3-D PRINTER MAGIC

Soil samples taken from the GE-Hitachi nuclear energy facility at Lansdowne Avenue and Dupont Street indicate there are no health risks to the community, according to Toronto Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown. The Ministry of Environment has completed its testing of soil at the GE-Hitachi plant in response to residents’ concerns about the uranium processing at the facility. The results show that uranium concentrations in the soils were all within the “range of background concentrations typical in Ontario soils.” McKeown said Toronto Public Health does not feel there are any health risks to residents. From tinkers to inventors; kids let creativity take hold MakerKids fosters imagination, hands-on creation LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

Above, Elliot Scott, 3, clips wires on the way to building his own robot while below, Ariel Berant, 9, saws a plank for his floating aircraft launcher with guidance from Grade 10 volunteer Matthew Seferian.

Eight-year-old A.J. was enthusiastically working on building his remote-controlled robot on a recent Tuesday after school – at a workshop space created especially for kids in Roncesvalles Village. “I’m going to bring it to school and present it – it’s going to be awesome,” said A.J. as he glued its “gigantic” wheels. A.J. discovered MakerKids only two weeks earlier, but was drawn to it immediately. “My dad found it online. He said, ‘Oh, this is cool, we should go,’” A.J. said. “I just like making stuff, being creative. I like inventing stuff.” MakerKids is a non-profit and provides hands-on after-school programs, parties and workshops for youth and adults in 3-D printing, electronics, woodworking, coding, sewing, crafting and Minecraft programs. Situated in a storefront near Dundas and Bloor streets west, the non-profit MakerKids has been

open for about 18 months. Activities come with a fee, but some are discounted if you bring your own materials. Volunteer facilitator Misha D u b r ov s k y s t u m b l e d u p o n MakerKids while looking for a place to donate his chemistry set and soon became a teacher to the young children. “I like showing people how to make stuff, teaching them skills. Ever yone’s so enthusiastic,” Dubrovsky said. Co-founded by Andy Forest and his wife Marianne Mader, MakerKids was inspired by the couple’s children, now age 10, 12 and 14. Forest said he simply loved helping his children make things in their garage. He says he was also inspired by Californian Gever Tulley, author of the book ‘50 Dangerous Things (you should let your children do)’ and creator of “Tinkering School.” “We set up a tinkering summer camp here in my garage with my three kids and their friends,” Forest recalled.

“We made soap box cars we raced in High Park and boats we sailed in the lake.” The couple decided to look for a workshop space in their neighbourhood and discovered the nearby storefront with basement at 2241 Dundas St. W. Inside, there are computers, a soldering station and a wood-working shop with table saw amid shelves of materials both purchased and donated. It is a hive of activity. ‘If you can imagine it, you can make it,’ a sign on the wall says. ‘Everyone is a maker. Our world is what we make it.’ David, 8, was busy designing a 3D six-legged spider on the computer. “I like making things with electronics,” he said. Programs and events are offered every evening and on the weekends. Volunteers are needed.

ith colder weather approaching, the needs of the homeless in our city will come into sharper focus and there’s a new initiative underway that allows local residents, business, religious groups and social service agencies to coordinate the ways they can help. Homeless Connect Toronto is a branch of the North America-wide Project Homeless Connect which aims to improve the access the homeless have to the services and programs they need. The 2013 Street Needs Assessment interim report, which was released by the City of Toronto this summer, estimated the number of homeless at 5,219. While those numbers represent an increase of only about one per cent from the last survey in 2009, all Torontonians should be that so many of our our view concerned fellow citizens have no place to Do your part callIt’shome. important to note more than 76.1 per cent of those surto help city’s veyed by the city on the night of homeless April 17 were recorded as taking refuge in city-administered homeless shelters. Approximately 8.6 per cent were sleeping outdoors, according to the report. Perhaps the bright spot in the report’s numbers is that the large percentage of homeless in shelters are at least within the reach of social service agencies and programs. Which is why an initiative like Homeless Connect Toronto has the potential to do a lot of good. Homeless Connect plans to bring together support services in fields such as housing, employment, health care, and clothing in one place, for those in need to access and learn more about what is available to them. The organization is planning an event at the Harbourfront Community Centre on April 13 of next year, and is now looking for sponsors and service providers to get involved. The local business community can help with sponsorships, covering the costs of getting the word out in the homeless community, and making those in need aware of potential job openings. Homelessness is far from a downtown issue in Toronto. There are shelters in neighbourhoods around the city. Local residents can take advantage of what Homeless Connect is doing by finding out the ways they can help, and by connecting to service agencies and programs in need of volunteers.

