An accessory to more awareness Family pushes on with fundraising campaign, despite mourning the loss of its inspiration LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com She put up “one heck of a fight,” but tragically Demetra “Didi” Diles, 52, succumbed to pancreatic cancer, seven months after her diagnosis. Since Diles’ passing in March, her family is still digesting the fact that a once “healthy and most vibrant” woman is gone. “It’s weird. All of us are going through our own emotions. We’re just trying to accept it,” said her daughter Marianne Musi, who lives on Quebec Avenue with her husband. “It feels like it didn’t happen, that she’s on vacation.” Despite their grief, the Diles’ family remains committed to raising awareness and funds through their Accessorize for Awareness campaign, for a deadly cancer that has just a six percent survival rate. Since last October, Musi and her sister-in-law Kimberly Lamontagne have created a variety of purple bracelets with a wide selection of charms. Bracelet sales brought in as much as $8,000 within the campaign’s first month. At the time of Diles’ death, the future of the Accessorize for Awareness campaign was uncertain, according to Lamontagne. What was once “worked on with hope became a constant reminder of our deep loss,” she said. “I am happy to say, however, that we are forging ahead with the campaign – it’s what Didi would have wanted,” Lamontagne said. “No one should have to face what she and countless others do because

pancreatic cancer continuously falls under the radar.” As the campaign nears its first anniversary, new charms are being created. Few people realize just how devastating the disease is, Musi said. “My mother was a healthy, 52-year-old woman. She walked every day. By the time she died, she was down to 80 lbs. She couldn’t walk; she couldn’t go to the bathroom on her own,” she said. “It’s so hard to watch a family member go through that.” Diles experienced pain for as long as a year before her diagnosis in what she thought was her stomach, according to her daughter, however, she had always suffered from digestive issues and so thought nothing of it. Pancreatic cancer is seriously underfunded, receiving only 0.1 per cent of all research funds, according to a report by the non-profit institute Charity Intelligence Canada.

Wanted: a proper discussion on cycling

J

umping on your bicycle and hitting the streets of Toronto has become a complicated issue. It gets the backs up of both cyclists and motorists. Each side has complaints about the other: cyclists disobey the rules of the road; motorists don’t look out for cyclists. This kind of two-way antagonism helps no one, it only fuels fires that seem easily sparked. There has been much cycling talk lately. The city’s chief planner, Jennifer Keesmaat, teamed up with Cycle Toronto and took the cycling discussion on the road – on her bike. Using hydro corridors to allow for dedicated cycling, and of course dedicated bike lanes across the city all deserve listening to. On the heels of a study by University of Toronto PhD student Adrian Verster, who created a list of 50 dangerous intersections for cyclists in the city, a discussion on how to best implement cycling in Toronto is needed. And quickly. The supposed ‘war on the car our view /bicycle’ needs to stop. It serves no one. And with the city’s popuIntegrated lation growing quickly, cycling will become an ever-increasingplan for of transportation for many cycling a must mode people. Not surprisingly, the most dangerous intersections to cycle in the city are located in the old city of Toronto – on Bloor and Queen streets. However, there are dangerous intersections for cyclists across the city, including Lake Shore Blvd West and Parkside Drive in Bloor West Village (#25). If news reports prove anything, it is that there is always the chance you can get hurt – even killed – while riding your bike. It doesn’t matter where you ride your bike. Ontario Minister of Transportation Glen Murray announced on Friday the province’s 20-year vision for cycling, with the goal to make Ontario the number one province for cycling in Canada. This ambitious goal will need funding, dedication, and a clear vision tailored to each city across Ontario. A cookie-cutter approach will not work. The entirety of Toronto City Council is not expected to meet until October, but they are all back to work after Labour Day, including local community council meetings set for Sept. 10. Torontonians should not shy away from pushing for a proper, integrated cycling plan for the city. It’s been long discussed, much maligned, and often ignored. Councillors in the downtown core raise the issue often, but this should not be another downtown versus suburbs discussion.

