The time for change has come to Parkdale High-Park as the red wave washed over the riding. It was a close race, but constituents chose Liberal Party candidate Arif Virani as their new Member of Parliament. “I’ve always known I wanted to do this and now I’m about to do this and it’s Liberal Arif a bit scary, but Virani praises it’s exciting,” V i ra n i t o l d Peggy Nash’s The Villager record in as supporters Parliament cheered and patted him on during speech the back. “This win, it’s surreal, it’s humbling and it’s flattering.” It was a close race with just 1,123 deciding the riding’s winner. He beat incumbent Peggy Nash with 42 per cent (24,678) to 40 per cent (23,555). Nash has served as MP since 2011 (she also served from 2006 to 2008). At Virani’s campaign victory party at the Jekyl and Hyde Pub, 2340 Dundas St. W., the room was filled with supporters cheering for every Liberal who won across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) as well as Virani. >>>ndp’s, page 14

Designer creates fashion line for wheelchair-bound people Izzy Camilleri launches Access10 campaign to raise money for StopGap Foundation and end discrimination LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Renowned Canadian designer Izzy Camilleri says her outlook on life completely changed once she turned her focus from runway fashion to dressing those who rely on a wheelchair. Camilleri is the founder of the Junction-based ‘IZ,’ a provider of sophisticated and functional clothing for people with physical disabilities, most often confined to a wheelchair. “This whole experience has turned me into a much more compassionate human being,” Camilleri told The Villager during a conversation at her studio. Her clients are often reliant on others for the most basic of every day tasks that many of us take for granted, she said. “They need help to get dressed, to eat. It’s unbelievable what they put up with,” Camilleri said. “And then they are forced to deal with discrimination.” Discrimination, for example, when trying to access their local coffee shop, but are stopped because of a twoinch curb. That’s why Camilleri has launched a campaign called ‘Access10’ alongside her 2015 fall collection. With every item purchased, IZ will donate 10 per cent of total gross sales toward the StopGap Foundation. StopGap’s mission is to create a world in which every person can access every space through “fun and engaging” projects that not only raise awareness, but remove barriers (stopgapblog. blogspot.ca). “IZ was created to give

Izzy Camilleri, renowned Canadian designer and founder of IZ, a provider of sophisticated and functional clothing for people using wheelchairs, is proud to announce a new campaign to raise funds and awareness for accessibility called Access10.
people with disabilities access to beautiful fashion,” Camilleri said. “Now we want to take it one step further. When you buy from IZ, you’re helping to make the world a little more accessible for everyone.” As part of the campaign, Camilleri has designed a custom ‘Fashion IZ Freedom’ T-shirt. Available in grey and dark charcoal, the T-shirts are prewashed to guarantee that soft, “favourite T-shirt” feel, she said. One hundred per cent of profits from the shirts, available for sale online, will go toward the mission of creating a more accessible world. Camilleri is encouraging everyone to take a ‘seated selfie’ wearing their T-shirt and then to share it on social media to help spread the word. Belle Owen, who works
for Camilleri, has a condition called pseudoachondroplasia, a genetic bone growth disorder. She relies on a wheelchair for mobility. Owen sings the praises of not only Camilleri’s designs, but also for her efforts on behalf of people with physical challenges. “Having someone like Izzy, who does not have a disability, but creates clothing and speaks out on issues with those who do have disabilities, makes a big difference,” Owen said in a statement. “It goes beyond the clothes, it gives people the opportunity to express themselves.” Camilleri was designing for the pages of Vogue magazine and film industry A-listers such as Angelina Jolie, David Bowie and Jennifer Lopez, when she was introduced to the late writer Barbara Turnbull, who was left a quad-
riplegic at the age of 18 when she was shot during a robbery at the convenience store she was working at. “She was looking for someone to design a custom cape,” Camilleri said. Camilleri then designed a winter coat for a young woman, a circus aerialist, who broke her neck during a practice. “She told me, ‘Every time I wear your coat, people stop me,’” Camilleri said. “I’d given her a sense of self. A lot is stripped away when your choices are limited.” That was the epiphany that led Camilleri to create IZ. She designed her first collection in 2009 and a year later opened her studio in the Junction.

