Residents want vibrations from subway stopped
HAND IN HAND
TTC hires consultants to solve issue, councillors to host public meeting LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Dogs bark; dishes rattle; houses shake and their owners are losing sleep. A growing number of residents living along the Bloor subway line between Royal York and Keele stations are being disrupted by the vibrations of the trains. It’s a problem that’s been escalating over the past two years, according to Mountview Avenue resident Julie Thompson, one of the residents who’s leading the charge to get the problem remedied by the TTC. “My house vibrates every five minutes. It shakes. It’s like the TTC is an intruder in my house every five minutes,” Thompson told The Villager. “When it first started, it interrupted us a lot. My dog would start barking.”
Thompson stresses she is not an engineer – nor does she claim to be, however, the noise is quite high. “I run the radio all day so I can’t hear it,” she said. “It’s crazy. I’d like to read in silence. I’d like to take a nap in the afternoon. I have no peace and quiet. It’s an intrusion.” Several homeowners are worried about their property values, added Thompson. One of her elderly neighbours says she can’t sleep until 2:30 a.m. after the subway has stopped running and is woken up at 5:30 a.m. when trains start up again for the day. The TTC is aware of the issue. In the spring, the transit commission hired an outside contractor to measure the vibration and to look for any further issues. Classic whodunnit sets sail Musical recreates first-ever reality at the Village Playhouse Murder on the Nile delivers unexpected twists
show from the ’50s

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com
A sordid love triangle, an exotic local, deception and murder are all served up in the Village Players first production of the season, Murder on the Nile by Agatha Christie. A classic whodunnit with a cast of eccentric characters and their various potential motives, murder mysteries never get old for those who love a little challenge while watching a show or those who are fans of the genre. Agatha Christie is synonymous with depicting a murderous tale of deception and Murder on the Nile is no different. The fun is in watching a great performance as well as gathering clues along the way to try and guess who the murderer is and why they committed the crime. This story is set in the 1930s, on the observation saloon of the paddle steamer ‘Lotus’ that’s sailing its passengers on the Nile between Shellal and Wadi Halfa. What better place to stage a murder than on a ship where your intended victim is ensured to be there with no escape? One by one, the passengers arrive and we are introduced to all kinds of eccentric and interesting characters as they board the ship, which unbeknownst to them will be a voyage they won’t soon forget. The passengers include Miss ffoliot-ffoulkes (Edith Acker), her niece Christina (Nicole Marie McCafferty), William Smith (Trevor Marlatt), newlyweds Kay and Simon Mostyn (Rachel Hart, Nicholas Marinelli) and Kay’s maid Louise (Kristie Paille). It seems the passengers will enjoy a harmonious trip together until Simon’s jilted ex-fiancée, Jacqueline (Heather Dennis), shows up despite the newlywed’s attempts to get her off their trail as she has been following them throughout their honeymoon. Canon Ambrose Pennefather (Alan McKenzie), Kay’s guardian

