It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Cue festive music playing on full blast in Checkers because let’s face it, it’s technically been Christmas since October 31st . Term four is the shortest term of the year, and we’ve certainly felt it. The three weeks of schoolwork we had, whizzed by and then we were thrown headfirst into the exams. It’s been rough, but we made it to the other side. I hope you achieved the marks you hoped for and that your hard work was rewarded. If not, let that disappointment inspire you to go bigger and work harder next term. In this issue we say goodbye to some beloved teachers and hello to unfamiliar faces, introduce the Blue Thread team of 2019, give you an inside scoop into the Academic Achiever’s Tour to America and a whole lot more. We know you’ve been busy, so we’ve even included a Christmas wrapping paper DIY to help you cover your last minute gifts! You’re welcome. Matrics of 2018, you did it! Quite frankly, I can’t imagine not seeing you all in the corridors next year, or smiling at familiar faces in assembly. The world is your oyster and I can’t wait to see what wild adventures life brings you. To my Grade 11 family, we are so close. The next time we walk through the school gates, it will be as Matrics. We hear Mr Schenck say it every year, but Grade 12 really does go by in a blue flash. Don’t let any opportunity slip through your fingers and make our last year one to remember. These holidays, while short, are well deserved. Have fun, get a tan and make some incredible memories. Stay safe, the Blue Thread will be here to welcome you back next term.
Your Editor in Chief,
Lucia Niland

