Teen cyclists pedal long distance for St. Joe’s hospital LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Avid cyclists and high school friends put pedal to the metal to raise money for their local hospital, St. Joseph’s Health Centre, in an event called Cycle 4 St. Joe’s. H a y d e n M a y e u r, 1 5 , a Roncesvalles Village resident, and Jonathan Garcia Limanni, 14, a Lansdowne and St. Clair avenues area resident embarked on an approximately 130-kilometre bike ride from Toronto to Niagara Falls and back again with a goal of raising more than $20,000 for the west end hospital. They completed the ride on Sunday. Classmates at Harbord Collegiate Institute, the boys were particularly inspired to take on the fundraising mission after purchasing road bikes in July. “We were biking around and came up with the idea to do something local,” Mayeur told The

Villager two days before the trip. “This ride means a lot to both of us because we know that St. Joe’s takes care of a lot of kids and it’s where we’d go if we ever needed help.” Maria Dyck, president of St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation, said she is impressed with the boys’ mission. “We are so inspired by Hayden and Jonathan’s enthusiasm, spirit and dedication to giving back,” she said. “They have used St. Joseph’s services and felt strongly about supporting where they had great care close to home. They are two very impressive young men.” The two know of other fundraising rides, such as the Becel Heart and Stroke Ride for Heart, but wanted to make sure their efforts went to their local hospital. The teens set off early Saturday morning and were expected to arrive in Niagara Falls about five and a half hours later. Motel 6, one of their >>>BOYS, page 20

Habitat for Humanity homeowners say family life improves: report LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Lorena Sinato was mere hours from receiving the keys to her new Habitat for Humanity home on Monday morning, yet she already knew the home in Roncesvalles Village would have a significant impact on not

only her life, but that of her young son’s. Looking forward to having friends over, Sinato says the tree-lined Ritchie Avenue home would provide ample space for her son, Bryan, 9, who is legally blind and lives with cerebral palsy, while ensuring his safety. But, most of all, it would offer

him “comfort and happiness.” Her sentiments are echoed by the more than 80 Habitat for Humanity homeowners, who were surveyed for the non-profit organization’s 2012 report: ‘Building a Better City: The Social Impact of Habitat for Humanity Homes in Toronto.’ >>>SURVEY, page 6

Rekindling their kindergarten connection Swansea P.S. class of ‘42 reunite at former school LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Principal Karen Ridley stood outside Swansea Public School’s front door on Tuesday afternoon, camera in hand, trying to set up a class photo. The students weren’t being very co-operative; and they were being rather chatty. This group could have been any group of kids under Ridley’s charge. Yet, these students have long since graduated from the elementary school on Windermere Avenue, south of Bloor Street West. “Times haven’t changed, have they,” asked Ridley rhetorically. “They still argue and they still don’t listen to their teacher.” Ridley was only speaking in jest because this group was on a special visit to Swansea P.S. on Sept. 25. The day marked 70 years since its members graduated from kindergarten. They are the kindergarten class of 1942 – the first-ever kindergarten class at the school. The group, ‘Friends of Swansea P.S.,’ as they have coined themselves, has been meeting once a month since 1997’98. The schoolmates began meeting regularly after first reconnecting at Swansea’s 100th anniversary. This year, the approximately 20 former schoolmates turned 75 years old. “The principal said, ‘you’re not

going to recognize the place,’ and she’s right. I haven’t been back here since Grade 6,” revealed Reg Ellerton. “(Swansea P.S.) had a wonderful playground. There was a dump behind the school. Our teachers had trouble keeping us out of it.” Before reconvening at their alma mater, the friends enjoyed a luncheon at The Old Mill Inn. This year is the elementary school’s 122nd year of learning, pointed out Ridley, who before taking the group on a tour, offered them keepsake pencils and buttons. When she asked if there was any particular area of the school that the group wanted to see, someone piped up: “We’ve got to see the kindergarten.” “It’s new since you’ve been here,” Ridley said. “We’ll go down to the old one.” For the most part, their old kindergarten classroom has remained the same. Except, there are no doors on the cloakroom – they’re just coat hooks now, said Grace Thornton. “On the first day of school everyone was crying,” recalled Thornton. “I wasn’t. Some mothers had to stay our first day. They frowned upon that.” Thornton remembered having “a great time” at Swansea where she attended until Grade 8. “It was because of the closeness of the community of Swansea,” she

