High Park Gates survive a century Sponsors and participants sought for 100th birthday celebration

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com On a brisk and windy winter afternoon in March almost a century ago, a motorcade pulled up to the memorial gateway

Recreation programs could be free across the city before too long, if council goes along with the community development and recreation committee’s recommendation to scrap fees introduced shortly after amalgamation. The committee recommended this week that the city find $30.6 million in new tax revenue to cover the cost of the programs currently paid for by user fees. “Recreation services should be universally accessible regardless of location, class, gender or the neighbourhood you reside in,” said Toronto CentreRosedale Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, who moved the motion. “I would like to ask this committee to consider that our task is to ensure the health and vitality of our residents. We are here to create conditions for residents of Toronto to thrive.” The motion would see the entire $40 million budget for recreation programs absorbed through property taxes. Currently, the city subsidizes programs to the tune of just $10 million for the Welcome Policy. Only St. Paul’s Councillor Josh Matlow opposed the motion – and he did so because he said the city needed to be able to impose fees where they deemed appropriate. – David Nickle

The three simply wanted to make each other laugh. “We’ve always had this funny bent to our lives,” said the Roncesvalles Village resident. Quinn and his brother were known for creating comedic versions of existing board games and sports. And so, while on one of their many visits back home to North Bay where Sherry still lives, the trio came up with what is now known as The Game of Things. Yet back then, it was referred to as just ‘The Game’

and became more popular than any other traditional board game among family and friends. “I just thought it was a really fun pastime. We’d be rolling on the ground laughing and waking up the next day with a sore belly. It took on a life of its own for five years,” Quinn told The Villager. It was Sherry, the entrepreneur, who operated several businesses in North Bay, who first suggested pitching their idea to a distributor. “He said, ‘If you don’t go and do this, I’ll do it without you,’” Quinn said with a laugh. The three decided to rent a booth at the Canadian Toy Fair where they set up a living room with a wooden box that mirrored the game as a backdrop. “We were smart, savvy, middleaged guys, but we didn’t understand the business at the time,” said Quinn. As many as 17 distributors were interested at the end of the fair. Once

My kids and nephews and nieces didn’t pay any attention to it until it got in a box,” Quinn said. “One New Year’s Eve, the kids, between the ages of six and 16, were in the basement. I explained the rules and I let them pick a topic: Things you shouldn’t do when you’re naked. My 10-year old nephew came up with ‘Fry bacon.’ If you can read and write, you can play.” When Quinn is not inventing games, he can be found behind the lens as a film director. mysterious apparition in North York. A spooky voice in Casa Loma. A figure in the window of Colborne Lodge. Toronto is full of compelling tales of the otherworldly. In today’s Halloween edition of The Bloor West Villager you’ll find spooky lore with a local flavour on page 34, along with a list of the stories we’ve worked on in all nine of our newspapers across the city. You can access all of the stories online at bit. ly/192hP6w We encourage you to check them out. Toronto’s tales are fascinating, whether they involve the unexplained chill felt by some visitors to Montgomery’s Inn or the clip-clop of horse said to have been heard at our view hooves historic Fort York. But in addition to offering a Haunted tales spine-tingling shudder, these form an important part of create link to stories our city’s history. These are stories that have survived, grown and city’s past evolved, but at their genesis are about real people in real places. As Ewan Wardle of the Fort York National Historic Site observed during a site tour called Fort York After Dark: “These are real human beings who lived and loved and died on the grounds that we are walking.” We wrote in this space in August about why local history matters. Its importance is not just about remembering or preserving the past. We believe if we know more about our local communities and the people and events that shaped them, we establish closer connections to them. If we make those connections, we’ll have a greater understanding of what we want our communities to be. So what can one do? Consider the resources at your disposal. When it comes to knowing more about our history, your local library branch and the City of Toronto Archives are great places to start your search. Did you know you can research your residence at the Archives? If you have more time to commit, perhaps reach out to local resident groups or a historical society to get involved. We spend a significant amount of time in the communities we live in. Why shouldn’t we find out more about them and want to help them grow?

