High Park Library closed for renovations High Park Library will be on hiatus for an approximately three-week period starting this month for some renovations, including the installation of a self-service check-out. The branch closed this past Monday. “We’re hoping it’ll be three weeks,” said Toronto Public Library spokesperson Susan Martin. “The bulk of the construction will be complete by Nov. 12.” However, renovations are known to come with their share of unexpectedness, she added. The reason for the Roncesvalles Village branch’s closure is because work will include replacing the flooring in the front vestibule; reconfiguring the staff room and reconfiguring the front and second-floor computer desks. “It’s a pretty busy branch with lots of traffic in and out” ,” said Martin. “We’re reconfiguring the desk to give more space to move around, to improve the flow of traffic.” The self-service desk will be outfitted with a touch screen and library patrons only need their library card to check out items. “It’ll mean that people won’t have to wait. They can head straight to check-out and go,” said Martin. “The staff will still be there to help, if need be.” During the closure, patrons are encouraged to head to Parkdale library, the closest branch on Queen Street West. Those who have items on hold at High Park will be able to pick them up at Parkdale Library. For further details, visit www. torontopubliclibrary.ca

Top TTC officials told a skeptical capacity crowd at a public meeting last Thursday that they would do everything in their power to reduce the subway vibrations and noise along the Bloor corridor between Royal York and Keele stations. More than 100 people poured into the Westminster Room at the Old Mill – not only from immediate neighbourhoods, but further afield – swapping so-called war stories with each other before the community consultation meeting was called to order. Mountview Avenue resident Julie Thompson, one of the residents who has led the charge to see the problem remedied by the transit authority, said her 13-year-old daughter was woken up at two that morning to find her dresser shaking. “It is a problem. It’s a dynamic, complex issue,” said TTC CEO Andy Byford, who attended the meeting alongside TTC Chair Karen Stintz. “If it was that simple, we’d have fixed it some time ago. There will always be some noise.” Marc Bracken of Aerocoustics Engineering Limited, the outside contractor hired by the TTC to measure the vibration, attributed the higher-than-historical vibration and noise levels to corrugated subway rails. He said irregularities on subway rails and train wheels give rise to noise and “ground-bourne” vibrations. “Flat or hollow wheels – wheel flats or defects, some can be quite >>>RESIDENTS, page 14

Life on ‘fast-forward’ just fine for senior volunteer LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Her joy is her family; her passion is her community. Mae Couzen-Duffy credits son Steven, daughter Lisa, grandson Kellan and particularly her husband for enabling her to lend her support and advocacy to fellow seniors not only in her neighbourhood, but across the city. “Here I am retired and I’m living on fast-forward. I’m one of those high-energy people,” said the 77-year-old Couzen-Duffy. “It’s an amazing thing. If I didn’t have the husband I do, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do. He’s a gentle soul.” Content with TV dinners and sandwiches waiting in the fridge for him, Couzen-Duffy’s husband is more than happy to see his wife immersed in her community, nota-

bly at the City of Toronto, with the Local Health Integration Network and St. Joseph’s Health Centre, which nominated her for an Ontario Senior Achievement Award. Couzen-Duffy was one of 20 seniors awarded for their outstanding contributions to their community through voluntary or professional activities. It’s the provinces highest recognition for seniors over 65 for their involvement in the arts, community service, volunteerism, education and fitness. “I was absolutely pleasantly surprised. It was an amazing day. The award is absolutely lovely, a beautiful award,” she said. She recalled the reception, “a lovely and quite formal day.” “It was nice to be at Queen’s Park in the Lieutenant Governor’s dining room,” Couzen-Duffy said. At St. Joe’s, Couzen-Duffy wears many hats. For four years, she served

as chair of its seniors population panel and then had a role on the Seniors Friendly Hospital Steering Committee, which focuses on determining how the hospital can provide services in a more senior-friendly way. “Our focus on seniors’ care at St. Joseph’s is a priority in our strategy to put patients first and enhance the health of the communities we serve, with seniors being one of the largest populations for whom we provide care,” said Catherine Cotton, the hospital’s administrative program director of medicine, ambulatory and seniors’ health. “Mae CouzenDuffy has been a strong and passionate advocate for seniors within our hospital community... We are both pleased and honoured to have successfully nominated her for this award.” Couzen-Duffy’s post-retirement

resume includes 4CATS, the Four Villages and Committed Action Team for Seniors, which has been advocating for an elevator at Keele subway station. “Many seniors are not vocal or mobile like I am. My goal is to fight the fight to affect change,” said Couzen-Duffy, who had just returned from a City of Toronto seniors’ forum. “I’m happy, I’m fortunate to be in good health. I have a very positive attitude,” she said. “I’m blessed not to be bored any day of my life.” Courtesy photo