said. “You didn’t have to go anywhere else. The chief of police knew every kid.” Katharine Worfolk’s father taught at Swansea for 36 years. “I felt like I really had to behave. I think I was a little shy because he was here, but I have fond memories of him teaching,” said Worfolk, who lived in Swansea from 1938 until 1956. “A lot of the homes have changed from being small bungalows to being two storeys. There was a candy store at the corner of Windermere and Morningside Avenue called Nichol’s – that’s where I got all my cavities.” Swansea still retains the same village flavour it once had, said Worfolk, who lived in six different houses in the area. “When I was five, we lived on Ellis Park Road. I used to walk to school. It was a very safe community. We never locked our doors. It was more of a simple life,” she said. remeMbering when: Top, an undated photograph from 1942 of some students at Swansea Public School’s first kindergarten class. High Park violinist wins coveted competition Iryna Krechkovsky to own centuries-old Stradivari valued at $5 million LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com An internationally renowned classical violinist has won the opportunity to own a rare and historic instrument as part of a Canada Council for the Arts contest. Iryna Krechkovsky, who immigrated to the High Park area in the mid-90s, has chosen a 1689 Baumgartner Stradivari valued at $5 million. “It’s beautiful,” Krechkovsky told The Villager on the phone from California where she is currently living and performing. “We picked our instruments out (last) Friday. It’s really cool.” Krechkovsky will own the violin for the next three years. The young musician was one of 28 finalists who auditioned as part of the Canada Council for the Arts competition at The Royal Conservatory in Toronto. The contest ended Thursday, Sept. 20. There were 17 fine-stringed instruments and one cello bow

created between 1689 and 1929 up for grabs. The winner’s placement in the competition determined the order in which he or she chose an instrument – the most coveted being the Stradivari violins and cello along with the Guarneri del Gesù, valued in the millions. “These artists will travel the globe bringing to life the Instrument Bank’s violins and cellos for countless audience members,” said Canada Council director and CEO Robert Sirman in a statement. “Over the next three years, they will develop a very personal relationship with their instrument while sharing with the world their love of music, their passion for performance and their exceptional talents.” Krechkovsky, who was looking forward to spending time with family in Toronto, called the fourday competition “surreal.” She first picked up the violin at the age of six. Her career takes her around the world. Right now, she is performing in a piano trio with

Junior Citizen Awards a chance to nurture creativity

W

ho are the outstanding youth in your community? The Ontario Community Newspapers Association, of which The Bloor West Villager is a member, wants to know. They want to know about the youth who are performing community service – independently, or through their schools and volunteer organizations. These youth are performing heroic acts. They’re contributing to their community while living with a physical or psychological limitation. They do more than what is our view normally expected of someone their age. A number of youth from Toronto communities have been both nominated and recognized over the years. Last year, two of them, Kalem McSween and Andrew Sigmaringam, then 17, were among the 12 provincial recipients. Overall, there were 176 nominees from across the province. McSween, a North York resident, served as a peer mentor to Grade 9 students who have been struggling and are “at risk” both academically and socially. He was also selected to participate with the Toronto Police Services’ Youth in Policing Initiative. Sigmaringam, an Etobicoke resident, helped raise $5,000 for the Free the Children charity and has assisted children with autism. Born deaf, he had cochlear implant surgery as a toddler to allow him to hear. He also shares his personal experiences as a guest speaker at workshops. Any Ontario resident between six and 17 (as of Nov. 30) is eligible to be nominated. Up to 12 nominees will be chosen as recipients of a provincial award and will be invited to a special ceremony next spring. Recognizing youth contributions is positive. But this should go beyond actual recognition. Ultimately, the value of Ontario Junior Citizen Awards is more than providing deserved recognition for the fine work youth do in our communities. We recently wrote in this space on the value of engaging younger citizens for the purpose of ensuring existing volunteer organizations survive a change in generational leadership. We must nurture that innovation and creativity to ensure it blossoms. When our future leaders are being encouraged to explore a pioneering spirit, it means there are fresh, relevant and contemporary solutions to community challenges. The nomination deadline is Nov. 30. Forms are available at www.ocna.org/or by calling 905-639-8720 ext. 239.

