Teen cyclists pedal long distance for St. Joe’s hospital LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Avid cyclists and high school friends put pedal to the metal to raise money for their local hospital, St. Joseph’s Health Centre, in an event called Cycle 4 St. Joe’s. H a y d e n M a y e u r, 1 5 , a Roncesvalles Village resident, and Jonathan Garcia Limanni, 14, a Lansdowne and St. Clair avenues area resident embarked on an approximately 130-kilometre bike ride from Toronto to Niagara Falls and back again with a goal of raising more than $20,000 for the west end hospital. They completed the ride on Sunday. Classmates at Harbord Collegiate Institute, the boys were particularly inspired to take on the fundraising mission after purchasing road bikes in July. “We were biking around and came up with the idea to do something local,” Mayeur told The

Villager two days before the trip. “This ride means a lot to both of us because we know that St. Joe’s takes care of a lot of kids and it’s where we’d go if we ever needed help.” Maria Dyck, president of St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation, said she is impressed with the boys’ mission. “We are so inspired by Hayden and Jonathan’s enthusiasm, spirit and dedication to giving back,” she said. “They have used St. Joseph’s services and felt strongly about supporting where they had great care close to home. They are two very impressive young men.” The two know of other fundraising rides, such as the Becel Heart and Stroke Ride for Heart, but wanted to make sure their efforts went to their local hospital. The teens set off early Saturday morning and were expected to arrive in Niagara Falls about five and a half hours later. Motel 6, one of their >>>BOYS, page 20

Habitat for Humanity homeowners say family life improves: report LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Lorena Sinato was mere hours from receiving the keys to her new Habitat for Humanity home on Monday morning, yet she already knew the home in Roncesvalles Village would have a significant impact on not

only her life, but that of her young son’s. Looking forward to having friends over, Sinato says the tree-lined Ritchie Avenue home would provide ample space for her son, Bryan, 9, who is legally blind and lives with cerebral palsy, while ensuring his safety. But, most of all, it would offer

him “comfort and happiness.” Her sentiments are echoed by the more than 80 Habitat for Humanity homeowners, who were surveyed for the non-profit organization’s 2012 report: ‘Building a Better City: The Social Impact of Habitat for Humanity Homes in Toronto.’ >>>SURVEY, page 6
