Run in the name of St. Christopher House St. Christopher House is calling all runners – and walkers. It is proposing a win-win idea: Participate in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon in support of St. Christopher’s, and the organization will take care of your entry fee. Through the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, which takes place Sunday, Oct. 20, St. Christopher House raises funds to provide programs for the organization that helps pre-school children to seniors. Its neighbourhood cheering section at last year’s event brought in about $25,000, an amount it is hoping to reach again this year, said Lidia Monaco, director of children, youth and family services. “It allows us to connect with people in the community, other marathoners and businesses,” Monaco told The Villager. “It’s a fundraiser that really helps to give

us additional dollars.” If you are interested in running (or walking) in the marathon and raising pledge money for St. Christopher’s, contact 416-5324828. With seven locations in Toronto’s downtown west end, St. Christopher House works in partnership with the community to promote personal and social change, enabling less-advantaged individuals, families and groups to gain greater control over their lives and within their community. Each year, the money raised is allocated for a particular group or initiative at St. Christopher House. In its first year, the Neighbourhood Challenge brought in $9,500. Last year, it was $25,000. “It increases every year,” said Monaco, adding that as many 70

staff members participate in the marathon. The neighbourhood cheering section is in Liberty Village at Strachan Avenue and Lake Shore Boulevard West. No cash accepted here: it’s all about the free market This Saturday, the Really, Really Free Market takes place in Campbell Park, north west of Lansdowne subway station from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. What is the Really, Really Free Market? It’s exactly that – a free market. Got a bag or box of stuff you don’t want? Bring it to the free market, help the volunteers put it out and take anything you fancy, for free. All leftover items will be donated to charities and not-for-profits. New to the area and looking for a few small items for your home? Stop by and scoop up whatever you find. Students’ Doors of Hope on display at Nuit Blanche Contemporary art event to display doors all night from Oct. 5 until sunrise Oct. 6 CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com

ne of the largest collective art projects ever undertaken at Toronto’s Catholic school board – featuring the colourfully creative work of students from 33 different schools across the city – will be on display overnight at this year’s Nuit Blanche contemporary art show next month. Doors of Hope, the brainchild of Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) art resource teacher Maria Tavares and Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School arts department head John Notten, is an exhibition of nearly 140 doors painted by students from the Toronto, Durham, Dufferin-Peel and York Region Catholic district school boards in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Toronto. “We thought the best canvas to sort of represent what the Catholic Charities work embodies would be a door, because doors open up opportunity. When you open up a door you’re letting someone in and providing them with sanctuary and a chance to start again,” Tavares explained, noting participating schools were tasked with supplying their own old doors to use as a canvas. “We used discarded old doors, which served as another metaphor on a different level – one representing a person in need who’s rundown and empty, needing of assistance and to be embraced and loved. We thought once you get that door and you paint a message of hope or an expression of love on it...that’s life rejuvenating the person and giving them new hope and a new outlook.” Last year’s Grade 7 class at St. Cecilia Catholic School, taught by Kathryn Kowalenko, was just one of the participating groups to contribute a door to the project,

which will now be displayed at Nuit Blanche on Oct. 5. “There were a lot of artists in my class, so we got a whole bunch of kids involved. The whole idea sounded amazing, and so we put our heads together and came up with something good,” Kowalenko said. “It really is amazing. submitted to Nuit Blanche was painted by two of Lorusso’s handpicked art students – Jaimee and Melissa – in honour of the good work done at Covenant House on behalf of homeless youth. The piece, entitled Against All Odds, depicts the shelter’s front door, with silk flowers growing out of a crack in the sidewalk. Its young artists, Lorusso said, were inspired by the words of a guest speaker from Covenant House. “They were just so connected to what she was saying about how these teens need help, that right away they said ‘we need to paint Covenant House,’” she said. Doors of Hope – featuring 75 doors from Toronto, 43 from Dufferin-Peel, 13 from York Region and five from Durham – will be on display at Nuit Blanche on the grounds of the University of Toronto’s St. Michael’s College, 81 St. Mary St., and Loretto College, 70 St. Mary St., on Saturday at 6:51 p.m. until sunrise Sunday, Oct. 6. “We really want to invite everyone to embrace our message of hope and come out and celebrate the work of our young students, teachers and board members, without whose support this project wouldn’t have been possible,” Tavares said, giving special thanks to TCDSB superintendents Patrick Keyes, Geoffrey Grant, and Dan Koenig for making the Doors of Hope a reality. “We also want to celebrate the good work of Catholic Charities. Each of the doors, which were created by our students from kindergarten to Grade 12, has its own narrative – and each contains a huge awareness piece. A lot of students didn’t even know that these charities existed before and were so happy to learn that there are people out there to give them and their friends help if they need it.”

