Movie scenic artist Erin Leslie creates for Off Camera exhibit when off the clock Gallery 1313 hosts the exhibit until Sunday to coincide with TIFF event LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com As a scenic artist on such films as the yet-to-be-released film Suicide Squad and the action-adventure Pompei movie, Erin Leslie borrowed from her wide range of skills. A High Park area resident, Leslie was tapped to create exact replicas of props actors would use, such as weapons and accessories, like an axe or tomahawk. There would be one real one and 10 soft props that would come out of a mold looking like black rubber that needed painting. “It’s a very dynamic, diverse career with lots of ups and downs,” Leslie told The Villager. “There’s a great diversity of skills that are required – and a lot of it has to be learned on the job.” There is no other job that can compare, Leslie added. People come to the profession from different backgrounds. There are a large number in the department who have an arts background. Scenic artists are the ones responsible for creating a set that looks like the White House or a crack house. They know how to create the look of peeling paint or a plaster wall. Leslie landed in the job of scenic artist while a student at OCAD University. “I work often seven days a week, working very long hours,” she said. And, yet, despite her busy schedule, Leslie managed to squeeze in
time to paint. She is one of 50 artists who are exhibiting as part of Off Camera, a group exhibition of art works by members of I.A.T.S.E. (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and Moving Picture Technicians) Local 873, which takes place at Gallery 1313 on Queen Street West, until Sunday, Sept. 13. Like many of her colleagues, she took the time between shows to indulge her artistic career. “Once they get laundry done and clean the house, then there’s time for personal projects,” Leslie said. Her piece, ‘Van Gogh at age 14’ comes from a series of paintings she completed of people who are internationally known. “I was interested in expressing the young person before they reached that iconic level of world recognition,” Leslie said. She stumbled across photographs of Van Gogh as a teenager and was “fascinated” by the feel of them. “You can see something powerful in his expression,” she said. Leslie’s niece Aurora Kruk is also exhibiting a portrait in the show. Off Camera, created by Pat Chard, takes place annually and features members of Local 873 exhibiting a wide variety of work, from film to photography, sculpture and woodwork, among others. This year’s installment coincides with the Toronto International Film Festival. For further details, visit www. g1313.org

Children realize ballet dreams at special photo shoot Have your child photographed as a ballet dancer during a fantasy photo shoot Sept. 24 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Prantz Lifestyle Fashion Boutique, 2271 Bloor St. W., is providing the opportunity for kids, two to four years old, to come in and wear ballet
tutus or dance slippers while getting their photo taken. A boutique staff member, who is a former professional ballerina, will be judging who she thinks could most likely become a professional ballet dancer. It’s not about who’s the cutest, but about poise and posture
and presence. This is a fun opportunity for mom and daughters or sons who aren’t yet in school to do something special together while siblings are back to school. The winner will have his or her photo enlarged and mounted on the dancewear section of the store,
with parents’ written permission. Enter the photo to win a copy of the enlarged print and a $25 gift card to the store. Parents and children will receive a standard sized photo for free. There’s no charge to have the photo taken. Contact roslyn@prantzcanada.com for more details.
EVENT
Revue Cinema screens The Pinochet Case Chilean filmmaker to be in attendance Chilean documentary film director Patricio Guzmán Lozanes will attend a screening of his film The Pinochet Case at the Revue Cinema, Sunday, Sept. 13. The cultural association Casa Salvador Allende is screening the film to mark the 42nd anniversary of the 1939 coup. That year, a halfmillion Spanish refugees fled the Franco regime across the border into France, where they were held in a concentration camp. Chile was one of the countries that responded to their plight. The then-Chilean consul in France, later known as the eminent poet Pablo Neruda, arranged to have a ship transport as many people as could fit on board to Chile. The country’s health minister at the time, a young Salvador Allende, welcomed the 2,500 passengers when they landed. That support of people fleeing a repressive dictatorship is one reason a Spanish prosecutor and magistrate launched legal action in Spain and in London in a bid to hold former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet responsible for the political murders and torture that followed his 1973 overthrow of Allende’s elected socialist government. Their efforts are the subject of The Pinochet Case. The screening of The Pinochet Case will raise funds for Casa Salvador Allende’s scholarship fund. Guzmán, who is here for the Toronto International Film Festival, will be heading immediately to the airport after he speaks at the Revue. For that reason, the event starts at 3:45 p.m. sharp. Tickets are $10, available in advance at the Revue Cinema. The event starts at 3:45 p.m. Doors open between 3:15 and 3:30 p.m. The Revue is located at 400 Roncesvalles Ave. Email frameline@sympatico.ca for details.

