When comic Mike Rita quit his job in construction to pursue a comedy career full-time, his immigrant parents were less than impressed. They couldn’t understand why their youngest son would want to give up a steady job to make a living as a stand-up comedian. Yet, two years later as Rita gains more and more acclaim, he says his parents couldn’t be more proud. “They think it’s great. I get published in Portuguese publications,” Rita told The Villager with a laugh. The 24-year-old, who grew up in the Lansdowne Avenue and Dupont Street-area, is part of the upcoming comedic showcase the ‘Most Races Show on Earth,’ which takes place Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Panasonic Theatre. The Most Races Show is billed as a standup comedy show that examines racial and ethnic differences through a laughter lens. Blues for Red Door brings musicians together for charity Fundraiser to be held at Lula Lounge on Sept. 21 LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Upon hearing that the Red Door Family Shelter could be at risk for closure, Blues singer and band leader “Big Rude Jake” Hiebert decided to rally his musician friends and colleagues in support of the women, children and refugees fleeing domestic violence. What he has come up with is a star-studded Blues Cabaret, which takes place Sunday, Sept. 21 at Lula Lounge, in the Dundas West and Dufferin streets-area, and features the likes of Danny Marks, Jerome Godboo, Mark “Bird” Stafford, Big Rude Jake, Johnny Max, and Alfie Smith, among a long list of others. The Dundas Street West and Roncesvalles Avenue-area resident said the charity event came together quite quickly, within a few months. “We brainstormed and came up with ‘Blues for Red Door.’ The name came first; then, what the show would

look like,” Hiebert said. The show is setting itself apart from the stereotype in which an all-male band support female singers who tend to be easy on the eyes, he said. ‘Blues for Red Door’ has flipped this approach on its head presenting a cabaret of 10 top male Blues singers performing in front of an allfemale band. The event even features an appearance by a male burlesque performer to add some “cheek” and extra spice. When Hiebert approached

Lula Lounge with the idea for the charity show, its owners thought it was a great idea. “I’ve done some work at Lula Lounge for other people. It’s got good sight lines and a great sound,” Hiebert said. “It’s set up for dinner and there’s a dance floor.” The Blues audience is extremely loyal, added Hiebert. “They love their musicians.” The goal is to raise at least $3,500 for Red Door. “Talking about Red Door

will help inform people’s decision going into the (municipal) election,” said Hiebert, who is fascinated by Toronto politics. East York resident swinger and vocalist Bradley Harder, from Bradley and the Bouncers, is a featured performer. He didn’t hesitate to agree to take part when his old friend Hiebert asked him. Music is in Harder’s genes. He is the youngest of 13 children born into a Southern Baptist family. He and his siblings grew up singing together as a family choir. “I didn’t think I’d become a professional singer,” Harder admitted. He had several professions before taking up music fulltime, including cook and filmmaker. He says he’s looking forward to supporting such a good charity. “It’s a cool lineup. We’re a small community. We all know each other and have been around,” he said. “We’re kind of like a family.” Lula Lounge is situated at 1585 Dundas St. W. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance or at the door. Dinner reservations guarantee seating. Call 416588-0307 or email reserve@ lula.ca

Pan Am Games to highlight our wonderful city T

he Pan Am/Parapan Games are coming to Toronto next summer, bringing thousands of athletes and tens of thousands of fans and media with them. Tickets went on sale this week, and Toronto residents have until Oct. 6 to order early-bird tickets for the events they most want to see by going to TORONTO2015.org/tickets While they are not on the same scale as the Olympics, the Pan Am Games will feature approximately 6,000 top athletes from 41 countries in North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean competing in 36 our view sports. From July 7 to 26, Toronto will be the place to be for competition Civic pride in many of those sports including track and field, aquatics, sparked by basketball, BMX biking, tennis 2015 Games and much more. And right after the Pan Am Games finish, the Parapan Am Games take centre stage in Toronto from Aug. 7 to 15. What makes these games especially exciting is that not all of the events are centred in the downtown core. They’ve been spread out in facilities from the York University campus in North York to Centennial Park in Etobicoke and into east Scarborough. It makes the Games accessible to so many more fans, and will in a number of cases give residents the opportunity to watch international athletics in facilities they can walk to from their homes. From what we see and hear among our newspaper’s readers, there’s great excitement about next summer’s games. Residents are looking forward to attending events in state-of-the-art facilities such as the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Scarborough that will host aquatics, fencing, pentathlon and roller sports events next summer. They are also looking forward to the legacy of these facilities in their communities. For more on the Games and their impact on our communities, see our feature series at bit.ly/Agn5R0 There’s also no small amount of civic pride involved in hosting these games. A good part of the world will be coming to visit us next summer, and we are looking forward to showing them what a wonderful city Toronto is.

