Mayor Rob Ford made an impromptu appearance at the city’s parks and environment committee this week, to vote down motions that would have seen possible service improvements in the 2014 operating budget. On Monday, Ford cast the deciding vote against motions to provide funding for the Riverdale Farm and High Park Zoo, speed up tree pruning and turf maintenance by city workers, and refurbish aging playgrounds across the city. Ford said he came to the committee meeting to stop “lefties” from putting unaffordable service enhancements into the budget, in advance of the 2014 budget being introduced at budget committee. “We can’t have these lefties spending like drunken sailors,” said Ford outside his office, next to a television showing a campaign-style video of the mayor’s summer highlights. “They’re reckless. They just don’t care. They have no respect for the taxpayers whatsoever. >>>issue, page 26

Cancer survivor pushes limits to MPP DiNovo urges complete Haliburton Forest race protection of High Park during question period

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Two years after surviving cancer and no longer content to remain idle, High Park-area resident Joe Mauko decided he wanted to test himself both physically and mentally, even spiritually. The one-time top pole vaulter and former National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) scholarship athlete decided to take up running – cautiously at first. Twelve months later, Mauko completed the Haliburton Forest 100 Miles (161 kilometres) Ultramarathon, billed as the toughest race east of the Rockies on the Canadian Shield. “It was a very emotional weekend,” confessed Mauko. “It was a trip to ‘middle earth’ and back. I fought so hard for this.” Mauko began the race Saturday, Sept. 7 at 6 a.m. and completed it the next day around 11:20 a.m. Mauko never anticipated challenges like “sleep-running” or getting lost on an abandoned logging road “in the middle of nowhere” around 3 o’clock in the morning. “When I awoke, I was gripped by fear. It rained, (it was) cold, pitch dark. It was survival mode so I circled back looking for trail markers,” he said. “Somewhere between 4 and 5 a.m., I finally found the course markers. I was back on course – or so

High Park resident Joe Mauko completed the Haliburton 100 Miles (162 km) UltraMarathon over the Sept. 7 weekend. Mauko began the race at 6 a.m. on Saturday and completed it the next day around 11:20 a.m.

I thought. Then, the unthinkable: I went the wrong direction away from the finish line and ended up back at the previous check point.” He was at the risk of not finishing in the 30-hour time-limit. A ‘DNF’ (Did Not Finish) would appear next to his name. Determined, Mauko decided to regroup at the aid station. Drinking some chicken broth to warm up, he set off again in the dark, cursing at the trail. “I literally hammered it and ran some of the toughest, most intense terrain from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. to make up that lost time,” Mauko said. “I

went to a place in my head I’ve never been.” He was back in the game and in contention again for the coveted gold belt buckle – awarded to everyone who completes the 100 miles. “My quads took such a pounding, burned so much. Blood vessels in my legs are broken,” he said. With the belt buckle in his possession, Mauko is taking a muchneeded rest before he’s back in the gym to train for his next challenge, a seven-day race across the driest place on earth: The Atacama Desert 2014 all in support of the Terry Fox Foundation.

‘Neighbourhood champions’ race for zoo Friends of High Park Zoo will host a neighbourhood cheering section as part of the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, Sunday, Oct. 20. As part of the zoo’s 120th anniversary celebrations this year, Friends will cheer the thousands of runners that will pass by their cheering station on Lake Shore Boulevard at Ellis Avenue. “This is a great opportunity for Friends of High Park Zoo to raise awareness and money,” said board member Simone Stock. “Everyone

