Contest puts violinist in the running to own rare musical instrument LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com An internationally renowned classical musician will compete for the opportunity of her young career to own a rare and historic instrument – for a three-year period – as part of a Canada Council for the arts contest which runs Sept. 16 to 20. Violinist Iryna Krechkovsky, who immigrated to the High Park area in the mid-90’s is among 30 finalists from across Canada who will battle it out to be granted the use of one of the instruments, valued at millions of dollars each. The instruments include 13 violins, four cellos and one cello bow that are valued at more than $28 million. “I’ve known about the contest ever since I’ve lived in Canada,” Krechkovsky told The Villager in an interview from California where she is currently working. “It always seemed like a far away idea. It’s incredible what the Canadian government does for the arts.” Krechkovsky says she’s at the right point in her career for an opportunity like this.

‘I’ve known about the contest ever since I’ve lived in Canada. It always seemed like a far away idea. It’s incredible what the Canadian government does for the arts.’ Violinist Iryna Krechkovsky

“You get to play on a piece of history for three years,” she said, enthusiastically. “I’m really excited.” As part of the contest, the young musician was required to submit a CD recording of one of her live performances and complete an essay outlining why she believes she is deserving of such an opportunity. She must perform an audition and complete an interview before a jury. If Krechkovsky wins, to play on one of these fine-stringed instruments would provide her “a real voice,

to say what I want to say” with her music. “It’s a great tool,” she said. Winners will be ranked and will get to choose the instruments according to their ranking, explained Krechovsky. Currently, she’s playing a modern instrument, created and built by a New Yorker in 2007. “It’s the first (violin) I’ve ever owned,” said Krechkovsky. She first picked up the instrument at the age of six. Krechkovsky hails from a musical family so it was natural that she would become a musician. “I’ve always taken it seriously – I’ve always loved it and known I do it,” she said. Currently, she is performing in a piano trio with her husband. The couple are artists-in-residence at the University of California. The two codirect chamber music at the Orange County Great Park, putting on free concerts. Krechkovsky will return to Toronto before the contest begins, which will give her ample opportunity to catch up with family. The competition results will be announced Sept. 26.

BIA seeks to transform St. Clarens Parkette Community brainstorming session set for Sept. 16 ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com St. Clarens Parkette is a small cityrun park with a few benches and some dated play equipment, but the Dundas West Business Improvement Area (BIA) thinks it could be much more. “We want to turn it into a little hub of activity,” said Helder Ramos, coordinator of the Dundas West BIA. “We think it’s in everyone’s best interest to have a park that is heavily used.” Currently the parkette, at 1717 Dundas St. W., is under-used, Ramos said. “Every time I walk by it, I don’t see anyone using it. It isn’t very well used,”

This new mural in St. Clarens Parkette on Dundas Street West will set the stage for a community brainstorming session on how this small park could be improved. The mural will officially be unveiled at the beginning of a this brainstorming/re-vitalization meeting organized by the Dundas West Business Improvement Area on Sunday at the Parkette.

he said. “That may have something to do with the design.” But before any plans get underway to transform the park, the BIA wants to hear what the community and surrounding businesses would like there.

The BIA will host this brainstorming/re-vitalization meeting Sunday, Sept. 16 at 3 p.m. at the St Clarens Parkette. To get the ideas flowing and start the planning off with a bang, the BIA will begin the afternoon by unveiling

a new mural, which has been installed in the parkette. “It is a mural that was put up a couple weeks ago,” Ramos said. The mural is made out of cut plywood and was designed by local artist José Ortega and sponsored by

the City of Toronto and the Dundas West BIA, with materials provided by Decor Terminal. “This year’s mural is a playful first step towards our goal of making this small parkette more attractive to local residents,” said Lubo Brezina, chair of the Dundas West BIA. Following the unveiling there will be a talk by Jutta Mason, from The Centre for Local Research into Public Space (CELOS), who has played a role in the transformation of Dufferin Grove Park, Campbell Park, MacGregor Park and the Wallace Emerson Rink. “Jutta will talk about trials and tribulations she has had over the years and the kinds of things we should have in place,” Ramos said. Following the talk, the floor will be open to the community and business owners to have their say. The brainstorming session is being done in advance of the DuWest BIA annual general meeting in November. At that time, Ramos said the board will take a look at all the ideas that come out of the session and see how to proceed.