Stalled mayoral race gives voters time to ponder the big questions

T

he Ford family’s personal and political kerfuffle last week sent some serious shockwaves into the early part of this week of the mayoral campaign – serious enough to send things into a bona fide stall. On Monday and Tuesday, three of four mayoral debates died on the vine. Olivia Chow got out on Tuesday morning to host a news conference, rescheduled from last week, to let voters know that four west-end progressive councillors were behind her mayoral bid. John Tory, the candidate responsible for putting the kibosh on those three debates, held a news conference an hour later that was somehow less surprising: to remind voters that he intended to keep promises related to gridlock that he’d made during the summer. Up until the print deadline for this column Tuesday after-

david nickle the city noon, newly minted mayoral candidate Doug Ford was spending his time at the bedside of newly minted Ward 2 council candidate Rob Ford – so not saying much of anything. The sound of shuffling feet was just about deafening. Quiet times aren’t always a bad thing, though. And in this one, it might just be useful to sit a spell, and in the absence of blaring pitches of mayoral agendas – just think a bit about where we are, where we’ve been, and where we want to go. Until last week, Toronto was in what ex-mayoral candidate David Soknacki correctly pegged as a referendum on Mayor Rob Ford. For four years, Ford put many Torontonians through a meat grinder of embarrassment, insult, and privation. His

activities somehow provided some measure of comfort to others. We lined up on either side of that very sharp line Ford drew: with Ford More Years on one side, and really everything else on the other. When Doug Ford gets going, he’ll be presenting Mayor Ford’s agenda without the drug use – and also without his little brother’s singular level of charisma that would make him a serious threat. Which is to say: here on in, this election might finally just be about the ideas. Well, not entirely the ideas: we’re all a little partisan, some casting ballots for New Democrats and certain Liberals, others voting for certain other Liberals and Conservatives. Some of us feel strongly enough about that to pick a mayor now. But for the rest of us: what an unexpected opportunity to pick not so much the person of the mayor, but the kind of

city we want. In this quiet time we might ask: do we really want to pay more taxes to build a subway in Scarborough and more stations on an electrified GO line? Would we rather spend that billion-dollar property tax levy to build a downtown relief line, and skim more tax revenue from the land transfer tax to build a downtown relief subway line and buy more buses? Do we want to contract out garbage collection in the east end of the city or not? What about bike lanes? Painted, separated, or none at all? It’s so much easier to think about these questions when we’re not also deciding how we feel about all the other ugly matters that have consumed us until now. Clarity is a rare and wonderful thing. Best savour it while it lasts. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Reach him on Twitter: @DavidNickle

Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System

What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks.

What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.

HAVE YOU LOOKED AT ALL SIDES OF YOUR ROOF RECENTLY?

What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis. Peter & Greg Walker Contracting has been serving the roofing needs of Toronto homeowners since 1981. They are members of the Certified Contractors Network, have manufacturer certified installers, are fully insured and have been voted Etobicoke’s “Top Roofing Company” 13 times (including 2014).

