It is important that, with a legacy of improved transit, we add to the livability of communities in which we work and serve,” said Metrolinx spokesperson Malon Edwards. “Public art is an opportunity to add to the fabric of a community through an engaging artistic display.” >>>INSTALLATIONS, page 18

The Baby Point Gates Business Improvement Area is working on creating a new parkette along Methuen Avenue at Jane Street, south of Annette Street. The parkette is tentatively scheduled for completion in summer of 2015.

BIA plans parkette to combat graffiti and illegal parking LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The Baby Point Gates Business Improvement Area (BIA) is in the midst of a project to create a new parkette along Methuen Avenue at Jane Street, just south of Annette Street. The site is currently a “graffiti magnet,” according to BIA vice-chair Dennis Maslo, and the curb is configured in such a way that it invites drivers to park there even though the space is an illegal spot and can result in a $40 ticket. It’s the largest space within the BIA’s boundaries and is crying out for some attention, Maslo told The Villager. “We need a community space that looks good where people can stop for coffee,” he said. The BIA unanimously accepted the parkette com-

mittee’s design concept at its board meeting last week. A perspective illustration can be viewed on the organization’s website. Over the next several weeks, the BIA will collaborate with landscape architects Forest and Field to add layers of details, such as plant and material types and pattern selections. “We’re pretty thrilled with how the design is looking and what the parkette will do for the community,” Maslo said. The goal is to create an oasis of greenery with seating and a water fountain. It’ll be a spot to decorate with Christmas lights and a place for bands to play during such events as the BIA’s sidewalk sales. Residents are invited to submit suggestions for the parkette’s name. “Methuen Avenue Parkette

is highly functional, but obvious isn’t always the way to go,” Maslo said. The tentative goal is to have the parkette built in late summer of 2015. If you have any name suggestions, email them to dmaslo@ babypointgates.ca The BIA hosts its Annual General Meeting Nov. 5 at the High Park Day School, 291A Jane St., starting at 7 p.m. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. There will be some seats available on the board (these are only available to merchants and commercial property owners within the BIA’s boundaries), Maslo said. Baby Point Gates hosts a fall sidewalk sale and open house Saturday, Nov. 15.

Heintzman Place featured in Green 13’s sustainable buildings tour Saturday LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Many people tracked the progress of the new condominium complex as it was being built at the former Canadian Tire site at Dundas West and Keele streets. What most likely don’t

know is that it’s not your typical condominium development. “It looks like a regular building,” said Paul Mero, a member of the local environmental advocacy group Green 13. “But there are solar panels on the roof. The solar panels pre-heat the boilers in

the building reducing the cost of heat by 30 per cent.” Because the developer of Heintzman Place, Options for Homes, is a non-profit corporation, its mission is to provide a low carrying cost to maximize the cost-effectiveness of its suites, Mero said. Heintzman Place boasts

several sustainable features in addition to solar thermal heating, like an energy recovery ventilator. Heintzman Place will be part of a Green 13-led tour of organizations, businesses and homes that are striving for a more efficient, sustainable and livable neighbourhood

showcased Saturday, Oct. 4 for Green Energy Doors Open. It’s a province-wide showcase of individual, community and commercial sustainable energy projects initiated in 2011 by the Ontario Sustainable Energy Association. Included in Green 13’s

Green Energy Doors Open event will be Loblaws on Dundas Street West, just west of Jane Street. Quietly, the store installed solar panels that generate 135 kilowatts of energy, Mero said.