Staying friends after this breakup, unlikely

I

t surely was an aggressive move by Mayor Rob Ford to send robocalls to the constituents of Ward 43 Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie Friday evening. One might even say it went over the top in its aggression, straight on to intimidation and bullying, or to use Councillor Ainslie’s words, “thuggery.” But it’s really not surprising. Never mind Mayor Ford’s generally pugilistic modus operandi when it comes to local, retail politics. Never mind that Ainslie had broken with the mayor on his vision for a subway-at-all-costs for Scarborough residents. The two hadn’t seen eye to eye really since the beginning of the term. Ainslie started out, installed as the chair of the Toronto Public Library Board, where he did his best to implement the mayor’s early-term

david nickle the city cost-cutting agenda – ultimately getting caught up with the mayor’s office in the stumble over branch cuts that emerged in the 2011 budget process. And when it came time to replace Ford’s budget chief Mike Del Grande, Ainslie – an experienced budget committee member more than willing to do the job – was passed over in favour of budget neophite Frank Di Giorgio. On the other side of the equation, Ainslie wasn’t afraid to go on the record to the Toronto Star when they were investigating allegations that the mayor had shown up appearing to be intoxicated for the annual Garrison Ball. Ainslie said those allegations were true. So Mayor Ford took to the telephone lines, on his

own dime, to tell Ainslie’s constituents that it was “extremely, extremely unfortunate” that Ainslie “did not listen to his constituents,” and “led the charge” against the subway in Scarborough. The implication is clear: that good-hearted Scarborough folk should cast their votes elsewhere the next chance they get. Ainslie came out swinging Tuesday. He’s taking the matter to the city’s integrity commissioner. He outright called Mayor Ford a liar over his characterization of the subway and called the whole robocall adventure “a blatant act of political thuggery.” Strong, brave words. It’s a shame that he couldn’t have found them sooner. Ainslie was absolutely right to raise questions about the financial realities surrounding the subway plan. Yet as recently as July, Ainslie

supported moving along with that plan – despite the fact that many of the same funding problems existed then as now. In an interview, he explained that he’d hoped the city could negotiate those away by the Sept. 30 deadline council set. But really – hope for such a resolution was as faint then as it is now. Now it’s off to the integrity commissioner, who’ll be asked to rule on whether Toronto council’s code of conduct is copacetic with aggressive robocalling in the wards of one’s political enemies. While that sorts itself out, we might show a little understanding about the vehemence with which Ainslie directs his rhetoric toward his former friend the mayor. As breakups go, this is an ugly one.

Tory blasts Toronto’s ‘politicking’ In an open letter to Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) elected officials, Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance chair John Tory called for a “laser focus” to transit planning. Tory released the letter as city council debated whether to jettison a fully-funded LRT plan and raise property taxes to fund a three-stop Scarborough subway extension instead. Transit planning is in jeopardy due to “short-term decision-making and politicking”, writes Tory. “The result has been decades of cancelled projects, incomplete facts, and failed accountability.” work impacts streetcar service wTrack

Life experiences guide inspiration for artist’s multi-media art project Janna Brown is the Sharon Wolf Artist-inResidence at Tangled Art + Disability LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Artist Janna Brown has drawn from a particularly trying time in her life for inspiration for her latest project as the newly named 2013/14 Sharon Wolf Artist-In-Residence at Tangled Art + Disability. The program invites a “disabilityidentified” artist to pursue a project that furthers her own artistic career while influencing the wider community of artists who are living with disabilities. “It’s a big honour having been chosen out of a pool of really fantastic artists who have lots to share,” the Lansdowne Avenue and Bloor Street West-area resident told The

Villager. “It’s an honour to be a part of that community.” Brown’s proposed project is a multi-media art installation that combines photography, video, poetry and original artwork. Entitled ‘Still Echoes Resound,’ the project is comprised of a series of six digital short stories that use a collection of