herself, we made different compared to other angels – with a bit more attitude. It’s meant to be a different angel than people would expect.” The brick wall, the girls explained, represents schools, while the hands stand for all the children aided by Catholic Charities. While their Door of Hope took about two weeks of hard work to complete – the more than 10 students involved stayed in to paint it over their recesses and after school – the end result, the student artists said, was well worth the sacrifice “I never thought I’d have any art that I worked on in an actual, big art show, so it’s kind of a shock,” said Chloe, noting she and the other girls all plan to head down to Nuit Blanche on Oct. 5 to see their door on display. “My mom’s really proud because she knows I want to be an artist,” added Patricia, who hopes to attend Cardinal Carter Academy of the Arts next year. “It took lots of work and effort, but in the end it turned out really good.” For Sonya Lorusso, a teacher at Etobicoke’s Holy Child teacher, the experience of painting a door in recognition of the good work of the Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Toronto was one that hit home. “It’s something I’m very close to, because I’ve used Catholic Children’s Aid as a behaviour teacher in the past, and they’ve helped us so much in getting our kids to where they needed to be, whether it’s residential treatment, a new home, or just to give them something to brighten their future,” said Lorusso, whose door, entitled A Glimmer of Hope, depicts a little girl from the back, with a golden arm reaching out to touch her shoulder. “It’s holding her up, supporting her and pushing her forward into the future, saying ‘everything is going to be okay.’” Holy Child’s second door

Smoking rules need to be enforceable, measurable

P

rudent health measure or nanny state legislation? When Toronto council meets next month, it is scheduled to consider implementing tough new measures on outdoor smoking in the city. These are recommendations proposed by the city’s board of health in an attempt to curb exposure to secondhand smoke. Of the series of recommendations the board made this week, one of them includes asking council to make it illegal to smoke within nine metres of the entrance to all public buildings in the city. The board of health’s recommendation that sports fields and “specific park amenities” go smoke-free as well needs parks and environment committee approval on Oct. 23 before it can go to council. Other health board recommendations, including the banning of smoking on restaurant patios, would require a change to provincial legislation and can’t be imposed by the city. While the board endorsed the our view recommendations, Mayor Rob Ford has called the plan “nanny Smoking ban state” legislation. When it comes to new legislais for greater tion of any sort, we ask: Is the legislation practical? And is it for good the greater good? On the first question, when it comes to banning smoking within nine metres of a public building, we do question the practicality of enforcing such a law and would like to see specific details of how the city plans to deal with that. On the second question, it’s hard to argue that it isn’t for the greater good. In a report to the board of health last September titled ‘The Burden of Illness from Tobacco in Toronto’, Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown noted tobacco use and second-hand smoke remain the leading causes of preventable death in Canada. In Toronto, adult smoking rates have “seen a slowed decline since 2001,” the report said, suggesting expanded tobacco control is needed to further reduce the risks posed from second-hand smoke. The proposals announced this week stem from McKeown’s report. What council must do is ensure the new measures are enforceable and measurable. “The history of trying to reduce the harm caused by smoking in Toronto is one of incremental measures,” McKeown said this week, acknowledging a total ban on smoking is “not a practical objective in the short term.” It’s Toronto council’s job to ensure this next step in the interest of public health is the right one.

Ford bypassing meat of the matter to focus on gravy

M

ayor Rob Ford was unusually boisterous on Monday when he faced reporters alongside a crowd of music industry executives to talk about his trip to Austin, Texas. I suspect it wasn’t just the prospect of visiting the Lone Star State that had him going. The real boost likely came from the matter of the Pan Am Games over-expenditures, and the afterglow of the scandal of the $2,500-abum councillors’ chairs. The chairs were ordered by an unnamed staff person; actually replicas of the chairs they were replacing: chairs that had been propping up councillors, mayors and their guests since the early 1960s when Toronto City Hall was built. Last week, Ford apologized for the purchase – coming in at some $75,000 in total – and strongly implied the person responsible for the purchase had been sacked.

