FoodShare raising funds for van to transport school-grown produce Last van lost in accident; online campaign runs until end of month LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com FoodShare’s ‘School Grown’ program is seeking the community’s help to purchase a cargo van so students can get their produce to farmers’ markets and restaurants. The Dufferin and Bloor West

streets-based non-profit agency, whose mission is to improve access to affordable and healthy food from field to table, lost its van to an accident over the winter. Fortunately no one was hurt, said Katie German, School Grown’s senior co-ordinator. But the van was not recoverable. “The insurance value

wouldn’t cover another vehicle,” German said. “It was already pretty old.” A n d s o, u n d e t e r re d , FoodShare has launched a fundraising campaign through the crowdfunding site ‘IndieGoGo’ to purchase a used, fuel-efficient vehicle as well as a cargo bike in an effort to reduce its total envi-

St. Joe’s reveals new outpatient mental health unit St. Joseph’s Health Centre has unveiled its new and modern centre for its outpatient mental health clients. To enhance the care it offers those living with mental illness, the hospital is opening more space to support patients as they transition from the hospital and back into the community. The newly renovated unit

for the Outpatient Mental Health Program includes 13,000 square feet of bright and modern space, providing a recovery-focused and safe healing environment for outpatient clients. “Moving our Outpatient Mental Health Program from our Sunnyside Building into the main hospital gives us better integration within our Mental Health and Addictions Program,” said

Dr. Jose Silveira, chief of psychiatry and medical program director of the Mental Health and Addictions Program, in a statement. unit now two floors “The new unit is now physically located two floors down from our largest inpatient mental health unit. This move means we will have greater synergy within

our program, so we can start connecting our inpatients early in their care with the outpatient team and support they will need when they leave our hospital and return the community.” The expanded space also gives patients a safe place to connect with one another, share their experiences and offer peer support, according to Elizabeth Buller, president and CEO.

TV museum shows Moses Znaimer’s love for the set NATALIE CHU nchu@insidetoronto.com It began with a television set shaped like a woman. For High Park resident Moses Znaimer, the Philco Predicta Pedestal, a 1958 American TV with a long, narrow chassis, was the piece to ignite his obsession. “I was crazy about it,” said Znaimer upon first viewing the television set years ago. Now the Canadian media icon has an entire museum dedicated to his love for television. About 175 vintage sets are currently on display in the new MZTV museum in Liberty Village, and there are nearly 10,000 TV-related items, including original papers relating to televisions, in the collection. Each set’s scientific and historical importance was not lost on Znaimer, but it didn’t drive him to be a collector. “The fact is what got me going was I thought the object was beautiful,” Znaimer said. He began collecting in the mid ’60s, but only became serious about it in 1992, when

MZTV museum owner and television set collector Moses Znaimer attends the opening of his new museum last week. Left, a visitor takes in the Lucite television set exhibit/

he started acquiring other people’s collections. For Znaimer, picking his favourite piece of the collection is like choosing between kids, though the Philco Predicta remains the symbol of the museum. One of the most valuable pieces, a clear Lucite television set, is insured for a million dollars. The piece, one of two featured in the 1939 RCA television fair, was lost for nearly 40

years after the war. Znaimer has the only recovered set. Though Znaimer said he is pretty confident he has collected at least one of every vintage television set out there, he is open to the potential of items he is “completely unaware of.” His newest addition, a pair of television speakers, are what Znaimer explains as the rich’s attempt to mask the rather “crude look” of the early technology before the

Second World War. To Znaimer, the television set has essentially disappeared in today’s technology. “There is very little that you can find beautiful except the thinness of the object,” Znaimer said. As for the future of television, Znaimer said there is no end to the size or detail viewers can experience through the screen. “As gripping as it is today,

we ain’t see nothing yet,” he said. “The history of media technology is about trying to get closer to the real thing, whether its ultra-high def or 3D television or holographic television or television we step into, it’s sure to come,” Znaimer said. Znaimer’s current focus is retracing the history of each inventor of the television sets. He is also in the process of building a radio set collec-

tion. The MZTV museum in Liberty Village was open to the public during Doors Open last weekend. Regular hours will begin on July 2 from Tuesdays to Fridays at noon to 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors with daily tours beginning at 4 p.m.

