Pevere, a Revue advocate, stars in a video short plugging the newly launched crowdfunding campaign ‘Renew the Revue.’ One of the country’s oldest movie houses, the cinema is desperately in need of a facelift, said Mark Ellwood, Revue Film Society board member. “Like your house, you’ve got to keep fixing things,” Ellwood told The Villager earlier this week at the theatre located at 400 Roncesvalles Ave. The century-old cinema requires major interior upgrades to its ticket lobby, main lobby and auditorium, including lighting, wall treatments, doors, walls, floors and plumbing. “Our key element is to make the place more functional, to spruce up the bathrooms and fix the front facade of the theatre,” said Joe Ward, another >>>CAMPAIGN, page 7

Annette Street Library branch manager Pam Mountain accepts fire safety-themed books and toys, compliments of local firefighters (l-r) Greg Schultz, Darren Nesbitt and Paul Spearman.

Firefighters donate toys “Wow, these are awesome,” exclaimed Annette Street Library branch head Pam Mountain as she accepted donations of books and toys on behalf of Junction firefighters on Wednesday. Firefighters Greg Schultz and his colleagues Paul Spearman from fire hall no. 423 and Darren Nesbitt from no. 426 in Parkdale arrived

at the library in a fire truck to deliver fire safety-themed books and toys in recognition of National Fire Safety Week. “Every child who reads a fire safety-themed book will get to fill out a ballot to be entered into a raffle to win books and toys,” Mountain told The Villager. The toys and books are

compliments of the Toronto Fire Fighter Toy Drive, which is starting to ramp up its campaign for the holiday season, Schultz said. Although, the Toronto Fire Services accepts toys year-round to help those who have lost belongings in a fire. What better way to experience the colours of autumn than in High Park – and for a good cause. The inaugural Canadian Tire Run for Playgrounds takes place in High Park this Thanksgiving weekend, Saturday, Oct. 12. This is an eight-kilometre or 5km run or 1km fun run for children with the start/finish line situated at the Jamie Bell Adventure Pl a y g ro u n d , a s h i n i n g example of the importance of playgrounds and what

communities can do when they band together, said race director Stacie Smith. “You don’t have to be a runner to come out,” Smith said. “It’s not about the run per se, it’s more about the park.” Playgrounds are the first opportunity children have for “real, unstructured play,” Smith said. “It’s so important that there are acceptable, safe and clean playgrounds so kids can just run around and be kids,” she told The Villager. According to their websites, Jumpstart is dedicated to removing barriers so children can participate in organized sport and recreation, while Toronto Parks and Trees is a charitable public foundation dedicated to enhancing the city’s parks. Funds raised from the

Canadian Tire Run for Playgrounds, the first-ever event of its kind, will go toward fixing up the city’s parks. Run for Playgrounds is not your standard race, Smith said. A ‘Family Village’ constructed by Canadian Tire will offer face painting, Olympic demonstrations and a trampoline, among a host of other activities. Participants are required to register online at runforplaygrounds.ca. Friends and families are encouraged to sponsor runners. Use the promo code: “coto10” and save $10 on registration fees. Check-in starts at 6:30 a.m. with opening ceremonies at 8:45 a.m.

Bacterial infection could have caused Grenadier Pond die-off, says ministry Months after thousands of fish were discovered belly up in Grenadier Pond, the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) says it has determined the cause of the die-off – sort of. The MNR sent several sunfish for testing at the University of Guelph at the end of July and the results show the cause of infection is “not too conclusive,” according to ministry spokesperson Jolanta Kowalski. “Results indicate the cause of infection is unclear, but

it appeared to be bacterial,” Kowalski told The Villager, this week. “Ministry of Environment water tests show nothing was in the water that could account for the die-off.” To r o n t o R e g i o n Conservation Authority staff conducted “dissolved oxygen and water temperature” testing right after the die-off and the results came back normal, Kowalski said. “There is nothing to indicate the die-off was a risk to human health,” she said.

Yellow perch, rock bass, black crappy and a few other species died as a result of the die-off. Small die-offs are not uncommon, according to Kowalski, however, she classified this particular one as large in size. Die-offs can be caused by such environmental events as storms or extreme heat. There have been no reports of dead fish since the initial die-off. The pond still has a significant warm water fishery. – Lisa Rainford