7 Things You Must Know Before Putting Your Home Up for Sale

Join Terry Fox Run event at High Park this weekend Join the Terry Fox Run at High Park this Sunday and raise money for international cancer research. Last year, millions of Ontarians raised more than $12 million by participating in hundreds of Terry Fox Runs and nearly 4,000 school events. Run registration opens at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16 at the Bloor Street West entrance to High Park. Terry Fox is a Canadian icon whose foundation has raised more than $600 million to date for cancer research worldwide since his death. In 1980, Terry dipped his prosthetic leg in the water in St. John’s Newfoundland to launch his cross-Canada Marathon of Hope. Terry ran through the Atlantic Provinces, then Quebec and Ontario averaging an incredible 42 kilometres, nearly a marathon

Proposal issued in May to three telecommunications companies RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Hong Kong’s had it since 2007. New York City, London and Paris have all recently introduced it. But when it comes to wireless Internet, it’s unclear when Torontonians will join their international counterparts surfing the net, updating social media statuses or engaging in other online activities while on public transit. GO Transit and TTC say they’re prioritizing implementation of Wi-Fi. But spokespersons for both transit agencies were unable to say when exactly that will be. Malon Edwards of Metrolinx, the provincial Crown agency tasked with running GO, said Wi-Fi is a priority of the transit authority’s passenger charter, which promises riders a “comfortable travel experience.” He said a rollout is tentatively scheduled for sometime in 2013, but Wi-Fi planning is still in the early stages. “There is no firm date for implementation,” said Edwards last week. Meanwhile the TTC, which has discussed since 2010 installing a wireless network to allow phone and Internet use in the subway, plans to provide an update during a board meeting sometime in the fall, said Jessica Martin. “There hasn’t been much movement,” said Martin, who works in corporate communications for TTC. “We have limited info at the moment.” What is known, according to a May report presented to

the TTC board, is a request for proposal (RFP) was issued in May by the TTC for three pre-qualified telecommunications companies: Bell Mobility, Broadcast Australia and ExteNet Systems, based in Chicago. The winning bidder will be responsible for designing and installing a wireless network to work in TTC subway stations and platforms, but not tunnels. The provider would cover the estimated $50-million installation cost, in addition to an annual fee to cover operational costs. Commission (CRTC) customers of all available cellular carriers would have equal access to the network, no matter which company is ultimately chosen as the wireless provider. Questions remain as to whether the wireless service will require users to pay for access or whether it will be offered at no extra cost beyond fare entry to the subway. Offering a free Wi-Fi service that requires users to watch ads in exchange for access is growing increasingly popular, with global spending on Internet advertising rising more than 30 per cent in the last three years according to a recent report by

forecaster ZenithOptimedia. Over the summer, New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority offered free Wi-Fi until Sept. 7 at six subway stations located in the Chelsea neighbourhood of Manhattan, with plans to expand the service to 30 more stations by the end of the year. London’s Underground introduced Wi-Fi to 80 tube stations during the Summer Olympic Games at no cost to users. The Paris Metro has also introduced a limited service. Whether free or not, Mihnea Stoian believes in an age of smart phones and tablet computers that it is unacceptable Toronto transit vehicles are not providing wireless connections. “I would say that not having Wi-Fi is out of step as to what we as a society expect,” said Stoian, co-founder of the transit advocacy group Commuters United, along with Nilaye Thakrar. While Stoian praised both TTC and GO for improving how it updates commuters on service changes, he said it was frustrating not to be able to enjoy the same amenities transit riders in other parts of the world take for granted. “We can’t always be playing catch-up if we want to have a world-class transit system like in Asia or Europe,” he said recently.

Root cause of poverty needs to be addressed, says reader

The Bloor West Villager is published every Thursday at 175 Gordon Baker Rd., Toronto, ON M2H 0A2, by Toronto Community News, a Division of Metroland Media Group Ltd.

