Longtime Parkdale resident Elena Munce says living in the vicinity of the Canadian International Air Show (CIAS) is like being a “canary in a coal mine.” “It feels violent,” said Munce, a 20-year resident of the neighbourhood. The noise rattles windows and causes pets to cower in fear. The deafening sound is not celebratory for everyone, Munce pointed out. “The air show has always bothered me because I think of the diverse population,” she told The Villager. There are those who come from war-torn countries where the sight and sound of military jets flying overhead can conjure up memories of death and destruction. Now, Munce has a ninemonth-old son, whose sleep pattern was interrupted by the sounds of the air show, which took place over the Labour Day weekend. He’d get startled awake from a deep sleep with >>>NASH, page 15

Get ready to polka on Ronces Ninth annual Polish festival kicks off with Sept. 12 polka party HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Get ready to go Polish for a weekend. The ninth annual Roncesvalles Polish Festival will take over the neighbourhood Sept. 13 and 14. The weekend promises cultural displays, films and slideshows. “We’ve added some new features this year,” said Keith Denning, manager of the Roncesvalles Village BIA. “This year with the assistance of the festival’s official patron, Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Toronto, we’re bringing some beautiful cultural and histori-

cal displays.” According to Denning, there will be a giant video wall showing different information about Poland. “One of the main reasons for this is that it’s a very significant anniversary year for Poland,” he said. “It’s the 25th anniversary of the end of Communism in Poland, it’s the 10th anniversary of their admission into the European Union and this is the year Pope John Paul II has been made a saint.” The festival will also have polka, disco polo and Górale bands. It wouldn’t be a Polish festival without some traditional dishes. Attendees will have the chance to taste Polish culinary delights such

as award-winning perogies from Supreme Pierogies, bigos, kielbasa, borscht, pickles and zapiekanka. “It’s looking like it’s going to be even bigger this year,” said Denning. The weekend will kick off with a polka party Friday, Sept. 12 with Ed Guca, John Gora and Polka Family Band at St. Casimir’s Church, 156 Roncesvalles Ave., in the auditorium from 8 p.m. to midnight. On Saturday, Sept. 13 the festival will run from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., while Sunday’s festivities run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Battles need to be driven by more than NIMBYism

Write us

S

ometimes, the NIMBY (not-in-my-backyard) argument just doesn’t work. While it’s our democratic right to speak up when we’ve got something to say and we’re proud that resident and business groups do so in Toronto, make sure your issue is bigger than just you. Do your homework. Ensure you’ve got strong arguments and consider the bigger picture – is this change needed for the greater good? A group of Scarborough residents lost their NIMBY battle last week and were told to ‘suck it up’ after city council approved a controversial TTC bus garage in their neighbourhood. Despite arguing the location was inappropriate, the matter went through because the land was zoned heavy industrial (thus, buyer beware when you moved in, they were told), finding a new site would delay the project and drive up costs. TTC our view staff maintained there weren’t any other locations available Have something anyway. So residents were asked to ‘shoulder the load’ for the good to say before of the city. you speak out In that case, the project was needed and the location made sense, regardless the lack of alternative sites. Buyer beware may also be applied to homes that exist under flight paths. In Etobicoke, a residential group from Markland Wood is still pushing to change an increase in night flights from Pearson airport that fly over their homes, even though Transport Canada approved the changes last summer. City council recently agreed to have its city manager review the issue, though the local councillor reminded residents, ‘the airport is also a business.’ And just last week, Parkdale-High Park MPP Peggy Nash sent a letter to the Canadian International Air Show on behalf of her constituents to suggest the annual air show be relocated. Citing the ‘deafening’ and ‘frightening’ noise, she says it’s a major disturbance for many Toronto residents. It’s also a six-decade tradition that draws thousands of spectators and whose planes comply to noise regulations set out by Transport Canada. Plus, it’s over in three days. Chances the complaints will yield any change are slim. Take serious stock of your chances before pitching a NIMBY battle, because sometimes, they’re not worth the time. But if you’ve got the numbers, the facts and the political will, kudos to you for trying.