oronto marks an important milestone Sunday with celebrations to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Toronto City Hall. The two half-circle towers, with the council chamber pod in the middle, that dominates Nathan Phillips Square is an iconic symbol of the city not just for residents but for people around the world. It’s one of the great things about Toronto that should make us proud. To celebrate this Sunday, there will be a free event from noon to 5 p.m. featuring entertainment by the Jordan John Band and a performance by STOMP dance competition finalists. Also taking the stage will be a group called the Clamshell Quintet, which is made up of four city councillors and a deputy city manager. Master builders from LEGO will be on hand to help residents build a replica of our view city hall and the surrounding area. Inside, there will be photoIt’s one of the graphs, architectural models and of the original furnishings great things some specifically designed for the buildabout Toronto ing. As was shown during this summer’s Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, the building and Nathan Phillips Square are an important gathering place for all residents. Whether it’s hosting special celebrations, New Year’s Eve parties, or serving as a nice place to sit and have lunch in the summer or go for a skate in the winter, the area is always busy and reflective of life in the city. It also serves as an historical reminder of pre-amalgamation Toronto as its formation coincided in many ways with the creation of Metropolitan Toronto in the late 1950s. An open competition was started in 1957 to design the new city hall, and the eventual winner was Finnish architect Viljo Revell. Ground was broken in 1961 by then City of Toronto mayor Nathan Phillips. It officially opened on Sept. 13, 1965. Along with celebrating a community gathering spot and a uniquely designed building, residents can also use this month to find out more about how Toronto City Hall came to be and how the city has developed over the past 50 years. Free lectures on that very subject are set for today and Sept. 24 in the council chambers starting at 7 p.m. For more on the celebrations, go to www.toronto.ca/ cityhall50th

Toronto council facing a busy few months
I
t has been a quiet summer at Toronto City Hall – the kind of quiet summers we’re going to have to get used to in the years after Rob Ford’s pyrotechnic mayoralty. If it weren’t for the pyrotechnics of the federal election, indeed, we might as well all have run off to cottages and patios for August and tried to get our head around city government again. Lucky for us – there’s every indication that this new fall legislative session will be much like the old session. Council will be finetuning, reviewing and in some cases re-debating issues that have already had their day in the sun in this latest term. There will be a refined design to the Gardiner ‘hybrid’ reconstruction, that council narrowly approved in concept earlier this year. In case anyone had wearied of Councillor Jim Karygiannis’ bloviations on the Uber ride sharing service during the Pan Am
david nickle the city Games, take heart: council will be looking at a regulatory regime that will bring the popular service under something resembling control. There will be a Scarborough subway debate, perhaps, along with a serious talk about Tory’s SmartTrack proposal that will for a span align almost directly with the new Scarborough subway. If I were to place odds, I would say it’s unlikely that council will move off course on either plan. But if you were done feeling unsteady about spending all that money on such a small piece of transit, you might want to break out the smelling salts this fall. There will be smaller fights too. Later this month, the allies of the Muzik nightclub at Exhibition Place will be squaring off to deal with the Toronto
and East York Community Council’s move this week to have city staff try and get the liquor license removed from the nightclub, in the wake of the deadly shootings there this summer. Add to that labour negotiations with the city’s unionized workers and a budget debate that will once again have to accommodate both Mayor Tory’s costly service improvement agendas and his imperative to keep tax increases at or below the rate of inflation – and it’s going to be a full agenda for the next few months. It is worth noting, again, what a recursive cycle we find ourselves living. It might not be a bad thing: government is a long game, and under a serious-minded regime it can become a trifle grinding. But grinding away often creates good, smooth things. Here’s hoping it’s so. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Reach him on Twitter: @DavidNickle

Dog parks are for pups, not picnickers To the editor: I have an issue with people using the leashfree area at dog parks for picnics. This, in itself, is not upsetting except that the dogs all congregate where the food is and often make nuisances of themselves. In addition, many of the picnickers, being kindhearted, will give food and bones to the dogs, not realizing that cooked bones (especially chicken bones) can splinter and cause severe internal damage in the digestive system. In some cases, dogs are on special diets and should not eat the bits they are offered. In my case, I prefer that mine not get into the habit of accepting food from strangers. It is a constant battle trying to get them away from the picnics and back to playing. Lucie Karpinec