Board pushing for a policy change >>>from page 1 and Senior P.S. was also at 120.4 per cent capacity. Many of these west-end schools are old – Runnymede P.S. is celebrating its centennial in 2016 – and are in desperate need of repair and maintenance. “Kids deserve to be in safe, well-maintained buildings,” Wylie told The Villager. “The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) is working hard to clean house; to operate as efficiently as possible in the realm of facilities and maintenance.” Yet, according to Director of Education Donna Quan, the TDSB has a backlog of infrastructure repairs for all its schools at a cost of $3.5 billion. In Ward 7 alone there is more than $76 million worth of repairs and maintenance required, Wylie said. The provincial government, which oversees the TDSB, says the board must sell those schools that are under capacity to fund capital renewal or repairs. “(However, the TDSB views this stance as short-sighted

given the population projections in Toronto that seem to point to an uptick in TDSB students – so they don’t want to sell off schools and then have no space a few years from now,” Wylie said. There is an alternative to selling off property as a way of generating the desperately needed funds for repairs and maintenance. It comes in the form of Education Development Charges (EDC) – funds from condominium developers building new residential complexes. But, there’s a catch. As the regulations are currently written, school boards can only use EDCs for the purchase and upgrade of land. In addition, one of the conditions of EDCs is boards must prove that they are at capacity in the elementary or the high school system – which the TDSB is not. Ward 7 may be mostly over capacity, but there is space across the board. “It is so unfair we are being penalized for having empty

seats in classrooms as far away from where the demand is,” said out-going Ward 7 Trustee Irene Atkinson. “It is ridiculous to bus students from Ward 7 to North York or Scarborough where there is space.” To add salt to the wound, the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) is at capacity and is currently collecting $841 per condo unit built in the city. Recently, the city approved 7,000 new condominium units, which will generate as much as $5.9 million in EDCs for the TCDSB. That’s why the TDSB is calling on the province for permission to collect fees from developers to pay for renovations, maintenance and school construction. A Ministry of Education spokesperson Lauren Ramey says the ministry has indeed received the TDSB’s recommendations on modifying the EDCs.

Living a day the polish way

KICK UP YOUR HEELS: The annual Rocesvalles Polish Festival attracted thousands of visitors to its three-day festival over the weekend. The event featured traditional folk dancers seen above and the IPA Tribute Band, right, among its roster of entertainers. Traditional Polish fare was also in plenty supply for hungry patrons walking along Roncesvalles Avenue. Staff photos/IAN KELSO

These home improvements may lower your home value Home improvements are typically made to improve the functionality and look of a home, but renovations also can increase the value of a home. Certain changes to a home can make it more attractive to prospective buyers, while other renovations may make a home less appealing. For example, a complete overhaul of an outdated kitchen is often a smart financial move, while installing a pool or hot tub may not be worth the cost to homeowners. Separating the good from the bad renovations makes smart financial sense, and homeowners looking to improve their homes’ resale values may want to avoid the following projects. • Bedroom and garage conversions: Changing a room’s traditional function often turns off buyers. For example, turning a garage into a home gym might seem like a great idea for you, but it may not be so appealing to prospective buyers. Buyers can certainly reconvert the space, but they would consider the costs of such a conversion when making their offers on the home. • Stylized colors on trims and rooms: Painting over unappealing colors is a project many homeowners can handle. However, some may be discouraged by a home that has too many bright colors or textures on the walls and trims. Buyers often want homes that are move-in ready, meaning they can get settled in before undertaking large projects. A living room painted in purple or zebra print may not fit the design scheme of many buyers. Dark colors do not easily disappear, and taping off and painting trim work or changing it entirely can be equally time-consuming. Stick with neutral colors when selling a home, even if this means

giving rooms a new coat of paint before putting your house on the market. • Outdoor hot tubs and indoor spa tubs: Many people find soaking in a bubbling brew of hot water quite inviting. But buyers often do not want to inherit a used hot tub. Although hot tubs are cleaned and maintained with sanitizing chemicals, some people may view them as unsanitary. Removing a hot tub can be laborintensive. And much like a pool, a hot tub may not be appealing to buyers with young children. • Removing closets: Closet space is often high on buyers’ priority lists. Turning closet space into an office or removing a closet to make a room bigger may be fine for those who are staying put. But these modifications can be a turn-off to prospective buyers. • Too many features: In an effort to “keep up with the Joneses,” some homeowners will over-improve their home to the point that it outshines all others on the street. There is a case for having nice things, but homeowners may struggle to sell a home that is disproportionate to other homes in the area. Practice moderation when making improvements to attract more buyers. These suggestions are merely guidelines and should not replace the advice of a reputable real estate agent when marketing a home. Housing features and what buyers are interested in vary across the country. Some items may be desireable in specific areas but undesireable elsewhere. Making informed choices before renovating can help homeowners recoup the largest share of their investments.