TSO concertmaster embarks all for a good cause on tour with string quartet LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Unlike so many of his fellow musicians, Toronto Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Jonathan Crow says he never experienced an “aha” moment when he realized the violin was it for him. “I, unfortunately, don’t have one of those interesting stories,” confessed the newly minted Roncesvalles Village resident. “It was something I did as a kid. It was a fun thing to do.” Crow first picked up the violin at the ripe old age of six when his parents enrolled him, his older brother and sister in the Suzuki method, a style of teaching conceived by Japanese violinist Shin’ichi Suzuki. It wasn’t until third year university at McGill when he decided to audition for the Montreal Symphony Orchestra did the thought of a musical career begin to take shape. At the time, Crow had little experience in auditioning. “I wanted to see what the process was – it wasn’t stressful. I felt no pressure,” he admitted. That audition led to a spot in the acclaimed orchestra and led Crow

to think, “maybe this is something I should pursue.” In his new role as concertmaster of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, which he signed onto last year, meant a move to Toronto for the Prince George, British Columbia native. He just recently bought a house on Westminster Avenue. Currently on tour with his New Orford String Quartet, the group makes its Mooredale Concerts debut Sunday, Oct. 28 at Walter Hall, 80 Queen’s Park Cres. The Quartet is comprised of concertmasters of two leading orchestras – Crow and Andrew Wan of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra – as well as the Montreal Symphony’s principal cellist, Brian Manker and the Toronto Symphony’s assistant principal viola Eric Nowlin. The quartet will also perform a shorter version of the concert as part of Mooredale Concerts’ one-hour, interactive performance for young people ages six to 15 at 1:15 p.m. The ensemble performs for adults at 3:15 p.m. Tickets, $30, may be ordered online at www.mooredaleconcerts. com, or phoned in to 416-922-3714 ext. 103.

Residents must fight for village

The Bloor West Villager is published every Thursday at 175 Gordon Baker Rd., Toronto, ON M2H 0A2, by Toronto Community News, a Division of Metroland Media Group Ltd.

Looking for more community space

T

oronto’s neighbourhoods must be places where residents have opportunities to come together to learn, volunteer and play. This month’s Villager’s “Special Report” feature delves into the issues of affordable community space in the city and the challenges community groups have in gaining access. We looked at both a city-wide experience and assessed the situation in our own Bloor West Village community, looking at the issue from the standpoint of not only specific user groups, but also those who rent out their facilities for community use. At the root of this challenge is money – or lack our view of it. Earlier this year, the City must support cash-strapped City of Toronto, facing an outcry affordable options from local sports organizations, ultimately waived a for local groups permit fee hike for the use of city fields that would have added $1.5 million to the city’s coffers, but also would have threatened those organizations’ survival. According to a report from the Wellesley Institute, titled ‘Exercising Good Policy: Increasing Access to Recreation in Toronto’s 2013 Budget’ increasing access to recreational facilities is a smart investment, one that pays off with improved health of the populace. We agree the City of Toronto has a role to play in ensuring affordable access to community space for artistic and recreation groups. But perhaps there’s more to achieving this than by waiving fees. There are facilities in the city (places of worship come to mind) whose operators are looking for user groups as well. As a representative from a church in Weston noted, about the only challenge with being a landlord is getting the word out that space in the facility is available for rent. Would it make sense, then, for the city to have a centralized area online where not-for-profit facilities and potential user groups can be matched up? There is also reason for optimism. One of the recommendations in the Wellesley report calls for stable funding for youth outreach workers programs in order to enable positive health outcomes for our young people. Earlier this month, the province announced funding for 35 new youth outreach workers, with 20 of those spots earmarked for Toronto. While a provincial funding announcement from a minority government is not quite the definition of ‘stable’, that announcement, which took place at the Jane Street Hub in York, is a start and is recognition of the need for those kinds of investments in our communities. Smoking battle brewing at city hall