Terry Fox Run helps sustain a legacy of hope T

here’s a lesson for volunteer organizations to observe when it comes to the Terry Fox Run. The event has grown enormously over its 32 years and is now a worldwide undertaking – one that even goes beyond the traditional Sunday run in multiple locales. For example, there’s now a separate National School Run Day. There’s also an intriguing new initiative making its debut this year. Canadian university students are being urged to get involved with Terry’s Cause on our view Campus. Among its goals is “to inspire future generations You can honour with Terry’s story of courage, selflessness and hope.” So far, the memory of nine events are confirmed, including one in Toronto. Canadian hero Students at University of Toronto will participate in a run bringing students from all three of its campus locations (downtown Toronto, Mississauga, Scarborough) to its Scarborough campus. While most of the university events are taking place Sunday, Toronto’s is scheduled for Oct. 3. It’s a fitting expansion for a number of reasons. Terry Fox was a first-year student at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. when he was diagnosed with bone cancer, which resulted in his right leg being amputated above the knee. The connection of this event to a university campus is an obvious one. Just as importantly, by directly engaging university students – our leaders of tomorrow – Terry Fox Run organizers are making a shrewd, sustainable investment in ensuring the continuation of Fox’s legacy. It also signals renewal. Many organizations run the risk of becoming irrelevant once the generation that created those organizations passes on. It’s a sad, but undeniable reality; volunteer organizations need to consider a form of succession planning if they hope to be sustainable. And there’s reason to hope. Our young people do volunteer. In a Statistics Canada report released earlier this year, titled Caring Canadians, Involved Canadians, nearly 60 per cent of Ontarians between the ages of 15 and 24 volunteered at least once in the previous 12 months. It’s the highest volunteer rate of the six age groups cited in the survey, and well above the provincial rate of 47.7 per cent. Participating in the Terry Fox Run is an excellent way to honour the memory of a bonafide Canadian hero. It always has been. Toronto Community News is a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. To the editor: It’s disheartening to learn funding for many of the youth programs and infrastructure projects in Toronto’s priority neighbourhoods is running out. These initiatives provide young people with opportunities to gain valuable skills they can use to pursue job training or a post-secondary education. While these programs are important, they are only the first step and more needs to be done to stem poverty in priority neighbourhoods. The most effective way of eliminating poverty is to tackle its root causes: underemployment, unemployment and lower average pay for marginalized communities. Numerous studies have shown that marginalized communities have lower employment and participation rates and are compensated less for their labour. By minimizing labour market inequities, we as a society, can reduce poverty and its associated effects. Richard Sunichura

Ford’s political career will survive court case

R

ob Ford was never going to get out of that courtroom unscathed, and by the time Clayton Ruby was finished with him on the stand last Wednesday, the Mayor of Toronto was pretty much on the ropes. At the end of it, our mayor emerged as a seemingly careless steward of the city, wilfully ignorant of the laws he had sworn to uphold, a passionate defender of the social benefits of high school football but disinterested in almost everything else. It’s not a surprise. If Ruby had been permitted to by Judge Charles Hackland, he might have been able to introduce a laundry list of stories with which we are all familiar regarding Ford’s behaviour. Ford’s lawyer Alan Lenczner successfully argued that questioning on those matters would do

THE CITY

david nickle

more than embarrass the mayor. It might also have embarrassed a great many voters – because let’s face it: No one who voted for him could say they weren’t told exactly the kind of guy Ford was. Now, he is facing the very real prospect of losing the job to which he was elected. He is accused of contravening the Ontario Municipal Conflict of Interest Act when he spoke and voted on the floor of council in February on a matter in which he had a financial interest: a requirement by Toronto

Council that he repay $3,150 to 11 lobbyists who donated to his football charity while he was a city councillor. Unless Judge Hackland is persuaded by Lenczner’s suite of finely-honed legal arguments – council had no authority to order the repayment; the mayor made an error in judgement in good faith; Ford’s interpretation of the Conflict of Interest Act (which he admitted to never having read) is correct – he will have little choice but to remove the mayor from office. Of course, there will be another election for the mayor should that happen. If the sentence comes down without also imposing a restriction preventing him from running, it could be that Ford becomes a candidate in the byelection called to replace him. It could be that he

would prevail in such a byelection on the well-worn narrative of victimhood: Rob Ford, the candidate who was removed from elected office by a judge for the crime of helping schools in poor neighbourhoods have football teams. If the judge imposes restrictions, count on him running again in the first election he can. And give him good odds of winning that one. Because the time has come to face facts: when it comes to Rob Ford, there is a large constituency of voters that don’t want to face facts when it comes to their candidate. Their love appears to be unconditional. n David Nickle is The Villager’s City Hall columnist. His column appears every Thursday. contact him at dnickle@insidetoronto.com

Simple ways to add value to your home Start by clearing out your storage areas and organizing their contents. Uncluttering your home will instantly make it look bigger and cleaner.