Stintz aims for centre-right vote K aren Stintz’s early arrival in the 2014 mayor’s race can’t be a surprise to anyone. The councillor from EglintonLawrence has been notso-quietly organizing a campaign for months, and not-quietly-at-all taking control of the kind of major policy matters — specifically, transportation — you’d expect the current mayor to do. She might have continued that course for a few more months. But with popular conservative talk show host and former Progressive Conservative leader John Tory mulling a run, Stintz had to up her game early and decisively — if for no other purpose than securing some fundraising real estate before the rush in early 2014. In this, declaring early is a good strategy. However, an early declaration for a candidate also invites early assessments, and so it is with Stintz. Out of the gate, Stintz is

david nickle the city

attempting to paint herself as a fiscal conservative similar to Mayor Rob Ford in that respect, but... well, completely opposite in everything else. Well and good, but political branding is only partly self-portraiture, and Stintz will have to deal with matters beyond her control. Stintz owes a large part of her public profile to the work she’s done on the public transit file as chair of the Toronto Transit Commission. In the latter part of the term, she’s worked to improve customer service, and she’s been a central figure in the subway-LRT debate. There are problems, though. On the latter point, Stintz has been all over the map — starting the term out supporting light rail over subways and helping

to halt Mayor Ford’s plan to replace the Sheppard light rail line with an unfunded subway. Shortly after that, she came forward with her One City transit plan — tenuously funded, with a politically unpalatable property tax premium — that included a different Scarborough subway. Council balked, and Stintz left the chamber with egg on her face. Finally, Stintz delivered a subway to Scarborough — funding of which is also tenuous, with federal money tied to a Sheppardstyle public-private partnership arrangement and a boatload of new debt. For all her journeyman work, Mayor Ford wasted little time in taking credit. On the customer service question... well, Stintz also helped Mayor Ford deliver his first flatline budget by agreeing to service standard rollbacks on the TTC. In that way, one might argue that Stintz created

the very problem that she’s now working to solve. With all that, she still remains a formidable challenger to Mayor Ford, in the fight for the essential centre-right vote. On Monday, the mayor conceded the election would be “a bloodbath,” because his opponents would no doubt go after him on matters of character, associations, truancy and other “personal matters.” The mayor is no doubt correct on this count. His behaviour and comportment have assured all those things will be central questions in his re-election bid. And Stintz, while certainly haunted by controversies and mis-steps of her own, has shown herself to be an active and at-times effective leader on council. In these early days of next year’s fight, that isn’t a bad start.

THANK YOU

1,000 PEOPLE WITH SPOOKTACULAR SPIRIT RAISED $150,000 FOR CHILDREN’S CARE AT ST. JOE’S

A big thank you to the more than 1,000 of our friends and neighbours who came out for the Second Annual Toronto West Halloween Fest. Presented by Scotiabank, the event raised $150,000 to help the 35,000 children who come to St. Joseph’s Health Centre each year for care. A spirited Parade and an in-costume Fun Run took over Bloor Street West, followed by a lively Halloween Party. “The turnout was incredible,” said Maria Dyck, Foundation President. “Seeing so many people out to support St. Joe’s demonstrates how strongly the community values having great care for our kids close to home. We’re deeply touched by this support and would like to thank all of our sponsors and everyone who came out!”

Anniversary to include the recreation of 1914 ceremony >>>from page 1 national executive of the Order of the Daughters of the Empire (IODE). A troop of boy scouts acted as guard of honour to the duke. The Highlanders’ Band played the national anthem. The ceremony that took place Sunday, March 19, 1914 at 4 p.m. commemorated the completion of the newly constructed wrought iron gates, dedicated to the late John George Howard, founder of High Park, which he bequeathed to the city. Several community groups, including the Grenadier Group, High Park Nature Centre, Runnymede and High Park libraries, the Swansea and Roncesvalles Village historical societies, the Children’s Garden, highpark.org and the Friends of High Park Zoo, have banded together to organize an anniversary event in honor of the historic gates. “We’re going to recreate as much of the 1914 ceremony as possible,” said Colborne Lodge museum co-ordinator Cheryl Hart. The groups are working in conjunction with ParkdaleHigh Park Councillor Sarah Doucette, who said the milestone anniversary was discovered by the city’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation department and flagged it. “If anyone would like to sponsor this, we’re going to make this a spectacular old English celebration,” said Doucette adding there will likely be cucumber sandwiches and old English tea. “There will be banners and

flags – a lot of pomp and circumstance.” The project will be funded in part by Heritage Canada’s Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage grant program. “We put a call out to the community to see who wanted to get involved,” Hart said. “We’re commemorating the anniversary, but celebrating High Park as well.” Festivities will be held on Sunday, March 23 next year. “We just want to let people know it’s happening, if there’s anyone who would like to take part,” Hart said. The event will include a parade that will likely begin near the zoo and end at the gates. The 48th Highlander Pipe Band will play.