column

Olivia Chow lays it all on the table P olitics is a gamble. Voters place their bet on election day, when they put their tax dollars on one candidate or another who they think will best represent their interest over the next four years. Candidates and their campaign teams place multiple bets throughout the campaign. Some of those bets are small – and some of them are huge. Olivia Chow put all her money on the table Tuesday morning – with a financing plan that would raise a lot of money for transit and school breakfast programs, and for better or worse raise the profile of a campaign that over the summer seems to have stalled in the middle ground. Chow’s plan – to raise the land transfer tax on homes selling for over $2 million by one per cent, for an estimated $20 million a year – is a big step away from that middle ground. Until now, Chow’s campaign has been

david nickle the city

one of deathly moderation. She would keep taxes low but not freeze them; kill the costly Scarborough subway plan and return to a fully funded light rail plan to replace the Scarborough RT; add some buses; and do complicated things having to do with housing and small business and youth to provide marginal improvements. And in her person, she would provide the only sure-fire way to make sure Rob Ford wouldn’t be mayor. All of that combined seems to have mainly inspired the voters who supported her strongly in early 2014 to look elsewhere in the summer. Chow’s new fiscal policy might well drive off even more support. She is proposing a tax increase after all – an increase to a tax

upon which even former mayor David Miller (whose council imposed the thing) didn’t dare campaign. The only candidate charting in polls at all who’s talking about the necessity for tax increases is David Soknacki, and he’s stuck in single digits. The only candidate proposing specific tax increases is criminal lawyer Ari Goldkind, and he’s not charting at all. This land transfer tax idea is definitely an all-ornothing kind of thing. But one can see how Chow and her advisors think it might have some appeal. To begin with, it deals with a hole in Chow’s transit platform – specifically, that for her to increase bus service by 10 per cent would require more buses than the TTC has on the road. A land transfer tax increase covers that tidily. And it’s difficult to argue compassionately against funding more school breakfast programs.

As well, it is likely only a handful of Torontonians even remotely likely to vote Chow would be impacted by a land transfer tax increase on $2 million homes, and a thimble-full would be impacted enough to complain about it: hardships endured by such a tax grab are surely the first among first-world problems. Of course, that scarcely matters in the daily pile-ons that occur in a Toronto mayoralty race, and in coming out with this policy the Chow campaign has painted a target on their candidate for Tory and Ford certainly and perhaps Soknacki as well. But the calculation has obviously been made: better to be talked about as a tax-and-spend progressive, than not talked about at all.

Toronto Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) started a poster campaign in fall 2012, which has gone viral with requests for the poster coming from around the world.

Toronto PFLAG’s inclusive poster campaign goes viral JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com What began as a campaign designed to open the minds of Toronto students to their LGBTQ peers has made waves all over the world. Toronto Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) started a poster campaign in the fall of 2012, with local middle schools and high schools receiving copies of the posters. The campaign features two posters, one with a group of teen boys with the caption “He’s gay and we’re cool with that” and another with a group of teen girls reading “She’s gay and we’re cool with that.” The posters were aimed to stop students from using violence, slurs or other forms of bullying to marginalize their LGBTQ peers. ‘A lot of calls’ “We sent the posters out through the TDSB and said ‘if you want additional posters or you want us to come and speak at your school, give us a call,’” said Toronto PFLAG president Anne Creighton. “We started getting a lot of calls and the campaign was so successful, we decided to run the program the following year.” While it was no surprise