We must encourage future leaders

No end to transit funding talk

O

h, goody. The October meeting of Mayor Rob Ford’s executive committee will have a familiar treat: a jolly long talk about how the city might fund major transit expansion projects in the future. From Mel Lastman to David Miller to Rob Ford, the dream of big transit projects has fueled both rhetoric and design like no other project except maybe property tax increases. In that sense, the conversation starting this month and going into next spring will be a little stilted, and might not go anywhere. That’s because the report from City Manager Joe Pennachetti frames the question at the nexus of those ideas: namely, how to finance big transit expansion, whatever that may be, using among other things, big whopping property tax increases. The report is something Toronto Council asked for, mostly in response to Mayor Ford’s moving target plan to build a Sheppard subway into Scarborough using private sector money and a growing amount of federal

THE CITY

david nickle

and provincial grants. In shutting down the subway dream, council in its wisdom decided to look at ways of financing transit absent either the private sector or nominal help from higher orders of government. It is a sensible thing to do: an “adult” conversation that determines what exactly Torontonians are willing to pay for in the way of public transit, which is to say, how much Torontonians are willing to pay. The report looks at hiking the land transfer tax by a percentage point, reinstating a $100 vehicle registration tax, imposing road tolls on highways, and a one per cent property tax hike. In the same agenda, the city manager is setting up a plan to devise a transit plan itself based upon a review of the city’s Official Plan. Once again, it is a sober

and sensible approach to transit planning — two elements lacking in both Mayor Ford’s subway dream, and the bus-tokenin-every-pocket approach that TTC Chair Karen Stintz came up with in the spring with the frenetically gerrymandering One City transit expansion plan. Seems dull and sensible and prosaic, yes? Well, there is still an element of pipe dream to it all. Because even as Toronto Council is considering these plans, so too is Metrolinx, the provincial government’s go-to agency when it comes to financing new transit. Metrolinx also is looking at ways to finance its own transit expansion plans – plans which encompass the entire Golden Horseshoe. The question becomes: if roads do get tolled in Toronto, just whose projects will that money go toward? And so it goes: the conversation on transit will go on, with no end in sight. n David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears every Thursday. To the editor: Re: ‘Transit users speak out against bad behaviour,’ Special Report, Sept. 27. I read the article by Rahul Gupta; I could not believe the comments made by TTC chief customer service officer Chris Upfold. “Rudeness is not something that catches my attention as being high.” Another statement by Upfold was that riders should alter their travel patterns and the times they travel in order to reduce potential disputes. The message sent by Upfold was rudeness and disrespect for others wins. Values, respect, manners and etiquette are instilled into us at an early age with maturity bringing that forward to our later years. Once again the TTC has exposed itself to show us how deep their problems lie. The TTC’s biggest hurdle is the TTC. Ray Blais

Metroland Central expands its reach Division now extends from Toronto to North Bay Metroland Media Group’s Metroland Central division now stretches all the way to North Bay, under the direction of Toronto Community News publisher and Metroland vice president Ian Proudfoot. The division, previously c o m p r i s e d o f To r o n t o Community News and York Region Media Group, now reaches a readership of more than 900,000 homes on a weekly basis, stretching from the heart of the city in Toronto to North Bay in Ontario’s Near North, now incorporating Simcoe/Muskoka division properties.