Planning can ease traffic congestion

Write us

W

ith summer vacations over, students back in school and the establishment of new routines at home, September means busier times for most of us. And with the increased traffic volume on our roads that comes with the fall season, there comes a greater need for vigilance and proper planning for all of us making our way around the city. We know Toronto has traffic congestion challenges. The longest commuting times in the country are in the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area, according a StatsCan report released in late June. Traffic congestion has been identified as a major economic impediment by the Toronto Region Board of Trade, costing billions to the greater Toronto economy. The need for a sustained commitment from all levels of government to funding transit infrastructure is acute. And the discussion about what’s happening on our roadways in Toronto is not conto congestion. There’s safety, our view fined too. A pair of recent schoolchildren Stay alert on pedestrian deaths, including the losses of a 14-year-old North the road and tragic York girl and a five-year-old girl in Scarborough, spurred the Toronto plan ahead District School Board last week to request chair Chris Bolton to enter into discussions with the city, police and other school boards to talk traffic safety. Trustees have directed that those representatives look at ways to reduce traffic risks to students (an increased use of crossing guards is already one suggestion). That means there’s a lot happening on our roads. So for motorists, trip planning is important. Leave yourself plenty of time to get your destination. Remember, beyond traffic congestion caused by any ongoing roadwork, there are some new capital projects underway in the city as well that will impact travel times. For example, a second tunnel borer machine is about to start digging below Eglinton Avenue West as part of the Eglinton Crosstown light rail project – a project that, once completed, should play a part in alleviating congestion. But while the tunneling lasts, one should expect traffic delays. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with ongoing construction projects and road closures. The City of Toronto has an updated web page detailing road closures and their durations. Check it out at http://bit. ly/1goY61f In the meantime, if you’re heading out on the roads, be alert, practice patience, and plan ahead.

Mayor Ford’s love of campaigning evident

M

ayor Rob Ford has made a name for himself as a great lover of football, sometimes to the point of distraction. But there is another game that excites nearly as much passion from our mayor and distracts him from his day-to-day duties almost as thoroughly. That would be campaigning. On Monday, Ford found the hustings so distracting he could barely pay attention to questions in a press scrum, held outside his office and just a few feet away from the spot where his staff had set up a television screen continuously looping a video of highlights of the summer of 2013. The mayor finally stopped, transfixed at the slow-motion video of himself, getting ready to arm-wrestle wrestlerturned-politician Hulk Hogan at the start of a local comic convention. When asked whether he was in fact campaigning now, with his video and another Ford Fest

david nickle the city in the offing later this week, the mayor was clear: “I’ve never stopped campaigning... If you do, you lose at the polls.” In the strictly practical sense of the word, the mayor was correct: an elected official is being judged from the moment he or she takes office. However, there are strict rules about spending and receiving donations for electoral campaigns outside the campaign period. And the video, produced by a local production/editing company and scored by one of the mayor’s vocally talented staff-members, sure looks like a bit of both. But Ford doesn’t care about these things, and by the evidence, the powers-that-be don’t either. Toronto’s Compliance Audit Committee let the mayor off the hook over a boatload of

questions arising from the way he and his brother conducted the 2010 mayoralty campaign when they were brought forward early in the term. The mayor survived that, just as he survived a conflict of interest ruling that threatened to remove him from office. And as things stand right now, campaigning hard and pushing the rules might be worth the risk. Because as much as the video playing in the office window struggles to maintain a happy narrative, the other narrative – the one surrounding the actual business of governing – is less cheerful. The mayor could well see his subway plans dashed, once again, as the realities of financing the Scarborough RT replacement with a subway come up at the October council meeting. The questions surrounding videos and allegations of drug use continue to swirl, and those other videos – of an over-refreshedseeming Ford at the Taste of the Danforth give a very dif-

ferent sense of the Summer of Ford. Indeed, the scrum happened just as he left the city’s parks and environment committee – a committee he belongs to ex-officio, but never routinely attends. This time, as a week ago, the mayor came with the express purpose of blocking an attempt to circumvent his budget process, by adding projects and programs back into the budget before he had even had the chance to set a framework. Ford had to block the matter there, because really, he would have no hope of stopping a budgetary coup at council, a body over which he has long ago lost control. Much better to concentrate on arm-wrestling photo ops, picnics in parks and fishing trips. They might not get him re-elected, but they certainly seem to be keeping our mayor entertained.

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System

What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks.

What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.

HAVE YOU LOOKED AT ALL SIDES OF YOUR ROOF RECENTLY?