When you want to improve the value of your home, get the most out of the money you spend on renovations with a few easy remodeling tips.

An Updated Kitchen

Window Shutters

Gone are the days of the purely utilitarian kitchen. Today, kitchens require a balance between functionality and personal style. Invest in a new kitchen table that is both serviceable and aesthetically pleasing. Ever wondered what to do with that dining room you never use? A lot of families are doing away with the tradition of having a separate dining room by joining the two rooms. That way you get added space and value in the room that you are using more often.

One of the best ways to add value is at the window. The refreshed polysatin shutters are virtually indistinguishable from finely painted ones – making these shutters an excellent investment choice for your home.

Modern Bathrooms Just by making a few changes in your bathroom you can create a more attractive and comfortable space, as well as increase the value of your home significantly. Updating simple fixtures such as your faucet and sink, or adding in a bath, can give any outdated bathroom new style.

Storage Space A stuffy old attic or basement that hasn’t been cleaned out in years is a waste of valuable space.

Closing a cottage can take up to four weekends so start your winterizing projects before cold weather sets in.

Close down the cottage with confidence Do you feel that? There's that recognizable chill in the air. Fall's back with its shorter days and changing leaves. It's time again to shut down the cottage for the winter. You spend so much time and money on your family cottage, that it only makes sense to do all you can to protect it. By being as thorough as possible, you'll not only keep out the weather and little critters, but you'll also keep your property insurance costs down by reducing the chance of damage over the winter and any resulting claims. Keep in mind that on average closing your cottage can take up to four weekends. Aim to be finished by the Thanksgiving weekend because the cold and frost tends to arrive earlier in cottage country. Here's a brief check list to help you stay organized: • Take a good look around your entire property. Identify anything that may need an emergency repair before you close for the season and make sure there's time to get it done. A good example is roof repairs because snow and ice over the winter could make the problem much worse. • Animal and weather proof your place: Clean out the gutters and the chimney. Before you leave for the season, be sure to cover the chimney

to keep out the weather and animals. Check for and seal any small openings. Secure and seal all the windows and doors. • Make your cottage burglar-proof. Ultimately, you want to your place as uninteresting as possible. If you have a gate at the entrance of your driveway, chain it up. Tidy up outside, packing up all outdoor furniture and removing any fire hazards. Inside, close your blinds, curtains and/or shutters. • Clean out your kitchen and fridge. Canned food can expand and possibly explode over the winter and other food items can attract mice. Leave your cupboards spotless so that you won't come back to any surprises in the spring. If you'd rather not bring it all the way back to the city, consider throwing an end-of-season party for your neighbours or donate it to a local food-bank. • Turn off the water, electricity and in some cases the natural gas. Be sure to drain the pipes to prevent freezing and cracking. Pouring environmentally friendly non-toxic antifreeze (used in RVs) into your toilets is a good idea if you're unable to drain them completely. • Last but not least — enjoy the winter!

Sixth annual TUFF film festival runs in Toronto subway system More than 70 films selected for this year’s festival RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A film festival taking place in subway stations promises a diverse offering of cinematic fare for commuting movie lovers with literally one minute to spare. All week long, the sixth annual Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF) will screen 60-second silent films on the platforms at all TTC subway stations via the Pattison OneStop screens, which also display next train information, news and advertising. In all, more than 70 films were chosen from 31 different countries for this year’s festival, which runs at the same time as the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). But unlike the heavy wattage glamour of TIFF, TUFF co-founder Michael Girgis promises no Hollywood celebrities or red carpets, just engaging short films that riders can watch in entirety while they wait for their train to arrive. “The usual arrival for a subway train is between three and five minutes,” said Girgis, president and CEO of the OneStop Media Group. “With that wait time, we felt compelled to program the network rather than just sell advertising.” Girgis, who founded the festival with Sharon Switzer, said TUFF gives younger filmmakers the chance to

