Polish fest grows to include changing face of community Celebration kicks off Friday night with Polka Party ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Pierogies and pickles will still be on order, but according to the organizer of the Roncesvalles Polish Festival, there is food and music lined up this year to keep the long-running festival fresh. “People will be able to see that we are trying to keep the programming interesting, but we certainly aren’t abandoning our roots,” said Tony Cauch, longtime chair of the Roncesvalles Village Business Improvement Area (BIA), the organization that mounts the annual Polish festival. “If you rest on your laurels, you run the risk of losing your target audience.” The neighbourhood is evolving, but Roncesvalles is known as the cradle of the Polish Diaspora, and Cauch said the festival will always harken back to that and give people a taste of the history. “The Polish flavour in the neighbourhood is palpable, it is definitely still there, but it isn’t as prevalent as it was 15 years ago,” Cauch said. The changing streetscape will be reflected in the food offerings, and Cauch said organizers are looking to provide a little more breadth of Polish and local music. “We want to give people a taste of Polish culture, but not at the expense of other cultures that have populated Roncesvalles Village over the years,” Cauch said. “It is really a true community festival.” Cauch said it is important the Roncesvalles Polish Festival champion the diversity that exists in Toronto, as well as the area’s Polish history. “You will certainly get lots of tastes of Polish cuisine,” Cauch said. “We are also completely inclusive and

usinesses in Toronto – big and small – help make our city the economic force it is. They create jobs, they pay taxes and they provide services and create products we need.

We’d suggest there’s another goal local businesses should make a top priority: to give back to the community they serve. Business owners and their employees are part of our neighbourhoods just as much as anyone else – in fact, they hold a position of influence that should be used to set an example by spreading goodwill. In recent editions we’ve helped share the stories of some businesses already leading the way. Bloor West entrepreneur and 1-800-RID-OF-IT President Rick Crawford rolled up his sleeves this week to help clean garbage from the Humber River. He saw a need and made use of his expertise – providing the trucks, staff and equipment from his national rubbish removal comour view pany to clean one of our city’s waterways. Etobicoke-based ShredEX Paying it recently held a charity paper forward helps shredding event where compawere invited to pay a nomicommunities nies nal fee to shred papers and the proceeds all went to a local crisis centre. And in Scarborough, Rouge Valley Mitsubishi held a charity test drive event and raised more than $1,200 for the East Scarborough Boys and Girls Club. There are plenty of non-profits and local community groups in need of help. Encourage employees to participate in one of the many charity walks that take place throughout the year. Or form a company team and pitch in on a Habitat for Humanity build. Doing this can be a win for everyone – for the community, but also as a team-building exercise and a way to instill pride in the company and confidence in its mandate. Even adding a charity element to a new office opening or anniversary can make a difference. North York’s Royal LePage Partners celebrated its 100th birthday this year with a barbecue and fundraiser for the North York Women’s Shelter. It’s the completely selfless actions that inspire further good works. As the backbone of our communities, businesses should use that leverage to support the people around them. If your business is going above and beyond, let us help spread that good influence. Contact our newsroom at contactus@insidetoronto.com with details about what you’re doing and we may consider it for a future news story.

Good journalism essential to democracy

G

iven the hearings, trials and appeals that Mayor Rob Ford has gone through over the past three years, it’s hard to imagine a lower-stakes game than the Ontario Press Council hearings that took place Monday. If the Globe and Mail and Toronto Star are found to have behaved unethically in pursuing stories about the mayor and his brother Doug, they’ll have to publish the scolding decisions in full. No one’s talking about throwing them out of their newspaper boxes. But wouldn’t you know it? Out of the second half of the hearing came one of the most cogent – and dispiriting – statements of the health of our body politic to come along in years. Specifically, it came from complainant Connie Harrison, who objected to

david nickle the city the Globe and Mail’s story alleging Doug Ford once ran a hashish distribution business in central Etobicoke. She, however, demands more than the Globe has been able to provide, being as none of the sources who spoke about the alleged Ford hashish business were willing to be identified. Assurances from editors and reporters that the sources had been vetted, and their fears of the consequences of revealing their names were real, didn’t wash with Harrison. The Globe should have betrayed its sources, submitted its reporter’s notes to a third party, or failing that, simply ask for its reporter’s resignation. Bottom line: whatever credibility the Globe had

