TTC not tearing up Roncesvalles LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will have to do some minor tweaking of Roncesvalles Avenue to accommodate its new streetcars, however, the

work will be minor and won’t take place until 2016. “I know there was concern that there was a plan to tear up Roncesvalles Avenue again,” TTC spokesperson Brad Ross told The Villager. Yet the street will not be

torn up, he said. Instead some adjustments will have to be made to the streetcar platforms – or bumpouts as they are called. There are 12 along Roncesvalles Avenue and they will either have to be lowered or raised, depending on the

existing height of them, Ross said. This is because the new streetcars are accessible and contain ramps to accommodate wheelchairs, walkers, strollers and the like. “If the (bumpout) is too low, >>>PLANNED, page 7

The Bloor West Village Idiots cycling team has a motto: ‘Nobody fights cancer on their own.’ “The fact of the matter is, no one gets through cancer on their own – you need a support network,” said long-time team member and avid cyclist Doug Evans. The Weston area resident is all too familiar with this adage. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells, in 2008. The following year, he decided to participate in The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer benefitting the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. “I’d been a cyclist,” Evans told The Villager. “I thought, ‘this sounds like a good fit for me.’ I’d done a number of events before.” And, so, he approached RPM Total Fitness in the Junction, which boasts a spinning studio, for help setting up a training program. MP Peggy Nash describes ‘very frightening’ lockdown in Ottawa LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com At press time yesterday afternoon, Parkdale-High Park Peggy Nash remained in lockdown in a safe location at Parliament Hill after a shooting attack in Ottawa. “We were in our caucus meeting, I had left for a moment and was in a nearby corridor. I heard the shots, but didn’t know what it was at first,” Nash told The Villager by phone at about 1:45 p.m. “A security guard told me to take cover. It was very frightening. I didn’t know what was going on – there seemed to be lots of shots.” A tactical squad came through the house securing it, said Nash, who joined the rest of the caucus in a safe room. “We don’t know exactly what’s happening,” she said at the time. RCMP and Ottawa police officers

are on the scene. A Canadian soldier was killed and Parliament Hill security guard wounded Wednesday morning during the attack that police say involved more than one assailant. Sirens blared as buildings in the vicinity were put in lockdown while police and soldiers continued the manhunt. Police confirmed one suspect was shot and killed. Nash shared her experience via Twitter, saying security locked her in a room on the Senate side of the house, initially. “It’s a place that you have to go through security to get into the building,” Nash said. “I’ve never encountered any form of violence or someone bringing weapons like this before.” Nash said she is grateful for the soldiers and police officers that are keeping everyone safe. “They’re courageous and we’re

very thankful,” she said. “It’s a sad day when this happens, but we can’t let this undermine the work we do here in our democratic society.” Shootings took place at the National War Memorial and Parliament Hill, according to Ottawa police. No one had yet been arrested by Villager deadline. Police and emergency vehicles were stationed at the foot of the Peace Tower while Centre Block was being evacuated. RCMP warned people in downtown Ottawa that they should stay away from windows and roofs. Officers confirmed an initial call for shots fired came in at 9:52 a.m. - With files from Torstar News Service

Actor stars in Concord Floral at The Theatre Centre Mainspace on Queen Street until Oct. 26 LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Bloor West and Dufferin streets resident Eartha Masek-Kelly, 18, stars in Why Not Theatre’s presentation of Suburban Beast’s Concord Floral this month. Masek-Kelly is one of 10 teens performing and tweaking the dialogue for Concord Floral, which runs until Sunday, Oct. 26 at The Theatre Centre Mainspace, 1115 Queen St. W. Masek-Kelly plays two characters, the role of a teenager and of a fox. While she said taking on both roles is “tricky, both characters are sassy” and fun to embody. there, it sets off a chain of events that can’t be stopped. Concord Floral is the re-imagining of Giovanni Boccaccio’s medieval allegory The Decameron, but takes place in a contemporary Toronto suburb. As in Boccaccio’s original, in which 10 teens flee to an abandoned villa when the Black Death sweeps through medieval Florence, 10 youth flee to the abandoned greenhouse when a mysterious plague descends upon their neighbourhood. The story differs in Concord Floral because the plague is brought on by the teens

themselves. The first professional play for the cast, the teens spent much of their high school career working on the production. More than three years in the works, Concord Floral’s development has been a collaboration between artist Erin Brubacher, choreographer/dancer Cara Spooner and playwright Jordan Tannahill.