MATRIC BALL 2018 a night at the palace of the gods
They fell flaming from the sky, the Gods. Skin glowing with an otherworldly radiance. They’ve walked among us for many a year, and now their kingdom has summoned their return. But before they depart, They Shall Feast
Hello & Goodbye
FAREWELL MRS O’CONNOR The English teacher no one will forget I’m going to be honest, so don ’t judge me. While I was trying to write this article I stared at a blank page for what felt like ages. I didn ’t know what to write; I literally had no words to express how I felt about Mrs O'Connor leaving. Which, now that I think about it, is quite ironic considering that she is a language teacher.
D
uring the past four years we’ve had the privilege of getting to know this exciting and passionate person and it’s with great sorrow that we have to say goodbye. I’m aware that my class isn’t always the easiest to deal with but somehow Mrs O’Connor managed to put up with us almost every day of the week. We learnt so much more than just how to answer questions to our next test papers and for that we’ll always be grateful. She said that she loved reading Goodnight Mister Tom with the
Grade 8’s and studying Life of Pi with her Matrics, although she’s not sure whether they enjoyed the long sections at sea, but then, neither did Pi— a prime example of her witty humour, which we will truly miss. She gave us so much wisdom and knowledge; even her favourite quote by Margaret Mead, is something to live by: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
writer Annegrethe Scholtz | photographer Caitlin de Lange | designer Diana Millard
When I asked her what her fondest memories at PV were, she responded, “Spoken Word Mic Night— because of the many talented writers who shone that night as they shared their souls with the world” as well as the time the matric class drew and then pasted
smiley faces on all of the posters in her classroom because they could see she was feeling sad. The fact that she left the smiley face on Shakespeare’s face for many weeks, just because it made her laugh, further proves what an extraordinary person she is.
Thank you for your endless kindness, consideration and love Mrs O’Connor.
AU REVOIR ALLERS We bid farewell to our favourite maths teacher We are sad to say that our one and only Mrs Allers is leaving Parel Vallei. Here is a goodbye to eight amazing years, a classroom that feels like a sauna, friends made throughout the years and students whose math marks improved drastically.
M
rs Allers is resigning because she would like to spend more time with her family and husband and although she won’t be teaching at PV anymore, she will be giving extra math lessons outside of the school; just around the corner if needed. Mrs Allers describes her first day at school as fantastic. The staff were very welcoming, and she immediately felt part of the PV family. Two of her most cherished memories are having short snatches of conversations with our ex principal Mr Gouws and having been able to help a matric class, who had a poor class average, to increase their
average. This was one of her greatest achievements, being able to help those students to reach their potential. Mrs Allers loves everything about PV: her colleagues, the students and especially her group of math staff. She is an amazing person and a fantastic math teacher. She always made an effort not to fall behind on work and to help the people who were struggling to the best of their abilities. There is no doubt that Mrs Allers will never be forgotten and that she will be missed by everyone she has taught.
writer Jade Coetzee | photographer Caitlin de Lange | designer Lucia Niland
Her inspiring Christian devotions before every exam never failed to motivate and move her students. Mrs Allers was a constant and reassuring figure in the hearts of every Parel Vallei learner that she came across.
LUCKHOFF’S LEGACY Her passion for her students and subjects won’t be forgotten. The time has come to bid the lovely Mrs Luckhoff farewell. It has been an honour and privilege to have had the opportunity to work alongside this wonder woman in class and kitchen. With heavy hearts we wish you the best of luck on your journey ahead.
W
hat an amazing time it has been! I can’t believe 8 years have come and gone and it is time for me to get off the PV bullet train. PV reminds me of the bullet trains you get in Japan, world class— excellence and things move at the speed of light. You must hang on and enjoy the journey. My journey at PV started in 2011, fresh off the boat from Scotland. When I started here my accent was thick, heavy and the staff and learners were baffled by this Afrikaans speaking Scottish lady. I was welcomed with open arms and the transition from a Scottish school to a South African
school was made so easy with such amazing staff and pupils. I have memories of laughter, fun and many, many more ingredients of fun and happiness. Today when I say totsiens my Scottish is barely audible and the South African is strong. Every pupil that I had the privilege to teach has a special place in my heart. I am very sad to leave my Consumers Studies classes— they are SUPER special to me. I know you all will make me proud and I will keep track of you. Consumer Studies is the best! Mrs de Villiers and Mrs Opperman— what a dream team. My heart is sad to leave such lovely ladies behind. I wish I could take my whole department with me.
writer Mrs Luckhoff Herself photographer Caitlin de Lange | designer Lucia Niland
It is time for me to get off the bullet train— my station has arrived. It is very difficult but I
know the train will depart and keep being a world-class train journey for you all.
Enjoy every second and embrace every opportunity you get. PV you will be missed and will be a part of my heart forever. Love from Mrs L
waarde van ‘n goeie onderwyser of lektor, ‘n groot rol.
Wie is juffrou se gunstelling geskiedkundige figuur? As ek nou ‘n goeie een moet kies wat nou nie duisende mense vermoor het nie, sal dit nou wees soos die boere kommando’s soos De la rey, Generaal Louis Botha, De Wet, ensovoorts. Wat is juffrou se gunstelling film? Lord of the Rings.
Culture
JAMMING AT GRANDWEST Magic music In the arena, the crowd had been roaring from morning to night. Backstage, Parel Vallei students were waiting to be called onto the stage. The adrenaline was high, and you could feel the electricity running through each individual. As Parel Vallei stepped onto the stage, all the shakes and nerves could be seen - that is until that very first chord was played, and that was when the music magic struck Grandwest Arena.
writer Rosalind Mitchell | photographer Caro Botha | designer Charlotte Lay
T
he High School Jam is a live performing arts competition. Ten schools compete at the Grandwest arena in front of more than five thousand people for a chance to win R50 000 towards the winning school’s performing arts and culture department. It’s purely about giving someone the spotlight to be a performer. The High School Jam is a place where people are brought together for the same thing: the love of music and performance. “It is a great opportunity to be heard and seen,” said Nazranah Osman. This year, Parel Vallei took a whole new approach to the High School Jam. In a moment of genius Mr Combe suggested the idea of the performers writing their own songs for this year’s jam. Soon people began handing him their own songs. Monica Goldbach said that it was a leap into the unknown and a scary move because none of them knew how the audience and the judges would react. However, they decided to do it anyway, as they weren’t afraid of judgement for being themselves. Ronan Wademan said that being able to write good music is one of the ultimate goals as a musician, it’s also something that no other school has attempted, so why not go for it? It was a huge first time success.
The talented artists that won awards this year were Hanju Potgieter for best guitarist and Ian Marasigan and Minsoek Kim for best electronic piece. The HSJ team also recorded all the original songs in studio. Currently they are in the process of copyrighting them in order for some of their songs to be featured on KFM Radio Station.
You can’t just go on stage and wing something as exciting and as big as this, it takes a lot of dedication and hard work to get perfection. Many hours, days and months went into practice. The team wanted perfection and were prepared to practice until they got it. Mia van der Merwe said, “High School Jam is a lot of hard work, it’s not easy, it’s a lot of hours, it’s a big commitment but in the end the experience is incredible.”
“Being on stage kind of scares you but excites you at the same time, when the music starts and you start to do whatever it is you are supposed to do, you feel a part of a huge family,’ said Skye Devy. Ronan Wademan said that being on stage is one of the best feelings he has ever had. You might be nervous for the whole day and even the day before but once you get in front of the crowd everything else goes away and you can just enjoy it. It’s not just the performers that feel the music in their souls but also the audience members. Chelsea Pregnolato said that it was phenomenal. Just seeing all her friends on stage, playing songs that they had written, put a huge smile on her face. It made her realise how much talent there really is in the music department, it’s definitely something to be appreciated more.
To anyone who would like to join HSJ next year, don’t hold back. Whether it’s in your audition or when you are preforming on stage, don’t be afraid to show who you are. You will be welcomed with open arms. The goal for next year is to make everything bigger and better, with more songwriters, more vocalists and ten times more stage presence. The High School Jam will not know what hit them. So be sure to go for your audition next year. We are looking for our next female and male divas, as Mr Combe would say.