Building stronger neighbourhoods

Write us

T

he next chapter of Toronto’s Strong Neighbourhood Strategy is about to be written and the city needs your input. The project saw the creation of 13 priority neighbourhoods – “hot spots of high need and low infrastructure” – and over eight years worked with the province and the United Way to try to improve the lives of residents through targeted investment. The program is now being re-evaluated and new Neighbourhood Improvement Area (NIAs) designations may be in the works. A host of public meetings are being held across the city this month to help shape the program’s future. In particular, city staff want your ideas on criteria used to select NIAs, what goals should be established, and how the city should track its success. We’ve always touted the importance of local engageour view ment and this instance is no exception. If you live in one of the currently designated areas Residents’ live in an area you believe input needed or needs concentrated investment, your input will be the for strategy most valuable. It’s your experience that will help answer some of the most critical questions. For instance, are the previously designated priority neighbourhoods ready to stand on their own? It’s not clear yet whether any of these areas will remain on the NIA list. Community hubs, drop-in centres, youth programming and partnerships have been established, but is that enough to ensure self-sustainability? Residents need to speak up about the results they’ve seen – or not seen – at the grassroots level. As well, the groups that have been involved in transforming these neighbourhoods need to declare whether they feel they can continue their work on their own. If it happens that these neighbourhoods do remain on the list, it’ll beg the question as to why. The city should be transparent in explaining why certain communities may still need focused help, even after eight years of investment. Would that be evidence of a failure? A need to modify expectations? Redistribute funding? Besides garnering opinion and experiential data from the people the program is meant to help, the city also needs to learn from lessons of the past. Without a critical self-evaluation of the project’s previous eight years, the story of Toronto’s Strong Neighbourhoods will be a short one with an ending that disappoints. Have your say. Visit www.toronto.ca/ neighbourhoods to learn how.

Time to talk turkey before Thanksgiving So, how’s your Things To Be Thankful For list coming along? What do you mean you haven’t done it yet? Thanksgiving is on Monday, for heaven’s sake. You can’t start Thanksgiving without one. It goes hand in hand with the holiday. Luckily, there’s still time. So, if all you need is just a kickstart to get going, here’s my Things To Be Thankful For list, in no particular order. First off, I’m thankful that way back in March when the hype was at its max because of the team’s off-season moves, that I didn’t take my broker’s advice to invest in Toronto Blue Jays World Series tickets. I like to take a waitand-see approach when it comes to sports. Not so with gridlock. I’m all in when I see massive congestion on the horizon. That’s why I am very thankful that I acted on my broker’s second tip, regarding the widespread street

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY

construction in and around Toronto and invested heavily in orange cone futures. It was money well spent. Things worked out even better than his projections. I hit the jackpot with the endless renovations on Avenue Road alone. Speaking of windfalls, with Thanksgiving being a statutory holiday, I’m also thankful to partake in another stat pay. Stat pay always brings a smile to my face. I’m even more thankful that I don’t have to calculate my share. I asked 10 people this week to explain how they come up with their stat pay amount and each person told me something different. Lest you think I’m only thankful when it comes to accumulating money, I’m also thankful for the great entertainment at my

fingertips, particularly the reality TV fare. It never gets old. This year all the buzz is for CBS’s Survivor Watching My Mother The Car re-runs. It is being hailed by critics as the toughest one yet. Who will be the last one sitting? I’m also thankful I have The Disney Channel so I can see its popular animated reality series classic, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’s Apprentice – Celebrity Edition. And I’m really thankful I get the History Channel and it has finally decided to wade into the reality TV programming scene. Unbelievably, the network has four blockbuster hits in its first foray in the genre: Big Brother The Acropolis, Renaissance Idol, So You Think You Can Joust and Lancing With The Stars. Switching from tape to live entertainment, I’m also thankful that I’m not one of the pandas at the Toronto Zoo. It’s not the crowds. I’m sure I’d get used to them

after a while. And all you can eat bamboo? Come on. You’ve got to love that. No, it’s something else that makes me thankful I didn’t get the gig. The fact is, I just don’t look good in fur. As for the upcoming big day itself, I’m thankful somebody always seems to invite me over for Thanksgiving dinner. All these years I’ve never cooked a turkey. And, just in case I don’t get an invitation some Thanksgiving in the future and have to come up with an alternative Thanksgiving meal game plan, I am extremely thankful McDonald’s doesn’t have turkey on its menu. I’m guessing it’s because McButterball just doesn’t roll off the tongue. Not even if you add McStuffing and McGravy in a McBoat on the McSide.

Classical concert to support police

Violinist, pianist to perform Oct. 20 at Gate 403 ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com It can be hard to find like-minded musicians, but when two accomplished local artists started to play together the women said they really clicked. Violinist Susan Spier, from Bloor West, and pianist Catherine Maguire, from the Rockcliffe-Smythe neighbourhood in York, have been playing together for a couple of years and on Sunday, Oct. 20 they will come together to present their first public offering in order to raise funds for a local police scholarship program. “We have the same objectives of learning chamber works that we really wanted to play,” Spier said. “Our way of working is similar and we enjoy playing together.” Maguire comes from a musical

family and has studied music and piano at the University of Toronto and the University of Western Ontario. Spier started playing the violin in public school and went on to study music and musicology extensively at a number of universities before playing with the Montreal Symphony for five years. She now teaches the violin out of a studio in Bloor West.

