City marks 400th anniversary of explorer’s historic journey
ART IN THE PARK
Étienne Brûlé’s trip along the Humber River to be celebrated this month SAM JURIC sjuric@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s rich history will be celebrated this month as the city’s neighbourhoods are set to host events to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Étienne Brûlé’s epic journey along the Humber River. The celebration will take place on Sunday, Sept. 13. Étienne Brûlé was a French explorer who embarked on a voyage of discovery in 1615 and established what is known today as the historical, Carrying Place Trail. Author Glenn Turner fondly remembers first encountering Brûlé and Toronto’s beguiling history when he was just a teenager attending North Albion Collegiate, in Rexdale. “Learning about the history of our community is a way in which we can all connect to the land. Local history allows us to understand why things are the way they are, and, at its best, it can guide our decisions for the future,” Turner said. The Etobicoke-raised historian recently published a book which follows Brûlé’s grand voyage, The Toronto Carrying Place: Rediscovering Toronto’s Most Ancient Trail. After eight years of arduous research and writing, the author was proud to celebrate the book’s release this past May. Often juggling his job as a teaching librarian in Nepean, Ont. and his passion to relay the stories of Canada’s past, Turner was determined to piece together a comprehensive account of the Carrying Place Trail. In the wake of his achievement, Turner is happy to witness a renewed appreciation

for Toronto’s roots. “ The flood of recent books and events relating to Toronto’s early history may well change how we see our city and its place in Canada,” Turner said. Events will be held across the city to remember Étienne Brûlé and Carrying Place Trail on Sept. 13. journey of events Beginning in the community of Kleinberg, hikers hailing from the Toronto area will take part in the Brûlé -Wendats Expedition in celebration of Brûlé’s discovery by embarking on a journey at 9 a.m. The band of hikers, including Turner, will make its first stop south of Steeles Avenue at noon. As the hikers continue their passage along the trail, the community will be invited to Cruickshank Park and Weston Lions Park for a family picnic where they can offer support by meeting the hikers as they arrive between noon and 1 p.m. The hikers will be met by children of the community who will carry individually decorated paddles which were
made at the Paddles Ahoy! event at Weston library. The Weston Historical Society is slated to orally share the story of the 23-yearold explorer and his adventures as well as other local history and lore throughout the event. Barbara Spyropoulos, member of Community Police Liaison Committee of 12 Division was honoured to celebrate Toronto’s multicultural identity by organizing the 12 Division’s celebration of the Carrying Place Trail. “It’s a way of highlighting the fact that we have so many immigrants in our community – Brûlé was nominally the first,” Spyropoulos said. An immigrant herself, Spyropoulos has called Weston home for many years. “We all have a part to play in Canada’s development regardless of our country of origin,” Spyropoulos said. As the hikers commence the last leg of their reenactment of Brûlé’s journey along the Humber River, the community is encouraged to meet them at their final destination; the Swansea 8,000 Years Celebration at Lucy Maud Montgomery
Park, 222 Riverside Dr. An exact time for this event will be announced online at www.swansea8000years. com The community will be transported through time as storytellers, Aqua Rennie, Hildy Stollery, Pat Bisset, and Edith George, relate stories of First Nations history and characters in period costumes from 25 eras who will bring some historical flair to the festivities. “This is a great opportunity to highlight and celebrate the history and culture of our First Nations,” Spyropoulos said. Children will have the chance take part in the historical fun and join in a mock archaeological dig. Information booths at the Riverside Drive festival will include early French cooking with Chantal Vechambre, information sessions with Brûlé historians, and the Ontario Museum Association. L
abour Day is like the middle of the longest car trip you can remember: powering across the prairies, destination a little farther past the horizon than the trip’s beginning. Prime Minister Stephen Harper got us started early – way back in August, packing up the federal election campaign bus in the dark and hauling us from our Sunday morning beds without so much as a bathroom break before hitting the highway. And now here we are: in the midst of the longest federal election this century, that by the polls is anyone’s to win. So far, for those of us paying attention and not distracted by our view the attack ads on the in-car DVD player, what we’ve had to occupy Serious us are strategic and tactical questions. questions The trial of suspended senator to consider Mike Duffy has laid bare some of the inner workings of Harper’s prime minister’s office (PMO), and we’ve puzzled over how the revelations might be used by the New Democrats or Liberals, or somehow minimized by the Conservatives. We’ve watched Liberal leader Justin Trudeau dodge attack ads complimenting his hair, but questioning his readiness, then put in a good early debate performance, and wondered how that might affect the polls. And we’ve tried to figure out what it is Tom Mulcair’s New Democratic Party is doing to edge into the lead in all those polls that keep dropping. Well, it’s Labour Day coming up – not even halfway to the Oct. 19 election day – and it’s safe to say we’ve burned through all the simple driving games. It’s time to start paying attention – and by that we don’t mean watching U.S. Republican leader hopeful Donald Trump on YouTube. Voters in Toronto and across the country are facing some serious questions about the next five years. The three main parties are offering very different visions and plans to navigate this country down what could be some very rough roads. Conservatives, Liberals and New Democrats sharing the driving up front will have strategies for us to consider. Although it may not seem like it here in the back seat, we, the voters, only have choices.