The March 23 event will be “a loose recreation” celebrating the community, history and nature, Hart said. A tent will likely be erected near the Jamie Bell Adventure Playground. Howard, said Hart, would be proud of what High Park is today. “He wrote letters to various newspapers about how he wanted it to be for everyone. He helped those who were struggling financially. He wanted to be seen as an example to other people to be philanthropic,” she said. “I think he would have loved the gates.”

All dressed up and somewhere to go

S

o, have you got your Halloween costume picked out yet? Not to worry. If you still haven’t figured out what you’re going to get dressed up as, I canvassed kids all over the city to see what they’d be wearing. Here are just a few of the responses. Maybe one of their getups will inspire you. Lailani, age 9, Etobicoke Lailani: “I’m gonna be a witch.” Will you be trick-ortreating as a good witch or a bad witch? Lailani: “That all depends. If the house is in the Halloween spirit, I’ll be as good as can be. But if there isn’t even a pumpkin out front, I’ll make the bad witch in the Wizard of Oz seem like Mary Poppins.” Mario, 7, North York Mario: “I plan on being be a really big bat.” Which one? Mario: “Either Jose Bautista or Edwin Encarnacion.”

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY Deepti, 5, Etobicoke Deepti: “I’m gonna be a goblin.” So how do you plan to spend your evening, cutie? Deepti: “How else? A goblin candy, a goblin chocolates, a goblin cookies, Rice Krispies squares, you name it. Basically, I’ll be a goblin anything I can get my little hands on.” Chantal, 6, Parkdale Chantal: “I’m going as my idol, Justin.” The Biebs? Chantal: “Give me a break. He’s so 2012. I was referring to the Trudes, the next PM.” Shannon, 8, the Beach Shannon: “I’m gonna be Wonder Woman.” What are your special powers, Wonder Woman? Shannon: “I’m raising six children, I have a full-time job, I’m general manager of my kids’ local gymnastics club and I can do a mara-

thon in less than threeand-a-half hours.” Mitchell, 22, York University student, York Mitchell: Well, I usually go as a vampire, or a zombie, or a werewolf, you know somebody that really gives you the creeps. But this year I’ve got my most terrifying outfit yet, one that would even send chills up and down Frankenstein’s spine. Wow. I wasn’t aware monsters had spines. I must have missed that lecture in university. Anyhow, you’ve got my attention. So, don’t keep me in suspense. What are you going to be? Mitchell: “The NHL standings.” What the heck is so scary about the NHL standings? Mitchell: “The Leafs are in first place.” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. Veterans and schoolchildren came together to honour Canada’s war dead during the kick-off event for the annual poppy drive. The Royal Canadian Legion’s 2013 Poppy Campaign runs until Remembrance Day during which time across the country approximately 18 million poppies and 70,000 memorial wreaths are expected be sold by war veterans and volunteers for the legion, said Toronto Legion Commander Jay Burford to an audience that included Grade 6 students from Davisville Public School. Some $8 million is raised through the campaign yearly with proceeds going to veterans. One of those veterans, Fred Newton who enlisted with the Canadian military when he was just 18 and fought in northern Europe during the Second World War, was among those attending last Friday’s campaign launch. Wrapped in a blanket, Newton, who is now a resident of the veterans’ wing at Sunnybrook hospital, beamed as he helped pin

poppies on to the lapels of the students, but grew emotional as he recalled fallen comrades. “I lost so many friends, so many friends,” said Newton as he wiped away tears. Throughout the twoweek campaign, poppies will be available for sale at all TTC stations, said TTC chair Karen Stintz. “When we see the poppy we think of those who fought and served to guard our freedoms,” said Stintz. “I encourage all TTC riders to wear a poppy.” She said all TTC vehicles will stop for two minutes at 11 a.m. on Remembrance Day, Monday, Nov. 11. Stintz also said current and former members of the Canadian Forces will get to ride the TTC for free all day on Nov. 11. Lou Cronsilver said he hoped younger generations never forget the sacrifices more than 100,000 Canadians who lost their lives while in military service. “I want them to know everything that happened, and God forbid it ever happens again,” Cronsilver said.

Don’t let your rental income go up in smoke

Scott McGillivray offers tips on how to keep your property fire free

One of the most important responsibilities of being a landlord is to make sure your rental unit is safe and meets all building codes. Fire safety and prevention are paramount and that goes for a rental unit inside your home.