david nickle the city On Monday, Ford suggested the same thing should happen to Pan Am Games CEO Ian Troop, if he can’t adequately explain a heap of questionable expenses filed by himself and his staff as they set about cobbling together the 2015 games. This is high-fibre feed for Ford, and the movement to re-elect him in 2014. Ford campaigned in 2010 with the simple promise to “stop the gravy train”. To illustrate his point, he held up outgoing Toronto Centre-Rosedale councillor Kyle Rae’s decision to spend $12,000 from his office budget on a farewell party for himself. In the total context of Toronto’s nearing $10-billion budget, $12,000 didn’t amount to much of a hit. But it surely made a difference to Ford’s fortunes in

the polls, turning Toronto Council’s perennial outsider into its preeminent insider. That’s a transformation that’s hard to repeat, but it’s the trajectory a Ford re-election campaign will almost certainly follow. Indeed, the mayor is already set up to do so. Council has long ago taken control of the municipal agenda away from Ford, setting its own budgets and carving out its way on transit. Next week, council will probably ignore the mayor’s wishes on the appointment of a caretaker councillor for Ward 3 in Etobicoke. Going into the next election, Ford is firmly on the outside. But just as Rae’s taxpayer-funded party was the key in 2010, so might these new examples of the ugly confluence of privilege and profligacy unlock the door to a second Rob Ford mayoralty. And the fact that neither of these are necessarily the best examples won’t

deter him. The decision to purchase the chairs at such expense may look bad on the surface. But Toronto City Hall is a historically significant building, and the councillors’ lounge behind the chamber is a significant part of that. Similarly, the Pan Am Games is a significant civic and national enterprise, one that will bring benefits to the city’s economy and infrastructure. And if its executives are wellcompensated, and take advantage of their expense accounts according to the rules... well, once again, it’s part of being in the game. But that doesn’t matter in retail politics. Rae’s use of his office budget to throw a farewell bash was all done according to the rules, too. It still riled voters enough to elect Rob Ford mayor of Toronto. And if it worked before, well, why not again?

‘Junk’ trees come down in High Park in off-leash area City creating new path near allotment gardens LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Much to dog owner Diana Meredith’s dismay, she came upon work crews in the off-leash area of High Park cutting down trees last week near the allotment gardens. “Why are they coming down,” Meredith wondered. According to City of Toronto signs, she learned some trees were being removed to make room for a new path near the allotment gardens. However, to her, Meredith said the trees looked healthy. “My understanding is, they were going to get rid of the lower path to have more room for quote ‘nature.’ But, they’ve gone right through the middle of the forest,” she said referring to the construction crew. “This morning, (Tuesday, Sept. 24), there were people

out with chainsaws. It looks like they’re clear-cutting – what is the point?” The Lansdowne Avenue and Bloor Street West-area resident and her husband are regulars in High Park. One of them is in the park every day to walk their sixyear-old pet. David Nosella, supervisor of capital projects with the city, explained the situation, saying crews are working to close off an existing trail and create a new one in its place. “The purpose is to preserve some more important trees along the trail and get rid of some junk species,” Nosella told The Villager. The work is part of the second phase of a project in the off-leash area of High Park. The work was originally scheduled for completion this month, however, staff had to redesign a portion of the steps so the work will

take a little bit longer. The off-leash improvement project includes the creation of a new off-leash trail around the allotment gardens and will include the installation of a new metal staircase on the ravine embankment. The construction has occurred in stages. In order to allow construction equipment to operate without compromising public safety, sections of the trail system have had to be closed during construction. Park Off-leash cleanup saturday wHigh

The High Park off-leash area fall cleanup is scheduled for Saturday starting at 10 a.m. on Dog Hill. Two cleanups are required each year – one in autumn before the leaves fall and one in winter after the snow melts – to maintain High Park’s offleash status. Participants are asked to

Recent Ryerson Theatre Performance Production graduate Tracy Lam has been tasked to create one of the lead characters in the Lower Ossington Theatre’s presentation of Dreamworks’ stage hit, Shrek the Musical. Lam, 25, spent two-anda-half months drawing and constructing Dragon, keeper of Princess Fiona’s derelict castle prison-turned Donkey’s love-interest. The 20-feet tall character required “a lot of technical drawings,” the Dufferin and Bloor West streets-area resident told The Villager just days before the creature was set to debut as part of the show. “Originally, it was made out of steel and plywood, but it was way too heavy for the puppeteers,” Lam said. “Now, it’s a combination of steel and PVC – plastic and a bunch of hardware.” The dragon is one of the largest projects Lam has ever worked on.

Bloor West and Dufferin streets area resident Tracy Lam, a graduate of Ryerson University's Theatre Performance Production program, has created a giant dragon for the Lower Ossington Theatre's production of Shrek the Musical.

