The collective space of Toronto’s laneways amounts to more than 250 acres. That’s equivalent to two thirds of High Park or seven Trinity Bellwoods parks. This unused real estate in the city is bursting at the seams and according to architectural and urban designer Michelle Senayah, it’s a phenomenon she’s observed firsthand through her work in city

building. That’s why Senayah and urban planner and community engagement specialist Ariana Cancelli co-founded ‘The Laneway Project’, a notfor-profit corporation whose mission is to revitalize these untapped spaces. “We were aware of these laneways not being really used or taken on,” Senayah told The Villager. “We thought this was strange because of the intensification and growing population. Plenty to eat, see and hear at this year’s Toronto Ukrainian Festival +

Takes place Sept. 18 to 20

SENIORS DEMENTIA A METROLAND SERIES

Next week: Watch for our series on Seniors & Dementia

It’s that time of year again – the annual Bloor West Village Toronto Ukrainian Festival takes place this weekend, Friday, Sept. 18 to Sunday, Sept. 20 and boasts lots of can’t-miss activities, food, music and dance. Here are some must-see attractions and tidbits of information about the 19th installment of the festival: ■ Pegrolls are the latest taste experience at the festival. Bite through a crispy, golden spring roll shell and into a soft potato-cheese filling. Pegrolls come in three varieties: traditional, mushroom and jalapeno, served with a dollop of sour cream.

Karen Horbul and daughter Brittany shoot a selfie during last summer’s Ukrainian festival in Bloor West Village. The event takes place again this weekend.

■ This year’s installment includes a film festival featuring documentary, animation, short, modern and traditional film. Screenings boast talks with directors and a live performance.

■ Potato-and-cheese-stuffed pegrolls; farm-fresh garlic from Brant County; hand-carved wooden crafts; raw gemstone jewelry – these are just a few of the tastes and collectibles visitors will discover.

■ Ukraine’s rockabilly group Ot Vinta, Edmonton’s Volya Ukrainian Dance Ensemble and Detroit’s Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus will headline a lineup of international performers.

■ The parade that launches each festival has been led by such marshals as music legend Randy Bachman, celebrity Luba Goy, the late chef Ken Kostick and Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk,

among a host of others. This year’s marshal is the Bloor West Village Business Improvement Area’s Alex Ling. ■ Discover the intricate and colourful creations of Ukrainian artists and craftspeople. There will be embroidered clothing, pysanky (Ukrainian Easter eggs), greeting cards and ceramics for sale. Check out locally harvested products like garlic and honey.

■ The event attracts more than 620,000 visitors and features nonstop musical and dancing entertainment, popular Ukrainian foods, a beverage garden, street parade, film festival, art exhibit, youth program, arts and crafts, vendor market, midway, sidewalk sale and cultural exhibits.

Canada’s senior population is due to see a dramatic increase in dementia cases in the coming years, according to health professionals and agencies such as the Alzheimer Society of Canada. Look to The Villager next week for the first feature in a series by Metroland Media investigating what’s being done to prepare for this increase, the major hurdles that exist and the innovating work already underway that gives cause to hope for those living with the disease and those who may be affected by it in the future. Mark 35 years of the Terry Fox Run by taking part locally W hen Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope in St. John’s, NL on April 12, 1980, there was little fanfare and not much attention to what he was trying to do to raise money for cancer research. But as the 21-year-old Fox ran close to 42 kilometres a day despite having his leg amputated due to bone cancer, Fox’s persistence and dedication inspired more and more Canadians as the word got out about what he was doing. Now 35 years later, it’s become our view much easier to spread the word through the Internet and various Lace up and social media channels about all upcoming local run events be a part of the happening across Toronto. the challenge Just search “Terry Fox Run” and the name of your community. It won’t be difficult to find out where a local run is taking place near you. The challenge today is to not just passively retweet or ‘like’ an event, but to be one of the millions of active participants around the world who take the next step to do their part to raise funds for a cause that is still relevant to this day. While more than $650 million has been raised to date worldwide in Fox’s name, the search for a cancer cure continues. For anyone who has yet to experience a community-bonding event like the Terry Fox Run, this 35th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope is a great way to get involved. Or by the same technological means used to communicate with others about the run, it’s easier to make a personal donation, which can be done online at www.terryfox.org Fox didn’t intend his run to just have people cheer for him on the sidelines, but rather to join him in something greater than himself. “It took cancer to realize that being self-centered is not the way to live. The answer is to try and help others,” said Fox during his marathon. “Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me.”

