Skating on playing dress up Grenadier Pond could become legal despite risks

motriadzulynsky@trebnet.com

DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Skating on the sometimes dangerous surface of Grenadier Pond could become legal when it freezes a year from now, but skaters will do so at their own risk, and only be warned to stay off the ice when city staff are certain it will break under their weight. That is the recommendation from the city’s Parks and Environment Committee, as members considered various plans for dealing with the popular skating spot. While city staff have maintained for more than a decade the ice on the pond in High Park is not safe enough for skating, during last winter’s deep freeze hundreds of skaters defied a no-skating bylaw and took to the ice anyway. >>>red, page 11

It was a homecoming of sorts, Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders told the audience at

a community safety forum at Joseph J. Piccininni Community Centre Monday. Toronto’s top cop joined senior officers from 11, 12 and 13 divisions for the forum.

Saunders was once commander of 12 Division. It was hosted by Davenport Councillor Cesar Palacio and attended by newly elected Davenport MP Julie Dzerowicz.

“(Last year this time former) chief Bill Blair was in my position now and some of the leaders here were in my position,” he told the dozens of community members who attended

the safety town hall. “Toronto is still the safest urban city in North America to live,” said Saunders, who was appointed chief of police >>>police, page 6
