clean air and water and eat safe food; access to nature, to know about pollutants and the right to take part in decision-

making. It also lays responsibility on council to promote these rights, and by the by, points to matters of policy that also have great symbolic value for political brands. Council would have to get behind cycling, walking and transit as a preferred way to get around. No fools, the committee members were not having any of it. Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong made it clear that his constituents weren’t fond of pedestrian scrambles and other things they believed promoted congestion. Councillor David Shiner suggested his elderly constituents wouldn’t take kindly to being encouraged to walk and bicycle. But they weren’t about to vote it down - because oh, the symbolism of that would have been an embarrassment. Other municipalities – more than

50 of them according to Layton – had passed a similar bill of rights already. So the committee did the sensible thing, and sent it off to the interim city manager for a report to come back late in the fall. Layton was disappointed at that prospect and, laying cards on the table, expressed hope it could come before the federal election. Because after all, it would be really something if Canada’s largest city could make it clear that its policies and practices were all aimed toward preserving the environment, just as Torontonians were set to join their fellow Canadians passing judgement on the environmentally dodgy Conservative government record. Now that would be what you would call symbolic. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Reach him on Twitter: @DavidNickle

were assigned to overhaul the intersection. “We’ve ended up with a redesign by students that is way more user-friendly for everyone,” McComish said. The redesign, agreed McComish and Chisholm, simplifies the intersection. “The current Dundas Street West/Dupont Street/Annette Street intersection has failed to regulate modern traffic flow safely and efficiently,” noted students Nikola Kostic, Amy Wang, Adrian Cheung, Susan Lu and Yanbo Wang in their report. “Traffic is forced to make dangerous turns with no clear line of sight while pedestrians and cyclists are made to compete with motorized vehicles for road space, producing a dangerous, unwelcoming, stressful environment for users and local residents alike.” The students are proposing closing off Old Weston Road, making it a dead-end street. Those who live on the “infrequently used” road would use Watkinson Avenue

to access Dundas Street West. Meanwhile, the Dupont ‘slip road,’ which acts as a ramp from Dundas Street West to Dupont Street would be closed off. By closing off these routes, an acre of green space could be created and a pedestrian footbridge could be created over the reclaimed land, McComish said. In April, the students presented their projects in front of the likes of Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks and members of the WBCA. The goal is to get this intersection redesign on the city’s radar, McComish said. “And, have it funded for study by the traffic and transportation departments,” he said. “We want the city to take this on, to come up with their own study – we’d like to get on various departments’ five-year plan.” To find out more, or to get involved, visit www.thewestbend.ca, or join the Facebook group Toronto West Bend Community Association.

>>>from page 1 conversation tucked out of the way in one of her daughters’ bedrooms. “It’s a really nice help.” For six years, Fiore Dodge and her husband, Kelly, have been transforming the house, previously owned by a 96-year-old man who had raised his three kids there, into their dream home. However, their efforts had to be put on hold when Fiore Dodge was diagnosed with breast cancer while on maternity leave with their youngest daughter, who was eight months at the time. “I thought I had a blocked milk duct,” Fiore Dodge recalled. “I went to my GP, who sent me for an ultrasound.” Of the diagnosis, Fiore Dodge said, “It was pretty crazy. You go into coping mode. You go into it with the attitude, ‘I’ve gotta do this.’” Fi o re D o d g e w a s n o stranger to the disease, her mother had lived with breast cancer on and off for 15 years. Inspired, Fiore Dodge worked with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. She was nominated by Rethink Breast Cancer for Wow’s campaign. “I was used to what you go through – I had an understanding,” she said. Fiore Dodge underwent chemotherapy, a mastectomy and radiation followed by reconstructive surgery in February 2013. She wasn’t surprised when she suffered a sore back in the months following. She had to endure physiotherapy treatments as well. In November of that year, the relentless pain got even worse. At an appointment with her physician, Fiore Dodge was told her spine was fractured in two places. The cancer had metastasized to her bones. Surgeons removed the cancerous sections of her spine and put in two metal rods. “Thirty per cent of breast cancer cases metastasizes

into the bones, brain, liver and lungs,” Fiore Dodge said. Having her bedroom refreshed with a new colour paint is extra special, she said, because she spent so much time there recovering. Meanwhile, her husband kept the family afloat working full time and taking care of the kids. That’s why Fiore Dodge gets emotional when talking about the gift Wow 1 Day

painting has given her – it’s a gift, really, for her husband, one less thing that needs to be done, she said. These days, she relishes in the regular, every day moments she wasn’t able to take part in while she was in treatment, like walking her kids to school or taking them to gymnastics.