T

he power of social media is too often taken for granted. It allows an easy avenue for people to cast judgment in a way they can’t in person. It takes no effort and yet, the consequences of that stone cast can be devastating. Last week a woman wrote a post on her facebook page complaining about a rude transit rider on a TTC bus who wouldn’t move his bag to let her sit down. He swore at her, made an obscene gesture and allegedly stomped on her foot. She also posted a photo of the man she took with her phone. The post went viral and was viewed thousands of times in only a few hours. People were outraged. As happens when things go viral, media picked it up and once our view the the story broke, another transit came forward with a video Taking revengerider of the interaction. It was posted YouTube and some said they’d out online has to try to find the man dubbed the ripple effect ‘transit leprechaun’ because of the bowler hat and green shirt he was wearing. It was public shaming the only way social media can deliver it: fast, brutal and with little to no consequence of its impact. Thousands of angry people with their finger pointed at one man. We’re not writing in defence of this transit rider. Rather, we hope to caution people before they cast judgment in such a public sphere. Things have a way of sticking online. Everything is public. Don’t trust your privacy settings. Consider the TTC driver who lost her job this summer after a video was posted showing her bus running a red light and nearly hitting a pedestrian. Before anyone knew anything about her, she was publicly shamed in a similar manner. After it was discovered she was a single mom of two and that she lost her job over the incident, the man who posted the video said if he had known that would have been the consequence, he never would have made it public. Whatever this man’s done, his punishment has surely been dealt. We may not know him, but certainly his friends, family and employer have recognized him by now. Perhaps he’s deserved this, perhaps he just made a mistake. It’s not for us to say – but when it’s said online, it speaks deafening volumes.

Imagining what Doug Ford as mayor would be like

J

ohn Tory is to be the next mayor of Toronto. All the polls point to this as the likely outcome and have for some time. So why, then, don’t we all just relax, enjoy the fall season of new television and wait for an affable and uneventful four years? Well, for one thing, there are still three-anda-half weeks to go until election day, and anything could happen. And for another, based on the polls, the second-most-likely thing to happen is that Doug Ford somehow wrestles the lead away from Tory and is elected the fourth mayor of an amalgamated Toronto. It is not such a remote possibility; those same polls that show Tory so far ahead show the label-making councillor for Ward 2 in second place. And most of them were taken when Ford was behaving – how shall we put this? – like a bit of a jerk. If Ford puts on his candidate pants, keeps it civil

david nickle the city and plays it right, a Ford mayoralty is a possibility. How would we cope with such an eventuality? Well, we can look back at his brother’s victory four years ago – where many of us simply stared slack-jawed as Don Cherry kicked of the inaugural council meeting and Rob Ford announced the end of light rail transit. Some happy few of us simply hoped for the best. No doubt they slept better, dreaming of stalled gravy trains and tax cuts and shining subways. In that spirit, I thought today we might, as a (positive) though experiment, imagine what the very best possible scenario is for a Doug Ford mayoralty. So, looking on the bright, halffull-not-half-empty side of life, we might hope for a few things: r We’ll likely see longer press availabilities and

more of them. Unlike his younger brother, Doug Ford has not been shy about talking, and sometimes hollering, in front of cameras. There will never be a question of asking Mayor Doug Ford the wrong question. All the questions will be wrong, and he will tell us why. r The Ferris wheel will be back. Well, maybe not the Ferris wheel, but expect something similarly big on the waterfront to the idea that Councillor Doug Ford floated in 2011. Maybe a Colossus of Rhodes bestriding the mouth of the Humber? No, let it be a surprise. r Toronto will have a new music festival, and it will be just like the ones Doug Ford saw when he visited Austin, Texas, and came back with Lone Stars in his eyes. Ford was pretty clear about this at the debate on the arts Monday. We might even get a new city motto out of it: Keep Toronto Weird, anyone? r We will all learn to

love Sigma Six — or at least figure out what it is. r The entertaining trench warfare that has come to characterize Toronto City Council meetings will continue, with a small reshuffling that will keep all of us guessing. While Doug Ford’s election is a long-shot, Rob Ford’s election in Ward 2 is nearly a certainty. The brothers Ford will still be manning the turret in the bunker that the mayor’s office has become. Council will still be fed up with them both. It will be fun, in the way that we’ve come to define fun over the past four years. So there you have it. Keep happy, Toronto, sleep well. If the pollsters are as wrong as they sometimes can be... you can always learn to stop worrying and love the Ford. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Say no to Line 9, says reader 10 BLOOR WEST VILLAGER | Thursday, September 25, 2014 |

To the editor: Re: ‘Line 9,’ Exclusive, Sept. 25. I cannot believe that many residents are unaware of Line 9. I have read about it and marched against it. I am aware that an oil spill can never be completely cleaned up. Enbridge can promise anything, but if there is a spill... oops! Sorry, won’t eradicate the mess. One article I read stated that the line travelled near a subway station. I try to picture in my mind the disaster that would occur if that line were to burst.

