Letter from the Editor

Term three is notorious for being the longest term in the school year. Painfully so. We’ve had tests, orals, essays and a host of other assessments thrown at us from every direction, while simultaneously having to juggle sports and other extra-murals. But we did it. We survived, and it’s smooth sailing for the next couple of weeks. We’ve had a term of non-stop highs. From the excitement of hosting Pearson, drama season, Founder’s day, the highly anticipated announcement of the new prefect body for 2019, a stellar winter sport season and finally, auditions for the Musical. PV has undergone a metamorphosis over the past ten weeks. We’ve pushed boundaries, broken records and achieved things we could only have previously dreamed of. All expectations have been blown out of the water, and I could not be more proud to publish an issue that is able to shine light on that. To my dream team, you are miracle workers - each and every one of you. Leading a group of people as strong as those who make up the Blue Thread is an immense honour and I cannot thank you enough for making my first issue as Editor in Chief one for the books. Olivia, my comic relief. Long hours would be twice as hard without you. Matrics, you persevered and conquered your prelims. The worst is behind you and we back you all the way - you’ve got this. Rest this holiday, give your soul some time to catch up and come back safe. Blue Thread will be here to welcome you back next term.

Your Editor in Chief,

Lucia Niland

rom the moment the first buses rolled in from Port Elizabeth the air began to fizzle with excitement, the faces of both the Pearson students on the buses and the Parel Vallei students on the ground shone with anticipation. The greetings varied. Old friends from previous derbies reunited in hugs and chatter, while unfamiliar students welcomed each other with handshakes and tentative grins. The weekend kicked off with a Cultural Evening on Thursday night where in teachers, parents and scholars from both schools were treated to breathtaking performances by musicians of both schools. The line-up consisted of choirs, Vocal Ensembles, our famous Jazz Band, Big Band and the rising stars of the recently established Acappella group. Pearson’s

Orchestra entertained the audience with renditions from The Fiddler on the Roof and The Phantom of the Opera while Parel Vallei opted for our classic Superstitious and 99 Red Balloons. Throughout the course of the evening, both schools heartily supported one another with roaring rounds of applause, cheering and standing ovations.

Friday rolled around with an early start for the surfing teams. A last minute decision moved the competition from Strand to Koel Bay where the waves were rolling in fast and after a gruelling surfing session, Parel Vallei triumphed. A huge thanks is owed to Mr Combe and grade 11 pupil Daniel Neethling for making this new addition to our assemblage of brilliant sporting teams possible and organizing the event.

Back on the school grounds, Friday was filled with a mixture of Hockey games taking place on the astro and various other events in the building. These included the digital showcase of both schools’ art, design and photography. The General Knowledge competition, Dink of Sink and cut-throat debating matches were all enthusiastically supported and the classes hosting events were filled to the brim. A poetry recital was hosted by Mrs O’ Connor and the Spoken Word club, followed by the Spelling Bee and Spelathon.

We went down fighting to a 6 point lead to them but the support present throughout the duration of the game was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Everyone then made their way down to the field for the Rugby first team game and the highly anticipated Optog.

House Party, hosted by Parel Vallei in our sports hall. About four hundred students from grades 10-12 came together for a night of thumping music and dancing with the occasional sokkie liedjie, DJ’d by our Very own KALAS, Ian Marasigan and Minsoek Kim.

The Rugby boys took the field and the Headmistress of Pearson and our Headmaster, Mr Shenck were introduced to the players of each team. To kick off the final game of the Derby, Mr and Miss Parel Vallei, Jolindi Snyman and Dylan Austin along with Mr and Miss Pearson presented the Head Leaders and Head Cheerleaders with champagne, and the game commenced. The game that followed was a tough one, and our boys fought bravely until the final whistle blew, ending it with a bittersweet loss.

Oldies

Great leaders serve others and our former prefects have certainly done that time and time again. Their tireless efforts, taming of the grade 8s and work in every school event possible, has helped to shape PV into the amazing school it has become. Every single one of them have impacted the hearts and spirit of our school. The new prefects really have some massive shoes to fill. The time has come for a new season. The 2017/2018 council has stepped down and a new council has taken PV ’s reigns. Though we are sad to say goodbye, we are excited for the future - as well as the future of our previous council members.

