PLAYER PROFILE:

scott scrafton It wasn't hard to tell Blues lock Scott Scrafton was making the most of a rare opportunity for game time when coming on as a replacement for Josh Goodhue last week against the Hurricanes. Having suffered 12 months out of the game from as early as round three last year as the result of a hyper-extension of his knee causing severe damage to his ACL and LCL, while also ripping tendon off the bone, he has been battling to break back into the Blues starting 23. "I haven't been able to get stuck into the team. It's been challenging, the boys have been playing well. My body is all good, my knee is sweet as now and I'm just trying to get some back-to-back games now with the boys," he said. The three preferred locks, Patrick Tuipulotu, Josh Goodhue and Gerard Cowley-Tuioti had been playing well and he hadn't been able to force his way into consideration. "I got a bit of a sniff on Friday when one of the boys [Goodhue] got a bit of a head knock so I got a bit more than probably planned, it was good fun to get out there and play," he said. While waiting his chance was a case of being full on at practise and afterwards working with the trainers. "It's been frustrating, I feel like I've been ready for a while and I've just been waiting for my turn to have a crack but my mates are playing and

they've been going really well so hats off to them because they've put their hands up and they got the first crack, so it's just been a bit of a patience game. Scrafton relished the chance to get on the field last week. "I hope I did enough to put my hand up and let them know that I'm ready and ready to compete. "It was awesome, I was gassed but it was awesome to play and bang some bodies and get amongst everyone. Obviously as a side we

didn't get the result we were after, we haven't been quite clinical at moments and the 'Canes with some of the best players in the world just managed to sneak a few over us which hurt us in the end. "We were applying the pressure and I felt like we were getting it over them, personally I didn't think we got the rub of the green with the referee but that's the way things go but we couldn't quite turn that pressure into points. And that's probably what cost us the result," he said.

PLAYER PROFILE:

tj faiane Blues centre TJ Faiane could have been excused at the start of the Investec Super Rugby campaign for wondering just how much time he might get on the field. With All Blacks Ma'a Nonu and Sonny Bill Williams on the roster there was every chance they would have first dibbs. But injury has denied Williams his usual contribution and Faiane, who has known his own injury frustrations in the past has been able to take advantage. "I've been fortunate enough, my body's held up. That's been the trouble over the last few years but I'm just grateful the amount of time I've been getting," he said. What that has done is give him time on the field, time to train to be in the selection frame. The off-field support had also been able to provide him with what he needed and that had been a factor as well. Having the all-important playing time allowed his game rhythm to develop and he was in a position to see what defences were doing while also becoming familiar with the playing habits of teammates. This enabled relationships to build so that they were aware of each other's play and what they did in particular circumstances. It hasn't done any harm having the experience of Nonu inside him, especially with the form he has been showing. "I've been loving it, he's been nothing but good to me. He's always willing to help on and off the field and it's been a dream come true to be honest. "He brings a lot of

competitiveness. He's a real competitive dude who doesn't like to lose and it's contagious that kind of stuff and it latches onto the other boys. He's a real competitor who doesn't like to lose, miss a tackle or drop a ball." And communication isn't a problem. "With 100 All Blacks Tests and 160 Super Rugby games he's pretty much seen everything. He's sat the exam, he knows all the answers," Faiane said. "We look to him when things are tough as well to get us over the gainline or get a big hit or something and I just hope things keep going the way they are for him as well." Faiane and the team are well aware of the challenge against the Chiefs, especially after the disappointment of their loss to the Hurricanes. "It felt like we were on top but we weren't converting it into points. The faith is still there, the belief is still there. We want to go well against the Chiefs, they're a very good team. We know the competitiveness between both teams. It's been a while since we beat them," he said. Given their propensity for debilitating injuries over several seasons now the Chiefs had defied the odds

and did it again as recently as last week when beating the Sharks. "They're soldiers, tell them what to do and they do it and they do it for 80 minutes. You see it in that Chiefs mana they talk about and you see it in the next man up, the replacement player who ever it is, the wider squad player, they take their chances and they want to earn some respect from their teammates."
