New playground defaced with graffiti markings
Carved creations
‘Childish’ scribbles upset parent LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com On a recent visit to the Jamie Bell Adventure Playground in High Park with her five-year-old son, Annie Prokopowich noticed some scribbles in black marker across the back of the newly constructed castle. She had spent the majority of her time at the bottom of the slide, watching her son’s descent over and over again before the two would head home, up the stairs of the ravine behind the castle. That’s when she saw the graffiti. “It’s o bv i o u s l y c h i l d i s h ,” Prokopowich said, referring to the
hand-written words, some in pen, others in pencil. “It’s just a shame. We’ve all done silly things that we didn’t recognize had greater consequences.” The structure is not even four months old and it’s already defaced, she said in dismay. “To whoever misses the old castle write your name in the circle (sic),” wrote one culprit in pencil. “I love you,” wrote another in black marker, a heart around it. Prokopowich felt so strongly towards the graffiti that she wrote a letter to the editor to The Villager newspaper. >>>CITY, page 14

Woman dead after sign Donate warm winter clothing falls on her during storm at annual drive for those in need A woman was killed when a sign mounted on a pole fell on her near Keele Street and St. Clair Avenue Monday. The woman believed to be in her 50s was struck and killed by a panel of an illuminated sign that had come lose just after 7 p.m. in the Stockyards, near Keele Street and St. Clair West. Emergency crews arrived at the scene to find the woman suffering from “obvious head and neck injuries,” said Police Const. Wendy Drummond.

The tree has survived decades of urban growth in the Roncesvalles community and is believed to be the oldest sidewalk tree in a commerical district. The tree was safeguarded by both the community and city urban planners during the reconstruction of Roncesvalles Avenue with the use of eco-flex pavers.
Junction historical society wins praise LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com West Toronto Junction Historical Society (WTJHS) president Neil Ross said he was caught off guard when the organization was recognized with not one, but two Heritage Toronto awards earlier this month. The local, charitable, volunteer organization was the recipient of the community heritage and 2012 Member’s Choice awards, handed out during a ceremony at Koerner Hall. “I was shocked,” Ross admitted to The Villager. “We knew we were up for a community heritage award, but not for the member’s choice. There’s a photo of me looking shocked.” The awards, said Ross, are recognition for how “profound and exciting Junction history is.” It’s also recognition for the WTJHS volunteers. “Our executive can take a certain pride in our interesting and innovative projects,” said Ross, citing the group’s

latest Heritage Toronto Walk featuring premier Junction architect James Ellis, organized in collaboration with the Junction Shul. The Heritage Toronto Awards, in its 38th year, recognizes and celebrates innovative work and programs that preserve and promote the city’s heritage.
The jury credited the historical society’s “impressive, diligent and rigourous documenting of the built and cultural history of its neighbourhood in a sustained way over many years. It commended the society’s approach to “leveraging and sharing resources as a model for others to emulate.”
WTJHS meetings take place on the first Thursday of every month at Annette Street Library in its downstairs community room. The society was formed in 1980 by a group of local residents with support from the City of Toronto planning and development department and then-councillor David White. A year later, it was incorporated as an affiliate of the Ontario Historical Society. Some of its projects include two books, an historical talk show and a four-part graphic novel series. Tonight, the WTJHS presents Monarchy in Canada: the Junction Debate. “Should we abolish the Monarchy in Canada and declare a Canadian Republic? Debaters Tom Freda, national director of the Citizens for a Canadian Republic and Ross will bring a “hilarious, but informed approach to their respective positions. This takes place at Annette Library, 145 Annette St. The 8:30 p.m. debate follows the society’s monthly business meeting at 7:30 p.m. Visit www.wtjhs.ca or call 416763-3161 for details.
The new ravine-level room at the Swansea Town Hall has yet to be completed, but it already has a new name. It has been christened The Village Room. The name was chosen from more than 80 submissions from local community members by the town hall board of directors. “We got a really great response with some great ideas,” said Swansea Town Hall spokesperson Carol Walmsley. “‘Village’ seemed to fit.” The moniker was inspired by Swansea Town Hall’s proud place as the “hub” of Swansea. The name reflects also that Swansea itself was incorporated as a village in 1926 – before its amalgamation with the City of Toronto in 1967. Construction resumed this summer only to be delayed again because of technical issues, reported Walmsley. Crews have finished pouring the roof, she said. The renovation project features the construction of the new Village Room at the already-bustling centre. The town hall board launched a naming campaign in July. A 2005 naming effort resulted in the moniker “The Founders’ Room” as part of phase one of the building’s redevelopment. Swansea Town Hall offers a wide variety of activities and events from exercise classes to games and life skills courses. It boasts a dental clinic, a memorial library, a day care, a seniors’ association and historical society. It is associated with several community groups, such as the Swansea Area Ratepayers’ Association and the Swansea Horticultural Society. – Lisa Rainford