It’ll be a last hoorah of sorts for the West Toronto Junction Historical Society’s (WTJHS) Neil Ross, who finishes his presidency in May. Ross will embody the character of Junction journalist A.B. Rice as part of a WTJHS fundraiser, the ‘Legends of the Junction Historical Talk Show,’ Sunday, Oct. 25 at Shox’s Billiards Lounge. Ross, as Rice, will be one of an array of historical characters the talk show will feature. Rice began writing about the area when he arrived as editor of John Taylor Gilmour’s York Tribune in 1888 and covered it through his columns ‘Stray Thoughts on Matters of Public Concern’ in the West Toronto weekly until he died in 1948. The talk show debuted as part of the Junction’s centennial celebrations in 2008. On April 14, 1908, the Junction became its own city, the City of West Toronto, which it remained for a year and 19 days. “We’ve done it once or twice since then. I thought it’d be great to resurrect it,” Ross told The Villager. Ross said he was inspired to do so with help, in part, from relatively new WTJHS member Trevor Parkins-

Sciberras. “One day, in late spring of 2015, this kid showed up to a meeting in historical garb wearing a monocle,” Ross recalled. Parkins-Sciberras is a history buff, who’s into Steampunk, a literary movement combining Victorian fiction with a science fiction edge. “He came and said I’ve just discovered Junction history; I want to do historical videos,” Ross said. Ross, as A.B. Rice, will interview such guests as the Junction’s first librarian Elizabeth MacCallum, played by local historian and activist Madeleine McDowell, and Chief of Police and first Mountie Josiah Royce. T h e t a l k s h ow, Ro s s described, will be David Letterman-esque. Parkins-Sciberras, for his part, has been busy shooting videos for the show. Following the talk show, there will be a Victorian/ Steampunk-themed dance party. Those who attend wearing historical attire have the chance to win prizes. The talk show is all ages. Admission is $15 at the door. Visit wtjhs.ca and SteamPunk Junction on Facebook for a complete rundown of the talk show’s segments.

t appears voters believe Justin Trudeau is, in fact, ready to become the Prime Minister of Canada as the red tide of Liberal support swept the country and all of Toronto Monday night. With a majority government, the federal Liberals now have a strong mandate to implement their policies and the priorities they outlined during the 78-day national election campaign. It’s time now for Toronto residents, who voted in the Liberals in all 25 local ridings, to make sure the election promises and commitments to invest in our city are kept by the Prime Minister Designate and the newly elected MPs. Start by getting to know your local Liberal MP, many of whom are first-time politicians. As it is a government, they will be our view majority your voice in Ottawa for the next four years. City’s priority And while majority governare more stable, it becomes issues must ments even more important to hold the be addressed party in power accountable to run an agenda that is in the best interest of those who elected them into power. The next four years with a co-operative federal government that is friendly to major cities can go a long way in building community at a very local level. Just as Mayor John Tory outlined in his congratulatory speech, Trudeau’s commitment to cities includes investments in building transit, affordable housing, repairing social housing and other major infrastructure needs. These are all top priority issues for Toronto, which can’t be addressed by just one level of government. In a city as large and complex as ours, the federal government must be a major player in helping provide a solution to these ongoing issues. Since we also have a majority Liberal government in Ontario, we are hoping they can work very well together to the benefit of Toronto and other big cities in the province. Even if you didn’t cast a ballot for the Liberals, the incoming MPs are elected to represent all constituents in their riding. Keep them accountable to the “positive politics” that Trudeau seemed to champion throughout the campaign. Tory said he is looking forward to working with Trudeau on Toronto’s issues. So should we.