What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis. Peter & Greg Walker Contracting has been serving the roofing needs of Toronto homeowners since 1981. They are members of the Certified Contractors Network, have manufacturer certified installers, are fully insured and have been voted Etobicoke’s “Top Roofing Company” 12 times (including 2013).

St. Joseph’s Health Centre is hosting its inaugural Cycle 4 St. Joe’s on Sunday, Sept. 29, inspired by two local teens – avid cyclists and high school friends, In the fall of last year, Roncesvalles Village resident Hayden Mayeur, then 15, and Lansdowne and St. Clair avenues-area resident Jonathan Garcia Limani, then 14, decided to embark on an approximately 130 kilometre bike ride from St. Joe’s to Niagara falls with the goal of raising more than $20,000 for the west-end hospital. The rain-or-shine, 25km and 75km cycling challenge will take place in Caledon, beginning and ending at Glen Eagle Golf Course, just 30 minutes from the city. “I wish I could guarantee the weather. If it’s a nice day, it’ll be beautiful,” said Larry Chapman, St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation board member and co-chair of Cycle 4 St. Joe’s. “It’s just gorgeous

fitness I get,” he said recently before a day in the ER. “Some foundation members were aware that I cycle to work and asked me to be the physician representative.” The Bloor West Village resident said he enjoys cycling, but doesn’t consider himself hard core. He didn’t hesitate to get involved with the event because he said it’s a great initiative not only for individuals’ health. Funds will go towards supporting patient care at the hospital. People may participate as an individual or as part of a team. Registration is $75 and includes some pre-ride fuel, a souvenir cycling jersey and lunch. Each cyclist is required to raise a minimum of $500. Cyclists 25 years and under must raise $250. “It’s a win-win situation. It supports your own health while you enjoy the fall colours of Ontario and you’re also supporting your local hospital to do what it needs to do,” Compeau said. Monarch is the event’s lead sponsor, Zimmer, the secondary sponsor, CIBC the root sponsor and The Etobicoke Guardian and The Bloor West Villager the media sponsors.

Subway closures planned next month A planned October mid-week closure of a portion of the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line is now off. Two closures are still planned for the line next month to assist the ongoing installation of a new subway signaling system. But TTC engineers have now determined it is no longer necessary to close the line between Tuesday, Oct. 15 and Friday, Oct. 18 from King to Osgoode station. The line will still close Thanksgiving weekend, Oct 12 to 14, from Bloor to Union station, and from Oct 19 to 20 from Bloor to St. George station. Second tunnel borer to start work A second tunnel borer machine which is part of the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit (LRT) project is about to start drilling below Eglinton Avenue West. Metrolinx spokesperson Jamie Robinson said residents living along Eglinton Avenue West should continue to expect road and lane closures while the tunneling lasts. host Transit Talk wTTCriders

TTCriders, the city’s largest advocacy group for TTC customers, was set to host another installment of Transit Talk yesterday evening. The regular town hall event allows riders to speak directly with TTC senior executives. This time around the topic is transit funding, and communications director Brad Ross plus chief customer service officer Chris Upfold

were expected to be on hand to take questions. The fully-accessible event is free but registration is required. For more information visit www.ttcriders.ca seeks more bike lanes wLetter

A woman has written an open letter to Mayor Rob Ford calling for more bike lanes after she was seriously injured following a cycling accident. Taylor Flook suffered a fractured nose and lost of some of her front teeth when her tires got stuck in the streetcar tracks at the intersection of Bathurst Street and Dupont Street in August. Her experience inspired her to post an open plea to the mayor which has been shared hundreds of time through social media. An online fundraising campaign has also raised $3,600 to pay for her dental reconstructive surgery. Rahul Gupta is The Villager’s transit reporter. His column appears every Thursday. TTC’s new articulated bus spotted on training run RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com One of the TTC’s new articulated buses was spotted on the streets of Toronto recently. John Roorda tweeted a snapshot of the 62-foot vehicle at the intersection of St. Clair Avenue West and Bathurst Street last week which was on a training run according to TTC spokesperson Brad Ross. Ross also confirmed the TTC will make a final decision in “the next month or so” on which bus routes get the new vehicles first when the preliminary fleet rolls out for service in early 2014. Twelve of the city’s busiest bus routes are under consideration: 7 Bathurst, 25 Don Mills, 29 Dufferin, 36 Finch West, 39 Finch East, 199 Finch Rocket, 35 Jane, 41 Keele, 53 Steeles East, 85 Sheppard East, 116 Morningside and