The expansion offers exciting new opportunities and relationships for readers, clients, community partners and the more than 800 talented employees in Metroland Central, Proudfoot said. Acknowledged as a passionate advocate of the newspaper industry, both print and online, Proudfoot now is publisher of more than 50 print and online products. “Removing borders has created exceptional opportunities for our clients to extend their reach,” Proudfoot said. In announcing the expanded division, effective Oct. 1, Metroland president Ian Oliver paid tribute to retiring vice-president and Simcoe/Muskoka regional publisher Joe Anderson. “Joe’s creativity, drive and strategic focus have made him a significant contributor to Metroland.”

Proudfoot led the creation of the Metroland Central division in May, adding Toronto Community News to his York Region Media Group, upon the retirement of TCN publisher Betty Carr. Metroland’s Toronto, York Region, Simcoe, Muskoka, Parry Sound and North Bay media properties have a tradition of creating strong community partnerships and supporting non-profit organizations, through volunteering, donations and services. Proudfoot’s longtime commitment and outstanding contribution to community was recognized when he received a 2011 Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship. He is quick to acknowledge the contributions and talents of his employees, adding, “I’m honoured to work with people who have true passion for their communities and what they do on a daily basis.”

Junction BIA, environmental groups free honey locust trees from concrete LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com In c o m m e m o ra t i o n o f National Tree Day, several environmental advocacy groups have come together to free four large honey locust trees in the Junction from their pavement prison last week. Representatives from LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests) and partners, including Green Communities Canada, t h e Ju n c t i o n Bu s i n e s s Improvement Area (BIA), Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette and local landscaping company Green Gardeners set out to remove encroaching paving stones, rows of interlocking brick and gravel from around the trees’ trunks before replacing them with soil and native strawberry plants, on Wednesday, Sept. 26. Their efforts were part of an initiative called ‘Depave Paradise,’ which the Junction and five other communities in Ontario have embarked on. “We’ve been able to create a lot more space,” said Jessica Piskorowski, education and stewardship co-ordinator at

LEAF, on Pacific Avenue, just south of Dundas Street West along the boulevard of the No Frills grocery store. “This will allow the trees’ roots to extend, preventing physical damage.” Piskorowski said street trees play an important role in people’s lives; by beautifying neighbourhoods, providing shade and soaking up rain water and keeping it out of storm drains. The Junction BIA is pleased to be partnering with LEAF for this project, said its executive director Kristina Skindelyte. “Thank you to LEAF for bringing this project to our attention,” she said. “We’re hoping that this is a longtime partnership. The BIA cares tremendously about beautifying our streetscape. The businesses care about trees – they provide shade while attract more shoppers and more frequent shopping visits. This is a beautiful example of how the community came together.” The BIA has pledged its support in way of keeping the strawberry plants watered regularly. The councillor cred-

ited city officials for moving quickly on this project, granting permission to take apart the boulevard. Andrew Roy of The Green Gardener has committed to finding a creative re-use of the gravel and paver stones. Native strawberry plants were chosen to surround the trees because they’re hearty. “They can withstand stresses like foot traffic and (road) salt,” said Piskorowski. The four honey locusts are approximately 20 to 30 years, said Janet McKay, executive director of LEAF. They’ve faced many stresses over the years, much like all city trees do, such as limited soil volumes for root growth, hard surfaces that prevent water and oxygen from reaching roots, over-pruning to accommodate overhead wires and physical damage from vehicles and vandalism. Additional support for this project came from FIDOEvergreen, City of Toronto/ Urban Forestry and No Frills. Visit www.yourleaf.org/ junction-depave-paradise for further details.

