While Windermere United Church was providing asylum for a refugee family recently, Rev. Alexa Gilmour said she soon discovered that arranging for basic necessities is only part of the equation. “It takes more than a grocery card to feed the soul,” Gilmour said. “When you can’t provide for your children when everyone else in the neighbourhood can, it eats away at your selfesteem.” That’s one of the reasons why Gilmour went the extra mile for the family of four in the church’s care. She approached a Bloor West Village hair salon about providing haircuts. Coincidentally, the hairstylist who came to the church to do the haircuts had mused to her boyfriend the evening before. ‘I really want to do something good in this world, but all I know how to do is cut hair,’ she told Gilmour. Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System

What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the

Woman charged in house fire that injured a firefighter on Dufferin Street this month Andrew PAlAmArchuk apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com A woman faces charges in an Oct. 11 rooming house blaze that seriously injured a Toronto firefighter. The three-alarm fire broke out just after 9 a.m. at a house on Dufferin Street at Alma Avenue, north of Queen Street. Police describe the building as an “unlicensed rooming house.” Interim Fire Chief Matthew Pegg told reporters on the day of the fire that a firefighter from the “first Claudio Cugliari/photo

Roberta Overholt (left) leads a line of children to school Tuesday morning in Brampton.

Keep kids safe on the streets by making them aware and visible dominik kurek dkurek@thetopic.ca For Roberta Overholt, a mother of three who helps countless children get to school everyday, walking is just a normal occurrence. She helps run the Walking School Bus at Brampton’s Morton Way Public School, which sees more than 100 participants. “It’s a program to promote children actually walking to school instead of having their parents drive them,” she said. While this has physical and environmental benefits, it also helps keep the children safe. “They know that they have to watch their surroundings. They know who to look for when we’re out walking,” Overholt said. Plus, walking in a group is safer than walking alone. Keeping a child safe is on every parent’s mind, particularly after a near miss caught on video earlier this school year went viral. A 10-year-old girl in Pickering almost got hit crossing in front of

a school bus when a car zoomed past. This was in broad daylight. With Halloween approaching and with shorter daylight hours, motorists need to watch for children who might be harder to spot in darkness. While driving according to the weather and daylight conditions and following the rules of the road will help minimize the risk of collision, police are reminding pedestrians that they too must ensure their own safety. Be visible and pay attention, said Peel Regional Police Constable Mark Fischer. “Wear reflective clothing, reflective bands, footwear, jackets, anything is helpful,” he said. “Put your cell phone away. Just like distracted driving, there’s distracted walking that can cause injuries.” When it’s raining, use an umbrella. “Then you can keep your eyes up and you don’t need to be looking down,” Fischer said. Children should walk in groups.

Walking in a group makes you more visible to drivers, but also makes you less likely to be approached by a dangerous stranger, Fischer said. Children should avoid crossing in between intersections, and should stick to crosswalks, or lighted intersections to cross the road. Toronto-based Parachute, a national charity dedicated to safety awareness and education, tells parents that educating children about road safety starts with them. “Parents knowing the rules of the road and being a really good role model is important,” Parachute interim CEO Pam Fuselli said. “I think parents underestimate how much of an impact their own behaviours have on their own children. So make sure that you do cross the road at the stop sign or the crosswalk or on a green light, versus running across the road midblock.” Children should be taught the various rules of the road at the appropriate stages of their development.

responding crew was overcome by a high level of heat while conducting search and rescue operations.” The firefighter was pulled from the burning building unconscious but regained consciousness a short time later and was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital where he was listed in serious but non-lifethreatening condition. He was released from hospital earlier this week and continues to recover from burn-related injuries at home. “There’s some factors here that contributed to the spread and development of the fire that is unique to this investigation,” Toronto Fire division chief Larry Cocco said in an interview Wednesday. Another person was taken to hospital with minor smoke inhalation. Toronto Fire district chief Stephan Powell said at the time that there was “heavy smoke and flame” and that people were “climbing out windows when we arrived.” Police allege a post-fire inspection and investigation by the fire marshal’s office and Toronto Fire Services revealed numerous violations of the Ontario Fire Code. “We have a history with this property owner,” Cocco alleged. “The property owner was convicted under the fire code on Aug. 14, 2015.” Police allege further investigation is ongoing by Municipal Licensing and Standards and Toronto Fire Services. The fire was brought under control within an hour; 19 fire trucks were dispatched to the scene. Celia Gilda Gomez, 72, of Toronto was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 25 and is charged with two counts of arson by negligence and one count each of criminal negligence causing bodily harm, mischief endangering life and mischief under $5,000. She is scheduled to appear in court on the morning of Nov. 29.