Brown’s poetry, narrated by her. “The work stems from an unhinging in my own life, a sexual trauma and family loss – consequences of what would be considered mental health issues,” Brown revealed. “I wanted to create art to gather input, to open up dialogue with others who have experienced a similar trauma. I used my lived experience as a vantage point. I hope it can connect to others.” Brown, a New Brunswick native who moved to Toronto seven years ago to pursue a Master of Arts in Critical Disability Studies at York University, has studied sculpture and installation at the Ontario College of Art and Design. “My art practice had gone to the back burner,” Brown said. “After I finished my research, I decided to study visual arts again. I wanted to work with kids through therapeutic art-making.” Brown has worked with children and youth with developmental disabilities facilitating groups for

In its second year, the residency program provides professional artists from the disability community the chance to devote themselves entirely to a specific program of work. Brown received a $5,000 stipend and access to studio space in the 401 Richmond building. “It’s very exciting for me,” Brown confessed. For more than a decade, Tangled Art + Disability (formerly known as the Abilities Arts Festival) has developed, promoted, and presented work by artists with disabilities, first through its annual festivals and more recently through its professional development workshops and special events. Library celebration planned for Oct. 23 >>>from page 1 When it first opened in the fall of 1913, the branch, then known as Dovercourt, was the largest in Canada and the first library building in the city to be constructed solely with municipal funds. “When you look at Bloor/ Gladstone and you see the wonderful building and you see it still standing here working for the community, it’s a testament to its value and vitality,” Bailey said. Renamed the Bloor and Gladstone Branch in 1938, the building has undergone several reincarnations. Listed on the Toronto Historical Board’s Inventory of Heritage Properties in 1993, the library’s latest major renovation and expansion began in 2006. Reopened in 2009, the branch was the first Toronto Public Library building with a green roof. “It blossomed after renovation,” said Toronto Public Library area manager Cheryl Skovronek. “The community loves it. Every seat is always taken.”

Still playing after all these years

O

ne by one the lads shuffled into the dressing room at venerable Dave Keon Arena late Thursday night to kick off another season of pickup hockey for The Way And I Mean Waaaaay Over The Hill Gang. There were plenty of high fives, low fives, in between fives and smiles all around. Then it was time to get down to business. We’re talking of the business of sports injury oneupmanship, of course. Romeo lead off the festivities by giving a tear-jerking update on his long-time sciatica as he struggled to squeeze into his hockey pants. Next up was Scoop. He had his familiar tensor bandages wrapped tightly around both wrists. Still battling carpal tunnel syndrome, alas, he sighed. Two tear-jerking Kodak moments right after another brought to you by OHIP. But wait, sports fans. There was more, much more.

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY The Hulk informed us his nagging shin splints were acting up again. That meant no back-checking on the horizon for him. Knox reported his bothersome elbow ligaments were so tender he wasn’t even sure he’d able to get his skate laces tied, let along grip a stick. Ergo, no passing from him anytime soon. Footsteps notified us that his always problematic Achilles tendon felt like it was on fire. Hence, no backchecking for him in the days ahead. Gramps gave us a heads up that his aching rotator cuff was giving him fits. Consequently, we shouldn’t expect much in the way of passing from him down the road. And Frick said he was recovering from a high ankle sprain while his long-time line mate Frack added he was battling a low ankle sprain. And on and on

it went ad nauseam. But it didn’t stop there. It continued well past nauseam, until there was only one player left: Slick. Slick said he was suffering from the worst groin strain in his career and invited any skeptics to inspect the area personally. All present respectively declined. When it comes to the condition of one’s groin, one’s word is all that is necessary. And there you have it. The Way And I Mean Waaaaay Over The Hill Gang is back to kick off yet another season of their unique brand of hockey. Or are they? Hmmm. Now that I think about it, given their frail condition, it’s hard to believe any of them will actually be able to muster up enough strength to drop a puck for the opening faceoff. What is a preventive mastectomy? People around the world were shocked to learn that actress and activist Angelina Jolie opted to have a double mastectomy in 2013 to reduce her risk of breast cancer. Jolie, who was 37 years old at the time of the procedure, reportedly learned that she carries a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which sharply increases her risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. In addition, the actress has a family history of cancer. Her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died of ovarian cancer in 2007 at the age of 56. By having a preventive mastectomy, Jolie reduced her breast cancer risk from 87 percent to 5 percent, according to an op-ed piece she authored in The New York Times. Jolie is not the only well-known actress to opt for a preventive mastectomy, as fellow thespian Christina Applegate had a similar procedure in 2008 after learning she had a mu-

tation of the BRCA1 gene. These highly publicized cases have left many women wondering if a preventive mastectomy is something they should consider. BRCA stands for "breast cancer susceptibility genes," a class of genes known as tumor suppressors, says the National Cancer Institute. Mutations in these genes have been linked to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. A person's risk of developing breast and/or ovarian cancer is greatly increased if he or she inherits a harmful mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2. Mutations in these genes could also put a person at increased risk for other cancers.