The vehicles have considerably more passenger capacity than the regular 40-foot buses used by the TTC, but must be run less regularly to prevent bunching. Do you think the new buses will help solve some of our transit issues? Email contactus@insidetoronto.com

Welcome to the 11th annual Queen West Art Crawl!

What To Expect At The Queen West Art Crawl This Year:

After 10 years, the Queen West Art Crawl (QWAC) is now a significant part of the Toronto events scene. QWAC has been counted as one of “50 things to do this summer” by Blogto.com and one of Toronto’s “best art events” by the Toronto Star. This year we are thrilled to welcome presenting sponsor BMO Financial Group. Their tremendous support of QWAC and the Toronto arts community is much needed and much appreciated. They are truly having an impact and are helping to build the success of this event—and the community—now and into the future. To keep this programming free, we rely on the generous support of sponsors and the Queen West community. If you see a QWAC donation can, please consider making a donation. Gardener honoured for years of beautifying school grounds For more than 17 years, Stanley Roszak has tended to the plants at Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School. He has logged more than 10,000 volunteer hours gardening at the school on the corner of Bloor and Dundas streets west. For his efforts, Parkdale-High Park MP and MPP Peggy Nash and Cheri DiNovo have extended “heartfelt thanks” through framed certificates of recognition. “By sharing his horticultural expertise, Mr. Roszak has enriched the lives of so many at the school,” Nash said. “His commitment is an example for us all of the virtues of volunteerism and community building.” Not only does Roszak volunteer at the high school, but

also at Canada Blooms. “I’m getting older so soon, I’ll have to quit,” he admitted. Roszak, an Etobicoke resident, is a third generation horticulturist. The native of Poland got his green thumb from his grandfather. Roszak has shared his passion for plants with countless Bishop Marrocco students, one of whom was his son, who was the one who initially volunteered his father to help out. “His science teacher said, ‘the plants are dying.’ So, my son offered my help,” Roszak recalled. Plants, he says, never give one the cold shoulder. “Plants are all ver y friendly,” he said. “Dedication and pride – that’s why I do it.” ~ Lisa Rainford

‘Muriel’s’ tree saved OMB refuses bid to sever Windermere lot into three LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

The Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) has refused a homeowner’s application to sever a Swansea Village property, in turn saving a decades-old tree that neighbours have fought to rescue for several years. The OMB ruled against the homeowner’s request to sever the lot in three to build three detached dwellings at 154 Windermere Ave. In a decision delivered Aug. 12, the board found that removing the tree “does not conform to the policies of the Official Plan that seek to ensure the preservation and enhancement of the city’s urban forest by regulating the injury and destruction of trees,” ruled M. CarterWhitney. Pa r k d a l e - H i g h Pa r k Councillor Sarah Doucette told The Villager she was

pleased by the OMB outcome. “We were very fortunate the person at the OMB agreed the tree should be saved,” she said. The majestic Linden tree, a fixture on the residential property at the corner of Windermere Avenue and Budgell Terrace, is known among community members as Muriel’s tree after the former longtime fowner of the house, Muriel Kennedy. The tree, at least five-storeys high with a trunk that’s 74 cm in diametre, has been there since Kennedy moved in as a newly married woman, right out of university, more than six-and-a-half decades ago. She was in her 80s when she passed away in early 2010. The homeowner had at one point offered to relocate the tree, said Doucette, however, given its size and age, doing so would have been risky.