Getting down with school terminology

W

ell moms and dads, how would you grade yourself in the helping out with the homework department now that the new school year has started? And be honest now. If you’ve got little ones new to the school system, no doubt a solid “A” is in order. We can all still hold our own with that group, I’m pretty sure. Alas, if you’ve got older kids, chances are you’re looking farther down the alphabet. A lot farther. Likely with a telescope. It has nothing to do with the curriculum getting more and more advanced, either. It’s being confronted once again with the same terminology we struggled with when we were that age. It was tough enough to understand a lot of the words and phrases they were giving us when we were seeing them every day. What chance do

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY we have now of figuring them out after such a long hiatus? Well, not to worry. You don’t have to feel intimidated anymore when a teenager asks you to explain something to them. I’ve provided the definitions for what are traditionally some of the more difficult concepts to grasp. 1. Hypotenuse. A vase hanging on a rope from the ceiling. 2. The value of Pi. The ability to turn even the blandest piece of ice cream into a mouth-watering delicacy. 3. Logarithm A lumberjack really getting down. 4. Misplaced modifier. It’s either in your purse or handbag next to the keys and the fob you can’t find.

You don’t have to feel intimidated anymore when a teenager asks you to explain something to them. I’ve provided the definitions.

5. The second law of thermodynamics? The one snuggled in between the first and third laws of thermodynamics. 6. Square root. A root that just isn’t with it. 7. A proper fraction. A fraction that gets it. 8. Past participle. A participle whose 15 minutes of fame are officially up. 9. Axiom What Jack used to chop down the beanstalkiom. 10. The periodic table. A table used infrequently. Like that fancy shmancy one gathering dust in the corner of the dining room that you only bring out to try and impress guests on the holi-

days. 11. An irregular verb. One that could definitely use more fibre. 12. The pluperfect. A plu that always remembers to say please and thank you, doesn’t put gum in his baby sister’s hair and when he goes to rent a DVD with his mom’s credit card, picks up a romantic movie for her such as Pretty Woman and not one for himself such as The Adventures of Wyatt Burp or the Flatulence Chronicles. Leash rule punishes good dogs and responsible owners To the editor: Re: ‘All bark, no bite: residents say off-leash rules unclear,’ News, Aug. 15 The Toronto bylaw requiring owners to keep their dogs on leashes was introduced to eliminate any possibility of dog bites, assuming that dogs on leashes would not bite. In my opinion, this law was a complete overreaction, similar to the equally ridiculous outlawing of all pit bulls in Ontario. The fact is, most dog owners love their dogs as members of their families and train them to be social, loving and safe. There are the few irresponsible owners who allow their

dogs to bark incessantly, to lunge at the end of their leashes, to be vicious – all of which is legal. As such, responsible dog owners have to coral their runners, fetchers, jumpers, barkers and other happy dogs in far too few and overcrowded off-leash dog parks. This is the one place these dogs can play and exercise freely, without a leash constantly stopping them from exploring new smells and doing the things that their breed instincts tell them to do. However, I can’t throw a ball or a stick to my retriever, who wants nothing more than to chase and retrieve. These irresponsible owners ruin it for all the

other owners who just want to walk their dogs to keep them healthy. Dog trainer Caesar Milan says the best treatment for dogs is exercise, discipline and then affection, in that order. But how can we exercise our dogs properly on a leash? We are restricted from parks, laneways and school yards in spite of there being no other traffic or people in those areas at times. Dogs need to run and chase and retrieve and socialize with other dogs. But the too few, too small, too crowded off-leash areas in Toronto are not sufficient. My suggestion is that the bylaw be amended to allow dog owners, whose

dogs have passed an obedience, health and social test, be allocated a special license allowing them to be off-leash in parks and laneways. This would allow dog owners to properly exercise their dogs and reduce the congestion of dogs in current offleash areas. As for an improvement in current off-leash areas, I have a few suggestions: create many more areas in neighbourhood parks to which the dogs can be walked; provide field areas where balls can be chucked without 30 dogs running after the ball and put water areas in all offleash areas. Brenda Morgan

