LA VOIX
110
Letter from the Editor This term has been Chaotic with a capital "C", but has not passed without enthusiasm and gees. The interhouse competitions, newly established Blue Thread Bash and other various school events were met with such support and spirit that we can only be excited for what the rest of this year will bring. This issue, local is lekker. From the indigenous flowers on the cover pages, to the
creators and content inside: this edition stems Blue Thread's roots. The Rainbow Nation certainly shines through with the colour pops in the design, and we get those local corner shop vibes with the fashion shoot - be sure to check it out. La Voix returns in this issue and I couldn't be more amazed. The amount of poetry we received is incredible: there are so many talented writers in our midst. Although only a few could be featured this term, I want to encourage all the writers who submitted work to never stop creating - and if anyone is inspired by their beautiful words, you should create too. There is nothing as pure and as human as making genuine art, and it is something that should be encouraged, supported and evolved within school and society. Here's to the artists: keep on keeping on. As always, a shout out to the people who made this issue great. Mr Spijkers - the late night coffee delivery was much appreciated: words can't describe how sorely needed the caffeine and company was. Caro - you certainly bloomed this issue and we can never thank you enough for your optimism and initiative throughout the term. Mr Mommen - we applaud you for your patience and support after all the meetings. And of course, the entire Blue Thread team, for pushing through and creating another stunning issue. We salute you. Enjoy the holidays: take your well deserved break and come back in April safe, refreshed and ready for another brilliant term. Over and out!
Your Editor in Chief,
Chanel Bowen

WELKOM BRAKKIES
MATRICS 2022.
I need to listen well so that I hear what is not said. Thuli Madonsela

The only complaint by those in attendance was that the night ended far too early. The evening received a near perfect rating by not only the matrics but also the teachers in attendance.

KRIEL DEUR CARO BOTHA
Juf. Hierdie is my tweede jaar wat ek skoolgee. Wat is Juffrou se droomwerk? Argitek of Fisio. Juffrou Franken is PV se nuwe Fisika onderwyseres.