Excitement builds over World Cup

Write us

T

he World Cup soccer championship officially kicks off June 12 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with a game between the host country and Croatia, but the excitement in Toronto is already starting to build. Short of being in Brazil, Toronto has to be the best place in the world for soccer fans to watch the World Cup. Most residents are already very familiar with how our city gets all dressed up and celebrates World Cup. Beyond the flags waving from cars, there are vendors selling hats, shirts and flags, and fans gathering in locations across Toronto to catch the action. Everybody will be talking soccer between June 12 and July 13, when the tourney wraps up with the championship game in Rio. There are 32 teams taking part in the World Cup and Toronto has significant our view demographic links to many of those teams. For instance, the Italian, Greek, Portuguese, German, English, French and Dutch diasporas are large and well established throughout the city. We’re all familiar with scenes of flag-waving fans filling the streets and celebrating after their teams win. Parts of Little Italy, Little Portugal, Corso Italia, and Greektown on the Danforth are seas of celebrating fans after wins by their teams. What’s especially interesting and makes the World Cup in our city so much fun is the mixing of fan bases, and how the Brazilian fans will watch and celebrate in Little Portugal, and parts of Corso Italia along St. Clair West have also become home-base for many fans with links to South American teams other than Brazil. North York has a strong centre of fans of African teams, and is also where Iranian fans gather. It’s all a part of what makes Toronto great. Here at Metroland Media Toronto, we know how important the World Cup is to our city. That’s why we’ve got special coverage in today’s paper to introduce soccer fans to our website dedicated to the World Cup in Toronto. You can access the website by going to www. insidetoronto.com/worldcupTO There’s information there about all 32 teams, the culture and demographics related to those team’s countries in the Greater Toronto Area, and information on the best places to watch games locally.

column

Tory’s transit plan both compelling, speculative

O

h, John Tory is a coy one. All this time when the mayoral candidate was talking about building a “Yonge Street Relief Line,” we assumed that he was simply renaming the Downtown Relief Line – and that his promise to start building the thing right away, at the same time as the city and province built a subway to Scarborough, was pie-inthe-sky. Well, it turns out the reason Tory didn’t call his secret transit plan the downtown relief line was he doesn’t intend to build the downtown relief subway line any time soon. His Yonge Street Relief line is something else: a 52-kilometre, 22-stop SmartTrack line, using GO Transit rail lines for an above-ground subway that will stretch from the western reaches of Etobicoke to the middle of Scarborough, and dip south to Union

david nickle the city Station touching Main Station in the east and Dundas West station in the west. It will cost $8 billion divided between three levels of government, and the city will pay for its portion using Tax Increment Financing (TIF), the same system of borrowing against future property assessment increases that Gordon Chong advocated when Mayor Rob Ford hired him to come up with a funding plan for his failed subway proposal on Sheppard Avenue. The idea itself is a refinement and expansion of a proposal that failed 2010 mayoral candidate Rocco Rossi proposed – to use GO lines as an interim downtown relief line. And it is a compelling idea. It provides rapid com-

muter transit to places that are pretty far off, and gives commuters from the edge of the subway system an alternative to clogging up the Bloor-Yonge interchange as they head to work downtown. It is also, in the context of this election, a too-cute game of rope-a-dope: an attempt to get his opponents to spend their energy attacking and questioning a suspected plan that is nothing like the real plan. For a short time after its revelation, it forces Tory’s opponents to basically call him on his semantics. It also, however, allows his opponents to accuse him of hiding a flip-flop behind semantics. Earlier in the campaign, Tory did make it clear that a downtown relief subway line was essential, and sharply criticized Chow and Ford for not embracing it as a number-one priority. And while it is true that the new plan sidesteps