HEAD BOY: Arend Moelich Being head boy is no walk in the park, your job demands that you need to be at your best, 24/7. You need to be responsible, caring, but most of all someone that inspires others. Arend has definitely gone above and beyond the call of duty and PV is sad to say goodbye. What is your favourite memory of your time as a prefect? Both the prefect camp and the Grade 8 camp were so much fun. We had such a jol playing games on a rugby field using hoola-hoops and bean bags. What can we do differently as a school to promote support and participation? Get the whole school involved. Maybe have cheerleaders from each grade? The PV-Pearson optog is a good example. We were all part of the kreet in some way, and that brought the school together. Which famous leader do you view as the most inspirational? Nelson Mandela

HEAD GIRL: Nicole de Lorme Our Boss Lady. Nicole de Lorme has steered PV as only she can, with gentleness and a passion for PV. What advice can you give to future council members? Be thankful for the privilege to represent the school. Treat fellow pupils with respect and kindness in all situations and be a team player! Take accountability for your responsibilities. What has been your most embarrassing moment at PV? My most embarrassing moment happened during Interschools in 2015 at Coetzenburg. I took a tumble down the pavilions during the victory lap after cheering for the day. While everyone was cheering I was sitting with the paramedics. Who is your favourite Disney princess? Belle

ACADEMICS: Jessica Mol Jessica Mol is a wonderful woman with a passion for PV. Her incredibly calm demeanour and amazing organisational skills guided us through the year. What are your plans for the future? I hope to be studying towards a degree in Physiotherapy at Stellenbosch University next year. Fingers crossed. How has being a prefect changed your life? I have definitely been able to witness the value of serving others and being part of a team. Being on the learner council has also helped me gain confidence and to have a better balance in life. What is your favourite movie? Mamma Mia is my go-to; I love it!

Left to right: Reneé van Zyl, Jessica Mol and Eduan Uys

SPIRIT: Zayd Wookey Zayd Wookey is one of PV’s most vocal men. His school spirit is rare and will be missed. We asked him a few questions about his future and the art of prefect-ship. Here are his answers. What was your best moment as a prefect? There are so many moments to choose from. My best moment is probably the moment Mr Schenck announced my name as prefect. I have never been happier in my entire life. It was truly a special moment that I will never forget. What would you do differently if you could start at grade 8 again? I just wish I could do more. I was very lazy and inactive as a student in grade 8. If I started all over I would try and be at most sports days and join clubs like Interact or film club.

Left to right: Irene Du Toit, Zayd Wookey and Norraine Scheffers

Which ‘Star Wars’ character would be your best friend? I haven't watched Star Wars but I guess it would have to be Chewbacca because my surname is Wookey.

MEDIA: Blaine Coetzee President of Parel Vallei. Blaine Coetzee has many names. It will be hard for us to forget him.

Left to right: Gita Lied and Blaine Coetzee. Not photographed: Kayla Graham

COMMUNITY: Inge Froehlich It is evident that giving back is very important at Parel Vallei. We have many clubs and drives that work hard to ensure that PV makes a difference. There is one word that comes to mind when I think of Inge, that word is caring. Caring about the needs of others is at the heart of community and this why she has led this portfolio so well. PV will miss you.

What has been your most embarrassing moment at PV? When my pants tore during the day and having it pointed out by several teachers that they could see my undergarments. What can we do differently to make better use of media? Give Wi-Fi as a matric privilege. If you could change the end of any movie, which movie would it be and how would you change it? The end of Titanic, make Jack fit on the door.

What are your plans for the future? I’ve been accepted to study Chemical Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch. How has being a prefect changed your life? I improved my people skills and gained a lot of experience working with all different kinds of people. I also learned many valuable lessons about leadership. Favourite childhood TV show? The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.

Left to right: Mia Doyle, Inge Froehlich and Kirsten Munro

TRADITION: Julio Gous Tradition and PV Pride go hand-in-hand, the one can’t exist without the other. To be a tradition prefect you need to uphold the core message of PV and celebrate its roots, because you need to remember where you came from in order to stick to where you are going. Julio has done an excellent job of representing PV as a whole and showing others what it means to be a true Parel Valleier. Left to right: Julio Gous, Zoë Naudé and Shannon Barry

What advice can you give to future council members? Enjoy all the laughter and friendships made in your last year. Enjoy working with new people and don't be shy to make new friends. Do not misuse or abuse your status as a prefect. Always give 100% What has been your most embarrassing moment at PV? My most embarrassing moment was standing on a chair and doing the Whip and Nae Nae without knowing the moves... and then having sweets thrown at me.