“It’s just really outrageous what she’s created,” said Tessa Farr, artistic director of the Lower Ossington Theatre. “It was all completely carved from scratch, every single piece. It’s one of the most beautiful things you’ve ever seen. We were all floored.” Dragon is carried by mul-

tiple puppeteers, added Farr, crediting Lam’s artistry and perfectionism. Shrek is on stage now at the Randolph Theatre, 736 Bathurst St. and continues until Oct. 19.

One subway shutdown in October The TTC has cancelled another planned downtown subway shutdown for October. T h re e c l o s u re s we re planned this month along the “U” portion of the YongeUniversity routes, but last week the TTC announced it no longer needed to shut down the stations between Bloor and St. George from Oct. 19 to 20. That means only one service freeze is currently planned, during Thanksgiving weekend. Shuttle buses will serve the affected stations during the one confirmed shutdown which runs from Saturday, Oct. 12 to Monday, Oct. 14. Link returns after six-month hiatus Construction of the UnionPearson (UP) Express air rail link is well underway and now comes news the airport train shuttle service LINK is set to return following a six-month hiatus. LINK, which offers a frequent rail connection between terminals at Pearson International Airport, was

Metrolinx is completing work on the UP Express, which is billed as the city’s first rapid transit connection from the airport to the downtown core. The four-stop express service is scheduled to open in time for the 2015 Toronto Pan American Games and will include stations at Pearson and Union. For Youth Recruiting wRecognized

At a ceremony in Toronto last week, Metrolinx was recognized as a top Canadian employer when it comes to recruiting youth. The provincial transit planning agency was named to the 2013 list of Canada’s Top 100 Employers for providing job opportunities to postsecondary students, as well as research fellowship and

internship opportunities. Metrolinx also recently launched a tuition subsidy program for current employees looking to further their education. Vic Park Work A Winner wTTC’s

The TTC also announced it had received an award for its restored bus terminal at the renovated Victoria Park station. Members of the design team for the project were publicly recognized at last week’s TTC board meeting for receiving a City of Toronto Urban Design Awards, one of five awarded annually for architectural excellence. The re-designed bus bay received the honour after it was transformed, in the words of Beaches-East York Councillor Janet Davis, from a “concrete bunker”, to a welllit, gleaming, barrier-free area as part of a station-wide renovation completed in 2011. Designs for footpath expected to be finalized by November >>>from page 1 Since then, Shuck has designed a footpath to be built in Dufferin Grove Park likely in the spring of next year. “I didn’t have to propose to the city and push this project through,” said Shuck, standing in the south end of the park near Gladstone Avenue and Sylvan Street where the footpath will be constructed.

“I was pleasantly surprised, happy, with the support I had immediately.” According to Davenport Councillor Ana Bailão, the footpath is officially a go and almost completely funded, she announced at her recent community barbecue. Proceeds from the event went toward the footpath as well. “Jenna was very active

in this park. It is the park we most frequented as a family,” said Shuck, who explained that the location within Dufferin Grove was chosen for its flat surface, its distance from Dufferin Street and its proximity to the playground. Although the path will take a loop design, its concept does not demand a particular size. “I hope that by the end of

November we’ll have finalized the drawings and then have a company manufacture it in the spring. The aim is to have it implemented in the spring of next year,” he said. The reflexology path captures Morrison’s spirit, said Shuck. “It relates to our life story,” he said. On a visit to Seoul, Korea

in 2001, Morrison, who lived in the Dundas Street West and Sorauren Avenue area, discovered the widespread pop ular ity o f re flexol ogy footpaths throughout Asia. Struck by this notion, Morrison dreamed of creating such a footpath in one of Toronto’s public parks. Shuck has no desire to install a memorial plaque on the path, in part because

he says he’d like it to belong to the community, however, it will incorporate Morrison’s initials. While he’s not exactly sure how the path will look once completed, he knows one thing’s for sure. “My son will be the first to walk on it,” he said.