Enforcement lacking in city’s off-leash parks To the editor: Re: ‘All bark, no bite: residents say off-leash rules unclear,’ News, Aug. 15 I read your recent article on the problems with the dogs offleash area (DOLA) in Rennie Park. Residents on Indian Grove have been experiencing the same problems with a DOLA installed in tiny Baird Park two years ago, across the street from our homes. We have been

subjected to barking at all hours of the day and night, yelling, fighting, increased vehicular traffic and illegal parking. Dog owners regularly use the area long after it is supposed to be closed. There has been no enforcement of regulations despite frequent complaints. Home owners who attempt to clear the compound after hours or ask people to quiet their dogs have been subject to threats and abuse. Commercial

dog walkers use the park despite a ban. In addition, the compound has placed 25 mature trees in danger, according to an arborist who assessed the effects of the installation on our behalf. The area occupied by the DOLA was formerly used by all members of the community, including dog owners and their pets, for a variety of activities. This area is now the exclusive domain of a

privileged minority. Despite promises from various parks’ officials to help us with our problems, nothing has been done. The city appears not to have the resources, or the will, to address these concerns. Based on our experience, I can predict with complete assurance that the situation will only get worse in Rennie Park.

Little Sydney McMahon got the VIP treatment at the Canadian International Air Show over the weekend – including a front row seat to the roaring show, meetand-greets with each of the fearless pilots, and a very special presentation of an aeronautics badge to add to her Girl Guide sash. “My favourite part was when the Dragon Lady and Red Star were up there,” said Sydney, 9, who belongs to the 163rd Toronto Girl Guides troop out of Kingsway Lambton United Church in Etobicoke. “They were, like, splitting and they were doing tricks.” Sydney, who attends Howard Junior Public School, was just one of about 40 Girl Guides from across the Greater Toronto Area invited to the Air Show this year. First, they were chauffeured to the site by bus, courtesy of Toronto Police Services, then they were treated to VIP seats just below the action thanks to the Canadian International Air Show. Sydney’s mom Laura McMahon, who helps lead the 163rd troop, called the experience a “fabulous” one – for both the girls involved and for their parents. “We had such a great time. I wish the girls could have more experiences like that,” she said Monday, noting that the acrobatic shows were favourites among the girls.

Nine-year-old Sydney McMahon, a Girl Guide who attends Howard Junior Public School, gets the thumbs up from Snowbird captains Thomas Edelson and Steve MacDonald.

“I’ve never seen the air show like that – we were able to see and hear everything up so close. It was fabulous. The kids loved it.” Seated just west of Ontario Place on the waterfront, the participating Girl Guides, who hailed from all across Toronto, Burlington and Hamilton, got the chance to mingle with the pilots after they’d performed. “Each set of pilots that came in would talk to the girls about what they did, what kind of planes they had and what the capability of those planes is. They made it really interactive for them,” McMahon said, noting that, in addition to pilots from the world-renowned Snowbirds and CF-18 Hornet demo team, the Girl Guides had the opportunity to meet and ask questions of the air traffic controller from the air show’s

‘boss tower’ and parachutists from the Lucas Oil Jumpers, among many others. “It was quite exciting for them.” At the end of the show came quiz time. In order to earn their aeronautics badge, each of the girls had to properly identify the parts of a plane on a diagram. “It wasn’t that hard,” boasted Sydney, noting that with the addition of Sunday’s new badge, her sash is getting pretty full. “Now I have 15 badges – travel, first aid, birthday planning, cultural awareness, ice skating, my pet, cookie, bicycling, hiking, singing, camp fire leading, exploring, canoeing, basic camp and now aeronautics.” Is your child’s troop doing anything exciting? PUBLIC CONSULTATION MEETINGS NOISE WALL DESIGNS – HAVE YOUR SAY! GO Transit would like your input on the design of the Georgetown South (GTS) Project noise walls being built in your neighbourhood. Be a part of shaping one of the major projects of Metrolinx’s regional transportation plan, The Big Move. Since 2011, we have been consulting with the communities along the corridor about our noise mitigation plan. Last year we began recruiting members from eight segments of the corridor to be a part of Community Advisory Committees (CAC). These committees have brought together residents, business owners, community associations and elected representatives to discuss how the wall designs can be integrated into the existing neighbourhood landscape. Since April 2013, we have held over 24 meetings with CAC members along the GTS corridor. Design concepts have been developed based on ideas and concerns brought forward by the CAC members.

