Seeking help with condo renos to Annual ‘Baby It’s Cold accommodate special needs boy Outside’ event returns

Former area mom and boy supported by Runnymede United Church TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com

Ten-year-old Thomas Bourke is excited to ride his bike and play on the sprawling 11 acres of greenspace when he moves with his mom into their new Burnhamthorpe and Mill roads area condo in late November. But first, the family is seeking some angels. The 1,300-square-foot condo needs extensive modifications to accommodate Thomas, who has cerebral palsy. He requires assistance in all mobility and daily living skills, and has difficulty speaking and processing information. Thomas uses a walker and a wheelchair. “A lot of renovations have to take place to accommodate Thomas’ needs...” said his mom Linda Canning. “It’s exciting. It’s daunting. It will be our home. The goal is that it will accommodate Thomas living here for another 20 years. I’m hoping to only do it once.” Canning estimated the condo’s extensive renos will cost approximately $40,000. The single mom said she is hoping to offset about $15,000 of that through business partnerships — in-kind donations of materials and installation, as well as monetary donations and offers of volunteer labour. The condo’s required renos are extensive. Open concept space is needed for Thomas’ wheelchair and constant supervision. The den will be opened up to allow a dedicated “gross motor” exercise space. The main bathroom and doorway, and Thomas’ bedroom doorway, must be increased for accessibility.

Thomas Bourke and his mom Linda Canning share a special moment. The family is moving to condo in November that will require renovations to make it more accomodating for his cerebral palsy.

The condo’s storage room must be enlarged to accommodate Thomas’ equipment. The home’s carpets are to be replaced with cork to accommodate Thomas’ wheelchair and provide a safe, non-slip, soft, warm surface for Thomas’ walking and crawling exercises. Len McAuley, owner of Pollocks Home Hardware on Roncesvalles Avenue has agreed to donate all the paint to the project. Canning took possession of her condo two weeks ago. She hired contractor Paul McAloon of McAloon Home Improvements, who is contributing the services of a designer. “This is a very different project that I’m very keen to work on and motivated to help with,” McAloon said. “I want to create it right to meet Thomas’ needs and get them right.

Working with a designer will help, so I offered at my cost, to help make their home not only functional but comfortable too.” McAloon has helped Canning identify specific needs of the project that could be contributed, including: flooring (and installation), kitchen and bath products, storage organization and doors, as well as service and labour of same. All financial contributions will help offset labour costs. Mom and son rented a large home on Martin Grove Road for the past 12 years. Soon it will be demolished to make way for a rebuild. Not one to shy away from a challenge, Canning said she sees the move as positive. “I think it will be a nice community for Thomas,” she said, noting the condo has an indoor and outdoor pool. “I’ve always kind of leapt into things with the best of intentions and expectations. “I need a bit of help here. I’ve never done a capital project before. I’ve never fundraised for a capital project before.” But Canning is no stranger to doing all she can to support her son to live life to his fullest capacity. Since age two, Thomas has attended Academy of Conductive Education, a twice-weekly integrated rehabilitation program at Ontario March of Dimes in East York that teaches Thomas functional movement while working on cognitive and speech goals. The education is neuromuscular; engaging Thomas’ muscles in a physical way while also engaging him mentally. It costs $12,000 a year. But community donors come through each year to support Thomas through the Hope for Thomas Fund founded in 2007 by Runnymede United Church. Recently, Thomas and his team ran in the Toronto Waterfront Marathon and raised $9,500 toward his education exceeding their goal.

A

fter recent events in Quebec and Ottawa saw the killing of two Canadian military personnel, and an attack on Parliament Hill, it is important to remember that soldiers continue to serve our country every day – both at home and abroad. Torontonians went to the polls Oct. 27 to elect a mayor and city councillors who will govern our city for the next four years. With Remembrance Day taking place this Tuesday it’s beholden to Torontonians to remember what those who serve this country are fighting for – the right for democracy allowing every single one of us to vote for our elected officials, and to stand up for what we believe in as a country, province and city. This sentiment has been said before, perhaps every Remembrance Day, and in the pages of this newspaper – but with the recent election and a federal election in 2015, it is a sentiment worth repeating. our view Voter turnout increased for the 2014 municipal election – Use your right more than 60 per cent of those to be involved eligible cast their ballots – and is something we should strive and be heard to do each and every election. Engagement pays respect to those who fought for our right to engage in politics. But once you’ve cast your vote – whether you liked the outcome or not – it is not time to stand still. Your vote continues, your opinion continues, and your ability to impact policy and decisions continues. If all you do is cast a ballot but do little else over the next four years, then it was all for naught. Participate in town halls, call your councillor, join a residents’ or community association and let your voice be heard. With each military mission Canada has engaged in – including the most recent one against ISIS – our country offers up its military family to fight for freedom. Not just ours, but the freedom of other countries and innocent people. Voting is a sometimes dangerous endeavor in many countries. For us it is simple: go to a polling station and participate. No worry, no danger. We owe it to every soldier who fought for our freedom to remain engaged in the political future of our country, province and our city.