Study investigates social impact of Habitat for Humanity home ownership >>>from page 1 Habitat for Humanity CEO Neil Hetherington released the findings of the survey at Queen’s Park on On Oct. 1, the UN-designated and Toronto Mayor Rob Ford proclaimedWorld Habitat Day. He was joined by Davenport Councillor Ana Bailão, chair of the City of Toronto’s affordable housing committee, who presented the Mayoral Proclamation. The survey investigated the social impacts associated with Habitat ownership. A team of volunteers posed more than 60 questions to families, which took approximately an hour, explained Gillian Bartlett, of Bartlett Cultural Connections, author of the report. “I think it was a fabulous study to have undertaken. I think the results are such a pleasure to have seen,” she said. Hetherington agreed. “This was a labour of love for a group of over 50 volunteers who put this report

together and it says some wonderful things. The results are astounding,” he said. Respondents were asked to report on their family’s lives at the time they applied for a Habitat home. The same questions were posed again in an effort to capture their present living situation as homeowners. Families revealed that homeownership led to strengthened communities and opened doors for lowincome youth. For example, 97 per cent feel pride in their new homes – a 53 per cent increase since before the home was purchased. Respondents report a 135 per cent increase in inviting visitors to their homes and 92 per cent say they will remain in their Habitat home for a long time and couldn’t imagine ever leaving. Meanwhile, 76 per cent of homeowners report an improvement in their children’s school grades; 93 per cent say it’s now easier for

them to find space to complete homework; 88 per cent report an improvement in their children’s confidence and 81 per cent an increase in their children’s social lives. Ninety-seven per cent of school-aged children living in a Habitat home are still in school. “What is clear from our survey is that people feel empowered and are able to break the cycle of poverty,” said Hetherington. No child who grew up in a Habitat home has ever needed one himself, a fact Hetherington was happy to share. Last fall, Habitat for Humanity released a report that focused on the economic impact of Habitat homeownership on the City of Toronto, ‘From Subsidies to Sustainable Communities.’ “On average, a family’s net worth increased by $28,000 once they moved into affordable housing,” Hetherington noted.

Police

Photographer arrested on sexual assault charges A Roncesvalles photographer has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman who visited his studio for a photo shoot. The incident happened on Tuesday, Sept. 25 and the following day, Douglas Shimizu, 49, was arrested and charged with sexual assault and administering drugs for sex. Police allege Shimizu sexually assaulted the 32-year-old woman after the photo shoot, in the Roncesvalles and Morrow avenues area. Police believe there may be more

victims. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416808-7474 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.

n Harrassment suspect sought

Police are looking to the public for help with a criminal harassment investigation. In late August, a man followed a 13-year-old girl in the Bloor and Jane streets area before attempting to grab her. The teen ran into a store before the man took off.

ed of r Ti ng i t a e h

He is described as black, between the ages of 20 and 25, about 5’7” to 5’9” in height with a slim build and a bald head. He was last seen wearing a gold necklace, a black Adidas windbreaker with three black stripes on the sleeves, a black T-shirt and baggy black pants. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416−808−1139 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.

n Poster contest for youth

Young people seem to always be on their cellphones.

And even the police have noticed an upswing in the number of misdials coming from them. Now police are turning to the city’s youth to create an effective campaign to combat the problem. Toronto residents aged 10 to 24 are invited to create a video or poster educating others on when to call 911 and how to avoid pocket dials, which clog up the emergency line. “All the entries will be judged and we will select one to be the public service announcement for

the Toronto Police Service,” Const. Wendy Drummond said. Winners will also be awarded a prize. The contest closes Nov. 9. “Maybe we’re missing a key element in how to reach people and educate them,” Drummond said. “So we’re taking it to an age group that is the highest volume contributor to misdials and pocket dials and hang-ups and for them to come up with a campaign that would be effective.” For contest details, visit www. torontopolice.on.ca/911contest.