Community has a role in planning for emergencies
T
he damage caused this week by Hurricane Sandy and its after-effects to both Toronto and the American Atlantic coast should stand as a reminder to all residents of the importance of emergency preparedness. Whether we think of it or not, these episodes can be huge factors in defining community attributes or identifying community needs. And, as we head into a storm season, it presents a perfect opportunity for community organizations of all sides to impact their neighbourhoods, and provide a great public service. Resident associations can take our view a leading role in making sure their community members are Neighbours aware of the dangers they face due to high winds, heavy rains, need to care snow or other forces of nature. The city should include those for each other residents associations as a key part of emergency planning. One area of the city might be susceptible to flooding. Another area has the potential for toppled trees to create havoc. The potential problems are different for every neighbourhood – and emergency preparedness can be defined by neighbourhood as well. Local organizations are an excellent way to get street-level information out to the people who need it. Most residents associations already have street captains assigned to hand out newsletters and collect membership dues. They could also be the first sources on what steps need to be taken to prepare for or deal with emergencies. The street captains will also know of residents who have special needs that might be impacted by such things as a power outage, and can be used as resource by emergency officials. Residents groups can also take a proactive role in dealing with areas of potential danger. For instance, they should be charged with stressing the importance of keeping trees healthy and creating a list of potentially dangerous trees. And it might provide a significant and appreciated way for organizations to raise their profile and importance in the neighbourhoods of Toronto. Residents associations, community centres and local schools can all contribute to emergency planning. All of Toronto’s official organizations, including police, fire, EMS and hydro crews, did a great job in preparing for this week’s bad weather associated with Sandy. We can make that even better by using the great amount of knowledge and power held by our own resident associations. Toronto Community News is a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. To the editor: Mayor Rob Ford has made mountains of right-wing media coverage over his insistence the city is divided – the downtown versus the suburbs. If this is true, then a good mayor would focus on down playing this and addressing it, not expanding it and fueling the fire. The mayor must focus on getting transit to all areas of the city in an affordable and sustainable manner. Ford has done nothing but cry and shout ‘I want it my way.’ All he has done is waste time and money. Stop focusing on changing the agreements that were in place. Ford has wasted two years of construction time. Transit is a major economic ingredient and surface transit is a good way to open those stores that sit unused. Passengers on subways see blank walls whereas on the surface you see places to shop, eat and be entertained. Economic development is not an underground thing. Glenn Kitchen
Toronto casino both beneficial, detrimental
T
oronto’s city manager Joe Pennachetti has upped the ante on the question of whether to allow a casino in Toronto’s borders this week. In a report to Mayor Rob Ford’s Executive Committee which meets next week, Pennachetti indicates serious economic benefits to both Toronto as a whole, and more critically, the City of Toronto’s hungry coffers. As a whole, a big casino would create some jobs, and also threaten some jobs — particularly at the Woodbine Racetrack in Etobicoke — but on balance, create more than it destroyed. And with the right deal, Pennachetti says a large casino resort could all but eliminate the city’s structural deficit. If it’s located at the Canadian National Exhibition, and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming
THE CITY
david nickle
Corporation agrees to give Toronto a sweeter deal than other host municipalities, then it could bring in $200 million a year. And that is the range of Toronto’s structural deficit — which is to say, the difference between what it costs to run the city we want, and the conservative estimate of how much money the city can actually collect each year. It’s a compelling argument to raise, given that the city, less than a generation ago, rejected the idea of hosting a casino in a proper referendum. Will it be enough, to
bring the tables and the slot machines to Toronto? It’s tough to say. But one thing for sure is that Pennachetti has framed for Toronto councillors the most interesting kind of moral argument: one with no right solution. Because he’s right: if Toronto bargains hard and extracts a gold-plated deal with the Ontario government, gambling revenues can deliver to Toronto a balanced budget. That would mean that city services that residents value could be sustainably funded, transit could expand as needed rather than as politically expedient. City budget debates could be something other than the triage exercises they’ve become. And yet... that money will be coming from a tainted source: the pockets and savings and mortgages of people who cannot resist
the temptation of those tables, those slots. Casinos do best with the gamblers whose addiction causes them to give up their whole financial lives. It’s a choice that past and present provincial governments have already made, as they’ve built casinos in 24 communities around the province over the past few decades. Those revenues have become part of the bedrock of the Ontario government, and no government has dared look back. Toronto could dip into that pool as well. A great many Torontonians would benefit. A comparatively few number of Torontonians would suffer catastrophic loss. It’s a tough question – a moral question. One way or another, it’s a gamble. n David Nickle is The Villager’s City Hall columnist. His column appears every Thursday.

