Highs and lows for Tanielu At just 20 years young, Tanielu Tele’a did not expect a Super Rugby contract with the Blues this year, let alone to earn five caps including four starts in the first six games of the season. The former St Kentigern college midfielder experienced the highs and lows in the Blues’ winning effort over the Stormers at Eden Park last round. The 105kg block-busting back scored arguably the try of the season to date. After receiving the ball in space from a Rieko Ioane break, Tanielu powered down the wing, and fended off three would-be tacklers for a sensational try. “Rieko made the break and gave me the ball. I saw the try line ahead and pinned my ears back. I have had a few opportunities to finish this year but didn’t really get there and got a bit of stick from the boys. So, I gave it my hardest. I was pretty happy with that,” said Tanielu. As the Blues clung to a narrow lead with 10 minutes remaining, Tanielu raced forward to a high kick, and collided with the high-jumping Stormers winger who flipped over and landed dangerously. The referee had no choice but to hand out a red card. “I saw the box kick and I was a bit too deep. I had to really sprint to get there and had my eyes on the ball the whole time. It was an unintentional collision. I did not see him. I apologised straight away but that is rugby – sometimes things happen with an accident. I was glad
he is all good. It was unintentional.” “I will definitely learn from this one because you can’t have these things happening.” He was pleased with a 14-man Blues side scored a superb late try to put the game out of reach. “I was pretty relieved. I thought I let the boys down. It was a tough game out there and we needed all 15 of us. So, to go off and leave them like that was pretty tough but I was pleased the boys got the job done.” Tanielu played for NZ Schools and Auckland Mitre-10 Cup squad before playing for Samoa U20s at the world championship in 2017. He was selected for NZ U20s and was part of the Blues ITC programme in 2018 before being part of the winning Auckland Mitre-10 Cup side. The 20-year-old, who is usually a midfielder, says the experience with
the Blues is beyond his wildest dreams. “I am learning off some pretty big names – I get to train and play with them every week. I still pinch myself every now and again. To get this opportunity – I am trying to take it a day at a time and learning and keep working. “Melani and Rieko are on fire and I am just learning off those guys which is awesome. It is not too bad having the best wing in the world on the other side. He does all the work and we feed off that which is awesome.” He looks forward to his return from a four-game suspension wiser and more determined to make the most of his opportunities.

Tom extends life-long rugby career at the Blues Sport, and in particular rugby, has been a big part of life for the Coventry family, and especially for Blues forwards coach Tom Coventry. Hamilton-born and raised, Tom played for Otago while studying to become a physical education teacher in Dunedin. He returned home and would play for Waikato, following on from his father Dick and brother Richard. His older brother Bill was a New Zealand rowing representative and younger brother Jamie played through the grades for Waikato before plying his trade in Japan. Tom, who began his teaching career at his old school – Hamilton Boys High, would eventually earn 51 caps for Waikato from 1988 to 1994. “The team was mostly unchanged in that time because we were all amateurs and working at a day job,” said Tom. “We won the NPC in 1992 and took the Ranfurly Shield off Auckland in 1993. They were a juggernaut after 60-odd defences, and everyone played second fiddle to them, but we had our moment in the sun.” With his teaching background, Tom always coached school sides and age group rep teams before moving on to the New Zealand Schools team that enjoyed success with Tom in 2005 and 2006. Tom gave up teaching to coach Hawkes Bay with Peter Russell for five years. They enjoyed success, guiding the Bay back to the top division, making four semi finals and eventually winning the championship when it was split in 2010.
His association with national age sides brought him in contact with Dave Rennie, and Tom would join him, Andrew Strawbridge and Wayne Smith at the Chiefs for five years, including the year of their Super championship title, during a successful time for the club. Tom headed to England for a year after the Chiefs – “that wasn’t the greatest time in my rugby career” – so he returned home to link with North Harbour for “a couple of good years” before moving to the Blues. He is enjoying his time at the Blues and has no issues adapting after such a long time in the Waikato. “As I have been involved in professional rugby – the opportunities are everywhere for coaches as there are for players. “In the end you are working with young men and we wear their colours on our sleeves when we work with them and my heart is with this Blues team at the moment. I am enjoying it. We have a group of guys eager for success, eager to learn, with open minds. “That is all you can hope for as
a coach is that the boys want to be involved in getting better. We have a 100-test All Black coming back which is pretty special for this team. He trains like one of the blokes – he does not expect special treatment. And there’s Sonny – whatever he turns his hand to he is pretty good at and he is helping lead this team.” Tom believes the strong competition for places in the team is a real strength. “There is real competition which is healthy. The boys challenge each other for starting position but also help each other when they find out where they fit in the scheme of the week. This helps us get better and improve.”