Tory skips out on transit debate Mayoral front runner John Tory withdrew from a scheduled transit debate this week with Olivia Chow just a few hours before it was scheduled to begin. The event still took place as scheduled on Monday, but with only Chow taking part. Earlier in the day, Tory’s campaign team released a media statement confirming he would not attend the Big Transit Mayoral Debate, which was co-organized by the advocacy group TTCriders and the Ryerson University Student Union. Tory blamed “extraordinary demands” on his time along with Doug Ford’s entry into the mayoral race for his withdrawal from the debate. Chow used the opportunity to hold a solo Q and A on her transit plans – and continually criticize the absent Tory in the process. Show creator uses comedy to talk about race >>>from page 1 Tirado, a Peruvian-PolishCanadian, Jewish-American Noah Gardenswartz, Cory Fernandez who’s Puerto Rican, Clayton English, an African American, Keith Pedro and who are both FilipinoCanadian. Bansil, the show’s creatorproducer, said he wanted to not only feature some of the funniest stand-up comics, but

also wanted to use comedy as a platform for a dialogue about race and culture. “With many of the events taking place in our society today, the issues surrounding race and culture seem even more relevant than when we first started,” said Bansil, who created the Most Races Show on Earth in 2005, in a statement. “Comedy has the ability to tackle relationships

between different cultures head on. At the end of the day, the more we realize our differences, the more we are the same because we all laugh at the same things. “ Although he’s watched the show for several years, this year will be Rita’s first time participating. Comedy is something Rita has always aspired to do as early as elementary school. He says it’s

true what is said about youngest children – there’s 12 years between Rita and his brother and five years between he and his sister and he was always vying for attention by making people laugh. “It’s overwhelming to wake up every day and be a comedian,” said Rita, whose inspirations are legendary comedians Richard Pryor and George Carlin.

The Bishop MarroccoThomas Merton Catholic Secondary School graduate says he enjoys not only making people laugh on stage, but also sharing his experiences with his audiences. “I like being a teacher on stage, to turn all I’ve learned in life into comedy,” Rita said. Winner of the Second City’s

‘Tim Sims Award,’ Rita is the host of ‘Stoner Sundays’ at Vapour Central downtown. He’s in the midst of writing a kid’s cartoon. For further information about Rita and his upcoming shows, visit his Facebook page. For tickets to the Most Races Show on Earth, visit www. mrsoe.com or call 416-8721212.

Junction Residents Association hosted meeting LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The neighbourhoods of Parkdale-High Park need more affordable housing, agreed seven of the 11 Ward 13 municipal election contenders who spoke at an allcandidates’ meeting hosted by the Junction Residents Association Sept. 11. Not only did they agree on the need for more, but also on how affordable housing should be integrated into new condo development. Candidate Rishi Sharma, a founding member of the High Park Coalition, a resident group dedicated to fighting over-development in High Park, said developers must set aside units for affordable housing. “Low-income residents must be integrated with highincome residents. I think this is very important,” Rishi told the couple dozen residents who attended the meeting at the West Toronto Baptist Church. Candidate Taras Kulish, a lawyer who specializes in intellectual property and works with the Canadian branch of HOPE Worldwide, an international charity recognized by the United Nations, agreed segregation is not the answer. In 2006, with help from Parkdale-High Park MP Peggy Nash, Kulish said he helped establish the Youth Academy at Cooper Mills, a Toronto Community Housing complex in the Dundas Street West and Scarlett Road area. “Volunteers were not feeling safe there,” he recalled. “This was a result of the segregation approach. Buildings need to be integrated.” Alex Perez, who emmigrated from Mexico with his wife, has an architectural background. The volunteer of several organizations, who said he has always been interested in community politics, agreed with his counterparts.

