Genealogy club helps members find their roots and branches

“The women in my family are the story collectors.” Sun City resident Jenifer Andrews is only two weeks into her study of genealogy, and she is jazzed!

Her enthusiasm is shared by Susan Dobbs and Margaret Downs, Sun City residents and three of the 656-member Genealogy Special Interest Group (SIG) of the Sun City Hilton Head Computer Club. The SIG is led by cochairs Dobbs and Jim Bowden, both of whom are accomplished researchers.

Dobbs is a former head librarian of the Heritage Library, a nonprofit center that focuses on Hilton Head Island history and ancestry research. According to a January 2014 USA Today article, the Heritage Library stands among prestigious libraries like the National Archives and Ellis Island,

as one of the “ten top libraries to trace family roots.”

Bowden has done genealogy research for many years. “I was involved in genealogy with a small group in New Jersey,” he said. “I wanted to leave something to my grandchildren.”

Stories of family discoveries among the members are everywhere.

Bob Simon, who is new to the club but “has been dabbling in it (genealogy) for years,” discovered that his family and his wife’s family lived close to each other in the Bern Region of Switzerland in the early 1800s. Neither Simon nor his wife knew of their geographically close origins.

Dobbs produced a newspaper article from the March 25, 1856, Alexandria Gazette that explained that her three times great grandmother (ggggm) might have poisoned her three times

great grandfather (ggggf). Letters are used by some researchers to shorten the wording for lengthy relationships such as “three times great grandmother.

The article stated that Dobbs’ ggggf “died on the 26th December last, under circumstances which gave rise to the suspicion that his wife, who seemed to prefer the society of Solomon Carrier to that of her lawful husband, had poisoned him by putting strychnine in the butter. The deceased complained of the bitterness of the butter… a dog that had eaten a biscuit, with a portion of the same butter upon it, died with symptoms of poisoning within a short time….”

A May 28, 1856, article in the Lynchburg Daily Virginian reported that Dobbs’ ggggm and Carrier were both acquitted of the charge of murder.

Members’ research also uncovers compelling connections.

Andrews had an ancestor who was on the Fortune, the second ship that arrived after the Mayflower. She and Dobbs recently discovered that in 1628 “our families lived near each other in the New World. It is amazing what you learn.”

Downs unfolded the pages of her printed family tree. “I’m going to Ireland this coming summer,” she said. “I have first cousins (in Ireland) who don’t even know each other, and I will introduce them while I’m there.”

Through the ages, family histories were passed on orally, and sometimes it is difficult to find written records. “Remember,” Dobbs said, “it depends on the country or county records. In New England, there are town records dating back to the 1600s. There are some church records and land ownership records that extend back for several centuries.”

In this day and age, most genealogy research is computer-driven. “There

are billions of records on line,” Dobbs said. “I tell students, ‘You are going to learn history whether you want to or not.’”

The challenge of learning the processes for genealogy research is unique, and so is the help. The Genealogy SIG provides classes, help-sessions, monthly guest speakers, informational meetings, and access to specialized software like ancestry.com, newspapers.com, familysearch.com, and fold3.com (which focuses on military records from the revolutionary war through World War II.)

The Computer Club holds licenses for many paid sites, and provides access to passwords. Use of the software is free for members; however, it must be used in the computer room.

Both Bowden and Dobbs provide individual help sessions twice a month in the evening. It is necessary to reserve a spot for an hour-long individual tutoring session.

Simon sings the praises of Bowden, who regularly teaches the use of Family Tree Maker software. Simon is using it to make his family tree.

Andrews calls Dobbs “a premiere teacher. She is concise and supportive.”

For more information about joining, classes, and help-sessions, visit the Computer Club website, suncitycc. org.

Membership in the Genealogy SIG is free, but requires membership in the Computer Club, which costs $10 per year for the first member, and $5 for each additional household member.

In many cases there is collaboration among SIG members as they search out their family roots. According to Dobbs, “It’s all about sharing. Energy creates synergy.”

WHAT IS RESTORATIVE MEDICINE?

Restorative medicine involves using Human Cellular Tissue Products (HCTPs) to help the body heal itself. Through restorative medicine, damaged tissue in joints are supplemented with healthy structural tissue to provide an opportunity to restore from within.

KNEES, SHOULDERS, AND HIPS

Dr. Heather Hinshelwood MD has helped thousands of patients with knees, shoulders, hips and more. The procedure takes only 30 minutes and allows the patient to leave with a simple band-aid over the site.

RESULTS ORIENTED

Many patients experience a significant reduction in knee pain within 48 hours due to the reduced inflammation. With restorative medicine therapy, most patients feel maximum results within 10 to 12 weeks and up to 95% within 6 months.

