Cycling band of brothers enjoy their 80s on two wheels By Katherine Mace CONTRIBUTOR
“I’m so happy when I’m on my bike. This is my main thing.” Al Paul is 81 years old, and one of scores of Sun City residents who ride bicycles. There are many things special about Paul and his four buddies who bike ride together twice a week. One of the coolest is that they are all more than 80 years old. These are not the only octogenarians who ride in Sun City, but these guys have been together for quite some time and share a respect and band that makes for a great story. Paul rides with Al Litster and Don Martin, both 82, Tom Mills, 83, and Bob Ryan, the eldest of the group at 84. Their 35-plus-mile ride usually takes them to The Sugaree, a Bluffton bakery where most order the same thing… coffee and a caramel, sea salt scone. The unique group of octo-brothers come from a wide variety of backgrounds, but the deep love of cycling started early for most

of them. When he was five, Ryan spotted a bike in the basement of his cousins’ Bensonhurst, New York, building. He asked if he could try it, got on, and didn’t get off for six
hours. “I rode around the block again and again. I was hooked,” he said. Litster’s hand-me-down bike had been ridden in a velodrome (racing oval). “It
had rod brakes that didn’t work very well,” he said. “Going downhill, I had to drag my feet.” “Stand-By-Me” experiences were part of Mills’ youth. “I remember Saturday outings. There were three of us with two bikes,” he said. “Jimmy was the most athletic, but he didn’t have a bike. He’d ride me on the handlebars of my bike, and we’d go down to Des Moines’ Raccoon River. We’d be gone all day.” Martin got a new bike for his 8th birthday. “It was a fancy Schwinn with a horn, and lights that worked when I pedaled,” he said. “I put cards in the spokes. It was heavy and hard to pedal, but I delivered my paper route on that bike.” Paul doesn’t remember bike riding as a kid. “I was an avid runner and competed in biking and running events,” he said. “I owned a carpet installation and cleaning company. I swapped carpet for a good steel bike. I had it for at least 30 years.”

Don Martin enjoys the standard treat at The Sugaree, a caramel sea salt scone.
Although they’re no longer active, Sun City’s Al Paul Caravan rode together sporting matching jerseys for years. All five of these cyclists have wonderful biking experiences outside their Sun City journeys. Ryan, Litster, and several others from Sun City, went to Holland on a Bike and Barge trip, which they describe as the best trip of their lives. On bikes, they explored the villages and countryside of Holland, ate pastries and returned to the barge to sleep each night. Mills rode in RAGBRAI (Register Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa,) and BRAG (Bike Ride Across Georgia). “One year we finished in Savannah and rode into the lobby of the Hyatt on our bikes,” he recalled. Paul recently switched to riding a CAT Trike exclusively, and Ryan just purchased one. “My philosophy has changed,” Paul said. “I look around more.” Ryan, the elder statesman of the group, described an important aspect of riding. “My exercise helped me survive heart transplant surgery in 2010 and melanoma lung cancer that spread to my lymph nodes and then to my left lung in 2011,” he said. “I never stopped my biking program through infusion and radiation treatments. My oncologist tells me it is a miracle that I’ve been cancer free for over five years. The type of biking we do on a regular basis can help folks get through or even prevent some major health issues.”
Martin celebrates each birthday by riding. “On my 70th birthday, I rode 70 miles. I did that until I was 81, then I switched to kilometers!,” he said. “Sometimes the youngsters – in their late 60s and 70s – ride with us. We’re very careful when we ride. We point out cars for each other, and if there is a flat tire, everyone stops.” “You cannot let your mind wander. You have to be alert,” Litster added. “We all wear helmets, and no one wears earphones. We’re strict with each other, and we’re real friends. We do not socialize, but we would do anything for each other. If anyone called, I’d be there.” The men are members of the Sun City bike club, which provides group rides for all levels. Martin explained that Group A rides 16-18 mph, B rides 14-16 mph, and the more leisurely groups ride more slowly. The octogenarians describe themselves as a B+ group. They meet at 9 a.m. at Hidden Cypress on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Newcomers are welcome. For information about the Sun City bike club, contact Dave Hurt at davidhurtjr@ gmail.com. Mills summed up the group’s love of the sport: “Cycling is a state of mind. It’s exhilarating to zoom along with the group working together!” Katherine Mace is a writer who lives in Sun City.

CONSIDERING A KNEE OR JOINT REPLACEMENT?
WHAT IS RESTORATIVE MEDICINE? Restorative medicine involves using Human Cellular Tissue Products (HCTPs) to help the body heal itself. Through restorative medicine, damaged tissue in joints are supplemented with healthy structural tissue to provide an opportunity to restore from within. KNEES, SHOULDERS, AND HIPS Dr. Heather Hinshelwood MD has helped thousands of patients with knees, shoulders, hips and more. The procedure takes only 30 minutes and allows the patient to leave with a simple band-aid over the site.
THE LEADERS IN RESTORATIVE MEDICINE
HILTON HEAD ISLAND FOR OVER 30 YEARS
RESULTS ORIENTED Many patients experience a significant reduction in knee pain within 48 hours due to the reduced inflammation. With restorative medicine therapy, most patients feel maximum results within 10 to 12 weeks and up to 95% within 6 months.
Over one million joint replacements are performed in the U.S. each year and according to the Cleveland Clinic, over 85% of knee replacements need to be redone within 15 years. Since 2018 the Fraum Center for Restorative Health has been offering a non-surgical alternative to joint replacement that is Beyond Stem Cells™. This cutting edge technology helps patients get back to living the life they love.