Construction on new design walls to start next year >>>from page 1 train traffic. Design concepts created by consulting firm IBI Group were already released online back in July, showing wall concepts made from variations of transparent, shaded acrylic panels as well as concrete pieces forming a ribbon motif, from which public art or greenery can be displayed.

To gain community feedback, advisory panels made up of residents from eight west-end neighbourhoods along the corridor were formed. The panels’ recommendations, on issues ranging from excessive shadows caused by the walls to graffiti removal, were incorporated into the proposed designs. B u t o n Tu e s d a y, a t Lithuanian House, a signifi-

cant majority of the estimated 80 people in attendance were not interested in hearing about wall concepts under consideration along the rail tracks from Landsdowne Avenue to Bloor Street West and beyond, but rather to call for immediate electrification of the corridor. “Okay, there’s less sound, but how is it going to protect our hearts and lungs?”

wondered Melanie Robitaille. “Diesel is the big issue.” Electrification was the main concern for most of the audience, concerned about elevated diesel fumes when high speed air rail link between Union Station and Pearson begins running frequent service express trains along the Georgetown South corridor in 2015. on about 10 kilometres of the corridor – with or without electrification. The budget for both design and construction is $20 million. While Metrolinx has made a past commitment to electrify the UP route by 2017, and is conducting a study to be completed in 2014. Neno Kovacevic from IBI Group said they would create a vibrant corridor that would become

a “gateway to the city” and unrivalled nationally. Metrolinx is accepting online feedback on the concepts until Oct. 2. A final decision on the design concepts is expected by Metrolinx in time for the 2014 construction start. Photo show launches crowd-funding campaign Roncesvalles resident and photoXplorers creator looks to community for support LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com In its first season, photographers captured images of abandoned buildings in Europe, including a Belgian castle, a forgotten German cathedral, a Nazi hospital and a power plant in Luxembourg. Debuting on Bravo in November of 2009, ‘photoXplorers’ was a TV series that followed an intrepid group of shutterbugs on their quest to document forsaken structures. Despite a loyal fan following, the network cancelled the show after Bravo decided to no longer air arts programming, according to photoXplorers creatorproducer-director Claude Barnes, a Roncesvalles Village resident. “We were just so sad it went away,” he admitted during a recent interview.

After repeated requests from fans to resurrect the show and a chance meeting with a representative of the crowd-funding platform “indiegogo” at the ReelScreen West entertainment conference in Santa Monica, California, in June, Barnes was inspired to launch a crowd-funding campaign for season two of photoXplorers. The indiegogo campaign officially launched Tuesday, Sept. 3 and in the first few days raised more than $1,700. “It’s a really fun way to fund a project you’re passionate about,” Barnes told The Villager. “With a crowd funding campaign, you don’t have to empty your bank account anymore. It’s pretty cool.” Barnes’ goal is not to raise money to make money, but rather collect enough funds to pay the crew and cover some expenses. “It’s a passion project,” he

Roncesvalles Village resident Claude Barnes, creator, director, producer of the TV show ‘photoXplorers’ has launched a crowd-funding campaign to raise money for a second season of the show. said. With a modest budget of $45,000, Barnes said the film crew and photographers can find, explore and shoot

seven new locations. Each location will become its own 22-minute show. If the campaign brings in more money, the funds will go toward creat-

ing more episodes. While season one featured abandoned places in Europe, Barnes says the second season would film closer to home

and focus on “the forgotten byways and mechanized rust belt of the USA.” “I always say, who hasn’t walked by an abandoned building and wondered ‘what was that?’ Barnes said. Urban exploration is a huge past time around the world, Barnes pointed out. The photographers: Laurin Jeffrey, Sean Galbraith, Steve Jacobs, Mathew Merrett and Russell Brohier, take only pictures and leave only footprints, Barnes said. The indiegogo campaign has turned into a full-time job for Barnes. There are several perks offered for making a donation. For $50, you’ll get a VIP pass to see the show before anyone else. For $800, you’ll get to hear your name and see your image on an episode. For $2,000, you’ll receive a guest-starring role on an episode from your town. ~ with files from Erin Hatfield

about the role, she said no, because of time constraints. Three weeks later, he sent her a teaser of the film and after watching it, Bremner thought ‘how could I turn this down?’ Dorey plans to shop the approximately 15-minute film around to festivals. “Our film relies solely on community support, and that support goes to bringing awareness to great Canadian film and talent,” Bremner said. The ultimate goal is to see the film screened at the recently refurbished Humber Cinema at Bloor West and Jane streets. After graduating high school, Bremner continued her pursuit of an acting career as an extra on TV and movies.