4 1 6

To make sure my rental tenants’ safety comes first, I follow the Ontario Fire Code regulations. Changes to provincial legislation enacted in July 1994 made apartments permissible in most detached houses, semi-detached houses and row houses, as long as

minimum health and safety requirements are met. Owners of houses containing two self-contained residential units (dwelling units) are required to bring their buildings into compliance with the new fire safety regulation adopted under the Ontario Fire Code. Tenants in these buildings are entitled to ask their landlords to make sure that the fire regulations are met. The Code addresses four safety issues including: Fire separation for each dwelling unit. This can be done with a specifically engineered product, such as Roxul ComfortBoard FS. It is a semi-rigid, stone wool insulation board and is ideal for fire-stopping in concealed spaces of multi-unit residential buildings. Means of escape from each dwelling unit. Basement apartments must have a separate exit or have windows large enough for a human to escape to be consider a legal rental unit. Smoke alarms are a must for any home, whether a rental unit or not and need to be installed, one on each level and close to bedrooms. Electrical safety is of utmost importance. All electrical should be updated and brought up to code if creating a dwelling unit within a home.

Scott McGillivray is a full-time real estate investor, contractor, television host, writer, and educator.

Fire safety, especially in a rental unit, needs to be put on the top of priorities. Although a rental unit can be a profitable investment, it also comes with the responsibility of your tenant’s safety. Always put their safety first and you’ll have good tenants for a long time.

LAUGHS ALL AROUND a century of storytelling: Soli, of Soli and Rob, hands out shakers to the crowd of kids who came to celebrate The Bloor/Gladstone library branch's 100th anniversary last Wednesday. Kids crowded the library and filled the air with their laughter during the show. The day of events at the library included: local celebrity authors, community historical walking tours, festivities for kids and teens, and an all-day birthday party exactly 100 years to the day the library originally opened. The branch was the first to open in the city funded solely by public money. Staff photos/MARY GAUDET

Notes from 11 Division’s CPLC Open house to discuss development The Community Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) for 11 Division holds monthly meetings, which are attended by residents, representatives from resident associations, business improvement areas and officers of all ranks from 11 Division. The Committee usually meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month and about half of those meetings are held at the 11 Division Headquarters and the other half are hosted at venues in the community. “We try to encourage people to come and hear their neighbours’ concerns and express their own,” said Superintendent Peter Lennox, the Unit Commander of 11 Division. The last meeting of the 11 Division CPLC was held on Oct. 22 at Swansea Mews, at the corner of Windermere Avenue and the Queensway. Here are some highlights from the meeting. w SCHOLARSHIP CONCERT A recent concert of classical music, held in support of the 11 Division CPLC Scholarship

fund, raised nearly $500. Held on Sunday, Oct. 20, the concert featured violinist Susan Spier, a member of the CPLC, and pianist Catherine Maguire. “It was not only a wonderful concert, but also a wonderful community event,” Lennox said. Money raised went to the community safety scholarship, which is awarded through the Scadding Court Community Centre Scholarship Program. w CLOTHING DRIVE The 11 Division CPLC, which hosts a Hats, Mitts and Clothing Drive each winter, will kick off its 5th annual drive in the upcoming weeks. The CPLC collects items, which are distributed to people who need them through various local social service agencies. Last year the drive netted 2,800 items. The clothing drive will kick off on Nov. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. at 11 Division. w CRIME STATISTICS Const. Robert Tajti, crime analyst for Toronto Police

11 Division, gave the community a summary of year to date crime statistics for the division. Robberies are down 5.5 per cent. Nearly 80 per cent are youth on youth robberies of items including cell phones, Tajti said. Residential break and enters are up 19.5 per cent, but Tajti explained it is due to an entry series around the Baby Point area during the summer, but 22 Division has made an arrest that has ended the series. Commercial break and enters are down 30.5 per cent, due in part to an arrest made on the east end of the division, Tajti said. Thefts of vehicles are down 27.7 per cent. Thefts from vehicles have been an issue in 11 Division in the past, but Tajti explained they are down 42.1 per cent over a reduction of 22 per cent in 2012. Translated, that means at this time in 2011, 11 Division had received approximately 800 reports of theft from vehicle verses approximately 300 reports in the same period in 2013.