Cancer survivor Jasmin Fiore Dodge left, her daughter Kaia, husband Kelly Dodge and daughter Adria take a break outside their home after being surprised Saturday with a free house painting by Wow 1 Day Painting. Below, Wow 1 Day Painting team member Simon Parr gets to work. Photos/EDUARDO LIMA

City councillor wants TTC to help music fans get to shows The Baby Contest is back and everyone is a winner! All participating Babies receive a gift! Great prizes available to be won!! Saturday, July 11th, 2015 9am on the bandstand stage at Windermere St. & Bloor Street West

A Toronto city councillor wants the TTC to do a better job of providing transportation to major music festivals. In a letter to the TTC board, Mike Layton notes major music events such as the Field Trip and the Toronto Jazz Festival, generate hundreds of millions of dollars to the country and local economy. But when a concert venue is located away from major transit, it’s a logistical “nightmare” for those without access to a car. And those with a car fight for limited parking. The board was to consider the request at its meeting yesterday. MONTH KICKS OFF ACROSS TORONTO wBIKE

The first 15 entries received in each of the three age groups (newborn-6 months, 6 months-1 year and 1 year-18 months) received by midnight, Sunday, July 5, 2015 will be our contestants...45 spots available in total. All contest participants will be contacted and given a registration number. For complete contest rules, please visit www.insidetoronto.com/contests.

This week marked the start of Bike Month, an undertaking organized by Metrolinx agency Smart Commute and local municipalities across the GTA, intended to promote the many virtues of cycling.

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT The event kicked off Monday, May 25 with Bike to Work Day and continues until Thursday, June 25 featuring a full calendar of events from workshops to group rides. Visit www.gotransit.com/ cycling for more information. PROVIDERS MARK MILESTONES wTRANSIT

Both the TTC and GO Transit celebrated milestones recently for separate landmark events that happened to take place on the same date. As columnist and historian Mike Filey describes in a recent article for a Toronto daily Saturday, May 23 marked the launch of GO’s operations back in 1967 in an effort deal with “worsening traffic congestion” on highways east

and west of the city (sound familiar). Seventy years before that, Toronto the Good finally allowed the running of streetcar service for the first time ever – on a Sunday. OPENs EARLY THROUGH GAMES wSUBWAY

Also last weekend, on Sunday to be precise, Mayor John Tory announced the subway will open at 6 a.m. throughout the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. For those hoping for a permanent shift to an earlier opening time on Sunday, TTC CEO Andy Byford said TTC staff is looking into the matter. Beyond costs, he said TTC workers use the three extra hours of downtime on Sundays before the subway opens at 9 a.m. for needed maintenance work. Rahul Gupta is The Villager’s transit reporter. Students rally behind teacher fighting cancer Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton’s Randy Brown said support is ‘overwhelming’ HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Hundreds of parents, teachers, students and former students gathered on the Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School field to honour and celebrate automotive and transportation technology teacher Randy Brown, who was recently diagnosed with gastrointestinal cancer. “This is overwhelming that somebody respects you this much in life,” Brown told The Villager from his desk in his auto shop. “I came here to do a job and do a job well and I’ve been so fortunate.” Brown broke the news of his illness to his colleagues about a week and a half ago in principal Derek Chen’s