some of the logistical problems of getting a downtown relief subway going right away, it raises other problems. To begin with, the TIF model of financing is another semantic trick: it is debt by another name, and with the billion-dollar Scarborough subway plan, Toronto will have nearly reached its debt ceiling. And like Chow’s downtown relief plan, Tory’s surface rail plan relies on a massive federal and provincial buy-in to go ahead, and in that sense, is just as speculative. The plan also doesn’t obviate the need for the TTC’s downtown relief line – the city has to find the money for that too. And as Tory himself pointed out not too long ago, that needs to come sooner rather than later. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton named newest Regional Arts Centre LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School has a new title. The Toronto Catholic District School Board recently bestowed upon the school the designation of ‘Regional Arts Centre’ for the south central region of Toronto – even though the high school at the corner of Bloor Street West and Dundas Street West had been known for about a decade as the Art School @ Marrocco. “I am so proud that the school has been awarded the designation of Regional Arts Centre. It is a true reflection of the focus and emphasis we place on the arts at the school, and a recognition of the exceptional programming and faculty that we have,” Principal Derek Chen said. “With the designation, we hope the message comes across very clearly that we are intent on attracting stu-

dents who want to attend a school with high academic standards, and one in which they can excel in one or more of the many areas in the arts that we offer.” About 12 years ago, teachers Jeana McCabe and Heather Corriveau questioned just how the Catholic high school could set itself apart from the public school system. “We thought, ‘How do we compete with the public system when four of our credits are required religion courses,” McCabe said. McCabe and Corriveau credit a former Bishop Marrocco teacher by the name of Sean Gorman, who took the initiative and said, ‘Why don’t we teach religion through the arts?’ And, that’s what he did. He turned parables, like The Good Samaritan, into dramatic productions while modernizing the stor y, McCabe said. “He took the curriculum, the religious text and

scripture and created theatre productions to deliver religion courses in Grade 9,” Corriveau added. In Grade 10, because McCabe’s background is in film, her religion arts class creates social justice documentary film shorts. She encourages her students to go out on the street and talk to people who are experiencing social injustice, such as the homeless and seniors. The high school’s new designation coincides with the 10th anniversary of its annual ‘Just Docs Festival,’ which took place Tuesday, May 27 at the Revue Cinema in Roncesvalles Village. Since the school became art-focused a decade ago, enrolment has increased and maintained over the years in an environment in which student populations are decreasing, McCabe said.

Tom Ostler is part of the Bloor West Village Idiots, a cycling team that's participating in this year's Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, June 7 and 8.

Bloor West Village Idiots cycle for research dollars Four team members preparing for Ride to Conquer Cancer are cancer survivors LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Avid cyclist and cancer research fundraiser Tom Ostler is an idiot – and he’s proud to be called one. He’s part of a 35-member team called ‘The Bloor West Village Idiots’ that’s taking part in this year’s Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, a two-day 200 kilometre ride from Toronto to Niagara Falls, benefitting the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8. Since its inception seven years ago, the ride has raised more than $99.3 million for cancer research across the province and has become the largest cycling event in Canadian history. The event is particularly close to Ostler’s heart because he has family members and friends affected by the disease. He’s been a participant for seven years. “My brother-in-law lost an eye to cancer,” he told The Villager. “We have four survivors on the team. One long-term teammate has returned for treatment – he is scheduled to have a stem

cell transplant, again, this summer. So, we are all motivated even more this year.” Two out of three Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Every day, more than 500 will be diagnosed with cancer and more than 200 will die from the disease. “A number of us have had the privilege of hearing some of the researchers at Princess Margaret explain how the money raised has been put to ground-breaking research,” said Ostler. “Opening ceremonies and crossing the finish line are emotional moments as we all are riding for someone – unfortunately, many of us are riding for a number of family and friends.” Two years ago, the Bloor West Village Idiots raised more than $105,000. The team cycles together every weekend. “It’s a big social network,” Ostler said. Ostler says he enjoys the scenic route from Toronto to Niagara Falls as well as the camaraderie along the way. “The ride is extremely well organized. There are rest stops every 30 kilometres or

so with a major lunch stop at the midway point each day,” he said. “Medical crews ride along with us and various bicycle shops across the GTA send out mechanical crews in vans to help with issues people might have with their bikes.”

