Sun City’s ‘Marathon Man’ sets records at every turn By Katherine Mace CONTRIBUTOR

“Here comes Jim Miller and it looks like he’s going to shatter the record,” boomed the announcer, as runners swept down the final stretch of the Mortgage Network Half Marathon Race held recently in Hardeeville. The invitational race featured elite distance runners from across the country. Although most of the runners were less than half his age and crossed the finish line before him, Jim Miller was recognized and cheered as he knocked one full minute off the record time for his age group. Miller lives part time in Sun City with his wife, Pat Bannerman, who used to run and compete in marathons. She’s no longer racing, but said, “I enjoy cheering Jim and being his No. 1 fan!” Miller’s fame extends far beyond this race. He is one of only four people in the world who has ever run sub-3 hour marathons (26+ miles) in six decades – the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020! He

holds the record for the longest elapsed time between his first, when he was 18, and the most recent, when he was 62. COVID-19 created obstacles for the last marathon, which was in August 2020. Miller, a two-time Olympic qualifier, had hoped to participate in marathons in North Carolina and North Dakota but they were cancelled because of the coronavirus. “At this point, I realized I was probably going to have to put on a race myself if I wanted to catch this time when I was really fit and healthy,” he said. Miller had created and directed a race in the past, so knew what was required to organize, and then get it sanctioned and certified. He was able to partner with the Green Mountain Athletic Association to hold the COVID-compliant race in his home state of Vermont. “When I’m in a race it’s such a focused effort. I’m concentrating the whole race

– regulating, observing internally – my breathing, and effort level. I even have to focus on relaxing,” he said. “You get to know your body. I work to have smooth motion. My fastest running is well behind me, but I’ve made adjustments for age.” Working toward the Olympic Trials was an exciting time for Miller. “I was running about a 2:26, but to qualify I knew I had to do 2:21.” (In runner-speak, the first number is the hours, and the second is the minutes, so at that time Miller knew he had to run 26-plus miles in less than 2 hours and 21 minutes to qualify for the Olympic Trials.) “Everyone in the country was focused and closing in on that goal for a two-year period before the qualifying,” he said. “I qualified twice. The first year, I was in awe of the people at the starting line. It was the who’s who in the racing world. In 1984, I was a little more relaxed.” How does Miller get excited about a race? “It’s mental,” he said. “I know I’m one minute a mile slower than I was, but if I were anchored in the past, I’d be disappointed. I evaluate where I am, and figure out what’s realistic.” His goal now is the March 21 Tobacco Road marathon in Raleigh, N.C. Miller trains seven days per week. Three of those are recovery days. “That’s when I don’t have to focus so completely,” he said. “I can daydream a little.” He said he has less range of motion than he used to, and made this point about his training: “It’s critical to warm up. It takes me about 30 minutes to get ready, then I do yoga after every run, and again in the evening each day. This is what I do to keep healthy.” Will Miller run a marathon when he’s in his 70s? “There is no way to make a prediction,” he said. “I have confidence in my training. I’m not going to write it off. If I have a shot, I’ll take it.” Katherine Mace is a writer who lives in Sun City.

The future is near: Electric vehicles are coming

BOB COUGHLIN

Barb Coughlin arrives home in Sun City in the Tesla she shares with her husband Bob. Tesla is one of the most popular electric vehicles (EVs) on the road.

Transportation emissions account for more than 28% of all greenhouse gases in the U.S., about 75% of that from cars and light trucks. It’s clear we will never meet critical carbon reduction goals without a dramatic change in transportation’s environmental impact. The good news is the growing movement to fully battery powered electric vehicles (EVs) has already begun and promises to deliver the needed change. Today, EVs amount to less than 2% of new car sales in the U.S., with only about 1.6 million of the 275 million registered vehicles in America EVs. But experts predict that number is about to take off. Surveys of current EV owners consistently show they are well satisfied with their cars and hope to purchase another EV when they next buy. They report high satisfaction with handling and pick up, average $700 a year in gas sav-