Mayor John Tory shows civic prudence by backing off bid for 2024 summer Olympics

T

he roof of the burger joint at Nathan Phillips Square turns out to be a pretty good place to hold a press conference. If the weather’s right, it affords a view of Toronto City Hall that is quite inspiring – the sort of sight that underscores bold visions of civic greatness. On Tuesday morning, Mayor John Tory used the spot for a press conference for a rather different kind of announcement: one of sensible aspirations for civic prudence. It was a good fit. We are not, Tory told Toronto, going to make a play for the 2024 Summer Games. Timelines are short, competition is stiff, and in any case, there are better things with which to occupy our time just now than jockeying for the right to foot the bill for a massive interna-

david nickle the city tional Olympic event. This was something of a shift from the signals Tory had been sending out in the early days of September – meeting privately with leaders in business and politics and sports, councillors and community representatives, speaking with nothing but optimism when cornered by cameras and reporters. Tory’s reversal based on precedent was nothing short of seismic. Earlier in the summer I based a rather inaccurate prediction on this matter on exactly that precedent: that when faced with an opportunity to lead with its jaw in a fight outside its weight class, Toronto’s political leadership cannot resist.

I am quite happy to see that my rather cynical assessment was incorrect. Tory seems happy too, based on his answer to a reporter’s question: “I am really happy with the fact that I am now going to devote myself to traffic and transportation, affordable housing, to making sure that we can provide opportunity for people who are on the outside looking in, to getting on with other governments and getting them to make the investments that should be made,” he said. “We do have real problems for the people who live here today.” If it’s possible to put an even brighter face on Tuesday’s announcement, consider this: for the first time since the election, Tory and former mayor and Ward 2 Councillor Rob Ford have found themselves in agreement at least in the

broad strokes. Doubtless this is not Ford’s doing: he clearly misread Tory’s earlier signals as badly as I did, and took a consistently contrarian view with a slightly less sunny argument: hosting the Games is too expensive and therefore we ought not try. On this, Tory and the former mayor seem to differ. At some point, Tory said, Toronto might well bid for an Olympic Summer Games, or indeed something else. In the meantime, Toronto should get to work on its tangible future – and demand to be treated as something more than a good place to throw a party. It is the sort of message that anyone should be proud to deliver with city hall in the backdrop. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Circus performers bring high-flying acts to the Sterling Road Arts Triangle

NSP-TBYB-BLWV

Suspended high up in the air without any safety lines, relying solely on the strength of her upper body, aerial acrobat Natasha Danchenko said she is only somewhat aware of her audience below as she contorts her body around a swath of silk. While she knows the crowd is below her, she’s focused on her task at hand. Danchenko admits she battles nerves before a performance, but once wrapped in the silks concentrating on each movement, the tension turns to “pure joy and adrenaline.” “I love the beauty of it, the freedom,” Danchenko told The Villager of aerial silks. Danchenko will be sharing her talent during the third annual Contemporary Circus Arts Festival – Toronto (CCAFT) at the Sterling Road Arts Triangle, Sept. 21 to 27. “The atmosphere at the festival is one of excitement. There’s an eagerness to learn,” Danchenko said. Bringing together artistic performers from across Toronto and beyond, the festival serves to create a forum for discussion, provide educational opportunities and showcases innovation in performance. It is not only for circus performers, but also for those who want to take in the death defying acts of a big top tent show or simply have curiosity about the performance medium. Circus enthusiasts are invited to sit up close and personal to witness the high-flying antics of the Vague de Cirque, a cast of international performers presenting a cabaret show. It was at a Cirque du Soleil performance several years

ago that Danchenko was transfixed by a silk acrobat. “It looked like dancing in the sky,” Danchenko said. “Everything she was doing, I could relate to. It fascinated me.” That’s because Danchenko had been a classically trained ballet dancer since the age of 11. “I always loved ballet. I was drawn to the beauty, the music,” she said. “It became an obsession.” B o r n i n M o s c o w, Danchenko grew up in New York and Toronto. After years of ballet, she became tired and burnt out. Aerial silks gave her the chance to redirect her dance training and experience. “It takes a lot of skill and effort,” Danchenko said. Her friend and colleague, Rebecca Leonard is a coartistic director of the festival. The Vague de Cirque’s big

top show is made possible by developer Castlepoint Numa, which is in the midst of developing an eight-acre mixed-use project situated at Perth Avenue and Sterling Road. Both Danchenko and Leonard will be facilitating workshops open during the circus’ week-long stint. Leonard, who has lived on Sterling Road for the past 14 years, said she has witnessed the street evolve over time. “I watched the automotive facility being sold, to it being torn down, leaving a big open lot,” she said, with the thought the site would be an ideal spot for the big top. “I talked to Castlepoint about sponsoring the festival,” she said. “They’ve done a ton of events in the community.”