The pipeline enters Etobicoke south of Eglinton Avenue West from Mississauga heading north alongside a portion of Hwy. 401. It then turns east north of Finch Avenue heading eastbound through North York and Scarborough. As it leaves Scarborough’s eastern border it travels through Rouge Park lands. Enbridge spokesperson Graham White said Line 9 has been misrepresented by those opposed to it, and it is not a tarsands oil pipeline. “Line 9 will carry primarily light oil as it did prior to the planned reversal. The destination refineries are ‘light’ refineries and do not have significant capability to refine heavy products like bitumen oil,” he said. However, Enbridge has permitted shippers to transport different oil blends which includes heavier grades such as bitumen. The 38-year-old pipeline could start transporting the heavier grade bitumen as early as December, say some environmental groups. Sa b r i n a Bow m a n , o f Environmental Defence, is skeptical of Enbridge’s assertion that the line will pump mainly light oil. “With the NEB approval they can pump as much of the tarsands oil as they want and we wouldn’t know,” she said. Since the NEB approval, a series of integrity digs on the pipeline have been taking place to help support the planned capacity increase, said White, with one work site being at G. Ross Lord Dam and Park in North York. Environmental groups cite an Enbridge spill that saw 3.3 million litres of oil

go into Michigan’s Kalamazoo River on July 25, 2010 as cause for concern. That spill is estimated to have cost Enbridge more than $1 billion and is reportedly the largest on-land oil spill in U.S. history according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Last December, in light of the growing concerns, Toronto City Council requested Enbridge have an emergency response strategy in place for Toronto in order to minimize the impact of any potential spill. Wa rd 2 4 W i l l ow d a l e Councillor David Shiner has been a part of the city effort to implement safety emergency response plans. At the moment, he said there are no such plans in place in the Greater Toronto Area. “We are trying to make sure Enbridge can make the line as safe as it possibly can make it,” Shiner said. “But the city can only do so much since it’s an issue that needs to be handled at the federal level. The federal government gave permission, but hasn’t pressured Enbridge, as much as the City of Toronto has done to implement safety procedures. Right now the city doesn’t have the capacity to respond to a disaster.” Enbridge filed an Emergency Response Action Plan this past July with the NEB and is waiting for feedback before releasing details about it later this October. Having spoken to communities along Line 9, Environmental Defence said most residents they contacted were unaware of the pipeline and the possibility of it carrying tar sands oil. While White said that between May of 2012 and July of 2013, Enbridge met

If it is true and an oil spill did occur in the vicinity, Toronto’s transportation would come to a halt. Your article omits the fact that Bitumen is like sandpaper.

Imagine that travelling through a pipeline that is 38 years old. It boggles this old mind that after the horrendous spill in Kalamazoo, Michigan, our government would even be considering transporting this danger on us citizens. It is time that we joined together and gave a resounding no to Enbridge for even considering such a drastic move. Unfortunately your article also forgets to tell us just how many breaks have already happened on this line. There have been several. Joy Taylor

Raccoons aren’t the only Rail safety pests to be euthanized comments in the city, reader writes a concern To the editor: I read Toronto council is discussing the possibility of euthanizing raccoons. As a longtime resident of Toronto, I have encountered many raccoons living in my area just waiting to attack me as I put my food waste into the green bin. I just don’t understand why council wants to just include raccoons in their plans. Let’s get rid of squirrels, too. They are forever digging in my garden and making a mess. I have also seen those pesky skunks lurking around at night up to no good. They definitely must go. The worst are the birds. All summer long they have

been doing their business on my lawn furniture. But hey, why stop there. With fall approaching soon, there is nothing more aggravating as raking up leaves. Please Toronto council, can you cut down all the trees, too? Andrea Helen Grace