RCL: Zara Vermeulen Being head of the RCL entails working with the learners of PV to help solve problems and find ways to improve the school. A quality that is vital for this job is the willingness to improve WHICH Zara embodies. What are your plans for the future? After matric, I want to study engineering at Stellenbosch University, I would also like to travel and have fun! Cliché. What was your worst moment at PV? I haven’t had one yet, but I think maybe saying goodbye to PV. It will be my worst moment but also an exciting chance to start a new chapter. If you could eat only one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? Lasagna

CULTURE: Tanya Erasmus Left to Right: Reinata van Greuning and Tanya Erasmus. Not photographed: Skye Bullen

SPORT: Rachel Kaps

In her time as Culture prefect, Tanya Erasmus has promoted every aspect of culture and the excellence that flows from it. We don’t know how she does it.

What are your plans for the future? I am going to study B.Ed. next year at Stellies and the goal is to become a primary school teacher. Along with that I will also be getting my qualifications to become a dance teacher.

Being a sport prefect means that you have to promote, support and improve all sport at school. Rachel embodies all characteristics of a true sportswoman. You can see that sport holds a special place in her heart, because as captain of the first team girls’ hockey side, she doesn’t just promote sports at PV, but she does it with pride.

How has being a prefect changed your life? Being a prefect has definitely changed my life for the better! I made so many new friends, I learnt how to handle my time more efficiently and how to work with many different personalities, but most of all it gave me something to look back on in my matric year with a smile on my face - because I met a lovely group of people that I will never forget.

What are your plans for the future? My plans for the future are to go study law at Stellenbosch University and after that to do some travelling and see the rest of the world.

Which superhero would you like to be? Thor

What can we do differently as a school to promote sport participation? Look for a way to reward learners for participation. Sweet or Savoury? Savoury, I’m sweet enough.

Left to right: Rachel Kaps and Callum Forrester. Not photographed: Skye Boshoff

FAREWELL, COUNCIL OF 2018 PV may be seen as a body. It has many different parts, with different functions and skills, but they all need to work together to thrive. The prefects of 2018 have led the various areas of the school and have worked together to ensure PV’s success this year. The prefects of Parel Vallei are the skeleton of the school, you may not always see all the work that they do, but without them there, PV would not be able to fulfill its true potential. Thank you for your hard work, determination and most of all, your PV pride.

SOCCER TOUR TO PORTUGAL The trip In the June-July holidays, while many of us enjoyed the cosiness of our own homes, 13 Parel Vallei boys escaped to warm weather and beautiful beaches. De Beers Soccer Club in Somerset West sent their u/15 A, u/15 B teams and 2 players from the u16 teams to compete in the Iber Cup that took place in Portugal.

T

hey left on the 30th of June. The flight was 10 to 12 hours long in total. It was a 3 to 4-hour flight from Cape Town to Luanda, Angola and then another 7 to 8-hour flight from Luanda to Portugal. They arrived on the 1st of July, stayed in Portugal for 10 days and returned on the 11th of July. They stayed at a hotel in Lisbon -the capital of Portugal- called the Amazonia Lisboa Hotel. While there they did some sightseeing and got to experience the wonders of Portugal. They toured some of the most important soccer stadiums in Portugal such as Benfica Stadium, they went to the beach, they went to an aquarium in Lisbon, they visited Obidos -located in the country

side of Portugal - where a historical castle is located and they also went go-carting. The u/15 A team played 4 matches, all against Portuguese teams. 3 matches were group stage matches and the final match was the quarter final plate match. They drew 1-1 in the first match, 2-2 in the second match, the third match was a 2-1 loss and they drew 1-1 in the quarter finals. They unfortunately got knocked out of the competition when they went into penalties. The u/15 B team played 4 matches and lost all of them, the score of the first match was 0-9, the score of the second was 0-2, the score of the third was 0-7 and the score of the fourth was 0-4.

INTERVIEWS WITH THE TEAM: Lyle Williams A member of the u/15 B team.

What was the level of skill of the opponents and what did you think of them?

What was the atmosphere and culture in Portugal and its people compared to South Africa? How did they welcome you?

They were really good, but not as amazing as what you think they would be. They were very professional and play the game very well.