Bloor West Village resident Louisa Sonosky says Shoppers Drug Mart’s OneWalk to Conquer Cancer benefitting the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is not for the faint of heart. Sonosky, 23, is participating in the event, a 25-kilometre walk Saturday, Sept. 12, through the streets of Toronto, in memory of her uncle Warren Evans, who died of lung cancer at the age of 60 last August. “He was like a dad to my brother and me, always there for us through thick and thin. He was a really good guy,” Sonosky told The Villager. Sonosky says her uncle is with her in spirit as she trains for the walk. “It’s been very therapeutic. He’s definitely with me every time I go out. “It helps me deal with the pain,” she said. Asked how her uncle would feel about her participation in

such an event, Sonosky said he’d be proud. “He always wanted to give back, to help people,” she said. Sonosky will be participating in the walk with two of her best friends as part of Wart’s Team. Their goal is to raise $1,500 each through the OneWalk campaign. Sonosky said she just found
out what the walk route will be. It starts at Polson Pier and continues up Bathurst Street, down to the Don Valley Parkway and ends back at Polson Pier. An estimated two in five Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetimes; one in four will die from it, according to OneWalk statistics. Funds raised through OneWalk will support personalized cancer medicine at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, which enables its clinicians and researchers to detect cancers earlier, diagnose with more precision, target treatment for each patient and support patients and their families. Taking part in the OneWalk to Conquer Cancer was one of the best decisions Sonosky has ever made, she said. “It’s definitely helped me deal with all the emotions. It’s hard, but it’s getting easier one day at a time.”

The Integrity Roof System
What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the

Green 13 proposes unique way to fund transit and cut back on greenhouse gases LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Local environmental group Green 13 is proposing an innovative way to fund transit infrastructure in the City of Toronto. The organization is hosting a presentation at Runnymede library next week during which its vice-chair Paul Mero will share the idea of using district-based ground source geothermal energy to generate sustainable funding for local transit. “We are proposing a royalty program in which the government leases access to geothermal resources to companies, who then could provide it to homeowners,” he said. The funds generated from the royalty program could go toward building transit infrastructure. This is generally what happens with the oil and gas industries in Canada, Mero said. “Although, the producing provinces spend the funds on their own priorities, in the end it would be up to the provincial government – which holds the rights to resources – to decide where the revenue is allocated,” Mero said. “Given they are local resources, we believe it makes sense to give the revenue to the cities where they are generated to fund local infrastructure priorities like transit.” Regardless of the weather conditions and season,
temperatures below ground remains fairly consistent year round. The ground is able to maintain a warmer and consistent temperature because it absorbs almost half of the sun’s heat as it hits the earth’s surface. Geothermal systems are able to tap into this energy to heat homes and offices with central heating and cooling. “Geothermal heating and cooling is the most efficient, yet not many people use it,” said Mero, citing as a society we depend too heavily on fossil fuels. “One of the systematic changes we need to make is a way that makes geothermal affordable for homeowners.” Questions asked This fall marks local environmental group Green 13’s fifth campaign alongside Project Neutral, an organization supporting Junction and area residents in their quest to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Of all the households that have participated over the past several years, 80 per cent have been able to reduce emissions by 20 per cent, reported Mero. Through its research, Green 13 questioned why the oil and gas industries have such strong government support and renewable energies “always seem to be under attack,” Mero said. “We realized that by put-

ting a value on non-renewable resources governments justified investing in them because they provided a longterm net benefit, pulled in large amounts of corporate investment and created lots of jobs. “By treating renewable resources like geothermal the same way, we believe the Ontario government can create a new source of revenue, increase investment in our cities and create local jobs. And, given that the resources are local it makes sense to reinvest them in local priorities like transit.” To find out more about the implications of using royaltybased programs as incentive for the province, cities, companies and residents to switch to geothermal for heating and cooling, take part in the discussion, Tuesday, Sept. 15 from 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. at the library, 2178 Bloor St. W. After the presentation, there will be a discussion about the opportunities and challenges of using geothermal energy as a large-scale sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.