who’s also on board, tries to reason with her to leave the ship, but Jacqueline is hell-bent on revenge and making the honeymooners’ lives miserable. Rounding up the passengers are Dr. Bessner (Doug McLauchlan), who becomes a crucial character in the second act, and the ship’s Steward (Emma Borsa), who unfortunately takes the most flack from our wealthy passengers. It takes awhile for the action to begin – or a murder to take place which doesn’t occur until Act 2, but if you’re patient the action does pick up after the murder and even more so after an unexpected surprise occurs. While the format of this play follows the usual pattern of getting to know the characters, followed
by a murder and the hunt for the killer, what’s great about this show is the cast does a fantastic job of portraying their roles and delivering their lines (or clues) in a way that it isn’t so obvious that it ruins the ending. This ensemble cast does an amazing job portraying their roles. As far as murder-mysteries go, this one is entertaining and full of plot twists and turns. If you enjoy the genre and have the patience to stick it out to the second act, you won’t be disappointed. Murder on the Nile runs until Oct. 6, 8 p.m., at the Village Playhouse, 2190E Bloor St. W. Back to school; back to transit talk for Toronto N
ot only are students across Toronto back in school, but all the politicians who represent the city – municipally, provincially, and federally – are packing their fancy new lunch boxes and pressing their clothes to get back to business. And there is one issue that should speak loudest for Torontonians – transit. And not just public transit, but cars, bicycles, and every other way we get around the city. The very nature of public transit is one where individual neighbourhoods and geographies can’t be individually satisfied, but our view necessitates working toward a common vision and plan. In these pages, we have called Province for a national transit strategy taking over – not just ad hoc funding that bends with the wind. We have called for the provincial govern- TTC first step ment to take back running the Toronto Transit Commission, alleviating the strain on municipal coffers. And to that end, we’ve called on everyone who sits on city council to stop arguing about a transit vision and commit to one so Toronto can be the world-class city it can be. All you have to do is travel the streets and highways of Toronto to see how busy they have become since school has started up again. The summer, a respite for many, has come to an end and the crowds of students – from primary to university – are now on the streets, and with them come many parents in their vehicles. Summer vacations are over so those Torontonians (and to greater extent Ontarians as a whole) are also back on the streets, highways and public transit slowing everything down. With these increased volumes, everyone across the city should keep up the pressure on all levels of government to treat the transit issue as more than just a one-off discussion. Getting from one end of the city to the other has become noticeably difficult – downright impossible some times, and that’s without adding the recent difficulties when the Gardiner Expressway is closed for the weekend, the Toronto International Film Festival bringing more people into the city core, and various festivals shutting down streets. It’s easy for politicians to lose track of the transit issue when dealing with their individual portfolios and concerns, but if we hope to one day have a solid transit solution for such a large and growing city, we must keep their political feet to the fire and make sure the topic never disappears from their radars. To the editor: I think it’s great the way Toronto honours our fallen police and fire department staff, but I find we do not come close when it is a TTC, roads crew, waste or similar department staff that dies in the line of duty. I know these other occupations are not as high profile, but at times can be equally hazardous. The families of a fallen waste department worker feel the loss as much as a fire department’s family. So let’s honour every fallen civic employee. Their contributions to Toronto are what built this city and keep it running. Dave Barnes
TCH report stands chance of success
W
ith all the gridiron drama unfolding in Mayor Rob Ford’s life, it’s often easy to forget that the City of Toronto has a life beyond the mayor’s, and often beyond the mayor’s reach. On Monday, Davenport Councillor Ana Bailão provided evidence of that when she unveiled the long-awaited report into dealing with the Toronto Community Housing Corporation’s (TCHC) daunting backlog of repairs and maintenance. The report, titled Putting People First, is something of a repudiation of one of Mayor Ford’s early triumphs this term, when he led the wholesale gutting of the TCHC board of directors and put ally and former councillor Case Ootes in place as a oneperson board. As a councillor under former mayors Mel Lastman and David Miller, Ootes had been a sharp critic of the TCHC’s stock of more than 600 single-family homes. His view had been if Toronto Community Housing’s apartments and townhouses were crumbling, the

city shouldn’t be putting up tenants in large, comfortable and sometimes quite valuable pieces of real estate in some of the city’s nicest neighbourhoods. With Mayor Ford’s support, Ootes made the case once more as the singular board of the TCHC, and before he handed over control to the newly-appointed board, set the wheels in motion for a sell-off of that housing — in the course of it, potentially displacing subsidized tenants across the city. When it came to council earlier this year, councillors balked — and in a compromise set up the task force and put Bailão in charge of finding other ways to raise the $751 million needed to erase the housing company’s backlog. The new plan is much more modest. It would sell off at least
55 houses, and no more than 155 homes (with up to 100 going to tenants themselves) and look elsewhere for the money for the repair. Those tenants that would be displaced in the much more modest sell-off would be relocated to other city-owned homes in their home neighbourhood, minimizing displacement. The housing company would otherwise look to remortgaging, bond-funding and simple efficiencies to dig into the repair backlog. Really, inasmuch as it might fit with his world view, all of this is tangential to the mayor’s agenda. In making the appointment of Ootes to run the housing company, Ford really gave an old ally an opportunity to eradicate one of his pet peeves while on council.
The solution that came forward — essentially a one-time influx of an insufficient amount of cash, coupled with the removal of stock that might be seen as a little too fancy for the sorts of people who end up in affordable housing — was something council as a whole couldn’t stomach. Bailão’s report, focussing as it does on the well-being of even those tenants lucky enough to live in The Beach, stands a better chance. And so it is that the city trundles on, absent either the person or the politics of its self-immolating mayor. n D a v i d Ni c k l e i s T h e Villager’s City Hall columnist. Report of Special Housing Working Group recommends sale of only 55 homes DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com More than 90 per cent of Toronto Community Housing’s stock of single family homes won’t go on the auction block if Toronto Council approves the recommendations from a report presented by city councillor Ana Bailao on Monday. Instead, the city would sell just 55 of its stock of 619 free-standing homes as part of a strategy to deal with the Toronto Community Housing Corporation’s (TCHC) $751 million backlog in housing repairs. The city would also look at refinancing models in partnership with the federal and provincial governments, cut administrative costs and convert some of the homes to affordable ownership, selling them to the families who live there now. “The report, ‘Putting People First’, proposed new and innovative methods for Toronto Community Housing to raise revenue while retaining 90 per cent of its single family homes,” said Bailao. “It recommends that 564 of 619 single family homes be retained as affordable housing, while selling the remaining 55 which are worth more than $600,000 or are vacant and in need of repair.” Up to 100 of the remaining homes could also be sold to tenants who are able to participate in an assisted home-ownership program. The shift will affect 39 families, and until those families are notified, TCHC wouldn’t release the addresses of the homes to be sold. But the report recommends that anyone displaced by a home sale be moved into another single family home in the same neighbourhood as it becomes vacant. The move is a major step back from plans put forward by Mayor Rob Ford in 2011 after he and council changed the board of the housing company. Ford’s plan was to sell off all of the