camp overnight Cyclists have the option of camping overnight at Mohawk College in Hamilton where there are refreshments, a “generous meal” and entertainment, along with tents offering massage, chiropractic and physiotherapy support as well as a scheduled yoga stretching sessions. “The departure from Hamilton on Sunday morning along the ridge of the escarpment is one of the most picturesque rides in the region,” Ostler said. Annual Chuck’s Run in High Park raises research funds for dystonia In spite of severe physical impairments and discomfort, Franco Mazzella plans to take part in the 9th annual Chuck’s Run for Dystonia in High Park on Sunday, June 1. As its ambassador, it’s Mazzella’s mission to motivate and inspire others to join him in his fight to live a pain-free life. Mazzella, 31, is in constant pain caused by Myoclonus Dystonia, a rare form of dystonia, the debilitating neurological disorder that he has endured for more than half his life. In the face of severe physical limitations, Mazzella maintains a positive attitude. That’s why he was chosen as the 2014 Ambassador for Chuck’s 5K Run/Walk for Dystonia. With no cure and few treatments available, primary and secondary dystonias affect the lives of more than 250,000 Canadians. “F i n d i n g n e w t re a t ments for dystonia is abso-

lutely critical,” said Diane Gillespie, executive director of the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation Canada (DMRFC), in a statement. “Like so many other dystonia sufferers, Franco is a hero for enduring the pain and discomfort caused by dystonia. Maintaining a bright and optimistic outlook, with the support of a loving family is what helps him through each day, but what he really needs are new and better treatments.” A difficult disorder to identify, Mazzella, like so many others with dystonia, endured a seven-year long “diagnostic odyssey,” before finally being diagnosed in 2008. After suffering for three more years with little to no medications to relive his constant pain, he and his family pursued the only treatment available to him – deep brain stimulation. While the surgery improved his symptoms, Mazzella still braves

pain, muscle dysfunction and dystonic storms, which are described as intense with prolonged periods of muscle spasms. The toll it is taking on his life and his family’s has been overwhelming. “Research is the key to making advances in diagnosis and treatment for dystonia”, said Dr. Dennis Bulman, senior scientist at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, who specializes in myoclonus dystonia research, in a statement. “While important progress is being made and new treatments are not that far off, we must continue to push forward, raising funds, through events like Chuck’s Run, which are critical to the development of new treatments.” The walk takes place at 11 a.m. with registration from 9 to 10:45 a.m.

Toronto cycling app launched The city has launched a new smartphone app tracking cyclist movement. The Toronto Cycling App logs, with the user’s permission, a typical bike trip and sends that data to the city for analysis. City planners will then use the information provided, including the trip route, date, length and the purpose of the trip, to incorporate in a new bike plan. Other features of the app, available for Android and iPhone users, are GPS mapping and stats tracking calories burned over the trip. Visit www.toronto.ca of health Completes study wboard

How to Select Your Home Improvement Contractor The Certified Contractors Network (CCN) is an independent, North American organization focused on increasing the professionalism in the contacting industry, as well educating home owners on how to select a professional contractor. CCN states that “the critical factor in a successful contracting project is selecting the right contractor”. With the multitude of home renovation shows now on television, home owners are learning that not all renovations go as they had hoped. Most dissatisfied construction project victims limit their investigation focus to “How much will it cost?” even though studies clearly show that most dissatisfaction involves the lower bid contractors.

Respite care options for seniors With the warm weather finally around the corner, many are making plans for their summer vacations. For family caregivers of the elderly, however, planning a trip can take on a more complicated perspective. Many caregivers who are responsible for the day-to-day care of a senior member of the family are often stressed about how the much-needed support of their loved one will continue while they’re away. Daily health and medical obligations that are required by many seniors can make it a challenge in planning time away from the home. Fortunately there are a number of options for caregivers who want to assure that their elderly loved one is well taken care of while the family is away. Known as “Respite Care,” the service provides temporary, special care in the home or a substitute living arrangement for seniors while their regular caregivers are unavailable. In many cases, this type of care provides a brief period of relief or rest (usually more than 24 hours) for the family members, guardians or others who provide care. Respite Care comes in many forms and there are a variety of options for caregivers who want to assure that their loved ones’ needs are addressed during these times. Following are details on the alternative caregiving solutions for seniors:

IN-HOME NURSING AND PRIMARY CARE Through community organizations like the Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC), seniors are able to receive the nursing care that they require in the comfort of

FoodShare’s School Grown farming program has launched a fundraiser to purchase a van and bike to help transport fresh produce to markets and restaurants

their own homes. During times where regular caregivers are unavailable, arrangements for short-term care from a Registered Nurse or Nurse Practitioner can be made, allowing clients to continue to receive assistance with medical needs as required. Similarly, Toronto Central CCAC can coordinate appointments for primary care providers to visit clients inhome, where appropriate, in order to continue the healthcare schedule that is required.