Genetic tests can check for mutations in BRCAgenes. During such a test, a blood sample is taken, and if a mutation is found, a person may get genetic counseling and work with a doctor to develop a plan of action. It is important to note that not all people with a genetic mutation will get breast cancer or ovarian cancer. The National Cancer Institute's "SEER Cancer Statistic Review" states a woman who has inherited a harmful mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 is about five times more likely to develop breast cancer than a woman who does not have such a mutation. Although there is no surefire way to determine if a person with a mutated

gene will develop breast cancer, many women who are considered high risk opt for a preventive mastectomy to reduce their risk. Women who have a family history of breast cancer, have received positive results from gene testing, have already had cancer in one breast, or have dense breasts that make testing difficult may want to get a preventive mastectomy. The decision to get a preventive mastectomy is not one to take lightly. Many breast centers are staffed with breast-health specialists, genetic counselors, breast surgeons, and reconstructive surgeons who can help patients make the best decision. Second opinions are strongly recommended for women considering a preventive mastectomy. Women should understand the options available to them if they have an extremely elevated risk of breast cancer or ovarian cancer. – MS

Tales of the Junction’s haunted past revealed at historical society pub crawl Did you know that the West Toronto Junction used to be haunted? A ghostly woman in white used to appear in two different houses in the Gunns Road and Keele Street-area to homeowners who had no idea who this person was, says Junction historical society president Neil Ross. In another instance, a man would wait at the corner of Keele Street and Dundas Street West appearing in flickering flames of the Subway Hotel – which long ago burned down. These stories and more will come to life as part of the West Toronto Junction Historical Society’s ‘Wild Wild Junction III Ghost Stories’ with help from Junction legends, journalist A.B. Rice, first librarian Elizabeth MacCallum, chief coroner Dr. G.W. Clendenan, chief of police and first mountie Josiah Royce, Const. Harper and Rev. T.E.E. Shore as they take audiences on

The West Toronto Junction Historical Society presents the Wild Wild Junction III Ghost Stories, a membership pub crawl and graphic novel release party, Sunday, Oct. 20 starting at 3 p.m.

a supernational pub crawl. The event takes place Sunday, Oct. 20 starting at Axis Bar and Grill, 3048 Dundas St. W., at 3 p.m. and continues at La Revolucion, 2848 Dundas St. W., and culminating at Shoxs, 2827 Dundas St. W. “History can always be fun

if it’s told by people who love it and there’s that passion among West Toronto Junction Historical Society members,” Ross told The Villager. This ghostly revival is a membership drive of sorts, Ross said. The event is free to Junction historical society members – a limited number of memberships can be purchased on Oct. 20 for $20. In January, the fee will increase to $25 for the year, however, those memberships purchased at the pub crawl will be good not only for the remainder of 2013, but for all of 2014 as well. The historical society has presented Wild Wild Junction on two other occasions. This one, however, is a new incarnation of the event. Some of the ghostly tales came from the society’s archives, while others were shared by local residents. As part of the event, community members will be invited to share their own ghost stories for a chance to win prizes. For further details, visit wtjhs.ca

CHARITY RACE: The Canadian Tire Run For Playgrounds took place Saturday with three runs; 1km, 5km and 8km at High Park. (Clockwise from top left) Rod Maney and Abernethy Maney make their way through the park during the 8km run, enjoying the fall colours as they move along; The firstplace finish in the 8km run went to James Watson; Runners warm up prior to the race and earned these medals once they crossed the finish line. This was the first Run for Playgrounds event held in High Park. About 500 people attended what organizers hope to be an annual event. As of Villager press time, a final fundraising amount was not known. All funds raised from the run will benefit the Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation. Staff photos/IAN KELSO
