During pandemic, Jameson’s Charhouse turns to take-out
TOM MILLS
Joe Faustman, beloved bartender at Jameson’s Original Charhouse, is stationed outside the restaurant to assist customers with take-out orders in late April.
By Katherine Mace CONTRIBUTOR
“Stay safe!” Joe Faustman hails customers and passers-by alike as he stands in front of Sun City’s Jameson’s Original Charhouse restaurant. Faustman, who is waiting to distribute take-out orders, is a familiar, beloved bartender and wait staffer at Jameson’s, the only restaurant that is now open in Sun City. In late March, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster ordered restrictions on food service across the state. Restaurants were allowed to serve only by take-out or pick-up. “We take the health and safety of our customers very seriously. We understand that residents are nervous about COVID 19,” said John Kelm II, the restaurant’s general managing partner, who has been at Jameson’s since it opened almost six years ago. “We are taking additional daily cleaning measures, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines and recommendations.”
Eleven of the restaurant’s usual 49 staff remained at work in the restaurant after the shut-down. “The others were laid off and are getting unemployment,” Kelm said. “We’re all doing good. We communicate frequently with each other. We’re a family here and we’ll get through this. We are paying close attention daily to what’s going on. We watch closely and are waiting for instructions from DHEC (South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control). We look forward to when we can reopen our doors.” Kelm described that the restaurant’s business is now down 40% from preCOVID times. “Our restaurant has always had carry-out, and now that’s all we’re doing. We will do anything we can to accommodate folks. We’ve chosen the menu from the regular favorites.” To place orders for pick-up, call 843705-8200. The only form of payment is credit cards – because they do not require a signature. As Faustman handed out shopping bags, each with a dinner ready to eat, one in a group of women joked, “Parmesan Crusted Sea Bass and chocolate cake. The only thing that would make the meal perfect is one of Joe’s martinis!” “Joe has been at Jameson’s since it opened,” Kelm noted with a smile. “He’s the mayor of Sun City!” There is no doubt that Jameson’s has fans. As the golf carts and cars slowly roll up to collect their dinners, the occupants could not overstate their enthusiasm for this take-out service. “I’ve always loved their food,” said John Barnes. “I didn’t know they were doing this. Now that I know, I’ll be here more!” Siggy Letheby added, “I think it’s great. It makes it easy for us. We support these guys!” “They make the best burger ever,” said Peggy Battista. “And the chicken marsala is nothing to sneeze at. The service is excellent. We can’t wait for the dining room to reopen.” Katherine Mace is a writer who lives in Sun City.

Neighborhoods display signs to honor essential workers By Katherine Mace CONTRIBUTOR
“We are all in this together. We felt that all the people – everyone – is working together. Even the people staying in place are working.” Cynthia Zambri described how she and John Serrano fashioned the sign thanking essential workers that they put at the entrance to their Strawberry Hill neighborhood in April. “Our community collected money too, and we made care packages that we took to the fire department, police, the rehab facility, and the Tidewatch Emergency Department,” Zambri said. “We even made one for our mail lady, Rosie. And, we’re going to continue to do things. We want to say ‘thank you’!” The many signs at the entrances to Sun City neighborhoods honored all the frontline people who have continued to work during the COVID-19 pandemic, as Sun City residents stayed home and observed the social distancing recommendations.
workers, truckers, veterinarians, farmers, and the people from the Greenery. Carol Woods has been decorating the Heritage Oak Place neighborhood signs for 14 years. “When our neighborhood rep asked me, it was easy to say yes! I love to do it,” she said. “It’s important to remember that people are putting their lives on the line for us. My husband was at his doctor’s appointment, and the physician told him how grateful he was to see the signs. We made a great big thank-you on our sign, so it could easily be seen as TOM MILLS Cynthia Zambri and John Serrano created this vignette around people drive by.” the entrance to Strawberry Hill to salute essential workers of Lin Hilts hand-painted the the COVID-19 pandemic. sign she made for the enOne sign offered thanks to health care trance to Wildlife Bay, and the workers, and also to the grocery store responses have been very positive. “I’ve

gotten lots of emails, texts and phone calls telling me how much they appreciate it,” she said. “It started when Wayne Porter, our neighborhood rep, put out an email asking for help to make a sign of thanks for all the health care, emergency and essential workers,” Hilts said. “The whole community wants to be involved. They want to come together to respond to the coronavirus. Some people are running errands for others, some are making food, and this was my chance to do something to put a smile on faces. We’re safe and we’re grateful!” The bright and colorful signs throughout the community echo these sentiments. “When I’m out and about, the signs remind me to thank first responders, and all the workers,” Hilts said. “They keep us safe, healthy, and fed.” Katherine Mace is a writer who lives in Sun City. Bill Teeter and Carol O’Neil delivered 20 Kindles to Whale Branch Elementary School Principal Missy Vogt.
The Coronavirus has bought unemployment and other hardships to many residents of Beaufort and Jasper counties. Food pantries and other nonprofits are struggling to serve their clients. After learning of a local “Kindles for Kids” program to support local elementary school students, the Sun City/Okatie Lions Club board approved the purchase and donation of 20 Kindle Fire devices each to Whale Branch Elementary School in Beaufort County and to Ridgeland Elementary School in Jasper County. The devices will be distributed to students who might not have sufficient access to electronics and enable them to keep up with their studies at home. In addition, knowing that many local food pantries are struggling to keep up with increased needs, cash gifts were approved to two pantries, First Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Bluffton and St. Stephens AME Church in Hardeeville. At the same time, the board approved a cash donation to Family Promise of Beaufort County, a nonprofit that serves homeless families. Lions Club members have supported
the food pantries for the past three years through the Lions Share program. Members bring food donations to the monthly meetings and the collections are distributed to the pantries on alternating months. The April and May meetings had to be canceled due to COVID-19 measures, so the membership has been asked to drop off food donations to various houses throughout Sun City through the summer months. The Sun City/Okatie Lions Club provides many other services to the community. They conduct vision and hearing screenings in Beaufort County and Jasper County schools, performing nearly 9,000 vision screenings and 9,000 hearing tests each year. The Club also funds nursing scholarships for two students at the Technical College of the Lowcountry annually. They deliver and distribute Back Pack Buddies food packs at M.C. Riley Elementary School, helping to stamp out hunger on weekends for school age children. Anyone interested in learning more about the club may contact president Bill Teeter at billteeter@yahoo.com.

Sun City says ‘Thank You’ to essential workers
SIGN PHOTOS BY TOM MILLS
SUBMITTED BY JEAN BYE
Sun City resident Mickey Boisvert conceived the idea to create a special salute to those who continued to work through the COVID-19 pandemic. She assigned a word or symbol to each of the members of the Sun City Double Shots tennis team. Each person then decided how their word would be displayed, took a picture, and forwarded the photo to Mickey, who then put the montage together. This remote project was a fun idea that connected the team during this time of maintaining social distance.

Selling a Home in 2020
In the coming months, there will be plenty of national discussion about the viability of selling a home. However, real estate markets behave differently in various geographic locations — sometimes even from neighborhood to neighborhood. That means the only real way to know is to put your house on the market and see what happens.
If buyers go on a buyers strike over these next several months, then you just know that you haven’t sold your house. But you have no idea if anyone is going to be interested in buying if you don’t put it on the market
Contact Town Square Realty today to discuss selling your home... 843-705-9040