Tory must get his executive committee right

I

t is a quiet time at Toronto City Hall this week. With the new council weeks away, radio silence seems to be the watchword. In at least the first part of the week, Tory took some time off to recharge after a long campaign. If councillors have heard from him or his team about their roles in the new administration, they’re not talking about it. The mayor-elect did tell a local radio show that he would hope to noticeably improve traffic congestion by early 2015. But he’s going to have to deal with another congestion issue a little bit sooner than that: namely, deciding the shape of his executive committee. Case Ootes, who’s heading up Tory’s transition team, wouldn’t speculate on how that committee would find its shape, but he did acknowledge that

david nickle the city the committee would be no good if its members didn’t help Tory implement his agenda. Getting this one right is crucial. The question is, what kind of ‘right’ is right for John Tory? When Ootes helped Rob Ford make an executive committee four years ago, the two came up with a membership that was entirely suburban, mostly male and of a single mind politically. Councillors from the former City of Toronto and most of the women on council were on the outside. That composition suited the Ford administration as he wasn’t elected on a mandate of conciliation, and a divided council suited his style.

Tory’s playing a different game. He’s billed himself as a city-healer. If that promise is going to bear fruit, he’s going to have to reach across the aisle. Not altogether, of course: if reliable city hall conservatives like Denzil Minnan-Wong don’t find a place on Tory’s executive, then the city is truly out of joint. And it is unlikely that just-as-reliable progressives like Gord Perks would be either eager to participate or welcome on a Tory executive committee. But there are plenty of voices who have spent time on the outside this past term that might find a seat inside on this one. Ward 15’s Josh Colle, Ward 22’s Josh Matlow, Ward 27’s Kristyn Wong-Tam all sit at various removes from Tory’s fiscally conservative, socially liberal realm of politics. Shelley

The question is, what kind of ‘right’ is right for John Tory?

Carroll from Ward 33 is like many of Tory’s supporters, a card-carrying Liberal but over the past four years a persistent opponent of the Ford agenda. Will Ootes recommend councillors like these to round out the committee and extend Tory’s reach? Or will he, and Tory, pick a more consistent core of supporters? It might be a good survival strategy to hunker down. But there is a difference between survival and success – and we will see in the coming weeks whether Tory and his team know what that is.

The Swansea Town Hall will commemorate its own men who gave their lives – and all who gave their lives – during the First World War, during a Remembrance Day ceremony Tuesday, Nov. 11. The service will also honour all those who served in peacekeeping missions and those who have sacrificed themselves for Canada. With the holidays right around the corner, construction bins are popping up around Bloor West Village. The kitchen is the heart of the home, and while residents prepare to host friends and families many kitchen renovations are underway. Local residents and owners of Instyle Kitchens and Bathroom, Michael Lamarche and Gerry Turino, have been renovating in the area for over 12 years. With over 400 completed local renovation projects they have strong support from past clients who are now acting as references for their renovations of local kitchens, bathroom, basements, additions and large custom homes. Many of their past clients will invite new clients over for a quick tour of their completed work, giving Instyle a gold seal of approval. At Instyle, every project is treated as top priority. “A constant complaint we hear from local residents is how they hired a contractor to do what seemed to be a straight forward project and instead of taking three to four weeks to complete it, ended up dragging on for six to 12 months,” says Turino, a Master Electrician,

Master builder and a Kitchen and Bath Designer. “Just have a look around the area, the lawn sign goes up and it’s still there six months later.” With many successful projects behind them, Lamarche and Turino have the necessary experience needed to complete any project, big or small, on budget and on time. Just ask one of their many former clients. At Instyle Kitchens and Bathrooms, customers are provided with a one-stop shopping experience for a stress-free home renovation. When you make the initial phone call to 416-8334343, a free in house consultation and quotation will be set up. At the meeting you’ll view

a slide show of past, local projects. Then, a general ballpark figure is given based on your project discussions. At a later date, you will be invited to the local showroom at 361 Jane St. (near Annette) to select all material cabinetry, countertops, backsplash, flooring, electrical, and plumbing for your dream kitchen and bathroom. Instyle also handles all kitchen cabinet layouts drawings, and permits. At the end of this second appointment, Instyle will present an accurate cost for the project with a clear start and finish date. If you are planning a kitchen, bathroom or basement renovation please call 416-833-4343 or visit their website www.ikb.ca

