Longtime friend and neighbour Mary Neumann will remember Catherine – or as she knew her – “Kit” Currie as “a really warm, beautiful person.” A massive search by family, friends and volunteers led to the discovery of Currie’s bike and then human remains nearby in the area of Mount Pleasant and Rosedale Valley roads, Friday, Sept. 5. Police did not make an identification until Saturday, according to Neumann. Currie took her own life, she said. Neumann told The Villager she takes comfort in the memories she had with her fellow Dufferin Grove-area resident. “I feel like her warmth is with me,” Neumann said. “It’s very sad. We didn’t know she was depressed or likely to do something like this. It is so extremely sad. She was someone who was such a wonderful person, so warm. She touched a lot of people, she was so open,” >>>MEMORIAL, page 8

Revue Cinema nets $125k Ukrainian and Polish Trillium grant for renos heritage to be celebrated in the west end this weekend

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

The Revue Cinema is the recipient of an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant that will enable its operators to embark on a renovation project to revamp the century-old theatre. The not-for-profit Revue Film Society was granted $125,300, its chair Mark Ellwood told The Villager in advance of an official announcement that will take place at the annual Roncesvalles Village Polish Festival, Saturday, Sept. 13. “We’re really grateful to the Trillium foundation for its support of our community program,” Ellwood said. “We’re grateful for the community. You’ve shown this is a viable enterprise.” The society has tallied a list of improvements it plans

to make to the theatre’s interior. This includes boosting the stage and lobby lighting, rebuilding the theatre doors, replacing the auditorium floors, improving the washrooms, revamping the concession stand and outside ticket booth. The goal is to “improve the customer experience,” Ellwood said. “Everyone’s buoyed by (the grant),” he said. “(Patrons) will walk in and say, ‘Wow, this looks and feels different.’” It is not yet known if the theatre will have to close and if so, for how long, to complete the renovations. The aim is to start work in November and finish in April of next year. The society is in the midst of lining up volunteers to help with the work. “We want to engage the community to contribute.

That allows our dollars to go farther,” Ellwood said. In recent years, the society has made “Band-Aid” fixes, Ellwood said. “We thought, let’s do it all at the same time,” he said. It is the Revue Film Society’s mission to engage the community even more so than it already does with its new programming committee. To find out more, visit revuecinema.ca The Revue Cinema announcement will take place at the Polish Festival, Saturday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. on the stage just north of Marmaduke Street. This announcement precedes the official ceremonies that occur later on at 5 p.m. farther south on Roncesvalles Avenue.

et this be a municipal election campaign about ideas: not just the sharing of ideas but also how they can get implemented. Ideas on how our neighbourhoods can grow and evolve. Ideas on how our residents can become more engaged. Ideas on how our citizens can work together. By tomorrow afternoon, the final candidate list for Toronto’s mayor, councillors and school board trustees will be set. And we need to see what our candidates have to offer. But in addition to concrete proposals for their respective communities, candidates must offer how they intend to work with others – the citizens they’ll be representing as well their our view political colleagues. When it comes to representYour municipal ing constituents, it is possible earn respect – and ulticandidates must to mately build consensus – from earn their votes a wide range of viewpoints. That comes from being professional, from being diligent and by listening to all stakeholders. When it comes to working with political colleagues, Toronto council is made up of 45 elected representatives. The Toronto District School Board has 23. The Toronto Catholic District School Board has 13. An individual running for office is ultimately just one voice at the table. Even someone with the power and resources of the mayor’s office can have their vision sidelined – and we did witness that in this most recent term of council. Toronto has a lot of diverse (and sometimes competing) interests. Being able to connect with a diverse group of stakeholders on a myriad of issues – especially on those where a fundamental disagreement exists – is not an easy task, but it is a necessary one. To the candidates: Be prepared to offer your vision. Be prepared to back it up with facts and observations. But be prepared to explain a more challenging question: How would you work with your constituents and elected colleagues to push that vision forward? To Toronto’s voters: Inform yourselves on the issues that matter in your respective communities. Respect your vote – and make the candidates earn it. Ford, Tory lacking in transit planning