Junction business leases out parking lot to ease congestion >>>from page 1 Potato, told west-end city councillors at Tuesday’s session of Etobicoke York Community Council (EYCC). “We decided we wanted to plant deeper roots here, because we love the Junction. This is where we started and this is where we want to stay. We want to make the Junction an even better place to live and prosper.” While many of Dorfman’s longtime customers came out to the Etobicoke Civic Centre Tuesday to speak out in support of The Sweet Potato’s relocation and expansion plans at 108 Vine Ave. – a long-vacant space that offers 1,670 square metres of area for retail and warehouse storage, as compared to the store’s current 817-square-metre location – his rezoning application was not without its controversy. Several nearby residents spoke out against the move, arguing that relocating the grocery store to a local street (the north side of which is zoned core employment, while the
south side is zoned residential) would bring too much traffic to the relatively quiet community surrounding Vine Avenue. “I’m mainly concerned about the noise and congestion that creating a grocery store in the midst of what right now is a mostly residential neighbourhood (will bring),” said Janet McKay, a Pacific Avenue resident and one of three locals who spoke out against the proposed relocation. “From my perspective, what’s going to happen is the strip of Pacific that I live on is going to become an extension of Dundas Street with a grocery store on the end of it – meaning a lot of traffic, a lot of noise, and just basically squeezing us out.” Those concerns, said ParkdaleHigh Park Councillor Sarah Doucette, were echoed by residents who attended two public meetings she has hosted to try to bring resolution to the issue and to explore traffic calming measures that might quell

some residents’ concerns. “Some of the options we’re looking at right now include perhaps changing the permit hours on the street for those residents who come

at the end of the day and can’t find a spot,” she said, noting that The Sweet Potato is also doing its part to help ease congestion concerns by leasing out a 70-spot parking lot at 162 Vine Ave. for use by its customers. Other accommodations The Sweet Potato has agreed to make in order to calm the worries of its new neighbours at the Vine Avenue location include: n the inclusion of “technology” to ensure that no shopping carts can leave the store and wind up clogging up the sidewalks; n agreeing upon a plan to ensure all exterior lights and signs be turned off in the evening when the store closes; n having employees help customers carry their shopping bags out to the off-site parking lot, which is located less than 100 metres away from the store; n agreeing to only accept deliveries to its front-of-store loading dock during regular business hours;
n and the inclusion of a new employee position in the store’s business plan, “whose sole responsibility will be to assist with deliveries.” “Not only with unloading, but also handling logistics to ensure that vehicles don’t idle, and that the streets stay safe and quiet,” Dorfman explained of the new position. “We did all this not only because we want our project to succeed, obviously, but also because we live here, we spend most of our time here, and we want to live alongside our neighbours.” The extra space afforded by the Vine Avenue location, Dorfman added, will also allow The Sweet Potato to expand its philanthropic endeavors, increase its number of employees to 75, and allow the store to open a community kitchen and launch a youth employment program. EYCC voted unanimously in favour of The Sweet Potato’s application for a zoning bylaw amendment.

KINGSWAY FACTS & HISTORY • Between 1906 and 1912, Robert Home Smith bought 3000 acres of land along the Humber River between Eglinton and Lake Ontario, which he developed into subdivisions such as Baby Point, Riverside Drive and Kingsway Park (now usually just called “The Kingsway”.) • The first two houses in The Kingsway were 43 and 47 The Kingsway, built in 1924 for Edward J. Cousins and Edward L. Cousins, father and son, respectively. • Between 1924 and 1947, 665 homes were built in The Kingsway. • The Kingsway was the first road paved in Etobicoke. • The Kingsway is wider than other roads in The Kingsway because Home Smith had planned to have an electric railway run down the centre of the street between Dundas and Bloor. • Royal York Road was named after the Royal York Golf Course, opened by a partnership between the Royal York Hotel and Robert Home Smith in 1929. That golf course was renamed St. George’s Golf and Country Club in 1946.