Olympic flame a temptation too great to resist
T
here are some temptations that are too much for a mayor to resist. Promising a tax freeze, or increases so low they may as well be? That’s a tough one. Devising a new transit plan that wasn’t on anybody else’s long-term infrastructure plan? Good luck saying no. But those are all easy when it comes to the tempting, flickering flame of the Olympics. A mayor who says no to that would have to be made of sterner stuff than pretty well all of them. So it is with Mayor John Tory, who appears to be following Oscar Wilde’s advice, which is to say, banishing temptation by yielding to it. After a summer of feigning a wait-and-see attitude, Tory appears to be ready to go all in with a bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics. There is a lot to like, politically at least, in being out-front in a bid for an
david nickle the city Olympic Games. It is, first and foremost, a fundamentally boosterish enterprise: mayors and business leaders and often popular sports figures spend lunch-hours before cameras speaking highly of their city and basking in the glow of it. Infrastructure projects find themselves at least nominally on a fast-track for funding. The city and its leadership floats along on dreams. Of course, dreams are what they are, and things can go nightmarishly wrong. Former mayor Mel Lastman brought the city a pot-full of embarrassment when he made a cannibalism joke as he prepared to visit Africa to court International Olympic Committee (IOC) votes on
Toronto’s 2008 bid. The only thing that might have been worse would have been actually winning the bid over Beijing, and ending up with a suite of unusable facilities and terrible debt as Montreal did in 1976 – or just disappointing economic results as London did in 2012. Tory might be headed for a more ignominious defeat than that. There is serious question as to whether even his own council – even the portion of council that happily supports him – is at all supportive of going forward with the plan. On Tuesday, members of the city’s budget committee had little time for launching a bid for 2024. Budget chief Gary Crawford made it clear he was “cautiously” withdrawing from the idea – the cost of simply launching a bid being a major barrier. Etobicoke Centre Councillor John Campbell opined that even if the pri-
vate sector or some other level of government were to front the $50 to $60 million it costs to launch a bid, the city would still be best to stay away. Others, like York Centre Councillor James Pasternak suspected with Los Angeles entering the race, winning the Olympics would simply be impossible for 2024. Perhaps, he thought, 2028 might work, but with a novel and so-far againstthe-rules strategy of teaming up with Buffalo, New York, for an international bid. Based on all of that, it looks as though no matter how mightily Tory is tempted, the better judgement of his friends on council will prevail – and our mayor will find himself hauled back from the bright Olympic flame, before his wings get any more than a little singed. Sculptor Blake Ward challenges the ‘Depth of Perception’ at exhibit
3101 Bloor St West, Suite 409
416-237-0800
Sculptor Blake Ward is pursuing the career he set out to do when he was a child. Asked if he ever imagined his life would turn out this way? “Every day. It’s what I always wanted,” Ward replied. He credits his mother who he said was instrumental in exposing him to art and instilling in him this passion of creation. “I knew then that there was only one path for me,” Ward told The Villager via email from the Arctic. Graduating with a sculpture degree from the University of Alberta, the Yellowknifeborn, Edmonton-raised Ward moved to Paris where he studied figurative sculpture. “I was lucky and was able to study under an excellent teacher for four years and that