T

hose who think Toronto City Council’s tug-of-war flip-flopping under Mayor Rob Ford is a new development in Toronto politics either have short memories or are new in town. Municipal councils have flipped and flopped frequently and sometimes with great gusto. There were transit flipflops — remember when Metro Council, hamstrung on whether to build a Sheppard subway, voted to dig the tunnel but lay no tracks? No? Well let’s try an easier one. Remember smoking in bars and restaurants? Back in the day, it used to be commonplace to have your calamari dusted with nicotine. And your nonsmoking housemates could tell you’d been out on the town because of the way your coat stank. Second-hand smoke was a health issue, but for many, commerce and culture trumped science and medicine, and any attempts to protect diners and tipplers from cancer and asthma attacks met with concerted opposition. The first attempts at

smoking bans, in the mid1990s, happened in two former municipalities: North York, and Toronto. In both cases, councillors bowed to pressure from restaurant owners and the tobacco industry, and reversed the bans within months of them being put in place. It was only after amalgamation and with the urging of the city’s persuasive medical officer of health Dr. Sheela Basrur that council pushed ahead with a citywide ban. And that was a terrible fight in itself, as restaurateurs and bar-owners lined up to predict a veritable hospitality apocalypse if smokers were asked to take it outside. But the bylaw passed, its opponents placated with a soothing phase-in, and as it turned out Toronto’s restaurants and bars boomed, or at least flourished.

Eventually the provincial government decided to mirror Toronto’s ban and for a time, it seemed as though all was settled. This week, the Toronto Board of Health decided to ramp it up a notch. Having sent smokers outside, the board recommended starting consultation on a bylaw that would finish the job, to the extent that any bylaw can. If council approves it, smoking on outdoor patios, at sports fields, outside buildings and on hospital grounds would be illegal. So we’ll see how this goes. Now that provincial law has enshrined the city’s existing smoking bylaw, there’s no risk of that reversing. The question of what happens outside, however, is very much in play. And given everything else on our plate, the last thing Toronto needs is a bare-knuckled rematch of the smoking war. But given the crowd at city hall these days, that may be just what we get. n David Nickle is The Villager’s City Hall columnist. His column appears every Thursday. To the editor: It’s now apparent that Bloor West Village is under a concerted onslaught, I might even say assault, by a land developer called North Drive Investments (NDI). The company proposes to build two modernist condo towers on Bloor Street, one near the Parkview Gardens TTC station (12 storeys), the other next to the Grenadier Retirement home (10 storeys). In a series of meetings starting last spring the developer was told by the councillor, by city planners and by residents that these would be far too big and just don’t fit with the village. Nonetheless, NDI filed its application unchanged. It did agree to discuss changes with a working group of residents, the area planner and Councillor Sarah Doucette. Neighbours worried about jammed streets, lost privacy, lost sunlight and trees. The Bloor West Village Residents Association, which I represent, argued that two nearly identical towers of that mass and height would set an irresistible precedent for other re-development sites in the Village. City planners agree this could seriously undermine the village’s number one asset – its character of low-rise, early 20th century buildings. NDI’s response? After one meeting, the developer sent an email to the city planner (which was then forwarded to the working group) saying it’s taking its application and marching to the OMB. Residents never said a flatout no to redevelopment and tried to work with NDI on a compromise. But, the zoning is clear. The city’s mid-rise building guidelines are clear. Public opinion has been loud and clear. Yet, NDI refused to budge on anything, except for small details. The city planners will fight for the planning principles, but they need residents to give expression to the human values at stake here. Take a look at our proposal on this website: www. BWVRA.ca and see what is at stake and why you should speak out. Steve McNally

A staple in the Bloor and Dundas streets area for 16 years, Aslanidis started learning the trade at the age of 13 in his native Greece. After arriving in Canada at age 17, Aslanidis thought he was done making shoes. But the 1960s and 1970s saw huge demand for hand-made shoes, including sky-high platforms, and Aslanidis has been making custom shoes, top right, and orthotics ever since. Despite brisk business, he said few young people are entering the trade. Bottom right, Aslanidis fits a new heel on a shoe, which is first glued then hammered in place. Puppeteer Kristi White prepares the Fear of Nuclear Warheads for Clay and Paper theatre company's annual Night of Dread at Dufferin Grove Park this Saturday.