FRANKEN FANTASTIES
SUPER SCHENCK BY KAYLEIGH ROUX What inspired you to become a geography teacher? High School was a significant part of my life and it included all the things that I enjoy such as Geography as well as my love for physical fitness and sport. The best combination of those within a career would be to become a teacher, specifically a geography teacher due to the fact that I now can convey my knowledge to future generations in and outside of the classroom. Are you enjoying your teaching experience so far? Yes, most certainly. I have been thrown into the deep end by being given classes from grade 8 through to matric and as a first-year teacher it’s quite challenging and overwhelming but I am enjoying it. What is it like working with your father? It’s actually quite easy. This is not the first time we have been in the same professional environment together. In my matric year, he was my Geography teacher so I have experience in dealing with it as well as him being my deputy headmaster and head of discipline from grade 8 till matric and being the 1st team forwards coach when I played 1st team at school. What current trends absolutely baffle you? Those funny pop socket things that kids have on the back of cell phones these days. It’s like a handle for your cell phone and generations before haven’t needed them so why now? With your skill set, how long do you think you would survive a zombie apocalypse? I think that I would survive for quite a long period of time seeing that I hunt regularly so I’m a good marksman, I am a qualified dedicated hunter which includes knowledge on fauna and flora as well as how to set certain traps and how to build shelters. I am also physically fit and healthy and not allergic to anything so that will help when it comes to having to eat anything one can find. Lastly, I have a great sense of ingenuity so if things have to be built or fixed then I can do that without a problem. Favourite music artist? My music taste spans over quite a few genres but if I had to choose I would say Freddie Mercury and Queen. To me, he is without a doubt one of the best vocalists of all time.
COACH JACKMAN BY RA-EESA CHOTIA How would you describe your teaching method? Getting learners involved and to encourage them to do their best. So far, what is your favourite aspect at PV? Friendly and helpful staff and well behaved learners. What do you look forward to most in your new high school career? Growing with the learners over the years. Do you have any hidden talents? High Jump, but that was back in the day. Have you ever travelled? Yes, South Korea, UAE, China, Thailand, Taiwan and Hong Kong. How many languages can you speak? Three: Afrikaans, English and basic Mandarin. What is the most exciting thing that you have ever done? Working abroad and learning about other cultures. What is your most valuable accomplishment? Winning medals at SA’s and ASA’s.
What is your goal for PV this year? Helping learners improve their fitness and life skills. What did you do before you worked at PV? I taught abroad for five years. Is where you are now where you pictured yourself 10 years ago? Definitely and I'm loving every moment.
What advice do you have for students who aspire to become trainers or succeed on the athletics field? What doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger. If you could tell us the key to fitness in one word, what would it be? Consistency. How do you keep your lifestyle balanced? Take care of and nurture yourself. You cannot accomplish anything if you're unhealthy. Know what your priorities are. Balance does not entail cramming in every activity possible. Create an efficient mindset. Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time? At Parel Vallei and being the best teacher I can be for my learners.
SPLENDID SPIJKERS BY CHANEL BOWEN What was your first impression of PV? Parel Vallei is really organized and the child have a sense of self-pride and dignity that a teacher doesn’t have to teach. They’ve come into their own and it means that I can inspire children on another level because they already have a grounding. What are you looking forward to at PV? I’m looking forward to trying to bridge the gap between drama and the other cultures. In the past, I think drama was kept alone and it was held up on a shelf while the other cultures tried to survive. What I’d like to do is bridge that gap. An example would be to include the dance; we can give the dancing learners a time to shine. Same goes with the music and doing more with the music department. The poetry, the ones who write poetry, let that not be the end of their road, let them perform, let them come up in assembly… these are all just ways to bridge the gap. One of dreams and visions is to have a proper studio at Parel Vallei in which there is dance as a subject and a drama studio so that we have our own space to perform. I’m also looking forward to directing the best musical that Parel Vallei has ever seen next year and I’m looking forward to trying to check out the feasibility of having the musical every three years not every four years to give the learners more opportunities to be involved in that and to showcase their talents. I’m looking forward to drama as a subject: to expanding it and making it more interesting and fun for the learners know that I get to know them.
Talking of learners, what are the joys of teaching high school students? Teaching matrics – obviously the highest intellectual level – one really gets to inspire them and prepare them for the world out there which is a thinking world, a creative space. When you look at the way your exams are set, the highest order questions are applied questions, application, creation and critique. And that is so much fun for me because a lesson can go anywhere. This is what is so great about drama: making it real. It’s not about dusty books on shelves. It’s about the colour of life. Describe yourself in three words? Down to earth. Cats or dogs? Dogs
Early bird or night owl? Both Apple or Samsung? Samsung Favourite song? Ships in the Night by Mat Kearney – among a million others Favourite play? A Streetcar Named Desire Favourite movie? The Hours Anything you want to say to the students? They must be very grateful for what they have at Parel Vallei because I come from schools where there are so many other problems related to circumstance which is not their own fault entirely and our learners should just be grateful that they’re in a school with lots of structure, that they’ve got dedicated teachers around them and should be grateful for the fact that their parents are able to support them in this school, even if their home-life is not something that they wish it could be.. And there’s no problem too big that you can’t solve.

Mommen, is Parel Vallei se nuwe IT-onderwyser. Mnr. IT was altyd deel van sy lewe.