At Sun City’s recent Earth Day Celebration, the Environmental Action Group (EAG) encouraged visitors to post comments on environmental issues that they felt need to be addressed in our community. The most frequently mentioned issue was reducing the noise and air pollution caused by landscaping equipment, particularly leaf-blowers. Like most of the issues posted, a solution will require action by community management. The first step could be advising community contracted landscapers that the next contract, currently three-plus years away, will mandate the use of battery-powered blowers and trimmers. Numerous communities across the nation have taken this step. Why not us? The restriction against front-facing solar panels was the next most-often stated issue of concern. This restriction prohibits many of our neighbors from having the panels oriented in the most efficient and cost-effective direction. Having recycling bins available in common areas was proposed by several contributors. While the whole recycling arena has its issues, beverage containers are among the items most effectively converted into usable products and the most commonly discarded at our amenities. Waste Management would collect them at no additional cost to our community. Lagoon borders were mentioned as a concern. The EAG believes many residents currently misunderstand how our lagoons function, and the group is currently working on an educational piece to share with residents, we hope by year end. The need for more walking trails on existing Sun City property, including under power lines, was expressed. There were a variety of concerns about plantings in common areas, including wanting more native plants to be used, as well as the need for more

trees. The use of native perennials in our decorative plantings could save the community money while benefitting the environment. Seasonal replacement of exotic plants is costly and offers little benefit to wildlife. A request was made for information on energy-saving resources. The EAG May meeting’s speakers from Palmetto Electric supplied many suggestions on how we can save energy and money. Installing LED bulbs is the single most energy efficient action we can take. The speakers also predicted that future utility billing will include a monthly maximum demand component, with each bill based on the customer’s highest 30-minute usage during Palmetto’s peak period. The EAG is concerned about all of these issues and has action teams focused on most of them. If you are concerned about these or related issues, please consider joining our group. All my feathered friends have not settled down By Chris Roosa CONTRIBUTOR
From the time I was a child, I have loved birds. I loved to hear their chirping. I was also fascinated by their beautiful colors. I enjoyed stroking the softness of their feathers. When I was a youngster, my folks bought me a green parakeet. It was summer, and I would place his cage on the front porch. I thought he’d enjoy the beautiful weather along with the sounds of the robins and sparrows that fluttered nearby. I was playing outside one afternoon, and went to check on my new feathered friend. The cage was empty! I could see where the bird had chewed through the cardboard that held the feeder on to the cage. He was gone, and there stood one sad little girl, sobbing. Thirty years later I walked into a pet store and was amazed at all the large birds. I became particularly impressed
with a lovely huge Cockatoo. When I got home, I gave my husband a convincing pep talk about this beautiful, friendly, sweet bird that was so well behaved. We returned to the pet store so that I could introduce my husband to (perhaps) a new family member. I placed the

Cockatoo on his finger. Within a moment the bird bit his finger, drawing blood, and made a “deposit” on his brand-new leather cowboy boots. Needless to say, we didn’t purchase that bird. Some weeks later I did bring home a double yellow headed Amazon. I was assured this one didn’t bite and did, in fact, talk. The first morning, I woke up to the bird flying around my house. Eventually he crashed into the bar area, so he could see his reflection in the mirrors. He was easy enough to catch and I returned him to his cage. But in no time, I realized this was the daily routine. The bird was an escape artist. I finally had to padlock the cage. One afternoon I was cooking dinner and Myka, the Amazon, finally spoke to me for the first time. What I heard was, “Hola, muchacha! Como esta usted?” This bird rambled on in Spanish for the next five minutes! Oh Lord, I thought. Had my newly purchased bird just flown across the border? I returned the bird to the pet store, informing the owner that I wanted an English-speaking bird. A couple of days later she called to tell me she had an Amazon that spoke English and wanted me to come immediately to her shop. As I entered the store, there were at least 30 birds flying around. The owner looked at me and asked, “Why didn’t you tell me that bird knows how to unlock cages?” Apparently, the fluttering of dozens
of birds was what she walked into that morning. During the night my bird had flown from cage to cage, freeing every other feathered creature in that building. I spent my morning helping her catch birds and re-cage them. My new English-speaking Amazon was quite the perfect bird. However, years later I learned that their hormones kick when they turn 10. This sweet, loving, angelic fluff turned into a vulture. I didn’t have one gold necklace that wasn’t damaged with a permanent crease from his beak. My nose constantly had scabs from that bird grabbing onto it and puncturing same. Every finger, at some point, bled from daily bites. He’d attack the cage every time I got near him. I became terrified of my own bird. If I entered the kitchen he’d scream “Mom, Mom, Mom” for half an hour until I took him his own bowl of fruit and veggies. It angered my husband so much that he’d clang on the cage with a wooden spoon it try to shut him up. Finally, a breeder told me that the bird’s aggressive personality was a result of the hormone change and wanting to be bred. After 20 years of putting up with that nasty bird, I sold him to that breeder. Then I took up raising ducks and geese. They were a lot friendlier. Chris Roosa is a resident of Sun City Hilton Head.