Share your frightful side at Night of Dread workshops In preparation for Clay and Paper’s Night of Dread, the theatre company is hosting a series of workshops leading up to the grand finale, Saturday, Oct. 27. For its 13th year, Clay and Paper is inviting the community to help build masks, giant puppets and shrines for the event, a parade through the darkened streets surrounding Dufferin Grove Park. Many volunteers are needed

to make the event a success. Interested people are invited to help create this year’s ‘Big Fear’ by making puppets, masks, images and costumes; perform as death dancers (experienced dancers only); be money catchers (people with big personalities), parade marshals on bikes, big fear puppet wearers and carriers. for him to wrap his head around this,” said Johnson. As for her, Johnson always knew from a young age that she wanted to perform. At five, she took up baton twirling, jazz and tap dancing. She didn’t start acting until high school. Unsure whether or not she wanted to go to university to study theatre, she took a year off and went to Paris to become an au pair. “It was an amazing experience, but I missed theatre so much,” she recalled. When Johnson returned, she auditioned for York University’s Bachelor of Fine Arts program from which she graduated. Johnson’s career has taken her around the globe, from Brantford to Singapore. She is excited to be performing at the Tarragon, Canada’s premier theatre for new Canadian playwrights. “It’s an exciting place,” she said. At that time there were rain and floods – the crops were ruined. Peggy is looking back on that time of her life. The play works its way through to the late 1960s. “We’re a lot alike but it’s an odd thing having her ideas in my brain,” Johnson says of her mother. “It’s an interesting challenge because I have my own perspectives of my grandparents as their grandchild. It’s hard to get inside the head of this battling teenager. Especially when you don’t live on a farm.” This internal struggle that her mother always had interested Johnson. Her grandfather, a farmer, had difficulty understanding why his daughter wanted to leave the farm to become an entertainer. “It was kind of impossible

Roncesvalles Village resident and actor-playwright Melody Johnson’s latest work is based on the true story of her mother, a beauty pageant winner in the 1950s. Johnson stars as her mother, Penny Ann Douglas, a young, optimistic farm girl desperate to escape the stallcleaning, hay-bailing drudgery of 1950s life with dreams of becoming a movie star. ‘Miss Caledonia’ opens Oct. 24 and runs until Nov. 22 at the Tarragon Theatre’s Extra Space, 30 Bridgman Ave. “She loved movie stars,” said Johnson of her mom, who grew up on a farm in Caledonia, Ont. “She noticed that a lot of starlets had won beauty pageants – it was one of the ways they got off the farm.” Actress-singer-dancer Debbie Reynolds, ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer and actor Halle Berry are just three examples of former beauty

queens, said Johnson. “My mom decided to hop on the trend. We still have the gowns and the sashes. At that time, you had to have a talent. We have her tap shoes and batons too,” said Johnson. Johnson’s mother died 18 months ago, but before her death, she did get to see a version of the show. The mother-daughter duo first started collaborating in 2006 when Johnson first asked her mom to write down her daily life on the farm and her journey on the pageant circuit. “I’ve always been intrigued by her experience,” said Johnson. “So, what she did was, write down in skeleton form: this is what I loved, this is what I loathed. She won a small amount of cash, a camera, a dinner with Tommy Hunter – Canada’s Country Gentleman – a huge sensation in the ‘50s and ‘60s.” Johnson’s mother once wrote to her idol, singer-actor Bing Crosby. He wrote back suggesting she pursue acting

Author wins book award for Roncy’s tale Author Andrew J. Borkowski, a Roncesvalles Village native, is still celebrating days after winning the 2012 Toronto Book Award. He was honoured Thursday, Oct. 11 during a ceremony at the Toronto Reference Library’s Bram and Bluma Appel Salon. His collection of short stories, Copernicus Avenue, set post Second World War, “conjures the smells and streetscapes of the Roncesvalles neighbourhood.” praised the Book Awards committee. “His interwoven short stories reach into the souls of all who have struggled through adversity.” The recognition “feels pretty amazing,” he admitted on the phone from his home in East York. “I’m slowly coming back down to earth – initially, it was a bit of a shock. You don’t find out ahead of time.” Borkowski admits that while he didn’t prepare a speech, he did make some notes. However, he couldn’t seem

to find them when he got to the podium so “I winged it,” he revealed. Copernicus Avenue is a life-long endeavor, inspired by his childhood memories, growing up on Galley Avenue where he played road hockey in back alleyways, attended St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School and escaped to High Park on Saturdays. “There’s a joke I like to tell, that several of these stories I’d told in bars to friends who’d say, ‘you’d better write these down or I’m going to steal them,’” said Borkowski chuckling. These stories began to take shape for the most part when the journalist and musician hit his late 30s and early 40s. One was written when Borkowski was an undergraduate student. “I think I was always a writer. I’ve been writing since I was a little kid,” he recalled; his first story written on a Toronto Hydro blue bound notebook, compliments of his father who worked at the utility company, titled: ‘My Adventures’ about his weekend exploits.