Me. What lies before us and what lies behind us, are small things compared to what lies within us. Dit is wat vir Me. Wessels inspireer. Me. As juf.
Mag Juffrou elke oomblik van Juffrou se loopbaan by Parel Vallei geniet!
BORRELENDE BROWN DEUR ZOË NAUDÉ Die voorste kantoor is 'n intimiderende plek vir enigiemand; of jy in die moeilikheid is, papierwerk uitsorteer of bloot 'n navraag doen. Alhoewel…
ALBERTS IN ACTION BY LUCIA NILAND
Where are you from? I grew up in the good old Transvaal and I resided in Heidelberg till I was fifteen. We moved to Roodepoort thereafter until I moved to the Western Cape in 2015. Why netball? I love that netball is a fast game requiring a high level of athleticism, balance and quick decision making. And it’s highly competitive! What was your position? Goal Defence How has your time at Parel Vallei been? Any special memories so far? It’s been awesome! I really love Parel Vallei’s culture. Of my two favourite moments, one was the athletics tour to Johannesburg. The interactions with the athletes and the spontaneous united supports during the 400m race when Lesley overtook in the last few meters. We screamed and shouted like a crazy bunch of people and although we were a small group, united as one our PV gees prevailed. The second was the goosebump inducing Blue Thread bash. It absolutely rocked! What is your goal for netball at Parel Vallei? To build on the netball foundation that Parel Vallei has already established, through skills development for both the coaches and the players. I want to establish a collaborative coaching culture to draw strength from the whole. I want to create a netball heartbeat and footprint that will keep making Parel Vallei proud. Favourite movie quote? Never stop looking for what’s not there - The Magic of Belle Isle Morgan Freeman or Liam Neeson? Morgan Freeman Scrambled or fried? Definitely fried Winter or Summer? Summer

INTERHOUSE ATHLETICS written by | Nina Andro photographs by | Asher Adams designed by | Pia Cloete
AND THE WINNER IS... Every year, Parel Vallei’s learners take to the pavilion on one special day to support our best runners, jumpers and throwers, to compete for both the athletics and spirit cup. Lead by a team of tireless cheerleaders, each team does their level-best to improve on last year’s efforts and prove their ATHLETIC AND SUPPORTING SUPERIORITY.
2018 was no different – the 26th of January dawned bright and clear, and as learners slowly filtered into the stands the buzz was audible. The design teams had been at work since 4.00 that morning to decorate the respective seating areas according to each house’s theme: Aberdeen – baseball, Stella – Stranger Things, and Nassau – horror. Weeks of preparation on the parts of the cheerleaders ensured their optogs ran smoothly, and each house succeeded in bringing their own flair to their kreet, whipped into a near frenzy by the incredible dance moves of their cheerleaders.
A beautiful sunny day ensued, with all athletes giving it their all and their supporters singing and screaming their hearts out. At the end of it
all, Stella took home the athletics trophy and Aberdeen the well-deserved spirit cup.
Interhouse athletics day serves as a reminder to all of us of what Parel Vallei is capable of, and that despite Interschools with HH and Strand being cancelled, PV’s school spirit is undiminished. It was a wonderful day filled with friendly competition, face paint, sun cream and pride, and it’s safe to say that everyone, teachers included, went home happily exhausted. Pearson: get ready. PV’s ready and coming for you!

JUST KEEP SWIMMING. The grade 8 gala was a ROARING ATMOSPHERE OF SPIRIT, PRIDE, AND EXCITEMENT. The grade 8’s stood tall and proud on the pavilion, despite only having been in Parel Vallei for a matter of two months!
The Junior Victor Ludorums are Ben Leysons and Tion Kleynhans. The Junior Victrix Ludorum is Caitlyn Schoeman. These junior bulldogs swam their very best in their first gala as Parel Valleiers! The grade 8 gala was honestly just astounding, the crowds cheered endlessly and the swimmers pushed themselves to do their very best and impressed their new judges. Anyone who did not take part or spectate surely missed out on this exciting event.
just the grade 8s and cheerleaders, I couldn’t imagine how the whole school would sound like altogether at the time. I was so impressed because everyone was cheering as loud as they could not only for their team but also for their friends. Everyone was so supportive!

FIETSRYFANATIKUS. Dis vroegoggend. Die wêreld is natgedou. Die vars oggendluggie suis verby haar ore. CARLA RY.
Wow!
Hoe word ‘n mens so goed? Soos Carla sê: “Sy is hardcore.”

STARTING THE SEASON. This year’s annual cricket match against Somerset College showed our first XI giving a STRONG PERFORMANCE and forcing College to work hard for a win at Ashes for the first time in a while.
Exceptional batting by Jannes De Necker, who hit 4 sixes in 1 over, one of which landed in College’s swimming pool and great fielding by Jan Rademan and Nicholas Hamilton, who both made incredible one-handed catches, resulted in an entertaining and overall quality game of cricket.