ings and about $300 on maintenance. The biggest objection from potential buyers is the lack of readily available charging stations – but that’s changing too. We have dozens of public charging stations in the Bluffton area, many of them currently operating without a fee, including stations at the Tanger Outlets and Palmetto Electric Cooperative offices. A number of car dealerships have or are installing charging stations. President-elect Joe Biden has pledged to create 500,000 new charging stations by 2030, so the outlook for an improved EV infrastructure is bright. There is also currently federal legislation introduced to require charging stations along all federal highway system roads so that a driver can enter the system at any point and never go farther than the average range for EVs without seeing a charging station. There is a bill in the South Carolina to install charging stations at all state

Fancy new cat attacks decorations, opens doors, wreaks havoc By Chris Roosa CONTRIBUTOR

My daughter has a real love of animals. Last year she bought a kitten from the Ukraine. The Maine Coon breed is known not only for their large size but their intelligence. The parents were 36 inches long and weighed 35 pounds. The thing I find intriguing is their cunning ability to get in trouble. My daughter spent one weekend piecing together much of a 1,000-piece puzzle. I was impressed because I’m incapable of figuring out even a toddler’s puzzle. Arriving home from work, she discovered that Zephyr (the cat’s name means “soft, gentle wind” – so fitting isn’t it?) had destroyed many hours of her tedious puzzle placement. An array of pieces were scattered across the living room floor. Her dogs had picked up several random pieces and destroyed them by chewing them into slobber. I suggested that perhaps she should have begun the assembly on the dining room table rather than the coffee table. Her remark was, “Oh yeah! That would have been so much better, Mother, as a cat would never think to jump up on a table.” It didn’t take the kitten long to adorn his human mother with nightly gifts. He began bringing tubes of lip balm into her bed. Soon that was followed by his squeaky ball, along with the rubber mouse. Next came her diet program snacks, which had been hanging in the pockets of a vinyl organizer on the back of her door. Zephyr was kind enough to snatch them individually, bring them to mommy and line these snacks up on her bed, just in case she got hungry during the night. On occasion the cat’s rubber mouse would end up in the toilet. Other days the trash was dumped and scattered throughout the house. The Maine Coon oftentimes wanted to play at four in the morning. He’d leap onto my sleeping child with even more offerings of his toys. After a repetition of kitty leaping on the bed with these treasures, the frustrated owner would carry the coon cat into a

spare bedroom and close the door. Not five minutes later, the feline would jump back on the bed with yet more snacks from the organizer. Yes, kitty had now figured out how to open doors. Then came Christmas! What a wonderful time of the year … for cats. They become a permanent fixture inside the Christmas tree, peering over the decorations hanging from the branches. Ornaments drop to the floor. Lights that were carefully draped on the branches have now fallen and are lying tangled levels below. There’s more tinsel on the cat’s head than on the tree. And for extra fun, some days the Maine Coon would even leap so violently that the tree would tumble, crashing onto the living room floor. The cat has taken over the house! I personally see me laughing, for many years to come, as I listen to the tales of the destruction that Zephyr accomplishes. I must admit, I sit there chuckling with my two 7-pound Shih Tzu’s quietly laying on my lap, knowing full well they will never climb up on my counters, never drop toys in my toilet, and certainly never peer out at me through a Christmas tree branch. Chris Roosa is a resident of Sun City Hilton Head.

welcome centers and rest stops EV models will soon be easily available because all major U.S. carmakers – and a slew of foreign manufacturers – are in or entering the EV market in a big way. Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Citroen, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Peugeot, Porsche, Tesla and VW all are selling EVs. Most of these models are available for purchase or special order at dealerships in the Lowcountry. The range – that is, the distance a fully charged EV can travel without recharging – varies widely, but upstart manufacturer EV Electra sells a model with a 497-mile range. One of Tesla’s current models has a 391-mile range. With each new model year, EV and battery technology gets better, ranges get longer, and as manufacturers ramp up to scale, the cars will be getting more affordable. Some EVs are still quite expensive, but there are federal tax credit incentives, likely to get even better. Car