Author Andrew J. Borkowski, a Roncesvalles Village native, was honoured recently for winning the 2012 Toronto Book Award.

In elementary school, his science fiction stories were read out loud to the class by his teacher, Mr. Davis. “This made me cool, this got me street cred,” Borkowski said. Born in the mid-50s (at St. Joseph’s Health Centre as crews demolished Toronto’s old Sunnyside Amusement

Park on the .), Borkowski likes to refer to himself as a tail-end boomer. “I realized the extent of the world I grew up in was still on war footing. When I was a kid, TV glorified the war. It was a large part of my childhood,” he said. Copernicus Avenue was chosen from a list of finalists that included Dave Bidini for his biography Writing Gordon Lightfoot: The Man, the Music, and the World in 1972; Farzana Doctor for her novel Six Metres of Pavement; Michele Landsberg for her collection of columns Writing the Revolution and Suzanne Robertson for her collection of poetry Paramita, Little Black. This year marks the 38th anniversary of the Toronto Book Awards. Established by Toronto City Council in 1974, the awards honour authors of books of literary or artistic merit that are evocative of Toronto. Each finalist receives $1,000, and the winning author receives an additional $10,000.

Toronto residents are being asked to give more than a treat this Halloween. They can also hand out Change for Kids coins that give trick-or-treaters a chance to win prizes while supporting Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, Canada’s largest hospital for disabled children. “This is the first year we’ve ever run this program,” said Tracey Bailey, president of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation. “Our goal is to raise $100,000.” This is how the Change for Kids initiative works: People can buy an activated Change for Kids coin card for $5 at any Scotiabank branch in the GTA. Cards obtained from other distributors such as Spirit Halloween, Costco, Toys “R” Us, newspapers or magazines can be activated for $5 by visiting www.changeforkids.ca. People can then pop out the coins from their card and

give them to trick-or-treaters. Children and parents should be told to visit www.changeforkids.ca and enter their coin PIN code for their chance to win prizes. “The PIN number is important because Scotiabank will make an extra $5 gift to Holland Bloorview every time a PIN code is entered,” Bailey said. There are more than 500 prizes, including a weekend stay at Great Wolf Lodge for your family and nine other families of your choice. Change for Kids also features two events this weekend: a Halloween party at the Ontario Science Centre Saturday night (Oct. 27) and a “Monster March and Fun Fair” at Holland Bloorview on Sunday (Oct. 28). Admission to the Halloween party is $18 and includes access to all Ontario Science Centre exhibits, a family dance party and chances to win prizes. The event runs from 6 p.m. to midnight. The march and fun fair runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets

are $12.50. The march consists of a two-kilometre walk around the Holland Bloorview property. “About every 10 feet along the two-kilometre walk, there are treat stations and trick stations and all kinds of fun things for kids to do,” Bailey said. Net proceeds from Change for Kids go to Holland Bloorview. The hospital, located at 150 Kilgour Rd. in the Bayview and Eglinton avenues area, provides specialized programs and clinical care for youth with rehabilitation and complex care needs. It has about 600 inpatient admissions and 53,000 outpatient visits each year. “Change for Kids is not only about raising money right now for the programs and services of the hospital,” said Bailey. “But the word ‘change’ has been very specifically selected because it means that everyone is doing their part to change attitudes towards disability and to make the world more accessible for everyone.”