managed to earn over the decades reporting and publishing the news of the day didn’t count to her. By reporting as much of the story that it thought it could without squaring the circle with unwillingly named sources, the Globe and Mail did only harm to the city. Now, we journalists have never enjoyed the love we feel we deserve from the public, and Harrison’s opinions and feelings are her own. But they are not only her own, in this divided city. The mayor and his brother take pains to paint their critics in the media as partisan liars, whose freedomof-information requests are signs of impertinence rather than diligence. Is that narrative taking hold? Not overall, hopefully. The accountability provided by good journalism is, as was stated by

both Globe editor John Stackhouse and earlier in the day by Toronto Star editor-in-chief Michael Cooke, essential to the functioning of a healthy democracy. It’s also fragile. Reporters and editors cannot compel testimony or proceed with criminal charges if they believe they’re warranted. They can’t use wiretaps. They can’t enter premises. They cannot, always, deliver 100 per cent of an important story as fast as their readers might wish. With all its imperfections, however, good reporting sheds light on matters that the public should know about, and that’s a vital function – even if sometimes that light isn’t as bright or constant as some of us might wish.

A funny thing happens when you tell kids they matter. They believe you. An alarming 40,000 kids drop out of high school every year. Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada are committed to changing that. They provide a safe and supportive place where kids can develop confidence and life skills. They offer programs like Rogers Raising the Grade to help kids with their studies. The Club is a place where kids can drop in, so they’re less likely to drop out. TM

p e S Service levels to Torontonians revealed T Toronto council’s standing committees start meeting this week and those meetings could be very significant as far as city service levels are concerned. That’s because city manager Joe Pennachetti and his staff are reporting on the results of a city-wide service level review, to each of the city’s standing committees. And that’s where it gets interesting, according to Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks. “At those meetings I intend to move motions to improve the public service the city gets,” Perks said.

STAFFING IN BUILDING DEPARTMENT wIMPROVING

The first service review occurred at the city’s government management committee. Next up will be the planning and growth management committee meeting on Thursday. Staff is noting the city needs to improve staffing levels in the city’s building

FERRY SERVICE NEEDS REPLACEMENT On Monday, Sept. 16, the parks and environment committee will be looking at its own service review. Staff there has noted the ferry service to the Toronto islands needs replacement, and that both an increase in population and in severe weather means the city will have to step up service and maintenance. At the same time, the department is looking at reducing turf maintenance crews and standards.

Councillors deny application to chop down healthy tree >>>from page 1 who was not present at Tuesday’s EYCC meeting, requested to bring the tree down due to concerns associated with the damage caused by falling branches, ParkdaleHigh Park Councillor Sarah Doucette argued those fears were unfounded. “When someone comes to us and says ‘I want to take down a healthy tree’ for whatever reason, the answer is no,”

she said, before moving to deny the removal request. “But if that tree is dangerous, by golly, we’ll let them take it down. We don’t want dangerous trees, because they can damage people’s property and injure people. But in this case the (surrounding) residents came out and said ‘this is a healthy tree and we want to keep it.’” David Purdy was one of two local residents who came

out to Tuesday’s meeting to present his case for saving the tree. Purdy, who lives a block north of the tree in question, said he received the support of 80 neighbours in his efforts to preserve the black oak – all in the span of just two days. “People emphasized over and over and over again that these trees are essential to the quality of our neighbourhood. Sorauren Avenue condo plans opposed ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Planning staff say 383 Sorauren Ave. isn’t a fit. Toronto and East York Community Council voted Tuesday to oppose a proposed condo development at 383 Sorauren Ave. at the

Ontario Municipal Board. Community council adopted a report at the meeting, recommending council authorize the city solicitor, together with city planning staff and any other appropriate staff, to oppose the applicant’s appeal respecting the zoning bylaw amendment

I am a fourth year nursing student deeply committed to my academic and professional career. But I am also a girl who loves to shop. Coming from a working class, low income neighbourhood, I learned the importance of shopping frugally and saving as much as I can. I enjoy delivering flyers to my neighbourhood because I get to help inform my community about sales and opportunities to save. In addition, I also get information about upcoming sales and deals that help me shop for my needs at a more affordable price. Congratulations Kavitha… keep up the amazing work!

According to the city’s planning department, the proposal does not provide adequate transition to its existing and planned context, it does not provide sufficient parking and it does not provide enough private amenity space, among other concerns. Toronto council will consider the recommendation at its Oct. 8 meeting. What do you think about community council’s decision? Was it the right one? I have been a carrier for a few years. I like to do this job because when I hand out the flyers, I get exercise from this and also the neighbours are very friendly. Also, the money that I get from this will go to my post-secondary school funding. Some of my hobbies include playing computer games and watching television. Thank you for doing a great job Tony and congratulations!