showcase their talents at a time when the city is hungry for film. “We just felt it made sense to do this fest when the city is celebrating film,” Girgis said. “Why not have people celebrate young filmmakers at a time when we’re celebrating blockbuster filmmakers?” The films will screen on more than 300 Pattison digital screens every 10 minutes each of the day of the festival, which runs until Sept. 17. In addition, designated screens, or film zones, at Dundas, St. Andrew and Bloor stations will show the films uninterrupted. WATCH FILMS ONLINE Non-TTC users can also watch films online at www. torontourbanfilmfestival.com or head to the Drake Hotel on Queen Street West from Sept. 14 to 16 where a special screening room will be made available. Viewers can also cast one online vote per day for their favourite films. The most popular choice will receive the festival’s Viewer’s Choice award. The Top 10 films, as voted by viewers, will be re-screened on the final Sunday of the festival. Jennifer Baichwal, a Canadian documentarian, will act as this year’s festival judge and will pick the Top 3 films, as well as an award

for $2,500 presented by the City of Toronto for emerging filmmaker. “There’s something wonderful about the constraint of making a 60-second film to be shown in places most people find to be interstitial, between one destination and the next,” said Baichwal in a release. Filmmaker Jake Chirico said TUFF is a rare opportunity for independent artists to showcase work in a public setting such as the TTC. “It’s a great way to build arts into a public space and we need more of that,” said Chirico, co-credited along with Lemo Gariba for Magic Colouring Friend Zone: Let’s Draw screening Wednesday Sept. 12. Gerald Fantone said he got some of the idea for his submission Urban Zoo from traveling on the TTC and observing human behaviour. “I’m just excited so many people will have a chance to see my work,” said Fantone who, along with Chirico, was at the media launch for TUFF last week. TTC chair Karen Stintz also spoke at the press conference, which took place at Dundas station. “To be able to partner with an incredible film festival and showcase this incredible talent in our city speaks volumes to the dynamic creativity we have in Toronto,” Stintz said.

United Way seeks input about making city better Fundraising goal set at $116 million JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com United Way Toronto is looking to Torontonians to share more than their time and money this year. The organization, which funds some 200 health and social service agencies across the city, is also asking residents to share their ideas on how to build a stronger Toronto. Members of many of those agencies dropped by Commerce Court last Thursday as United Way Toronto unveiled its latest initiative, Imagine a City, at its annual fundraising campaign launch. Imagine a City calls on people to go online and share ideas they feel will strengthen Toronto. United Way Toronto president and CEO Susan McIsaac will blog regularly at www. imagineacity.ca, as will 10 guest bloggers from various service agencies. “It’s an opportunity for everyone in the community to sign up and share

Members of local service agencies unveil the $116 million fundraising goal for the United Way's 2012 fundraising campaign during a launch event for the campaign at Commerce Court last Thursday.

their ideas for how to build a better city,” McIsaac said. “One of the things we’ve realized is that people out there have so many great ideas and we want to hear them.” Guest blogger Kadeem Robin of

East Metro Youth Services – one of the United Way’s member agencies – will blog about the importance of positive role models for young people. “Not having a role model when I was younger caused me to seek out other people to fill that role,” he said.

“I first noticed it when I was young and walking in the snow, back when Toronto got a lot of snow. I realized it was easier to walk in the footsteps of someone else.” Robin benefited from East Metro Youth Services’ programs and now hopes to let others know of the impact they can have by being a positive role model, or simply by supporting the United Way. While the launch of Imagine a City marked a major part of the United Way’s campaign launch, the organization also unveiled its fundraising target for the coming year. United Way Toronto has set a $116 million target, $1 million more than the amount raised last year. “We know it’s going to be tough, but the agencies we fund really, really need the money,” McIsaac said. “What they’ve told us is that the demand has increased and it’s increasingly difficult to get (outside) funding as well.” McIsaac said agencies that provide youth services and employment services seem to have had a particularly rough go of it over the past year. “Those agencies are under pressure and we want to give them the support they need,” she said. Marg Campbell, executive director of Delisle Youth Services, said United