Toronto City Hall marks its 50th anniversary Sunday DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Over the past 50 years, Toronto City Hall has played many roles. It’s been in the background on not one but two Star Trek series; it’s been nuked as a stand-in for the zombie-infested Raccoon City in Resident Evil: Apocalypse; and in its strangest media turn, it was central to the internationally televised tragicomedy of former mayor Rob Ford’s term of office. But to begin with, the iconic structure of two curving towers clasping a council chamber that resembles nothing so much as a 1950s-era
flying saucer, had a simpler role: the futuristic and hopeful new seat of government for the old City of Toronto. It was something that Toronto’s civic leaders had meant to do since 1943, but in typical Toronto fashion, they dithered and equivocated for more than a decade until mayor Nathan Phillips took the reins and called for an international design competition. It wasn’t until September 1965 that the finished building – designed by Finnish architect Viljo Revell – opened its doors onto the civic square named after Phillips, as the new Toronto City Hall. This weekend, that new
city hall celebrates its 50th birthday, and it’s doing it in style. Mayor John Tory, who moved office into the building less than a year ago, remains struck by city hall’s iconic style. “From the standpoint of external recognition, it is one of our most iconic buildings,” he said. “Internally – I think while there are Johnnycome-latelies like YongeDundas Square, Mel Lastman Square – it’s the great public space. When we talk about a World Series or a Stanley Cup Parade – the terminus is Nathan Phillips Square. And it wouldn’t be much without
Dr. Janice Mummery • • • •
city hall behind it – because it’s both where we launch the fireworks, and it’s iconic.” The building is so iconic that it’s been a staple not just in movies and television, souvenirs and logos, but, in spite of its obvious challenges, it alone of all of the civic centres from the former Metropolitan Toronto municipalities was the obvious and only seat of government for the newly amalgamated City of Toronto. Scarborough East Councillor Ron Moeser was put in charge of managing the $4.8-million renovation that turned the council chambers from a space for 15 city coun-
cillors and a few city staff to one that would accommodate a council that was initially 57 members strong. In the end, the council chamber maintained its old-school charm – remembered well by councillors like Parkdale-High Park’s Gord Perks, who began his political life as an activist. “I have so many memories of being here. I can remember being 22 years old and holding an activist thing up in the council chamber. “I used to make deputations up there,” he said. “I can remember Citizens for Local Democracy holding meetings up there.”

TTC service improvements on tap With September in full swing, the TTC has finally unveiled the first round of $95 million in service improvements. Thirty-seven bus routes, many of them in suburban areas, will see an overall uptick in all-day service, restoring levels to what they were before sweeping budget cuts dating back to 2012. Thirty-nine bus and streetcar routes as well as subway service will now provide allday, frequent service. The Blue Night network that operates once the subway closes at 2 a.m. also has expanded service. The improvements could come at a cost to riders. It’s practically assured the TTC will hike transit fares for 2016 partially to off-set the added expense of running the new service. TO PROVIDE INSURANCE COVERAGE wUBER
As the city prepares to commence discussions on stricter regulations for rideshare providers, Uber announced this week it has signed a deal
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT with a Canadian insurance company to provide coverage for its drivers. While not much is known about the agreement, Intact Financial Corp will soon offer policies for Uber drivers under its belairdirect brand. The agreement also comes in advance of anticipated stricter regulations for rideshares which will likely come up for debate in city council over the coming months. Uber does cover passengers and drivers in certain situations for up to $5 million, but according to media reports, at least one former driver was planning to sue the company after his insurance claim was rejected following a major collision. HOSTS Sept. 16 ACCESSIBILITY FORUM wTTC
The TTC will hold its eighth annual forum for accessibility next week.
The event allows riders with accessibility issues to connect in public or oneon-one with TTC staff and senior executives, as well as members of the transit commission’s accessibility advisory committee. This year’s forum takes place Wednesday, Sept. 16 at the Allstream Centre inside the Exhibition Place grounds starting at 6 p.m. The TTC will operate an accessible shuttle bus service leaving Bathurst Station starting at 5 p.m. WEST LRT OPEN TO BIDS wFINCH
Metrolinx has issued a request for bidding on contracts related to the Finch West LRT construction project. The province’s transit planner issued a public notice for qualifications this week as a way to draw in private sector companies potentially interested in bidding for construction of the 18-stop line. King Street to close for TIFF red carpet and festival The Toronto International Film Festival is here and with it comes road closures. Beyond the usual red carpet hysteria, for the first four days of TIFF from Sept. 10 to 13, King Street between Peter and University streets will close to traffic and require the 504 King streetcar service to re-route. The result will be a Festival Street with safe and easy pedestrian access to theatres, as well as street-side patios set up for the occasion, organizers said. During the closure, the 504 service will split into east and west routes between Broadview and Dundas West stations, and will not service any stops on King between York and Bathurst streets, which instead will have replacement buses. Late night 504 service will re-route to Queen Street. TTC and city officials are promising as minimal

a disruption as is possible during the four days of closures compared to last year when diverting the King service during TIFF led to unanticipated congestion for the 501 Queen streetcar route. TIFF also agreed to pay and distribute notices of the
changes to King Street residents and local business well ahead of the festival. In a note to constituents detailing the changes, Trinity-Spadina city councillor Joe Cressy suggested alternate options for road closures during next year’s TIFF may be considered.

