HELP BEAT DOWN POWER COSTS WITH • The actual price of power Palmetto Electric purchases is affected by high demand periods called “peaks.”

• Peaks are one of the factors that lead to future rate increases. • Peaks typically occur between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. in summer, as people come home, crank up the AC, cook dinner and turn on appliances.

• Making small voluntary adjustments to your power usage during these peak periods helps reduce the power costs that impact your electric bill.

• SIGN UP by June 30, 2021 at BeatThePeak.com and you will start receiving alerts that will identify a “peak” time plus be entered in a statewide drawing to win a $500 Visa gift card and it costs you nothing.

• Palmetto Electric members who sign up by June 30 will also be entered into an additional drawing to win a $100 Visa gift Card.

Contest rules at BeatThePeak.com/contest

If we all cut back on energy use a little during the peak periods, we can make a big difference together!

Sun City residents serve as vaccination clinic volunteers By Katherine Mace CONTRIBUTOR

“The gears are all well-greased!” Mark Davis, a Sun City resident and volunteer at the Hilton Head Regional Heath Care COVID-19 vaccination clinic at Buckwalter Recreation Center in Bluffton, is impressed. Things have been running very smoothly. Davis has been in the center’s converted gym about once a week to register folks for their vaccinations since this site opened in late March. “It’s enjoyable working with the people. Everyone is so nice, and the hospital staff and volunteers all seem to enjoy each other.” The gym at Buckwalter Rec Center, a facility of Beaufort County Parks and Recreation, is transformed. An easy rhythm of purpose and competence has replaced the usual chorus of kid’s voices and thumping basketballs. Hundreds of staff and volunteers, using dozens of computers, and untold hours, have rallied around a single purpose – to administer thousands of doses of COVID-19 vaccine. Hilton Head Regional Health Care, which operates Hilton Head and Coastal Carolina hospitals, has collaborated in this well-organized community effort. Volunteers at the heart of the effort include businessmen, members of various service organizations, retired doctors, and a whole lot of nurses from all around the communities being served. Sun City is well represented. Dale Finn is just one of the many Sun City volunteers. She’s been giving the shots. Finn, a registered nurse, also volunteers at Beaufort Memorial hospital’s drive-through vaccination center, and Volunteers in Medicine. She explained how she approaches people who are reluctant to get the vaccine. “I try to have them tell me why. Some people are open to hear about it,” Finn said. “So, I give them information about how safe it is, and how their parents made sure they were safe with their childhood vaccinations like tetanus, polio, measles and mumps. This is every bit as important!” Jeremy Clark, market CEO of Hilton

Volunteer Dale Finn chats with her next subject as she prepares the vaccination materials at the temporary clinic at Buckwalter Recreation Center.

Head Regional Healthcare, agrees. “Having the opportunity to assist tens of thousands of people receive the COVID-19 vaccine has been a privilege for our team. It is incredibly rewarding to know that these efforts, coupled with our community testing programs over the past year, helped play a role in keeping the community safe,” he said. “Our first COVID-19 vaccine doses were administered to healthcare workers on Dec. 16, 2020. As of May 10, we have administered more than 39,000 doses,” Clark said. “We will cease COVID-19 vaccinations at the Buckwalter Recreation Center on May 28. After this venue is closed, we plan to collaborate with local organizations just as we did prior to opening the centralized vaccination clinic.” As the weeks progress, the population being immunized at the clinic seems to be getting younger. Judy Cote, also a Sun City nurse-volunteer, related a story of immunizing a teenage couple, and then seeing them again three weeks later, when she got to give them each their second doses. “I had fun,” she said. “It was a thrill to be able to do that for teenagers.” Sun City’s Gail Bober reflected on her

Understanding the ripple effects of pesticides It’s as easy as 1) Go to Seabrook’s website:

www.theseabrook.com and watch the Virtual Tour video. Next, take a look at the villas available and see which floorplan catches your eye.

2) Look at the two living options: Purchase (own) or Entry Fee (lease) - which option is best for you? Either way, The Seabrook offers an affordable lifestyle. 3) Call Joe at 843-686-0919 or email jagee@theseabrook.com to schedule a tour of our community. Ask about our “Move In Before You Sell Your Home” program. The Seabrook offers the best value when compared to other senior communities. You need to visit and see for yourself!