Civic leadership is a critical issue T

oronto remains a city with strengths and advantages that others around the world can only emulate. However, the lack of true political vision has disrupted serious progress on key issues such as economic and transit development. Political culture has been fractious and detrimental to building trust in leadership for the city moving forward. All of this means civic leadership has become a key issue in Monday’s municipal election. We had a record number of advance poll votes cast this year. The 161,147 votes cast is far more than ever before at advance polls. We hope that means residents take this election seriously and have taken the time to seriously question candidate platforms. Here are key issues a voter needs to consider: Leadership: Thankfully, there has been no major pre-election alignment between mayoral and council candidates. We need council members who openly fight for the needs and desires of their individual ward – and are not expected to blindly fall into line with mayoral direction. This city needs a leader who can work with council members from the most liberal to the most conservative. We need a mayor who can lead a council that works together – and leaves the cheap shots and uncalled-for language and accusations behind. We need a mayor who speaks in facts – and can competently back up their view. That mayor must expect the same from council members. A mayor must work aggressively and respectfully with provincial and federal governments. A mayor must build a profile on an international level and be respected as an ambassador on behalf of every resident. Transit: It would be hard to find two Torontonians who believe there is a focused plan for our transit future. Confusion, hostility and easily debunked transit plans have ruled four years of discussion. Yet, congestion increases. Transit builds take decades to complete. Meanwhile, the quality of life in Toronto erodes with no clear direction. Economic development: As do most major cities, Toronto suffers from unacceptable unemployment rates and is lacking in opportunity for the socially disadvantaged. We face stiff competition all the time from other lesser communities who woo industrial and retailer developers. If asked what issues were priorities of this past council, would economic development even rise to the surface? Toronto needs a new, unified vision for the future. We believe John Tory is the only candidate who can deliver the unity, the vision and the results the city needs. That said, it’s you who does the voting. Please take the time to study the platform of your mayoral and council candidates. Consider the past four years simply lessons learned, and choose wisely on Monday. t is something of a cliché to say a municipal election marks a crossroads for a city. But after four years of the Ford family’s wild reign at Toronto City Hall, any kind of road seems a relief. Based on the polls, a small majority of voters believe themselves to have found that road in the form of John Tory. Fiscally conservative, gracious of manner and civically engaged, the former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader, business executive and talk show host has presented himself as an agreeable antidote to the destructive melodrama at city hall. Tory would follow the rules. He would maintain cordial and professional relationships on council and with other levels of government. His history of volunteer work on matters of social inclusion make it clear that he could be expected to

david nickle the city govern from a fiscally conservative centre. A Tory mayoralty would be an improvement. Elements of his platform, however, make him maddeningly difficult to endorse. Key among these is the $8 billion (or so) SmartTrack surface rail plan that has been roundly, and soundly, criticized for its vague and risky tax increment financing plan. Tory’s relentless defense of the plan is a serious worry. If it fails, as seems all too possible, taxpayers will be on the hook. With that said, SmartTrack is an improvement on the plan put forward first by Mayor Rob Ford and then his brother Doug, to pursue an unsupportable plan to build 32 kilometres of subway and

Elements of (Tory’s) platform, however, make him maddeningly difficult to endorse.