Road Sweeping Operation Toronto District Transportation Services is getting ready to perform sweeping operations on the streets ofToronto this fall. The purpose of the sweeping is to collect leaves that fall, naturally, onto the street. All streets will be swept on two occasions. The operation will continue until November 30, 2012.The map shows the area where the sweeping operation will take place. Please do not rake leaves onto the roadway or sidewalks from your property. Raking leaves onto the roadway is a by-law offence and could result in charges being laid. In addition, raking, blowing, placing or dumping leaves onto City property (sidewalk, roadway, catch basins, etc.,) can create dangerous conditions, cause flooding on the roadways or on property or cause accidents. Here’s how to put leaves out for collection: Use reusable containers (any rigid open-top container such as a garbage can, bushel basket, green plastic yard waste bin – no lids) or kraft paper yard waste bags. Put leaves at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your scheduled yard waste collection day. Check your collection calendar for your yard waste collection schedule and more helpful hints. Sorry, no plastic bags:The City does not collect leaves and yard waste in clear plastic bags or Halloween-themed plastic bags. (If you use these decorative bags, please empty the contents into one of the approved containers listed above before placing out for collection). Ways to reduce the amount of leaves you put at the curb for collection: Feed leaves to your backyard composter now, plus stockpile leaves to add as dry material during the winter. Here’s what the City collects as yard waste: Leaves, plant/tree trimmings, weeds and brush. Branches measuring less than three inches or 7.5 cm in diameter should be tied in bundles no longer than 4 feet or 1.2 min length and 2 feet or 0.6 m in diameter. Pumpkins and waste fruit from trees in your yard are also accepted. Sorry, we can’t accept: Soil, sod, grass clippings, logs or tree stumps. For more information on yard waste, please call 311 or visit us at www.toronto.ca/compost/yardwaste.htm If you have any questions about the service, call 311 Briar Hill Ave Broadway Ave

Residents demand TTC fix subway vibration issue >>>from page 1 bad,” Bracken said. According to Aerocoustics, the vibrations have tripled, even quadrupled, in some spots, over the past 12 years, however proper wheel and track maintenance will alleviate the problem, making it far more bearable. Jim Teeple, deputy chief of TTC operations, assured residents the transit authority maintains a strict regiment of inspection and maintenance, which includes a flat wheel detection system. It will begin localized rail and wheel replacement and will grind the corrugated rails. Stintz said she experienced first-hand what residents living along the

Bloor-Danforth subway corridor are dealing with having been invited into one person’s home. “I have an appreciation for what you’re going through,” said the councillor for Eglinton-Lawrence. “The TTC has not been responsive to the level you need.” Jane and Bloor West streetsarea resident Paul Chumak’s patience was running thin by mid-meeting. “I’m sure (the vibrations and noise) contravenes the (City of Toronto) noise bylaw,” he told Stintz and Byford. “We’re your boss. We pay your salaries. We pay taxes. We want this problem fixed – we don’t want to hear the nonsense about the budget.

Let’s not talk about this ‘til doomsday. Let’s fix it. How many years do we have to suffer? The noise is going on; the nonsense is going on. Maybe we should all consider a class-action lawsuit.” Byford said he understood the skepticism. “We’re committed to fixing this. Can I fix it just like that? No, but I am committed,” he said. Since February when Byford took the helm of the TTC, he said its philosophy remains to be open and receptive to new ideas, to be efficient and customer focused. “ We should be good neighbours,” Byford said, admitting that the TTC hasn’t always been those things.

SHUT OUT: Community groups struggle to find affordable space with permit fee increase CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com When the Etobicoke Basketball Association (EBA) got hit with news of a more than 333 per cent fee increase at half its gyms last month, the impact was forecasted as potentially catastrophic – especially to the 1,200-kid strong league’s lower income players. That’s because, like many volunteer-driven, not-for-profit sports organizations across Toronto, the bulk of EBA’s player fees go directly towards facilities permits. For such groups already operating on shoe-string budgets, any increase in permit fees – like EBA’s recent threefold bump-up at Toronto District School Board (TDSB) gyms – must be passed along to its participants, explained Joe DaSilva, an EBA board member and volunteer coach. “If we ran a middle class league, we would have no problem because we’d just increase our fees and people would say that was fine, but we’re working very hard to make (EBA) very inclusive of everybody,” he said, noting that many of the league’s players come from single-parent homes, making fees a barrier. “This ( TDSB increase) really affects how many kids we can afford to subsidize. We gather funds during the year to subsidize around 200 kids, because how do you turn away a kid who shows up with $50 and says, ‘This is all I have. I want to play basketball’?” EBA is far from Toronto’s only not-for-profit struggling with the search for affordable space – just as the TDSB isn’t the only provider struggling to accommodate them. The changes to the permitting fee schedule at the TDSB, explained board spokesperson Ryan Bird, came about because of a shortfall between the cost of supporting the community use of school space and the revenue collected. “Before these measures were voted on, we were subsidizing our permit holders to the tune of $11