was the beginning of what I can only qualify today as both a blessing and an obsession,” he said. Ward will be presenting his second solo exhibition in Toronto at Articsok Gallery, 1697 St. Clair Ave. W. until Sept. 19. When he began creating the pieces for the exhibit
at Articsok, titled ‘Depth of Perception,’ Ward said he wanted to take bronze figurative sculpture and “make it everything it has never been.” “As a result, I opened them up, layered the surface and created an undeniably individual inner structure for them,” he said. “The title of this exhibition reflects the work on a conceptual level. The ‘Spirit’ collection is all about inner beauty, self-awareness and mindfulness. It relates directly to how we perceive our world. The deeper we look, the more we see. “Truth comes with cognition, which can only bring us freedom,” Ward said. He’s inspired by people and when he’s struck with an idea, he just runs with it.

That’s why Kopystansky has decided to cycle across Canada, in commemoration of her first born, but also in honour of her second daughter, Adriana, and the 10,000 Canadian children – who at any given time – could be battling the disease. This will be her second cross country ride from Vancouver to Halifax as a national rider for the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride, described as one of the biggest and most ambitious charity cycling events on behalf of childhood cancer in the world. riders on a 17-day journey beginning Thursday, Sept. 10 in Vancouver and will finish up on Saturday, Sept. 26 in Halifax. Each day, the cyclists will each cover between 150 and 220 kilometres, joined for shorter stints by thousands of other cyclists in cities across Canada. The group will participate in community events and will visit many of the 17 pediatric oncology centres and hospitals along the way. “Taissa’s colour is blue so when I cycle, I paint my nail blue on my ring finger. It leads to my heart. I tie a blue ribbon to my handlebars so it’s always in my field of vision,” Kopystansky said. One hundred per cent of donations go toward improving the survival rate and quality of life for children and their families impacted by cancer. A s o f We d n e s d a y, Kopystansky had reached 75 per cent of her $50,000
fundraising goal. She recently hosted a ‘Nailing Kids Cancer’ fundraiser, during which she invited people to get their nails painted blue while making a $28 donation to her campaign. For Kopystansky, the ride is a healing journey. Through her participation, she says she would like to help others to be able to change their story. “Hearing the words, ‘Your child has cancer,’ it’s devastating,” Kopystansky said. “You don’t give up, you don’t lose hope. The most important thing is, you hope they get well, that they find a cure.” Donations can be made in person at Swansea Village Pharmasave, 2388 Bloor St. W. Each donor’s name will be put on a bright blue star, which Kopystansky will take with her across the country as a show of support.

Latest proposal includes 43 rental units, reduced from 51 >>>from page 1 penthouse is sunken, Keenan pointed out, so would not add to the height of the building. The proposed building is comprised of 43 rental units, reduced from 51 units originally, 28 one-bedroom, 14 two-bedroom and one three-bedroom unit. The building would
include step backs on the south and east facades, including notching in the corner at grade to accomm o d a t e t h e vo l u m e o f pedestrians at that corner; at the third storey to create a cornice line; at the fifth, sixth and seventh storey on Dundas Street West and every storey above the third along Pacific Avenue; on the west
side above the sixth storey to respond residents’ concern that the building would create a “blank wall.” The developer is proposing greater step backs at the rear of the building to reduce its protrusion into the angular plane. There will be more masonry, especially on the first three storeys. There will
be 44 bicycle parking spaces, 27 parking spaces and three visitor spots behind the building. widened sidewalks The Dundas Street West sidewalk will be widened, with a sidewalk zone of 6 to 7.5 metres along Pacific Avenue with rows of pavers
along the road and a concrete sidewalk in front of the building. “More streetscape improvements will be discussed during the Site Plan process,” Keenan said. The proposal will go to Toronto City Council Sept. 30. To find out more, visit www.2978dundasproposal.