kill the remaining planned light rail lines. Which brings us to Olivia Chow. For those voting strategically, third-place Chow seems a terrible bet. Yet Chow offers the most fiscally conservative and civically constructive platform in the race. Chow is promising tax increases marginally higher than Tory’s, and a land transfer tax premium for $2-million-plus real estate transactions. But she would push to return the costly Scarborough subway to its provincially-funded light rail predecessor, and put the billion dollars in tax revenue slated for the subway toward a necessary

but unfunded downtown relief line. Some aspects of Chow’s platform might not come off as planned — notably, her plans to increase bus service and build affordable housing. But these failures would leave Toronto in a status quo – not in potentially ruinous debt. Olivia Chow may have proven to be an inexpert campaigner and an often tenuous debater. But on Oct. 27, the debating and campaigning is over for nearly four years. And Chow’s work as a city councillor and Member of Parliament has demonstrated an ability to lead allies and parlay with opponents that Toronto’s next mayor will need in spades. By those measures, Olivia Chow is the best choice on Oct. 27. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Reach him on Twitter: @DavidNickle

Reader remembers the damage and the kindness after storm To the editor: Re: ‘Marking Hurricane Hazel’s 60th’, Oct. 16, The Villager. Like Madeleine McDowell I also lived on Humbercrest Boulevard on the east side. In 1954 I was in Grade 9 at Runnymede Collegiate and that stormy Friday I was ready to go to the movies with my friends but my mother said a definite “NO”. When I looked outside on Humbercrest the wind and the water came down so hard you could not see the other side of the street. The noise was so loud from the wind it was like being in a wind tunnel almost all night long. After the storm, Dundas Street West from Scarlett Road to Prince Edward Drive was closed to automobile traffic until the bridge structure could be evaluated by the city engineers. The Bloor Street bridge over the Humber was also closed for the same reason. On Sunday, my father and I walked across Dundas to the

middle of the Dundas bridge and looked down at the river. Most of the old, narrow, onelane bridge had been washed away and the water was 40 feet up the new bridge’s support pillars. It was moving very fast with multiple kinds of debris: fridges, stoves, chairs, trees and tires were some of the things we could distinguish. I remember for many years afterward you could see how high the water had been because the pillars of the bridge had been scoured clean by the action of the water. washed away On the west side of the river down the dirt road there had been a small house and a hot dog and hamburger stand owned by people named Rhodes. Everything the family had was washed away including the house and hamburger hut. The other thing I remember about the hurricane is

that there was a mannequin manufacturer at Dundas and Gooch in the 1940s and 50s, across from the Dayton Rubber Factory. body in river One of the young boys on

Humbercrest Street went out to the hill above the river and thought he saw a mannequin. His father never told him it was a body. Three weeks after, my sister and my mother and I were walking along the now very calm and shallow river. In the

50-foot oak and maple trees on the east side, 30 feet in the air, there were stoves and refrigerators caught up in the branches. On t h e Mo n d a y a n d Tuesday after the storm many of the senior boys at Runnymede Collegiate left

school to help the firemen and other rescuers look for the bodies of people at East Drive and Scarlett Road. I still see some of those men who helped and they remember those days very vividly. Donna Firman

Irish immigrant thought rain was typical weather To the editor: Re: ‘Marking Hurricane Hazel’s 60th’, Oct. 16, The Villager. Yo u r s t o r i e s a b o u t

Hurricane Hazel reminded me that my father had just arrived in Toronto and wrote to my mother and I in Ireland about the terrific rain he had

to drive through one October evening. “You should see the kind of storms they have in this country,” he said.

It wasn’t until I came in 1956 that I realized it had been the hurricane – something we never had in Ireland. Ruth Grier

Trees along river bank bore the storm’s discards To the editor: Re: ‘Marking Hurricane Hazel’s 60th’, Oct.16, The Villager. I was just a kid when Hurricane Hazel hit Toronto in 1954. We had just moved to Leaside (now living in Etobicoke) and lived close to

the Don Valley where we kids loved to play and explore. I remember the heavy rains and winds. but fortunately our house was spared any damage. The next day, being clear and sunny (if I remember properly), we went to have a look in the valley and was

amazed to see the water level to the top of the banks and to the top of the trees. Over time, as the water levels receded, you could see every manner of debris in the branches, be it cloth, paper, plastic, metal or whatever. The trees looked like veritable Christmas trees.