I

never pegged Rob Ford and John Tory as the kind of kids who played a lot of Dungeons and Dragons in high school. Tory is bit old and suave to have gotten into the über-nerdy ‘80s role-playing game, and the only set of polyhedron dice kids like the Ford brothers would have had was the one they’d swiped from the cowering members of the Scarlett Heights D&D Club. Still, as a recovering Dungeons-and-Dragons über-nerd myself, I’ve got to say: both Ford and Tory would have made wicked Dungeon Masters. Armed with nothing but graph paper, some pencils and their unbridled imagination, both have come up with wonderful, fanciful maps that’ll keep parties of dungeon-crawlers busy for months – or, if they’re elected, years. Of the two transit dungeons, Ford’s is undeniably cooler. He’s drawn a veritable minotaur’s maze

david nickle the city of subway lines on his $9-billion plan to drive Torontonians underground: tunnels under Finch and Sheppard Avenues in Etobicoke and Scarborough, a dank catacomb for the Eglinton Crosstown light rail line in Scarborough, and a downtown relief passageway beneath Leslieville and Corktown. Although Ford hasn’t marked them on the map he sent out last week, one might expect a more than a few pit traps along that one. Tory’s plan is not technically a transit dungeon – Smart Track is all above ground – but the serpentine rail line wending through Scarborough, downtown Toronto and, if you listen to Olivia Chow, some living rooms in Etobicoke, is certainly sitting on a dragon’shorde of gold.

Tory would have been the kind of Dungeon Master that made it easy for his players, letting them wander from level to level picking off under-fed goblins and picking up chests-full of gold and magic swords and rings as they went – ultimately, becoming a very popular Dungeon Master indeed. It’s all great fun sitting around a table rolling dice, fighting through imaginary dungeons and counting up fanciful gold. The trouble is that both Tory and Ford’s transit plans are asking voters to roll dice on very real schemes; schemes that are going to cost real money and plough through real neighborhoods. The plans are probably a step up from the labyrinths that teenage gamers sketch out after they’ve done their homework, but they are nearly as tentative. This week, when Chow called Tory on the physical impossibility of laying track along the route he sketched

through Etobicoke, Tory admitted that yes, he would dig a tunnel for that portion of his surface subway after all. And neither he nor Ford have provided much comfort in their financing plans – both relying on the unproven tax increment financing model to pay the very significant cost of those projects, and Ford floating a further range of financing mechanisms that a team of experts spent considerable energy definitively refuting during the Sheppard subway debate this past term. Really, that shouldn’t surprise anyone. This kind of thing has always played much better over a long night in a suburban basement rec room than it does in the real world. Any übernerd could tell you that. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Reach him on Twitter: @DavidNickle

Pitch in on annual cleanup of the Humber River this coming Monday Veteran firefighter, avid kayaker and founder of l o c a l r u b b i s h re m ov a l company 1-800-RID-OF-IT Rick Crawford will host the fourth annual Humber River cleanup, Monday, Sept. 15. Similar to previous years, Crawford is calling for cleanup crew volunteers to step up to help preserve the river. The annual clean up has turned up all kinds of treasures, including a provincial historical plaque marking a trade post founded by Jean Baptiste Rousseaux (17581812) who, according to a provincial history website, was the first European to settle in the Toronto area. Crews have cleaned the river bed of tonnes of garbage, including rusted shopping carts, bottles and unidentifiable objects. “Pollution is not just impacting the delicate Humber River ecosystem, but is literally burying our history,” said Crawford, a Junction-area resident, in a

statement. “As a local kayaker, I can’t believe the things that have ended up in the Humber River and around the shoreline. It’s a beautiful part of the city, but it really needed someone to step in and help clean it up.”