playing fields and in the TDSB school facilities due to come down in just a short few months, sporting groups across the city have been left scrambling to see how best they can accommodate all their players – not just the ones who can afford the increase in fees they’ll be forced to levy upon them. At a time when sports groups are getting hit hardest, a report emerged this month from the Wellesley Institute, urging the City of Toronto to improve the health of its residents by increasing access to recreational outlets. “City councillors have opportunities, right now, to improve the health of Torontonians that don’t require massive investments or complicated agreements with other levels of government,” reads the report, entitled ‘Exercising Good Policy: Increasing Access to Recreation in Toronto’s 2013 Budget.’ “One of these opportunities is

quite simple: increase access to recreational services for Torontonians.” Coming as it does in the wake of yet another violence plagued summer in Toronto, the report and its recommendations are reminiscent of reaction to Toronto’s Summer of the Gun in 2005, when funding for community programming rolled in as a means to stop youth violence. One of the results of that influx was the Community Hub initiative in some of Toronto’s most underserved suburban neighbourhoods, where a lack of community space was compounding the challenges of social isolation and poverty faced by many residents. As part of their ongoing Building Strong Neighbourhoods Strategy – and in partnership with the province, key agency partners, and private funders – United Way Toronto has developed eight community hubs in priority neighbourhoods across the city, funding $1 million towards the capital costs of each hub, as well as contributing $150,000 annually toward each’s operating costs. “In looking at developing the Building Strong Neighbourhoods Strategy and hubs in particular, was the fact that, yes, space is a big challenge all over the city, particularly in suburbs,” said Lorraine Duff, United Way Toronto’s director of programming. “So we decided to ensure that some of this space was available for community agencies to use.” Duff said so far the community spaces within those hubs – including community kitchens, meeting rooms, and in the case of the Rexdale Community Hub, a gym - are always well used and in demand, especially by the kids. “We think it’s so essential to have opportunities for people to come together to meet their neighbours and to work together on issues that are important to their community, and that’s why we’re really excited to work with the community to have the space available,” Duff said. “One of the things we find is that space gets used up really quickly.”

Local soccer club looks to corporate sponsors to offset permit fees LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The Toronto High Park Football Club (FC) will be taking a “big hit” once the Toronto District School Board’s (TDSB) permit fee increase takes effect Jan. 1, 2013. As part of this year’s budget pro-

cess, the board approved a permit fee increase of more than 40 per cent, which is going to force the Toronto High Park FC to significantly raise its costs, according to president William Buckingham. “We are landlocked. Our club depends on TDSB fields and gyms. It’s a large part of the product we

put together,” Buckingham told The Villager. “We’ve done some preliminary studies. What we’re looking at is a 300 per cent increase – that’s something we cannot afford. We have no buffer for that. We’ll have to raise our fees significantly.” The non-profit organization, which boasts about 4,000 registered

players, had set its prices for the winter season before learning of the TDSB’s fee increase. “We have to be very, very careful how we cost out our programming,” said Buckingham. “We have undercharged for our programs. We are in a period of adjustment here. As a club, I’m going to have to explain

this to the membership. There will be people who won’t be able to afford the increase.” The club, said Buckingham, has been very good about keeping its costs low. The club is currently looking for corporate sponsors in addition to the local businesses who sponsor its house league teams.

Home renovations can affect your insurance Homeowners renovate for a variety of reasons. Some build additions to accommodate their growing families. Some replace outdated systems, making their house more energyefficient and eco-friendly. Still others want to increase the aesthetic appeal and market value of their homes. Whatever the reason you decide to undertake a renovation project, it's important for you to know that you are contractually obligated to report additions and other significant renovations to your insurance carrier. That's because renovations typically increase the value of your home; if you don't update your policy, you may fall short on coverage. The Insurance Bureau of Canada recommends that you insure your home based on its replacement cost, the amount it would cost to rebuild the house if it were destroyed. If you raise the value of your home by renovating, the replacement cost will rise as well. “If you remodel but don't report that activity to your insurance carrier, then you might not have enough coverage to pay any claims that arise,” explains Jeff Burke, president and CEO of Western

GTA realtors release Oct. mid-month resale figures

Financial Group. “If you remodel your kitchen but then a fire destroys much of it, your insurance isn't likely to pay all of the costs of restoring the kitchen unless you have updated your policy to reflect the new granite countertops, high-tech appliances, flooring, and the rest.” It's important to get your insurance company involved as your

renovation project is taking place so that you are covered in the event of accidents that may occur during the project, harming you or workers who may be involved. Also talk with your insurance representative about these three items: whether you are required to remain in your home while the work is being done, since some policies will not cover claims for acci-

dents that happen while the house is vacated; whether your renovation is extensive enough to change the classification of your building while work is being done (to that of a “building under construction”); and what impact unknown challenges (such as uncovering hazardous materials) could have on your insurance coverage.