SOMETHING SWEETER THAN CUPCAKES Interact Helping one person might not change the whole world, but it could change the world for one person.
E
Michelle Cousins, President of Interact
very Friday there are these lovely people who sell cupcakes at break and most of you probably haven’t put any thought to it, other than being fixated on the sweet taste of your treat. You may have heard them saying something about it being for a good cause and then proceeded to buy another one, you know, for the kids, not as an excuse to have more cupcakes. All the proceeds from the cupcake sales go to the Gabriella Centre, a care facility for children and young adults with profound physical and intellectual disabilities. This is made possible by none other than the Interact committee. The Interact committee has been tirelessly working for our community, whether it was visiting the Animal Welfare Centre, taking part in various drives or painting a jungle
gym for an underprivileged school and they did it all with a smile. You’re probably starting to see that it isn’t just their cupcakes that are sweet. I’m sure by now you all know about the Santa Shoebox Project of this term. I would like to say thank you, on behalf of Michelle Cousins — the president of the Interact committee — to every single person who contributed, ranging from wrapping a box to buying a tube of toothpaste. You are making someone else’s life better and that’s the best thing you can do. I’m so proud to have been given the opportunity to see how the school came together to collect a total of 124 boxes. That means that we have given 124 children a gift on Christmas, which might be the only present they receive. If that’s not enough to warm your heart, I don’t know what is.
Academics
THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVERS TOUR An unforgettable tour to the states During the September holidays, 10 Parel Vallei learners joined a group of 400 students and teachers from all over South Africa on the adventure of a lifetime: an Academic Achievers tour to America.
T
he tour group left Cape Town International Airport on 27 September on a nearly 25 hour plane ride to visit Boston, New York and Washington for ten days, and see what the States has to offer in terms of universities, museums and historical sites. It all started in Boston, Massachusetts, where everyone was stunned by the beautiful city and gained a greater appreciation for historical architecture. The group also had the privilege of touring the world-famous Harvard and MIT campuses, and seeing the breath-taking facilities. On the road to New York, we stopped at Yale University for a fascinating tour of the grounds and libraries. The first stop in New York was of course, Times Square, and it is every bit as beautiful and electrifying as it looks in the movies. In NYC, we visited Columbia University, the Museum of Natural History, Central Park, and saw the Big Apple in all its glory from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building. Some students opted to watch a Broadway musical that evening, while the rest of the group enjoyed some free time in Times Square. The next day featured a ferry ride to the Statue of Liberty, and a heartbreaking visit to the 9/11 memorial and museum. Before heading for Washington D.C., we made a quick stop at Princeton University for another campus tour and a few
hilarious stories of mischief and student pranks at the university.
When we reached Washington, we toured the US Capitol Building, which is known as the home of the United States congress, and plays a vital role in American government. The building itself is beautifully designed and filled with gorgeous statues and paintings. The tour group also visited the “Newseum” , a museum dedicated to journalism and its importance in American and international history. The visit to Washington was concluded with a day trip to the famous Smithsonian museums, which contained precious artefacts from various subjects, ranging from space travel, to geology, to musical history. Throughout the trip, the students were offered once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to attend lectures by professionals at the top of their fields. The topics included: Integrative cancer research, cosmology and the study of galaxies, and social media influencers. The lectures were interesting and exposed us to topics we would not have been exposed to otherwise. This tour was not only educational and fascinating, but offered the opportunity to meet new friends and make memories. Whether it’s late night visits to Target, or playing Bean-Boozled on the bus, we will carry these moments with us for the rest of our lives, and I’d like to thank every single person who made our time in America so amazing.