INTERHUIS SWEM.
verdien! Although there was the sad news of not having inter-schools, every student that attended the PV 2018 Inter-house gala enjoyed the event to their fullest and could not stop cheering! The swimmers were proud and talented as they swam their races! The Senior Victor Ludorum is Jarryd Konkol, who is in grade 8 but swims for the u/15 team. And last but not least, the Senior Victrix Ludorum is Isabella Booyens. PV worked together so well this year that we cannot wait for the next Inter-house gala to come!

DAY ZERO

INTERHOUSE DRAMA. Unlike Day Zero, the annual INTERHOUSE DRAMA had plenty of supporters! The three houses - Nassau, Stella and Aberdeen - presented Day Zero and the content was anything but dry. The event was a memorable one and shed light on our current situation - not that South Africa needs more light in this drought! From eager parents to excited students, the school hall was flooded. The plays were spectacularly written and directed by Parel Vallei students and each expressed different takes on Day Zero. WATWATTERWATER | BY REINATA VAN GREUNING - STELLA
The play takes off with a director - Ruan Pieterse - who is way too hard on himself and everybody else. The next scene introduces us to the cast of his play including the actor for Water, who is confused as to why he is wearing a tutu. This upsets the director and causes him to retire . I am done with amateurs. I am so done. So done, in fact that if I were a steak, I would have been charcoal by now. Most of the play is accompanied by the disembodied, soothing voice of the unappreciated tech team - Reinata Van Greuning. The rest of the play revolves around the actors playing Grond, Vuur, Wind, Water, Ekstra
nommer 1 and Ekstra nommer 3. Conflict is caused by a lack of direction and eventually the missing of Water. The cast feels the pressure in the absence of water which results in feuds and secretive meetings between Ekstra 1 and Ekstra 3 about the suspicious disappearance of Ekstra 2. During the entire play, the janitor listens in to all of the conversations and silently judges the cast while cleaning up their mess and in the end recites a monologue telling us to appreciate him because he is almost as unappreciated as the tech team. The play allows us to appreciate the presence of Water, janitors and of course, the tech team.