Way funding is vital to her agency’s success. Delisle receives roughly $400,000 annually from the United Way, with the funding allowing them to offer counselling, a group home, a day treatment program, arts programming, mental health support and other services for youth across the city. “For Delisle and the other agencies (at the launch) count on the United Way to support us and guide us in the work we do,” she said. “People need support in life and this helps us reach kids before they fall through the cracks.” Wilson Yu, programming and personnel director at CultureLink, said United Way funding helps keep his organization afloat. Thanks in part to roughly $150,000 in funding from the United Way, CultureLink provides settlement services for new Canadians with programs ranging from mentorship to job search workshops to language assistance. “The funding they give us is so important in helping us serve newcomers through all our programs,” he said. “We look at this as core funding.” For more information visit www.unitedwaytoronto.com

Fun and functionality

Subaru is making an entry into the super competitive CUV segment with the 2013 XV Crosstrek that combines legendary engine and all-wheel-drive technology with a “fun” package.

Subaru has very successfully carved out a niche as the maker of tough, long-lasting cars and CUVs with the bonus of proven all-wheel-drive. It has made this a virtue that people know and appreciate resulting in constant market growth. Considering it already had all the ingredients in the part bin, Subaru is arriving a bit late in the exploding compact CUV segment. Subaru says it has had time to think about what buyers in this market want and have concluded “fun” is missing. Subaru will sell the XV Crosstrek in three trim levels: the XV Crosstrek Touring, Sport Package and Limited Package starting at $24,495/$26,495/$28,995 respectively. Standard equipment includes: tilt/ telescoping steering wheel with audio and Bluetooth control switches, power windows, door locks and body coloured side mirrors, 4.3-inch colour multi-function display with fuel economy information, automatic climate control and heated front seats, auto on/off headlights, outside temperature display and carpeted floor mats. Additional standard creature com-

forts include heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer. There is one engine, two transmissions and standard Subaru Symmetrical Full-time All-Wheel Drive. The 2.0-litre “Boxer” or horizontally opposed four-cylinder DOHC engine with direct injection is the same as found in the Impreza, here producing 148 hp and 145 lb/ft of torque. There is a transmission choice of a standard five-speed manual or Subaruπs Lineartronic CVT with six-speed sequential manual mode. Both come with hill holder mode and an ECO gauge to help the driver be as fuel efficient as possible. The CVT adds $1,300 to the price of the XV. With the CVT in manual mode, steering wheel paddle shifters allow the driver to control the transmission via six pre-set ratios. The transmission also allows “second gear” starts in order to limit the likelihood of wheel spin on slippery surfaces. With the CVT, fuel consumption numbers are 8.2/6.0/7.2L/100 km city/highway/combined and 8.9/6.7/7.9L/100 for the manual.

Another standard feature is the Vehicle Dynamics Control system that monitors and analyzes driver inputs. If the vehicle approaches the limits of stability, the AWD torque distribution, engine output and brakes at each wheel adjust automatically to assist in keeping the vehicle on course. Canadians will appreciate that the åoffπ switch allows the driver to negotiate slushy roads, deep snow or very loose gravel by deactivating the system’s torque-reduction control while the ABS and traction control remain active. In normal conditions, torque split on the manual is 50:50 and on the CVT 60 per cent goes to the front and 40 per cent to the rear. Turn the key and you hear that classic, muffled “Boxer” engine sound peculiar to Subaru and Porsche. With 145 lb/ft of torque to work with, challenging terrain defeats many small CUVs specially those with frontdrive only. Part of the drive route south of Ontario’s Blue Mountain area was rock strewn back roads with large, ominous signs warning the surface was not maintained in winter.