Portugal is a very nice and safe place, you can walk anywhere without fear and the people were very welcoming and friendly. The Portuguese eat a lot of chicken, soup and fries.

In your opinion, how well did your team play? Well I’ve only played with the u/15 B team a few times before Portugal in order to get an understanding of how they play, but it unfortunately didn’t work out, we didn’t play well and we had no confidence with the ball.

How was the excitement leading up to the 30th of June? I was very excited, especially after exams ended because I knew that I’d soon be heading off to Portugal for a soccer tournament.

Sayhan Khan A member of the u/15 A team.

What was the level of skill of the opponents and what did you think of them? They played a very physical game, they had good control over the ball and we thought that they were strong as they had very big and tall players. In your opinion, how well did your team play? I think our team coped well with how the Portuguese played, we definitely brought our own game to the field which made it difficult for the opposition. I think the teams we played underestimated us and we definitely surprised them. What was your favourite part of the trip? My favourite part of the trip was mainly playing and experiencing European football

and learning from it. What was the atmosphere and culture in Portugal and its people compared to South Africa? How did they welcome you? Portugal had a very warm hearted vibe and the people there are so kind and helpful. The area where we stayed was very peaceful. If you could do it all again, what would you do differently? Arriving there earlier because the day we arrived, we had to play the next day. It is important to arrive in a country early before the match to get used to the weather and altitude because we went from winter in Cape Town to summer in Lisbon.

PV PRODUCTIONS Parel Vallei’s annual Drama Week PV has once again blown us away with the quality of our drama productions. The drama department has shown diligence with this year ’s productions and they pulled it off once again! Without the hard work and dedication of the crew members, it would not have been possible. A big thank you to all involved! The productions performed at the Playhouse Theatre, HH High School’s Art festival, as well as the Durbanville and Montague Art festivals. PV will also be taking part in ATKV this term.

TOO BAD Directed by Miss Pienaar. Written from the floor of the Denpasar airport a story horrifically pleasing was created. Alekzia Thunderflame is an overconfident super villain who shuns violence, unless absolutely necessary. She deals in psychological villainy. She does not hurt kittens and she’s never been in love, until her latest evil plot, to ruin lives through the ultimate romance novel. Which leads her into the arms of Derrick, the energetic henchman, who has a way with words.

Too Bad is the story of one villain’s plot to destroy the world, with words! She plans to achieve this with the help from her secretary, Blue. All her plans must come together while she has to deal with her coffee-holic henchmen with big dreams a.k.a. Captain Insidious and the Very Scary Mooseman, Nemesia the nemesis, the unexpected power of love and an extraordinary mean publisher. This is a play with a superb cast of talented actors, very intriguing stage decor, an outstanding technical & stage crew and a hilarious, witty script. Too bad if you missed this amazing play! It is truly a work of art.

MACBETH Directed by Mrs Yoko A wonderful telling of Shakespeare’s sinister Scottish play. Macbeth was another Parel Vallei masterpiece. The production focuses its attention on the dynamic relationship between the famous characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. It promised to be an

unsettling mix of the macabre with a touch of avant-garde. It is a play that was bent on sending chills of excitement and curiosity down your spine. The cast and crew of this old-fashioned masterpiece truly portrayed the unsettling tale of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Both the main characters were portrayed by two of Parel Vallei’s gorgeous matrics, so this was the last opportunity to see Zelmari’s blue eyes and Blaine’s electrifying hair in action on stage.

PERFECT TEN Directed by Miss Botha A play that make you wonder what perfect really is and why the world decides what perfection should look like. Eight finalists of a beauty contest realise that the world isn’t just sunshine, lollipops and rainbows. The young ladies have an internal struggle with themselves to change and to improve, just to impress the audience and to stand a chance to earn the title perfect. The production aims to teach girls that you are good enough and that the pressure of society shouldn’t determine your self-worth. The negative effect of social media on the contestants is well portrayed in this thoughtprovoking piece. The all-girls cast worked together perfectly to create this remarkable play.

CURL UP & DYE “Curl Up and Dye International , how can we help you ?” Curl Up & Dye is 'n welbekende Suid -Afrikaanse satiriese komedie, geskryf deur Sue Pam Grant.

Curl up & Dye het my persoonlik baie laat lag, laat huil en laat skrik.