Volunteers are asked to meet at the parking lot, just south of the Petro Canada gas station and car wash, north of the Queensway, off of South Kingsway. The cleanup takes place 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Memorial event to take place on Toronto Islands >>>from page 1 Neumann said. The Currie family released statements on the Help Find Kit Currie Facebook page and the FindKitCurrie website, that indicate she was found dead – despite official confirmation yet from police. “ We have found our beloved Kit,” reads the message posted on Saturday,

Sept. 6. “The Currie/Brown family requests privacy at this time to make arrangements for her service. We are extremely grateful to all of you who helped us find her, she was well loved. In remembrance of Kit our family has decided to support the (Search and Rescue Dogs) of Ontario, and the Canadian Alliance

on Mental Health and Mental Illness.” Neumman said she hopes people will donate to the Canadian Alliance on Mental Health and Mental Illness in Currie’s name. Neumann and Currie’s family members said they were impressed by the outpouring of support and their rallying efforts to locate

Currie. “I think it would have touched her amazingly,” said Neumann of her friend, whom she initially thought had gone to visit her parents in Ottawa. Currie had told Neumann she had always hoped to move back there where her parents had property in the country. “She felt extremely

attracted to that land,” said Neumann, adding Currie was a “total nature lover,” who had an “absolutely beautiful garden.” The one-time student of OCAD University, Currie was a sculptor.

Winner of award will be announced at October event >>>from page 1 fiction book, The Stop: How the Fight for Good Food Transformed a Community and Inspired a Movement, published by Random House Canada. The Toronto Book Awards honour authors of books of literary or artistic merit that are evocative of Toronto. What these local finalists share is a love for Toronto. When asked how it feels to be recognized, De Sa called it an honour. “I love this city. The idea that Kicking the Sky is recognized as a book of literary or artistic merit that is evocative of this city I still call home, makes me very happy,” he said. “Having my book, something I worked very hard to ‘get right’, named a finalist... validates all of my hard work: the many hours scouring newspapers, databases, and magazine articles; the interviews with family and friends

and some of Toronto’s vibrant communities; the countless wanderings through the magical alleys that connect this city in a very special way. It goes much deeper than the desire to be recognized or singled out.” Leung says she couldn’t be more honoured to be recognized alongside “this stellar group of writers.” “I love how each book offers a different flavour, layer and perspective on the city and reflect the richness of Toronto’s people and it’s past, present and future,” she said. Curtis and Saul said “they’re delighted” to be recognized as part of the shortlist by a city they both adore. “We hope that it means more people in Toronto will read the book and hear not only about the continuing struggles and triumphs of low-income people in this city, but also about the inno-

vative approach to hunger and poverty pioneered here and now being spread across the country through Community Food Centres Canada (www. cfccanada.ca),” they said in an email to The Villager. “If the Toronto Book Awards bring greater attention to the resilience and hopefulness of the people whose story it tells, as well as the potential for communities to create real change when they come together to grow, cook, share and advocate for good food, we’d be really happy.” Each finalist will receive $1,000 and the winning author receives $10,000. The winner will be announced, Thursday, Oct. 16 at the Toronto Reference Library’s Bram and Bluma Appel Salon. Members of the public are encouraged to come out and celebrate.

High Park’s ‘bird man’ dies after short illness LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com It was only a short time ago that family and close friends gathered in Ben Holloway’s favourite spot in High Park to celebrate his 79th birthday with him. Early last month, people who knew Holloway best feted him in a tiny piece of High Park unofficially nicknamed the bird sanctuary. Just over a month later, on Thursday, Sept. 4, the sanctuary lost its founder, affectionately known as Ben “The Bird Man.” He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after a brief illness. He leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Pheobe, six children, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. His friend Bruno Venir, who had known Holloway for 25 years, had just been to visit the bird sanctuary, Tuesday, Sept. 9, where he had helped his friend tend to the birds – as well as squirrels

Love from his Family. “He used to sit here all day,” recalled friend and local High Park photographer David Allen, who has snapped many pictures of the man. “He’d go to the (Grenadier) restaurant every morning. He’d have tales to tell – he’d tell you about his grandkids in his east coast accent.” It didn’t matter that

Holloway lived in Toronto’s east end. He’d make the trek westward by TTC Wheel-Trans or by taxi, said High Park volunteer Robin Sorys. “It’s so magical,” she said as she stood inside the sanctuary. A variety of birds visit the place on a regular basis, including yellow finches, cardinals, blue birds, doves