Laneways in Toronto are unused real estate. The non-profit corporation 'The Laneway Project' is aiming to change this. The Bloordale Laneway Crawl takes place Sunday, Sept. 27.

Workshops, music jams planned >>>from page 1 getting taller and taller and the infrastructure isn’t keeping up with services like transit, including public space.” Those who live in highrise buildings don’t have access to traditional outdoor space, she said, adding that at the same time no new land is being acquired for parks. “We put two and two together and thought, ‘could we not be using laneways better, integrating them into the public realm’,” Senayah said. On Sunday, Sept. 27, The Laneway Project, together with the Bloordale Business Improvement Area, the Bloor Improvement Group and the Bloordale Community Improvement Association, is hosting the Bloordale Laneway Crawl. “These projects create local destinations to come out and walk here in Bloordale,” said Dyan Marie of the Bloor Improvement Group. “They intend to help expand a sense of public space and encourage civic engagement in ways that foster heathy communities.” The laneway crawl is comprised of three components: fun, participatory pop-up events that take place on the properties adjacent to the

laneways, such as workshops, music jams, pickup sports and more; a garage mural program that takes place in conjunction with the STEPS Initiative, a public arts organization (www.stepsinitiative.com) that uses art to connect people to public spaces – artists will be painting murals on as many as eight garage doors; and a laneway route that connects all the events. “I do a lot of work in Bloordale. It’s a neighbourhood that is really engaged and active,” Senayah said. “It’s a really good neighbourhood to be working in.” In addition to the Bloordale area, The Laneway Project is working in several neighbourhoods that have laneways throughout the city. There’s a need to use this space behind businesses, behind houses so that they become as fully integrated, safe and attractive as parks and streets, Senayah said. The Bloordale Laneway Crawl takes place Sunday, Sept. 27, from 2 to 6 p.m. in the laneway north of Bloor Street West between Dufferin and Margueretta streets and between Brock Avenue and Margueretta Street. Poverty Reduction Strategy seeks to engage community >>>from page 1 committed to investing $50 million over six years to support and evaluate programs like those of FoodShare’s. “It was a highly competitive process,” Matthews told her audience during a visit to FoodShare’s headquarters, near Bloor West and Dufferin streets, offering her congratulations to its staff and volunteers who came in early to greet the minister. More than a quarter million people

annually benefit from FoodShare’s programs. Its philosophy is that everyone deserves access to affordable, high quality, fresh food. Since its inception in 1985, FoodShare has been working with communities and schools to deliver healthy food and food education. “It’s wonderful to be here. It’s been a truly memorable experience I will not forget,” said Matthews, who with Davenport MPP Cristina Martins, rolled up her sleeves and donned an

72 72 NISSAN PRESENTS

apron to help FoodShare volunteers fill boxes of fresh produce; including kale, cucumbers and bananas. “To the volunteers, staff; all of you are doing something magical here. People are healthier because of you.” At the core of the Poverty Reduction Strategy is the belief that everyone should be able to contribute to his or her community, however, poverty can create a barrier for some, Matthews said. As part of the latest strategy, initi-

ated about a year ago, “one thing that I’m enormously proud of is, we’re committed to ending homelessness,” she said. Debbie Field, FoodShare’s executive director, pointed out that poverty remains a persistent problem in Ontario, which is why she welcomes the government’s effort to eradicate the issue. Field said she grew up in New York. Her mother was a widow. The family, which included her sister, lived below

the poverty line. “I participated in a subsidized lunch program,” Field recalled. Her mother would tell her, ‘Don’t call us poor.’ She said the lunch program didn’t make the family any less poor, but took some of the pressure off her mother. She knew her kids were getting a hearty lunch so they were able to have something simple for dinner, like cheese sandwiches. To find out more, visit www.foodshare.net

Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Notice of Study Commencement Study Overview