IN-HOME PERSONAL SUPPORT Seniors often need daily care with general activities such as food preparation, feeding, bathing, laundry and housecleaning. Respite care options coordinated through Toronto Central CCAC can include the services of a Personal Support Worker who is able to take over the activities that are usually provided by the primary caregiver. As well, services that provide meal

delivery and transportation to medical appointments are also available.

SHORT-STAY PROGRAMS In some instances, caregivers may be out of town for a while, requiring that their loved ones have alternative care arrangements made for them. During these times, seniors can be connected with a long-term care facility or retirement home that specializes in providing short-stay, respite care. Through these facilities, arrangements can be made for seniors requiring assistance with a short stay. The minimum time frame for this type of respite care is five days, with the maximum support offered up to 60 days at one time. Contact and coordination can be done through Toronto CCAC. Kathy Lashley is a Client Services Manager at Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre. For more information go to www.healthcareathome. ca or call (416) 506-9888

>>>from page 1 Grown, a schoolyard farming social enterprise project, four summers ago. Students have been growing produce at two high schools, Bendale Business and Technical Institute, and Eastdale Collegiate Institute. “It’s really awesome to see the pride the students take in the food that they grew,” said German in a video on the IndieGoGo site. “We have students who start our program and don’t recognize most of the food that we’re growing and by the end of the season, they’re proudly introducing themselves as farmers to the customers ” During the school term, the

work in the gardens are connected to the curriculum Each summer students are farming and are paid full-time and have the option of earning co-op credits. The organically grown produce, including tomatoes, spring lettuce mix, baby spinach and arugula, is sold by the students at farmers’ markets and to local restaurants and goes back into school cafeteria programs. “By selling at farmers’ markets, the students are more engaged. They get to meet the people who eat their food,” German said. Operated like production farms, the gardens are tended by the students who

grow seedlings in the winter, prepare and plant the garden beds in the spring, weed and water crops, harvest the produce and take restaurant orders and sell at farmers’ markets, German said. Last year, students earned $14,500 in sales of produce while $1,600 of vegetables were donated to school meal programs and food banks. Produce is sold at the East Lynn Park Farmers Market and The Hogtown Cure Deli and Cafe in Brockton Village and Chef’s House at George Brown College. Polls were calm and well-run, says Nash Among thousands of international monitors posted throughout the country were 500 Canadians who participated in the independent Canadian mission to observe the Ukrainian presidential election held last Sunday. The MPs were among 162 people participating in observer missions run by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. Security concerns did not materialize in Kharkiv, both Nash and Opitz reported, although the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk were still in the grip of pro-Russian uprisings. Nash described the voting polls she observed as calm, orderly and well-run. “In some polls, there were lineups. It was nice to see so many parents bring their children. There was a real sense of the importance of this election. People welcomed the opportunity to have their say,” Nash said. Opitz reported similar observations at the polls he observed with Bezan. “The mood of people was quite buoyant. One kid, she literally skipped into the ballot box. She absolutely

couldn’t contain her joy doing that,” Opitz said. “Folks came out from all kinds of places to vote. I heard in Kyiv, the lineups were two hours long. That’s an indication of how determined people were to vote and how resolute they were to have an outcome.” Nash observed The Maidan, known as Independence Square, where 77 protestors were gunned down in February in Ukraine’s deadliest day of violence since the Second World War. “We passed by it. There was calm in The Maidan. It still had some protestors with their tents there. The crowds were not there. People seemed to be going about their business,” Nash said. Election observers came from across political parties, a move Nash welcomed and believes benefits Ukrainians. - With files from Torstar News Service