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Some people who come across glass artist Paula Vandermey’s sculptures admit they’re frightened, even appalled by them – yet they’re not afraid to share their reactions with her. Their words roll off of her like water off a duck’s back in part because Vandermey recognizes some pieces, particularly her earlier work is “visceral,” even “angry.” “I don’t take it personally,” she revealed in a conversation at Latitude 44 Gallery in the Junction. “As long as I can provoke.” Vandermey’s latest efforts will be on display at Latitude 44 as part of a month-long exhibition, Nov. 1 to 30, called ‘How many teeth does a Jack Rabbit have?’ It’s a title that prompts people to inquire what inspired it. Vandermey says she looked to Germanborn painter Carl Haag, whose work delves into the collective self-consciousness using various animal archetypes. Vandermey’s exhibit is full of her own archetypal creations – the jackrabbit and the dog. For example, one of her sculptures has a jackrabbit head and a female body. It’s representative of all the lives that have touched her. Vandermey studied glass at Sheridan College, followed by a stint in England where she earned an honours Bachelor of Fine Arts in glass at the University of Sunderland in the United Kingdom. With familial roots in England, France and Germany, Vandermey felt drawn to Europe where

there is a greater appreciation for art. “My grandfather, he was what they call a ‘colour man,’ a painter who had an eye to match up colours. He had worked for Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle,” said Vandermey. Vandermey’s three-dimensional sculptures combines three techniques, including sand casting, hot glass and kiln casting. She combines these with found objects as part of her creative process. “I break the boundaries as to what is politically correct in glass work,” she said.
Vandermey was recently chosen as one of the top international glass artists in the world by the Best Of Artists Book, Volume 2. Best Of Artists promotes outstanding, present day professional artists from around the world whose work demonstrates style, innovation and uniqueness. The Latitude 44 exhibit comprises a body of work that took three years to complete, 28 pieces – the number of teeth a jackrabbit has. Latitude 44 is located at 2900 Dundas St. W. City to apply protective coating over structure >>>from page 1 “To me, this is a slap in the face,” she wrote. “Hundreds of volunteers donated time and money to rebuild the beloved playground and this is the thank you they get?” Prokopowich said she seized the opportunity to teach her son about respecting his community.

“I only wish that the culprits had learned the same lesson,” she added. No one at the playground last Thursday afternoon, noticed the scribbles, including Michelle Seaton who was there with her two-yearold daughter. She was just happy to hear that no one had defaced the new structure with malicious intent. “Kids are kids,” said Seaton. “They do that kind of thing.” Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette said the city is aware of the graffiti and intends on cleaning it up.
“You have to be careful how you remove it because it’s new wood,” said the councillor. ADVERTORIAL

A parent reported some graffiti written on the newly constructed Jamie Bell playground.
Once the wood has been left to weather, said Doucette, the city will apply a protective coating over the entire structure. “It’s infuriating. It makes you very, very cross,” she said about the markings. Community volunteer co-ordinator of the rebuild Robyn Sorys said she was disappointed to hear about the graffiti, yet realistic. “It’s very hard to prevent graffiti. It’s also to be expected,” she said. “We’ve always had it on the play structure, but the city has always been great about cleaning it up right away.”

Should you insure your pet? Health care costs are rising not only for people but also for their pets. When your pet becomes ill, do you have the available resources to pay for medications, X-rays or even a surgery? Pet owners across Canada are finding that pet insurance is a wise investment. Those who know their pets are covered are more likely to seek care for them, whether for regular check-ups or sick care, and that means healthier pets. A relatively small premium can cover a broad range of illnesses and treatments. There’s an upward trend in the num-
ber of pet owners who are opting to manage their veterinary costs through insurance. They want to make sure their pets always get the best care possible.” What should a pet health insurance policy cover? • Hospitalization • Surgery • Medical Devices • Prescriptions • X-rays • Dental Care • Behavioural Therapy • Alternative Treatments

Diggity Dog and Lonesome Kitty Feline and Canine Day Spa & Hotel offers a comprehensive service that cares for your pets during your vacation in a fully equipped and fully staffed, home-style environment. Cats are kept completely separate from dogs. Leaving your feline friend at home alone, only to be visited once or twice a day, could lead to unpleasant circumstances. Your cat could escape from the house, be locked out, or take ill without anyone knowing about it. At Lonesome Kitty, your cat will not always be kept caged but will be given the opportunity to roam free in a unique spacious recreation area. Each cat is given its own individual condo, supplied with its own litter box, food, water and lounge area. Well-trained staff keep the hotel and every individual condo spotlessly clean. Feline guests are also brushed and played with every day. A full grooming service is also