Tory will comply with rules over his $6M Rogers shares if elected mayor DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Mayoral candidate John Tory says he’ll let rules and precedent decide what he does with $6 million in Rogers shares he owns, should he be elected Mayor of Toronto. “First of all I will follow all of the rules whatever they may be,” said Tory, in response to a call from his opponent Olivia Chow to put all of his Rogers shares in a blind trust following a successful mayoral bid. “I’m interested she’s already getting me sworn in,” he said. “But I’ll comply with whatever the rules are...and I guess we’ll have to look at precedent to see what other people have done. But I’m sure I’m not the first person who came into the mayor’s office who had some investments.” Chow initially called on

Tory and Mayor Rob Ford to put their private-sector interests into a blind trust at last Thursday’s Toronto Region Board of Trade debate. At the time, Tory explained that he didn’t own Rogers, but wishes he did. On Sept. 8, Chow pointed out that Tory might not own Rogers outright, but he sits

on the board and owns $6 million in Rogers stocks. “He owns many shares of Rogers – $6 million worth. Will he put his shares into a blind trust? I believe integrity is important, there has to be a very clear division from what you can gain versus what you are as a public servant.” Chow issued the challenge the day that the Globe and Mail published an account of newly released documents, indicating that Mayor Ford had exerted his influence as mayor in 2012 to try and have city staff expropriate land owned by Suncor, to help the owner of Apollo Health and Beauty add parking to a new factory on Finch Avenue West. Apollo is a client of the Ford family’s label-making business Deco. Ford told reporters Monday that he “didn’t expropriate land” and said that Deco had not benefited “one iota” from

Soknacki drops out of Toronto mayor’s race David Soknacki has left the mayoral race. The former Scarborough councillor and budget chief made the announcement Tuesday evening after speaking with supporters. Consistently polling in the single digits, Soknacki said in his statement that he simply hadn’t the support or momentum to continue. “Ours has been one of the most positive, the most ideadriven and the most idealistic

any business the Ford family had done as elected representatives. “When someone calls me, I don’t ask: ‘Do we do business with you,? (then) I’m not going to help you,” said Ford. “I’ll sit down with any business person, any time.” Ford said he brings city staff to every meeting he attends, and said all he did with regard to Apollo was to encourage the company to “create jobs in the city. I am the person who creates jobs.” Both Tory and Chow said they believed the mayor behaved inappropriately if not illegally on advocating on behalf of Apollo. David Soknacki said that he hadn’t read the article and wouldn’t comment until he had.

Toronto mayoral campaigns in recent memory,” wrote Soknacki. “However, today, I received confirmation of what I suspected for days: while my support is growing, it simply is not growing quickly enough to make any positive difference to the outcome on Election Day, especially given the challenges I’ve faced as a candidate.” The three significant mayoral candidates are John Tory, Olivia Chow and Rob Ford.

Bailão facing challengers to Ward 18 council seat Affordable childcare, affordable housing and improving transit options are issues in the riding HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com With more than 44,900 people, Ward 18 Davenport is one ward to watch in this year’s 2014 municipal election. The ward’s current councillor, Ana Bailão, has been leading the charge for the past four years and will battle it out with a set of new candidates this year. Out of the 11 registered candidates so far, ten are candidates who didn’t run in the 2010 municipal elections making them new council hopefuls. But Bailão isn’t focusing too much attention on that detail. She began her campaign to stay in office months ago and has decided to approach this election differently. “In the last couple of months in June and July we’ve done a series of neighbourhood planning sessions and I had over 200 residents participate,” Bailão said. “We went over

some of the stuff we’ve done over the past four years and some of the key projects the community wants to focus on.” Bailão says she and her team have gotten close with the community and really listened to their needs and wants to make this campaign not just about her, but the community as well. “One of the things I will continue to focus on is the kind of councillor the community wants and it was very clear to me, from the last election, that community engagement, having a councillor that was knowledgeable about the community and was responsive and respecting of the community, is what they want,” said Bailão. One of the candidates looking to shake things up is firsttime runner Alex Mazer. A former policy director to the Ontario Minister of Finance for four years, Mazer is hoping