Toronto High Park team wins Ontario Cup championship

IN SUPPORT OF ST. JOSEPH’S HEALTH CENTRE

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2012

North York Hearts squad settles for runner-up The Toronto High Park under 15 boys soccer squad completed a spectacular comeback to win their tier two Ontario Cup provincial championship earlier this month in overtime penalty kicks over the Brampton Blast. Toronto needed two lastsecond goals by Luke Caccamo and Che Doucette, respectively, in the 90th and 92nd minute (in injury time) to tie the game at 2-2. The team then capped off the comeback on

overtime penalty kicks by a 2-1 margin. Toronto’s player of the game was Owen Roderick Gutierrez. To r o n t o H i g h P a r k advanced to the Ontario Cup championship game with a 2-1 semifinal win last month over Niagara Falls Titans. They came back in that game, as well, with goals at the 27th and 84th minute by Stephen Bell and Luke Caccamo, respectively. Toronto only had one other

team reach the Ontario Cup championship finals. The North York Hearts under 16 boys squad couldn’t quite complete their comeback in a 2-1 loss to Erin Mills Eagles in the tier one Ontario Cup championship final. After Erin Mills built up a 2-0 lead North York made things interesting with a goal in the 76th minute by Adam Alonzi, who was also took player of the game honours for his team.

Boys connected with area schools, community to raise funds for ride >>>from page 1 sponsors, offered them a place to stay for the night before their return ride on Sunday. “We’ve gotten a lot of help from our sponsors,” said Mayeur, giving credit to Velocolour, which painted their bikes in St. Joe’s colours; Peter’s No Frills (at Lansdowne Avenue and Dufferin Street) for keeping them fuelled and hydrated

with fruit, power bars and sport drinks; Wheels of Bloor, which is providing extra tires, inner tubes, socks, air pumps and water bottles; Timothy’s (at Runnymede Road and Bloor Street West) for providing coffee for their Saturday morning send-off; I Press It, for printing all logos on their jerseys as well as Motel 6. “Without all these guys, we wouldn’t have been able

Healthy habits for plump pets Summer has come to an end and the kids are back to school. It’s time to get into an exercise routine with your pet! Obesity is a growing problem in our dogs and cats, and can lead to many associated health problems. Diabetes, liver disease, joint disease, ligament tears and breathing and heart strain are among a few conditions that overweight pets are at risk for. Many dogs and cats find themselves experiencing greater discomfort from arthritis and joint disease at an earlier age due to the increased strain

placed on their joints from extra weight. Overweight cats can even develop skin problems from not being able to groom themselves properly. The overall impact on comfort and longevity can be significant. The problem is not too different from the one we experience ourselves – the tendency to overeat, and not exercising enough. We have to take responsibility for most of this problem in our pets because unlike us, our furry friends are unable to raid the fridge overnight or stop at the local burger joint on their way home. They

are dependent on us for food and in many ways exercise too. Most pets would be thrilled to go out on a long walk, play ball in the park or chase a laser pointer or a toy on a string with their best friend – you! The first step is to determine if your pet is overweight. Ideal body condition in a pet is characterized by being able to feel the ribs under a small fat pad (you shouldn’t see the bones protruding), a distinct waist at the bottom of the rib cage and a small tuck in the abdomen just before the hind legs. If you think your pet has a

problem, the best place to start your pet’s diet plan is with a trip to your veterinarian. He or she will help you learn how to make a gradual change to the most appropriate diet and create an exercise plan for your pet. Taking some time out of your busy schedule to walk your dog or play with your cat will help to improve the health and quality of both of your lives. It is important to stick to the regimen that you and your veterinarian decide on. Expressing love to our pets through food can be a hard habit to break. All pets deserve

some treats. You can try mini rice cakes and small carrot sticks for the occasional dog treat. Dogs love them, and they’re not going to sabotage any weight-loss efforts. It can be hard initially, especially when faced with begging