Inspirational event features Hadfield JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Future Possibilities for Kids (FPK) typically focuses on empowering youngsters aged nine through 12 by showing them what’s possible. The organization’s upcoming Ready, Set, Inspire! event, however, will offer up words of wisdom for adults. Ready, Set, Inspire! is an FPK fundraiser, and it brings exceptional thinkers and leaders to the fore to highlight some of the keys to their success. This year’s event will feature astronaut and former International Space Station commander Chris Hadfield,

City of Toronto chief planner Jennifer Keesmat and Purpose Capital co-founder and managing director Assaf Weisz. “The Ready, Set, Inspire! speakers exemplify the qualities and values we emphasize in the program,” said FPK board chair Mark Landers. “Our goal is to get children to think about their future, think bigger, set goals and change the world.” Landers said more than 50 guest speakers were nominated for the event, which made it difficult to whittle the candidates down to three. All three, however, were extremely worthy choices. “Besides his success as an

astronaut, Chris has done a lot of work raising awareness of math and sciences and promoting their importance,” Landers said. “Jennifer’s gone from an important role in planning to doing TED Talks and promoting strong communities, while Assaf, for a young gentleman, is very accomplished in his approach to social thinking.” Ready, Set, Inspire! will take place in the Toronto Reference Library’s Bram and Bluma Appel Salon from 6:30 to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12.

Four items John Tory needs to make a priority DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com

REPAIRING A BUILDING A CITY CITY – AND COUNCIL – DIVIDED WHERE ‘NO ONE IS LEFT BEHIND’ RELATIONS wLEADERSHIP: wDIVERSITY: wINTER-GOVERNMENTAL

ON BECOMING UNSTUCK wTRANSPORTATION:

In just weeks, John Tory will be taking over the job of mayor from Rob Ford – becoming amalgamated Toronto’s fourth mayor. Voters have handed Tory a fractured and fractious city government whose problems will require complex solutions. We’ve spent nearly 10 months listening to the promises Tory hopes will resolve those issues: transportation gridlock, a lack of leadership, a divided council and a weakened position with other levels of government. Voters also expressed some expectations. Forty per cent of those who voted want to see Tory keep his promises. Sixty per cent expressed wishes and hopes that Tory didn’t address: worries about child care and children’s nutrition, and higher-order transit in corners of the city not addressed by Tory’s plan. If Tory is to successfully unite Toronto as he’s promised, he’s going to have to speak to all those expectations. Here’s what we’ll be watching for:

Soon-to-be-former Mayor Rob Ford’s approach to politics has served to widen those divisions to the point that normal channels of leadership all but collapsed in late 2013 and were replaced by a provisional government barely held together by the straining goodwill of city councillors. This term offers an opportunity to begin anew, with a new mayor who has run expressly on his ability to lead and build consensus. In a 10-point code of conduct, Tory pledged to treat his colleagues, his office and his constituents with respect. That’s a good start, but Tory will have to not only build the base of political support on council he needs in order to put his agenda into effect, he will have to deal with a council traumatized by four years of unprecedented division. City-wide, Tory must deal quickly with the reality that for much of Scarborough and Etobicoke, he is a second choice. Voters there made it clear they feel downtown ‘elites’ like Tory don’t represent their needs and desires. Fixing our broken city is bound to be a fundamental task.

Toronto has spent the last decade stuck; whether behind the wheel of a car, in a bus shelter on a wind-swept road, or waiting to pack onto a crowded subway. All three main candidates in the 2014 mayoralty race put forward ways to relieve that congestion. Toronto voters expect Tory to come through on some big promises: he’s got to get his SmartTrack plan on the rails quickly in order to meet his self-imposed schedule of a fully operational frequentservice surface rail line stopping at 22 stations in Scarborough, Liberty Village and Etobicoke. Tory has pointed to this infrastructure plan as not only a way to meld the city together geographically but also socio-economically, giving Torontonians a way to connect with employment regardless of the neighbourhoods in which they live. Tory has also said he will make a point of personally ensuring that disruptive road repairs will be conducted efficiently and with an eye to maintaining traffic flow; that he will construct fully separated bike lanes at a reasonable pace to improve safety for cyclists.