In September, we will be hosting four public meetings for you and your neighbours to tell us what you think about the design concepts. The meetings will take place in four different neighbourhoods representing the eight CACs along the GTS corridor. Please join us and have your voice heard. At each meeting there will be a presentation beginning at 6:30 p.m. to present the noise wall design concepts specific to the areas listed below. You will also have the opportunity to view the designs for the entire GTS Project corridor. Come join us, take a look and tell us what you think! Attend meeting to discuss future rail corridor noise walls The community has the chance to view and give feedback on design concepts for a noise wall planned by Metrolinx/ GO Transit. The walls are proposed to mask the sound of increased diesel train traffic on the Georgetown rail corridor, but have been highly criticized by residents and transit groups who are calling on Metrolinx/GO Transit to explore “living” green walls. Some communities along the corridor have also asked that no walls be built in certain areas until the true traffic and noise conditions are understood, especially in the context of proposed electrification of the rail corridor, which would mean quieter and lighter vehicles. Two upcoming meet-

ings will show the noise wall design concepts Metrolinx/Go Transit have come up with. It is also an opportunity for residents to review the preliminary design options and tell GO Transit what they think about the noise wall design concepts. Meetings are set for Sept. 17 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at The Lithuanian House at 1573 Bloor St. W. and Thursday, Sept. 19 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Metrolinx/ GO transit Presentation Centre, 901 King St. W., at the corner of Strachan Avenue. The public feedback period runs from Sept. 10 to Oct. 2, 2013. To view the concepts, visit www.gotransit. com/gts. For info, email gts@gotransit.com or call 416-581-1300.

FRI SEPT 6 - SUN SEPT 8

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR,

CATHY BEAULIEU It is with great pleasure that I present to you the 2013 Taste of the Kingsway (TOTK). Every year we make it bigger and better, to suite and connect to the character of this community, and give something for everyone that visits. Please, take a walk and see all the beautiful churches. As a business community we are very blessed with so many places were one can calm the mind and lighten the hart and spirit. Some of the best Ideas have been born

in Church basements, including the Taste of the Kingsway Festival. It was a local church that started this community event, inviting one and all to join in. At the Taste be sure to check out the line up of entertainment on the stages. Take a look at the historic tent, to see the Kingsway then and now. You are invited to walk in to the businesses and ask if they have a Kingsway special. You may be pleasantly surprised as to what you are offered just by asking. To truly get a taste of KINGSWAY you should visit as many businesses as you can. The Kingsway is unique with its mediums and overflowing with flowers more so than any other business community. Did you know that because of the mediums there is a significant drop in the road pedestrian casualties? We hope you take the time to visit us during the street festival, and we invite you to come during other times of the year. Along the Kingsway you will find very friendly merchants and real neighbours. Here is the line up of exciting events

happening in the Kingsway this fall:  The Annual Bed Race will take place in October in support of the Dorothy Lea Hospice. Saturday October 26th is Pumpkin Fest where awards will be given for best costume and best pumpkin decoration.  On November 23 2013 at 1:30 PM, Our Lady of Sorrows hosts Carolling in the Kingsway in support of the Out of the Cold Program. This annual Christmas Concert has graced the Kingsway for over 12 years. The concert is a standing room only, non-denominational Christmas concert. Choirs from 6 local churches are under the leadership of the talented Conductor, Shawn Grenke. People come back year after year for this charity concert, as it is that good. Come out to experience this beautiful Christmas concert and support a good cause!  Check out the restaurants after the concert and later join us for the Cavalcade of Lights ceremonies. We will have a real Christmas tree, and lighting ceremony. The Kingsway is full of service-oriented

businesses. Please walk in to a nail spa and get polished up. Visit one of the Kingsway’s Optical locations where a qualified confidant will assist you with your vision. If you are planning on taking a vacation, the Kingsway’s travel agents are here to assist you with the best service possible. People of all ages, take care of the retail therapy and check out the clothiers, they will update your look. The Kingsway has many Doctors and health care specialists dedicated to keeping their patients and clients happy and healty. Get advice from the pharmacist, or do your legal banking. The Kingsway has it all. We are a full service business community. If the ready made is not your size we will make it fit. So it is safe to start here and the rest will follow, we will satisfy all your needs and tailor it to fit your budget. I wish you all a great time have a safe and fun visit with us and look forward of seeing you again soon.

