Chocolates, a rose and a singing valentine. Romance is in the air! Sun City’s very own singing valentines are delivered every year, and this Valentine’s Day was no different – except that COVID-19 safety considerations had to made. Four separate barbershop quartets fanned out across Sun City and the surrounding area delivering more than 25 singing valentines, and they did it safely. “Singing valentines are universal, for delivery to both men and women. Singing for people – especially when the world around us is a little too challenging – adds extra sunshine to the lives of both the recipients and the singers,” said Howard Pobiner, bass singer for the quartet. “We are really proud that we figured out how to deliver our brand of sunshine in a socially distant and safe manner.”
They delivered the singing valentines wearing masks in front of recipients’ homes. All quartet members belong to the Sun City Harmonizers and sing barbershop, Do Wop, Broadway, Rock n Roll, Beatles, and American Standards. They sing inside and outside Sun City for many occasions, including holidays, birthdays (they recently serenaded a 100-year-old), and even a Veteran’s Association happy hour. This Valentine’s Day weekend, they also collaborated with the Lighthouse Chorus from Hilton Head Island to deliver singing valentine’s outside the gates of Sun City in neighboring communities. Getting a singing valentine is an amazingly intimate experience. The quartet members make eye contact, and there is no doubt that one feels the valentine is being delivered personally. Pobiner says it’s the delivery

that counts. “ A singing valentine is a special experience,” he said. “We’ve had many memorable valentines. This year we delivered one to a couple who have been married for 60 years.” Phil Pescarino, the quartet’s lead singer, agreed. “We know we are affecting that person. They are so surprised,” he said. “For us to see that is special.” Barbershop is a style of a cappella (unaccompanied) close harmony that is characterized by four-part chords for every note. The singers manipulate the sound to produce overtones beyond the note being sung. It’s almost as if a fifth person is singing. And, man, does it work! The tone is sublime. “Wow! It’s great! I just love it!” said Robert Adams, tenor, describing what it’s like to “hit the chord.” Hitting the chord is a physical and an emotional experience. The quartet members all agreed that they know when it happens. It’s when the blending of voices is just right, and it has an effect that causes a tingling in the spine and goose bumps over the body. Pescarino explained, “When we ring the right note, we feel it!” He has been in 12 choruses over the past 50 years, and sings barbershop wherever he
goes. Carl Hausler, the group’s baritone, is singing in his second year with this group. Everyone nodded when Pobiner said, “The camaraderie is remarkable.” This foursome usually performs together, unless someone is traveling or unwell, and then a substitute steps in. They specialize in the Do Wop style. The Sun City Harmonizers are an interest group of the Sun City Music Guild and belong to the Carolina District of the Barbershop Harmony Society, the national organization whose mission is to bring people together in harmony and fellowship to enrich lives through singing. The Harmonizers have a quartet development program that is available to all interested Sun City residents. For more information, or to book a quartet for your next special occasion, contact Pobiner at hpobiner@gmail. com. “There are few things to feel good about, so this is especially important this year,” Adams said. His chorus-mates agreed. Singing, and especially singing valentines, makes everyone feel good! Katherine Mace is a writer who lives in Sun City.