Veteran municipal politician for Davenport Cesar Palacio is alleging that a canvasser on behalf of rival Ward 17 candidate Alejandra Bravo distributed information to area residents that is “demonstrably false and defamatory.” The 13-page libel notice issued by Palacio’s lawyer, Michael Fenrick, to the Bravo campaign Friday, Sept. 26 indicated that a flyer was distributed to homes in the Caledonia Road and Innes Avenue-area. The flyer purported to list the city councillors who voted for and against Mayor Rob Ford’s proposed 10 per cent cut from the Toronto Public Library budget in 2012, with Palacio listed in favour of the cuts. “The flyer is false, defamatory and seriously damaging to Councillor Palacio’s reputation,” wrote Fenrick in the letter. The vote referenced in the flyer is not in regards to cutting 10 per cent from the Toronto Public Library budget, but rather a vote on whether to transfer

“I have always taken the high road and turned the other cheek when untrue or unfair things have been said about me, but some things are so untrue and hurtful that they cannot simply be ignored,” said Palacio in a statement. “I have served a libel notice against those persons responsible for fabricating my record, and will be referring any requests to speak about this ongoing legal matter to my lawyer.” Bravo stressed the information was not distributed on behalf of her campaign. “It’s unfortunate that Cesar Palacio has turned to legal bullying to silence us,” Bravo told The Villager. Bravo issued a further public response. “This frivolous attempt to silence me is a clear sign that Mr. Palacio is scared of losing his job,” she said. “He’s hearing what we are at the door – an overwhelming desire for change in leadership in Ward 17. I’m surprised that he would turn to this kind of legal bullying – I think he’s been spending too much time with the Ford brothers at city hall.”

Candidates join petition against Line 9 A group of Toronto residents rallying behind the name “Stop Line 9” have organized a municipal campaign to have Toronto City Council to ban tar sands oil from passing through Toronto neighbourhoods. Concerned about the heavier grade oil – bitumen – the group has launched its Protect Our City Pledge initiative approaching city councillors and non-incumbents to sign their petition to prevent the transport of tar sands oil through Enbridge’s Line 9 oil pipeline. The goal of the campaign is to create a bylaw that will prevent “dangerous” products

from being shipped via pipeline or rail through the city. To date, six incumbent councillors and six candidates for council seats have signed the petition. They are: Raymond Desilets, Ward 5 Etobicoke-Lakeshore, Candidate; Sarah Doucette, Ward 13 Parkdale-High Park, Councillor; Alejandra Bravo, Ward 17 Davenport, Candidate; Mike Layton, Ward 19 Trinity-Spadina, Councillor; Joe Cressy, Ward 20 TrinitySpadina Candidate; Joe Mihevc, Ward 21 St. Paul’s, Councillor;

VIDEO ON TRANSIT BUILDING HISTORY A we b v i d e o s e r i e s by the Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario attempts to explain the long, frustrating history of Toronto transit building in a non-partisan manner. The series was produced by transportation consultant David Crowley and features narration by Toronto journalist and transit advocate Stephen Wickens. Its four main parts cover transit history, crowding, the overabundance of transit proposals, and how to take the politics out of planning.

ists. The art submissions were short-listed to four by an initial selection committee comprised of two Metrolinx representatives and one representative from the City of Toronto’s StreetARToronto program. The provincial transit agency sought input from the community during a public meeting June 25 when the shortlisted artists presented their concepts. Based on community feedback, the four finalists then tweaked their final submissions, Edwards said. The winning artists Misha Hunter and Ryan Dineen were chosen using several criteria, including the quality and originality of the artwork, logistics for completing the artwork and community response to the work as well as how well the feedback was reflected in the final artwork.

Metrolinx has partnered with the City of Toronto’s StreetARToronto (StART) program on 14 public art displays along the Georgetown South Project rail corridor.

The selection committee, said Edwards, asked for the expertise of two public art experts to make the final decision. “We had carte blanche to do something that fit the area,” said Hunter, whose studio is in the Junction. “We wanted to do a more modern

contemporary design, a mural with topographic elements.” The mural is comprised of a three-dimensional element made of wood, which has never been done in the city before, said Hunter, who has worked with Business Improvement Areas across

the city. The $1 million project aims to enhance the public realm in the communities along the 20-kilometre stretch of the Georgetown South Project corridor. Hunter and Dineen have worked together for the past decade.