Cold fall weather passing with flying colours It was chillier than usual for mid-October last weekend. Not surprisingly the unseasonable weather kept a lot of the locals inside. Too bad. They missed a golden opportunity to check out some great fall scenery. Take my favourite nature trail, Cedarvale Ravine. The dip in temperature provided a multitude of stunning sights that one normally doesn’t experience this time of year. I didn’t have to go far for my first breathtaking view either. After just one step on the venerable path, I immediately came across a majestic yellow-bellied turtleneck. I couldn’t believe my good fortune. It was on a park bench behind the Heath Street entrance of St. Clair West station. I didn’t want to scare it away, so I tip-toed over in hopes of getting a closer shot with my camera. It appeared to be whistling what sounded like the OK, Blue Jays theme song. I listened for a few verses,
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY but then was distracted by a an eye-catching dark black double-breasted trench coat. And get this: it was standing upright against a tree warbling with a peach pullover. I kid you not. Wow. I’d been out for all of a minute-and-a-half and I’d seen all this already? I felt like I was in selfie heaven. As much as I enjoyed the show, I was eager to see what else was out there, so I headed down the hill. Within seconds, a flurry of baby blue toques went whizzing by. On their heels was a flock of white long-sleeve shirts. Both groups came and went in the blink of an eye. I made a mental note not to blink anymore. I wanted to make absolutely sure I didn’t miss a thing. I moseyed along and as I looked at the steps leading to a bridge high above, I
caught a glimpse of four sets of maroon mountain boots scurrying up in perfect sync. There was a quartet of matching red and white scarves around their necks flapping away in the breeze. I rounded the bend and staring at me was a pair of deep brown wooly socks. They were peeking out from beneath some pale gray sweatpants. I was snapping away furiously. I knew I would need to have proof. No way anybody would believe me if I said I had seen all this stuff in one morning. As I headed past the fenced off area for dogs, the pooches were barking away at each other and at the pink mittens and gold gloves watching them. Over the hill next to the tennis court I saw a beige cardigan perched next to a lavender hoodie. On the soccer field across from them a green vest was enjoying the company of an orange balaclava. As I continued on I came
across a cornucopia of turquoise trousers, lavender sweaters and purple parkas. It was surreal I tell you. I was there until early afternoon and then headed home. On the TV weather report the meteorologist said temperatures would be back to normal for the weeks ahead. So I raced back to the ravine. As fate would have it, that yellow-bellied turtleneck was still at the same park bench. I joined him for a more few choruses of OK, Blue Jays and then called it a day. And what a day it turned out to be. No question the season always gets good marks, come rain or come shine. But last weekend clearly proved fall will pass with flying colours when you add a little cold into the mix, too. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System
What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the

federal election
NDP’s Nash not surprised by defeat >>>from page 1 As Virani walked in with his wife and two young sons, the Black Eyed Peas song “I’ve Got A Feeling” blared from the speaker to pump up the crowd, and a large Canadian flag could be seen swaying above the heads of the audience. “It’s incredible to think that the keys at 24 Sussex will be changing hands.” During his speech, which focused mainly on the Liberal party’s success as a whole rather than his own, Virani noted his respect for Nash. “I’ve got a lot to learn from Peggy Nash. Anyone who can serve and serve nobly in a riding and serve in the House of Commons for six out of the
last nine years deserves our respect and our gratitude,” Virani said to an eruption of applause. “You don’t serve a riding for six years and not have something to offer. People had an appetite for change,” Virani added. “This was never about me versus Peggy. It’s about the community.” Nash told The Villager the loss didn’t come as a shock to her. “I knew it was going to be tight. I thought that the Liberals and Arif Virani ran a very good campaign. They worked very hard,” she said. “I knew they were running to win, and they needed everything to go right and it went right for them.”
By the end of his speech Virani not only thanked his family for being “his rock throughout the campaign”, he also thanked his supporters for believing in him and a believing in a better Canada. “You don’t get here alone,” he said. “You guys all believe in something; you believe in a better country, you believe in a better leader, you believe in a better party, you believe in a better riding and perhaps you believe in a better candidate. Thank you for believing in me.”

Passed on from generation to generation, the art of weaving, one of the oldest-known forms of textile production, was widely practiced among Ukrainians. Working on vertical and