Davenport is a pie shaped ward bordered by the railway tracks, Queen Street and Dovercourt Road.

to bring a fresh perspective to city hall, if elected. “It’s an amazing opportunity to bring new positive and progressive leadership to city hall,” Mazer said. “Because so many people are paying attention because of the dysfunction, mismanagement

and lost opportunities at city hall, we now have a chance to make a difference. And that not only requires a new mayor, but a new generation of city councillors.” He added Ward 18 needs strong leadership and the area, in his opinion, isn’t getting that from its current councillor. “When I meet people at the door they respond really well to the fact that I’m a new candidate. I think the desire for change is really strong,” he said. If elected he aims to maximize the potential of the West Toronto Railpath and improving transit options through cycling, improving pedestrian streetscapes and having the railpath connect with the rest of the downtown. Another council hopeful is Jolene Hunt, a candidate who plans to represent the younger voters in the ward. It’s a demographic that’s been overlooked with the

incumbent, she said. “If you’ve been in politics for a while and you’re in a certain demographic it’s easy to lose touch with what the day to day people are going through,” Hunt said. She plans to listen and fight for the young people in the ward in their late 20s and early 30s, whom she says feel they’ve been left out of the political landscape because they don’t make a certain amount of money. According to the 2011 Canadian household survey for Ward 18 Davenport conducted by Statistics Canada, 54 per cent, 10,300 people, are renting at the average price of $978 a month. The average price of a home in the area is around $600,000. The survey also showed 23.2 per cent of people 25 years of age and older are still living at home, compared to the Toronto wide 17.9 per cent. Ac c o rd i n g t o Ba i l ã o

164,000 people live in Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) in the city. She added the backlog of repairs, costing around $862 million, at TCHC and the long waiting list needs to be addressed. The high possibility of the list growing as the years go by as the population begins to age and become more dependent on fixed income is a quickly approaching reality. The Ontario Non-Profit Housing Association released its annual waiting list survey last year and it showed about 72,700 households in Toronto were waiting for affordable homes as of December 2012 with an average waiting time of five years in Toronto. The fight for a seat at city hall to represent Davenport is still anyone’s race and voters will decide on Oct. 27 who they want to represent them.

West-end residents get update on rail safety at public meeting Politicans want better regulations to prevent derailment similar to Lac-Mégantic in Toronto LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com A train derailment the magnitude of the fatal Lac-Mégantic crash that killed 47 people and destroyed half of the eastern Quebec town’s buildings was an “aberration,” a Canadian Pacific (CP) Railway spokesperson told those who attended a community meeting to discuss rail safety. Since the tragedy in July 2013, when an unattended freight train carrying crude oil came off the track and exploded in the popular tourist destination, the rail industry has been pro-actively reviewing its safety management system, CP’s Randy Marsh, director of government affairs, told the two dozen or so residents who attended the meeting hosted by Parkdale-High Park MP Peggy Nash last week. “If we don’t operate safely, we don’t have a successful rail company,” Marsh said. “We’re reviewing all our procedures. We’re working with all of our stakeholders to improve what we do.” While Marsh said the federal government acted quickly following the Lac-Mégantic disaster to ensure the factors that led to the accident wouldn’t happen again, Nash, along with colleague York South-Weston MP Mike Sullivan, a member of the House of Commons Transport Committee, and Christine Collins,

president of the union representing rail inspectors are calling on further urgent action to improve rail safety. This is in part because Nash’s riding sits in close proximity to several of the busiest cross-country rail lines in Canada. On behalf of her constituents who have articulated their concern for the types of dangerous materials being transported along the rail corridor in their neighbourhood, Nash has written several letters to the Minister of Transport Lisa Raitt. “There is more freight traffic than there has been in the past. Are we taking every safety precaution,” Nash said. The local politician said she presented a petition in the House of Commons in an effort to get answers on behalf of the community. Since the Lac-Mégantic crash, Transport Canada has phased out the most dangerous of tank cars, DOT-111, the least crash-resistant, as recommended by the Transportation Safety Board, Nash said. It has also required Emergency Response Assistance Plans (ERAP) for the transportation of crude oil, gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel and ethanol. Nash invited Transport Canada representatives to attend the meeting, but they did not. “There is a robust regulatory system in place. We have to do risk