BLUE THREAD BASH

WHEN SONG AND SPORT COLLIDE. This is what happens when two of our school’s departments come together to create an evening with a greater cause. The BLUE THREAD BASH was a night to remember. The music was hearty, the stage setup blew expectations and the audience was filled with joyful noise.
Long before the melodies commenced, the fields were still bare and people were meandering around. By the time the stage lights had turned on, the field was packed, the music was in full swing and the little food stalls were surrounded with happy, hungry concert goers. The air was getting cooler and we were all able to just unwind and enjoy the peaceful, yet lively atmosphere. Community members - from students to teachers to parents and siblings - were enjoying themselves with a drink in the hand and light conversation going around. The murmur ceased when Jesse Jordan took to the stage and entranced us with his vocals. The real treat, though, was when two of our own teachers, Miss Murray and Mrs Swanepoel, performed. Their performance was absolutely amazing.
Everyone sat and enjoyed their picnic whilst chilling to PV’s super impressive Show Band. The Bash was a huge success. The music, the food, the scenery, the people… all these components created something magical. The Blue Thread Bash is a new initiative between sport and culture to fund school tours. This year the event funded the Holland hockey tour. Congratulations to all involved and we are really looking forward to the next Blue Thread Bash on the beautiful lawns of PV. The whole really is greater than the sum of its parts.
GERMAN EXCHANGE
written by | Chanel Bowen photographs by | Helene Viljoen designed by | Nina Andro
FOREIGN ADVENT URES. Over the December holidays, twenty PV students took a twelve-hour flight to the OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME: three weeks on exchange in Germany. From the 14th of December to the 5th of January they were immersed in German education, sightseeing and the bubbly feeling of being somewhere new. Here’s what some of them have to say about the trip...
What’s your impression of Germany now? NICOLA WHITE - I absolutely love it! The little town we stayed in, Memmingen, was my absolute favourite. The main town was beautiful and I loved walking through the streets and feeling very safe and taking the beautiful scenery of the wonderful buildings and all the new sites to see. HELENE VILJOEN - Germany is, in my eyes, the best place on earth. The culture is so different and unique, and the food is to die for! I recommend all of you guys to go and visit Germany in the future because you won’t be disappointed. JASON VAN WYK - Germany to me now is a lot more diverse and culturally interesting than what I first thought it was. A snowy dream. WALTER GUTZMANN - Cold yet vibrant, everybody seemed to have their own objective and stuck to it: it’s also a land of history and tradition and it seems that its citizens know this and are proud of it. CATHERINE BASSON - My first impression of Germany was that it was very cold, I always wanted to go overseas but I never knew that Germany could have temperatures in the minuses. NADIA DAMSELL - It was cold! Very cold, but I loved it. I missed home to be honest, but that feeling went away quickly when I realized how amazing Germany and the Germans are.
What’s one highlight of living with a host family? ZARA VERMEULEN - You learn their culture and way of living which isn’t possible without living with them: you form a bond, so you feel like a sibling. WALTER GUTZMANN - As cliché as it sounds, my host family accepted me, and I gained a new mother and a few brothers. MONIQUE BROWN - My host family was so cool, they were all really friendly and I felt welcome in their house. Hannah, my host, and I are almost the exact same person, so they paired us really well!
And one highlight of Germany? ANIKA LOOTS - Walking around and going wherever you wanted to go and feeling more independent. CATHERINE BASSON - I think the biggest highlight I experienced was snow and the different activities that come with it.
Other comments: I am very glad I had the opportunity to be able to have experienced an exchange trip. I always wished I could one day experience it and I wouldn’t change anything for the world. I encourage every person to take up the opportunity if they ever get the change of doing it. You will not regret it and you will have lifelong friendships and memories that will never be forgotten. - NICOLA WHITE. The German Exchange is definitely worth it - you make new friends from PV, too many new memories to count and countless nights where you get a stitch from laughing to hard! - ZARA VERMEULEN Being in a totally different environment, seeing things from a different perspective: it’s definitely life changing and a once in a lifetime opportunity and I’ll never forget it. - ANIKA LOOTS The German exchange was such an awesome opportunity and it really was life changing. I’ve gained so much independence and knowledge and knowledge about the big world out there. I’ll be back. Definitely. - NADIA DAMSELL
Describe the exchange in one word: Nicola White: Unbelievable Catherine Bason: Eye-opening
Zara Vermeulen: Not one word, but it is a once in a lifetime experience. Anika Loots: Indescribable Helene Viljoen: Wow! Nadia Damsell: One word? That’s impossible. Jason van Wyk: Whimsical Walter Gutzmann: Extravagant Monique Brown: AMAZING
It was cold! Very cold, but I loved it.

Dié projek is baie spesiaal.
‘N SKEMERKONSERT

MUSIEK AAN DIE VOET VAN HELDERBERG. Sondag, 28 Januarie, het ons eie PAREL VALLEI SHOW BAND geopen vir Coda Africa in ‘n skemerkonsert by die Helderberg Natuurreservaat.

Force them to spend time together for four months and they’ll create something as mind-blowing, hilarious and bizarre as ROCKET BOYS.
Rocket Boys is a play written and directed by our very own head of culture, Miss Yanou Pienaar, with the sound and lighting done by Wicus Louw and stars Liam Walsh and Jordyn Linklater, all ex-Parel Vallei students and acclaimed theatre folk. The plot follows the actors as they play themselves, struggling actors performing Macbeth until they come to the realisation that they might be the sole survivors on earth. What follows is an hour and a half of pants-less scenes, conversations with God and slam poetry in fur coats, all in all an emotional rollercoaster that will have you in stiches in one moment, then throw you into a shockingly dark abyss the