Maguire also teaches piano and also directs a choir in York Region. “We started for fun simply to play through some sonatas, and this led to our decision to work on repertoire that we both wished to pursue in more depth,” Spier explained. The concert is being held in support of the Toronto Police Service 11 Division Community Police Liaison Committee (CPLC)

Community Safety Scholarship, which is awarded through the Scadding Court Community Centre Scholarship Program. The CPLC Community Safety Scholarship awards up to $4,000 to deserving young people who are making their community a safer place. The women decided on the theme “music and youth”, which comes to life through the pieces they have chosen to play. “Each work has a specific connection to youth and I am going to give a commentary that will tie the program together and unify it,” Spier said. The women will perform sonata selections of Vivaldi, Mendelssohn, Franck and Ravel. “It’s a classical concert, but the commentary will make it accessible,” Spier said. The concert begins at 2 p.m. at Gate 403 Restaurant located at 403 Roncesvalles Ave. Tickets are $35 each and must be purchased in advance.

Footballer heading Down Under to represent Canada Corso Italia-area resident Renee Tong’s athletic dream has come true. The 23-year-old will represent Canada at the 2014 International Cup in Australia thanks in part to a contest offered by the natural supplements corporation called Genuine Health. Sharing her story in an online essay, Tong garnered the most votes to win the $10,000 prize to “fuel her athletic dream.” The international cup is a tournament for Australian Rules Football, a relatively unknown sport outside of Australia, which she’s been playing since 2009. The University of Western Ontario Kinesiology graduate was first introduced to “Aussie Rules” football in high school. Currently on the women’s 2013 team, Tong is eager to attempt to better Canada’s second-place finish Down

Condo Living Kitchen space-saving tips for Toronto’s condominium owners

As Canadians continue to opt for condo and apartment living, maximizing space has become increasingly important. This is especially important for kitchens, which have the tendency to collect an abundance of utensils and gadgets, from coffee makers and mugs to containers and cutlery. To keep your kitchen in tip-top shape and free of anx-

iety-causing clutter, follow these space-saving tips: Think up: Don't limit yourself to using what's been provided; utilize the ceiling to install a pot rack to free up drawer space. Have empty space above your cupboards? Pop some pretty storage containers on top to help clear counter space. Use your walls: Since you're

short on space, hanging mirrors on your walls can help create the illusion of a larger kitchen. You can also add inexpensive shelves and hooks to store items and keep your kitchen looking tidy. Edit: If you don't need it and you can live without it, get rid of it, especially in your fridge. Condiments that don't need to be refrigerated, for example, can be

moved to a cupboard. Store unused items: Do you really need that ice cream maker on your counter all year? Store it away for the season to free up counter space. The same goes for those other gadgets you love but rarely use. Consider putting items you don't use frequently up high or under your counter. – newscanada.com

an outdoor art project by both junior and senior students. Each student decorated a leaf or a fish and despite following weather-proofing tips, said Solar, they were ruined by the first rainfall. Through one of the parents on the playground committee, the school connected with 3M Canada and Freeman and Peter signs, who have donated time and materials to save the murals. “They’re doing all the work for free,” said Solar, whose daughter is in Grade 5 and twin sons are in Grade 3. The fish and leaves will be hung as part of the tree planting ceremony. The Saturday, Oct. 19 event is open to the public. If you would like further details, contact 416-393-5237.

Closure over Thanksgiving wPartial

The TTC is closing the “U” portion of the YongeUniversity-Spadina subway line on Thanksgiving weekend. Downtown train service between Bloor and St. George stations is out of commission from Oct. 12 to 14 due to ongoing signal upgrades. It’s the only closure this month following the scrapping of two planned shutdowns. TTC CEO Andy Byford also confirmed last week a six-week

bike to Layton to stay put wMemorial

A memorial bicycle installed in Riverside in honour of Jack Layton won’t be removed any time soon. A online petition circulated after a city notice of removal was spotted on the white painted bicycle in front of the NDP’s leader’s former Broadview Avenue constituency office towards the end of September. But after consulting with city staff, local councillor Paula Fletcher announced the bike will remain at the site until plans for a permanent memorial are finalized. The bicycle was installed following Layton’s death from cancer in 2011. Rahul Gupta is The Villager’s transit reporter. His column appears every Thursday. Reach him on Twitter: @TOinTRANSIT