PV’s GOT TALENT There are school talent shows, then there is the PV talent show. Our school is bursting at the seams with talent, that ranges from stunning art and photography, to breathtaking vocals and dance. Our abilities are shown on more than just the stage of the Talent Show but in everything we take part in: whether it is chess, debate, math, drama, sport, the list goes on. It’s no secret that it’s easy to find talent in Parel Vallei.

I

n our school we often forget that the blue thread - pun not intended - runs through more than just the students but also all the members of staff who are just as talented as the rest of us and I’m not just talking about their surprise performance at the talent show, I doubt we’d easily forget how they rocked our uniforms that night, they even went as far as wearing our infamous rain jackets. Special congratulations to the audience for their roaring energy and of course our artists; Lahore Hauspie and Niklaas Brümmer, who placed first and second in the art category respectively and to Wicus Diedericks and Alice Torrpa in the photography category.

For the stage acts our winner was Ethan Clack who blew us away with; I see fire by Ed Sheeran. The runner up was Julian Wozniak with his insane drumming and in third place we had the Unusuals with their overwhelming performance of Stay with me by Sam Smith.

None of this would have been possible without our wonderful judges and staff who were all a part of making the talent show happen and we can’t forget our legendary MCs Blaine Coetzee and Zayd Wookey for their great dad jokes and special performance. To all our contestants thanks for showing us why it’s called PV’s got talent!

A BIT ABOUT THE WINNER Interview with Ethan Clack

How do you feel about your win? I feel extremely awestruck about it. I wasn’t expecting to win. I even said to my parents I wanted to leave after I performed and they made me stay to the end. I thought there were more people that had better voices and I only joined for fun. Do you have any future plans? I’ll keep trying my best and maybe make something out of this. We’re all dying to know, are you single? I am. What’s your typical weekend like?

Just being on my computer, watching movies, while snuggling under a blanket. How did you get to your song choice? I see fire by Ed Sheeran I love Ed Sheeran’s music and it’s one of the songs I started singing with. Dogs or cats? Cats, I’m just as lazy as one. What’s one of your embarrassing moments? A girl found out that I liked her and her friends teased me for years. When did you start singing? About a year ago. What’s your favourite colour? Aquamarine, I like blue, I like green and it is a mixture of both. Do you prefer the city or the countryside? More of an in between. I’ve lived in both enough.

MORE ON THE UNUSUALS Interview with Zen van der Merwe Who plays what?

Do you do gigs?

We have Matt Titus on lead vocals, Joshua Maasdorp on backup vocals, Daniel de Goede on guitar and backup vocals, Daniel Gouws on drums and me – Zen van der Merwe – on the bass guitar.

At the moment our repertoire is a bit small to be played at gigs but we are working on expanding our set list and eventually finding gig opportunities.

How’d the band get together? Josh, Matt and Daniel were already practicing a short while before I joined, I was so grateful that they let me play with them. How’d you come up with the unusual name? Daniel and I have had experience with performing but no one knew the other members had some sort of musical talent. So we called ourselves the Unusuals because no one really knew that we had that spark. Do you have any future plans? We are hoping to build a set list and introduce new members to the band, in hopes that we can compete with Almost Alive at next year’s Parel Stock and maybe get some contracts for out-of-school performances.

Is there anything you want to say to the rest of the school? On behalf of the band, I really want to give a HUGE thanks to the audience that attended. You gave us such positive feedback and that really helped keep the self-esteem high, because now we just want to perform more for you. We appreciate your support greatly. Which F.R.I.E.N.D.S character would each of you relate to most? Matt is the academic, brainy one, I guess Ross. Josh is the loud one so, Phoebe for sure. I’m the perfectionist when it comes to what we play so I’ll be Monica. Daniel Gouws could be Rachel and Daniel de Goede is the joker, smiley one, maybe Chandler.

WHO IS WOZNIAK The amazing drummer boy

Since when have you been playing drums?

I’ve been playing since I was about 4 or 5. What is your go-to joke? How do you make holy water? Boil the hell out of it. Do you prefer on or off stage? Definitely on stage. I love performing for people. What kind of music do you listen to? Many different types, mainly rock and electronic pop. What is your favourite animal? I don’t really have one but I’ve always been a cat person. They are funny and friendly. Who’s your favourite band? Led Zeppelin. I get most of my drum inspiration from them. What social media platform do you like the most? Instagram – julianwozniak_drums Do you play any instrument, other than drums? I started trombone earlier this year but I would like to play as many instruments as I can.