THE FIRST TREE written by | Cassandra Velema photographs | Google designed by | Paige Bowen
A GAME REVIEW. Developed by DAVID WEHLE
The First Tree is a beautiful, third-person exploration game based around two parallel stories: a fox trying to find her family, and a son reconnecting with his estranged father in Alaska. Uncover artefacts from the son's life as he becomes intertwined in the fox’s journey towards The First Tree. Players take control of the fox on a beautiful journey that climaxes at the source of life, and perhaps results in an understanding of death. For fans of gorgeous games like Journey, Firewatch, and Shelter, the game is certainly not a fox simulator, but an emotional, intimate story by a one-man team with an unforgettable ending. The game is a must-have for fans of a warm, heartfelt story. Featuring a stunning soundtrack by acclaimed artists like Message to Bears, Lowercase Noises, and Josh Kramer, the short game - about an hour and a half - is a storyline-focussed game with some light puzzle solving and platforming. The First Tree is a game with amazing graphics and an intriguing storyline that will be worth the cash. Be sure to have the graphics capacity required given on the game store page, so you can experience the game’s full beauty.

VUIL WASGOED.

SUMMER HOUSE WITH SWIMMING POOL. By HERMAN KOCH | Takealot.com R179
On the surface - Summer House with Swimming Pool seems like an excellent read for anyone in the Western Cape in 2018. Swimming? Count me in. Relaxation at a Summer House? For SURE. Yet Herman Koch’s novel is not for those who want a calming read. No, it is filled with shocking twists and mystery. Can we even trust our protagonist? Koch’s story centres on a doctor and father of two daughters, Marc Schlosser. When one of Marc’s patients, the famous actor Ralph Meier, dies because of a medical mistake, Mark is suspected by Ralph’s wife and the Board of Medical Examiners as he tries to hide the truth. Marc does not seem
the slightest bit upset that Ralph is dead. After the events that took place at Ralph’s Summer House the previous year involving both families come to light, the Mark’s motive becomes stronger - but were there more people ready to see Ralph in a grave? Is Marc guilty? Koch keeps us on the edge of our seats. Is this a family drama or a crime drama? Probably both, but it could be considered a medical drama too. Is this going to keep me up until 4 am turning pages? Definitely.

PART TIME JOBS...

AND WHY YOU NEED ONE. Are you TIRED OF BEING BROKE? Do you want to be able to afford those Jeremy Loops tickets or indulge in a treat-yo-self moment and not be racked by post splurge guilt? The answer to all of the above should be yes and fortunately all of this is very possible. So here’s a wild thought get a job!
A surprisingly large number of our very own Parel Vallei grade 10,11 and 12s have already become fully fledged, functioning members of society. Getting a job not only allows for blissful bout of independence but gives us all a chance to escape the student body most of us have known since foetuses- ah the wonders of Somerset West. Your hours are probably going to be shoddy – the pay too – but whether you are a waitron, a runner, a mechanic or a surf instructor, you have something. You applied and they picked you. It’s incredibly empowering to say the least and gives one a glimpse of the working world we’ll all be stepping into after the flash that is high school. The majority of the other staff members turn out to be brilliant themselves and full of surprises and the people working beside you – whether it be making fun of difficult customers or accidently messing with the floor playlist and blasting some classic Post Malone – make work something to look forward to instead of a chore. Not to mention the perks: free goodies and discounts. Soon you’re just as excited about them as Brenda, the suburban soccer mom, is about half off on humus. In addition to learning more about what interests you, earning some extra money on the side and maybe figuring out the direction in
which you want to take your life, you also learn the value of money, an invaluable lesson in this day and age. Mom and Dad are not going to be paying for everything forever, darling. Before it was all, “Mom I need some new clothes,” and BAM. A new wardrobe. Well, no more my friend. Now, it becomes trying everything on at least three times just in case you could maybe, just maybe, live without it. And was it even a successful shopping trip if you didn’t walk the mall no fewer than twice? Instead of thinking in terms of money, one begins to think in terms of time. Every rand you hand over is a minute of your shift that you spent slaving away. It hurts. But, on the other hand, the things you deem worth spending money on become just that – worth it. So get out there. Try something new and boost your confidence. Apply everywhere and if you get rejected, so what? Their loss. At least you’re doing something. And you can definitely be proud of that.