n a few days our streets will be full of miniature ghouls, princesses and witches, excitedly going door-to-door to fill up their treat bags. At this time of year, however, it’s not just on Halloween that drivers and pedestrians need to be cautious of each other. The days are shorter and it’s usually under the cover of darkness that people busy themselves getting to and from work, or kids make their way to school. Last week Toronto police reported 18 pedestrians were hit on the road in one day – with one of those incidents resulting in a fatality. We’ve all seen that video from Pickering where the girl getting off a bus is nearly OuR ViEW little hit by a careless driver zooming past. Distracted The close call was enough to walking can make staff gasp in the newsroom. The reality is, for our streets to cause injuries be safer, both drivers and pedestrians need to change their ways. Drivers cannot be distracted. Put your cellphones away, don’t drive while juggling a burger, pay attention to what’s happening in front of and around your car. Watch crosswalks and check blind spots – particularly curbside – for approaching pedestrians or cyclists. For those on the sidewalks, attention needs to be on your surroundings too. As Peel Regional Police Const. Mark Fischer told us this week, “Just like distracted driving, there’s distracted walking that can cause injuries.” Make eye contact with drivers as you approach crosswalks. If it’s raining, use an umbrella so you can monitor the traffic around you. Adult and children pedestrians also need to be mindful of their appearance. Dark clothing limits visibility; choose reflective gear instead. Parents should talk with their kids about street safety and wearing the right clothing in darker hours. If children can walk with a parent, a friend, or in a group – all the better. Some neighbourhoods organize ‘walking school buses’ that pick children up at their front doors. It’s on all of us to change our behaviours and make the effort to keep pedestrians safe.

Do voters need a rest from byelections? What with the tenor of the presidential election nearing its close south of the border, maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that the good voters of northeast Scarborough are tired of being voters and would like a rest. Still, it was hard not to be a bit surprised when at the last council meeting Councillor Chin Lee suggested that some 900 residents of Ward 42 (Scarborough-Rouge River) were interested in abandoning their franchise until the next municipal election and seeing the seat vacated by longtime councillor Raymond Cho filled by council appointment. Lee said he had a petition of that size, asking for an end to what they called “musical chairs” between the various elected offices in Ward 42. There have been a lot of byelections there. Cho departed for Queen’s Park in the last one, this past summer. School trustee Neethan

david nickle the city Shan, a New Democrat, was recently elected to the Toronto District School Board in a January byelection, and ran against Cho in the summer. Perhaps, the petitioners worried, the enthusiastic legislator Shan (identified in everything but name in the petition) would do so again. And so with the support of Mayor John Tory, his executive committee members and really everyone else but the left-wing minority, council is waiting a month so that Lee (whose ward borders Ward 42) might consult further with the community. Sympathy for weary Scarborough electors aside, one can’t ignore the possibility that the majority wing of city council wants more of a say in the representation of Ward 42 (and one vote in 45) than a quick byelec-

tion – you know, the sort of thing that people expect in a democracy, two years out from a general election – might otherwise allow. There’s going to be more of this as time goes on. On Wednesday, Mayor Tory’s executive committee had a look at the final report from consultants charged with recommending changes to Toronto’s ward boundaries for the next election. The meeting occurred after the deadline for this column, but the matter must still move to council next month and when it does, I predict a vigorous if occasionally arcane fight over the recommendation to add three new wards bringing the total to 47. Now, the discussion as to whether the number of politicians should be increased is a bit more nuanced: democratic representation can be balanced with 47 councillors, the current 44 or even the 22-member council that the late Rob Ford advocated. And

councillors do cost money. These ones would cost a total of $870,000 a year, with another $210,000 to set up the three city hall and constituency offices in the first year. Aside from the money, there is also the matter of all that debate. Those old enough to get tired of voting are also old enough to remember when Toronto Council had 57 members, just after amalgamation, and how exhausting that bunch was. Of course, the real answer is that whether we want to or not, the right to vote in an election and have one’s views and interests represented in government is important in itself – and as well as being a right, a responsibility. One might think that everyone should understand that.

Extraordinary Women series at the Revue The latest installment of the Revue Cinema’s Extraordinary Women series presents filmmaker Michael Ostroff, who will introduce Winds of Heaven, his documentary about Emily Carr, on Sunday, Oct. 30, at 4 p.m. The film, presented by the local, not-for-profit Back Lane Studios, in partnership with the Revue, is an exploration of Carr’s life

and work in their artistic and historical context. It has been described as ‘one of the best films ever made about (British Columbia), these forests, and our history as newcomers.’ It presents vivid images and descriptions of what happened to First Nations communities, including some in the region traversed by the Highway of Tears, where so many aborig-

inal women disappeared or were murdered. Ostroff and art historian Gerta Moray will take part in a post-screening discussion and Q&A. For Ostroff, the relationship and tensions between Carr and the First Nations communities were key to the structure and focus he brought to the documentary. There are artistic influ-

ences and connections, as well, which Moray will comment on. Lawren Harris, w h o s e p a i n t i n g s w e re recently exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario, was a friend of and influence on Carr. Moray will also discuss the parallels between Carr and Georgia O’Keeffe, who will be featured at an AGO exhibit next spring. The screening and discus-

sion takes place at the Revue, 400 Roncesvalles Ave., from 4 to 6 p.m. Advance tickets are $13, and $10 for seniors and Revue members. They’re $14 and $11 at the door. Proceeds from the event will support documentary filmmaking programs for students and seniors. For further details, visit http:// bit.ly/2eABlxN and www. backlanestudios.ca