One hopped on a plane in Paris, the other in Bilbao, Spain, but they both hopped off at Cape Town International. Maybe you know them or know of them. Either way, you’re bound to learn something about the two new faces you may have seen this term at Parel Vallei.

J

e te présente: Méline Zalewski ー for the vast majority who may be opening a new tab of Google Translate ー I present to you: Méline, my french exchange student and temporary-live-in-best-friend. With all the perks of having a sister the same age as you, 16, and none of the shouting matches, safe for when one of us takes a hideous video of the other and threatens to post it on their story, we’ve grown very close over the last two months. Thus, it may be a bit of a stretch to call lying on her bed and chatting an interview. After asking her a few interview questions, I discovered that I knew almost all the answers already. After some deliberation, she decided that her favourite South African food/beverage is Rooibos tea, but it only took her a split second to summarise the South African feel: LEKKER! Koro, the exchange student from Spain, said this as well. Koro, who is also 16, seems to have enjoyed South Africa very much so far and had some interesting insights on church going here versus in Spain. The churches here are less traditional and the services more humorous. After asking them similar questions, I learned that she and Méline had very similar experiences here in South Africa.

Koro’s favourite South African delicacy is boerewors and she prefers nature to cities. I was surprised to learn that Koro had also gone bungee jumping at Bloukrans Bridge, the world’s highest bungee bridge, and that this was her favourite experience. For Méline, it was the most beautiful and second most terrifying experience of her life. Both of them had expected there to be more crime and poverty here and had come here to discover a new culture whilst improving their English. They also loved being surrounded by nature and meeting new people and said that this is definitely why they would love to come back in the future, although, naturally they miss their countries, native languages and their loved ones. My last thought on my hosting experience was that, ironically, I’ve seen and appreciated more of my country in the past two months than I have in the rest of my life. Seeing it through someone else’s eyes has made me notice all the little things again, like when the sun sets behind the ocean a mere ten blocks from my house. The grass might not be greener, but we sure have more of it.

STRANGERS OF TOKYO

Over the July holiday, I had the privilege of visiting Japan. Tokyo itself was amazing, and I would give anything to live there, but most of all, I was mesmerised by the dynamic cultures, fashions and individuals I encountered. I set out to document the people of Tokyo and bring just a slice of their beautiful culture and creative style back to South Africa in a photojournalism series called Strangers of Tokyo.

This photo is by far my favourite from the series, not just because by some miracle I managed to nail the lighting and composition in the two seconds it took me to take it, but also because it captures an important theme from my trip: The use of cell phones in public places. Some people might see being nailed to your phone and completely ignoring the people around you as rude, but it’s quite amazing when you think about it. This girl could be talking to her family, or she could be sharing her artwork on Instagram with someone on the other side of the world. Our technology has evolved so far and fast that we can connect with people all over the world, all while waiting on the side of the street.

This one was taken at Shibuya crossing, the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world, seconds before a stampede of people crossed in front of me. This guy looked at one of the most crowded streets in the world and thought, this looks like a nice place to take a break.

This portrait was taken at a bonsai museum just outside the main city. This man is one of the most skilled bonsai masters in the world, and he has trained his entire life to gain that title. Here he is working on a tree over 1000 years old. He is just one of a long line of people who will shape this tree according to their creative vision. It must be an amazing feeling, knowing you are part of an artwork that started centuries before you were born, and that will continue long after you have died.

This person is in a horse costume in the middle of the street. I have no idea what he was doing, or what the board he’s holding says, and I doubt I’ll ever know.

These photos are really just my way of appreciating this beautiful city and its people, and trying to share it with the people back home. But Tokyo is more amazing, multi-faceted and unique than I could convey in a few pictures, and I wish I could share the full stories of the people I photographed. But it’s not only in foreign countries where you can find strange and interesting people. Sometimes you don’t have to look farther than your own neighbourhood to find stories worth telling.

POLITICS WITH NATASHA De Lille vs. DA What happened between Patricia de Lille and the DA and how does this affect the country on a bigger scale?

I

t seems there has been a lot of talk about Patricia de Lille lately. If you’ve been wondering what exactly is going on within the DA - the political party who won the provincial elections in the Western Cape - you might not be surprised to know that it, much like the rest of the country, is in turmoil.