CRISPR. A genetic engineering tool that may very well ne the answer to curing many terminal diseases. Du Toit Spies shares his knowledge on CRISPR: clusters of regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats or in layman's terms: A SPECIALISED PIECE OF DNA IN A BACTERIUM MADE OF REPETITIVE PIECES OF DNA BITS.
To understand CRISPR, one must first understand how viruses work. Viruses are semiliving biological agents consisting of two or three parts: genes, proteins to protect these genes, and sometimes a coating of fat to help certain viruses invade cells. Viruses cannot reproduce on their own, and therefore require other cells to form more of them. They do this by inserting their own genes into other cells, and these cells then mistake the inserted code for their own DNA, and then use their own internal mechanisms to create more copies of the virus that invaded them. At a certain point, the number of produced viruses accumulate to such an extent that the cell bursts and releases the newly formed viruses to infect new cells.
Scientists turned this into a tool for editing genes, by replacing the DNA from viruses with the piece of DNA they want to edit into the genome - sequence of genes - of the target organisms. This is then recognised by an enzyme called CAS9, which uses this code to identify a suitable part of the target’s original DNA sequence to replace with a new piece of DNA which is more desirable. Due to this process arising solely from evolution over possibly millions of years, it has adapted to be precise and very averse to errors. Essentially, the enzyme performs a cut-and-paste function on the genome of the cell, by cutting the DNA to be removed and pasting the new and desired DNA into the genome.
CRISPR is shorthand for Clusters of Regularly Interspaced Short Ralindromic Repeats, which in English means it is a specialised piece of DNA in a bacterium - singular form of bacteria made of repetitive pieces of DNA bits. These bits are pieces of DNA from viruses that have previously tried to invade the bacterium, which is incorporated into its own DNA with an enzyme, which is merely a biomolecule which speeds up reactions. The bacterium then uses these parts of its DNA to recognise DNA from viruses that will invade it in the future.
CRISPR has already been used by scientists to render genes in human cells inoperative, and to turn fungi of the genus Candida - aka yeast infections - to be suitable for production of biofuels. It has been used to remove HIV from a living organism, albeit from mice, and to slow the growth of cancer cells. They have also, quite strangely, encoded a video into the DNA of an E. Coli bacterium. For those of you who are wondering what video this was, it is essentially a GIF file of a person riding on horseback, because why not.
However, despite all the amazing advances made with this technology, there are serious questions of morality surrounding this technology. The first issue is that this technology is still too unpredictable to be used in a way that is safe for use on humans. This is because despite CRISPR’s natural precision, its use after it has been modified to be able to be used on humans can have unforeseen side effects. A recent example of this was when Chinese researchers changed the genes of 54 human embryos to remove a defective gene. Of these 54 embryos, only 4 exhibited the desired genetic changes, and all 4 of these embryos showed mutations that were not desired and where CRISPR placed the desired genes in the wrong places. These embryos were therefore not viable, and therefore the use of this technique suffered a serious blow. Another serious side effect is mosaicism, where some cells carry the original gene and other cells carry the genes that were inserted via CRISPR. In 2015, a congress gathered in Washington, D.C. decided to place a moratorium on the use of CRISPR on human cells. Hence we went for a short term solution to these moral questions and thereby we avoided more difficult questions that will undoubtedly be raised again when this short-term moratorium is lifted. One such ethical conundrum is over informed consent, and the line of reasoning for this argument is that since the proposed genetic changes only effect unborn foetuses and future generations, but that these people are unable to give their consent for such a procedure. Another informed consent question is whether parents can truly consent to such a procedure that can be performed on their future children, since possible complications are inherent in such a complex procedure. Another major concern is that the benefits of CRISPR will only be available to the wealthy. This will increase existing disparities in situations such as access to healthcare. Another
major worry is that this can lead to the separation of humans based on the engineered state of their genome. While these ethical quandaries will keep humans busy for some time, it is worthwhile to reflect that it is within our grasp to remove ailments such as cystic fibrosis and Huntington’s disease, which kill thousands of people each year. Finally we will have a vaccine against these diseases that have for so long plagued humankind.