... it started when we got requests from a school in Maryland and spread from there. – Anne Creighton

the posters caught on in the Toronto area, Toronto PFLAG was pleasantly surprised when they began getting requests for the posters from further and further away. “I don’t know what happened, but it started when we got requests from a school in Maryland and spread from there,” Creighton said. “We got requests from Germany after an exchange student saw the posters in the U.S.” Larger orders have come in from Vancouver, Washington, D.C. and other locales. The original plan was to print 1,000 of the posters, but Toronto PFLAG is currently having more printed, bringing the total number of posters distributed to 7,000. While the posters were originally targeted at middle school and high school students, Creighton noted requests have come in for younger students, as well, with some elementary schools requesting the materials. Naturally, Toronto PFLAG was happy to help spread the message of inclusiveness to younger kids. One message that hits home

for younger students in particular is that LGBTQ students are just like any other. “Some younger kids look at the posters and try to (determine which of the students in the poster is gay),” Creighton said. “Older students will tell them ‘that’s the point – you can’t tell.’” Toronto PFLAG’s poster campaign was inspired by a similar campaign run out of a private school in Ireland. It has become so popular, Creighton said, that one Toronto PFLAG parent has become what the organization calls its “postmistress.” $20,000 donation Of course, the posters are not free for Toronto PFLAG, who are responsible for the printing and delivery costs. A $20,000 donation from BMO has helped ensure those costs are covered. Toronto PFLAG expects that, with the start of the new school year, orders will once again start pouring in. “I expect in a couple of weeks, we’ll start getting requests,” Creighton said. “We respond to requests from wherever – if we can get (the posters) to them, we’ll send them.”

Sister ‘overwhelmed with gratitude’ at help offered by volunteers, strangers >>>from page 1 ers, volunteers searching on foot and setting up observation posts, there is still no sign of Currie, an avid cyclist, artist and life model. “The general public is pretty switched on,” said family friend Clive Burt. “About 40 per cent of people I spoke to had seen the posters and news reports. The general public is looking for her.” As of Tuesday morning, Burt said he had asked volunteers to stand down and get some rest so that as soon as there is another sighting, they’re “ready to rock ’n’ roll.” “If people could keep an eye out for Kit’s bike – if we could find her bike or purse, police would have dogs, horses, helicopters out looking for her,” said Burt. Currie’s sister Jennifer Currie-Roy said everyone from people in coffee shops to workers in fire stations is aware of the missing woman. “ We w e re t o l d by a random firefighter that this

Report abandoned bikes to city With students returning to school, the city experiences increased pressure for safe and secure bike parking. To free up much needed bicycle parking, the City of Toronto is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying abandoned bikes for removal over the next few weeks. Residents can assist with this cleanup by calling 311 to report any bike that appears

to be abandoned on sidewalks or within the public right-ofway. To help identify the abandoned bikes correctly, callers are asked to identify the bike with as much information as possible, including the colour of the frame, the type of bike and the location, preferably with an address. In 2013, the city removed more than 850 abandoned

bikes to make more bike parking available. Bikes that are clearly derelict will be removed immediately. Where there is some question about whether a bike is abandoned, the city will place a notification on the bike.

Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System

What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the

Tips for relocating the whole family Moving is seldom an easy task, and is often ranked among the most stressful events in a person’s life. That stress is only heightened when an entire family is making the move and an adult is starting a new job simultaneously. Various factors prompt people to move, from job opportunities to the desire to be closer to family members to wanting to live in a nicer climate. Those moving are often married couples between the ages of 25 and 44 with one or two children between the ages of 2 and 11. To make the process go more smoothly, consider the following tips. 1. Gradually introduce the concept of moving. Moving is a decision to be discussed with the whole family, even with young children who may not fully understand the process. Kids who are involved in looking at new homes or voicing opinions about which amenities they desire in a new neighborhood will feel empowered and in control.