Tory takes charge of a city increasingly divided between richer and poorer neighbourhoods, and where many new Canadians and people with disabilities do not think they have the same chance to participate. South Asian business groups told Tory companies led by first- and second-generation Canadians don’t think city hall has a fair process for awarding contracts. Tory didn’t think that was a conscious exclusion on the city’s part. But he said he’d make certain one such business was placed on each short list for city contracts. Tory said he’d urge Ontario’s professions to accept more foreign-trained candidates, and suggested doing more to integrate Toronto’s ethnic chambers of commerce with mainstream bodies such as Toronto and Region Board of Trade. Tory doesn’t agree the city should force its contractors and suppliers to hire or train people from disadvantaged areas of the city, or visible minorities or persons with disabilities. Tory told an audience of people with disabilities he would be a powerful advocate for them if elected.

Tory has cast himself as the ‘chief salesperson’ Toronto has lacked for four years, a leader with a personal reputation strong enough to ‘sell, sell, sell’ his city to the world. Tory, as co-chair of the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance, a body trying to bring jobs to Toronto, and as former CEO of the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance, has thought about what Greater Toronto needs as a region – not just a city and its sprawling suburbs – to compete against the world’s other city regions. Preparing to retire this year, city manager Joe Pennachetti said protecting core services residents want depends on getting the province to resume its former policy of funding half of TTC’s operating costs, and persuading both federal and provincial governments repair and expand Toronto’s affordable housing stock. If the other governments won’t relieve those big financial pressures, Toronto must look for new revenue sources to scrape up the money, Pennachetti said. How would Tory convince the other governments to permanently shift large sums to the city’s coffers?

Remembrance Day is a tradition to share across generations Many children know that Remembrance Day is a solemn time to commemorate soldiers’ achievements and sacrifices and to pay respect to solders who died in battle. But they might not know the significance behind the poppy or why we commemorate on November 11. Here is a brief history of some Remembrance Day traditions to share with the kids.

Armistice Day Remembrance Day was once known as Armistice Day because it marks the signing of the armistice that put an end to the hostilities of World War I. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year, guns fell silent

after more than four years of continuous warfare between the Germans and Allied troops. The armistice agreement was signed in a French train carriage at 11 a.m.

Remembrance Day evolution Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day after World War II to commemorate soldiers from both world wars. It is now used as a way to pay hommage to any fallen soldier. In Canada, official national ceremonies are held at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. Events begin with the tolling of the Carillon in the Peace Tower, during which members of the Canadian Forces participate and congregate at Confederation Square. Similar ceremonies take place

in provincial capitals across the country. Very often moments of silence are offered for lost lives.

What about the poppies? One of the unifying symbols of Remembrance Day is the poppy that is worn to honor lost soldiers. The bold, red color of the flower has become an enduring symbol of those who died so that others may be free. The poppy became a symbol for a specific reason. Some of the most concentrated fighting of World War I took place in Flanders, a region in western Belgium. As a result of the fighting, most signs of natural life had been obliterated from the region, leaving behind mud and not much else. The only living thing to survive was the

poppy flower, which bloomed with the coming of the warm weather the year after fighting in the region had ceased. Poppies grow in disturbed soil and can lie dormant in the ground without germinating. Without the war, they may have never come to the surface. John McCrae, a doctor serving with the Canadian Armed Forces, was moved by the vision of poppies flowering in Flanders and wrote a poem titled “In Flanders Fields.” After the poem was published, it received international acclaim, and the poppy became a popular symbol of those lost in battle. Men traditionally wear the poppy on the left side of the chest, where a military medal would be placed. Women wear it on the right side because

Province to upgrade Union Station rail corridor signalling system The province announced it will spend $273 million to upgrade the Union Station rail corridor’s ancient train signalling system. All told, upgrading the signal system, which will take four years to complete, will cost nearly $366 million with the remaining amount coming from federal government infrastructure funding. The work will improve service in time for the expected doubling of ridership in as soon as a decade, says the regional transit service. The upgrades are expected to begin in 2015.

Nephew bears likeness to his veteran uncle >>>from page 1 been told they share similar personalities. Before shipping out of Montreal with the 87th Grenadier Guards, Boudreau had a hand-coloured photograph of himself made and sent home to his parents, who would never see their oldest child alive again. The 23-yearold was killed in France at the battle of Lens on Aug. 23, 1917. In 2009, Boudreau became the first of his family in more than 90 years to visit his uncle’s final resting place – the Caberet Rouge British cemetery, situated in the Souchez area of the Pas-de-Calais. “It was a pilgrimage for me,” recalled Boudreau, who found Cabaret Rouge not too far from Vimy Ridge. Making his way through the cemetery’s gold and marble archway that serves as a shelter for a book containing the names of those interred beyond the gate, Boudreau found his uncle’s gravestone, one of about half identified by name – the others identified by the inscription, ‘Known