The City of Toronto is hosting a community open house to discuss the proposed Grenadier Square development at 51-77 Quebec Ave., Nov. 7 at Western Technical Commercial School from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The developer is proposing two 31-storey apartment buildings on the lands. A working group comprised of local residents and the applicant was established

to identify possible solutions to the community’s initial concerns. Since then, five meetings were held to discuss height, density, massing, building type, setbacks, separation distances, wind and shadow impacts, light, view and privacy, among other issues. As a result of the working group process, the developer modified the proposal to take into account these concerns.

A revised proposal that reduces the height from 31 to 26 stories and units from 610 to 534 was recently presented to the working group. The open house allows the greater community to view the revised proposal. Comment sheets will be available. For further details, contact Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette at 416-3924072 or at council

Autumn is no time for falls Toronto Central CCAC provides seniors with falls prevention tips Trips and falls can happen to anyone, but they happen more often and have more serious effects on older adults. Each year, about one third of Canadian seniors has a fall. Falls can result in serious injuries, including broken bones. This, in turn, can lead to hospitalization, a loss of independence and in some cases, may even lead to death. These effects on individuals can be devastating, but there are also serious effects to our healthcare system: each year about $1 billion is spent caring for seniors who have fallen. But falls are NOT an unavoidable part of aging. Older adults can take control of their lives, and work with their family doctor and other healthcare professionals to avoid most falls. Dizziness is one common reason for falls. One cause can be medications. Changing the type, dose or timing of a medication can make a big difference – but only with the agreement of one’s pharma-

cist or family doctor. Another cause of dizziness can be low blood sugar – making sure to eat healthy meals and snacks throughout the day is important. Low blood pressure can also be a cause. This may be related to medication, but it can also be caused by dehydration. Making sure to drink water throughout the day can be a simple way to improve low blood pressure. Poor balance can often be improved with gentle exercises or assistive devices like walkers or canes. Installing – and using – hand rails on steps and in bathrooms can

also be a big help. Avoiding trips and slips can mean keeping pathways clear inside and outside the home. Remove small rugs and ensure outside steps and walks are shovelled and salted in the winter. Having good lighting is important, including night lights. Toronto Central CCAC (Community Care Access Centre) assists people to stay at home longer and safely. The CCAC can provide an occupational therapist or physiotherapist to help with these and other falls prevention steps.

Fall prevention tips for seniors: • Wear your glasses and hearing aids • Get rid of clutter on your floors and stairs • Wear proper footwear that provides good support. Don’t wear loose slippers or socks • Focus on one task at a time • Be careful when getting up

Willemien Stanger Manager, Client Services

from a chair or bed • Stay physically active. Speak to your doctor before beginning an exercise program • Have regular check-ups with your doctor, and regular eye and hearing exams. • Pets like to stay close – be careful not to trip over your pet dog or cat.

Is High Park’s first lady haunting her home? Jemima Howard suffered and died in the same room visitors now come to tour LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com In 1969, a police officer was patrolling High Park when a figure appeared in one of the second-floor bedroom windows of Colborne Lodge, home of John and Jemima Howard, the original owners of Toronto’s famed park. Entering the house, the officer crept up the stairs and into the room only to find it empty. “When he came to check it out, there was no one there,” said museum co-ordinator Cheryl Hart. In the documented case, the officer is said to have seen the ghostly figure of Jemima Howard, who died after a lengthy breast cancer battle in 1877, the first woman in Toronto to be diagnosed with the disease, Hart said. “The story takes on a Jane Eyreesque feel because Jemima died in that room,” Hart told The Villager at the lodge on a mid-October morning. “She had a good view of the tomb that John built for the couple.” John Howard brought in a number of doctors and nurses to care for his ailing wife. She had a lesion on her breast that ruptured. Howard sketched it and sent the drawing to a pathologist in England, who then diagnosed the woman. “In his diaries, you can see the indication that things aren’t quite right (with Jemima),” Hart said. “He says she spilled her milk and broke her glass on one of his paintings. He notes she’d run away on two different occasions. He had a difficult time finding her.” Howard tried to have his wife committed to the “best” ward of the Provincial Lunatic Asylum, which he designed, at 999 Queen Street W., where CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health) now stands. “The doctor said, ‘Not now,’” Hart said. So, for her own safety, he decided to lock her in her bedroom and hired two live-in nurses to care for her. She was prescribed heavy, morphinebased medication. “I’m sure they altered her consciousness,” Hart said. It’s not unusual for visitors to the home to feel a prickly sensation on the back of their necks. “People come in and say they’ve felt something or seen something in the corner of their eye,” the museum co-ordinator said. “It’s my understanding that hauntings are