assessments regularly by law,” said Marsh, adding CP is a leader in rail safety. Collins, the national president of the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees, said the organization is calling for an online searchable database of incidents for the public. Sullivan said the House of Commons Transport Committee has asked for a study of the transportation of dangerous goods because there is not a lot known about the shipment of crude oil, which has led to four derailments recently. “How do we make this stop happening? It’s only a matter of time before it happens again,” Sullivan said. When asked by residents if CP could re-route its trains to avoid travelling through densely populated areas, like Toronto, Marsh said this question is one he hears often. He called this a NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) issue. “All our rail routes that go across the country go right through Toronto,” he said. The City of Toronto has an Office of Emergency Management whose website provides tips on how to be prepared for different kinds of emergency.

LRT tunnel dig nears Dufferin Tunnel borer machines (TBMs) excavating the west underground portion of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT have nearly reached Dufferin Street. About 2.5 kilometres of tunnelling is complete since last spring, with both “Dennis” and “Lea” digging underneath Eglinton Avenue West. They are expected to reach Allen Road by December, according to Metrolinx. The two massive drilling machines have continued to carve out the Crosstown’s underground route, departing from Black Creek Drive last spring. Once the machines reach the Allen, they will be extracted and redeployed east to Yonge Street. All tunnelling is expected to be done by late 2016 after which station construction can begin. UP Express: Airport workers want meeting over fares RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Airport workers are demanding a face-to-face meeting with Metrolinx officials to discuss their concerns over the affordability of the Union Pearson (UP) Express air rail link. Around 10 members of a loose coalition of flight attendants, customer service representatives and baggage handlers working out of Pearson International Airport turned up last Friday at Metrolinx’s head offices inside Union Station, thinking they would get to voice their concerns directly to the provincial transit’s agency’s board of directors on charging a premium fare for UP, which opens next spring. But the public portion of Metrolinx board meetings don’t allow for deputations. Chair Rob Prichard suggested any concerns on UP’s future

affordability could be emailed to him directly. That’s just not good enough, said the workers who want an immediate public consultation with the entire membership. “Twenty-thousand workers and there hasn’t been one discussion with any of us,” said Sean Smith, a union organizer with Unifor local 2002, which represents Pearson airport employees as well as flight personnel working for airlines like Air Transat and Air Canada. “We’ve just heard the train is not for you, well it’s our tax dollars they used to put it there.” Several workers, who made their comments within earshot of senior Metrolinx executives, said there is general support for UP among the airport workforce, even though the service is expected to operate as a premium express rail service, making

just two stops at Weston and Bloor GO stations, between Terminal One of Pearson and Union Station.

Riding the length of the four-stop service which travels from Pearson via a new rail track linking up with the exist-

ing Georgetown South tracks will take only 25 minutes, promises Metrolinx, making it ideal for business-class commuters looking to travel in speed as well as luxury. For Ole Harder getting to the airport in under 30 minutes would be a dream. The Air Canada flight attendant said he spends at least 90 minutes getting from Richmond and Sherbourne streets to the airport, a journey which requires streetcar, subway and bus trips. Harder, who said he would happily take the service regularly if the fares were reasonable, was frustrated by what he sees as a lack of public dialogue on the matter. “There’s no public consultation, and we’re being told it’s a boutique service for businessmen, which was never intended for us,” said Harder. “They’re making back-and-forth impossible and excluding the public from

participation.” In a statement, Metrolinx spokesperson Malon Edwards said there’s a willingness on the part of the provincial transit planning agency to discuss the matter with the airport workers – if an official meeting request is made. “We’re committed to meeting with the Pearson Airport workers who attended last week’s board meeting, and we look forward to their formal request,” said Edwards. Edwards also said alternative pricing for UP fares was under discussion, including having “variable price points” for families and frequent riders. Also under consideration was charging riders who board from either Weston or Bloor a distance-based fare as is used by GO Transit. “We are working hard to ensure we develop a sustainable business plan that meets the needs of as many people as possible,” he said.