Nash and three other Canadian parliamentarians, Etobicoke Centre MP Ted Opitz, MP James Bezan and MP David Christopherson, acted as election observers at polls in that city. Opitz is chair, Nash vice-chair of the Canada-Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship Group. “The issue this election is the direction the country will take, keeping the country together and the security of people casting their ballots,” Nash said. “It’s a very important election for the future of Ukraine, and important for the fact that the outcome was so decisive.” Ukrainian voters endorsed by a reported 56 per cent majority chocolate tycoon Petro Poroshenko, who immediately said his team’s first steps “will focus on ending the war, the chaos, the unrest and bring peace to Ukraine,” he told thousands of cheering supporters at his election headquarters in Kyiv. Poroshenko also vowed to move for ward with an association agreement with the European Union, pledged action against corruption that has plagued Ukraine since its independence from Russia, and also promised to turn a page with Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously publicly pledged to work with whomever was elected Ukrainian president.

THE DAVENPORT RIDING has an estimated population of 102,360, and is bounded roughly by Eglinton Ave. W. to the north, Ossington Ave. to the east, the CN railway to the west, and Queen St. W. to the south. The riding was established in 1999 drawing from the Oakwood, Dovercourt, Parkdale, High Park-Swansea and a small part of York South neighbourhoods. Since October 2011, the riding – one of the most culturally diverse in the province – has been represented by NDP MPP Jonah Schein.

Tell us about one local issue you plan to champion as MPP?

2

What would you do as MPP to improve local transit?

3

Some of Davenport’s constituents face economic challenges. What would you do to help improve their standard of living?

4

Tell us about your background and qualifications.

■ High-quality, affordable child care is important to Davenport families. That’s why I’m disappointed that the NDP blocked our legislation to modernize the child care system and opposed the recent budget, which would have boosted the wages of child care workers and increased child care funding. I am committed to building on the government’s record of increasing Toronto’s child care funding by 70 per cent and protecting Full-Day Kindergarten, which is saving families about $6,500 annually.

■ At every opportunity I have fought for clean, electrified transit. I was so pleased to see funding for electrification of the Union Pearson Express and the entire GO Train system in the recent budget – and so disappointed to see the NDP oppose it. In addition, as part of a $5.5 billion investment in transit, Liberals would create a GO Regional Express Rail stop in Liberty Village, which would substantially reduce overcrowding on the Queen Streetcar.

■ I support policies that invest in

■ I was born in Portugal and moved

■ Creating jobs in Davenport and across the province is a key priority for me and the NDP. One in two jobs in the GTA is precarious, short-term work with no benefits. Youth unemployment is the highest in the country. New Democrats will create jobs by tying tax credits to job creation and investment in Ontario manufacturing. New Democrats will also raise the minimum wage to $12 an hour and peg it to inflation.

■ I will prioritize transit investments

■ We need to make Ontario a fairer place to live, which means investing in our public services. New Democrats will invest an additional $100 million in child care to keep licensed spaces open. Since the Liberal government approved hydro and natural gas rate increases of over 30 per cent, constituents have contacted me worried about how they will make ends meet. New Democrats will reduce electricity bills and take the HST off of home heating.

■ I grew up in West Toronto and

■ The most important issue for Dav-

■ As an MPP, I would fight for government programs that help people in need. The Green party stands for raising taxes to North American standards on corporations and polluters to balance the budget. We would not balance the budget on the backs of the poor or agree to any budget that did so. I would also ensure that my office was always open to my constituents and they would have direct access to me to help them in any way possible.

■ I worked as a criminal lawyer for 10 years in the trial and appeal courts in Toronto and the GTA and helped people from every part of the city parents, teenagers, and others who often struggled with serious personal and family issues. I also worked with judges, court officers, court reporters, police officers, and Crown attorneys. I came to see that we are all invested in the same issues, the same future. I am deeply attached to our community and have a strong affinity for public policy.

enport is to be connected north and south, east and west, with the rest of Toronto by rapid transit. I’d champion the idea of converting GO/CN lines on the north and south corridors into commuter lines with trains running throughout the day and newly built stations up and down the riding. I’d also insist on a timeline to convert the airport fixed link into an electrical line now, not some vague promise to do so in the unknown future.