“I was holding my son’s hand and felt that feeling of being looked at again. This time, I turned around and in the tall grass behind the house, just a few steps from the carriage house was a man,” he says. “He looked like he was alive, however, the thing that freaked me out was that he... was dressed in a long black coat and had a high white collar. His eyes were black and had no expression. I quickly turned back around and started to pick up the pace. I did not turn around again. I felt if I did he would have been right in front of me.” SPOOKY SWANSEA

often associated with people who have had a difficult life or death or some sort of difficulty in their lives. Unresolved issues – that might be where this all started.” According to a report by the Toronto and Ontario Ghosts and

Hauntings Research Society, a notfor-profit organization dedicated to the study of events considered “ghostly” or within the realm of a “haunting,” a man, his mother and son were visiting Colborne Lodge in 1992 when he says he got “an uneasy feeling” that someone or something was walking with them. “I shrugged it off and continued with the tour,” he says. At the nearby carriage house, he says he felt it again – that someone was looking at them. At the end of the tour, their guide left them walking up towards the main road in High Park.

Sue Demeter-St. Clair, a member of the society and area resident, says Colborne Lodge is just one of several buildings that are said to be haunted. The Swansea fire station is said to have experienced paranormal activity. On its top floor, Toronto Fire Services staff has reported seeing an apparition of a firefighter and a little girl as well as “mild poltergeist activity,” like curtains moving when there isn’t a breeze. In 2003, a Swansea man reported feeling a hand on his head and begin to rub his hair. Yet, “I turned around and no one was there,” he reported. In January of 2004, he was walking down Lavinia Avenue, past the Swansea Town Hall, and felt as if he was being watched. On another occasion, he felt a hand on his back before being pushed. Since a human skull was discovered under the town hall during a construction project in the spring that year, he no longer felt any strange sensations. “We are always looking for stories. Primarily people contact us through email or our reporting form,” Demeter-St. Clair said. “We also look through books, library records, and newspaper and city archives for stories and reports, and will interview staff members of historic sites, etc.” Demeter-St. Clair became interested in collecting ghost stories after she met her husband, Matthew Didier, the founder of the Toronto Ghosts and Hauntings Research Society, on a tour of the former Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospitalturned Humber College Mimico campus. The society’s website (at left) is a venue to collect and share stories that focus on legends, myths, history and folklore.

Questions abound over TTC video A video gone viral of a violent subway encounter has led to questions of how the TTC deals with unruly riders. The short video of the altercation at Davisville station has already attracted thousands of views since it was posted to Facebook late Saturday, Oct. 26. It depicts a seemingly-inebriated man blocking the subway train doors at Davisville before being confronted by an irate patron. No TTC staff are seen in the video intervening, but TTC spokesperson Brad Ross’ advice is to avoid confrontations and instead make use of the passenger assistance alarm to summon help. committee member honoured wTTC

community meetings wCrosstown Metrolinx is holding a pair of public meetings for the Crosstown where it will reveal preliminary station and stop designs for the light rail project, The open houses planned for the beginning of November will focus on the eastern alignment of the Crosstown, from Avenue Road to Bayview Avenue and from Wynford to Laird drives. Laird is where the line will emerge from a tunnel and travel at street level in a dedicated median lane east to Kennedy station. An update is also planned on construction planning for the line’s westward tunnel borer launch shaft to be located east of Brentwood Drive which will provide access for a tunnel borer machine to dig west to Yonge Street. It may have looked a little like a science fair, but the Bristol boards and display panels set up around the cafeteria at St. Joseph’s Health Centre were the hospital’s way of connecting its staff, educating them, increasing collaboration and, ultimately, improving quality of patient care. Oct. 21 to 25 was Interprofessional Education Week at the hospital and last Wednesday the hospital held its sixth annual Skills Fair. As a community teaching hospital, Interprofessional E d u c a t i o n We e k i s a n important celebration for St. Joseph’s and the Skills Fair is a key event of the week, said Elizabeth McLaney, the health centre’s director of interprofessional education and collaboration. “It’s an event focused on creating a culture of collaboration,” McLaney said. “It is both a celebration and a learning opportunity based on the idea of creating great teamwork and role clarity.” The fair brought people from all different professions within the hospital – nurses, physicians, pharmacists, rehab specialists, porters, palliative care workers – together to showcase what they do. ‘connect people’ “The idea being that in a real big and busy and complex environment, like a hospital ... this helps us understand each other’s full role and scopes,” McLaney said. “This is a neat way to connect people.” By f o s t e r i n g m u t u a l understand and teamwork, it ultimately benefits the patients at the hospital and their quality of care, McLaney said. “When we learn together, we work better together,” McLaney said. “Teamwork will really support seamless transitions in healthcare,