The City ofToronto is carrying out aTransportation Master Plan (TMP) identifying area-wide infrastructure improvements to address traffic congestion on the section of St. Clair Avenue West between Keele Street and Old Weston Road. This study builds on the 2015 St Clair Avenue West Underpass Study which identified potential improvements in relation to the Kitchener rail corridor such as: • Extending Gunns Road east • Widening St. Clair Avenue West • Extending Davenport Road west • Extending Keele Street south to Davenport Road

What is a Master Plan

It is a study that examines the infrastructure needs (e.g., roads, bridges, storms sewers) within a geographic area and provides a framework for the implementation of the recommended projects over a period of time. ATMP will be completed to evaluate and select infrastructure improvements and outline an implementation strategy.TheTMP will document all four phases of the Schedule C Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process. This includes the opportunity for public input.

City report recommends 41 kilometres of new bike lanes, including along Bloor Bloor Street could be getting its first set of bike lanes in 2016. In a city staff report to be debated at next week’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee (PWIC) meeting, a pilot project on Bloor, between Shaw Street and Avenue Road, is recommended as part of next year’s plan to install 41 kilometres of new bike lanes citywide. The recommendations must be approved by PWIC and then city council as a whole. EYES ANOTHER FARE HIKE FOR 2016 wTTC

The TTC is looking at a $95-million shortfall for next year, and this week the transit commission’s budget committee recommended boosting the city subsidy or imposing a fare hike for 2016 to make up the difference. The shortfall is near equal to the cost of boosting TTC service back to its pre-2012 levels, which was announced with great fanfare by Mayor

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT John Tory and TTC chair Josh Colle in early-2015. TUFF AWARDS FILMMAKERS AT GALA The Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF) will hold its closing-day awards gala on Sunday, Sept. 20. At the same time as the headline-grabbing Toronto International Film Festival runs above ground, the often overlooked TUFF screens short, silent films from across the world in the subway system. Throughout its existence TUFF has awarded tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to the year’s top cinematic entries, as chosen by a hand-picked prominent Canadian filmmaker. But with funding in doubt for next year, this could be the last hurrah for TUFF which has run annually since 2006.

TO OPERATE ALL NIGHT FOR NUIT BLANCHE wTTC

The city’s 24-hour art crawl Nuit Blanche is coming, and for the first time the TTC is promising to have the subway network open all night. In previous years, only portions of the Yonge-UniversitySpadina and Bloor-Danforth line have remained open, requiring suburban transit riders to rely on shuttle buses to get home after 2 a.m. This year the entirety of both Line 1, from Finch to Downsview and Line 2, from Kennedy to Kipling, will remain in operation until Nuit Blanche concludes. Nuit Blanche takes place starting 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3 until 7 a.m. the following morning.

Bidding for 2024 Olympics not the best decision for Toronto: Tory DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com

Election problems The federal election presented an additional problem, Tory said. “It was a factor in the sense that you couldn’t look at one person who would for sure be in a government, or any combination of people who would be in a government, and know you were talking to somebody who could help,” he said. “I know in recent days I talked to people in the three national parties and they were supportive, they recognized the federal government had a role to play, but they were not writing a blank cheque.” Toronto would also have been well behind other world cities vying for the Games.

And ultimately, Tory said council needs to pay heed to the priorities in governing and building the city. “I am really happy with the fact that I am now going to devote myself to traffic and transportation, affordable housing, to making sure that we can provide opportunity for people who are on the outside looking in, to getting on with other governments and getting them to make the investments that should be made,” he said. Tory said he would establish an advisory committee looking at ways Toronto could compete for the Olympics and other international events such as the World Cup of Soccer, the World Expo or other world championships.

Toronto will not be bidding for the 2024 Olympics, Mayor John Tory told reporters in front of city hall Tuesday. Tory said that after having consulted with city councillors, business and community leaders, he’s determined the city can better spend its time dealing with core issues such as transportation, housing and poverty than it could chasing Olympic gold. “In the end, it’s not my job to be rash,” Tory said. “It’s my job to make the best decision for Toronto. And I’ve decided not to submit a letter to the International Olympic Committee and so we will not be a candidate for the 2024 Summer Games.” Tory said he made the call late Monday, just a day before the Olympic Committee’s 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15 deadline for submitting a letter. He said while Toronto is

well-positioned to host major sporting events as proven by the success of this summer’s Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, there was neither time nor support to mount a bid for the Olympics.