Businesses, groups wanted to donate services >>>from page 1 officially launched the Stone Soup Network. The initiative is named for the old folk story, ‘Stone Soup,’ in which (one of many versions) two travelling monks in the Himalayan mountains stumble upon a village whose inhabitants have stowed away all their food. ‘Doesn’t matter,’ an elder assures the monks, pulling out a large pot, filling it with water and adding stones before cooking it over a

fire, ‘we have everything we need to make stone soup.’ ‘I do like a tasty stone soup,’ he proclaims loudly to himself, ‘but a stone soup with cabbage is hard to beat.’ That’s when a villager appears with a cabbage and adds it to the pot. ‘If only we had some carrots,’ the elder said, to which another villager responded by adding a few. More and more villagers follow

their neighbours’ lead until there is a large enough meal for everyone to partake in and a community is forged. We’ve lost some of that sense of community in our current technological world, said Doug Tindel, a Windermere Church congregant and chair of the Stone Soup Network Advisory Committee, at a launch event at the church, Oct. 18. The network is in the midst of creating a database of businesses and organizations that are willing

to provide such services as a meal, a job interview, an hour or so of tutoring. Then, it will approach its “trusted connectors” like clergy and social workers – people who work in the community who know where there is a need – before matching the services with those who need them the most. These kinds of good deeds are nothing new for Gilmour and her congregation. Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette, who vol-

unteered for her children’s schools before entering politics, said she and parent council members met families who needed help and would approach the minister for help whether it was for a backpack full of school supplies or a meal. “Every time Alexa would come through,” Doucette said at last week’s launch. get together.

When you throw food scraps in your Blue Bin, food residue and particles get soaked up by paper and can ruin large batches of otherwise good recyclables. In fact, last year an estimated 45,000 tonnes of organic waste and garbage was mistakenly put into recycling. Meaning a lot of ruined recyclables ended up in the City’s landfill. And that is a very bad thing indeed. Learn what goes in your Blue Bin and what doesn’t at toronto.ca/recycleright

her neighbour. As a writer for the Sportsnet magazine, and specifically for its Q&A feature, Rutherford is able to ask athletes about all aspects of their lives – including such topics as pets, and vacations – in addition to their athletic careers. Rutherford is a life-long Bloor West Village resident. At six years of age and envious of her brother who got to play hockey, Rutherford said, “apparently, I cried until my parents signed me up.” Rutherford knew she wanted a career in sports in some capacity. Initially, she thought it’d be through kinesiology, but it was partly her dad’s influence that led her to journalism. Her first reporting job at the Oakville Beaver saw her covering arts and entertainment - and whenever possible, sports. She’s been at Sportsnet for five years and says she loves talking to people and seeing the emotions expressed on athletes’ faces on the ice or the court. “Sports are the original reality TV,” she quipped. As for Szmidt, because of the lack of women in boxing, she says it’s tricky to find female sparring

partners so instead she has to train with the guys at the Toronto Boxing Academy on St. Clair Avenue West, just east of Runnymede Road. But, in her experience, that’s a good thing. “They’re so supportive. They respect it,” said Szmidt, who fought her first professional fight in New Brunswick on Oct. 15. Although Szmidt dominated for the first three rounds, the fight was called a ‘no contest’ because of an accidental head butt. Undefeated as an amateur

fighter and one professional fight under her belt, Szmidt aspires to become a Canadian champion before heading to Las Vegas – the boxing capital of the world. The 23-year old says she’d like to be a role model for women. A natural born athlete, Szmidt first aspired to compete in wrestling at the Olympics, but she was always too heavy for her weight category. Instead, she switched to rugby. In January 2014 when she began boxing, Szmidt said she discovered just how rewarding the sport is. “It keeps my body in shape more than any other sport,” she said. “It keeps you fit, motivated and happy. It’s a confidence booster.” Szmidt, who lives in Pickering and works downtown as a security director, said she began participating in fitness classes, like boxing boot camp, when six months in, her coach Brock Arthur, owner of the Toronto and Durham boxing academies, pulled her aside to ask if she wanted to compete. “A lot of women, when they see me spar with guys, it makes them feel more comfortable. It helps build their confidence to try new things,” Szmidt said.