To really understand where the current dispute began we need to go back to the 2016 local government elections. De Lille’s party, the Independent Democrats, collaborated with the Democratic Alliance to overthrow the ANC in the 2016 elections for the Western Cape. After this election the power struggle began and The DA did not want De Lille in a position of power and began trying to force her to step down as Mayor of Cape Town. Nothing in this dispute is black and white, but of course, race is always a factor. Both sides have allegedly brought race up where race has no place. On the one side you have De Lille and her supporters, typically including ex-members of the ID, and on the other side you have leaders of the DA. The DA wanted De Lille out of their party before the 2019 general elections as they have accused De Lille of misconduct and being a bully. The two have settled in recent months and she has agreed to leave the party after a year conflict. However, there is likely more conflict to come with the elections nearing.

DIE VROU IN DIE BLOU MANTEL Boekresensie Deon Meyer se griessel-dossier laat enige iemand se toonhare rys. Die vrou in die blou mantel is definitief ‘n moet-lees.

A

THE LONELIEST GIRL IN THE UNIVERSE Book Review When you read the title, this novel probably sounds like a sappy teen romance with a love triangle and lots of: no one understa nds me moments. In reality, this science fiction thriller is not for the faint-hearted.

R

omy Silvers was born on a spaceship headed for the closest habitable planet, which is 50 years’ travel away. When she turned 11, a technical failure caused the death of her parents and all the astronauts on the ship. Left alone on the ship, with her only human contact being messages from a NASA-appointed therapist, Romy is quite literally the loneliest girl in the universe. After spending 5 years alone, Romy gets news that NASA is sending another spaceship to join hers. She starts emailing the only person on the other ship: an all-too-charming young man named J. Romy finds herself falling in love with a stranger. She also receives strange messages from Earth, and soon enough, political unrest starts threatening her life on the ship. Romy’s sanity is declining, and she starts to realise that everything is not as it seems. Can she survive long enough to reach the new planet? Can she trust J? Can she trust herself? The Loneliest Girl in the Universe features heart-breaking emotional moments intertwined into a suspenseful storyline. Even though seasoned horror readers might not find it as creepy or frightening as other thrillers, it is by no means a light hearted read and I would not recommend it for the timid. I would however, recommend it for anyone looking to be left on the edge of their seat. The novel might seem like a sweet romantic story set in deep space, but do not be fooled, the themes become progressively darker. Not only is it an enjoyable and unique storyline, but it also tackles serious topics like mental illness. The Loneliest Girl in the Universe is a must-read for romance lovers, physics geeks and thriller fanatics alike.

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK Meet Nicole Salgueiro, our newest comic relief Nicole was born in Lisboa, Portugal but has lived in South Africa all her life. Ever since she was little, she used to make and sell comic books at school during breaks. She then became very set on finding her style and began to study different techniques, slowly but surely getting her to where she is today. Nicole mostly draws cartoons and facial expressions as she enjoys playing around with the different components of the face — and she loves watching cartoons. I enjoy doing little bits of symbolism here and there regarding the person or topic. I really like to poke fun of certain traits a person has that I admire and they don’t, sort of contradictory isn’t it? We are so chuffed to have Nicole on our team and eagerly await her next cartoon.

OUR COVER kalas Evolved from watching shows to being the show Adrenalin pumped through their veins as the thundering crowd waited in anticipation. The blinding lights and smoke rose up around them. PV’s top musicians were assembled in one place: this year’s Grandwest. KALAS only had a few familiar faces in the crowd of 5000 people and no idea where any of it was taking them. Ian and Minsoek started their journey on the 26th of August 2017. Ultra music festivals, Tomorrowland and taking in the master classes of famous producers, such as Martin Garrix/ Brooks, are some of the various inspirations that have developed them to what they’ve become now. At Grandwest, they performed an original song called Never Look Back with Mia Van der Merwe on vocals. KALAS chose Mia because she has a solid voice and her drama career has given her experience with performing in front of large crowds. While producing they lived by the motto: Let the music unite us, and it proved successful, as they were announced as the best electronic artists. They have been interviewed by KFM radio, who plans on airing their songs when they are fully ready to be played. The music pulsed through everyone in the arena and by the end of their song the front of the stage was flooded with people who loved it. Ian and Minsoek plan on starting a vlog and taking their music to the next level. These guys have proven that they can achieve anything they set their minds to. We are excited to see what the future of KALAS holds.