GTA realtors reported 2,961 sales through the TorontoMLS system during the first 14 days of October. The number of transactions was down by 10.5 per cent compared to the same period in 2011. New listings were up by 5.5 per cent yearover-year to 6,505. “Some households have put their home purchase plans on hold in response to the higher cost of home ownership brought about by the recent changes to mortgage lending guidelines,” says TREB President Ann Hannah. “Both first-time buyers and existing home owners have been affected, given that sales were down across

house types and geography.” The average selling price for sales reported from October 1 through October 14 was $501,146 – up by almost six per cent in comparison to last year. “The average selling price grew well above the rate of inflation in the first half of October due to relatively tight market conditions from a historic perspective. However, the market continued to become better supplied, pointing toward a slower pace of price growth as we move into 2013,” says Jason Mercer, TREB’s Senior Manager of Market Analysis.

Join in the ensembles at the Kingsway Conservatory The rush that comes from making music together is indescribable, not to mention the tangible benefits - listening skills, blending, phrasing, articulation, tuning and tone development, to name a few! The Kingsway Conservatory of Music, located at 2848 Bloor St. W., actively creates opportunities for musicians young and old to collaborate as a means of building skills and experiencing the joy of playing together. The Kingsway Children’s Choir & Drum Circle, GLEE Club, Kingsway Children’s Orchestra, Kingsway Chamber Strings and Adult Drum Circle are established ensembles that continue to build momentum, growing in numbers and in musicality. KCM’s Youth String Quartet is evolving as an ensemble in demand with its diverse repertoire and high musical standard. Among the exciting new offerings at KCM this season is the Kingsway Chamber Singers, a select ensemble

of seasoned choristers that explores more challenging part-singing, but with the same verve as the younger children’s choir. Other new ensembles taking shape this fall include a Guitar Ensemble, Saxophone Ensemble, Cello Choir and Flute Choir. These intimate ensembles afford the opportunity for likeminded musicians to share and grow their skills, as well as to bring their beautiful music out to a variety of community stages. Since 1995, The Kingsway Conservatory of Music has delivered a vibrant and in-

spirational setting in which to explore the language of music. Spacious, bright and elegant studios are alive with the sounds of music including private lessons on almost every instrument, Music for Baby classes, Early Childhood Musicianship programs and a plethora of ensembles for every age and stage. Registration is ongoing, and inquiries are welcome at any time. Please call 416-234-0121 or visit www.KingswayConservatory.ca for more information on programs. The musical doors are always open at The Kingsway Conservatory!

Frame It On Bloor 1610 Bloor St. W. 416-588-4226 www.frameitonbloor.com When it comes to framing your favorite photo or art piece the sheer number of options can be overwhelming. To help lay the course for your next framing mission, consider the three P’s: Plan, Placement and Proportion. These tips will help you make the right design choices that compliment your style and your wallet.Having a Plan is by far the most important tool when making framing choices. You don’t have to know exactly what you want, but the more details you can share with your framer the easier it is for them to design your project. Bring in photos or samples that reflect the environment where it will hang or objects that inspire your personal style! The second step is to consider Placement. Where is this piece going to hang? Will it be the focal point of the room? Will it be fitting into a tight space or a narrow hallway? Will it be added to an existing group of photos, or maybe part of a future grouping? These are all important questions to ask, as the answers will dictate how the project will be designed. There are framing options for every scenario and through a framing consultation we as framers can ensure there is function as well as form in your finished piece. Lastly, don’t be afraid of experimenting with Proportion! It can be a secret weapon for giving smaller pieces more impact and creating an unexpected twist in traditional framing practice. Make small photos look impressive with a large mat! Instead of tackling an oversized painting, try hanging smaller pieces in pairs or groupings; it can be more cost effective and deliver more punch. You don’t have to buy big art to make a big statement! Ultimately, have fun with your new project! Don’t limit yourself to the norm and remember: Great things come from great ideas! Let us help you design your next masterpiece.