Bird-friendly yards are easy to create, nurture and enjoy
JOHN BURRACK
A male cardinal takes a break amidst shrubbery.
By David Smith CONTRIBUTOR
Sun City residents have a wide variety of birds to enjoy, many of them in their yards. There are numerous actions one can take to entice more feathered visitors. The single most important action is making sure to have a variety of native plants in your landscape. Native plants will attract beneficial insects, which are a critical food source for many adult and nearly all baby birds. Yards containing a variety of native plants, along with insects that frequent them, become self-sustaining ecosystems. Here are some additional tips: • Maintain a variety of native plants of varying sizes and growth patterns from low-growing ground cover to vines, flowers, shrubs and trees with varying schedules for fruiting and leafing. • Include both evergreens and deciduous plants. Trees and shrubs offer shelter, food and nesting habitat. The most important plants are trees with oaks, which support 534 species of butterflies and moths. “Bringing Nature Home” is an excellent book by Douglas Tallamy that tells how you can sustain wildlife with native plants. • Wading birds feed on frogs, salamanders, snakes and insects in their habitat of native plants along our lagoon borders. • Putting up bird feeders in our yards
probably benefits us more that it does the birds. Birds seldom rely totally on our feeders, especially in our temperate climate. Feeders bring bird close to our homes, giving us closeups we wouldn’t have without them. Keeping feeders clean and the food fresh is important for bird health. • Providing fresh clean water with a bird bath, fountain, or even a shallow dish, will attract birds to your yard. In most cases, finding water is harder than finding food. Songbirds don’t feel safe drinking water from our lagoons. They need something shallow enough to stand in for bathing. • Keep cats indoors. Next to habitat loss, domestic and feral cats are the biggest killers of birds. Indoor cats enjoy a longer, healthier life in Sun City – staying safely out of reach of alligators. Toxic chemicals, in pesticides and herbicides, can be harmful to wildlife as well as children and pets. Another human-induced cause of bird death is collisions with windows. Even those that fly away usually die soon after. Several methods of preventing window strikes can be found on Sun City resident Jim Cubie’s website birdfriendlyyards.net. In addition, this great site offers plans for native plant landscapes. The site can also be accessed from the SCHH Bird Club website. David W. Smith is a member of the Environmental Action Group of Sun City.

Trials of tire ineptitude leave customer tired By Chris Roosa CONTRIBUTOR
An amber light lit up on my dashboard, indicating that I had low pressure in my right rear tire. I took the car to the closest tire company to have it checked. They told me that I needed four new tires. Now, mind you, the car only had 20,000 miles on the current rubber. I found it hard to believe that a low pressure light on one tire indicated a need for four new tires! So, I then drove over to one of the big box stores. The girl behind the counter inquired as to the type of car I was driving. I told her it was a GMC K Terrain. She confidently informed me that there was no such car. We went back and forth for several minutes, arguing the point until I finally produced the registration, which verified I knew the car I bought. She
glared at me. Now here comes the hard part. The clerk asked me what was my problem. I said that I thought perhaps I had a nail in the right rear tire. She stood there with this dumbfounded, bewildered look on her face. She innocently asked, “Is that the tire in front of the steering wheel?” “No, it’s the right rear tire,” I replied. A look of total disbelief came across her face as she blurted out, “There ain’t no such thing as a right rear tire. What’s ya talking about?” I slowly replied, “If I was sitting in the passenger seat and looked back over my right shoulder, at that back tire, THAT would be the right rear tire.” That seemed to baffle her further. She told me they would call my name, over the PA system, when the car was ready. I decided to pick up a few groceries. Within 10 minutes, I

heard my name blasted throughout the store. I put the groceries aside and returned to her counter. She gave me a disgusted look and asked me what I wanted. I told her she called my name. Of course she denied it. The car had not even been brought into the garage as yet. I decided to stay right there and wait. Ninety minutes later, my SUV was finally brought into the bay. I was flipping through a magazine when I just happened to look up. The mechanic had taken off the driver’s side back tire. I ran out to tell him it was the wrong tire. He glared at me and stated that he DID just take off the right rear tire. I stared at him in disbelief and finally requested, “The other right rear!” He followed my instructions and then proceeded to tell me I need a
new tire because they can’t plug a nail hole. I asked how much that would cost. He looked on the vehicle tire chart under Chevrolet and told me they don’t make that vehicle. “True,” I said. But if you look under GMC, you’ll see it right there,” as I pointed it out to him on the chart. At that point, I was so upset that I told him to just put air in the current tire and put it back on the car. I left with the nail still in it. The next morning I took the car to my usual auto repair shop. When I pointed to the car they asked, “The GMC?” I was elated. Not only did they remove the nail and plug the hole, but they only charged $15. Plus, they understood “right rear tire” on the first try! Chris Roosa is a resident of Sun City Hilton Head.