With the five-speed, holding it in second or third was the trick and I could actually feel each wheel dig as it passed over an outcrop. Helping was 220 mm of ground clearance, one of the highest in the segment and better than some SUVs. This, I thought, is why people buy a Subaru. In that one great snowstorm of the year, or the driving rain or just when you need it, knowing there is a proven AWD system on your side is worth it. As for the fun part, the Crosstrek will never be a STI or BRZ, but by keeping the revs up, the potential is definitely there. The interior was very Subaru being simple and uncluttered. The two XVs I tried both had the coal bin black interiors Subaru is so fond of but there is an ivory offered as well. On the exterior there are the usual hues but also a tangerine orange and a khaki that were both quite attractive and, with the orange in particular, making the Crosstrek stand out. Cargo space is what CUVs buyers want and the XV has it with 632 litres (22.3 cu ft) behind the second row 60/40 split fold second row seat. Thatπs enough for three golf bags or a mountain bike with both wheels attached. It will tow 680 kg and carry another 68 kg on the roof. Subaru arguably invented the crossover utility vehicle (CUV) with the first generation Forester sold here starting

in 1998. Based on the Legacy sedan, the Forester and the Crosstrek have a lot in common. For instance, the Crosstrek is based on the Impreza sedan. Both share the same architecture of “Boxer” engine and AWD that can be traced back some four decades. What the Crosstrek does is offer all the attributes of the Forster but in a smaller package while retaining the rock solid core Subaru design/build qualities.

FIRST LOOK: Honda Accord 2013 The Accord is one of the three ‘pillars’ of the Honda lineup along with the Civic and CR-V. Combined, these three vehicles account for 80 per cent of all Honda sales in Canada.

The Honda Accord has been around for 37 years uninterrupted and is now entering its ninth generation with the launch of the 2013 model.

The interior of the 2013 is much improved with more soft touch materials and a more luxurious look all round.

Honda says the Accord has the roomiest cabin in the segment, although it is 90 mm shorter than the outgoing model.

A look at the back seat area of 2013 Honda Accord reveals room for three adults.

The redesigned 2013 Accord is more sculpted than ever before, yet still has a somewhat conservative design in comparison with the softer lines of the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima.

MARINO’S FINE CARS

n 411 ON THE ACCORD: Honda says the 2013 Accord has the roomiest cabin in the segment with more rear legroom than ever before, yet it is 90 mm shorter than the outgoing car. Cargo volume jumps to 447 litres, up 50 litres from the 2012 model. Honda says this is the most sculpted Accord ever and it lives up to several important design concepts – it has good visibility, exhibits sophistication and refinement and offers good value for the money. For 2013, the LX model replaces last year’s SE and it offers $3,500 of added value at a lower price. Trim levels for the 2013 Accord sedan include LX, EX-L, EX-L V6, Sport, Touring and Touring V6, while the Accord coupe comes in EX, EX-L Navi and EX-L V6 Navi. The Accord Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) sedan will be launched sometime next year as a 2014 model, followed by a two-motor hybrid based on the same power train architecture. Power for the base Accord comes from a brand new direct injection 2.4-litre inline i-VTEC engine that features an eight per cent bump in horsepower to 185, up from 177 in the 2012 model. Torque is also up considerably to 181 lb/ft from 161. Three transmissions are offered for 2013 – a continuously variable transmission (CVT) for the four-cylinder models, a six-speed automatic for the

V6 engines and a six-speed manual for the four-cylinder. With these new power trains, the Accord becomes the first vehicle to employ Honda’s new Earth Dreams technology – dedicated to enhancing fuel efficiency and improving performance. V6 models with automatic transmission get variable cylinder management, which involves switching from six cylinders to three when demand for power is reduced, such as in highway cruising. Inside, the Accord has been upgraded considerably with much more soft touch materials, better seats and more overall interior space. Drivers and passengers alike will find a quieter cabin with much less wind and road noise evident. The ride and handling are improved as well, thanks in part to suspension changes. For example, MacPherson struts replace the previous Accord’s double wishbone setup in the front, reducing weight as well as noise, vibration and harshness within the cabin. The new Accord is seven per cent more aerodynamic than the outgoing model and that combined with the use of additional lighter weight high-strength steel helps with fuel economy and handling. Coupe prices will be released closer to launch time in November. – Metroland Media

Toyota to reveal all new Auris at Paris Motor Show Toyota will unveil the new European oriented Auris at the Paris Motor Show later this month, a car that will deliver improved dynamics, more distinctive styling and higher equipment levels, while also being cheaper to run. As well as presenting a more confident exterior design and a higher quality interior, new Auris also benefits from improvements to driving dynamics and efficiency enhancements to its powertrain line-up, including the full hybrid system that powers the flagship Auris Hybrid model. The car’s exterior and interior are all new, and it has the distinction of sitting lower than any other mainstream C-segment model. The overall height is 55 mm less than the current model and a lower front end design helps deliver excellent aerodynamic performance with a Cd0.28 drag coefficient, supporting better handling stability and lower fuel consumption.