Jan. 18, 2023 Page 7SC Over one million joint replacements are performed in the U.S. each year and according to the Cleveland Clinic, over 85% of knee replacements need to be redone within 15 years. Since 2018 the Fraum Center for Restorative Health has been one of the only facilities in the United States, offering a non-surgical alternative to joint replacement that is Beyond Stem Cells™. Green machines serve us and planet with quiet power

Landscaping tools don’t last forever. When you or your landscaper need to replace equipment, the best option is switching to battery-powered devices.

Environmentally friendly lawnmowers, leaf-blowers, edgers, trimmers, and chainsaws are all available and gaining popularity with homeowners and professionals.

Battery-powered motors produce zero emissions, which stands in stark contrast to gasoline-powered engines. Lacking the emissions-capturing technology of the auto industry, these gas engines are

even dirtier and more polluting than cars, emitting an outsized share of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds.

Running a commercial gas-powered leaf blower for just an hour produces about as much pollution as driving a 2017 Toyota Camry 1,100 miles.

Electric motors are more efficient than gas engines and require less energy input to do the same amount of work. Much of the energy generated by gasoline engines is heat, which in landscaping is just wasted energy.

Electric motors don’t have the same

heat waste problem, so more of the energy they generate goes directly toward powering the tool.

Most electrics are now powered by lithium-ion batteries, which charge faster and produce power much longer than conventional batteries, thus lowering both the operational and environmental costs.

As power plants increase their reliance on renewable energy sources, the environmental cost of charging will be further reduced.

Convenience and safety alone can make battery tools the right choice. Gasoline engines can be hard to start and require periodic tune-ups. Battery power starts by flipping a switch or squeezing a trigger. No more broken or tangled pullcords and no getting burned on a hot engine.

Handling gasoline can be problematic and frequently involves spills when refilling the tool’s tank or when filling a container at a gas station. Transporting the fuel can leave your car smelling of gasoline.

Two-stroke engines require mixing oil with the gasoline, both highly combustible, and must be stored safely. Only about 2/3 of this fuel is actually burned with remainder going out into the air as dangerous hydrocarbon vapor.

A major consideration in switching to battery-operated machines is noise reduction. Who in Sun City hasn’t had the tranquility of their lanai or screen room violated by a nearby leaf-blower screaming at 110 decibels for 10 or more minutes straight?

Battery-powered machines are much quieter and are only run while working. Gasoline engines are left idling to avoid difficulty restarting them.

Purchase prices for both types of equipment are comparable while fuel and maintenance costs make battery-operated the better financial choice. Encourage your landscaper to make the right choice for the environment.

Winter in Sun City

Page 10SC Jan. 18, 2023

Captured, weighed down by a fluffy monster in the night

When I was a youngster, we heated our home with coal. The coal truck would arrive, put the “shoot” through the basement window and load the coal bin up with the black sedimentary rock.

(Am I aging myself?)

During the night the house would cool down tremendously. In those bitter cold winter months, the early morning chill would literally have me shivering.

My father would shovel coal into the furnace when he woke at 5 a.m. By the time I emerged, I would run to the living room and stand in front of that heat vent so the hot air would blow beneath my nightie for instant warmth.

I learned, at a very young age, to layer my blankets in order to make it through those ghastly cold hours. I always covered myself with a sheet, two blankets and a comforter. I grew accustomed to having that heaviness

on me. Sometimes even an electric blanket was added into the mix.

When I married, I just about drove my husband out of bed with all those blankets. I radiated heat and made him miserable with my night sweats. But then he drove me nuts snoring and blowing that tune in my ear all night long. Love is grand!

For Christmas 2021, my daughter bought me a weighted blanket. It weighs 20 pounds, which is marvelous for someone like me. The only problem I found was that the heavy interior would shift around inside the duvet

cover.

One recent night I tugged and pulled to get the glob of jumbled up covering around my shoulders. Perfect! I immediately fell asleep. But during the night I awoke and was trying to get out of bed. Somehow this massive fabric had literally wrapped itself around me, encasing my legs completely.

I felt captured under this fluffy monster and began flailing around, trying to free myself. The more I fought, the more it seemed to engulf me. I was pinned down and having a frightful time trying to untangle

myself from its grip. Due to the heaviness, it wouldn’t budge.

There was a part of me that felt panic setting in, yet I managed to burst out laughing. I could see the headlines: Sun City geezer suffocated by her Christmas blanket!

I stirred so violently to free myself, that I heard two of the box spring support boards fall beneath the bed. My head instantly dipped backwards with the loss of support.

I thrashed even more because my fear now was having the mattress and box spring fall through to the floor with me stuck under my monstrous Christmas blanket. As I struggled, I laughed even more.

The “blanket fairies” must have been watching over me as I finally was able to free myself from its tight hold.

I’m beginning to think that this particular child is trying to do me in – in order to collect early on her inheritance.