Join us at the Rock Climbing Wall! Proceeds Go Directly to Dorothy Ley Hospice

KINGSWAY FACTS & HISTORY  Between 1906 and 1912, Robert Home Smith bought 3000 acres of land along the Humber River between Eglinton and Lake Ontario, which he developed into subdivisions such as Baby Point, Riverside Drive and Kingsway Park (now usually just called “The Kingsway”.)  The first two houses in The Kingsway were 43 and 47 The Kingsway, built in 1924 for Edward J. Cousins and Edward L. Cousins, father and son, respectively.  Between 1924 and 1947, 665 homes were built in The Kingsway.  The Kingsway was the first road paved in Etobicoke.  The Kingsway is wider than other roads in The Kingsway because Home Smith had planned to have an electric railway run down the centre of the street between Dundas and Bloor.  Royal York Road was named after the Royal York Golf Course, opened by a partnership between the Royal York Hotel and Robert Home Smith in 1929. That golf course was renamed St. George’s Golf and Country Club in 1946. To help celebrate The Kingsway BIA’s 40th anniversary, a tent has been set up at The Taste of the Kingsway festival September 6-7-8. Inside is an exciting display of old photos of The Kingsway area, along with photos taken in the same locations today. Look for the sign “THEN & NOW in The Kingsway” on the tent. The Etobicoke Historical Society will be there to answer your questions all weekend!

ripped off and torn up. In response, the couple decided to erect two

flags on their second floor out of reach. However, the abuse didn’t stop there. They discovered bags of dog feces on their front lawn or on their car and graffiti on the sidewalk outside their house that said, ‘Be Happy Not Gay.’ The couple changed it to read ‘Be Happy AND Gay.’ The police have been notified and are investigating. “We’ve had so much support,” said Harrison, adding that Glad Day Bookshop has initiated a fundraising campaign while Camp restaurant

on Jane Street will donate food for the barbecue. Christened ‘Neighbours United for Inclusion,’ the group now has its own Facebook page, which states, “...Rather than retreating in fear, our community is affirming our collective desire to build a neighbourhood, and a world, based on inclusion, support and love.

Our response to hate is a celebration of inclusion.” Many are curious as to why Murphy and Harrison choose to fly rainbow flags. “Too many people think it’s an advertisement of someone’s sexuality. It has nothing to do with our sexuality. It’s everything to do with the world we want to live in, one that’s accepting, inclusive,”

Murphy said. Originally planned for their front lawn, the community barbecue has garnered so much interest that the couple is in the midst of looking for a larger, more suitable location. To get the latest updates on the community barbecue as it comes together, visit on.fb. me/15BfuK9

Parent-teacher relationships Once a school year begins, many students spend more time in the classroom with their teachers than they do at home with their parents. That’s especially true in dual-income households where both parents work outside of the home. Because kids spend so much time with their teachers, it’s important for parents to work toward building a strong parent-teacher relationship. Such a relationship fosters communication, which can help a young student do his or her best in and out of the classroom. Parents interested in developing a relationship with their kids’ teachers can take several steps to make that happen. • Meet your child’s teacher at the beginning of the

year. Teachers have many students come in and out of their classroom on any given day, so it can be hard for teachers to initiate a relationship with parents. Introduce yourself at the onset of the school year, providing phone numbers and e-mail addresses where you can be reached. Let the teacher know you’re available for discussion any time during the school year and that you look forward to the coming school year and working with the teacher as the year progresses. • Attend “Back to School Night.” School events like an open house or a “Back to School Night” are a great way to help kids grow acclimated to their school.

WE MAKE LEARNING MUSIC

FÜN!