2. Research potential new neighborhoods carefully. Finding a new residence is not entirely about buying a home that fits the family and its needs. It also is about finding a desirable neighborhood and community. A good school district is an important factor, as is proximity to recreation, local culture and transportation. Drive around a neighborhood during different times of the day to gauge how active it is. Investigating businesses in the area can also help gauge the personality of a given neighborhood. 3. Work with an experienced agent. A real estate agent who is familiar with a variety of communities is a great asset. A buyer’s agent will find homes and negotiate on the part of the buyer, having your best interests in mind. Because the agent will be paid a commission on a portion of the sale price, which doesn’t come out of your pocket, it is in the real estate agent’s best interest to help you find a home you can call

your own. In addition, the agent will handle many of the tasks that may be overwhelming if you were doing them on your own, such as scouring available listings, waiting for inspections or filling out pertinent paperwork. With a real estate agent handling these tasks, families can remove some of the stress from the moving process. 4. Pack children’s rooms last. Young children who see favorite items disappearing into bubble wrapping and boxes may start to feel anxious. It’s not uncommon for preschoolers to act out or experience nightmares during the moving process. Maintain a sense of normalcy in the home as long as possible. Begin by packing nonessential items, only packing kids’ items when your moving date is right around the corner. Let children say good-bye to familiar haunts and even to their old home. 5. Plan a school orientation. Take advantage of any programs schools

offer to acclimate kids to their new environment. Kids often leave friends behind when moving to a new home. The faster they get back to a normal routine, the better it will be for them. Schools are where children will make new friends and participate in social

Man arrested in St. Clair hit-and-run “The family is trying to arrange for his body to be sent back (to Africa). They’re trying to raise some funds,” Smith said. Owen Thompson, 33, of Toronto has been charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing death. Anyone with information is asked to call traffic services at 416-808-1900.

A man has been charged in connection to a weekend hit-and-run that took the life of a student from Zimbabwe who had just celebrated his 31st birthday. Police said the pedestrian was in the westbound lanes of St. Clair Avenue west of Symes Road when he was struck by a minivan shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday. “He was struck and left on the road,” said Const. Hugh Smith, noting the man had been celebrating his birthday. The driver fled, continuing westbound on St. Clair. “He got into work and realized what he’d done and he contacted his lawyer, which is how we found the vehicle so quickly,” Smith said. Detectives made arrangements over the weekend for the man to turn himself in. “He did appear when he was supposed to appear at the station this morning,” Smith said Tuesday. The man was arrested at 6:30 a.m. at traffic services. The victim, the city’s 25th traffic fatality of the year, was pronounced dead a short time after the collision.

Junction train victim was 36-year-old man The person who was struck and killed by a train in the Junction Aug. 27 was a 36-year old man, according to police. A three-car locomotive freight train travelling westbound on the CP Rail line between St. Clair Avenue West and Dundas Street West at Runnymede Road struck the man just before 2 p.m. last Wednesday. The man suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The involved train was subsequently stopped at the Milton GO station for investigation. Police are not releasing the man’s name, nor the circumstances surrounding the collision, according to Police Const. Jennifer Sidhu.

In response to concerns, Nash has written to CIAS executive director Jennifer Brown. In her letter, Nash acknowledges what a popular event the show is and that it attracts thousands of spectators. In addition to frightening children and pets and traumatizing residents who are native to war-torn countries, there are those who feel they are “denied the enjoyment of spending time in their yard or in public spaces, since the noise keeps them inside,”

High Park residents head to OMB over Grenadier Square condo proposal High Park Coalition representatives will be heading to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) Monday, Sept. 8, alongside experienced technical professionals armed with a strategy to demonstrate why the proposed Grenadier Square condominium development does not fit in the area. The coalition, comprised of local residents dedicated to fighting overdevelopment in the neighbourhood, is calling on neighbours to help demonstrate community opposition at the OMB hearing, which begins Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. at 655 Bay St. on the 16th floor.

The High Park Coalition was granted party status for the OMB hearing this month while the developer had approached the group with a request for mediation in July. To be successful, the coalition needs a roster of paid professionals in its corner to lend expertise. This includes the coalition’s lawyer and urban planner, who were instrumental in guiding residents through the early stages of their fight, as well as an urban designer and arborist, who will provide critical counsel during the next two phases. defend our case
