Meeting Tom Robinson One of the standout players for the Blues so far this season has been rookie loose forward/lock Tom Robinson from Northland who has played in all five Super games so far this year. He met with the media this week at Blues headquarters: Q: So far this year your form has been a revelation for the Blues – what do you put that down to? Tom: It’s definitely the long ginger hair. Nah. I am not sure. I am doing what I have always done but just the whole team and the mix of us is working well. Mostly it is just hit and run – that’s what I am doing. Q: You have been through a fair amount of injury issues? Tom: I have done two ACLs and bounced back from those. All of our staff and trainers here are unreal as much as we try to hate them – they are doing a good job. Q: Is that both shoulders? Tom: No ACL so my knees. One on each. I have titanium plates in both knees so I am a bit faster since I came back. Q: Was Super Rugby always on your schedule? Tom: Yes definitely. It was also my goal after the Mitre-10 Cup with the Mighty Taniwhas. This was the place I wanted to be and the next step. Q: Where did you grow up? Tom: In Kerikeri. And went to Kerikeri High School. It’s a good school. Q: So there’s no poaching of players up that way? Tom: No. Just some illegal poaching of paua and fish. Just joking. Q: How much of an influence has your father (All Black lock Alastair Robinson) been? Some say you have a similar style to him?’ Tom: I hope not because he runs like a blimmin’ old man at the moment. I have never actually seen him play.

Q: How important was it for you to stay in the north? Tom: Well I actually came down here to Uni after I left school. I played for Varsity club in Auckland but I always wanted to play for Northland. So I played club rugby here and then went back up north. So I haven’t played for the mighty Kerikeri Oranges yet but that is the plan. Q: Did you always believe that despite the injuries you had the skills and talent to make it to Super Rugby? Tom: Yes I have always believed in myself. I think that is important. If you don’t believe you can do it then you won’t.

BLUES VS STORMERS | 30 MAR 20 19 7

Q: You played a few games at lock but do you prefer the blindside flank? Tom: Yeah the style I play is to get amongst it and you can do that at lock or at six but I think the more I learn about running lines and you get the ball in a bit of space, then I am enjoying it more and more at flanker. Q: Is anyone mentoring you? Tom: Everyone here really. We are helping each other out. Dan (Halangahu) is really good with those lines. TJ and Ma’a are always giving me help with those running lines. It is a big work-on for me. Q: How important is it for you to show you can make a Super Rugby team from a smaller province? Tom: I think it is important. There is probably a lot of talk that you have to play 1st XV down here, and no doubt it is an amazing comp. But I think where ever you go and what ever your background, if you really want to do it then it doesn’t matter where you are, if you are good enough you can make it. It’s a matter of how hard you want to work for it. Q: How do you assess your start in Super Rugby. Did you expect to do well? Tom: Yeah I did. I just have a job to do and I am doing that. I catch up with the coaches afterwards and get feedback and work hard the next week. There’s lots of stuff to work on.

8 BLUES VS STORMERS | 30 MAR 20 19

Q: What were you doing at this time last year? Tom: Sitting in a lecture room. I was at Uni. And then eating my lunch pretty much. I was coming back from my second ACL and then playing for Varsity Q: What did you study? Tom: Economics and Finance. So there’s something floating up there still. I finished but have not graduated yet

Q: What do you do when not playing rugby? Tom: I do some yoga to stretch. I also enjoy surfing. And I play in a band. It is called 999 megabytes because we’ll never get a gig.

Dan challenges Blues to be the best

It’s a long way from Yass to Narbonne and now to the Blues for Dan Halangahu. It’s a long way from Yass to Narbonne and now to the Blues for Dan Halangahu. The 34-year-old Australian is part of the coaching team at the Blues, with responsibility for the backs and as skills coach. Halangahu, who played for Australia U21 and Australia A on top of successful stints for the Brumbies and Waratahs, did not have coaching at the top of his career list post playing days. After moving to New Zealand with Kiwi wife Nadia and playing for North Harbour in 2014 and 2015 he “slid into coaching.” He was offered a role as assistant coach at Harbour under Steve Jackson in 2016 and again under Tom Coventry in 2017 and 2018 before following Coventry to the Blues this year. “I kept studying while playing rugby and was weighing up several options and coaching was never one of them. Nadia wanted to spend more time around her family, so I ended up playing a few seasons at North Harbour and fell into coaching there. “I really love many aspects of it. I enjoy the challenge. It’s working with the people that I love – working with guys from all different backgrounds and trying to get the best out of them and allow them to grow to their full potential” said Dan, who has degrees in Exercise and Sport Science and Commerce, majoring in Finance.

Dan grew up in country New South Wales, around an hour’s drive north-west of Canberra in Yass. He went to school in the Australian capital city and was introduced to rugby. He became a boarder at Kings School in Sydney with the 1st XV including Dean Mumm and Benn Robinson, who both became Wallabies. His first Super gig was with the Brumbies in 2004-05 when they won the title. That team contained Australian rugby legends like George Gregan, Stephen Larkham, Matt Giteau and Stirling Mortlock. Dan then moved to Sydney with the Waratahs, where he played 74 times until 2012, before stints in Narbonne, France and his final move to North Harbour. He has strong views about coaching at Super level. “One challenge is that for some players getting a contract is seen as a success. You don’t get to the top of the tree when you win a jersey and start a game. It is winning games,

performing to the highest level every game. It is a never-ending desire to improve - what I have seen from the greatest players is they always try to improve. That is the challenge for the young guys in the group. And the challenge for me as a coach is to instil the mindset that we want to get better.”