But such events also make great opportunities for parents to learn more about their kids’ teachers than they might have learned during their introductory meeting. Such events may allow teachers to explain the curriculum for the upcoming year, and teachers may feel encouraged when parents show an active interest in such events. • Prioritize parent-teacher conferences. Unlike an introductory meeting or an open house at the beginning of the school year, a parent-teacher conference allows parents and teachers to specifically discuss students in private. Teachers may provide insight into how a child is performing and behaving in the

classroom, offering advice as to how to improve that performance or suggestions as to how to encourage kids to keep up the good work. Such conferences may be your only opportunity for a one-on-one, discussion about your child, so make sure you don’t miss these conferences. • Keep the channels of communication open. If it’s been awhile since you’ve spoken to your child’s teacher, don’t be afraid to e-mail the teacher to check in or see if you can lend a helping hand. In addition, if your child really enjoys a teacher’s class, don’t be hesitant to share that with the teacher. Teachers appreciate compliments just like other professionals, and parents should express their gratitude to those teachers who work hard to make learning fun. Establishing a strong relationship with a child’s teacher can help parents ensure students are making the most of their time in the classroom. – MS

Transit service boosted this month The TTC boosted service to many of its transit routes as of Sept. 1. Thirty-three bus routes, plus streetcar and subway service, have ended lessfrequent summer service in response to increased ridership with the start of the fall schedule. Students looking to get a student photo ID can opt to have their picture taken at Sherbourne Station from Monday to Friday between 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The ID is a must to purchase a discounted monthly pass or pay a student fare. meeting to discuss

wnoise wall barrier Metrolinx is planning a series of west-end public meetings to discuss proposed designs for a five-metre noise wall barrier to go up along the Georgetown South GO rail corridor. Four meetings are scheduled this month starting Tues. Sept. 10 at the York West Active Living Centre,

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT at 1901 Weston Rd. At the meeting, participants will get the chance to sound off on design concepts which were released back in July. Anyone who can’t attend the meetings can provide feedback online at www.gotransit.com/gts Metrolinx says the barriers are required to lessen the noise impact from increased diesel train traffic when the Union Pearson Express air rail link opens in 2015. PETA launches new

wcampaign on go

Pe o p l e f o r t h e Et h i c a l Treatment of Animals (PETA) recently launched a new awareness campaign on GO Transit trains. The Veggie Revolution is an initiative from the provocative organization’s youth wing peta2 which posts there would be enough food in the world to end starvation – if everyone switched to a vegan diet. One hundred and forty-

six ads depicting an impoverished young girl with the tagline “When You Eat Meat, She Doesn’t Eat” were posted on GO train cars at the end of August.

car-sharing parking

wspots open up

New on-street parking spaces were made available to carshare users this week. Around 26 additional spots are now open in nine locations around the downtown core and East York, which expands a pilot project launched in 2009 by the city to encourage car-sharing as an alternative to car-ownership. There are three carshare providers serving the city: Car2Go, Zipcar and Autoshare. An estimated 40,000 Torontonians make regular use of car-shares. Toronto will also host the 2013 CarSharing Association conference Sept. 16 to 17. Rahul Gupta is The Villager’s transit reporter. His column runs every Thursday. Reach him on Twitter: @TOinTRANSIT

Bloordale scoops provincial silver Bloordale’s major mosquito ‘A’ team settled for the silver medal at the Ontario Baseball Association provincial championships in Niagara Falls over the Labour Day weekend. Having secured the gold medal at the Toronto Baseball Association (TBA) championships earlier in the month, the Bloordale team was denied another gold medal in the double knock-out championship tournament by a pesky team from the village of Wyoming, near Sarnia.

In fact, it was the only team they lost to; but unfortunately they lost to them twice. Bloordale compiled wins over the host team from Niagara Falls, South-West London and Milton before losing to Wyoming for the first time. Bloordale then went back to work, beating Kitchener in the semifinal game. This earned them a berth in the championship game where they lost for the second time to their nemesis, Wyoming.

in a pinch: The Bloordale major mosquito ‘A’ team earned the silver medal at the provincial championships. Back row, left to right, Mark Price (coach) and Jamie Reed (coach). Second Row: Dave Willson (coach), Kennedy Taylor, Nicholas Firmani, Lucas Leja, Jackson Howe, Carson Dimech, Justice Lawton, Mike Barry (coach). Front Row: Curtis Price, Liam Barry, Madison Barry, Josh Komonen and Daniel Smart-Reed. Courtesy photo