Even years later you could still see remnants of junk up in the trees. I’ve wondered if some archeology students could even now, after 60 years, find souvenirs of Hurricane Hazel in the trees or on the river banks. Kal Raudoja

Planned work will only take a few days >>>from page 1 it’ll make the ramp too steep. If it’s too high, the streetcar won’t be able to deploy the ramp,” Ross said and confirmed the road will not be torn up, nor will it close. There might be a partial lane closure, however, the TTC will provide ample warning as to when this would take place. “The 504 King streetcar is slated to begin service in late 2016 or early 2017,” Ross said. In June of 2009, Roncesvalles Avenue underwent a major reconstruction project that included the restoration of sewers, water mains, streetcar tracks and sidewalks. A network of

volunteers comprised of neighbours, business owners and organizations, under the moniker ‘Roncy Works’, seized the opportunity to make further streetscape improvements as well as undertaking a ‘Buy Local’ campaign in support of businesses as they endured the major reconstruction of the street. Roncesvalles Avenue officially re-opened to streetcars in July 2011. The original plans for the neighbourhood were modified and finalized in 2013 before the TTC had purchased its new streetcars. “ We’d b e e n h e a r i n g rumours that Roncesvalles was going to be ripped up again,” said Veronica Feihl, a

Roncy Works spokesperson. “We got wind that a (Ward 14 councillor) candidate was saying this. I thought, ‘This is completely wrong.’ I wanted to find out the truth for myself and got in touch with the TTC.” Feihl confirmed what Ross told The Villager – that only some minor alterations will be done of the platforms or bumpouts. And the work will take a matter of days, not months. Ross said the TTC is sensitive to further disruption to the Roncesvalles Village community and will keep any disruption to a minimum.

ALL-NEW 2015 GENESIS

TAKE CONTROL

Ever wonder what it’s like after you die? A Drink with Death – a Morbid Cabaret debuting in Toronto at the Cameron House tonight, provides a glimpse into the world of purgatory with the help of some of the city’s top indie folk musicians, including the Juno-nominated Christopher Weatherstone, who is not only co-starring, but co-presenting the zombie cabaret. “It’s going to be lots and lots of fun,” Weatherstone, a Junction resident, told The Villager. Weathertone, a member of the self-described “BalkanKlezmer-Gypsy-Party-PunkSuper Band,” said the morbid cabaret has no plot and tells not one story, but several stories. “The concept of the play is, you’re in a bar and you’ve died – or almost died or are near

24

death. It’s a waiting room for hell,” Weatherstone said. “All these guys are sitting around dead. They look like they’ve just died and they realize they’ve got an audience.” The dead are from all points of history, different eras and all walks of humanity and they want to tell their stories. Some have delusions about how they’ve died; others died justifiably. The play, Weatherstone said, answers the question, ‘What is it like to die?’ The original production ran at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in New York City where it was well received earlier this year. The Toronto production differs from its American counterpart because it has its own local musical cast. “All the characters write their own stories,” said Weatherstone, adding he wanted to present “a uniquely Toronto experience.” “I want to get people into the Halloween spirit,” he

said. There will be no boundary between performers and patrons as the cast recount their tragic tales throughout eternity amidst the audience to explore the mysterious “other side.” It’s anyone’s guess who audience members will be sitting beside. Seize the opportunity to share a drink with the dearly departed, Weatherstone said. The Friday, Oct. 24 performance includes an after-show all-night party, Weatherstone said. The Saturday night production includes a separate burlesque show and can be purchased as a combination ticket. A Drink with Death premiers Oct. 23 and runs until Oct. 30 Wednesday to Saturday at 8 p.m. at The Cameron House, 408 Queen St. W. Tickets $18, $10 for students (children under 13 will not be admitted due to mature content).