TONY MCPHERSON. Two years ago, Tony started MCPHERSON CONSULTANCY, a social media marketing and management company, and its success resulted in him being named the runner up for Young Entrepreneur of the Year, 2017, in the Small and Medium Enterprises Association of South Africa's annual awards. Tony has used his power and influence to do some incredible good deeds including: starting a campaign that led to a jam-packed, 26-link truck delivering much-needed donations to the Knysna fire victims as well as, collaborating with his younger brother Keegan, who is currently in grade 8, to impact the lives of homeless people in Somerset West.
I'm sure you faced a few challenges or long processes you had to go through to get your business up and running. Tell me about those and how you overcame them. I chose to do business with people who believe in me because if people believe in you they will invest in you. That made my business achievement so much easier. I reached goals quicker making my start up process much easier than expected.
we have opposite personalities which often clash but he keeps me grounded. I think its something very special to be able to share a love and passion for humanitarians with him.
How do you cope with the responsibility of managing, marketing and growing a business with the added stress and commitments of high school? Starting 2018, I had a different approach. I decided You've done remarkable things not to be busy but to be laser to help the community using focused. This year, I said to your company as a platform. myself: What are the 5 things How and why did you get that will make this year the involved in community work, best year of my life. I decided what inspired you to do those what it was and then decided specific deeds and what is to put all my focus on it. I live a it like working with your very demanding life, with a brother? Because of my access stressful schedule that to social media I am made sometimes burns me out, but I aware of the disasters out love every minute of it. Splitting there, as an entrepreneur I myself between spending time cannot ignore this need, I had with my family - who are my to step in and make a number one priority - work and difference, that’s what got me school is very trying and often started with community work. leaves me working till 3 am in Its amazing to be working with the morning. I am a person that my brother on some projects, can’t sit still, I always have to
be busy and I have found a way to do this and love doing it at the same time . How did you get involved in the SMESA awards, what was the experience like for you? Do you plan on entering similar awards and competitions in the future? I did not enter myself, I was nominated by someone who I choose to believe is someone who believes in me. The experience of being nominated for a business award at 17, especially an Entrepreneur of the Year award is humbling and the whole journey was indescribable. Getting the phone call informing me of the nomination to getting the official award result letter hand delivered to me was unbelievable. I would have never thought I could achieve something like this. I have been nominated for my second business award, this award is from the Youth Business Chamber.
I am once again so grateful that this has been made possible for me. I am looking forward to experiencing the whole experience over again. What advice do you have for other young entrepreneurs keen to make an impact? Get out of your comfort zone, because in that space there is no growth.
What does the future hold for Tony McPherson? From a business perspective, 2018 is going to be a tough year as I have set myself many high goals. Hopefully placing in the Youth Business Chamber Awards for 2018 and going to New York in November for a Youth Entrepreneurial Conference. From a personal
perspective, I would like to go study either Business or Corporate Law and then obtain my post-grad degree abroad.

‘ N K Y K I E N A O N S N U WE P R E S I D E N T .

the boy who flew...
We do not weep for the boy who fell But for those left on the rocky precipice We do not mourn his departure But rather his absence We dread the day the wind no longer whispers ragged snatches of memory to us And we no longer see his smiles amongst the winking stars The day we accept our questions have no answers Why him? Why then? Why not us? And relinquish our hatred for the chaos of chance Most importantly, we do not weep for the boy who feel because for that split-second
That immeasurable moment He was the boy who flew

i want You happy
i want Your smile sincere, Your soul filled with glee, Your head thinking happy thoughts in a pessimist society.
i want You to love, do things that make Your day, dream of only lovely times when the sun has walked away.
only then, can i be eased; Your wild heart: roaming free‌ the request i have is a simple one: i want You happy.