The City ofToronto is carrying out aTransportation Master Plan (TMP) identifying area-wide infrastructure improvements to address traffic congestion on the section of St. Clair Avenue West between Keele Street and Old Weston Road. This study builds on the 2015 St Clair Avenue West Underpass Study which identified potential improvements in relation to the Kitchener rail corridor such as: • Extending Gunns Road east • Widening St. Clair Avenue West • Extending Davenport Road west • Extending Keele Street south to Davenport Road
What is a Master Plan
It is a study that examines the infrastructure needs (e.g., roads, bridges, storms sewers) within a geographic area and provides a framework for the implementation of the recommended projects over a period of time. ATMP will be completed to evaluate and select infrastructure improvements and outline an implementation strategy.TheTMP will document all four phases of the Schedule C Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process. This includes the opportunity for public input.

>>>from page 1 placed from Eastern Europe – many of whom were children. The film, a decade-long endeavor for Sushko, will be screened as part of this year’s installment of the Bloor West Village Toronto Ukrainian Festival’s annual Film Day, Saturday, Sept. 19. “My father was the first Canadian member (of the chorus),” Sushko told The Villager. “I learned of his story, his musical journey through the war, how he met the group and how he was recruited by the group on their first crosscountry tour.” His father Makar met the chorus in Ukraine during the Second World War and again in post-war Germany in the displaced persons camps, comprised of refugees. There, he performed in a joint concert with the Bandurist Chorus in Munich in 1948. The musical director of the chorus, Hryhory Kyrasty, whom Sushko features in the film, invited his father to join the group as they were leaving for America. “My father had already set a course for immigration to Canada. Upon arrival in Toronto in 1949, he received another request from Hryhory to join the group for their first tour across Canada in 19491950,” Sushko said. “He became the first Canadian member. This included two sold out concerts at Massey Hall in Toronto.” Sushko joined the chorus in 2003 as a member, filling in for his father, who passed away while his son was on musical tour with the group in Europe that year. While his father was his biggest inspiration, it helped too that Sushko knew one of the survivors of the chorus. He happened to be Sushko’s onetime music teacher. Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, a bandura craftsman and honorary patron of the chorus, Sushko felt he shouldn’t miss the opportunity to tell this story. Key to putting its pieces together, Sushko approached the survivors. “I was fortunate that they were willing to tell their stories on film,” he recalled. He travelled to Ukraine to film a geographical retrace across the country of the early chorus.
Above, Bloor West Village resident Orest Sushko spent 10 years creating a documentary film about Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus. It's the story of the original 17 members of the chorus who survived the Second World War as a musical ensemble. Pictured is Sushko, left, with two of the chorus' survivors Mykola Liskiwsky (middle) and Petro Kytasty. Right, poster of the film. Courtesy photos
“Music of Survival is a testament to the enduring power of art and the human spirit, even in the face of the greatest of horrors,” said Jesse Wente, director of Film Programmes at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, in a statement. “Its music uplifts, informs and indeed transforms the spirit and the mind, shedding much-needed light on a story of cultural survival that resonates even more deeply today.” Through performing at the Bloor West Canadian Ukrainian Festival, Sushko got to know the organizers, who were aware of the film and had seen it at the TFF Bell Lightbox Theatre. Music of Survival: The Story of the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus, narrated by Canadian
actor Colm Feore, will be screened as part of Film Day at the festival at the Runnymede library, 2178 Bloor St. W. which runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Featured this year, along with talks fromdirectors and a live performance, are the documentaries Pride of Ukraine: A Documentary of Hope and Inspiration; and the animatedshort My Baba’s Kitchen. Also screening is a rarelyseen, full-length feature film from 1938. Visit www.ukrainianfestival. com/filmfest.htm for the full schedule. To find out more, visit musicofsurvival.com .