OUR SURFING SENSATION Daring PV learner takes on world championships Daniel Neetling, in Grade 11, recently made the Cape Winelands Team. He was chosen to participate at the South African Junior Championship during the holiday. Hosted in Jeffery’s Bay, this 7-day event had more than 200 of the best junior surfers in South Africa taking part. We are proud to say that Daniel was amongst those selected.
How long have you been surfing?
Since grade 8, so about 4 years. When did you realise you had a passion for surfing? After I caught my first proper wave, I was hooked! From there, I had to surf as much as possible. How did you learn to surf? After my dad bought me a board, I taught myself how to surf. What does it feel like to be out in the waves?
Surfing is always a special experience and being out in the sea always leaves me in awe of nature.
writer Tumba Ntsilumbu | photographers Varius | designer Lucia Niland
Who do you look up to as a surfer?
Mike Thompson, this guy rips! He is also an amazing Christian with a heart of gold! Did you ever imagine making it to SA Champs? This was my first year doing trials so making the team didn’t seem doable. How did it feel? I was beyond stoked! I couldn’t wipe that smile off my face. What is your biggest motivation? My biggest motivation is to constantly keep improving and challenge myself. Do you see yourself pursuing a career in surfing? I would not see a career in competing. But going on surf trips and getting paid would be sick! Do you have any tips for beginners or people out there who are too scared to try surfing? For beginners, always be respectful in the water. Also, make sure you understand the rules and surf somewhere that would suit your level. For those who are too scared to surf, my advice would be get over it. Jaws is only a movie!
Daniel’s future in surfing looks bright, and we can ’t wait to see where it leads next

CAUSE THE EARTH WITHOUT ART
STRIKDASSE VIR STUDENTE, KLEINKINDERS EN JA, SELFS KATTE Of jy nou groot, klein, kleurvolle of ‘n vaal persoon is, in Leandri Herrewyn se strikdasversameling is daar iets vir almal.

POLITICS WITH NATASHA Why are women so mad about Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation?
“I believe Christine, I still believe Anita, ” read the posters of the determined women and men at the #BelieveSurvivors protest against the nomination of soon -to-be Supreme Court Justice, Brett Kavanaugh. America has had enough.
o
n the 9th of July 2018 Donald Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh as his nomination for the next Supreme Court Justice. At the end of that same month, respected psychology professor Christine Blasey Ford sent a letter to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, informing her of her sexual assault at the hands of Brett Kavanaugh when they were in high school.
After that, things only escalated: two more woman came forward with their allegations of sexual assault and misconduct. Ford testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee about the night she alleges he pinned her down,
closed her mouth and attempted to undress her whilst his friends watched. Moreover, Trump issued numerous statements in support of Kavanaugh in spite of everything. Brett Kavanaugh was sworn in as Associate Justice at the White House on the 7th of October after the senate vote took place. Kavanaugh is a major threat to women’s rights, having previously ruled in favour of abortion restrictions and even AGAINST birth control. Therefore it isn’t fair to ask why so many women strongly oppose him and keep brandishing their banners of “Nominate a justice for all”.
SNOEPIE KIDS Die geheime rede agter jou glimlag Net mooi almal koop daagliks hul pastei of 'toastie' by die snoepie.

Summer essentials
writer Natasha Scmidt | photographer Asher Adams | designer Michelle Lourens
It’s all about hydration. Remember, we live in the Western Cape, which means that summer is synonymous with dry season. Lucky for us, we live near some amazing summer attractions like botanical gardens and beaches, so make sure you’re not missing any of these summer essentials. Let’s be honest, going full sneaker isn’t always an option in 30 degree weather. Cotton On has the best options for flip flops and sandals on a budget, but if you have the money to invest, then Havanas from Edgars or Birkenstocks might be the way to go. A Birkenstock store recently opened at Somerset Mall - across from Edgars.
… Be it tanning or swimming, everyone needs at least one good bathing suit. As a wise man once said: Suit up!
There’s no way around it. Get yourself a reusable bottle and stop using those flimsy plastic ones. They don’t just heat up faster, they poison your water. If you get a plastic bottle, make sure it’s BPA free.
A peel off mask from Dis-Chem is always a good idea. There are different kinds for all skin types. As for the hair mask: you can make a hair mask with one part honey and two parts coconut oil in the comfort of your kitchen. Leave it in for 20 minutes before you wash your hair to keep your hair healthy and hydrated.
A cool towel is nice to have for summer if you’ll be using it a lot.
There are a number of good lip balms out there, but there are also really bad ones that’ll make your lips drier in the long-term. I’d recommend Vaseline Lip Therapy or any Softlips products. You need to find the right one for your skin type. For oily skin, try Neutrogena’s oil-free moisturiser. Garnier and Yves Rocher are also highly recommended by dermatologists.
Squinting all the time isn’t cool. You need at least one pair of sunglasses you can count on. Another thing that’s not cool: skin cancer. Even if you want a tan, when you’re going to be in the sun for an extended period of time wear at least SPF 15.
We all know the familiar sound of mosquitoes at 2 am but it doesn’t have to be like this. A bug repellent that works well is the Raid Mosquito Killer wall plug.
groot, afgeskeepte muur waarop groen plante rank.