Toothbrushes and toothpaste drive helps children in the Third World West-end Catholic schools ban together LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com When retired teacher Stella Petrone overheard a little girl talking excitedly to her mother about picture day, she was struck with an idea: children in Third World countries would probably like a nice smile, too. The child was missing a tooth and was concerned about how she would look in her photograph, recalled Petrone, who witnessed the interaction between mother and daughter earlier this fall. That’s what prompted her to reach out to her former colleague, St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School teacher Steve De Quintal, with whom she had travelled with on school trips to Haiti for years, about her idea for a toothbrush and toothpaste drive. “The idea caught fire,” De Quintal told The Villager. “The

idea that, for picture day, we could have the kids bring in toothbrushes and toothpaste.” As it happened, Petrone had overheard the picture day conversation after she had just driven by the Mississauga warehouse of the Canadian Food For Children (CFFC) charity founded by self-described Catholic, Dr. Andrew Simone. When not running his dermatology clinic, Simone is at the CFFC warehouse, the charity he, wife Joan and friend Shari Fazekas founded at the urging of Mother Teresa. In 1975, the couple radically changed their lifestyle, giving all their possessions away, keeping only the family home to accommodate their 13 children, plus the dozens of foster kids they’ve taken in over the years. A meeting with Father Frank West in 1980 helped focus their efforts. He approached the couple asking

if they would help Mother Theresa – they agreed. Six months later, the Nobel Peace Prize winning nun wrote them a letter praising the couple for their work and requested they send food to famine-stricken areas of Africa. “God love you for what you do for Jesus in the distressing disguise of the poor. Our people in Tanzania and Ethiopia are hungry, so please...see how fast you can get the food to our sisters for our poor,” she wrote. “To send money is not good, as there is no food to buy – but in your country, there is plenty.” Involved schools include: Loretto College, St. Helen’s school, St. Mary’s, St. Vincent De Paul Catholic School and Notre Dame Catholic School in the east end. The CFFC warehouse is at 1258 Lake Shore Rd. E. Donations can be dropped off Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. and noon. – files from Cynthia Reason

In addition to playing bass in the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) since 1980, musician Timothy Dawson is one of the founders of the chamber music group The Bach Consort. As part of the TSO, Dawson said the musicians don’t get a lot of opportunity to play music by J.S. Bach. “We really play music by more modern composers – music that’s 200 years old as opposed to more than 300 years old,” Dawson told The Villager. This is one of the reasons why the Bach Consort was created. “It’s really incredible music that’s rarely performed,” Dawson said. After an hiatus, The Bach Consort is back with its latest offering ‘Giving Bach to the Community J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Weihnachtsoratorium BWV 248’ on

The Bach Consort including Tim Dawson, left, Julie Ranti and Keith Atkinson, plays a concert at Runnymede United Church Nov. 28.

Friday, Nov. 28 at Runnymede United Church. Proceeds from ticket sales will go toward the Toronto Symphony Volunteer Committee Education Program and Open Table Community Meal at Runnymede United Church. Since its inception two decades ago,

the Consort has raised as much as $400,000 for various charities, including Camphill Village Ontario, L’Arche Daybreak, Out of the Cold, Settlement House Music and Arts School, Music at St. John’s, Delisle Youth Services, Habitat for Humanity, On the Move (Addus), the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, the United Church of Canada Beads of Hope Campaign, Project Work, Eva’s Initiatives, Pia Bouman School for Ballet and Creative Movement, the TSO Adopt-a-Player Programme and many others. The Consort features some of Canada’s most accomplished classical instrumentalists and vocal soloists, said Dawson, like Monica Whicher, Allyson McHardy, Lawrence Wiliford, Colin Ainsworth and Russell Braun. “It’s serious music, but how we approach is not in a serious way,” Dawson said. “The musicians are there because they love it.”

Advance tickets are on sale now for $50 ($60 at the door). “It’s a really good bang for your buck and it all goes to charity,” he said. “It’s always a lot of fun.” The upcoming performance marks what the Consort hopes will be an annual performance of the Christmas Oratorio – “it’s a neglected piece in North America. It’s performed in Europe, but not here,” he said. It brings together freelance musicians, members of the TSO and the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra, and internationally renowned soloists. Maestro Johannes Debus, music director of the Canadian Opera Company, will lead the Consort. Growing up in Germany, he sang this work as a chorister many times, Dawson said. Runnymede United Church is at 432 Runnymede Rd. For tickets and for further details, visit www.torontobachconsort.com