single family homes owned by the company and relocate the tenants who live there. Council balked at that plan, and decided instead to hand the policy off to a Special Housing Working Group, headed by Bailao. The housing sales would raise about $120 million to add to the existing capital repair budget of $52 million. Contributing to that figure would be administrative efficiencies, the reduction of administrative costs that come about from selling the properties, and using development charges to pay for subsidized housing. The group looked at other methods to raise the rest of the money, including refinancing existing mortgages, maximizing bond borrowing, going after private-sector investment opportunities, making buildings more energy efficient, and leveraging land assets. The plan will go through Ford’s executive committee next month and then on to council. Bailao said she hadn’t yet spoken with the mayor or anyone from his office. But she said that the entire package was something she believed council can support. “I think there’s support for this report,” she said. “I think if it were just a proposal to sell 55 homes, there wouldn’t be. But I think the two-year plan plus a five-year plan shows how we’re going to get the money. I think there will be support to have a final solution on this.”

The West Toronto Railpath is one of two City of Toronto projects that will be honoured with national awards for urban design during a ceremony this Friday. The linear path that stretches 2.1 kilometres between Cariboo Avenue to the Dundas Street West and Lansdowne Avenue area to south of Bloor Street West has been deemed a 2012 National Urban Design Award winner by Architecture Canada/Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC), hailed as the leading voice of architecture in Canada. It is RAIC’s aim to build awareness and appreciation for the contribution architecture makes to the physical and cultural well-being of Canadians. The National Urban Design Awards recognize individuals, organizations, firms and projects that have contributed to not only the quality of life in Canadian cities, but to their sustainability. Designed by landscape architect Scott Torrance, the West Toronto Railpath is on the alignment of a former rail corridor, which has been transformed into a public linear space. “It’s been completed for a couple of years,” Torrance told The Villager last year upon winning the Toronto Urban Design Award of Excellence. “I think when we started the project and I was walking down the corridor, it struck me
that it had a wonderful wild quality, which is a rare experience in Toronto. We saw hawks there, lots of insects and butterflies, beautiful views – we wanted to maintain that quality.” Torrance said he is pleased the way the railpath functions, not only for cyclists, but on a daily basis for pedestrians and in-line skaters. The railpath’s Scott Torrance Landscape Architect Inc. with Brown and Storey Architects Inc. will be awarded in the Civic Design Projects category. Meanwhile, Brook McIlroy with ERA Architects, Quadrangle Architects and Urban Marketing Collaborative will be honoured for the Toronto Avenues and Mid-Rise Buildings Study in the Urban Design Plans category. The abandoned rail line that is the West Toronto Railpath was purchased by the city in 2002. The north trailhead is located at Cariboo Avenue, north of Dupont Street and west of Osler Street. The trail extends south to the intersection of Dundas Street and Sterling Road with bridge crossings at Dupont Avenue and Bloor Street West. The former spur line once serviced local industrial properties, but had not been in use for more than four decades. - Lisa Rainford