HOLY DOUGH R es t a u r a n t r e v i e w Another one bites the crust.
I
f I imagined being in Italy for a day, eating authentic Italian pizza, where the cheese just melts in your mouth; Holy Dough is where I would go to get the goods. Located in Twin Palm Centre, on Altena Road in Strand, Holy Dough is a takeaway, wood-fired pizza restaurant that serves tasty and unique flavour combos as well as the great classics. Created in true Neapolitan style their unbelievably soft dough is hand rolled by the bakers and placed in
their brick oven. Prices range from R59.00 for a Margherita to R125.00 for a King - mozzarella, sirloin, cherry tomato, rocket and parmesan pizza. Holy Dough is a hidden gem with jewels for staff: friendly, energetic and hard-working. They are open every day from 12pm – 9pm except on Sundays, when they close at 8pm. Be sure to grab yourself a deliciously cheesy pizza at Holy Dough.
CARRY ON Where are the Potterheads? If the Harry Potter franchise was the foundation of your childhood, then you’re going to love Ca rry On by Rainbow Rowell.
C
arry On is a ghost story, love story, and a mystery. It has just as much kissing and talking as you'd expect from a Rainbow Rowell novel but far, far more monsters. The plot involves a school for children with magical abilities, a very powerful and heroic headmaster and a famous Chosen One with loyal friends and a captivating love interest. Sounds familiar, right? Not quite; Carry On is a book with more twists and turns than the Sani Pass. “Simon Snow is the worst Chosen One who’s ever been chosen.” At least that’s what his roommate, Baz, says. Baz might be an evil vampire and a complete git, but he’s probably right. Half the time, Simon can’t even make his wand work, and the other half, he sets something on fire. His mentor is avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there is a magiceating monster running around wearing Simon’s face. It’s their last year at the Watford School of Magicks and Simon’s infuriating nemesis didn’t even bother to show up.
The Chosen One is usually the best and gets the girl but not in this novel though. This story delves into the mind of an unprepared and selfconscious teenage boy, who is forced into a world of magic, without his consent. The novel explores the complexity of the typical teenager; even the spells are based on our pop culture. It alludes to must-discuss topics of modern times, such as politics, where as the main plot includes a fight between two different ideologies in the magical world, LGBT themes, diversity in literature and race equality. It took me only one chapter to become a hard-core fangirl. The dialogue flows seamlessly and the chapters vary from short and powerful to long and sublime. The entire story is so relatable to most teenagers despite being set in a fantasy world with dragons and nymphs. I recommend this book to everyone, even if fantasy is not your cup of pumpkin juice.

WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS Make lemon cordial Yo u w i l l n e e d - 2 Lemons - 2 Cups of Water - 2 Cups of White Sugar
Method 1. Zest the lemons and set zest aside for later. 2. Juice both lemons. 3. Bring the sugar and water to boil in a medium saucepan. 4. Boil until the sugar has completely dissolved and then remove from heat.
5. Let the sugar water cool completely . 6. Add the lemon juice and zest. Your lemon cordial is now ready and can be served with one-part cordial to three-parts water. Enjoy with ice and fresh mint.
Nice bowls You will need two different sized plastic bowls, water and citrus or flowers. Layer the bigger bowl with sliced lemons or flowers of your choice. Then, place the smaller bowl in the big bowl and weigh it down with ice blocks. Afterwards, pour the water into your bigger bowl until it is filled to the brim. Place the bowl in a freezer overnight. When you need the bowl, use hot water, remove the ice bowl from in-between the two bowls. ViolĂ

CHRISTMAS DIY To wrap up the term The holidays are just around the corner and that means that Christmas is too. It’s better to give than to receive but nowadays presents are becoming less and less sentimental. Give from the heart, with your own, custom -made wrapping paper. Here is a recipe to turn boring, old brown paper into your own wrapping paper:
Yo u w i l l n e e d : - Pencil
- Cardboard
- Paint
- A roll of brown paper
- Scissors
Steps: 1. Take a piece of cardboard and draw the shape that you want to use as your stencil. Go for something simple, like a Christmas tree or present. 2. Use your pencil to make a small hole in the middle of your shape, then use your scissor to cut the shape out. 3. Place the cardboard anywhere you like on the brown paper and paint over your stencil. Make sure that your stencil remains still while you are painting. 4. Repeat step 3 until you are satisfied with your product.