“You can’t edit theatre; film is what I really want to do,” Bremner said. She appeared on the Family Channel’s Radio Free Roscoe, shot in a warehouse in the Dupont Street and Lansdowne Avenue-area and was an extra in the film The Ice Princess, featuring Canadian Kim Cattrall. At 20, Bremner did a madefor-TV movie starring Daniel Baldwin called Anonymous Rex, filmed in downtown Toronto. When work as an extra dwindled, Bremner’s mom pushed her to find a career that would earn a steady income. And so, because she loved animals, Bremner enrolled at Seneca College in its Registered Veterinary Technician program at the King campus.

“I loved it – I got to work with horses. It came naturally which is weird because I have a fear of needles. Just like acting, when you’re doing something you love, you’ve got to get past the fear. You can’t allow fear to control your fate,” she said. Bremner is currently a registered vet tech at the Long Branch Animal Clinic, but continues to act in her free time. Currently without an agent, she has to promote herself. No Good Deed is a film about choices, she says. “Good and bad, you can’t take them back. Sometimes things are permanent and you have to live with that for the rest of your life.”

Pauline Jr. PS teacher wins accolades for latest children’s book Award for The Maples Mix ‘Em Up! LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Pauline Jr. Public School Grade 2 teacher Martha Davis is the recipient of this year’s Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario’s (EFTO) Writers Award. She was recognized for her children’s book The Maples Mix ’Em Up!, which she wrote with her then 10-year-old daughter Molly Whittington. It is one in what is quickly becoming a series of stories about the Maples family, an extended family of dolls. In the award-winning piece, Dad, the head of “Special FX” at the film studio where he works, brings home a bunch of robot animal parts that he lets his children help put together. However, when he’s called away on business, his kids get up to no good by mixing up the body parts. “Surprised” to be named the winner, Davis says the Maples stories – a third one is in the planning stages – were inspired by her love of miniatures and a lavish doll house she bought with an inheritance. The first book, Maples on the Move!, chronicles the multi-generational family’s move from their small urban house as they search, buy, sell, earn, spend, clean, move and settle into much more spacious digs. “It is based on my own experience with cleaning out my mom’s house and selling it within six weeks,” said Davis, who has taught at the Bloor West and Dufferin-streets area school for 21 of her 22 years as a teacher. “It’s a real estate book for kids.” Her daughter, Molly, took some of the many photographs and consulted on the

storyline. “I’ve been able to share the book with my grade fours and fives,” she said. Davis took a summer to write The Maples Mix ’Em Up! “It just fell out of me,” said Davis, who has always been a writer. In Grade 12, Davis won a national poetry contest and has kept a journal for years. The one-time photographer and filmmaker decided to make the move to teaching out of a desire to share her love of film with children. Now, she shares her love of writing and publishing with her students. She has collaborated with her students on several books, including Dogs Who Talk, The Good Old Days? and Monkeys Marking Milo’s Math, published by

blurb.com She runs an intergenerational program in which her students share their stories with the residents of New Horizon’s Tower seniors residence. The kids love to share their work, Davis said. The ETFO was impressed how Davis has used the internet to publish a story, according to President Sam Hammond. “The key to capturing the imagination of youth is to write in an absorbing and clever way that is full of surprises,” he said in a statement. “Martha has done that while demonstrating how to use the Internet to publish a story.” To find out more about Davis’ work and The Maples Mix ‘Em Up! visit www.blurb. ca/b/1597764