office. “We were all here balling

our eyes out. It’s hard to hear the news that one of your

own is fighting for his life. It’s tough,” Chen said. “It was really touching because his department is made up mainly of men and to see all of them breaking down...it was so intense. I couldn’t hold it in. It got to me.” Brown said his illness has reached a “pretty serious point” and plans on heading to San Diego for a second opinion with oncologists. Rob Zarcone met Brown in 1988 when he was just 16 years old, when he used to work at a Goodyear store. Now 43, with a family of his own, Zarcone credits Brown for his push into the automotive industry where he is the supervisor of national technical support services for Honda Canada Inc. and also works on his own race

cars with Brown by his side as a team member. “He was my father figure,” Zarcone said, taking a moment to gather his emotions. “Randy never shied away from helping the entry level tech like myself at the time. He was concerned about developing the younger staff and just talking to us. He truly wants everybody to succeed.” At the celebration, which featured music and a barbecue, Brown could be seen chatting with students and parents and community members, being embraced in long hugs. “The kids in this neighbourhood are so fabulous it’s amazing. People always say bad things about the kids, but it’s not true,” Brown said.

“I don’t care how they dress, I don’t care what they say, we were all young once and we had our slang I’m sure our parents didn’t like some of the things we did and said. But they’re awesome kids that do an awesome job that are here to learn and move onto the next step.” Randy has been teaching at Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton since 1999 and there’s no shortage of people who have been touched by his caring nature and generosity as a teacher. “He’s touched a lot of people and everyone who is coming today has a special connection with him,” Chen said.

Bike tour features stops with readings by 12 local authors >>>from page 1 west corridor that is ideal for cycling,” Wilson said. Over the course of eight stops, Books on Bloor participants will be privy to insight on urban planning from local politicians, and will be treated to live readings from 12 Toronto-based authors including Vincent Lam, Christine Fischer Guy and Alissa York. The 13-kilometre ride

e a s t , a c c o m p a n i e d by Toronto police’s bicycle unit, will commence at Six Points intersection at 11 a.m. and will conclude at the parkette across from Castle Frank station. Wilson and Lewis, who take time from their very full-time jobs at Penguin Random House to organize the event, are encouraging Torontonians to ditch their cars and see and hear the

city on two wheels. “I have a car, but I choose to ride my bike. I appreciate my city so much more that way. I don’t drive through the city. I drive in it,” Wilson said. Along with introducing participants to local shops, restaurants and authors, Wilson, co-captain of Cycle Toronto’s Ward 13 Bike Group, hopes the event will raise awareness on cycling

Etobicoke-Lakeshore MPP Peter Milczyn, who will be speaking at Six Points Saturday, said new cycling infrastructure will be part of the re-development. “Part of the road reconfiguration was to eliminate all of the on-ramps and offramps in order to create ‘normal’ roads accessible to pedestrians,” he said of the Bloor-Dundas-Kipling interchange.

infrastructure and accessibility issues facing Toronto. She has been keeping tabs on the $40-million Six Points interchange reconfiguration in central Etobicoke, and said there is a lack of connectivity for cyclists needing to go downtown or to the waterfront safely. “We have all of these great things, but we don’t have protected bikes lanes to get to them,” Wilson said.

“Separated from traffic and pedestrian sidewalks, you’ll have approximately 10 foot wide raised bike lanes for cyclists,” Milczyn said. People with or without bikes are encouraged to attend Saturday’s book ride, as the stops are accessible via the Bloor subway line.

Top 5 Tips For Caregivers The Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) provides a variety of supports to those who are transitioning from hospital to home, and to those who need support to remain in their homes. The province of Ontario spends only approximately $2.1 billion on home-based health care (Ontario Home Care Association, 2014), however, this figure does not take into account the considerable support and assistance that is provided by informal caregivers. These people include family members, friends, and neighbours, all of whom are often faced with feelings of stress and are overwhelmed while caring for their loved ones. Fortunately, there are a few simple things that can help alleviate the stress that may be felt by those who are providing caregiving support in the home. Here are five suggestions for caregivers to make daily activities a little bit easier: 1) Accept Your Feelings – It’s normal for caregivers to have a range of feelings related to their roles. Anger, frustration, stress and anxiety are common emotions that occur when one is the primary caregiver for an elderly or ill loved one. Accept your feelings as normal and remember