By David W. Smith CONTRIBUTOR

I borrowed part of the title of this article from a recent presentation by Juliana Smith (no relation) on behalf of the Coastal Conservation League. As I listened to her outstanding presentation, I thought of the endless TV commercials where the side effects of the advertised drugs seem worse than the symptoms that might be relieved. The unintended effects of pesticides often appear to do more harm than the pests. “Pesticide” is defined by our Environmental Protection Agency as any substance or mixture of substances intended for preventing, destroying, repelling or mitigating any pest. “Pest” is defined as anything we don’t want around our homes – weeds, insects and rodents. “Cide” is borrowed from the Latin, meaning “killer.” The two primary unintended effects of pesticides are their toxicity to people and pets and their indiscriminate killing of the natural controls of the targeted pests. Over the counter pesticides have extensive warning labels for users. Stronger products are available only to trained, licensed applicators. All pesticide labels caution against touching, ingesting or breathing these products. While applicators are in the greatest danger, bystanders and others coming in casual contact with the residue may be contaminated as well. Pets and small children are the most vulnerable to the effects of pesticide residues on our lawns and on home surfaces. The three most common pesticides used in Sun City are herbicides, insecticides and

rodenticides. 2,4-D and glyphosate, the two most common active ingredients found in home and garden herbicides, are considered possible and probable carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Herbicides also gradually degrade the health of our soil by killing beneficial microbes and fungi. Healthy soil not only supports vigorous lawns, but also reduces atmospheric carbon. Insects are critical to our existence. Bees, butterflies, moths and others pollinate our plants. Without them, we would have no food. Insecticides are indiscriminate killers. Pyrethroids, the most common type of insecticide, paralyze all insects. Once paralyzed, the insects become easy prey for birds and fish, which can become paralyzed if they eat enough contaminated insects. Herbicide and insecticide residues get washed off plants and lawns into streetdrains and lagoons, then into rivers and groundwater. Most common rodenticides are anticoagulants, which cause mammals to bleed internally. Death is drawn out so that the targeted animal slows down and is more vulnerable to predators such as cats, raptors, herons and snakes. The poison can be shared with the predator, thus eliminating the natural rodent-control. For a real-world example of rodenticides in action, search for and watch “Save Kiawah Bobcats” on YouTube. Before using a pesticide, consider its longterm consequences. David W. Smith is a member of the Environmental Action Group of Sun City Hilton Head.

experiences at the Relaxation Station. This is the area where volunteers are watchful, as people wait for 15 minutes after their vaccination, as a precaution in case someone has a reaction. Bober also made second appointments and distributed lots of water. “I’m glad to do it,” she said. “It makes me feel like I’m doing something worthwhile. I’ll be here as long as they need me.” As for COVID-9? It is still around. As of May 10, South Carolina has had nearly 590,000 cases, over 22,900 hospitalizations and 9,596 deaths since the pandemic began. Beaufort and Jasper Counties combine for 19,128 cases and 251 deaths. The numbers are declining, but according to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC,) the frequency of infection continues to be at a “moderate level.” This vaccination center is winding down and is only giving second doses for the remainder of May, however many pharmacies and grocery stores are now giving the vaccines. Finn summed it up with a message for the community. “Everyone owes it to their

family, the community and the country to be vaccinated against COVID. The pandemic is killing people and leaving others who have been infected with lasting effects … neurologic, pulmonary, and overwhelming fatigue. This is one disease that is unlike any others. It affects us all. Please get the vaccine.” Katherine Mace is a writer who lives in Sun City.

Sun City parents proud of grownup daughter’s art exhibit By Lynne Cope Hummell EDITOR

An artist’s opening reception was held May 7 for Atlanta collage artist Laura W. Adams at Mystic Osprey Gallery in the Habersham Marketplace in Beaufort. Her meticulously executed collage works adorned the walls of the small gallery, and guests were invited to meet the artist while perusing the art. What those guests might not know is that a Sun City couple have a number of original works from the artist dating back to her earlier days, when she was just a child. Adams is the daughter of Bob and Pat Wilund. “Laura’s interest in art and nature has always been there,” said her mom, Pat. “We were living in Atlanta during Laura’s grade school days. During this time, she took some after school art classes. Some of the art from those classes still hangs on our walls today.”

Young Laura’s work from that class was put on exhibit when the teacher held a student art show at a shopping mall. “At the end of the art show, we got a phone call from an attorney who wanted to buy a piece of the art that she was showing,” Wilund said. “The painting was of two children looking into the window of a store. We put Laura on the phone to listen to the offer and decide if she would like to sell the painting. The attorney offered her $20. Her answer was yes, she would sell the painting, but she wanted $25.” The attorney agreed, and Laura had her first sale. Animals are a frequent subject in adult Laura’s works. Her artist statement for this exhibit is a good indication of her passion: “I strive to create artwork that is aesthetically beautiful and speaks to maintaining, even increasing, the beauty of the natural environment around us,” Adams wrote. “Protecting the birds,

animals and their habitats enhances our quality of life and makes us better stewards of the earth. I hope my art brings better awareness of the beauty of the natural world and inspires us to conserve it.” Not surprisingly, her mom said she has always loved animals of all kinds. “Gerbils, Sam the hamster, Hancock the parakeet and many dogs filled her life and developed her love of animals and nature,” Wilund said. “A summer class called ‘Bees, bugs and butterflies’ really caught her interest in saving the world of nature.” And that’s precisely what Adams hopes to accomplish with this exhibit.