Bike without Borders to benefit from funds raised >>>from page 1 executive director of Bikes without Borders, said this, the second such fundraiser for the organization, is something to behold as riders come out, dapperly dressed, and make a group ride around town. Smith said she expects Saturday’s ride to be similar to last year – hundreds of men and women, dressed in tweed coats and pants, skirts and hats. The dress is open to interpretation, but Smith described it as British-inspired fashions from around the mid-20th century, the height of the tweed fashion era. Funds are raised for Bikes without Borders, which uses bikes as tools for development in marginalized communities both in Toronto and as far away as Africa, through the registration fee but in exchange, riders get tea, supper and an after party at the Dovercourt House as well as a chance to win a number of bike-related prizes for things such as most dandy chap and lady and the best mustache. Registration is $25 in
advance or $30 on the day of the event. Groups of people can assemble a “Tweam” of riders and registration is $20 per team member or $25 on the day. Registration, for those who haven’t registered online, begins at 2:30 p.m. The group of dapper drivers will head out on the Tweed Ride at 4 p.m. In addition to the registration fee, riders can also fundraise for the organization if they choose, and those who raise $1,000 or more get a brightly coloured U.K.-style Bobbin Bike. The ride begins at Trinity Bellwoods Park where riders will assemble. Smith said last year’s ride saw a crowd of dapperly dressed riders, vintage bikes and penny-farthings, the type of bike with a large front wheel and a small back wheel. “People had kids in little suits with little hats,” Smith said. “Some people really got into the spirit.” From the park, Tweed Riders will head to Old City Hall where they will assemble for a photograph on the steps.
“We bike in a line because you have to obey the law because we don’t have road closure permits,” Smith said. Riders will then get back on their bikes, head up through the Kensington Market and then to Dufferin Grove where they will be served tea. People are asked to bring their own teacup and there will be a prize for the most fancy one. In the park, there will be a bike polo tournament, which the crowd can watch. From there the group will head to Dovercourt House, at 805 Dovercourt Rd., where there will be a supper, live bands, a DJ and swing dancing. For those who would like to just attend the party that rounds out the day’s activities, it costs $13. Bikes without Borders is a registered not-for-profit and is in the process of applying for charitable status. Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System
What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks.
What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.
HAVE YOU LOOKED AT ALL SIDES OF YOUR ROOF RECENTLY?
What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis. Peter & Greg Walker Contracting has been serving the roofing needs of Toronto homeowners since 1981. They are members of the Certified Contractors Network, have manufacturer certified installers, are fully insured and have been voted Etobicoke’s “Top Roofing Company” 11 times (including 2012).

Nissan’s TeRRA forms new zero emission SUV concept at Paris Motor Show The Nissan TeRRA SUV concept, to be unveiled next week at the Paris Motor Show, combines two outstanding Nissan strengths - SUVs and EVs - in a vehicle that is equally in its element off-road or gliding silently through the city. With an innovative 4x4 fuel-cell electric powertrain and an athletic exterior that has presence beyond its compact dimensions, TeRRA takes sustainable motoring into exciting new territory. Building on Nissan's success with crossovers like the Juke and Qashqai, and its EV success with the LEAF, the TeRRA shows that Nissanπs zero-emission expertise encompasses fuel cells too. It is designed as a functional and flexible choice for tomorrow's youthful,
"always on" consumers, bringing with it eco-friendliness along with a secure driving feel under any road conditions. Open the door and exterior toughness gives way to a surprisingly warm and welcoming interior. The door panel is a sculpted fusion of blond wood trim and coloured acrylic, layered in an intriguing pattern. Although TeRRA is presented as a design concept, not a technical exhibit, its proposed 4x4 fuel cell electric powertrain is far from imaginary. Powering the front wheels is the electric propulsion system currently featured in the Nissan LEAF. In each back wheel, providing all-wheel power as needed, is an in-wheel electric motor, based on the
working prototypes featured in three successive PIVO concepts. As no drive shafts are required to power the rear wheels, there is no hump in the floor or on the underbody. This allows for the flat boot floor and the underside bodypan. Under the bonnet is ample space for Nissan's hydrogen fuel cell stack: a flat, highly compact unit that features worldleading power density of 2.5kW/L. The latest in a series of Nissan fuel cells since 1996, the stack costs just one-sixth of its 2005 predecessor as the need for expensive precious metals has been slashed to one-quarter of the previous level.