Keeping parrots as pets Parrots can be eye-catching companions with dynamic personalities, and these wild animals are naturally curious, intellectual and playful. Unlike some other caged companions, parrots as a whole are intelligent social animals that will demand mental stimulation. Parrots thrive when given lots of

attention, and a properly cared for parrot can live up to 80 years or more. As a result, it's imperative that prospective parrot owners recognize that owning a parrot is a life-long commitment. Ensuring the health of the bird and a good relationship between pet and pet owner takes work and dedication. Getting a

parrot is not a decision to be made on a whim. Here are some points to consider before bringing a parrot into a home. Space: Parrots need a large amount of room in order to play and feel content. The cage will need to allow the comfort of moving around and also room for play. A parrot that does not have adequate

cage room could develop nervous behaviors, like feather plucking or destructive measures, that can be detrimental to its health. Err on the side of caution when choosing a cage and go larger than what you may think you need. Entertainment: A parrot will not be content to sit in an empty room all day. Parrots are inherently social birds, and in the wild they tend to congregate. In a captivity setting, you will serve as the bird's main form of entertainment and interaction. It is important for you to help parrots to socialize with you early on. This helps mold a well-adjusted pet and can reduce the likelihood that the parrot will engage in destructive behavior resulting from boredom. A parrot is susceptible to feelings of depression and anger. Socialization helps to quell these feelings. Expect to give your parrot several hours of interaction time, both inside and outside of the cage. This will help acclimate him to socializing with humans. Other housemates: Understand that parrots can be large, intimidating birds. They are territorial and dominating. Parrots may not get along well with other animals in the house. Conversely, other pets, such as dogs and cats, may not take well to parrots and aim to make them a play thing or a meal. These are considerations to make before bringing a parrot into a home. Although parrots can be social animals, they also can be dangerous. A parrot's beak can easily break twigs and even snap fingers of small children. It may be unadvisable to have a parrot in a home with young children. Cleanliness: Parrots are messy birds, and they will spill seed, throw food and cast feathers around the cage and elsewhere. During times of sexual

maturity or arousal, a parrot also may mark its territory with feces. Parrots have been known to shred paper and toys placed in their cages. An aversion to cleanliness makes parrots less than ideal companions for certain people, especially those who want to perform as little pet maintenance as possible. Bad habits: In addition to vocalization, parrots can learn some not-so-pleasant behaviors. Parrots can scream and squawk to get attention. Certain parrots become territorial of their cages. Parrots can mimic sounds around the house, such as smoke alarms or even yelling. These traits may not be endearing to every pet owner. Biting: Biting is something bird owners often fear. Certain types of parrots have powerful beaks that can inflict painful bites. Biting is sometimes instinctual to parrots who merely want to inspect other birds or companions and may not always intend to be mean. Yet biting also can be a learned and aggressive way for parrots to get what they want. Parrots also can bite out of fear. Building trust with a parrot and doling out discipline with firm biting limits and verbal commands can help break parrots of biting. Alleviating fears and helping the bird to feel comfortable can reduce a parrot's tendency to bite. Expense: Like all pets, parrots have costs associated with their care and diets. These expenses can quickly add up, so people whose finances are already stretched may not be ready for a parrot at this time. – MS

Thousands of dollars raised for fight >>>from page 1 if there’s a settlement between the city and the applicant, the OMB will accept the settlement no matter how prepared the residents association is,” said Lawyer Ian Flett at the Grenadier Retirement Residence, Sept. 30. “There is a lot of value for the developer to have a settlement. Certainly, a settlement is worth money, tangible cash. If the settlement offer is not enough, you can count on a hearing. We can’t get into the nitty-gritty as to where the settlement conversation is. What’s clear is, we can talk about what the issues are relevant to a settlement conversation.” North Drive Investments (NDI) applied for a zoning amendment to make room for an 11-storey, mixed-use building, comprised of 108 residential units, 24 of which would be replacement rental units, and 324 square metres

of at-grade commercial space at 1990 Bloor St. W. and 26 Parkview Gdns. NDI is proposing space for 73 underground parking spots as well as 125 bicycle spaces. The three principle issues regarding settlement are the angular plane from the front of the proposed building, the angular plane at the back and what’s being referred to as the ‘L’ that juts out to the west. “At the end of the day, you’re just trying to get something that will work for your community and sometimes that’s to settle, but the residents association has made it clear it’s willing to go to the OMB,” Flett said. “The principles of a neighbourhood are good planning. The way you get that is by fighting for it.” A pre-hearing is set for May 28. Urban planner Peter Swinton, who has 16 years experience working for the City of Toronto and has

worked on behalf of developers, said the proposed building would obscure the main views of those who live next door at 2000 Bloor St. W. “The ‘L’ makes a big difference, the building wraps around,” Swinton said. The proposal does not meet the guidelines for a mid-rise neighbourhood, he said. The residents association has raised almost $28,000 to hire its team of professionals and preparing for the OMB hearing, according to executive director Dianne Bradley, who thanked everyone for their “generous” support. “We are not opposed to development. This is a prime place to live and development will happen. What we’re looking for is responsible development. That’s what we’re asking for,” she said.
