WoodChicks carve out niche in a traditionally male workshop

TOM MILLS

WoodChicks members, from left, Kay Blevins, Laura Hartley and Peggy Randall admire the fine details on a recently completed cutting board in the workshop of the Sun City Woodworkers and Modelmakers Guild.

By Katherine Mace CONTRIBUTOR

Ruffled, embroidered tool belts are evidence that the WoodChicks, a special interest group (SIG) of the Sun City Woodworkers and Modelmakers Guild, was formed as a support system for women, but men can, and do, belong too. Upon graduation from the guild’s basic woodworking classes, everyone (including the guys) is invited to join the WoodChicks. Nineteen percent of the 950-member guild are women. Peggy Randall, Laura Hartley and Kay Blevins were in the forefront when the group was formalized in March 2019. Kathy Kohler was their leader who spearheaded the effort to establish the WoodChicks, in which safety and woodworking standards are the same for all members. “There are three basic rules: safety, safety and safety,” said Randall, current president. “The woodshop can be a little intimidating at first, but everyone in the guild is supportive. We have fun! This is an uplifting place.” WoodChicks meets three times a month. On the first Monday, they greet new members, and some pair up with buddies. At their meetings, the WoodChicks have showand-tell where members can see the products of each other’s labor, and seek advice.

Does anyone ever make a woodworking mistake? Randall smiled and said, “When there is a screw up, we help each other with what we call ‘design modification’!” The impressive 9,000-square-foot workshop building houses equipment estimated to be worth $375,000. It was all bought and is maintained by guild members. “No CAM funds are used,” Hartley said. The guild has a resource room where members can get patterns, and can read about the guild’s history. Volunteers oversee the front desk, tool room, each of the five stations in the shop, and the 32 cameras that provide video surveillance of the entire woodshop. If there is an accident, which is rare, there is video evidence, so the cause and remedy can be determined, Randall said. “We welcome new members,” Randall said. “Lots of people come without any skills. The teachers are peers who live in the community.” Blevins, who is Hartley’s mother agrees. “This group has phenomenal teachers, and we laugh and have such fun together,” she said. “The people are all positive.” For more information about the WoodChicks, stop by the guild’s shop on Red Dam Road in Sun City. Katherine Mace is a writer who lives in Sun City.

Local Bird Count volunteers spot more than 10,000 birds By Jim Cubie CONTRIBUTOR

More than 200 residents in the Bluffton-Okatie area counted more than 10,000 birds as part of the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count Dec. 17. About half of the counters were in Sun City. Special this year was the spotting of a Bullock’s Oriole, which had never been seen before in this area. It was seen and photographed in Rose Hill. The Sun City/Okatie count gets the second most participation in the state. Similar counts took place in more than 2,000 communities in the United States from Dec. 14 to Jan. 5. The Sun City-Okatie count includes eight communities: Sun City, Belfair, Callawassie, Rose Hill, Hampton Hall, Spring Island, Hampton Lakes and Oldfield. The Christmas Bird Count is a community affair, with teams organized by a volunteer in each neighborhood. The

teams usually set out early in the morning, either walking or in golf carts. There are an estimated 3,000 fewer birds today than if the count had taken place in the 1970s. This is a conservative estimate given the reduction in bird habitat in the area over the past 40 years in this area. In another 40 years, there will likely be 3,000 fewer birds. Major recent changes in bird protection laws will make it worse. Wetland and migratory bird protection laws have been greatly weakened by recent administrative actions which will increase deaths, even among birds groups that have done well. The traditional favorite, the Bald Eagle in Sun City was counted once more. The prevalence of eagles is a great illustration of how the Endangered Species Act can help a species recover. This act was recently greatly weakened by the Trump administration. The survey is especially important after the recent report in Science Magazine showing nearly a 30% drop in bird pop-

KEVIN BRADY

This male Bullock’s Oriole was identified by Mindy Cawley of Rose Hill at her suet feeder during the 2019 Rose Hill Christmas Bird Count in December. This is a western species normally ranging from the Pacific coast to Oklahoma and mid-Texas. The previous closest sighting was in the Brunswick, Ga., and Charleston areas.

ulations since the 70s – a loss of 3 billion birds. The report found that 12 groups, including common backyard birds such as sparrows, warblers, finches and blackbirds, were particularly hard hit. Data from CBC surveys played a critical role in confirming these shocking losses. The data collected in this year’s count will be used in the future to assess changes in bird populations. Bird volunteers are committed to preventing further losses. The Sun City Bird Club has developed specific actions which homeowners can take. The experts recommend three steps that citizens can take to help stem further losses. They are: 1. Keep cats inside. We love cats, but they kill birds. Cats are not bad; they are wired to hunt and kill. Veterinarians recommend keeping them inside. Indoor cats live much longer. 2. Protect birds feeding in your from hitting the windows of your house. About a half a billion birds die annually hitting windows – and 44% of those deaths are from residential window strikes. For a comparison of various bird window protection systems, including costs, photos of installed systems, and DIY

directions, visit Suncitybirdclub.org/window-strikes. These are scientifically tested options. Many popular options – like decals and hawk sculptures - do not work. (To compare the options at a local home, contact the author at the email below.) 3. Plant and protect native trees and shrubs. Do not cut down native trees. Oaks provide more bird food than any other plant in your yard (caterpillars, for example). As the nation’s leading expert has said. “The value of oaks to wildlife cannot be underestimated.” Affordable options to address concerns about root damage are also provided at suncitybirdclub.org/native-plants. This page is also a good resource for information about how to landscape with native trees and shrubs. There you will find a simple three-step process. It offers free landscape plans which show where to plant native trees and shrubs. It also includes photos of each tree, shrub and plant, and shows where you can buy them at local nurseries. Jim Cubie is the conservation coordinator for the Sun City Bird Club and overall Sun City-Okatie Christmas Bird Count coordinator. jimcubie1@gmail.com