Tips For Avoiding the Flu This Season Advice to stay healthy from Toronto Central CCAC Once again flu season is around the corner and many of us are bracing for this time of year when so many become ill. While all of us are subject to the symptoms of a nasty bout with the flu, there are specific people who are particularly vulnerable. Young children and the elderly who contract the flu can suffer serious health effects as a result.

IS IT A COLD OR IS IT THE FLU? Often, people mistake a common cold with the flu. While they are similar as they are both respiratory illnesses, they are caused by different viruses. The symptoms of both can lead one to believe they’ve been afflicted by one or the other due to these similarities. Generally speaking, a bout with the flu is much worse than with the common cold and it’s not rare for sufferers of the flu to experience symptoms such as aches and pains, fever, fatigue and dry coughing. As well, flu symptoms are more intense. Because colds and flu share many symptoms, it can be difficult to tell the difference between each illness based on

symptoms alone. If required, special tests must be administered within the first few days of symptoms appearing to determine whether the sufferer has the flu or the common cold.

FLU FACTS • Flu is very contagious and can spread quickly • The flu can be passed on to others who may be at risk of serious complications before you even know you are sick • Flu viruses change each year. Experts create a new vaccine to protect you each flu season. • You can’t get the Flu from the flu vaccine. • The Flu vaccine is safe. • By getting the flu vaccine, you protect yourself and others The Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) provides a number of tips for their clients and the public about how to avoid the flu this year. Following are some simple ways that will decrease your chances of contracting the virus. 1. Get the Flu shot – If you haven’t been hit by the flu bug yet, get the flu shot. Many doctor’s offices, hospitals and medical clinics will provide the shot during this time of year. Inquire about getting it done early in the season for greater protection.

2. Wash Your Hands Often – Increased hand-washing has been proven to be an effective tool in the fight against the flu and similar viruses. Remember to wash your hands when you’ve had contact with surfaces and items that are touched by many. 3. Wipe and Sanitize – Keep surfaces that you’re in contact with frequently germ free. Sanitize with disinfecting wipes and keep alcoholbased hand sanitizer close by during this time of the year. 4. Sleep – It’s been proven that lack of sleep can adversely affect one’s immune function, making it more difficult to avoid colds and flu. Make sure to get enough rest so that you’re strong enough to ward of seasonal viruses. 5. Increase Fluid Intake – Drinking extra fluids, particularly water, will keep you hydrated and will decrease the likelihood of coming down with the flu. During winter months, make an extra effort to get enough fluid in order to ward off the virus. Ministry of Labour finds fault with TTC bus bike racks A recent Ontario Ministry of Labour ruling means cyclists for the time being cannot make use of the bike racks found on most TTC buses. The ministry ordered the TTC to lock the bike racks found on the front of its Orion VII and Nova articulated buses because of sight line concerns when the racks are full. Until the issue is resolved, the TTC will allow bikes on board its buses, if there’s enough room.

Recognizing the signs of breast cancer may save your life As with many types of cancer, breast cancer is most successfully treated when detected early. Death rates are declining as a byproduct of heightened awareness of breast cancer over the last 25 years and the increasing emphasis on screening. ‘Everyone signs up for it because they have a unique reason’ says captain >>>from page 1 Bloor West Village resident Tom Ostler, a captain of The Bloor West Village Idiots, and joined the team. “The 12-week training program is pretty unique,” Evans said. “We focus on people who want to do this ride, We help them through every aspect of the event. We’ve had some real success stories.” This month marks the Ride’s Team Up Challenge, a campaign designed for the purpose of growing a team’s membership and promoting the spirit of teaming up to conquer cancer. The campaign continues until the end of October. “Everyone signs up for it because they have a unique reason. Cancer is not the only terrible disease, but it’s the one that landed on my doorstep,” Evans said. “Cancer has touched a lot of people’s lives.” Evans said he has experienced the advances in research funded by events like