Chevrolet Sonic RS priced from $25,060

The new Auris adopts the new “face of Toyota in the design of its grille and the sharp-edged appearance of its headlights and LED daytime running lights, giving the car a more powerful road presence. The new interior is more spacious and comfortable, and introduces Skyview, one of the largest

panoramic roofs in the segment. Toyota has paid special attention to the sensory quality of the cabin and worked in detail to achieve a greater sense of visual unity through consistency of lighting, colours, finishes, and even the font used for the graphics. – Metroland Media

Performance-inspired five-door arrives this fall with Ecotec 1.4L turbo engine. The suggested retail price of the all-new 2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS with a six-speed manual transmission begins at $25,060 including destination. Sonic RS with the available six-speed automatic transmission starts at $26,410. The performance-inspired

RS amplifies the Sonic’s youthful style and driving experience, with unique exterior and interior features. It is offered exclusively as a five-door hatchback that delivers generous rear-seat roominess and cargo space – up to 1,351 litres (47.7 cubic feet) with the rear seat folded. Sonic RS is powered by an Ecotec 1.4-litre turbo engine rated at 138 hp and 148 lb/ ft of torque. Unique transmission gearing in the six-speed manual, or a 3.53 final drive

ratio for automatic-equipped models, enhances the car’s sporty feel. The front fascia of the Sonic RS has a deep air dam design that enhances the car’s roadhugging stance. Vertical intakes at the edges of the fascia reinforce the wide, low proportion and house the fog lamps. Exterior colours include Victory Red, Summit White, Cyber Grey Metallic and Black Granite Metallic – a new, premium exterior colour for 2013. – Metroland Media

One of the youngest car companies in Canada, Mitsubishi Motor Sales recently reached 10 years of marketing vehicles and satisfying Canadian consumers. The milestone is bolstered by the 157,607 customers who have purchased Mitsubishi cars, sport utilities and crossovers since 2002 throughout Canada.

While early nameplates Galant, Eclipse, Eclipse Spyder and Endeavor have been phased out, Mitsubishi Canada has evolved to a more diverse lineup that today competes in three key (and one emerging) automotive segments with these distinct product lines: Lancer, RVR/Outlander and i-MiEV. – Metroland Media

registration fees and equipment costs in order to lower financial barriers that prevent youth from participating in organized sports. Unfortunately, many Canadian youth don’t have the chance. In fact, professional players like P.K. and Malcolm Subban struggled to play organized hockey growing up due to the high cost of registration and equipment fees. Fantastic hand-crafted solid wood PEROLA kitchen with chef appliances and massive island. Soaring ceiling heights, and quality finishes with strong attention to detail. SOLD in less than 120 hours. No lawn sign, no open house. If you are interested in finding out the value of your home, and how I would market it, please feel free to contact me anytime.

700k. Sold in 5 days, above the list price. No Lawn Signs and No Open House. A solid brick duplex with numerous period details. I believe in preparing every home with care and efficiency. Using my team the home was painted, cleaned, and partially updated. Chores that had not been done for quite sometime, were immediately completed. The result was a vastly improved product in a short period of time, that produced a total of 4 offers, and a sold price that my clients were very happy with.

700k. A detached home in the Runnymede and Bloor area with legal front pad parking. 3 bedrooms with 2 baths, detached brick with a wonderful south facing yard. This home was painted, staged, and all the minor repairs were completed. The result was a firm sale, above the asking price in a very short period of time. No lawn sign, and no open house.

RONCESVALLES

We spend several weeks preparing the home for maximum impact. This including painting, brick washing, updating light fixtures, engaging our interior designer and architect. The result was a high sold price, several offers, without the inconvenience of any open house or lawn sign.

BEFORE

HARD LOFT

AFTER A stunning large loft in the core of the City. Using our interior designer, handyman, cleaners and photographer, we prepared the loft for the market. After a couple of days, our client received several offers and sold it well above the asking price. It even attracted the attention of the GLOBE and MAIL.