Education
Principal encourages students to voice opinion in respectful way >>>from page 1 returned to their classrooms after lunch before marching out onto Jane Street where they carried placards and wore tags that proclaimed ‘Don’t take our extra-curricular activities away’ and ‘Can’t take our sports away.’ “We want to get our word out, to have our cause known,” Odell told The Villager just hours before the walk-out took place. Odell is immersed in school life far beyond the classroom. She’s
a member of the prom committee and the yearbook club, she’s on the hockey, soccer, track and cross-country teams as well as the volleyball team. She hopes the extra-curricular ban ends no later than October, but “from what we’ve heard, it could go ‘til spring.” The mood of senior students is far more peaceful than that of the Grade 9s and 10s, said Odell. While Grade 11 and 12 students are expressing their frustration by refusing to wear their uniforms and instead wearing
their athletic uniforms and medals, there are some younger students who are taking a more “disrespectful” approach. “They’re yelling in the halls, ‘Let us play,’” said Odell. “We want teachers to understand they’re taking away what we love most, what we’re motivated to come to school for. What we put on our college applications.” A lot of kids cannot afford sports outside of school, Odell added. As far as principal Paul Edwards
is concerned, for the most part, it’s business-as-usual at Runnymede. “When I met with the student leadership, I said, ‘Feel free to voice your opinion but express it in a respectful and safe way,’” said Edwards. On Friday, as many as 50 students chose not to wear their uniforms. “We did not sanction them at this time,” said the principal. The fact that some schools have banned activities while others haven’t is a bone of contention
among students, Edwards said. Teachers have been told they have to make individual decisions. “My own teachers have made this decision painstakingly,” he said. “I’ve had teachers with tears in their eyes. It’s heart-wrenching. They love their kids.” Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo attended the walk-out to support not only the students, but the teachers as well. The NDP, she pointed out, voted against the new bill.

effects ranging from general overhead lighting to up-close task lighting. Models range in taste from traditional elegance to modern chic, but the pulley cord design always lends a decidedly stylish, architectural look to any room that these lights grace. Architects and Heros is a leading design brand for pulley lights and you can find a selection of their models at Windergarden in Bloor West Village. If you’re looking for something close and intimate, nothing breathes cosy better than a shade lamp. Whether it’s a floor or table model, a well-chosen lamp can provide just enough task lighting to
be practical and still infuse a comfortable, warm ambiance into your room. In areas where you want to provide gentle, mood lighting without overwhelming the entire room, try wall sconces with decorative shades and covers. Whatever type of lighting you select, consider the existing furniture and accent pieces in your room and shop for lighting options that complement its overall look and feel. Visit Windergarden in Bloor West Village to discover indoor and outdoor decorating ideas for the ultimate in gracious living. For more information, call 416-766-1960 or visit www. windergarden.com.

heritage haven: Thousands of people crammed onto Bloor Street West in Bloor West Village for the annual Ukrainian Festival over the weekend. The festival included, food, music, dancers and vendors. Above, Emma Wenglowski tries on a traditional headband for sale at one of the vendors; top right, traditional Ukrainian dancers perform for the crowds while, bottom right, Bloor Street is crammed with revellers taking in the annual spectacle.

OVER 25 YEARS IN BUSINESS Wee Watch in your Community
Parents know that the hardest aspect of returning to work is finding child care. Parents need a solution that suits their family, is financially feasible and gives them peace of mind and WEE WATCH fits the bill! Wee Watch has been providing childcare services in the community since 1984, assisting families in finding a personal and intimate day care setting which allows interaction with a small group of children and provides an educational pro-gram for all ages. Wee Watch children are busy learning as they play by participating in our program, fun theme based activities for all ages, Play and Learn books, and our monthly Together Wee Can events. “As a parent, it is reassuring to see a smile on your child’s face and a portfolio filled with pictures, drawings, detailed home visit reports from the R.E.C.E. Home Visitor and notes about your child’s favourite activities”, says Cindy. Many have opted to stay home and
look to Wee Watch for a career path. With the opportunity to provide day care in their own home, Providers benefit from having the agency assist in finding clients as well as provide ongoing support, including backup service in case of holidays and sick days, not to mention taking care of pay cheques. To find out how we can fit your lifestyle, call today: Toronto West – 905-949-1558, ask for Cindy