The Ride to Conquer Cancer. In the mid-1990s, those diagnosed with multiple myeloma would be given roughly 16 to 20 months to live. “I was diagnosed in 2008. I was told it was not curable, but it’s treatable,” said Evans, who had a stem cell transplant in 2009 and another one in August. “The process is the same, biology is what it is, but the treatment options, the drugs are substantially different. There are less side effects and they’re more effective. I’m the beneficiary of someone else’s contribution to the research.” You’re either part of the solution or you’re not, he added. Evans’ team member Ostler calls him the “biggest ambassador that the Ride to Conquer Cancer could ever hope to have.” “He has recruited numerous riders over the past seven years, sets up winter training programs, maps out on-theroad training schedules to

prepare riders to accomplish the distance with ease, and he always has ideas to help riders with their fundraising,” Ostler said. Ostler says he is motivated to return year after year to participate because of the feeling that he and his team are making a significant difference. “And, it is a fun way to support a great cause. The team aspect is most important – getting together for group training rides, group fundraising events, and social events, and meeting all sorts of people out on the road during the event,” he said. This is not an elite cycling group, the two men stress. “We’re a bunch of idiots who like to get together and cycle and drink beer and have coffee,” Evans said with a chuckle. “We’re focused on the cause.”

‘Mutual admiration’ bonds students and seniors Bishop Marrocco’s intergenerational program bridges gap between young and old with hosted activities LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com It’s a ‘mutual admiration society’ for students in Bishop Marrocco Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School’s intergenerational program and the seniors they visit at the Loyola Arrupe Centre for Seniors, now operating as LA Centre for Active Living. The program, established by teaching assistant Flora Venezia connects teens and seniors with

the help of food about once a month at the centre at 55 Rankin Cres. in the Bloor Street West and Lansdowne Avenue-area. Recently, the students baked pies as a contribution to the seniors’ Thanksgiving feast – a cherry, pumpkin, coconut cream and banana pie, among other flavours. They served as many as 50 seniors as part of the celebration. “It brightens up our day,” said William Reid, a resident of the

“We felt really spoiled.” Reid says he enjoys learning about the students’ life – “what we missed when we were teenagers,” he said. “I had to work all through my teenage years,” recalled Reid. Tina Duong says she enjoys the students’ visits because it allows her to practice her English conversing with the teens. Mackenzie Da Costa, a Grade 10 student, has been a part of the intergenerational program since last April. “I thought it’d be fun to help out,” she told The Villager. The teens baked treats for both a Mother’s Day and Father’s Day lunch and visited Corn Fest at the centre. They recently helped build six picnic tables too. Da Costa has loved to cook since she was little, she said. The students get a kick out of learning from the seniors’ experiences as well. “They have a lot of stories to

tell,” said Da Costa. Venezia credits school resource officer Candy Graham, who also established the ‘Cooking with Cops’ program three years ago in partnership with ProAction Cops & Kids Toronto chapter. She is instrumental in helping the students prepare the baked goods. Some students are in the kitchen before school while others choose to bake after class. The LA Centre for Active Living, which opened its Rankin Crescent location in December 2012, is a membership driven, volunteer based community organization that’s led by a volunteer Board of Directors. It provides a variety of programs to fulfill the needs of those 55 years of age and older. Programs and activities at the centre include line dancing, Zumba, and a cardio strength and balance class.

That’s the question the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) is looking at with its review of the Energy Consumer Protection Act. The Act deals with energy retailing to low-volume consumers in the province. Just over 300 thousand residential and small business consumers in Ontario currently have contracts with electricity retailers; 362,000 have contracts with natural gas marketers. Please visit www.ECPAreview.ca and fill out the on-line survey to share your views on consumer protection with the OEB.