that make sense and use fair ways to pay for them. The NDP is the only party that has prioritized the electrification of the Air Rail Link. Electric trains will allow for more stops along the route to serve our communities and integrate with our existing transit network. The NDP is also the only party that believes corporations should pay their fair share through an increase to the corporate tax rate and closing tax loopholes.

dedicated revenue source by way of a congestion tax, carbon tax, or road tolls. I’m talking about a closed loop of revenue solely dedicated to transit. It’s possible to build fully functional neighbourhood stations at places like Rogers, St. Clair West, Dupont, Dundas West, College, and Queen.

THE WORLD CUP

Soccer passion ignites across the city

The place to be for World Cup coverage

Toronto’s neighbourhoods come alive for the games; connect online

T

oronto soccer fans are getting ready to wave their flags next month when the World Cup of soccer begins in Brazil. Being one the of most diverse cities in the world means that when the World Cup takes place every four years, there is no shortage of fans cheering for the 32 teams taking part in the tournament. And this year will be no exception. The World Cup kicks off on June 12 with a game between host Brazil and Croatia in Sao Paulo. Scarborough’s Josie Tanga is of Italian descent and she is already looking forward to this year’s World Cup, in which Italy will be making its 14th straight appearance. “It’s great,” said Tanga of the World Cup and its importance to Toronto’s huge Italian-Canadian population.

we won it in 2004,” said Kouzoukas, who grew up in East York playing soccer. “That was the pinnacle for Greek fans,” he said of the 2004 Euro championship which Greece won 1-0 over host team Portugal. That win led to thousands of fans pouring onto Danforth Avenue, waving Greek flags and celebrating for hours. It also established Greektown on the Danforth, between Chester and Jones avenues, as the epicentre for Toronto’s Greek soccer fans during major tournaments such as the Euro and the World Cup. REALISTIC OUTLOOK

FIERCE SUPPORT “We have a huge fan base, and we love our Italian team. We support them no matter what.” Tanga said family and friends often gather at her home to watch the games when Italy is playing. “We have family and friends over and we get all dressed up for the game; wearing the bracelets and the hats,” she said. “Everyone gets very excited.” Of course, food is a big part of the celebration when it comes to watching the World Cup for Toronto’s fans supporting the countries taking part. “We make rice balls and pizza,” said Tanga. After enjoying the game in the relative calm of the home environment, Tanga said heading out to celebrate on Corso Italia, in the St. Clair and Lansdowne area, is also usually on the agenda providing Italy wins the match.

Go online to our World Cup site to find individual pages for each team with the latest news, blogs and cultural connections.

>> insidetoronto.com/worldcupTO It was Toronto’s Italian fans who started the tradition of massive World Cup celebrations in the city with huge turnouts and street parties during the 1982 tournament when Italy won over what was then West Germany. As for picking a winner this year, Tanga likes Italy. No surprise given her heritage and the fact Italy has won the World Cup four times; second only to Brazil’s five World Cup championships. “The Italians,

who else,” she said when asked to predict this year’s champ. “My kids might have a different opinion, though. (Cristiano) Ronaldo is a great player; maybe Portugal. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Italy, though.” For Sam Kouzoukas, the participation of Greece in this year’s World Cup makes him proud of the team he supports. “Historically, we’ve done better in the Euro (the European soccer championships) and

Kouzoukas is proud that Greece is making its second-straight World Cup appearance, but is realistic about his team’s chances of winning it all. “It’s a great accomplishment that Greece made it,” he said. He pointed out that Greek fans did not have a lot to cheer about in the 2010 World Cup during which their team went winless in their three preliminary round games, and were eliminated. However, Greece did advance to the quarterfinals of the 2012 Euro. Given his background of playing soccer and his Greek heritage, Kouzoukas said he finds it interesting how everyone in Toronto becomes a soccer expert once the World Cup begins. “When the World Cup comes, everyone is watching and everyone has an opinion. About two weeks before the World Cup and during it, everyone’s talking about it.” Hosting a World Cup event? Post it in our online calendar. Go to www. insidetoronto.com and click ‘Sign Up’.