Evan Tummillo, who grew up in the ward, played organized sports and continues to volunteer in the neighbourhood, said “ghettoization” does not work in the City of Toronto. “We fail by creating these (low-income) communities,” he said. Incumbent Sarah Doucette, who has lived in the area for 18 years, said she has worked to protect and enhance services in Ward 13 such as community pools, the High Park Zoo, the new Sunnyside Bike Park and bus service along Dundas Street West. She said has fought hard to maintain affordable housing through rental replacement in new development. She cited the Daniels condominium set to be built at High Park Avenue and Bloor Street West. The original property had 13 residential units; the new condo will have 14 affordable units. At 1990 Bloor St. W., which currently has 19 units, the developer wanted to segregate the replacement units. “We said, ‘No, we want them integrated,’” she said. “We need to do rental replacement. We need to protect our tenants.” Candidate Thomas Dempsey, a retired teacher who has deep roots in the neighbourhood, said he’d like to increase access to affordable housing. “We need to get more apartments built,” he said. “I’d ask the city to reduce the tax rates for residential apartments.” Local resident Mary Breen wanted to know which of the Top 3 mayoral candidates

would the Ward 13 candidates prefer to work with. Thomas Dempsey said he could work with any of them. Although, he said he would prefer to work with John Tory because he supports his SmartTrack proposal. Independent candidate István Tar, a native of Hungary, said he would like to work with Olivia Chow. Doucette agreed. “I can work with anyone,” Doucette said. “I’d like to work with Olivia Chow because she has a transit plan that can be implemented now.” Doucette said she also liked Chow’s support of more child care and after-school programs. Tummillo called Rob Ford “the elephant in the room.” “He’s an interesting man, but he is only one vote on council,” he said. Perez said he’d work better with Olivia Chow or John Tory while Kulish and Sharma chose not to respond to the question saying they’re committed to fighting for residents’ wishes. Another Junction resident wanted to know specifically how Doucette, Kulish and Tummillo would address Toronto’s congestion and gridlock, particularly for drivers. Doucette said the city must keep its roads in better condition. A lot of streets are currently being dug up in preparation for the Pan Am Games. “Construction is the main reason we have gridlock,” she said. “We need to keep our roads in better repair.” Tummillo said Toronto needs more parking lots in the downtown core. He cited former mayoral candidate David Soknacki’s proposal to remove parked cars as a solution, as well as more one-way streets. Kulish suggested a car tax and underground parking to get cars off the roads.

Tory promises better Rogers TV to televise Parkdale-High Park debates bike lane plan for city DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com John Tory will be releasing a bike plan that will include bike infrastructure at transit stations and an “achievable, measurable” plan to build separated bike lanes. “It will focus first of all on maintaining and providing a line item to make sure that cycle lanes are properly maintained,” said Tory in front of reporters Tuesday morning. “Second will be to have greater bicycle infrastructure at transit stations including the SmartTrack stations... thirdly, I will make a reasonable, achievable, measurable commitment to have more separated bike lanes and a network of real separated bike lanes, rather than these promises people make to build hundreds of kilometres of bike lanes.” Tory made the comments standing between construction fences that are blocking off much of Wellesley Street

between Yonge Street and Queen’s Park Circle. He called the news conference to reiterate promises he had made earlier in the campaign, to personally oversee a committee that would work to mitigate inconvenience from road work. Tory said he would be unveiling the details of his bike strategy in the coming days or weeks of the campaign. Tory said that he had recently ridden downtown in the company of members of the advocacy group Cycle Toronto – for the first time in his life, he said. He decried the lack of progress on making separated bike lanes – currently, there are three kilometres of lanes that are partially separated in the downtown core – and said he would make it a priority to do so.

With the municipal election campaign in full swing, Rogers TV Cable 10 has published its schedule of all-candidates’ debates to be televised for Parkdale-High Park wards 13 and 14 and Davenport wards 17 and 18. Live television debates are scheduled as follows:

* Saturday, Sept. 27, 2 p.m. ParkdaleHigh Park Ward 14; * Saturday, Sept. 27, 5 p.m. Davenport Ward 17; * Wednesday, Oct. 1, 7 p.m. ParkdaleHigh Park Ward 13, and * Thursday, Oct. 2, 7 p.m. Davenport Ward 18.

Schedules are subject to change. V i s i t w w w. r o g e r s t v. c o m f o r updates.