Board acts positively to put sun back into Sun City

DAVID SMITH

An example of an unobtrusive solar array on a rear roof.

Begin living “The Seabrook Life” by moving to The Seabrook BEFORE you sell your home! Find out why Sun City residents are choosing The Seabrook for their retirement years!

By David Smith CONTRIBUTOR

The South Carolina Legislature passed the Energy Freedom Act and Gov. Henry McMaster signed it into law in May 2019. This law opened up solar energy for everyone in our state. Shortly thereafter, our Global Climate Change Group circulated a petition at the SCHH Earth Day Celebration. This petition, which was signed by nearly 300 residents, encouraged our board of directors to look into relaxing the design guidelines that restricted solar installations in the community. When presented with the petition and information about how much solar panels have changed since the guidelines had been enacted, and combined them with the recent passing of the Energy Freedom Act, the board felt they needed to ask the community how members felt about solar and put out their recent solar survey. The results, as reported at the Dec. 11, 2019, quarterly BOD meeting, were decisive. With more than 2,600 households responding, two of the three survey questions had 80% pro-solar responses and the third question had 72% in favor. Based on these results, the design guidelines have been updated, effective Jan. 1, to allow solar arrays on rear roofs that are visible from golf courses and across lagoons, both of which were previously not permitted. The board has also asked the Modifications Committee to try to work with homeowners to find ways to make their planned arrays acceptable.

A million U.S. homes installed solar panels in the three years 2016 through 2018. During the past few years, solar panels have become increasingly more efficient, less expensive, and more aesthetically pleasing. There are many reasons one might want to go solar: • Drastically reduce or even eliminate your electric bills, generate free power for your system’s entire 25-plus-year lifecycle. • Earn a great return on your investment. Average American homeowners pay off their solar panel system in seven to eight years and then keep on earning. • Protect against rising energy costs, which have averaged 3% increases over the past 10 years. • Increase property value. Solar panels raise a home’s value by an average 4.1% across the U.S., according to Zillow. • Boost U.S. energy independence. The sun is a near-infinite source of energy and a key component of achieving energy independence in the United States. • Create jobs and help your local economy. Solar-related jobs tend to be higher paying and cannot be outsourced, contributing significantly to the economy. • Doing the right thing, protecting the environment, reducing your carbon footprint, and contributing to our planet’s sustainability. The Global Climate Change Group welcomes your questions and comments at schhclimate@gmail.com. David Smith is resident of Sun City and a member of the Global Climate Change Group.

KAY MILLS

By Kay Mills CONTRIBUTOR

Bluffton Sun and Sun City Sun contributors Kate (Katherine) Mace and Tom Mills were born into a family of news. Their father, George “Lefty” Mills, was a reporter for the Des Moines (Iowa) Register, covering Iowa politics, history and the state’s connection to presidents from FDR to George W. Bush. Lefty also wrote for Life, Time and U.S. News and World Report magazines. At 70, he was hired by Des Moines WHO Television to work as a field reporter. Lefty loved interviewing people and appearing on camera with the latest local stories. He also wrote several books on Iowa history and served as a trusted political consultant for public television. Lefty’s influence on the Mills children was profound. In writing school papers, Tom and Kate were instructed to rewrite the lead sentence at least 10 times to “get it right.” Both remember that even after they left for college, their letters home were sometimes returned with red correction marks and suggestions of revisions. The Mills family was the first in their area to have a television, and Life Magazine featured a picture of the four Mills children signing a contract requiring them to complete their homework before they could

watch a program. Writer Kate, a registered nurse, has had a varied career. She and her husband, Stu, worked in several different states directing camps for people with disabilities. She has worked in emergency rooms, directed a hospice program and continues to write protocols for employees of a large national company that serves clients with disabilities. In addition, she volunteers for Volunteers in Medicine in Ridgeland. Photographer Tom was a professor and researcher at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. He wrote more than 90 scientific articles during his career and taught graduate and medical students. After retirement, Tom helped build houses for Habitat for Humanity and continued his hobby as an avid cyclist. Wherever he has been, Tom usually has had a camera nearby. His special interest is in photographing people. Kate and Tom both enjoy their work with the Bluffton Sun because they discover places they have never been, they have an opportunity to meet interesting people and the stories keep their creative juices flowing. They have several ideas for new stories and look forward to sharing them with readers in the coming issues. Kay Mills is the wife of Tom Mills and the sister-in-law of Kate Mace.