better safety and highquality care.” Representatives were on hand with displays to talk about things, such as social work, occupational therapy, empathetic communication, transfers and wound care. McLaney said about 300 staff were expected to make their way through the fair. D r. A n d re w How l e t t manned the empathetic communication booth, where he had a video and literature demonstrating the importance of listening and understanding when talking to children and teens. The idea of empathetic communication, he said, overarches all health care in terms of interacting with patients and their families. “Empathic communication is helpful for all areas i n m e d i c i n e,” How l e t t said. “There are all sorts of patients (who) have this sort of suffering. When we feel like we can’t fix something, we give up. But trying to understand and explore their issue can be quite therapeutic.” experiential learning Experiential learning, which is a powerful tool to help learning stick with the employees, also helps them gain understanding and

respect for what their colleagues do, McLaney said. To that end, staff lined up to try their hand at Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) with a simulated belly and the equipment used in MIS surgery, explained Dayle Allen, an education coordinator at St. Joseph’s. “The overall goal is to exhibit what happens in the OR (operating room) and demonstrate how we work together for a common goal, which is high-quality patient care,” she said. “It gives them a greater level of understanding of what actually happens to their surgical patient.” Dr. Colin Botkin, a fellow in minimally invasive surgery, explained the opportunity to try the MIS equipment helps everyone from nurses who anticipate requirements during a surgery to the staff who prepares the trays of tools before a procedure. “If they understand what our tools are and what our needs are, they can actually facilitate easier, cheaper surgery essentially,” Botkin said. “Little changes make a big difference to how long you are in hospital and how much it costs in the end.”

Italian donation to HRH a gift to all communities: chair LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com Italian generosity took centre stage at North York’s Columbus Centre when the Calabrian Benevolent Association of Ontario contributed towards construction of the new Humber River Hospital. The association’s founding 12 members donated $500,000 to the hospital being built at Hwy. 401 and Keele Street. “The Calabrian Benevolent Association of Ontario, with a distinct Calabrian accent... will take a role in community development initiatives that will benefit the entire community,” chair Ralph Chiodo told guests at the cheque presentation ceremony Wednesday evening. “We can’t always expect that someone else will take care of things. We must do our part when we can.” The association is pleased to donate to the hospital because it is committed to

initiatives that benefit the Italian and broader community, Chiodo said “This hospital serves the community of 850,000 people, which a good portion are of Italian background. We’ve been in this community a long time,” said Chiodo, who served for a decade as foundation chair of the former Humber Memorial Hospital. “We want to help this new hospital, which will be here for generations to come. We’re interested in the entire community, not just the Italian community. All the communities, all the nationalities will benefit from this huge, great future hospital that we’re about to finish building.” In recognition of the gift, the lounge outside of cardiology will be named in the association’s honour. Hospital presiden Dr. Rueben Devlin thanked the predominantly Italian crowd, clearly proud of its cultural roots and also its place within

the broader community. “It takes a village to build a new hospital. Whatever village you’re from, it’s appreciated,” Devlin said. Eddy Battiston, chair of the hospital foundation board of

directors, also praised the association’s generosity. “The CBAO understands the power of investing in communities,” he said. “You honour your cultural roots and mobilize your hard-

won accomplishments by investing in community initiatives that not only enhance the lives of its citizens, but gives flight to their dreams.” The association’s gift will

encourage others to come forward with donations, Battiston said. Community and business donors have contributed more than $50 million toward the $225-million public fundraising goal. The new $1.75-billion Humber River will be North America’s first fully digital hospital. For example, it will feature voice recognition for immediate bedside charting, robotic delivery of non-narcotic medicines and supplies, the ability for patients to control their room lights, order food and video call family and friends from bedside computers, and technology that will result in faster diagnoses. “The purpose of this technology is to put patients first,” Devlin said, adding that the concrete has been poured and the building should be closed in to the ninth or 10th floor by winter.