that you’re not alone. 2) Have an outlet – Join a support group of other caregivers or speak regularly to a close family member or friend who will provide you with a sounding board for your emotions surrounding caregiving. Just knowing that someone is there to listen can make a world of difference. 3) Ask for help – Support from others for even the simplest things can go a long way when coping and providing caregiver support to a loved one. Oftentimes, asking for help can result in enough stress-relief to give you the emotional energy to keep going. 4) Take care of yourself – You’re no good to your loved one if you are not feeling up to par. Be sure to get plenty of rest, eat well and get out of the house whenever you can. 5) Connect With the Community – Be sure to look into community resources that can provide additional help and resources as you continue to support your loved one. For more information about supports and community services for seniors, contact the Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) at (416) 506-9888 or visit www.healthcareathome.ca.

he Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games will be off to a splashing start when the torch touches down in the city Saturday for the start of the 41-day Torch Relay. The Pan Am flame was lit Monday during a traditional ceremony in Teotihuacan, Mexico, at the Pyramid of the Sun, which was organized and hosted by the Mexican Olympic Committee (MOC). A float plane carrying a flame lit inside a lantern will touch down in Lake Ontario Saturday, where it will be handed to Elder Garry Sault of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation, who will then travel with the lantern by canoe to shore for a ceremony conducted by Chief Bryan LaForme at Harbourfront Centre. The first torchbearer – whose identity is being kept under wraps – will then leave Canada Square at Harbourfront Centre, where the torch will be passed to several bearers before Col. Chris Hadfield will run with it into The Distillery District. Family oriented celebrations will be held at both Harbourfront Centre, 235 Queens Quay, and The Distillery District, 55 Mill St. Festivities will begin at Canada Square at 2:30 p.m., featuring a soundtrack produced by local musical

The Danforth BIA will host the sixth annual event fundraiser from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the east end of the viaduct, where the Luminous Veil – the suicide barrier rods – will be lit for the first time. “We usually hold this event at Broadview and Chester, but because the bridge will be lit, we moved it to there,” said Jennifer Jones, vice-chair of the BIA, adding the top half of the bridge will remain permanently lit. The Thrill of the Grill, co-hosted by The Food Ne t w o r k’s c h e f Ly n n Crawford and Tommy Smyth of HGTV’s Sarah 101, will feature a handful of chefs serving up items including ribs, corn and beer. “I hope this is the start of many events on the bridge,” said Jones, adding the BIA was instrumental with the initial funding and advocating for the Luminous Veil and lighting. As for being part of Pan Am Games celebrations, she said residents might be slow to warm to the sporting event, but once it arrives it will be fully embraced. “Any city that is hosting an event like this has a chance to really turn the dial on the city up a notch,” Jones said.

or two – said being selected “is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” “It is such a beautiful symbol: a flame, which travels through so many communities and for a few hundred metres I get to be a part of that international experience in my hometown.” She is encouraging everyone to go out and support the torchbearers. As it happens, Yausie’s family friend ran the torch relay for the Calgary Olympic Games in 1988.

It will be a truly special moment. – Sarah Yausie

“I went out to see her that day and cheered her on,” she said of her friend. “She has been a true inspiration through my life and now she is coming out to cheer me on. It will be a truly special moment.” Yausie, who applied to be a torch bearer through her work, won’t know her running route until closer to July 6.

“I hope it’s close to High Park so that everyone reading this can come out and have fun,” she said. “We grow up seeing the image of the flame and what emotion it brings to international sporting events, now I have the privilege to be a part of that moment in history.”. Torch relay starts Saturday The Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games’ torch arrives in Toronto Saturday for the start of the 41-day Torch Relay. A float plane carrying a lit flame inside a lantern will touch down in Lake Ontario near Toronto’s waterfront, where it will be handed to an Elder of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation, who will then travel by canoe for a ceremony by Chief Bryan LaForme at Harbourfront Centre. The flame for the torch was lit Monday, May 25 during a ceremony at the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, Mexico. The torch will then be passed to several bearers before Col. Chris Hadfield will run with it into The Distillery District. Goes until 6:30 p.m.