The Joy Oil station’s office and garage were open to the approximately 40 people who toured the building and provided their input as

to what they’d like to see it transformed into. Visitors could vote for their favourite alternative uses from eight panels of proposed ideas. “I wasn’t sure what to expect,” admitted High Park Grenadier Fund volunteer Diana Teal. “It’s an interesting place for people to access. We all felt like (the open house) was a really good start.” The proposed uses that visitors voted for included

children’s programs, walking tour programs, art and music, a welcome centre, shoreline cleanups, environmental stewardship and rentals. People said they wanted to see programs for seniors; a solar power project to heat the building – funded by crowdsource; a local history centre, rentable recreation space for weddings and barbecues, a cafe and a free Wi-Fi area. In 2007, when the city

embarked on the expensive endeavour to move the heritage designated station from the north side of Lake Shore Boulevard across to Sir Casimir Gzowski Park on the western beaches – at a price tag of $400 million – Joy Oil was reportedly to become a snack bar and perhaps a tourist information centre. However, the building still remains untouched. As one of the gas stations built in the 1930s for the Joy

Oil Company Ltd., a Detroitand Cleveland-based firm, the Joy Oil station had established itself as a recognizable image for an era when automotive travel was on the rise. With its circular tower, chateaustyle high-conical roof, it has become one of the city’s many landmarks. The station, designated as a historic site in 1989 by the City of Toronto under the Ontario Heritage Act, is one of the last remaining well-known

gas stations of its kind. The High Park Grenadier Fund will continue to host community consultation events into next year, Teal said. If you did not attend the open house and would like to share your ideas for the Joy Oil station, email info@ highpark.org Have an opinion? Old fashioned care at Baby Point Hardware Baby Point Hardware is a store like no other. Though it only opened its doors on Annette Street two and a half years ago, its wooden floors and tin ceiling evoke a nostalgic feeling of an old-fashioned hardware store from years gone by. Joe learned the ins and outs of the hardware business at an early age, working in his father’s hardware store below their apartment with his brother and four sisters.

40 years later, Joe and his family are carrying on the tradition. He moved his award-winning Hopedale Hardware from Oakville to the Baby Point area where he purchased the 75-year-old building. Now his commute is a few steps down the stairs, from the apartment above the shop where he lives with his wife and daughter. What sets the store apart is the personal service Joe ensures every

customers receives. They will help you find anything you need, and if you can’t find it in the store, Joe will be happy to order it for you. You’ll not only find screws, nuts and bolts by the piece at Baby Point Hardware, but also mops, cookware, meat grinders, seasonal decor like Mr. Christmas, and anything you need for the home. Stop by Baby Point Hardware at 777 Annette St. and experience the old fashioned hardware store service and selection.

Indoor cycling fundraiser supports St. Joseph’s centre The Junction’s RPM Total Fitness is hosting its big indoor ride in support of St. Joseph’s Health Centre Sunday. There is still time to register to take part in the inaugural event, according to Michelle Grace, RPM Total Fitness’ event co-ordinator. The cost is $75 to take part and cyclists must raise a minimum of $250 in pledges for the hospital. “We wanted this to be an opportunity for people who like to cycle, but aren’t comfortable cycling outside,”

Grace said. It was a staff member at the hospital who reached out to the owner of RPM about organizing such an event for St. Joe’s. The two-hour ride takes place between 10 a.m. and noon and will be followed by lunch provided by The Beet organic restaurant nearby. There will be prizes as well. Note that this two-hour spinning event will be the only spinning offered Sunday at the spinning and fitness

studio. RPM physiotherapist, Melanie Sutherland, will also be providing complimentary kinesio-taping before the ride as well as a free stretching station after the ride. To register for the event – the deadline is Friday, Oct. 3 – visit http://bit.ly/1ywQ6d0 Contact RPM Total Fitness, 2968 Dundas St. West, at 416761-9717 or email info@rpmstudio.ca
